Western silence allows Israel to get away with killing journalists

The non-reaction to an RT reporter’s narrow escape from a missile strike underscores the selective outrage of Western media

On March 19, RT war correspondent Steve Sweeney and his cameraman Ali Rida Sbeity were injured by an Israeli strike meters from where they stood in southern Lebanon.

Sweeney was on camera reporting on recent Israeli attacks on southern Lebanese towns and infrastructure when he heard the sound of an incoming projectile. Ducking and running, he managed to escape the brunt of the impact.

According to the journalists, an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at their filming position near Al-Qasmiya Bridge, where Sweeney was reporting on, “the targeting of bridges and the forced displacement of one million people, an ethnic cleansing operation on a larger scale than the Nakba,” as he later stated, referencing the violent displacement of Palestinians which accompanied the creation of the Jewish State in the late 1940s.

The men were treated for shrapnel injuries. Sweeney said, adding “I’m amazed that we survived. We were incredibly lucky to come away with the injuries we did.”

Just a day prior, Sweeney had posted on X about the Israeli targeted airstrike on Lebanese journalist and Al-Manar TV presenter Mohammad Sherri and his wife. Both were killed. Sweeney reposted the news with the words, “Targeting journalists is a war crime.”

The next day, he himself was targeted.

This deliberate targeting of journalists wearing press vests is another Israeli war crime, in a long list of Israeli war crimes which include killing at least 261 Palestinian journalists in Gaza in the past two years alone, as well as previously killing Lebanese journalists and bombing Iranian media repeatedly.

Targeted assassinations of journalists by the Israeli army are not new. Back in 2008, Fadel Shana, a Reuters cameraman in Gaza, was killed by a flechette shell fired by an Israeli tank as he worked.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Israel was responsible for two-thirds of all press killings globally in both 2025 and 2024. CPJ notes that the Israeli army has committed more targeted killings of journalists than any other government’s military since the CPJ began documentation in 1992.

Russian condemnation, British silence

RT Editor in Chief Margarita Simonyan posted on X about the targeted attack, clearly stating the journalists had been targeted by an Israeli strike and stating, “War journalists are not legitimate targets.”

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova highlighted that in no way could the strike be considered accidental, particularly given, “the rocket did not hit an ‘important strategic military target’, but the location of the report.”

While Western media is always quick to highlight claims of legacy media journalists in danger, no matter how staged it appears to be, when it comes to journalists actually under attack the outrage is selective.

Although the attack on Sweeney and Sbeity was filmed on camera in broad daylight, with Israel virtually the only possible culprit, British media in particular have been disinterested. The BBC’s report ran with the headline, “Missile lands next to presenter during live report from Lebanon.” Barely noticeable in small print many lines later, the BBC mentions the “ongoing Israeli air strikes and ground operations in southern Lebanon.”

The BBC listing an experienced war correspondent as a “presenter” was also not accidental. The overall flippant tone of their report was to insinuate a minor incident had occurred, the missile’s origin unknown.

Russia Offered to Stop Sharing Intel With Iran If U.S. Stops Sharing Intel With Ukraine.

Russia recently put a proposal to the United States, offering to cease intelligence sharing with Iran—in particular, details like precise locations of U.S. military assets in the Middle East—if Washington ceases sharing intelligence with Ukraine regarding Russian military activities. The suggestion was conveyed by Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev to U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner during a meeting in Miami, Florida, last week.

The Trump administration rejected the offer, according to sources, but the proposal has caused alarm among European diplomats, who worry that Russia is seeking to exploit divisions between the U.S. and its European partners over Iran.

Notably, President Donald J. Trump recently voiced frustration with NATO allies’ hesitation to deploy warships to help secure the Strait of Hormuz amid the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, branding them “COWARDS” in a Truth Social post and warning, “we will REMEMBER!”

The Kremlin has indicated that U.S.-facilitated peace negotiations on Ukraine are presently “on hold.” While the United States continues to provide intelligence support to Ukraine, other categories of assistance have been reduced. The Trump administration’s recent moves to relax sanctions on Russian energy exports, as the Iran war disrupts global supply, have drawn complaints from some European officials.

Expelled Oberlin Chabad rabbi says he made a mistake by discussing molesting little children on social media

The Ohio college removed Shlomo Elkan after a police report detailed descriptions of messages about sexually touching children — which he says were ‘purely fictional’

A police report obtained by the Forward sheds light on the removal of a Chabad rabbi from the campus of Oberlin College last week, after the school administration became aware of a police report that alleged he engaged in sexually explicit conversations online concerning minors.

