Ukrainian military intelligence drones (HUR) attacked a camouflaged drone production facility in Kaluga Oblast late on March 12, HUR sources confirmed for the Kyiv Independent.

Drone production lines were located on the grounds of an aerated concrete plant in the village of Obukhovo in Kaluga Oblast's Dzerzhinsky district, one of the sources claimed.

Kyiv has carried out regular long-range drone strikes against military and industrial facilities in Russia's rear, seeking to undermine its ability to wage its all-out war.

The statement comes after Kaluga Oblast Governor Vladislav Shapsha said that 25 drones were downed over the region overnight, with drone wreckage setting fire to an unspecified industrial facility in Dzerzhinsky district.

One employee suffered minor injuries, and the fire has been extinguished, according to Shapsha. Locals reported powerful explosions and a fire at the plant on social media.

Drone debris also damaged a cell tower and a power line in the Khvastovichsky district, the southernmost part of Kaluga Oblast, Shapsha said.

Russian air defenses downed 77 drones overnight, including 30 over Bryansk Oblast, six over Kursk and Voronezh oblasts each, and five over Rostov and Belgorod oblasts each, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed.

An unspecified infrastructure facility was also damaged on the evening of March 12 in Voronezh Oblast, a region bordering Ukraine's Luhansk Oblast, Governor Alexander Gusev said on his Telegram channel.

The targeted facility was part of the region's gas infrastructure, the Baza Telegram channel reported, citing residents.

The Kyiv Independent could not verify the claims. Airports in Penza, Saratov, and Volgograd imposed temporary flight restrictions overnight, Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency announced.

Four journalists covering the Kawempe North, Uganda, by-election were reportedly assaulted, arrested, and transported in a drone vehicle by security operatives.

The journalists, identified as Isano Francis of NBS TV, Raymond Tamale of NTV, Dennis Kabugo, and Abubaker Lubowa of Daily Monitor, were detained while working in the area.

Three other journalists David Ijjo of NTV, Hassan Wasswa of NBS TV, and Hakim Wampamba of NBS TV managed to escape the ordeal.

Eyewitness reports indicate that security forces targeted the journalists while they were covering various polling stations.

Though the full details of the assault remain unclear, sources suggest that the journalists were subjected to physical abuse before being forcibly taken away by security operatives in a drone vehicle a mode of transport that has raised widespread concern.

Canary Mugume, senior reporter for NBS TV, expressed deep concern over the escalating security presence, describing it as highly suspicious.

"UPDF soldiers carrying guns are patrolling the streets in both official vehicles and drones with their number plates removed," Mugume said.

He noted the specific targeting of journalists.

"These actions seem to be directed at journalists. We wonder if this is an election or a different operation," he added.

According to Mugume, their equipment was seized at several polling stations, forcing the team to flee with only one camera, which was used to broadcast the feed.

The increased presence of armed UPDF soldiers and the use of unmarked drones have created an atmosphere of intimidation, particularly for media personnel.

The station expressed alarm over the situation, citing previous attacks on other journalists, including Mugume and Wasswa. They have called on authorities to prioritise the safety of the press.

Ukraine Tests Drone-Carrying Balloons to Intercept Russian Shahed Drones

Ukrainian engineers are developing a new aerial complex designed to intercept Russian Shahed drones, which are launched almost every night in swarms to target Ukrainian infrastructure.

The system involves using balloons as airborne platforms to carry FPV (first-person view) interceptor drones, according to a report by Frontliner media.

The concept, developed by Ukrainian tech group Aerobavovna and its partners, centers around lifting FPV drones into the sky using a tethered balloon.

Once an enemy drone is detected by a thermal imaging camera attached to the balloon, the interceptor drone is released and guided by an operator to strike the target mid-air.

While the technical specs of the system remain classified, the developers say the goal is to create a simple but effective solution to intercept drones like the Iranian-made Shahed-136, which Russia has been using extensively since its full-scale invasion began.

