Astrophotographer captures the Elephant Trunk Nebula in breathtaking detail

Astrophotographer Terry Hancock has captured a dramatic view of the star-forming region IC 1396 — also known as the Elephant's Trunk Nebula — shining in deep space some 2,400 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cepheus.

IC 1396 is an emission nebula — a vast cloud of gas and dust that emits its own light after being ionized by ultraviolet radiation blasted out from the young stars embedded within.

The dense, dark filaments silhouetted against the glowing gas are rich with material that will give rise to future generations of stars.

The Elephant's Trunk Nebula gained its evocative nickname thanks to the 20 light-year-long column of twisting interstellar dust and gas visible near the centre of the deep-space vista.

"The image highlights various celestial elements, including a notable emission nebula, by contrast against the bluish cavity that fills the center of IC 1396," Hancock told Space.com in an email.

The entire complex spans a little over 5° of sky, or roughly 10 full moons side by side, though only the faintest hazy glow would be detectable to the naked eye under perfect dark sky conditions.

Hancock captured the ancient nebula light over the course of almost 114 hours using a 180 mm Newtonian reflector fitted with a bespoke astronomy camera from Whitewater, Colorado, on Sept. 22, 2021.

Special astronomy filters were used to isolate specific wavelengths of light, which were then carefully compiled and edited using the astrophotography software Pixinsight and Adobe Photoshop to reveal the structure and color in extraordinary detail.

Europe wants to make space food out of thin air and astronaut pee

While space agencies have their eyes set on astronaut missions to the moon, Mars and beyond, there are quite a few hurdles in the way — and one of the biggest is food.

As it stands, food is produced on Earth, then transported to the International Space Station (ISS). While that's feasible for missions in low Earth orbit, it's impractical (costly at best, and technically unfeasible at worst) for more distant destinations.

So the European Space Agency (ESA) has launched project HOBI-WAN ("Hydrogen Oxidizing Bacteria In Weightlessness As a source of Nutrition"), part of the its Terrae Novae Exploration Programme, to test a powdered protein called Solein that can be manufactured in space with very few resources.

"This project aims at developing a key resource which will allow us to improve human spaceflight's autonomy, resilience and also the well-being of our astronauts," Angelique Van Ombergen, ESA's chief exploration scientist, said in a statement.

"For human beings to be able to implement long-duration missions on the moon, or even one day to go to Mars, will require innovative and sustainable solutions to be able to survive with limited supplies."

Solein could be one such solution. It's a highly versatile powdered protein from Finnish food technology company Solar Foods that's made from microbes, air and electricity, via a gas fermentation process.

While Solar Foods has demonstrated the technology on Earth, slightly different techniques will need to be used in space. For instance, on Earth, ammonia serves as a nitrogen source for protein synthesis.

But in space, the source would be urea — an organic compound found in urine.

Over the next eight months, Solar Foods will work with prime contractor OHB System AG on the ground to develop the technology necessary to test Solein production in space. If successful, Solein production would then be tested aboard the ISS.

"The aim of the project is to confirm that our organism grows in the space environment as it does on the ground, and to develop the fundamentals of gas fermentation technology to be used in space — something that has never been done before in the history of humankind," Arttu Luukanen, senior vice president of space and defence at Solar Foods, said in a statement.

"The behavior of gases and liquids in microgravity is vastly different due to lack of buoyancy, which can drastically affect the transport of nutrients and gases for Solein microbes," Luukanen added.

When I imagine the future of space commerce, the first image that comes to mind is a farmer's market on the International Space Station. This doesn't exist yet, but space commerce is a growing industry.

The Space Foundation, a nonprofit organization for education and advocacy of space, estimates that the global space economy rose to US$613 billion in 2024, up nearly 8% from 2023, and 250 times larger than all business at farmer's markets in the United States.

This number includes launch vehicles, satellite hardware, and services provided by these space-based assets, such as satellite phone or internet connection.

Companies involved in spaceflight have been around since the start of the Space Age. By the 1980s, corporate space activity was gaining traction.

President Ronald Reagan saw the need for a federal agency to oversee and guide this industry and created the Office of Space Commerce, or OSC.

So, what exactly does this office do and why is it important?

As a space scientist, I am interested in how the U.S. regulates commercial activities in space. In addition, I teach a course on space policy.

In class, we talk about the OSC and its role in the wider regulatory landscape affecting commercial use of outer space.