Rabbi Scott “Shlomo” Elkan, former co-director of Oberlin Chabad, allegedly received sexually explicit texts, photos and videos through the messaging app Kik concerning three young people, ages 7, 12 and 13, according to the report.

In December 2025 messages to an adult on the platform, Elkan allegedly responded to photos of someone giving a child a bath. The person he chatted with alluded to touching the child’s genitals and said he had been aroused when the child was sitting on his lap, the report stated.

According to the Oberlin Police Department report, Elkan shared photos of girls as part of the chat. The department closed the case after a 20-day investigation, with no charges filed.

In a phone interview with the Forward, Elkan said he regretted his participation in the chat, but that his messages were not based on real events.

“To be clear, what had happened was an online chat with an anonymous adult on purely fictional, you know, fantastical things that’s not rooted in any kind of reality whatsoever,” Elkan said. “And I entered that, and I should not have, and I take responsibility for that.”

Elkan added that he has been engaged in “professional care and spiritual counseling to deal with all of the stresses and all of the factors that led me to engaging in an unhealthy behavior.”

According to the report, in an interview with police, Elkan confirmed the Kik account belonged to him and said the chats were “escapism” from the stress of his everyday life. He denied ever viewing or possessing child sexual abuse images.

Elkan told the Forward that “oftentimes people think of rabbis as godlike and infallible,” and he “made a mistake in one of the weakest few moments of my life.”

“There was no crime. Nothing illegal. Poor judgment, yes,” Elkan said. “And there’s not a victim. The victims here are the Jewish community and my family.”

Iran Attacked American-British Bomber Base 4,000 Kilometers Away In Indian Ocean With Missiles

Iran launched two intermediate-range ballistic missiles at Diego Garcia but did not hit the British-American military base in the Indian Ocean island, the Wall Street Journal reported on March 21, citing multiple United States officials.

One of the missiles failed midflight, while a U.S. warship launched an SM-3 interceptor at the other, although it could not be determined if the interception succeeded, the newspaper said, without specifying when the missile attack exactly took place.

The Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia, leased to the U.S. by the United Kingdom, serves as a base for long-range bombers and other strategic assets.

The missile attack came after the UK gave the U.S. permission to strike Iranian missile sites targeting the strait of Hormuz from British bases including Diego Garcia on March 20. Previously, UK bases were only being used to strike Iranian sites targeting British allies and interests in Gulf states.

U.S. President Donald Trump said that the UK “should have acted a lot faster” in giving his country the permission. He earlier slammed NATO allies, calling them “cowards” for refusing to offer warships to reopen the strait.

Responding, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that the Islamic Republic would “exercise its right to self-defense”.

It is possible that Iran used a modified version of its heaviest missile, the Khorramshahr-4, to target Diego Garcia. With a stated range of 2,000 kilometers, the missile is classified as a medium-range ballistic missile. However, by decreasing the weight of the warhead from 1,500 kg, the Islamic Republic may have been able to double the range of the missile.

(Bloomberg) –Residents exiting Massachusetts took a net of $4.2 billion in adjusted gross income with them in 2023, one of the largest totals in the country, after a tax on millionaires took effect.

Call it the Hochul Effect

The amountwas an 8% year-over-year increase, according to Internal Revenue Service data, even as the total number of taxpayers leaving the state slowed.

This was the first year that residentswere subject to a 4% surtaxon incomes over $1 million after voters approved the levy in 2022 to fund schools and transportation.

Several Democrat-led states have since approved or are considering similar taxes on top earners, partlyas a way to make up for federal funding cuts enacted under President Donald Trumpand also to pay for more ambitious agendas.

Supporters of the Massachusetts measurehail the more than $6 billion in revenue it’s brought to state coffers. Critics warn that it’s driving away entrepreneurs, even if Massachusettslacks the high-profile departures seen in California, which is weighing a wealth tax, or Washington, which enacted a millionaire tax earlier this month.

The new IRS data offers evidence for both supporters and opponents of the surtax.

Despite the tax’s implementation, the number of residents moving out of Massachusetts who reported income of $200,000 or more — the top bracket tracked in the IRS data — fell year-over-year. Net outflows from Massachusetts long predate the millionaires tax, especially to Florida and New Hampshire, its northern neighbor, which has no tax on wages or capital gains==. Total lost income was also higher in 2021 than 2023.

The state’s millionaires-tax collections have increased every year since 2023 and so far in fiscal 2026 have jumped 19% year-over-year to $1.3 billion.

That haul “shows most conclusively that the people with very high incomes continue contributing revenue at rising ratesbased on their residence in Massachusetts,” progressive organization Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center said in a statement.

