The group spent much of the first Trump administration challenging policies like Republican attempts to roll back the health care law and impose new restrictions on immigration. During the Biden administration, it provided legal support for Democratic efforts to protect emergency abortion care, uphold the ability of Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug pricing and regulate e-cigarettes.

The coalition has built a multimillion-dollar war chest for its new focus. Its partners include a broad swath of organizations, including unions, immigration advocacy organizations and groups working on abortion rights, civil rights and consumer protection. The group’s legal efforts will be paired with a website designed to showcase its work for the public and to encourage more lawyers, experts and civilians to join its cases.

“This is still a huge uphill battle and it’s going to take everybody doing their part,” Ms. Perryman said. “It’s not just lawyers. It’s going to take institutions willing to stand up against extremism.”

The Missoula Campaign

Before such technology can be sent out to a fire, it needs to be tested. That’s what the FireSense team did this summer.

McSwain described the conditions in Missoula as an “alignment of stars” for the research: the complex mountain terrain produces erratic, historically unpredictable winds, and the sparsity of monitoring instruments on the ground makes weather forecasting very difficult.

During the three-day campaign, several fires burned nearby, which allowed researchers to test how the drones performed in smokey conditions.

A drone team out of NASA Langley conducted eight data-collection flights in Missoula. Before each drone flight, student teams from the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, and Salish Kootenai College in Pablo, Montana, launched a weather balloon carrying the same type of radiometer.

Once those data sets were created, they needed to be transformed into a usable format. Meteorologists are used to the numbers, but incident commanders on an active fire need to see the data in a form that allows them to quickly understand which conditions are changing, and how. That’s where data visualization partners come in. For the Missoula campaign, teams from MITRE, NVIDIA, and Esri joined NASA in the field.

Measurements from both the balloon and the drone platforms were immediately sent to the on-site data teams.

The MITRE team, together with NVIDIA, tested high-resolution artificial intelligence meteorological models, while the Esri team created comprehensive visualizations of flight paths, temperatures, and wind speed and direction.

These visual representations of the data make conclusions more immediately apparent to non-meteorologists.

What’s Next?

Development of drone capabilities for fire monitoring didn’t begin in Missoula, and it won’t end there.

“This campaign leveraged almost a decade of research, development, engineering, and testing,” said McSwain. “We have built up a UAS flight capability that can now be used across NASA.”

The NASA Alta X and its sensor payload will head to Alabama and Florida in spring 2025, incorporating improvements identified in Montana.

There, the team will perform another technology demonstration with wildland fire managers from a different region.

President Donald Trump has announced that “high-level” US representatives will meet their Russian counterparts at the Munich Security Conference on Friday to discuss a resolution to the Ukraine conflict.

President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart spoke for nearly 90 minutes by phone on Wednesday, marking the first known direct interaction between the Russian and US heads of state since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. On Thursday, Trump said the phone call had paved the way for further direct contacts between American and Russian officials.

“They’re having a meeting in Munich tomorrow. Russia is going to be there with our people,” Trump told journalists at the White House on Thursday.

Trump added that “Ukraine is also invited, by the way,” but did not specify the format of the meeting or clarify whether it would be a three-way dialogue or a series of bilateral talks.

“Not sure exactly who’s going to be there from any country, but high-level people from Russia, from Ukraine, and from the United States,” the US leader added.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier on Thursday that the fact that both presidents had expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue was a “very important achievement” that has “set in motion an apparatus of aides, ministries and so on, that will now gradually begin dialogue and prepare the next contacts.”

“Now that the leaders have demonstrated political will and provided their aides with the necessary instructions to initiate communication, we ask for a bit of patience. These discussions need time to gain momentum,” Peskov said.

The Munich Security Conference is taking place from February 14 to 16 in Munich, Germany. US Vice President J.D. Vance will lead the American delegation, and is expected to meet with Vladimir Zelensky. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the conference is an opportunity for American officials to “lay out a broad path forward” on Ukraine.

