During a Univision town hall on Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris doubled down on furthering the ongoing invasion at the U.S. southern border if elected president this November.

The moment came when a prospective voter questioned Harris about what she would do to support noncitizens who have resided in the United States “for years.” The Democrat nominee bragged about how “the first” piece of legislation the Biden-Harris administration sent to Congress was a bill that, among many things, sought to provide amnesty to illegal immigrants within the country.

Referred to by the White House as the U.S. Citizenship Act, the measure specifically would have allowed foreign nationals residing in the United States prior to Jan. 1, 2021, “to apply for temporary legal status, with the ability to apply for green cards after five years if they pass criminal and national security background checks and pay their taxes.” After a three-year waiting period, “all green card holders who pass additional background checks and demonstrate knowledge of English and U.S. civics can apply to become citizen.”

But Harris didn’t stop there. She went on to lament the death of a “border security bill” introduced by bipartisan members of Congress earlier this year, a bill that would have enshrined the existing invasion at the U.S.-Mexico border into law.

“A bipartisan group of members of Congress, including one of the most conservative members of the United States Senate, came together with one of the strongest border security bills we’ve had in decades,” Harris claimed. “And Donald Trump found out about that bill, realized it would be a solution, and told them not to put it on the floor for a vote because he would prefer to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem.”

As The Federalist has repeatedly noted, the vice president’s claim that the bill would have stopped the influx of illegal immigration across the southern border is a lie. In fact, the legislation specifically guaranteed thousands of illegal aliens would be allowed into the United States via the border every day,

As David Harsanyi wrote in these pages, that amounts to (at least) “nearly 2 million entries per year.”

When responding to a separate question later in the town hall, Harris reaffirmed her support for granting the millions of illegal immigrants in the United States amnesty, saying we must “do the work of focusing on what we must do to have an orderly and humane pathway to earn citizenship” for noncitizens.

As vice president and “border czar,” Harris has presided over what is arguably the worst illegal immigration crisis in modern U.S. history. According to an October 2023 report by the Washington Examiner, an estimated 10 million illegal aliens have unlawfully entered the United States since Biden and Harris took office in January 2021.

Most recently, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed in a letter to Congress that more than 647,000 illegal immigrants convicted or suspected of sexual assault, homicide, and other heinous crimes are roaming free in the United States. That communique came days after retired Chief Border Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke claimed in testimony before Congress that Biden-Harris administration officials told him he “could not release any names or information” to the American public on the increase of illegal aliens with “significant ties to terrorism” who were apprehended at the southern border.

Apparently, the answer is a company-wide, hilarious struggle session.

On Monday, the anniversary of the October 7 attacks, Paramount Global chairwoman Shari Redstone was alerted to a fast-metastasizing, five-alarm shitshow at her company’s news division—and one that would turn out to be particularly personal for her. Earlier that morning, on a staff-wide call, CBS News C.E.O. Wendy McMahon and her deputy Adrienne Roark had stunned their teams by announcing that a recent CBS Mornings interview with the author Ta-Nehisi Coates had failed to meet the network’s editorial standards.

The executives didn’t specify the offense or offender, but they didn’t need to. McMahon and Roark were obviously admonishing the show’s co-anchor, Tony Dokoupil, for his interrogative on-air scrutiny of Coates and his new book, The Message. During a recent seven-minute segment, which had aired a week earlier, on September 30, the normally mild-mannered and affable Dokoupil came in hot to the roundtable interview with co-hosts Gayle King and Nate Burleson, the former NFL player. Dokoupil kicked things off by noting that The Message offered a one-sided account of the Israel-Palestine conflict that, absent Coates’s name and reputation and an American publisher, wouldn’t have been out of place in an extremist’s backpack.

Public scrutiny over the interview was relatively limited. Yes, it had garnered tens of millions of views and invited predictable criticism on Twitter from both sides. But Coates himself had not criticized the interview publicly, and The Washington Post had even commended the network for the unusually thought-provoking morning segment, declaring it “calm,” “heartfelt,” and “substantive.”

Internally, however, the fallout quickly gathered steam. Within 24 hours of the interview, McMahon had come under enormous pressure from several dozen employees in New York and abroad—foreign correspondents, morning show producers, seasoned veterans, and younger hands alike—who took issue with Dokoupil’s treatment of Coates, as well as what they perceived as his history of editorializing on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Meanwhile, a veritable alphabet soup of journalistic organizations—AAJA, SAJA, NABJ, AMEJA, etcetera—signaled plans to write letters of protest.

Last Tuesday, while the CBS News leadership was consumed with the network’s vice presidential debate, the issue was elevated to the network’s Race and Culture unit, which was formed in the summer of 2020, amid the George Floyd reckoning, and determines whether the “tone, content, and intention” of any segment or package are suitable for the network’s air. The unit, led by Alvin Patrick, determined that while Dokoupil’s questions and intentions were acceptable, his tone was not.

