By gathering though communication like you are seeking it out from people though your communication so to speak is all.
This is where this looks extremely bad in these ways and is widening the scope of leaks to look for even if you are a media person and you get info that is classified and you knowingly do this with out reporting it to the correct people then you can and usually will be charged with something but in most cases espionage they have domestic which is usually for political gain or motivate some times money so to speak just as much as foreign is all in ways.
So then you just showing them the means of communication you likely used in the past so to speak so then they search though this and relate this to your message so to speak