Meanwhile, US presidential envoy Keith Kellogg is reportedly expected to make it clear that the US has no intention of deploying troops to protect Ukraine and wants Washington’s European NATO allies to increase their defense spending.

Russian officials have not attended the Munich Conference since 2022, and Moscow has yet to confirm its participation this year or announce the composition of its delegation.

Mass layoffs at multiple U.S. government agencies have begun as President Donald Trump and Department of Government Efficiency chief Elon Musk accelerate their purge of America's federal bureaucracy, union sources and employees familiar with the layoffs told Reuters on Thursday.

Termination emails have been sent in the past 48 hours to scores of government workers, mostly recently hired employees still on probation, at the Education Department, the Small Business Administration (SBA), the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), the Office of Personnel Management, and the General Services Administration (GSA), which manages many federal buildings.

Further, the Department of Energy is set to lay off most or all of its estimated 2,000 probationary employees Thursday, Politico reported.

It was not immediately clear on Thursday how many federal workers stood to lose their jobs in the first wave of firings. But the move fulfills Trump's vow to reduce the size of the federal government and root out the "deep state," a reference to bureaucrats he views as not sufficiently loyal to him.

"The Agency finds that you are not fit for continued employment because your ability, knowledge and skills do not fit the current needs, and your performance has not been adequate to justify further employment with the Agency," letters sent to at least 45 probationers at the SBA stated.

Letters to at least 160 recent hires at the Education Department, also seen by Reuters, told them that their continued employment "would not be in the public interest."

According to government data, about 280,000 civilian government workers were hired less than two years ago, with most still on probation.

US President Donald Trump and his administration will work to end the promotion of diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) programs across the world, Elon Musk announced at the World Governments Summit in Dubai on Thursday.

The billionaire’s statement comes as Trump has launched a campaign aimed at ending DEI initiatives within the federal government since assuming office last month. Shortly after being sworn in, Trump repealed some 78 orders signed by his predecessor Joe Biden. This includes terminating DEI programs and ending protections for transgender individuals. Trump also set a 60-day deadline for federal agencies to cease all DEI-related practices.

Speaking via video link at the Dubai forum, Musk, who currently heads Trump’s newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), acknowledged that there has been “a lot of pushing of DEI worldwide” by the US and stressed that the new administration “doesn’t agree” with this approach.

“We want to terminate that stuff, and we are,” Musk said.

He warned that if DEI principles were allowed to continue and be used to implement “crazy things that are untruthful” and “don’t reflect reality” into things like artificial intelligence, it could easily lead to a “very dystopian outcome.”

Earlier this month, the billionaire claimed that DOGE had already saved the US over $1 billion by scrapping over 100 contracts related to DEI programs. Musk also reported that his department has managed to cut federal spending by $1 billion per day by effectively halting “the hiring of people into unnecessary positions, the deletion of DEI, and stopping improper payments to foreign organizations.”

Trump has also ordered the dismantling of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which was Washington’s primary vehicle for funding political projects abroad. Ross Morton, Gulfstream Park’s announcer for 23 years and Finger Lakes’ announcer throughout its 46-year history, died the night of Feb. 20 in Hollywood after suffering a massive stroke. He was 74.

In a recent interview, Morton said his most memorable calls included Holy Bull and Spectacular Bid's victories in the Florida Derby (gr. I) in 1994 and 1979, respectively; Forego’s Gulfstream Park Handicap (gr. II) in 1974; Seattle Slew’s Flamingo Stakes (gr. I) in 1977; and John Henry’s Hialeah Turf Cup Handicap (gr. IIT) in 1980.

Morton, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., was a Syracuse disc jockey when he applied for the track announcer spot at Finger Lakes. Except for the period he spent recovering from bypass surgery in 2005, he was the only announcer the track knew since it first opened in May, 1962. Morton parlayed that position into duties at both Gulfstream Park and Hialeah.

Referred to by many as “The Voice,” his deep, rich voice and precise diction made him a fan favorite and one of the most well-known track announcers in the United States.
