Jean Chretien has said Ottawa should “play offense” and join forces with other states to counter the US president-elect

Jean Chretien, who served as Canada’s prime minister from 1993 to 2003, has lashed out at US President-elect Donald Trump over his suggestion of annexing the neighboring country.

In an article published by the Globe and Mail on Sunday,Chretien, who turned 91 that day, addressed Trump directly: “From one old guy to another: Give your head a shake! What could make you think that Canadians would ever give up the best country in the world… to join the United States?”(Canada may have great land, but it certainly is not the best country in the world, if you ask the people)

The former prime minister described the incoming US leader’s talk of absorbing Canada as “totally unacceptable insults and unprecedented threats to our very sovereignty.”

“We may look easy-going. Mild-mannered. But make no mistake, we have spine and toughness,” the veteran politician stressed. He urged Canadian officials of all levels to start showing leadership.

Chretien said it’s not enough for Canada’s major parties to merely voice their opposition to Trump’s takeover suggestion, and that Ottawa should start playing offense, as the only way to “break this cycle” of Trump’s “blackmail.”

The former prime minister suggested that Canada should confront the US over the flow of illegal firearms pouring in from across the borderas well as Washington’s reluctance to recognize the Northwest Passage as Canadian territorial waters.

In addition, Ottawa needs to join forces with Panama, Mexico, Denmark and the European Union, which have also been targeted by Trump’s territorial or trade-related demands of late, Chretien wrote.

Since his triumph in the November 5 presidential election, Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of taking over Canada, while threatening to slap a 25% tariff on goods crossing the border, to offset what he deems unfair trade surpluses.

In a post on his Truth Social platform last Tuesday, the US president-elect posted a map depicting the US and Canada as a single country and the words ‘United States’ slapped onto the whole entity. That same day, Trump told reporters that Washington could use “economic force” to absorb its northern neighbor.

Commenting on the Republican’s remarks in a post on X, outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote: “There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States.”(Uh oh, that’s a challenge to Trump, what does Trump love the most? A challenge.)

Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the opposition Conservative Party, similarly pushed back against Trump’s suggestions, insisting that “Canada will never be the 51st state. Period. We are a great and independent country.”

‘Let’s buy good, cheap gas from our friends in Russia’ – UK politician

David Kurten has called for reactivating the only undamaged Nord Stream gas pipeline amid low reserves and low temperatures

British Eurosceptic politician David Kurten has called for a partial relaunch of the Nord Stream pipeline system – which previously pumped Russian natural gas to the EU – amid freezing weather and supply fears.

In a statement on X on Sunday, the politician, who leads the Heritage Party, advocated purchasing gas from Russia to address a potential energy shortage.

“One of the four Nord Stream pipelines is undamaged and could be turned on again very quickly. Let's buy good, cheap gas from our friends in Russia once again,” Kurten wrote.

British gas supplier Centrica warned last week that “plunging temperatures… have reduced UK winter gas storage to concerningly low levels.”

“Stubbornly high” gas prices have made it “more difficult to top up storage,” the company added. The network operator National Gas has since downplayed the concerns, stating that the storage level “remains healthy.”

The Nord Stream 1 & 2 pipeline system, operated by Russia’s Gazprom, was designed to pump gas under the Baltic Sea directly to Germany. The first line was launched in 2011 and became a key energy source for the EU.

Nord Stream 2, completed in 2021, was intended to double the system’s capacity, but never went online due to certification issues in Germany – which were exacerbated by the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict the following year.

Both Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 were ruptured in September 2022 in what EU officials described as an act of sabotage. Explosions rendered three of the four conduits inoperable.

Russia has repeatedly called for an impartial international investigation, while criticizing the transparency of European-led probes. Moscow has suggested that the United States may have been behind the explosions, in an attempt to reduce Russia’s energy leverage.

