Ancient Orthodox cathedral in Ukraine turned into movie theater – MP (PHOTOS)

The cathedral was seized last year from the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church because it allegedly needed renovation

The Transfiguration Cathedral, one of the oldest Orthodox churches in Ukraine and which dates back to the early 11th century, has been turned into a makeshift movie theater, according to an MP.

The issue has been highlighted by Artyom Dmitruk, a Ukrainian lawmaker known for his public opposition to the Kiev government’s crackdown on the country’s largest Christian denomination, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC). The MP was ultimately forced to flee the country over his views and is now being sought by Ukrainian authorities.

Dmitruk has cited imagery circulating online to back up his assertions. The building was seized by authorities last year.

“[Vladimir] Zelensky’s dogs, having seized the most ancient cathedral in Ukraine, set up a cinema in it and removed all the icons,” Dmitruk wrote on his Telegram channel, claiming that people attending the ‘cinema’ have been charged 20 hryvnias (about 50 cents) for entry.

Pictures shared by the MP show a darkened interior of the cathedral, with a small group watching a large TV screen erected in front of the altar.The place of worshipappears to lack any icons, with some pictures placed on easels visible near the TV.. According to local media reports, the images were recorded on Friday at the premiere of a documentary movie titled ‘Principality of Chernigov. 1,000 years.’

Transfiguration Cathedral, located about 100 miles north of Kiev, was seized by the authorities in October last year, with the UOC priests forcibly evicted from its premises by armed and masked individuals. Officials and a local museum that were managing the cathedral and leasing it to the canonical church at the time, claimed the premises was in an extremely poor condition due to UOC’s neglect and that it required renovation immediately.

In the same post, Dmitruk also mentioned a recent scandal in the western Ukrainian city of Lutsk, where a local cathedral, controlled by the schismatic Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), was adorned with frescoes of local businessmen, who purportedly donated funds to its restoration.

“The OCU cathedral in Lutsk was painted with frescoes with portraits of local bandit-businessmen. The work has been initiated personally by the Volyn ‘bishop’ of the OCU Mikhail Zinkevich. This is awful,” the MP wrote.

The frescoes have reportedly received a mixed reaction even among local followers of the OCU, with some branding the display a sacrilege and demanding their removal. However, painting portraits of ktetors, major donors who provide funds for construction or reconstruction of a church, is a longstanding tradition in Eastern Christianity and is not offensive by any means.

Ukraine has been gripped by religious tensions throughout most of its modern history, with multiple entities claiming to be the country’s true Orthodox Church.

The situation rapidly deteriorated after 2018, when the OCU was established with the active backing of then-president Pyotr Poroshenko, who secured a special decree to legitimize the entity from the Constantinople Patriarchate. The move caused a major rift in the Orthodox world, with the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) severing its ties with Constantinople and branding the OCU schismatics.

The persecution of the canonical UOC intensified after the escalation of a long-running conflict between Moscow and Kiev in February 2022. Although the church formally declared independence from Moscow, this did not spare it from repeated accusations of working for Russia

A service was held in the village of Pesky just outside of Donetsk

Russian troops have taken part in a prayer service at a churchin the village of Pesky that had suffered significant damage from Ukrainian attacks, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on Sunday.

Pesky is a small settlement on the northwestern outskirts of the city of Donetsk that has seen fighting since the early stages of the conflict in 2014. The damaged church where the service was held belongs to a small Orthodox women’s monastery.

The service was conducted by a military chaplain for the Orthodox members of the Russian 9th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade, a unit formed from veterans of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) militia. The region opposed the 2014 Western-led coup in Kiev and joined Russia in late 2022, after residents voted to do so in a referendum.

A video released by the ministry showed a small group of uniformed men led by the priest making their way into the church,bringing some icons in with them before joining in a prayer.

In places like this, where temples suffered bleeding wounds, prayers for holy Russia are particularly strong,” Father Oleg said of the service.

