Atrazine, one of the world’s most widely used pesticides, wreaks havoc with the sex lives of adult male frogs, emasculating three-quarters of them and turning one in 10 into females, according to a new study by University of California, Berkeley, biologists.
The 75 percent that are chemically castrated are essentially “dead” because of their inability to reproduce in the wild, reports UC Berkeley’s Tyrone B. Hayes, professor of integrative biology.
“These male frogs are missing testosterone and all the things that testosterone controls, including sperm. So their fertility is as low as 10 percent in some cases, and that is only if we isolate those animals and pair them with females,” he said. “In an environment where they are competing with unexposed animals, they have zero chance of reproducing.”
The 10 percent or more that turn from males into females – something not known to occur under natural conditions in amphibians – can successfully mate with male frogs but, because these females are genetically male, all their offspring are male.
“When we grow these guys up, depending on the family, we will get anywhere from 10 to 50 percent females,” Hayes said. “In a population, the genetically male females can decrease or wipe out a population just because they skew sex ratios so badly.”

At Least 15 Americans Wounded in Major Strikes on Saudi Base
The most significant overnight development saw major Iranian cross-Gulf attacks emerge. This is a serious escalation despite the White House having approached Tehran with a 15-point peace plan, delivered via Pakistan. The Iranians have clearly rejected it for now, and have instead launched a serious assault on Prince Sultan air base in Saudi Arabia Friday.
The Wall Street Journal details that "Twelve American troops–up from 10 previously reported–were wounded in an Iranian attack on the Prince Sultan air base in Saudi Arabia Friday, according to multiple U.S. and Arab officials."
The AP in follow up issued higher figures: "Iran fired six ballistic missiles and 29 drones at Saudi Arabia's Prince Sultan air base in a Friday attack that wounded at least 15 troops, including five seriously, according to the sources who were not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity. U.S. officials initially reported that at least 10 U.S. troops were injured, including two seriously wounded."

Drone attacks hit Kuwait International Airport, radar system severely damaged

Spokesperson for Kuwait’s Public Authority for Civil Aviation, Abdullah Al-Rajhi, announced that Kuwait International Airport was targeted by several drone attacks, resulting in no casualties and only limited physical damage.
In a statement to Kuwait News Agency today (Saturday), he noted that the incident caused significant damage to the airport’s radar system.
Al-Rajhi added that emergency teams and relevant authorities responded immediately, taking necessary measures to assess the situation, ensure the safety of operations, and restore full operational readiness as quickly as possible.
He affirmed the Authority’s full commitment, in coordination with concerned authorities, to take all necessary steps to safeguard the security and safety of civil aviation in the State of Kuwait.

Bank of America has reached a $72.5 million settlement in a lawsuit that alleges the financial giant helped facilitate the sex trafficking operation of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to court documents.
“Lawyers for the bank and the women had told Manhattan-based U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff this month they had reached a ‘settlement in principle’, but terms of the deal were not disclosed at the time.
‘While we stand by our prior statements made in the filings in this case, including that Bank of America did not facilitate sex trafficking crimes, this resolution allows us to put this matter behind us and provides further closure for the plaintiffs’, a spokesperson for Bank of America said in a statement.”

Two drones strike Salalah Port; expat worker injured

Salalah– Port of Salalah was targeted by two drones on Saturday resulting in moderate injuries to an expatriate worker while causing minor damage to a crane within the facility.
Authorities confirmed that emergency teams responded promptly and the injured worker received medical attention. Operations at the port were not significantly affected.
The Sultanate of Oman strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a heinous act, and reaffirmed its commitment to taking all necessary measures to safeguard the nation’s security and ensure the safety of residents and vital infrastructure.