The Nord Stream shut-down hassent energy prices soaring in Germany, which previously bought over 50% of its natural gas from Russia, and forced it to buy more expensive LNG from other suppliers, including the US.

In 2023, the EU’s largest economy entered a recession, according to official statistics. Other countries, including Austria, Italy, Hungary, and Slovakia, have also experienced disruptions, which have beenfurther exacerbated by the suspension of Russian gas transit via Ukraine, after Kiev refused to extend a transit deal beyond 2024.

German opposition politician and candidate for chancellor Alice Weidel pledged last week to put Nord Stream back into operation if her party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), wins next month’s general election.

The UK, unlike many European nations, historically imported only a small percentage of its gas from Russia. Before 2022, Russian imports accounted for less than 4% of the UK’s total supply, trailing behind domestic production in the North Sea, and imports from Norway, Qatar, and the United States.

The Heritage Party was founded by Kurten in 2020. It claims to defend traditional family values and national sovereignty, while seeking to scale back UK ties with the European Union. In the UK's general election last July, it contested several constituencies but did not secure any seats in parliament.

From 2021 to 2023, Kash Patel made content for The Epoch Times, a news organization known for its far-right conspiracy theories, its association with a Chinese dissident religious group, and, since June, a sprawling multimillion-dollar money laundering scheme allegedly perpetrated by one of its top executives.

NBC News reviewed 79 episodes totaling over 45 hours of content featuring Patel and his co-host, Epoch Times senior editor Jan Jekielek, neither of whom is accused in the federal case. Together, they spun detailed but unfounded claims of conspiracies involving government officials, law enforcement agencies, the media and tech companies, among others, all aiming to rig elections, silence conservative voices and undermine Trump’s presidency and re-election.

Billed as a show where the former deputy director of national intelligence would “break down the biggest issues of our day, from the origins of Covid-19 to the politicization of the intelligence community,” “Kash’s Corner” offered commentary on the news, often with a conspiratorial flourish.

The show, available only to Epoch Times subscribers, could receive fresh scrutiny as Patel faces Senate confirmation hearings. His lack of experience, his promotion of politically motivated conspiracy theories in a book vilifying the FBI, and his public remarks promising to “come after” judges, lawyers and the media involved in Trump’s many legal investigations are also likely subjects.

It wasn’t just his namesake show. Patel was a constant contributor across Epoch Times properties, appearing on other shows, on the sister television network NTDTV, and in the outlet’s Jan. 6 documentary. The last “Kash’s Corner” dropped in August 2023 with an announcement that Patel would be appearing on other shows and that the “Corner” would be back after the election.

The details of Patel’s contract with The Epoch Times aren’t known. (Financial disclosure forms filed by talk radio and Epoch Times host Larry Elder during a failed presidential run showed the company paid between $1 million and $5 million for a similar show.) A representative for Patel declined to comment.

Ukraine won’t get German-style reunification – Medvedev

The scenario being floated ahead of Trump’s inauguration is designed to appease ‘neo-Nazis’, the ex-Russian president has said

Suggestions that Ukraine could get a security deal similar to West Germany after World War II are betting on the dissolution of Russia, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has claimed.

West Germany joined NATO in 1955, while East Germany remained part of the Soviet bloc until reunification in 1990.

Moscow did not oppose the move, as the US and its allies had assured the USSR’s leaders that Western troops would not go beyond Germany’s eastern border. NATO’s breach of that promise is the primary cause of the current animosity between Russia and the West, according to Russian officials.

Some Western news outlets have reported that theso-called “German model”could see Ukraine granted membership of NATO, with mutual defence guarantees applying only to territory under Kiev’s actual control. A Western source quoted by the Financial Times last October described the idea as the “only game in town,” but critics have warned that formal NATO accession may lead to further escalation between Russia and the US-led military bloc.

Medvedev, who serves as deputy chair of the Russian Security Council, commented on the “German scenario” on Monday, dismissing the notion that Kiev could ever seize control of its former regions.