Ukraine’s Orthodox community is currently in disarray after the government in Kiev cracked down on the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), pressuring priests and worshipers to leave it and join the much more recently created Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

The UOC is self-governed but has historical and spiritual ties with the Russian Orthodox Church. A law enacted this past September gave the church nine months to distance itself from Moscow or be formally banned.

Ukrainian tycoon accuses Zelensky of stealing his company

The former mentor and key backer of the comedian-turned-president believes his ex-protege has betrayed him.

Businessman Igor Kolomoisky, once a key political ally and mentor to Vladimir Zelensky, has accused the Ukrainian leader of orchestrating the illegal seizure of his oil assets, specifically the firms Ukrnafta and Ukrtatnafta.

In an interview with UNIAN published on Saturday, Kolomoisky described how his shares in the companies were effectively seized by the government in November 2022 under the guise of national security. Zelensky publicly said the move was essential for the country’s defense.

Kolomoisky has been in jail since September 2023, and claims the nationalization was a calculated move by Zelensky to eliminate him as a rival and gain control over his businesses.

As co-owner of the Privat Group conglomerate, Kolomoisky was once an influential figure in Ukraine’s business and media sectors. He alleges that the Kiev authorities used the needs of the armed forces as an excuse to achieve their goal of taking control of the two oil giants.

“The decision to transfer the shares was not made by the military command,” he stated. “The president’s office used the military to achieve its goal of raider seizure.”

The businessman has also spoken of a blackmail campaign he allegedly endured in 2022, when the then Deputy Head of the Office of the President, Rostislav Shurma, supposedly suggested he voluntarily relinquish his shares in exchange for resolving his ongoing legal battles with the authorities. Kolomoisky claims that after his refusal, Zelensky secretly revoked his Ukrainian citizenship and seized his holdings.

He further claims that the seizure was part of a broader effort to consolidate control over valuable assets, despite his previous support for Zelensky.

At the time of the nationalization, Zelensky’s government justified the move by citing the importance of the assets for national defense, with officials suggesting Ukrnafta had refused to supply fuel to the military, although Kolomoisky vehemently denies this.According to the tycoon, both companies had been supplying fuel voluntarily, without contracts, and continued doing so during the early stages of the war.

The business mogul’s claims come as he continues to battle charges related to money laundering and embezzlement of funds from PrivatBank, which was nationalized in 2016.

From detention, Kolomoisky is continuing to push for a legal investigation into the taking of his assets, accusing Zelensky and other officials of corruption.

NGC 300: A Galaxy of Stars

This galaxy is unusual for how many stars it seems that you can see. Stars are so abundantly evident in this deep exposure of the spiral galaxy NGC 300 because so many of these stars are bright blue and grouped into resolvable bright star clusters. Additionally, NGC 300 is so clear because it is one of the closest spiral galaxies to Earth, as light takes only about 6 million years to get here. Of course, galaxies are composed of many more faint stars than bright, and even more of a galaxy's mass is attributed to unseen dark matter. NGC 300 spans nearly the same amount of sky as the full moon and is visible with a small telescope toward the southern constellation of the Sculptor. The featured image was captured in October from Rio Hurtado, Chile and is a composite of over 20 hours of exposure.

Patel Pick Draws Fire From Democrats, Some Republicans

Trump announced the nomination Saturday evening on Truth Social, prompting a wave of responses from lawmakers across the political aisle, ranging from either vehement opposition or a light skepticism.

On Sunday, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., told NBC News that over Thanksgiving, he received bomb threats and that he was "concerned" Patel would protect only Republicans.

Other Democrats expressing skepticism included Sen. Dick Durbin, the Senate's majority whip. According to CBS News, Durbin in a letter urged his colleagues to reject Patel.

"The Senate should reject this unprecedented effort to weaponize the FBI for the campaign of retribution that Donald Trump has promised," Durbin wrote.

Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., told ABC News' "This Week" that he has no complaints about Wray and thinks Trump "picked a very good man to be the director of the FBI when he did that in his first term."

"The president has the right to make nominations, but normally these are for a 10-year term. We'll see what his process is, and whether he actually makes that nomination.