The OSC's focus areas

The Office of Space Commerce, an office of about 50 people, exists within the Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

To paraphrase its mission statement, its chief purpose is to enable a robust U.S. commercial interest in outer space.

OSC has three main focus areas. First, it is the office responsible for licensing and monitoring how private U.S. companies collect and distribute orbit-based images of Earth.

There are many companies launching satellites with special cameras to look back down at the Earth these days. Companies offer a variety of data products and services from such imagery – for instance, to improve agricultural land use.

A second primary job of OSC is space advocacy. OSC works with the other U.S. government agencies that also have jurisdiction over commercial use of outer space to make the regulatory environment easier.

This includes working with the Federal Aviation Administration on launch licensing, the Federal Communications Commission on radio wavelength usage and the Environmental Protection Agency on rules about the hazardous chemicals in rocket fuel.

This job also includes coordinating with other countries that allow companies to launch satellites, collect data in orbit and offer space-based services.

In 2024, for example, the OSC helped revise the U.S. Export Administration Regulations, one of the main documents restricting the shipping of advanced technologies out of the country.

This change removed some limitations, allowing American companies to export certain types of spacecraft to three countries: Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.

The OSC also coordinates commercial satellites' flight paths in near-Earth space, which is its third and largest function.

The Department of Defense keeps track of thousands of objects in outer space and issues alerts when the probability of a collision gets high.

In 2018, President Donald Trump issued Space Policy Directive-3, which included tasking OSC to take this role over for nongovernment satellites – that is, those owned by companies, not NASA or the military.

The Department of Defense wants out of the job of traffic management involving privately owned satellites, and Trump's directive in 2018 started the process of handing off this task to OSC.

Russia sees readiness from the administration of US President Donald Trump to continue dialogue but undoing the damage done to bilateral ties under Joe Biden will take significant time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

In addition to ongoing discussions on resolving the Ukraine conflict, Russia and the US held two rounds of high-level talks in Saudi Arabia and Türkiye earlier this year, dedicated to restoring the proper functioning of diplomatic missions and other forms of cooperation.

A planned third round of negotiations did not take place, with Moscow saying it was canceled by the US.

In an interview with RIA Novosti on Saturday, Lavrov said there are “many irritants in Russian-American relations, inherited from the previous US administration [of Joe Biden],” adding that “it will take a long time to clear up the mess.”

After the arrival of the Trump administration in January, Moscow “sensed willingness to resume dialogue. It is happening, but not as quickly as we would like,” the foreign minister stressed.

According to Lavrov, US-Russia discussions must not solely focus on the work of diplomatic missions, but also address the issues of the return of “illegally” seized Russian diplomatic property and the restoration of air links between the two countries.

Russia and the US drastically limited the number of each other’s diplomatic staff as relations deteriorated over the past decade.

In late 2016, the administration of outgoing US President Barack Obama restricted Russian diplomats’ access to residences in New York and Maryland, and later seized additional Russian properties.

The suspension of flights and closure of US airspace to Russian carriers were among the sanctions imposed on Moscow by the Biden administration after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.

"Our proposals regarding both diplomatic real estate and air travel have been conveyed to the US side. Working contacts are currently underway regarding the possibility of continuing dialogue,” Lavrov said.

Last month, Trump imposed sanctions on Russian oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil, citing lack of progress in peace talks on Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that the “unfriendly move” would not hurt Russia’s economy, but could hamper the normalization process with Washington.

NATO won’t risk war with Russia over Ukraine – former bloc chief

NATO will not send troops to Ukraine as it could lead to a direct clash with Russia, the bloc’s former secretary-general, Jens Stoltenberg, has said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned in September that Moscow would consider any unauthorized Western military personnel in Ukraine as “legitimate targets.”

The “dragging of Ukraine into NATO was one of the causes of the conflict” between Moscow and Kiev, he stressed.

In an interview with The Times on Saturday, Stoltenberg recalled that NATO members made two key decisions during a meeting in Brussels after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.

“One was to step up our support for Ukraine, as we did. The other was to do what we could to prevent this war from escalating beyond Ukraine and become a full-scale war between Russia and NATO,” he said.

The former NATO chief cited then-US President Joe Biden, who stated at the time that “we will not risk a third world war for Ukraine.”

According to Stoltenberg, Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky also understood that. “He called me from a bunker in Kiev… and he said: ‘I accept you are not sending in NATO ground troops, though I disagree. But please close the airspace,’” he said.