“Who would honestly consider a scenario, in which a nuclear power relinquishes something to the ugly dwarf named Ukraine?”he wrote in a Telegram post. “It means they can only count on Russia’s dissolution.” (I can’t stop laughing)

Attempts to draw parallels between the Ukraine conflict and post-WWII Germany are nothing more than Kiev trying to placate “rabid neo-Nazis.” It is more likely that ethnic Russian people living in Ukraine would seek reunification with Russia, he added.

People in five former Ukrainian regions voted in referendums to break away from Kiev and join Russia following the Western-backed armed coup in Kiev in 2014. Ukraine and its backers have denied the legitimacy of those polls.

Kiev is seeking to reclaim full control over lands it still claims using military force and diplomatic pressure. Moscow has described the hostilities as a Western proxy war against Russia, with Ukrainian soldiers serving as “cannon fodder.”

UK PM ‘sent operatives’ to undermine US elections – Musk

It is no surprise Keir Starmer was not invited to Donald Trump’s inauguration, according to the tech billionaire

SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has accused British Prime Minister Keir Starmer of meddling in American elections.

The tech billionaire has been tapped by US President-elect Donald Trump to head DOGE, a special advisory body tasked with identifying government inefficiency.

On Sunday, Musk commented on an X user’s post that Starmer has not been invited to Trump’s January 20 inauguration, despite the UK being among the closest allies of the US.

The tech billionaire made it clear that the UK prime minister’s absence from the ceremony’s guest list isno surprise, given that “he sent operatives to America to undermine the US elections.”

Musk’s claim apparently stems from the accusations of “blatant foreign interference” made by Trump’s campaign against Starmer’s Labour Party in October.

At the time, the US president-elect’s team filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission(FEC) over reports of the British activists campaigningin the US for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

Musk has been increasingly critical of Starmer on his X platform in recent weeks, saying that he runs a “tyrannical government,” from which the US might need to “liberate the people” in the UK.

Among other things, he branded the British prime minister “evil” and accused him of being “complicit in the rape of Britain” over Starmer’s purported role in the cover up of the grooming gangs scandal while head of the Crown Prosecution Service from 2008 to 2013.

Those gangs, mostly made up of Pakistani males, targeted white British girls for some two decades. The UK authorities failed to act against them due to political correctness concerns, multiple government and media reports have alleged.

Last week, Starmer hit back at Musk, calling his claims “lies and misinformation” and blaming the tech billionaire for spreading the “poison of the far-right.”

On Thursday, the Financial Times reported that Musk is allegedly considering a campaign to force the British prime minister out of officeby undermining his approval ratings. The outlet’s sources claimed that the SpaceX and Tesla CEO had privately discussed such plans with his allies, acting out of the belief “that Western civilization itself is threatened.”

Almost 50% of Federal Govt Bureaucrats Say They’ll ‘Resist’ Trump Admin.

Almost half of career federal government bureaucrats say they plan to resist directives from President-elect Donald J. Trump‘s incoming administration. The scale of planned interference by unelected federal government employees against the actions of a duly elected President underscores the urgent need for reforms like the Schedule F employment designation and the swift confirmation of Trump’s cabinet nominees.

Polling conducted by RMG Research found that42 percent of federal government workers intend to actively undermine President-elect Trump’s agenda. Overall, the data found that the political elite—who overwhelmingly backed Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election—have the most faith in the federal government and tend to support bureaucratic resistance to Trump.

RMG Research defines thepolitical elite as individuals who earn over $150,000 a year, live in major metropolitan areas, and have advanced degrees.

Among government workers, support for the Trump administration primarily reflects the individual’s partisan preferences. A concerning 73 percent of those who identify as Democrats say they plan to resist the Trump administration. Meanwhile, 89 percent of those who identify as Republicans—a small minority in the federal government—say they plan to support Trump’s agenda.

