Judge in Hunter Biden case sued over underage drinking party, alleged beating

he federal judge in Los Angeles who presided over Hunter Biden's criminal tax fraud case has been sued over a party at his home where “significant” underage drinking allegedly led to a guest being assaulted and later hospitalized.

The injured guest, Alex Wilson, filed the suit against U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi and his wife, Laura Scarsi, alleging that they were negligent in allowing teens from “various schools, including Loyola High School and St. Francis High School,” to consume alcohol without proper supervision.

The party occurred sometime in 2023 — the lawsuit offers two conflicting dates — at the Scarsis' gated Pasadena mansion. While the festivities were underway, a fight among “heavily intoxicated underage minors” erupted in front of the Scarsis' home and on their property, according to the suit, which was filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court and first reported by Law360.

Wilson alleges that one of the guests, Jackson Dorlarque, assaulted him and struck “his head and body on a curb on the Scarsi property.” From the beating, Wilson lost consciousness, sustained a traumatic brain injury, and had to be hospitalized for more than two weeks, according to the lawsuit. The suit contends that a “major” cut to Wilson’s face has left permanent scarring that "will require" plastic surgery.

Wilson's age, background and educational status are unclear, with the lawsuit offering just one detail: He is a resident of L.A. County. Wilson's attorney, James Orland, did not respond to multiple messages seeking comment.

In addition to the physical injuries, Wilson alleges he has suffered emotional trauma and social anxiety in the wake of the incident.

Wilson is seeking unspecified damages, arguing that the Scarsis did not properly supervise or secure the party and that they are liable “if they knowingly provide alcohol to minors or allow underage drinking to occur on their property

Wilson also brought an assault and battery claim against Dorlarque and his parents, Aaron Dorlarque and Jessica Brumfiel, arguing that the parents are liable for their son’s alleged conduct.

It's unclear whether Scarsi and his wife were present during the alleged party or beating. Scarsi did not respond to requests for comment, including an email sent to the judge's chambers. Dorlarque and his parents did not respond to messages seeking comment.

Then-President Trump appointed Scarsi, 59, to the federal bench in 2020. Before assuming his lifetime appointment, Scarsi was a prominent patent and intellectual property attorney.

From his courtroom in downtown L.A., he has presided over high-profile matters, including two cases brought by special counsel David Weiss: the prosecution of Hunter Biden and a separate prosecution of a former FBI informant, Alexander Smirnov.

Recently, Scarsi gained national attention after he penned a rebuke of President Biden’s reasons for issuing a “full and complete” pardon of his son, Hunter.

Scarsi was scheduled to sentence Hunter Biden, probably to prison, after Biden pleaded guilty to tax offenses. In Delaware, Biden had been convicted of illegally purchasing a gun, but the pardon wiped both convictions away.

Scarsi excoriated the president for asserting in a news release that his son was treated unfairly because of his last name. After also criticizing the president for offering an incomplete version of his son's criminal case, Scarsi tartly noted that the president enjoyed “broad authority to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States … but nowhere does the Constitution give the President the authority to rewrite history.”

Smirnov pleaded guilty Monday to lying to a federal agent about a fake bribery scheme involving the Bidens, along with tax evasion. Scarsi is scheduled to sentence Smirnov next month; prosecutors have agreed to seek four to six years in prison.

'Revealed: Dr. Oz had up to tens of millions invested in companies involved with CMS

Dr. Mehmet Oz, the "former daytime television fixture" who U.S. President-elect Donald Trump picked to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, reported "up to $56 million in investments in three companies" with direct CMS interests, the watchdog Accountable•US highlighted Friday.

The celebrity heart surgeon is already under fire for his record of peddling "baseless or wrong" health advice and pushing Medicare Advantage (MA)—an alternative to the government-run program administered by private health insurance companies—on The Dr. Oz Show, as well as his stake in UnitedHealth and CVS Health.

The new Accountable•US report—based on disclosures from Oz's unsuccessful 2022 run against U.S. Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.)—adds to conflict of interest concerns and fears that Oz may thwart the Biden administration's new rule intended to rein in privatized Medicare Advantage plans.

"Dr. Oz's conflicts of interest pose a serious threat to seniors' health security."

"In 2022, Oz's 'single biggest healthcare holding' was up to $26 million in Sharecare, a digital health company Oz co-founded that became the 'exclusive in-home care supplemental benefit program' for 1.5 million MA enrollees across 400 MA plans through its CareLinx service in 2022," the watchdog detailed. "By 2023, CareLinx was available to over 2 million MA enrollees. Sharecare was taken private in a $518 million private equity deal in 2024, and it is unknown if Oz still holds a stake."