Stoltenberg said he denied the request to shut down airspace over fears of escalation, but described it as “extremely painful” to end the call that way. Later in the conflict, Zelensky continued to urge NATO to put boots on the ground.

Stoltenberg admitted that there is an “element of contradiction” when NATO says it wants Kiev to prevail but refuses to deploy its own troops to Ukraine and only focuses on arms deliveries. He added, however, that he believes this is “the right approach.”

The bloc needs to supply even more weapons to Ukraine to “make it stronger on the battlefield” so that Moscow agrees to a ceasefire along the current contact line proposed by Kiev and the West, Stoltenberg insisted.

Russia has rejected the idea of a truce, saying that Ukraine and its NATO backers will only use it to rearm and set up new defense lines. According to Moscow, the conflict requires a permanent solution that would address its root causes.

Drones attack major energy facility in Russia’s Voronezh – media

Overnight on Sunday, November 9, drones attacked Voronezh CHPP-1 (combined heat and power plant) in Russia, the city’s largest supplier of heat for residential buildings and major industrial enterprises.

Ukrinform reports this with reference to the Astra Telegram channel. Local residents reported explosions during the night, and some households experienced power outages.

Regional governor Aleksandr Gusev announced a missile alert in the region.

Messages appeared in local chat groups claiming that the power plant caught fire during the attack.

An eyewitness captured the moment of the strike on video. According to Astra’s analysis, the footage shows Voronezh CHPP-1 located within the city.

According to publicly available data, the combined heat and power plant is part of JSC RIR Energo. Its installed electric capacity is 378.3 MW, and its heat output is 1,389.3 Gcal per hour.

CHPP-1 supplies heating to four districts of Voronezh as well as more than a thousand enterprises, including the city’s largest plant, Voronezhsintezkauchuk.

As Ukrinform reported, on the night of November 6, a group of drones attacked several key fuel and energy facilities in Russia.

During an tense exchange at a Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections meeting on Friday, boardmembers had a revealing argument over the 2020 elections records, including ballots, which are now subject to a Department of Justice investigation as well as previous Georgia State Election Board subpoenas.

The only question is: where are the ballots?

This was asked by the lone Republican boardmember, Julie Adams, sparking a heated debate.

Chairwoman Sherri Allen immediately interjected when Adams asked Elections Director Nadine Williams, “Do we have the 2020 ballots?”

“Miss Williams, Do not answer that. That is a matter that is currently, I believe, in litigation as well. And Ms. Adams, you well know that as well,” Allen shot back before Adams defended her right to ask the question.

Williams contempously told Adams, “As you’ve been told several times, the ballots are in the possession of the Clerk of Superior Court. She continued, “They are physically in the Clerk of Superior Court warehouse and secured in that location. They have been there for five years.”

When Adams stated that she was told the ballots were in the County’s posession at the warehouse, Williams accused her of lying, stating, “ Nobody told you that. They are in the clerk’s posession.” Chairwoman Allen then shut the debate down, arguing that the matter is before the court and the public will just have to wait for their ruling “soon.”

The board faced numerous public comments about the outstanding questions surrounding the 2020 election and ongoing investigations by the DOJ. Prior to the exchange over 2020 ballots, Julie Adams had questioned whether decisions about the subpoenas and 2020 election are subject to backroom executive session discussions. Sherri Allen had refused to hold any further public discussion or actions on the 2020 election subpoenas when Adams asked the golden question.

Fulton County came under fire and is beleived to be the epicenter of voter fraud in Georgia’s 2020 election.

As The Gateway Pundit recently reported, Fulton County has come into the crosshairs of the DOJ’s Associate Deputy Attorney General Ed Martin and Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon of the Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon months after Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene submitted a formal request to the Department of Justice to investigate the 2020 Election in Georgia, specifically in Fulton County.

This comes after the Georgia State Election Board issued a subpoena to Fulton County for the physical paper ballots, ballot envelopes, and ballot stubs that are under a preservation order while litigation is pending in 2024.

Ed Martin’s letter to Judge Robert McBurney to “access the approximately 148,000 absentee ballots and envelopes” at the Fulton County warehouse. Harmeet Dhillon’s letter also requested access to the coveted 2020 election evidence.

Notably, Dhillon’s letter gives 15 days for a response, which appears to represent the first time the DOJ has issued a deadline for a response regarding an investigation specifically into the 2020 election.