The level ofincome leaving the state remained significantly higher than it was pre-pandemic, even as a Covid-induced explosion in moving activity abated. Thenet number of tax returns from outgoing residents dropped by 36% from 2022 to 2023.

The wealthy now make up alarger share of defectionsfrom Massachusetts. The top earners wereresponsible for 70% of the $4.2 billion in net outflows in 2023, a jump from the previous year andmore than doublethe level from 2019.

“We are trying to make money on a smaller tax base. It’s going to be harder,” said Jim Stergios, executive director of Pioneer Institute, a Boston-based think tank that opposes the tax.

Three business-backed organizations including Pioneer are backingballot questionsthis year, which they argue will recapture economic competitivenesslost because of the millionaires tax.One would lower the state income tax to 4% from 5%,while anotherwould cap how much state revenue can increase in a given year.(Voting is the way the leaders of the state to punish the higher earners still in the state, they’ll say the people voted it in, not us!)

In the age of drones and portable antiship missiles, retaking the Strait of Hormuz would be anything but simple, but not impossible, military experts say. Round-the-clock intelligence and surveillance flights that are now available because of U.S. air superiority, combined with rapid targeting of Iranian weapons systems, could make all the difference, said retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. David Deptula, dean of the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies.

“It’s not something that is going to happen overnight, but over time the Strait of Hormuz will be open back to the levels of shipping that we saw before this conflict broke out. It is a reasonable estimate that it will be a matter of weeks,” he said.“The Iranians are not going to end up with control over the strait, we are.”

Indeed, the geopolitical implications of allowing Iran to end up in charge of the strategic waterway would be unacceptable, said Sanam Vakil, director of the Chatham House think tank’s Middle East and North Africa program. “If the U.S. cuts and runs, leaving Iran’s Islamic Republic to do what it does best—hold everyone hostage—then the war will be a categorical failure for the United States and President Trump,” she said.

Even if Trump were to leave Iran in control of the Strait of Hormuz under pressure from markets or voters seeking a quick end to the war, the arrangement likely won’t be sustainable for a long time, leading to an imminent new round of warfare, diplomats and analysts say.

“This would not be a very tolerable or acceptable situation for the Gulf states, and I wouldn’t have thought that it would be tolerable or acceptable for a lot of the Gulf’s energy clients—not even for China, and certainly not for India and Japan,” said Robin Mills, chief executive of the Dubai-based Qamar Energy consulting firm. “Even for the U.S., the humiliation would at some point prompt Trump, or someone else, to come back and try to change that.”

While the Iranian leadership currently possesses significant leverage for a deal with the U.S. if it chose to negotiate,it also holds a record of sticking to unrealistically rigid policies since the early days of the Islamic Republic, said Alex Vatanka, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute and author of a book on U.S.-Iranian relations. Back during the Iran-Iraq war, Iran liberated every inch of its territory by 1982—but only agreed to a cease-fire with Saddam Hussein’s regime in 1988, after massive destruction and hundreds of thousands of casualties on both sides, he noted.

“The Iranian side has a history of not taking opportunities, on the diplomatic front and on the military front,” he said. “This regime cares a lot about the optics, about the slogans, about not looking weak. But it’s not just the Iranians who can escalate. The United States can also escalate.”

With all its horrors,the Iran-Iraq war also created the foundational myth of the Islamic Republic, cementing its power for the ensuing decades. The regime’s most dangerous enemy now is the Iranian people: The Islamic Republic killed thousands of protesters as it suppressed demonstrations in January.

Investigative journalist Ross Coulthart points out an interesting wrinkle to the Feb. 27 disappearance of William Neil McCasland, a retired Air Force officer believed to have knowledge of government programs on UFOs and potential nonhuman intelligence.

The 68-year-old McCasland reportedly went missing after leaving his Albuquerque, N.M., home on foot to go hiking.

But Coulthart notes McCasland was not actually seen leaving of his own volition. Rather, a repairman is the last person to have seen him at the residence.

“One hour, he was there with a repairman who saw him in the home, and when his wife came back a little over an hour later, he had disappeared,” Coulthart told “Katie Pavlich Tonight” on Friday.

The local sheriff department’s investigation appears to be at a standstill, and surveillance cameras from neighbors’ properties have yielded nothing, he said.

Left at McCasland’s home was his tracking watch and mobile phone, while a firearm and holster had been taken.

Meantime, a former colleague of McCasland’s, aerospace engineer Monica Reza, disappeared while hiking in the Los Angeles forest with a companion nine months ago.

Police say Reza was about 30 feet behind the person she was hiking with, smiling and waving. When the person turned around, she had vanished.
