Facing potential legal penalties for exercising their First Amendment rights, Grosse Pointe Farms activists Chrisoula Pitses and Ian Seaman stand defiant as local authorities target their provocative lawn signs challenging transphobia and Trump rhetoric.

The couple's conflict with local authorities began in early March. According to Ian Seaman's account as told to Pride Source, on March 10, while standing with signs at a four-way stop, he encountered a Grosse Pointe Farms police officer who lives in Grosse Pointe Woods. After a brief exchange about drivers rolling through the stop sign, Seaman claims the officer became hostile, saying "Fuck you, I'll get Woods PD out here," before speeding off and giving him the middle finger. Later that day, police arrived and instructed Seaman to move his signs to private property, which he did.

What started as handwritten cardboard signs on their lawn in Grosse Pointe Farms — including one that posed a mocking question: "IS THE 'TRANS AGENDA' IN THE ROOM WITH US RIGHT NOW?" — quickly escalated into a series of confrontations with local officials.

By March 11-12, the displays expanded to include signs about controversial religious figures. One sign juxtaposed Catholic clergy with drag performers, with text reading "One group playing dress up has definitely hurt children."

During this period, the couple had multiple interactions with police officers regarding sign placement, first on public easements, then on trees and finally on their private property and vehicle. Seaman told Pride Source that on March 12, three police officers came to their front door and allegedly used profanity while demanding they remove signs stapled to trees on the easement. When Pitses identified herself as an attorney, the officers still refused to leave until the signs were removed.

On March 18, the couple received an official notice regarding their signs, which appeared to be backdated to their first interaction with authorities on March 10. The next day, March 19, Pitses and Seaman received an ordinance violation ticket from the Grosse Pointe Woods Department of Public Safety. Officials cited both the size of their lawn signs and their content as problematic, raising First Amendment questions since sign permits typically regulate only physical characteristics, not content.

Among their various displays was a sign challenging conservative hypocrisy by pointing out that "truck nuts" have faced minimal backlash despite their explicit nature, while discussions of transgender rights are deemed "inappropriate."

In a video recorded by Seaman, Grosse Pointe Police stated that the signs were inappropriate because their home is close to a school and families live nearby. They deemed the signs vulgar and demanded their removal.

According to Section 7.04 of the Grosse Pointe City Zoning Ordinance, yard signs must not exceed a combined 15 square feet and must be under 4 feet in height. The ordinance makes no explicit mention of content restrictions. Pitses and Seaman maintain their signs complied with the size requirements, though city officials indicated on their notice that residential signs are limited to 6 square feet.

When confronted about the signs, the couple moved them to their van. The city inspector, the couple reports, threatened to call law enforcement if the vehicle was transferred to the street. The couple expanded their protest by decorating the vehicle with orange lettering declaring "GPPD HATES FREE SPEECH" and "CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE IS AMERICAN."

"It's American. It's part of our culture, every great advancement of freedoms has been fought for through civil disobedience, despite the power of the government being derived from the consent of the people," Seaman told Pride Source.

The battle over free expression — particularly around LGBTQ+ rights — has intensified across Michigan communities. Last year in Hamtramck, the city council removed two Human Relations Commission members for flying a Pride flag on city property, despite Attorney General Dana Nessel joining protests against the ban.

This isn't Grosse Pointe's first sign controversy. In 2020, the GPPD asked attorney and current mayoral candidate Todd Perkins to remove his Black Lives Matter sign, and in 2004, the Michigan ACLU sued the city for an unconstitutional sign ordinance after Mary Adzigian received a notice for her John Kerry sign while neighbors' Bush signs remained.

"This demonstration has exposed double standards," Seaman said. "If there were a Venn diagram of people who support curtailing my right to speak freely and people who don't believe in any form of gun control, we would be looking at an individual circle."

The situation could be seen as a microcosm of the rift that has developed in the country over the last decade, with attempts to enforce a culture of silence and protest against the right. "I don't know that it will be transformational in terms of our legal landscape, as this is primarily an example of unelected bureaucrats using the courts to harass normal citizens for having a contrarian opinion," Seaman said about the case that has now entered the court of public opinion.

A Facebook post about the lawn signs sparked community debate about fair application of the First Amendment. The comment section was filled with varying opinions including questioning others as to why they were offended by the content. It included direct quotes from President Trump and implied that Seaman wants an altercation. Some members supported the signs and found them essential to understanding the current administration. Seaman stated he wasn't trying to cause harm but hopes this will highlight the issue of silencing citizens.