The group noted that "in 2022, Oz disclosed holding up to $25 million in Amazon and up to $5 million in Microsoft, which CMS called its 'two primary cloud service providers' in its FY 2025 budget document, which requested over $3.3 billion in information technology funding for the year. Notably, Amazon Web Services hosted 74 million Medicaid records as early as 2017 and the company has been contracted to streamline Healthcare•gov, the federal health insurance portal run by CMS."

Accountable•US "reviewed filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission and was unable to find evidence that Oz sold stocks in Amazon or Microsoft since the 2022 filing," according to USA Today—which found that Oz's stakes could be as high as $26.7 million for Amazon and $6.3 million for Microsoft.

When asked if Oz still owned the stocks in the two tech giants, Trump transition spokesperson Brian Hughes only said that "all nominees and appointees will comply with the ethical obligations of their respective agencies."

Given the nominee's TV and investment history, Accountable•US executive director Tony Carrk declared Friday that "seniors deserve a CMS leader who will protect and strengthen Medicare—not someone like Dr. Oz who wants to privatize this vital and hugely popular program for great personal gain."

"If Dr. Oz and Project 2025 had their way, Medicare as we know it would end, replaced with private insurance plans that cost taxpayers more and leave patients vulnerable to denials of care and higher premiums," Carrk continued, citing the Heritage Foundation-led playbook for the incoming Republican president.

"Dr. Oz's conflicts of interest pose a serious threat to seniors' health security," he added, "but as long as big insurance industry megadonors are happy, President-elect Trump doesn't seem to mind."

While Trump has the power to pick the next CMS administrator, the selection requires Senate confirmation—unless the president-elect works around it to install his most controversial nominees.

On Tuesday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and six colleagues wrote to Oz to express their concerns about his qualifications, "advocacy for the elimination of traditional Medicare," and "deep financial ties to private health insurers."

"As CMS administrator, you would be tasked with overseeing Medicare and ensuring that the tens of millions of seniors that rely on the program receive the care they deserve, including cracking down on abuses by private insurers in Medicare Advantage," they pointed out. "The consequences of failure on your part would be grave. Billions of federal healthcare dollars—and millions of lives—are at stake."

The lawmakers sent Oz a list of questions, requesting responses by December 23. They inquired about his views on traditional Medicare and revelations that "private companies overcharge taxpayers and unlawfully deny care." They also asked whether, as administrator, he would commit to "fully divesting of any and all financial holdings related to the insurance industry" and "recusing from any decisions that may impact insurers" in which he has a stake.

Sharing the letter on social media Wednesday, Accountable•US said that Warren "is right: this glaring conflict of interest endangers seniors and puts billions in corporate pockets."

Kiev’s troops report abysmal conditions during Kursk incursion – Economist

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky is pushing troops forward despite incurring heavy casualties on Russian territory

Ukrainian forces are complaining about terrible conditions in Russia’s Kursk Region, where they are struggling against the military superiority of their opponents, according to a report by The Economist.

Kiev launched its incursion in August with the stated goals of alleviating Russian pressure in other parts of the front line, and securing a bargaining chip for use in future peace talks.

Russia has a “massive” advantagein manpower and military hardware, while Ukrainians are having to endure pest infestations, bad weather, and enemy attacks, the British magazine said on Monday, citing interviews with troops on the ground.

“Rain, slush, snow, cold, mud, beetles, worms, rats, and glide bombs,” an NCO with Ukraine’s 95th Air Assault Brigade said of the situation. “In Kursk, death is always close; it practically holds your hand.”

“Every unit in Kursk has switched to defense,”an artillery commander with the 82nd Air Assault Brigade told the outlet.

Ukrainian journalistsworking for a local newspaper in the area bordering Kursk Regionno longer cover the incursion because they know “too much” to toe the official linethat it was “Ukraine’s great and only triumph of 2024," they told the British outlet.

The operation makes no military sense, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed on Monday during a year-end meeting at the Defense Ministry.

“Whoever you ask, our andforeign military experts, all believe that this thing in Kursk is an adventure, ‘the Kursk adventure,’ they call it," he said.

The Ukrainian government is illegitimate and is =perpetrating crimes against Russian and Ukrainian citizens alike==, the president added.

The Russian military estimates Ukrainian losses during the Kursk incursion at over 41,000. Ukrainian leader VladimirZelensky has reportedly ordered troops to hold onto Russian land at all costs, until Donald Trump is inauguratedas the next US president on January 20.
