The federal government has requested that First Nations chiefs submit their questions prior to meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney to discuss approvals for major projects.
The recently passed Bill C-5, also known as the One Canadian Economy Act, allows the government to support the development of major projects deemed to be in national interest, such as pipelines, ports, and railways. Ottawa can allow some projects to bypass some provisions of certain laws, and aims to reduce the approval times for projects to two years.
Following the bill’s passage in Parliament in late June, the government said it would immediately hold consultations with the provinces, territories, and indigenous groups around the projects. Carney has said he plans to hold meetings with First Nations on July 17 in Ottawa, followed by meetings with Inuit leadership later in July, and with Métis leadership soon after.
Ottawa has said that indigenous consultation is a priority of the legislation, which facilitates this via the new major projects office, supported by an Indigenous Advisory Council with First Nation, Inuit, and Métis representation to ensure the approval of projects honours indigenous rights enshrined in the Constitution Act of 1982.
Several indigenous groups have raised concerns that Bill C-5 would weaken existing requirements related to indigenous consultation and environmental protections.
The chiefs of the First Nations have been given a deadline of July 16 to submit the questions they would like answered, and will also be given the option to vote on which questions their peers will pose. The invitation to the July 17 meeting states that this process will help highlight “shared priorities and bring the most pressing issues to the forefront.” Continue…

As Avril Lavigne was about to take the stage at the Festival d’été de Québec (FEQ) last week, many other Canadian artists were no doubt wondering why the organizers of Canada’s largest outdoor music festival had to go make things so complicated for them.
The FEQ began on July 3 — just as it was being hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit from the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN), National Post has learned.
The not-for-profit group, which is responsible for granting licences and collecting royalties on licensed music in Canada, claims in the lawsuit filed in Federal Court that since at least July 2022 the festival’s organizers “have failed to obtain a license from SOCAN and have not paid any royalties or submitted any report forms to SOCAN.” The Festival International d’été de Québec Inc. and Bleufeu, another organizer, are named as the defendants. Plans to reform the UK’s criminal justice system – including the scrapping of jury trials for some offences and reduced sentences for those who plead guilty – are all part of larger “reforms” that would empower tyrannical authoritarianism.
Former senior judge and current Investigatory Powers Commissioner Brian Leveson made the news this week with the publication of his report recommending, among other things, “jury-free” trials, in order to “prevent the collapse of the criminal justice system”.
Note the language, by the way. “Jury-free“, not “jury-less“, as if juries are a food additive we should avoid, rather than a right guaranteed in British law for over 800 years.
This is not new. “Replacing”, “updating” or otherwise “reforming” Jury trials has been on the worldwide agenda for years now.
Within weeks of “Covid” starting, Scotland moved to suspend jury trials entirely (a move so unpopular they reversed it within 24 hours). At the same time, noted lawyers wrote opinion pieces for the Guardian headlined:
“Coronavirus has stopped trials by jury, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing”

France Opens Criminal Investigation Into X For Alleged Algorithmic Manipulation

The French Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into X over the alleged use of its algorithm for foreign interference.
According to a statement from Magistrate Laure Beccuau on Friday, prosecutors have launched a probe into whether X violated French law by manipulating its algorithms to extract user data fraudulently.
The investigation was launched after two reports were submitted to the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office’s cybercrime division on Jan. 12 — one by MP Éric Bothorel, a member of French President Emmanuel Macron’s Ensemble Pour La Republique party, and another by a senior government official whose identity was not disclosed.
In Bothorel’s statement posted Friday on X, he wrote that he filed his initial inquiry because he was “convinced that an informational bias, extreme on the X platform, was being used to serve Elon Musk’s political opinions and that this could only happen through algorithmic manipulation.”
He added that he was pleased that the “French justice system is taking meaningful steps to combat foreign interference.”
The case was referred to the General Directorate of the National Gendarmerie on Wednesday, officially launching an investigation into X.
The investigation focuses on two elements: tampering with the operation of an automated data processing system as part of an organized group, and the fraudulent extraction of data from an automated data processing system as part of an organized group.
France’s J3 cybercrime unit will lead the investigation. J3 conducted an investigation that led to the arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov in August 2024. Continue…

The former head of the British Army has warned that war between the UK and Russia is a “real possibility” in the next five years and therefore Westminster must invest to bolster the nation’s depleted defence capabilities.
Gen Sir Patrick Sanders, who led the British Army from 2022 to 2024, lamented that London does not appear to be taking the defence of Britain seriously in light of the potential threat of war with Moscow.
The former head of the Army said that it is a realistic possibility for a hot war involving Russia and the UK within the next five years, warning that the current environment is more dangerous than during the Cold War.
Speaking to The Telegraph, Sanders noted that any attack from Russia on a fellow NATO ally could trigger Article 5, which would mandate Britain to come to their aid. In the case of the Baltic states, Gen Sir Patrick pointed out that there is a British battle group stationed in Estonia, meaning that if a Russian attack were to occur there, “British troops would be involved from day one”.