Pitses and Seaman were to appear in court on March 27, but the date was adjourned. The city attorney requested that the adjournment be conditional upon Seaman complying with the citation, but Judge Theodore Metry denied this request — suggesting the court isn't automatically accepting the city's interpretation of its ordinance.

The pair will now appear in court at 9 a.m. April 9, following the city council meeting at 7 p.m. April 7.

Drone footage reveals devastation at Putra Heights, Malaysia gas explosion site

SUBANG JAYA: Authorities have released drone footage showing the extent of the destruction caused by the pipeline explosion in Putra Heights.

The video revealed a massive crater at the site, where water pumping operations were underway to remove accumulated water.

It also showed several rows of houses closest to the site destroyed, with only their concrete structures remaining and roofs completely missing.

The footage captured excavation work being carried out by the authorities using three excavators, one bulldozer, and one backhoe.

Operations are ongoing to expose the affected area and inspect the position of the Petronas pipeline, which is believed to lie at a depth of between six and seven metres.

Earlier, at a press conference held at the incident command centre nearby, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said authorities had assessed 439 houses in Putra Heights, with 220 declared safe following the gas pipeline fire.

He added that 320 houses were either safe or sustained damage of less than 20 per cent.

These houses, he said, were habitable, and repair works could begin today.

Hussein also said stabilisation works were underway, with the full operation divided into four phases.

He said that the installation of sheet piles would be carried out under phase two, aimed at stabilising the ground at the site of the fire before technical investigations can begin.

The work, Selangor's top police officer said, is scheduled to start tomorrow and continue until April 15.

On Tuesday, a massive fire broke out at a Petronas gas pipeline in Putra Heights, causing widespread panic as flames shot into the air.

The heat from the blaze - visible from kilometres away - was reported to have melted parts of vehicles and other items.

The flames also spread to nearby homes, as the pipeline is located close to residential areas.

Missile Strike on Kyiv Kills One Amid ‘Massive’ Attack

A missile attack on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv early Sunday killed one person and injured at least three people, city officials said, as missile and drone strikes across the country left at least one more person dead.

Russia "launched a massive nationwide attack on Ukraine using ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones" in the early hours of the morning. said first deputy prime minister Yulia Svyrydenko.

In Kyiv, explosions were heard overnight and a dark plume of smoke rose from the city early Sunday morning. The missile strke damaged a building housing the offices of state television channels that boradcast in foreign langauges.

Current data shows that one person has been killed. Three were wounded, including two who were hospitalized.

City mayor Vitali Klitschko said that "the body of a man killed in an enemy attack was discovered in Darnytsia district. He was on the street, near the epicentre of the explosion. The man's identity is being established."

Emergency services said that during attacks, fires broke out in Kyiv in non-residential buildings, damaging a multi-storey business centre, a furniture factory and warehouses.

The emergency services posted video of smoke rising from charred debris, a gutted hangar and a large multi-storey administrative building with the roof torn off and windows blown out.

Overnight, Russia attacked Ukraine with 23 cruise and ballistic missiles and 109 drones, the Ukrainian air force said, causing damage to six regions.

The Air Force said it shot down 13 of the missiles and 40 drones, while 54 others caused no damage.

In the southern Kherson region, a drone killed a 59-year-old man. In the northeastern Kharkiv region, near the border with Russia, two were injured in an attack using guided aerial bombs, regional officials said.

In western Ukraine's Khmelnytsky region, authorities said air defences destroyed a missile. But falling fragments damaged a house and injured a woman.

The attacks come as U.S. President Donald Trump pushes for a partial ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, more than three years into Moscow's full-scale invasion, seeking a thaw in ties with the Kremlin.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's chief of staff Andriy Yermak said Sunday, "The language of force is the only one that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin understands. All our partners need to switch to this language."

'Weak reaction'

The latest attacks came two days after a missile attack on the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih killed 18 people, including nine children, on Friday evening.

Zelensky slammed the U.S. embassy for what he called a "weak" statement that did not blame Russia for the deadly missile strike on his home city.

"Unfortunately, the reaction of the American embassy is unpleasantly surprising: such a strong country, such a strong people — and such a weak reaction," he wrote.