Balloons: More Than Just Surveillance

This is not the first time Ukraine has turned to balloons for military innovation.

For over a year, units within the Ukrainian Defense Forces have been using balloons as communication relays and aerial monitoring platforms, especially in regions where ground-based systems are vulnerable or ineffective.

“We’ve been working for two years to make sure these balloons can fly in all weather,” said one of the system’s developers. “Now we’re testing them in the most challenging conditions.”

The current prototype balloon can reach altitudes of around 800 meters, carry up to 10 kilograms of equipment, and operate regardless of weather.

Its applications range from communication relays and surveillance to electronic warfare and now, drone interception.

A Flexible Tool in Ukraine’s Asymmetric Arsenal

The balloon system is being positioned as a low-cost, high-impact tool to help defend Ukraine against the daily drone threat, which is often difficult to counter using conventional air defense systems due to the drones' low altitude and unpredictable flight paths.

Last year, Ukrainian defense company Kvertus revealed that it had developed an airborne version of its Azimuth electronic intelligence system, mounted on Aerobavovna’s balloons to detect and track enemy drone signals.

As Ukraine continues to adapt to Russia’s evolving drone tactics, these airborne platforms are expected to play a growing role on the battlefield.

Developers believe that combining persistent aerial surveillance with the ability to launch interceptors directly from the sky will give Ukrainian forces a better chance at neutralizing drone attacks before they reach their targets.

Stefanie has been pivotal to JVP’s path to becoming a truly national and highly influential force in our movement, while remaining committed to our grassroots foundation. An organizer’s organizer, she has led, co-led, or been a key team member towards so many milestones: our growth from 7 to 70 chapters, our National Member Meetings, our evolving organizing strategies, our campaigns including Deadly Exchange, our political evolutions including embrace of the full BDS call, our work towards a greater commitment to anti-racism, and the recent launch of JVP Action, our 501c4. Stefanie’s leadership is rooted in her centering of relationships, in rigorous self-reflection, and in a high bar of accountability for herself and for JVP. The Transition Task Force, consisting of four board members, and Ari Belathar and Rabbi Alissa Wise from staff, conducted a wide-ranging and rigorous search process. We knew Rebecca Vilkomerson would be a tough act to follow, especially in an organization as unique as JVP. We began nine months ago with reflection and assessment of JVP in this political moment, and what that would require of our next ED. We consulted with allies and movement partners, and engaged JVP’s staff to participate and provide feedback during multiple stages of this process. The board was unanimous in its decision to offer the role to Stefanie.

Stefanie’s first day as Executive Director will be April 6, after a much-needed break during the month of March.

Finally: the Board wishes to honor and thank both Stefanie and Rabbi Alissa Wise for their extraordinary tenure as Co-Executive Directors subsequent to Rebecca Vilkomerson’s departure last September, as well as the entire JVP staff for their undaunted commitment to our organization and our movement. While drones are often associated with military applications, their potential to enhance civilian supply chains is undeniable, especially for critical, time-sensitive deliveries.

The global civilian drone market, valued at around $24.98 billion in 2023, is projected to reach $65.49 billion by 2030.

India's civilian drone market, worth approximately $1.2 billion in 2023, is expected to grow to $4.87 billion by 2030.

SAN JOSE, Calif. - A South Bay man was arrested this week on charges of allegedly sex-trafficking a minor who was previously reported missing, officials say.

Ibrahim Abdul-Alim Bin Hajj Yahya Abdul-Malik, 37, of San Jose was arrested in California on Monday, according to the U.S. Attorney's office District of Massachusetts.

Business records show Malik owns Ibrahim's Halal Chicken and Waffles in downtown San Jose.

The victim, a girl, was reported missing from her Ohio home in August 2024.

Federal officials said law enforcement became aware that a 17-year-old victim was being advertised for commercial sex acts online on Dec. 11. On that day, law enforcement carried out an undercover operation where they responded to the advertisements that included photos of the minor and a phone number to arrange sexual encounters.