Meanwhile, VoterGA has been waiting more than 1,000 days for its case to unseal the physical paper ballots for inspection to be heard in the local courts since the Georgia Supreme Court sent the case back in December 2022.

Convicted criminal Ghislaine Maxwell has cheerfully gushed about her splendid life inside a new low-level prison in Texas, and even compared it to the fantasy world of Alice in Wonderland. 

Jeffrey Epstein's madame, who is serving 20 years for her role in recruiting and trafficking minors for sex for him, gladly opened up about her cushy new prison life that makes her feel 'safer' and 'more comfortable' compared to her old digs.

'The institution is run in an orderly fashion which makes for a safer more comfortable environment for all people concerned, inmates and guards alike,' the 63-year-old wrote in an email to a relative obtained by NBC News. 

'In other words I feel like I have dropped through Alice in Wonderlands looking glass. I am much much happier here and more importantly safe,' the dead financer's right-hand woman said. 

'So yes everyone can breath [sic] a sigh,' she added.  

Maxwell went on to discuss how much cleaner the facility is and even gave a special nod to Tanisha Hall, the warden of Federal Prison Camp Bryan - where she is serving her sentence. 

'Bryan is a different beast in every possible respect to Tal. It is a well managed well run institution with an execellent [sic] Warden who leads from the top. 

'She is a true professional and the best representative of the BOP I have met,' she said of Hall. 

The disgraced socialite also boasted about the lack of violent behavior from behind bars and the excellent food service she receives. 

'The food is legions better, the place is clean, the staff responsive and polite - I haven't seen or heard the usual foul language or screaming accompanied by threats leveled at inmates by anyone,' Maxwell wrote. 

She added: 'I have not seen a single fight, drug deal, passed out person or naked inmate running around or several of them congregating in a shower!' 

In another correspondence she detailed how thrilled she was to know that wild animals aren't contaminating the food and kitchen space. 

'The kitchen looks clean too — no possums falling from the celling [sic] to fry unfortunately on ovens, and become mingled with the food being served,' she stated. 

The emails were shared with the House Judiciary Committee after Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland wrote to Hall on October 20 inquiring about Maxwell's reported lavish treatment behind bars. 

The Texas prison, which is not known for housing inmates convicted of sexual-related crimes like hers, became Maxwell's new home in July after she had a meeting with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche about the alleged Epstein files.

The files were believed to include a reported VIP client list created by the dead pedophile of those who were involved in Epstein's sick scheme, but according to Maxwell no such list exists. 

Although Maxwell seems very happy to share her new living conditions, her attorney David Oscar Markus said it's about time people 'get over the fact that she is in a safer facility' and that 'there's nothing journalistic about publishing a prisoner's private emails.' 

He added: 'Anyone still interested in that kind of gossip reveals far more about themselves than about Ghislaine. It’s time to get over the fact that she is in a safer facility. We should want that for everyone.' 

The felon's brother, Ian Maxwell, said his messages with his sister are between them, so he believes 'they were stolen and leaked without authorisation [sic] and represent a breach of intellectual property rights and the fundamental right of all citizens to privacy.' 

Her emails suggest Maxwell might be getting special help behind bars, especially from the warden. 

In a September correspondence, Maxwell shared how Hall helped her when she ran into an issue with receiving documents by a specific deadline to appeal before the Supreme Court. 

Her creative solution was that you EM/scan it to her and she will scan back my changes! Of course that is fantastic as it saves days and days,' she said of the warden.

UK to help protect Belgium after suspected Russian drone incursions

Britain is providing military support to Belgium after a series of suspected Russian drone incursions into its airspace, the new chief of the defence staff has said.

Sir Richard Knighton told the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg that his Belgian counterpart had asked for assistance earlier this week and that equipment and personnel were now on the way.

Brussels Airport was forced to close temporarily on Thursday night after drones were spotted nearby. They were also seen in other locations, including a military base.

It follows a series of drone incursion over several Nato nations that disrupted air travel. Russia has denied accusations of conducting "hybrid warfare" on allies of Ukraine.

Sir Richard said it was not known for sure if the incursions were by Russia, but that it was "plausible" they had been ordered by Moscow.

Defence Secretary John Healey said in a statement: "As hybrid threats grow, our strength lies in our alliances and our collective resolve to defend, deter and protect our critical infrastructure and airspace".