Trump has long pushed for using the Schedule F employment designation to remove or reassign career federal workers who choose to undermine his policies.

Notably, those designated as Main Street Americans by RMG Research largely oppose the unelected federal bureaucracy’s intention to disrupt the incoming Trump administration.Additionally, the same segment—representing about 70 to 75 percent of Americans—also has lower trust in government.

According to the survey, Main Street Americans support Trump’s agenda by 59 percent, with just 28 percent supporting resistance against it. Only 48 percent of the so-called political elite support Trump’s plans, while 39 percent support resistance against Trump.

Firefighters faced low water pressure when battling Mountain fire. Here's what happened

In a matter of hours, the Mountain fire charged rapidly across the Santa Susana Mountains and into nearby foothill neighborhoods, forcing widespread evacuations and demanding intense firefights from crews showered in red-hot embers.

Even as hundreds of firefighters around the region immediately kicked into action, the wind-driven blaze grew in unpredictable and dangerous ways, razing homes, tearing through orchards and threatening thousands living in and around Camarillo, Moorpark and Santa Paula.

But officials made an early decision that would pay off: by prioritizing life-saving missions over property protection, no one died in the otherwise devastating wildfire. Only a few minor injuries were reported.

But not everything went off without a hitch. About five hours after the fire ignited near Somis around 9 a.m. on Nov. 6, some firefighters hit a snag in their response efforts.

"We are having some water issues up here where we've got low water pressure," one firefighter could be heard saying in recordings of radio traffic that day. He asked command staff to check with the water providers and sort out any problems.

Then, hours later in the hills around Camarillo, Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Hugh Montgomery — responding to Ventura County's call for aid — said that his engine had hit a roadblock after successfully salvaging about a dozen burning homes.

"We were inside of a structure fire and starting to make good headway when the hydrants went dry,” he said.

That evening at a news conference, Ventura County Fire Capt. Trevor Johnson addressed a question about water issues, saying that water availability remained a challenge, and a dangerous one.

"Just to locate fire hydrants when the water system is failing — everything is dangerous out there," Johnson said.

Reports about water pressure issues and dry hydrants splashed across the evening news that night with images of smoldering homes in the background.

Specifics on the extent of the problem weren't immediately available, but two water pumps in the Camarillo foothills — the area hit hardest by fire losses — became inactive during the firefight, halting or slowing the process to refill hillside water tanks that fuel high-elevation fire hydrants, officials confirmed this week. One pump was completely destroyed in the blaze while another lost power during Southern California Edison's planned electricity shutoffs, and it took hours to bring it back online with a generator, according to officials at the Calleguas Municipal Water District.

However, water and firefighting authorities maintain the disruptions are expected and planned for during major wildfires, asserting that it simply shifts firefighting operations. They were adamant that water remained available at other sources nearby.

During the frantic moments on Tuesday after a wildfire jumped containment near a residential neighborhood in Lahaina, Hawaii, firefighters rushing to slow the spread were distressed to find that their hydrants were starting to run dry.

Hoping to control the blaze as it took root among homes along the hillside nearly a mile above the center of town, fire crews encountered water pressure that was increasingly feeble, with the wind turning the streams into mist. Then, as the inferno stoked by hurricane-force gusts grew, roaring further toward the historic center of town on the island of Maui, the hydrants sputtered and became largely useless.

“There was just no water in the hydrants,” said Keahi Ho, one of the firefighters who was on duty in Lahaina.

The collapse of the town’s water system, described to The New York Times by several people on scene, is yet another disastrous factor in a confluence that ended up producing what is now the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than 100 years. The lack of water forced firefighters into an extraordinary rush to save lives by risking their own, and it has left people searching for answers about how the community can better prepare for a world of fiercer winds and drier lands.