A meeting for sex-for-pay was arranged at a hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Law enforcement officials confiscated the minor's phone as evidence. Investigators said that Malik advertised the victim as a 20-year-old to avoid being a red flag for authorities.

Investigators said Malik had been advertising the victim online for commercial sex acts in more than one state starting in Nov. 2024.

Evidence from the victim's phone connected Malik to the child-sex-trafficking crimes.

It is alleged he would collect payment from the victim through a Zelle account he controlled and kept the profits for himself.

Following the undercover operation, authorities said Malik fled Massachusetts on a flight from Boston to San Jose on Dec. 12, 2024.

"The charge of sex trafficking of children carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and up to life in prison, at least five years and up to a lifetime of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000," federal prosecutors said in a news release.

Italy to boycott UK-France-led meeting on Ukraine – media

PM Giorgia Meloni reportedly believes that London and Paris are “rushing ahead” to promote deploying troops to the country

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will no take part in an upcoming video conference proposed by UK and France, in which a so-called “coalition of the willing” intends to increase military support for Ukraine, La Repubblica and La Stampa newspapers have reported.

In its article on Tuesday, La Repubblica said that “it is certain” that Meloni will boycott the virtual meeting of the Western European leaders being convened by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday.

The ItalianPM reportedly “distances herself from the Franco-British axis” due to her disagreementwith the push by London and Paris to send peacekeepers to aid Kiev. Meloni believes that Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are “rushing ahead” with their idea, according to La Repubblica.

The move by Rome could “split the front that Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron are trying to build,” La Stampa noted.

The media outlet claimed that the Italian authorities had decided to drop out of the video conferenceafter extensive discussions with other governments, including the administration of US President Donald Trump.

Starmer announced that the UK and France are ready to lead a “coalition of the willing” to support Ukraine with troops and aircraft during an emergency summit in London in early March. This came shortly after Donald Trump and Vladimir Zelensky had a public disagreement at the White House, where Trump accused the Ukrainian leader of opposing peace with Russia and being ungrateful for US assistance.

Shortly after the summit, Meloni stressed that “Italy will not be sending troops to Ukraine.” She suggested that European politicians should instead focus on developing conditions for a just and lasting peace between Moscow and Kiev, including security guarantees for Ukraine.

Earlier this week, the Italian PM expressed “satisfaction” with the outcome of the talks between the US and Ukraine in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which ended with Kiev agreeing to an “immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire.” She said that Rome “fully supports” Trump’s peace efforts and that “the decision is now up to Russia.”

Moscow has said repeatedly that it would not accept a temporary ceasefire with Kiev, insisting that the conflict must be settled through reliable, legally binding agreements that would eliminate its root causes. FEMA Launches Probe Of NGOs Who Helped Traffic Illegal Migrants

The Trump administration has launched a review of organizations that provide temporary housing and other aid to migrants, suggesting they may have violated a law prohibiting human trafficking.

The Department of Homeland Security has “significant concerns” that federal grants used to address a surge of migration under former President Joe Biden were used for illegal activities, wrote Cameron Hamilton, acting administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

His letter, dated Tuesday and obtained by The Associated Press, asks recipients of grants from FEMA’s Shelter and Services Program to provide names and contact information for migrants served and “a detailed and descriptive list of specific services provided” within 30 days. The letter says funding will be withheld during the review.

While it doesn’t explicitly threaten criminal prosecution, it raises concerns that recipients may have violated U.S. Criminal Code Section 1324, a felony offense against bringing people across the border illegally or transporting them within the United States. It also says executive officers must sign sworn statements that they have no knowledge or suspicions of anyone in their organizations violating the smuggling law.

FEMA did not immediately respond to a request for comment late Wednesday.

Hamilton’s letter suggests that the U.S. government is taking action to address a scandal that the House GOP has been chasing for years.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed support for a potential 30-day ceasefire in the Ukraine conflictbut has raised concerns regarding how such a truce be implemented. Speaking on Thursday, Putin warned of potential loopholes and strategic disadvantages.