"They are even afraid to say the word 'Russian' when talking about the missile that killed the children."

The Ukrainian president took aim at the U.S. Ambassador Bridget Brink after she posted a message on X on Friday that said: "Horrified that tonight a ballistic missile struck near a playground and restaurant."

In subsequent posts, Brink has referred to Russia as the aggressor, writing on Sunday morning that Ukraine was "under a ballistic and cruise missile attack from Russia."

On Sunday, Zelensky said that the number of air attacks from Russia was increasing, proving that international pressure on Moscow was insufficient.

Talks with French, British military chiefs

Trump is pushing the two sides to agree to a ceasefire. But his administration has failed to broker an accord acceptable to both.

Zelensky on Saturday hailed "tangible progress" after meeting British and French military chiefs in Kyiv on Friday to discuss a plan by London and Paris to send a "reassurance" force to Ukraine if and when a deal on ending the conflict is reached.

The Ukrainian president wrote on social media that the meeting with British Chief of the Defence Staff Tony Radakin and French counterpart Thierry Burkhard had agreed "the first details on how the security contingent of partners can be deployed".

This is one of the latest efforts by European leaders to agree on a coordinated policy after Trump sidelined them and opened direct talks with the Kremlin.

Virginia Giuffre claims she is the victim of domestic violence at hands of her husband who 'beat her' before her car accident - as family say crash 'saved her life'

After posting a social media post claiming she had 'four days to live', Virginia Giuffre has now claimed she suffered from domestic violence in her marriage.

Giuffre - an alleged victim of disgraced American financier Jeffrey Epstein who has accused Prince Andrew of abusing her as a teen, which the royal denies - shared a disturbing post of her bruised face last Sunday after a bus crash.

She had been involved in a collision with a bus travelling in rural Western Australia on March 24, but the bus driver, WA Police and multiple other witnesses said the crash was not as serious as she had made out online. 

Now, the 41-year-old has said she can 'no longer stay silent' about alleged domestic violence in her marriage - as she is due in court accused of breaching a restraining order.

Giuffre and her husband Robert share three children and currently live in Perth, Australia, but have recently split up after 22 years of marriage.

In a statement to People, she said: 'I was able to fight back against Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein who abused and trafficked me. But I was unable to escape the domestic violence in my marriage until recently. After my husband's latest physical assault, I can no longer stay silent.' 

'Again, I thank everyone for their support. I have faith that justice will prevail.'

Her husband has not responded to the allegations. It comes as Giuffre is due to appear at Joondalup Magistrates Court on April 9 to address an alleged restraining order violation by texting Robert on February 2 in Perth.

Giuffre was reportedly assaulted on January 9, 2025, in Dunsborough, Western Australia.

During a trip to celebrate one of the children's birthdays, Robert allegedly assaulted his wife.

Her spokeswoman said she was transported to the hospital for her injuries.

They claimed Robert filed a family violence restraining order against her soon after, alleging that she had become violent with him.

Such orders, according to Australian law, are made to protect family members, including children, at risk of physical, financial, emotional, psychological and sex abuse.

But they are also regarded as highly controversial because of the way in which they can be used by warring spouses who wish to weaponise the court system in their favour. 

Last week, Giuffre wrote on Instagram: 'I've gone into kidney renal failure, they've given me four days to live, transferring me to a specialist hospital in urology.'

Giuffre's father, Sky Roberts, clarified her 'four days to live' claim, saying she was told by doctors she would have died in that time frame if she did not receive treatment - and said the crash may have been a 'blessing in disguise'.

Nigeria joins global smart cities with high-resolution drone mapping initiative

The Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation (OSGoF) has launched a high-resolution drone mapping initiative in Abuja, marking a major step towards Nigeria’s smart city ambitions.

At a workshop in Abuja, the Surveyor General, Surv. Abuduganiyu Adeyemi Adebomehin, emphasized that the project will enhance urban planning, security, and disaster management. “This technology ensures Nigeria remains competitive globally,” he stated.

The initiative, which uses Very High-Resolution Drone Imagery and Street View Data, has mapped 20 out of 25 designated zones in the Federal Capital Territory.

TAMPA, Fla. – A 22-year-old man was arrested after fleeing from deputies who attempted to serve him with a warrant for possession of an operable machine gun, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).

The incident occurred on April 3, 2025. Deputies attempted to serve the warrant to Carl Bennett, but the man fled on foot.