Edwin Lindsey III, who goes by Ekolu, a Lahaina resident who lost his home and also sits on the county’s Board of Water Supply, said he spoke with a firefighter who said it had been demoralizing for crews to watch the advance of the fire with little ability to slow it. He said he hoped that the water issues, one of a number of challenges the community faced — including a struggle to evacuate all residents — would be part of a larger discussion about lessons from the fire.

“What do we learn from this?” he said.

The water system in Lahaina relies on both surface water from a creek and groundwater pumped from wells. Persistent drought conditions combined with population growth have already led officials at the state and local level to explore ways to shore up water supplies, and they broke ground on a new well two months ago to increase capacity.

On the day the fire tore through Lahaina, the fight was complicated by winds in excess of 70 miles per hour, stoked by a hurricane offshore. Not only did the wind fuel the blaze, it made it impossible during much of the day to launch helicopters that could have carried in and dropped water from the ocean.

Early that day, as winds knocked out power to thousands of people, county officials urged people to conserve water, saying that “power outages are impacting the ability to pump water.”

John Stufflebean, the county’s director of water supply, said backup generators allowed the system to maintain sufficient overall supply throughout the fire. But he said that as the fire began moving down the hillside, turning homes into rubble, many properties were damaged so badly that water was spewing out of their melting pipes, depressurizing the network that also supplies the hydrants.

“The water was leaking out of the system,” he said.

Trump Lauds Fetterman as ‘Fascinating’ After Mar-a-Lago Meeting.

President-elect Donald J. Trump is praising Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) after the two met at Mar-a-Lago over the weekend. Fetterman, accompanied by his wife Gisele, became the first and—so far—only Democratic Senator to meet with the President-elect.

“It was a totally fascinating meeting. He’s a fascinating man, and his wife is lovely. They were both up, andI couldn’t be more impressed,” Trump said after the weekend meeting with the Pennsylvania Democrat. (Has anyone seen his wife in public since 2022?)

In a statement responding to Democratic Party pushback against his decision to meet with Trump, Sen. Fetterman emphasized that he does not only represent one political party as a federal lawmaker. “President Trump invited me to meet, and I accepted. I’m the senator for all Pennsylvanians—not just Democrats in Pennsylvania,” Fetterman said, adding:“I’ve been clear that no one is my gatekeeper. I will meet with and have a conversation with anyone if it helps me deliver for Pennsylvania and the nation.”*

Fetterman, a progressive and quasi-populist figure who gained attention after winning the 2022 Democratic primary against Conor Lamb, has distinguished himself among Democrats in Congress. At times, he has diverged from the progressive wing of his party on topics like immigration and Israel.

Following Trump’s landslide 2024 presidential election victory, Fetterman warned the corporate media to “chill out” about covering the President-elect. He said, “I’m not rooting against him,” adding that opposition to the president implies opposition to the nation.

LOS BANOS, Calif. — Robert Zavala was fresh out of the Marines and looking to escape dead-end work at a poultry plant in the early 1990s when his old baseball coach — now the head of a local water district — swooped to the rescue with a job offer.

Zavala was grateful for the job, which eventually paid more than $150,000 a year and included perks such as free housing and a new truck. Grateful enough, he later testified in state court, that when he learned the public agency he worked for was stealing water from the federal government he kept his mouth shut. For years.

And then one day in 2016, FBI agents showed up at his house.

“They told me they were investigating my boss for water theft, and they wanted to know if I wanted to go to federal prison with him,” Zavala said in his testimony.

Zavala became one of many employees the FBI would interview about goings-on in the Panoche Water District, a public agency formed in 1951 that supplies irrigation for 38,000 acres of farmland in Fresno and Merced counties on the parched western side of the San Joaquin Valley.

The stories were “unimaginable,” one Panoche official later testified in the same civil case. Public funds were allegedly used to pay for housing and pickup trucks for employees, along with slot machines, illicit home remodels, tickets to Katy Perry concerts, even an employee’s court-ordered restitution for an assault charge, according to testimony in the civil case, court filings in a state criminal case and a related state audit.

