A 74-year-old woman has become the first person to be arrested and charged under a Scottish law banning protests outside abortion clinics.

She was arrested close to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow and was charged in connection with breach of an exclusion zone.

Officers removed a sign from the area - which had been held by the woman who was arrested - that read "coercion is a crime, here to talk, only if you want".

The Abortion Services (Safe Access Zones) Act came into force last year.

The woman was arrested near the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow

The legislation prevents any protests or vigils taking place within 200m (656ft) of 30 clinics offering abortion services in Scotland.

US Vice-President JD Vance took aim at the bill last week, incorrectly claiming people who live within safe access zones had been sent letters by the Scottish government warning them about praying within their homes.

First Minister John Swinney said Vance's claims were "just wrong".

The Scottish government said no letters had been sent out saying people couldn't pray in their homes, and only "intentional or reckless behaviour" was covered by the act.

The vice-president was accused of "spreading misinformation" by Scottish Greens MSP Gillian Mackay, who drew up the law.

Police Scotland said it received a report of people protesting near the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital at about 14:00.

The force said officers remained at the scene and that inquiries were ongoing.

Additionally, Macron has domestic political issues he is hopeful to draw attention away from; meanwhile British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is similarly alarmed as the U.K has taken up the prominent position of military support for Ukraine. Together, they are both planning quick trips to the White House for talks with President Trump.

WASHINGTON DC – French President Emmanuel Macron is coming to Washington next week, national security adviser Mike Waltz said on Wednesday.

Macron called for an emergency “informal” meeting with world leaders just days ago in Paris to discuss European security and the challenges posed by President Donald Trump’s administration. Trump and Macron had a “friendly” but brief conversation just prior to the summit, POLITICO reported on Monday.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is also set to visit next week, Waltz said on Fox News. Starmer’s office confirmed the visit earlier this week.

Germany, France, Great Britain and the larger EU assembly cannot and will not cover the bills for Ukraine themselves. This is a major issue for them and one of the primary reasons they will not put their military forces into the lead position on behalf of Zelenskyy. Meanwhile, Vice President J.D. Vance on Wednesday warned the Ukrainian president against attacking President Donald Trump, saying that ‘badmouthing’ him in public would only backfire.

Vance spoke to DailyMail.com hours after Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky accused Trump of living in a Russian-made ‘disinformation space.’

On Tuesday, without a hearing to review the allegations, Hinds County Chancery Court Judge Crystal Wise Martin ordered the newspaper to “remove” the column from its website.

In her order, the judge noted that the case involves allegations of “defamation against public figures through actual malice in reckless disregard of the truth and interferes with their legitimate function to advocate for legislation they believe would help their municipality during this current legislative cycle.”