She described the ammunition control as one that “[refines] how credit card companies track purchases at gun dealerships.”

Germany: AfD Surges to Tie for First Place as Establishment Party ‘Crashes’ After Election Win

Six weeks after voters in Germany went to the polls for the federal elections, there appears to be growing dissatisfactionwith the outcome, as more Germans shift their support to the populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

According to the latest survey from Insa on behalf of the Bild newspaper,=the AfD has soared to a record 24 per cent support. This puts the upstart party on par with the election-winning ‘Union’ of the Christian Democratic Union(CDU) and the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU), which collectively also now stand at 24 per cent in support.

This represents a dramatic switch from the February elections, when the Union received 28.5 per cent of the vote, compared to 20.8 per cent for the AfD, meaning that the CDU/CSU has lost the support of one in six of its voters since the election.

“The Union is crashing dramatically. There has never been such a loss of approval between the federal election and the formation of a government,” Insa chief Hermann Binkert said.

After winning the election, CDU leader Friedrich Merz immediately entered into coalition talks with the Social Democrats (SPD) despite voters clearly rejecting the leftist party at the ballot box after years of failed governance under outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

The SPD currently stands at 16 per cent in the polls, followed by the Greens and The Left, both of whom stand at 11 per cent.

Merz had boxed himself into working with the left-wing party, given that he had previously vowed to uphold the “firewall” of establishment parties refusing to work with the AfD.

By immediately announcing his intention to form a government with the SPD, Merz lost much of his ability to negotiate during talkswith the left-wing party, which continue to this day, leaving the country without a government for a month and a half since the election.

Thus, Merz was forced to caveto demands from the SPD and the far-left Greens before he even came to power.

For example,he retracted his hardline immigration rhetoric. He broke his vow to be a fiscal conservative by agreeing to a trillion euro spending package, which was split between defence, infrastructure, and green agenda items.

“Many voters get the impression that the Union has not yet prevailed in the coalition talks.Many voters are disappointed by this,” said Binkert.

Meanwhile, with the administration’s support, Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) is leading a new Congressional Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets.

The Administration and Rep. Luna have also expressed support for releasing information on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP).

I believe that if Rep. Luna’s Task Force or the Administration looks in the right places, they will discover a trove of unclassified UAP imagery that is being unnecessarily and improperly withheld from the public.

This imagery will not reveal classified sources or methods, which is the common refrain used to deny access to Congress and the American public.

Rather, this information can impart important knowledge about UAP, mitigating the potential for strategic surprise.

Liberating this data can provide a boon to UAP researchers; help raise public awareness regarding unmanned vehicles and the strategic challenges they pose for our country; and help to restore the public’s faith in the ability of civilian policymakers to manage a huge and all-too-often self-serving bureaucracy.

It is also an early and easy test case regarding the seriousness of the Congress’s and the Administration’s commitment to UAP transparency.

Over-Classification Is a Systemic Problem

There is already a strong bipartisan consensus in Washington regarding the need to combat excessive government secrecy.

We spend as much as $18 billion per year on classifying government documents, a number that does not fully account for the costs and inefficiencies this arcane system imposes.

As an analogy, the cost of filing taxes is not just the cost of hiring a tax preparer to do your taxes. A true cost would also account for the time lost due to the excessive complexity of federal tax laws.

Anyone who has worked in the intelligence community is well aware of the inefficiencies resulting from overclassification. Secrets are hoarded by separate fiefdoms and become a source of power; a commodity that can be traded for advantage.

Thousands of meetings each year are disrupted, delayed, or canceled due to problems conveying or confirming clearances; personnel can wait months or years for their clearances to be processed while contractors spend millions struggling to meet conflicting standards regarding physical security requirements imposed by different agencies.

I’ve seen the Three-Star Director of the National Security Agency turned away from an urgent White House meeting by a low-level Secret Service Agent because there was a discrepancy in the clearance information passed to the White House by the general’s security staff.

I’ve seen military officers wait for months to get access to their offices and computers because of lags in validating their clearances.

At one Air Force base I visited, access to each conference room at the headquarters was controlled by a different lieutenant without whose permission the room could not be used to discuss classified information.

As former Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Avril Haines said, “[D]eficiencies in the current classification system undermine our national security, as well as critical democratic objectives, by impeding our ability to share information in a timely manner.”