Not to mention the alleged theft of 130,000 acre feet of water — enough to supply a small city for several years.

Federal prosecutors would eventually bring felony charges against Zavala’s old boss, the former general manager of the Panoche Water District, accusing him of one of the most audacious and long-running water heists in California history.

In a state with prolonged bouts of drought and unquenching thirst, stolen water is an indelible part of California lore. But this was not Los Angeles’ brazen gambit to take water from the Owens Valley. Or San Francisco’s ploy to flood part of Yosemite National Park for a reservoir. The water grab described in a federal indictment allegedly happened cat burglar-style, siphoned through a secret pipe, often after hours, to avoid detection.

Prosecutors have accused Dennis Falaschi, 77, a gregarious local irrigation official, of masterminding the theft of more than $25 million worth of water out of a federal canal over the course of two decades and selling it to farmers and other local water districts. According to the allegations, proceeds that should have gone to the federal government instead were used to benefit Falaschi, his water district and a small group of co-conspirators, much of it funneled into exorbitant salaries and lavish fringe benefits.

For more than a year, Falaschi maintained his innocence, insisting there had been no theft. Then this spring, his attorneys filed paperwork that said he was prepared to change his plea. Exactly what he will plead guilty to remains unclear: A change-of-plea hearing initially scheduled for April was pushed back at least a month while the two sides continue to wrangle. Attorneys in both camps have declined to discuss their negotiations.

Because in this dusty and often forgotten part of California, water has never come easy and the quest to transform an arid valley into a hothouse of agricultural bounty has led to environmental catastrophe and decades of strife.

Some farmers who relied on Falaschi and his irrigation district were outraged — at the government. They see him as the Robin Hood of irrigation: Any alleged sins would have been committed with the noble intention of making sure desperate farmers got the water they needed to grow the food that feeds the nation.

Others were furious. San Joaquin Valley farmers are already fighting stricter irrigation limits as the state looks to ensure healthy water flows for wildlife and curb groundwater pumping that is causing portions of the valley to sink. The idea that a water official may have been stealing supplies would only make it more difficult for farmers to secure the water they needed in the years ahead.

The allegations also raised unsettling questions: According to prosecutors, the illicit siphoning stretched from 1992 to 2015, and Falaschi wasn’t the only one who appeared to be living the high life. So who else was in on the alleged scheme? And why did state and federal water officials take so long to notice?

Falaschi’s attorney, Marc Days, declined to make his client available. This report is based on interviews with former water district employees and Los Banos residents, as well as Bureau of Reclamation records and civil and criminal cases filed in state and federal courts.

“You know the saying, right? Whiskey is for drinking, and water is for fighting over,” said Mark Walsh, who was employed in the spring of 2015 as a hydrographer for the San Luis & Delta-Mendota Water Authority, the agency that oversees the federal government’s water operations in the western San Joaquin Valley. “Water is liquid gold” in these parts, he added. “If you got it, you can make a ton of money.”

Walsh, whose family has been in Los Banos for three generations, was tasked with driving miles up and down the Delta-Mendota Canal to make sure the hundreds of pipes and irrigation ditches connected to the canal were functioning — and measuring all the water flowing out. “It’s a little bit of algebra, a whole lotta math,” he said of the various checks he would do, often in the sweltering heat.

He was just past Checkpoint 17 on a bright morning in April 2015 when his eye caught a burst of yellow where it didn’t belong: a straw hat near an irrigation pipe that had been abandoned, a remnant from an old irrigation setup. The hat was spinning in circles, as if caught in a whirlpool. But that made no sense. There wasn’t supposed to be any water flowing through that pipe, certainly not enough to spin a hat.

Walsh stopped to take a closer look.

Truckers sue Minnesota for refusing to recognize out-of-state firearm permits.

Minnesota decides each year which state firearm permits it will recognize. Currently, it does not recognize permits from Texas, Georgia, Florida or 26 other states.