"And then, if he does, just as with anybody who is nominated for one of these positions, once they've been nominated by the president, then the president gets, you know, the benefit of the doubt on the nomination. But we still go through a process, and that process includes advice and consent, which for the Senate means advice or consent sometimes," he said.

John Bolton, former national security adviser to Trump, compared Patel to Soviet Union leader Josef Stalin's head of secret police, Lavrentiy Beria, on CNN.

"Trump has nominated Kash Patel to be his Lavrentiy Beria. Fortunately, the FBI is not the NKVD [People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs]. The Senate should reject this nomination 100-0," Bolton said.

Vice President-elect J.D. Vance responded to Bolton's statement on X, writing: "John Bolton has been wrong about everything so I guess Kash must be pretty awesome."

NASA Communication Balloon Helps Crews Battle Wildfires

NASA and the Forest Service are teaming up to tackle a problem firefighters face while battling a wildfire. Remote areas are often the sites of wildfires, and with that is a lack of cell service, which is critical for communication.

NASA and the Forest Service tested the Strategic Tactical Radio and Tactical Overwatch (STRATO) technology to address that issue.

STRATO Communication

In addition to the two agencies, the high-altitude balloon company Aerostar and Motorola helped to provide cell service from the sky.

“This project leverages NASA expertise to address real problems,” said Don Sullivan, principal investigator for STRATO at NASA Ames.

“We do a lot of experimental, forward-thinking work, but this is something that is operational and can make an immediate impact.”

Aerostar’s Thunderhead high-altitude balloon systems soar over 50,000 feet in the air and operate for several months at a time. While the systems operate, they can be directed into “station keep,” staying in a small radius.

With the balloon and STRATO technology, communication with firefighters can move with the flames. Having constant communication improves the firefighters’ safety and efficiency.

Wildfire Tested

The STRATO project’s first test occurred in August during the West Mountain Complex wildfires in Idaho and showed significant potential for supporting firefighting efforts.

The balloon was equipped with an LTE transmitter and visual and infrared cameras. A SpaceX Starlink internet satellite device and Silvus broadband wireless system allowed the balloon to transmit to the fire command post.

The onboard instruments provided cell coverage for a 20-mile radius. By placing the transmitter on a Gimbel, the coverage could be moved as the firefighters adjusted their location in the area.

Onboard cameras also gave the fire crews a bird’s eye view of the fire as it spread and moved. On the ground, an app called Tactical Awareness Kit (TAK) allowed firefighters to locate equipment and other crews.

When the app and STRATO connect, it pinpoints real-time locations so firefighters can track how the fires move while staying in constant communication and direct resources.

A Sky-High Future

The next step for STRATO is to use the results from the August fires to prepare for future seasons. According to NASA, the teams want to expand coverage by optimizing balloon locations as a cluster.

A cluster also helps the balloons anticipate airflow changes in the stratosphere where they fly. Placing balloons in strategic locations along the airflow path, they replace one another as the airflow stream carries them away.

As the teams plan for more testing, the ultimate goal is constant communication between firefighters to improve safety and efficiency.

“Firefighters work incredibly hard saving lives and property over long days of work,” said Sullivan. “I feel honored to be able to do what we can to make their jobs safer and better.”

The Hanwha-led group has sought antidumping duty rates of between 70.35% and 271.45%, depending on the country, to offset the unfair pricing. It also has sought tariffs to combat unfair subsidies in those nations, and the Commerce Department imposed preliminary antisubsidy duties last month.

On Friday, the department issued a range of preliminary rates for panels from the four countries. Its final determinations are set for April 18, 2025, with the ITC set to finalize its determinations the following June 2 and final orders expected June 9.

Most solar panels installed in the United States are made overseas, and some 80% of imports come from the four nations targeted in the Commerce Department probe.

Tariffs would increase prices for companies that import panels to install on rooftops or build solar power plants, but the United States over more than a decade has shown a willingness to impose duties on the sector in a bid to bolster the small U.S. clean energy manufacturing industry.