Over-Classification of UAP Imagery

My concerns stem from events that began in 2017 when I obtained three Navy UAP videos approved for public release by the DoD’s Office of Prepublication and Security Review (DOPSR).

I shared two of these unprecedented military UAP videos with The New York Times, and on December 16, 2017, they appeared in a front-page story entitled “Glowing Auras and ‘Black Money’: The Pentagon’s Mysterious U.F.O. Program.”

The third UAP video, also from a targeting pod aboard an F-18 aircraft, appeared in The Washington Post on March 9, 2018, together with an op-ed I wrote entitled, “The Military Keeps Encountering UFOs.

Why Doesn’t the Pentagon Care?” An inquiry by the Air Force Office of Special Investigation (AFOSI) confirmed that the videos were unclassified and their publication did not damage national security.

Trump Raises Logging Quota 25% to Harvest Timber, Prevent Fires

The Trump administration has raised logging quotas 25% in America’s national forests as part of a bid to increase timber production in the face of tariffs — and to prevent fires by removing fuel and creating firebreaks.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported:

In a move that could substantially reshape California’s natural landscape, the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued an emergency order Friday to accelerate timber harvesting across nearly 113 million acres of national forests.

The directive, announced byUSDA Secretary Brooke Rollins, mandates a 25%increase in timber quotas nationwide,with particular focus on areas of California, including the Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Los Padres and Cleveland national forests.

The order is part of a broader initiative to address what the Trump administration has called a “forest health crisis.”

The new order serves two purposes. One is to control fires. President Donald Trump said in January that the Los Angeles wildfires were partly caused by California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s refusal to clear brush and dead trees.

The other purpose, though unstated, is likely to increase the supply of lumberand head off potential price increases due to tariffs on Canadian lumber, which could have a cascading effect on the American construction industry.

Environmental groups slammed the move, while the logging industry welcomed the Trump administration’s decision.

Johnson Vows To Have Trump Agenda On President’s Desk By Memorial Day

Republican Speaker of the House and Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson is moving ahead with a plan to enact a massive portion of President Donald Trump’s agenda before summer arrives, according to Saturday reports.

The Speaker said that he and other Republican leaders are working hard to enact the president’s agenda before Memorial Day, Fox News reported.

“More than a year ago, the House began discussing the components of a reconciliation package that will reduce the deficit, secure our border, keep taxes low for families and job creators, reestablish American energy dominance, restore peace through strength, and make government more efficient and accountable to the American people. We are now one step closer to achieving those goals,” the Speaker and other Republican leaders said in a letter to the House GOP caucus.

“Today, the Senate passed its version of the budget resolution. Next week, the House will consider the Senate amendment,” he said.

Republicans intend to push a massive conservative policy agenda by using the reconciliation process, which is normally done when one party holds all three branches of government. The process lowers for a simple majority vote in the Senate — 51 — rather than the filibuster-proof 60-vote majority.

Bizarre theories for mystery 'alien' skeleton found on North Wales beach

A beach visitor was left mystified when she stumbled across skeletal remains washed up on Anglesey's eastern coast. With a large head and “spiky barbs”, at first glance, she thought it resembled some kind of “eel-like fish”.

Andrea Yates came across the slightly terrifying sight when strolling across Benllech beach. Keen to find an explanation for the peculiar-looking sea monster, she shared photos online.

Inevitably, some answers were flippant, others way off the mark. A few were convinced it was some kind of reptile.

One man suspected a long-departed "Dachshund". Following similar discoveries, people have even supposed the top half on a llama – on account of its long neck.

In the context of its discovery, on a pretty Anglesey beach, the skeleton looked otherworldly, leading some to suspect something extra-terrestrial – like the facehugger creature from the sci-fi horror Alien.

One man wondered if hadn’t “fallen from the Space X capsule on re-entry”. It being an island, there were plenty of local marine experts to point Andrea in the right direction.

One woman noted that several similar specimens had been found on Rhosneigr’s west coast beaches a couple of weeks previously.

In the past, Wildlife Trust beach cleans at Rhosneigr have turned up plenty of distinctive “Batman” egg cases – mermaid’s purses – laid by thornback rays.

Although not a ray hotspot for the island’s anglers, evidence thornbacks frequent the resort's waters came 18 months ago with the release of spectacular photos showing them as victims of a skilled predator, the Atlantic grey seal.

