Senate Democrats offered a resolution Monday to condemn President Donald Trump’s decision to pardon Jan. 6 defendants who assaulted Capitol Police officers, saying the move invites future political violence.

All Democrats and independents who caucus with them signed onto the resolution. Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) was not on an initial version of the resolution circularted Monday morning, but a spokesperson confirmed later he supports the effort.

The one-line resolution indicates that “the Senate disapproves of any pardons for individuals who were found guilty of assaulting Capitol Police officers.”

Though many Trump allies anticipated that he would not pardon or commute sentences for people convicted of assaulting police on Jan. 6, Trump pardoned or ordered the dismissal of charges for all 1,600 defendants. Among them: defendants who beat police with poles and bats, used tasers and bear spray on officers and hurled objects like fire extinguishers and table legs into police lines.

A Mexican TV report alleged drug cartels and other criminal organisations were illegally buying rocket launchers sent to Ukraine by the West. But is it true?

A video clip taken from a news segment in Mexico has been widely shared on social media alleging to show a cartel member carrying a weapon destined for Ukraine.

“In the state of Tamaulipas, an alleged member of the Gulf Cartel was recorded carrying one of the most exclusive and powerful weapons, a 'javelin', which has been used during the invasion of Ukraine with a value of between $20,000 and $60,000,” says the anchor in the clip which has received millions of views as of July.

This led to hundreds of Twitter users claiming weapons sent by the West have been sold on the black market to Mexican cartels and other criminal organisations around the world.

"It turns out that the US military weapons that we sent to *Ukraine*, including Javelin anti-tank missiles and missile launchers, are ending up in the hands of Mexican drug cartels south of our border. This is an embarrassment," tweeted Vivek Ramaswamy, a candidate in the US 2024 Republican Party presidential primaries.

The Cube took a closer look at this video and found there are multiple misleading elements in these claims.

What did the Mexican news report say?

Since the start of Russia's invasion, NATO countries and the US have supplied billions of euros worth of weapons to support Ukraine.

But concerns have been raised about whether these weapons could end up in the wrong hands.

These fears have bolstered the Kremlin's disinformation narrative against providing arms to Kyiv.

However, the Mexican TV segment has actually been mistranslated and the anchor only mentions Ukraine once during the report and never says the weapon seen in the video was smuggled from there.

What type of weapon is the alleged cartel member carrying?

Euronews reached out to Raytheon Technologies, the company that manufactures the Javelin and they said via a written statement: "The video does not show a Javelin, which is a different size and shape."

According to arms experts, the weapon in the video is an AT4 rocket launcher manufactured in Sweden.

It is much smaller than the Javelin and less expensive – approximately 1,500 euros compared to 175,000 euros for a Javelin.

The AT4 is widely used by Latin American militaries, including Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and Colombia and is "especially prized on the black market," according to a Small Arms Survey report.

Both the US and Sweden have confirmed they sent AT4s to Ukraine since the start of the war. However, there is no evidence the weapon seen in the clip comes from a cache destined for Kyiv.

Could a rocket launcher from Ukraine end up in the hands of a drug cartel?

Is there a possibility that weapons meant for Ukraine are being illegally sold to criminal organisations? According to multiple illegal arms trade experts, it is highly unlikely.

"It doesn't make sense from a perspective of how those markets are run in Mexico," explained Falko Ernst, a Senior Analyst for Mexico at the International Crisis Group.

"From a logistical point of view, it really doesn't make sense to ship them over to Ukraine. It would increase logistical costs, and drive up the price. Even in terms of strategic necessity, these groups rely on small firearms to do their fighting. There aren't any incentives to do that from the perspective of traffickers and Mexican criminal groups," he told Euronews.

Moreover, there hasn't been any credible evidence of the trafficking of arms out of Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, according to Nils Duquet, the director of the Flemish Peace Institute.

"Of course, this is an armed conflict and weapons do disappear… But we know that arms trafficking is generally a regional phenomenon. So if there is trafficking outside of Ukraine, it would actually pop up first in neighbouring countries," Duquet told Euronews

A United States senator and a Danish lawmaker on Monday issued a joint statement hitting out at U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to acquire Greenland.

Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski, who represents Alaska, and Danish MP Aaja Chemnitz, who holds one of two seats in Denmark’s parliament representing Greenland, said the Arctic island is “open for business, but not for sale.”

Murkowski, who has criticized Trump on multiple occasions and voted to convict him on impeachment charges after the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol attack and who last week voted against one of his key Cabinet appointments, is vice chair of the standing committee of the Arctic Parliamentarians forum, while Chemnitz chairs the committee.

“Of course a businessman turned president would be interested. But Greenland is not for sale,” Murkowski and Chemnitz said in a statement obtained by POLITICO.

“As legislators representing Greenland in Denmark and the United States, we see a better path forward. The United States, like Denmark, should recognize that the future will be defined by partnership, not ownership,” they added.

Trump has insisted that the U.S. should take ownership of Greenland — a Danish territory since 1953 and a colony before that — and refused to rule out using military force or economic coercion to seize it.

“Greenland is a wonderful place. We need it for international security. And I’m sure that Denmark will come along — it’s costing them a lot of money to maintain it, to keep it,” the Republican leader told reporters last week on his first day in the Oval Office.

His comments triggered crisis meetings in Copenhagen and a sharp rebuke from Danish and Greenlandic leaders, who have repeatedly said the island is not up for grabs — including in a reportedly fiery 45-minute phone call between Trump and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen earlier this month.

Murkowski and Chemnitz welcomed “increased cooperation” between Greenland and the U.S. “on defense, mineral development, trade, and our common values of freedom and democracy.”

But Greenland is “an ally, not an asset,” they cautioned.

“We are certain that U.S. ambitions for national security can be achieved without altering Greenland’s autonomy … The future does not require us to redraw the borders on that map, but to work harder than ever across them,” Murkowski and Chemnitz said.

The pardons, announced Friday, mean the criminal record of the crimes is now purged. They come a few months after the Democratic president pardoned thousands of people convicted of “simple possession” of marijuana under federal law. He also pardoned three people earlier this year and has commuted the sentences of 75 others.

Biden’s stance on low-level crimes, particularly low-level drug possession, and how those crimes can impact families and communities for decades to come has evolved over his 50 years in public service. Biden has said people are right to question his stance on the bill, but he also has encouraged them to look at what he’s doing now on crime.

Ukraine’s top spy believes country could cease to exist – media

Kiev must start peace talks before summer or its very survival will be at stake, Kirill Budanov has reportedly warned

Ukraine could collapse by the summer if it does not agree to peace talks with Russia, the country’s top intelligence official has told lawmakers in Kiev, according to a report on Monday by local outlet Strana.ua.

According to the website’s sources, Kirill Budanov, the chief of the Main Directorate of Intelligence, made his remarks during a closed-door meeting in the Ukrainian parliament. One of the people present at the conference told the outlet that there were sensitive briefings by top military officials, including officers of the General Staff.

However, the source singled out Budanov’s account. “Someone asked him: ‘How much time do we have left?’ He responded, with his signature cold smile: ‘If there are no serious negotiations by summer, very dangerous processes could begin for the very existence of Ukraine.’”

Budanov’s reported warning comes as Kiev’s forces have been pushed back across the front line by Russian troops. Ukrainian officials and commanders have also complained of manpower shortages amid a troubled mobilization campaign, with recruitment officers often facing open resistance from reluctant draftees.

Earlier this week, Strana reported that top Ukrainian officials were reviewing a plan by US President Donald Trump’s team to end the conflict within 100 days. While the roadmap has not been confirmed, its key points reportedly include direct talks between the US president and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to pave the way for a ceasefire along the front lines by April 20 and a peace agreement by early May.

According to the roadmap, it is believed that Ukraine would agree to abandon its NATO membership ambitions, stop cracking down on political forces advocating cooperation with Russia, and become a member of the EU by 2030. Kiev would also reportedly refrain from attempts to reclaim its former territories from Moscow without formally recognizing Russian sovereignty, with the West pledging to partially lift sanctions immediately after the peace deal.

While Ukrainian officials have dismissed the roadmap as a hoax, the Kremlin has not commented on the report. However, Moscow has repeatedly said it is open to talks over Ukraine, signaling readiness for a Trump-Putin summit.