The Biden administration this year raised the alarm over China's massive investment in factory capacity for clean energy goods. Biden's landmark climate change law, the Inflation Reduction Act, includes incentives for companies that produce clean energy equipment in the United States — a subsidy that has prompted a flurry of plans for new solar factories.

President-elect Donald Trump has called the Inflation Reduction Act too expensive, but also has said he plans to slap hefty tariffs on a range of sectors to protect American workers.

Dumping occurs when a company sells a product in the United States at a price below its cost of production or lower than what it charges in its home country.

Stanford misinformation expert accused of using AI to fabricate court statement

Communication professor Jeff Hancock, anexpert on technology and misinformation, has been accused of usingartificial intelligence (AI) to craft a court statement.

In November,Hancock — who is the founding directorof Stanford’s Social Media Lab —filed a declaration in a Minnesota court caseover the state’s 2023 law that criminalizes the use of deepfakes to influence an election. Theprofessor’s 12-page declarationin defense of the law contained 15 citations,two of which cannot be found.

The plaintiffs of the case, Republican Minnesota State Representative Mary Franson and conservative social media satirist Christopher Kohls,argued that the law is an unconstitutional limit on free speech. Submitting his testimony on behalf of a defendant, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, Hancock claimed that deepfakes, or AI-generated media that alter a person’s likeness or voice, can enhance the persuasiveness of misinformation and defy traditional factchecking methods.

He made his declaration, for whichhe was compensated at the government rate of $600 per hour, under penalty of perjury that everything he stated in the document was “true and correct.”

The Daily and other news outletscould not find two academic journal articles that Hancock cited— “Deepfakes and the Illusion of Authenticity: Cognitive Processes Behind Misinformation Acceptance” and “The Influence of Deepfake Videos on Political Attitudes and Behavior” — via their reported digital object identifier or in the archives of their reported journals.

Pointing out the errors in Hancock’s declaration in a Nov. 16 filing, Franson and Kohls’ attorney Frank Berdnarz called for it to be excluded from the judge’s consideration of whether to give a preliminary injunction against the law.

“The citation bears the hallmarks of being an artificial intelligence (AI) ‘hallucination,’ suggesting that at least the citation was generated by a large language model like ChatGPT,” Berdnarz wrote. “The existence of a fictional citation Hancock(or his assistants) didn’t even bother to click calls into question the quality and veracity of the entire declaration.”

The Daily has reached out to Hancock for comment.

Hancock, who currently teaches COMM 1: “Introduction to Communication” and COMM 324: “Language and Technology,”appearedin a 2024 Netflix documentary featuringBill Gates, offering insights on the future of AI.

The professor isscheduled to teachCOMM 124/224:“Truth, Trust, and Tech” on deception and communication technology in the spring.

Kohls, known for his social mediamoniker Mr. Reagan, previouslychallenged the constitutionalityof two California bills signed into law in September by Gov. Gavin Newsom. The bills, AB 2655 and AB 2839, require online platforms to block certain deceptive media content relating to elections and prohibit the distribution of advertising content with deceptive media content. Newsom called out Kohls’ viral video, which manipulated Kamala Harris’ voice in a campaign ad, to be illegal.

A high-ranking Israeli army general who serves as the head of the Strategy and Third-Circle Directorate, which is tasked with the military’s Iran file, has announced his intention to step down.

Major General Eliezer Toledano told his subordinates that he does not plan to run for the Israeli military’s chief of staff, and he will resign when his current role comes to an end, according to Israeli media.

This comes as several recent media reports had referred to Toledano as a potential successor to the Israeli army’s chief of staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, who indicated he would resign at the end of the army’s investigations into the failures on the surprise and large-scale attack by Hamas and other Gaza-based resistance groups against the Zionist entity on October 7 last year.

Toledano was the head of the Southern Command until July 2023, and before that, he was the commander of the Gaza Division.

He also served as prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s military secretary.

Last week, the commander of an Israeli brigade handed in his letter of resignation following an incident that saw the death of an archaeologist in Lebanon.