Members of the RAF's 2 Force Protection Wing are likely to be deployed, the BBC understands.

Alongside Nato allies, Sir Richard added that the UK would help Belgium "by providing our kit and capability".

The German defence ministry said on Friday that it too would support Belgium with anti-drone measures after a request from Brussels.

About 3,000 Brussels Airlines passengers were affected by Thursday's disruption, with the carrier saying it faced "considerable costs" from cancelling or diverting dozens of flights.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and the Belgian security services have said they suspect Russia of being behind the incursion, but Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken previously indicated there was no evidence to suggest this.

"At first, drones flying over our military bases were seen as our problem," Francken said earlier this week.

"Now it has become a serious threat affecting civilian infrastructure across multiple European countries."

Ukraine's state-owned energy company says all of its power plants are down after Russia's 'largest-ever attack'

All thermal power plants (TPP) operated by Ukraine's state-owned energy company Centrenergo are down following "the largest Russian attack" which targeted all of them, the company announced on Nov. 8.

According to the company, the same thermal power plants that had been restored after attacks in 2024 were struck again, with multiple Russian drones targeting them "each minute" overnight on Nov. 8.

Ukrainian forces downed 406 out of the 458 drones, including Shahed-type attack drones, launched by Russia overnight, the Air Force reported. Russia also launched 45 cruise and ballistic missiles, nine of which were downed, the statement said.

Centrenergo operates three thermal power plants, which were essentially all the company's assets: Trypillia in Kyiv Oblast, Zmiivska in Kharkiv Oblast, and Vuhlehirska in Donetsk Oblast.

Last spring, Centrenergo announced that the Zmiivska thermal power plant had beed completely destroyed. On July 25, 2022, Russian troops occupied the Vuhlehirska thermal power plant.

The recent attack destroyed all restored capacity, leaving the plants generating no power, the company said.

"For safety reasons, we remained silent, but we did everything possible to ensure that Ukrainians got through the last winter with electricity and heat, overcoming hellish challenges to successfully start the current heating season," Centrenergo said.

"Less than a month has passed since the previous strike, and last night the enemy again hit all of our power generation facilities simultaneously."

Throughout the fall, Russia has intensified attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure as it attempts to plunge the country into yet another harsh winter. One of the worst strikes on Oct. 3 and 5 wiped out around 60% of Ukraine’s gas production sites.

During the Nov. 8 attack Russia primarily targeted the cities of Kremenchuk in Poltava Oblast, Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv, causing emergency power cuts in several regions.

Polish MPs reject push to outlaw glorification of Ukrainian Nazi collaborators

President Karol Nawrocki sought to ban the promotion of groups that massacred Polish civilians during World War II

The Polish parliament has rejected a bill proposed by President Karol Nawrocki that sought to criminalize the public glorification of Ukrainian nationalist movements that collaborated with Nazi Germany during World War II.

In August, Nawrocki vetoed a bill on benefits for Ukrainian refugees, arguing that the measure gave them “excessive privileges” and should be tied to employment and tax contributions.

The president’s alternative proposal also aimed to introduce tougher penalties for illegal border crossings and tighten rules for acquiring Polish citizenship. Other amendments would have expanded Article 256 of Poland’s Penal Code, which prohibits the promotion of totalitarian ideologies, to include the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).

However, parliament later adopted a similar act limiting assistance to Ukrainian citizens – without Nawrocki’s harshest provisions – and lawmakers filed a motion to reject the duplicate.

On Friday, the lower house of parliament, the Sejm, voted 244-198, with 3 abstentions, to dismiss the presidential draft, RMF24 radio reported.

Liège Airport air traffic halted again after drone sighting

Air traffic at Liège Airport was suspended for about 30 minutes on Saturday evening following the sighting of an unidentified drone, Belgian air traffic control agency skeyes confirmed.

Takeoffs and landings were halted around 19:00 after the drone was spotted in the vicinity of the airport. Operations gradually resumed around 19:30, and the airport is now “fully operational again,” according to skeyes.

This marks the third such disruption in recent days. Air traffic at Liège Airport was temporarily suspended on Thursday and Friday for similar reasons, while flights to and from both Liège and Brussels Airports were halted earlier in the week after drone activity was detected near restricted airspace.

Belgian authorities have also logged multiple drone incursions near military bases in recent weeks. The origin of these flights remains under investigation, but security services are reportedly examining the possibility of Russian involvement.