This probably explains the strange remains found at Benllech. Fully formed, the kite-shaped ray has a skeleton with delicate pectoral fans of soft cartilage.

When alive, these appear as flattened fins that act a bit like underwater wings.

Online, one man explained: “Seals eat the wings and leave the middle bit. (There are) too many spikes down the middle for the seal to eat.”

In other words, what Andrea found was likely the mutilated remains of a thornback.

Capable of growing to 3ft across, thornbacks are usually found next to rocky outcrops when they venture closer to shore in search of food.

Although their jaws are small, they are powerful to crush the shells of crabs and other crustaceans with ease. Neither are they beyond taking the occasional fish – after all, they are closely related to sharks.

As their name implies, thornbacks are renowned for the spikes they have on their backs and tails.

These backward-facing thorns - acting like modified “skin teeth” - are also covered with coarse prickles – defences designed to deter the over-inquisitive.

Anglers and commercial trawlers also separate thornbacks from their wings – the latter for the fish-and-chip market.

Given their vulnerability to over-fishing, catch size restrictions apply with smaller thornbacks being returned to the sea.

At Benllech, it’s more likely the thornback Andrea found was lunch for a seal rather than a human.

Trump Says ‘Every Country’ Has Called Him Since Tariff Announcement, UK PM ‘Very Happy’ With Being on Minimum Rate

President Donald Trump had “a very good dialogue” with Britain’s Prime Minister, who was “very happy” that his country wasn’t on the U.S. list of punishment tariffs.

The European Union reacted with horror at the United States levying a 20 per cent tariff on its exports, a rate twice that of former-member the United Kingdom, which is in the lowest bracket worldwide of ten per cent.The British government has, apart from cursory and general remarks against tariffs in principle, avoided such histrionics, and now President Trump has said he believes the country will have been very happy to get that outcome.

The remarks came on Air Force One on Thursday evening, and saw President Trump reflect of the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer: “…we have a very good dialogue going, and I think he was very happy about how we treated him on tariffs”.

Nevertheless, the United Kingdom government had hoped to avoid tariffs altogether by agreeing to a trade deal with Washington before the coming of Liberation Day.The fact the UK & U.S. haven’t had a trade deal signed and sealed for several years now is a huge indictment of the failure of the last Conservative government, at the very least, which was charged with delivering Brexit, but couldn’t get over its own opposition to leaving the European Union, nor its barely disguised distaste for term-one President Trump himself.

Incredibly, Conservative lawmakers this week have even had the nerve to criticise Labour for not getting a trade deal in months that their party failed to agree on in the years it was in power.

The present left-wing Labour government in the UK has little to nothing in common with Trump, but at least is determined to be pragmatic enough to work with him, and to get a trade deal to potentially side-step tariffs altogether. Having missed this first deadline, it is believed in London thatthis deal can now be achieved “within weeks” to get the UK below ten per cent tariffs, The Washington Post notes.

While the UK is not alone in taking this conciliatory approach to Trump to cement a place as a preferred partner, it is a small club. As reported,Australia, which are also working to achieve the same goal, has taken a similar tactic.

Illustrating the utility of tariffs as an engine of change,President Trump also said the tariff announcement has resulted in a stampede of countries beating a path to his doorto try and strike new deals to minimise their own exposure.

He said: “Every country has called us, that’s the beauty of what we do, we’ve put ourselves in the driving seat.If we’d asked most of these countries to do us a favour, they’d have said no, now they’ll do almost anything for us… the tariffs give us great power to negotiate”.

The President said he’d be willing to cut a deal in return for something “phenomenal.” Even for a close U.S. ally like the United Kingdom, there is speculation that the two countries’ growing divergence on the meaning of freedom, and particularly the observance of freedom of thought and expression in practice, could be a stumbling block to getting an even better deal on trade.

President Trump rejected the notion that tariffs would be ultimately damaging, using the metaphor of the economy as a sick patient who has to undergo serious surgery, which will be shocking but will put them on the road to recovery. He said: ” We inherited a terrible economy, as you know, with a lot of problems, including the loss of manufacturing and plants closed up and down the country. We’ve lost 90,000 plants since NAFTA… and about six million jobs, it’s a sick patient that went through an operation on liberation day, it’s going to be a booming country”.

Any business that wanted to dodge tariffs had to do nothing more complicated than open a factory in the United States, he said.