Meanwhile, the network’s Standards and Practices division, led by Claudia Milne, determined that Dokoupil had not followed the preproduction process wherein questions are run through Race and Culture and Standards and Practices. The following day, McMahon reached out to Dokoupil directly and informed him that the network would need to address the violation with staff, though she and Roark would spend the next three days deliberating over exactly how to do that. Ultimately, McMahon decided to have Roark announce the violation at the all-hands meeting, which angered a lot of Dokoupil’s friends and acolytes at the network.

On Monday morning, which happened to be the one-year anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel, Roark noted that Dokoupil’s indelicate tone failed to uphold “the legacy of neutrality and objectivity that is CBS News.” And then all hell broke loose.

Many within the media ruling class acknowledged that McMahon probably could not have handled this any worse, a point they reiterated after learning that CBS News had planned to follow up on Tuesday by bringing in Dr. Donald Grant, a self-described “mental health expert, D.E.I. strategist, and trauma trainer,” to moderate a staff-wide discussion on the issue. Shortly after I reported that detail, an Instagram post by Grant portraying Republican Senator Tim Scott as Uncle Tom surfaced on Twitter, inviting widespread scrutiny of CBS News from the right, both for its choice of Dr. Grant as well as its decision to invite a D.E.I. strategist and trauma trainer in the first place. CBS News ultimately decided not to include Dr. Grant.

Elon Musk Unveils the Long-Awaited Robotaxi and Tesla's Autonomous Future

Tesla has entered the robotaxi arena. CEO Elon Musk on Thursday unveiled the company's autonomous Robotaxi vehicle during its We, Robot event at Warner Bros.

Studios in Los Angeles. The car shown off is of a silver-chrome hue and features no steering wheel or pedals.

It'll charge via induction and use AI to navigate roads. Musk said the car will cost "below $30,000."

The process of rolling out fully autonomous, unsupervised driving will begin in Texas and California with the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y next year, Musk said, before the eventual rollout of the Robotaxi, which Musk also referred to as a Cybercab throughout the event.

"We expect to be in production with the Cybercab, which is really highly optimized for autonomous transport in probably well I tend to be a little optimistic with time frames," Musk hesitated, "but in 2026.

Before 2027, let me put it that way." That's all dependent on regulator approval, as Musk also noted.

"I think it's going to be a glorious future," he said.

Musk also unveiled what's called a Robovan, which is a larger autonomous vehicle that can fit up to 20 people in addition to carrying goods.

Tesla demonstrated the Robotaxi and Robovan by having them roam Warner Bros. Studios. Musk opened the event by hailing a ride in the Robotaxi to the keynote stage.

"When we think about transport today, there's a lot of pain that we take for granted that we think is normal, like having to drive around LA in 3 hours of traffic," Musk said during the keynote, undoubtedly appealing to those in attendance.

"With autonomy, you get your time back."

The self-driving space is fairly nascent but rapidly advancing.

Among the biggest players are Alphabet-owned Waymo, which operates in cities such as San Francisco, Phoenix and Los Angeles; and Amazon-owned Zoox, which hasn't yet opened to public riders but is conducting testing in cities including San Francisco, Las Vegas and Seattle.

GM-owned Cruise, which was suspended indefinitely in California last year after one of its driverless cars hit a jaywalking pedestrian, has also resumed operating manual and supervised rides in certain cities.

Musk and Tesla have long touted what the company calls Full Self-Driving, which has far from lived up to its name just yet. Rather, FSD can help a Tesla vehicle change lanes, park and navigate roads, but a driver needs to remain alert and behind the wheel even with the feature activated.

It's more advanced than Tesla's Autopilot feature, which includes cruise control-like features and auto steering but can't carry out more complex tasks like responding to traffic lights and stop signs.

(Tesla owners have to pay up to $199 extra per month for FSD.) Earlier this year, Musk mandated Tesla staff to "install and activate" FSD software for every new customer and to give a "short test ride."

Both Autopilot and FSD have hit road bumps, as California's Department of Motor Vehicles in 2022 accused Tesla of false advertising when promoting the features.

The Department of Justice later that year launched a criminal investigation into the company after more than a dozen crashes were recorded with Tesla vehicles engaging Autopilot software.

In December 2023, Tesla recalled more than 2 million vehicles over an Autopilot safety issue, adding a software update aimed at ensuring drivers pay attention to the road, even with the feature activated.

Still, Tesla has long pledged to build a fully self-driving car, with Musk earlier saying he was "highly confident" the car maker could achieve full autonomy in 2021.

(That, of course, did not happen.) In fact, Musk proposed the idea of a Tesla robotaxi fleet all the way back in 2019, saying the goal was to have 1 million robotaxis on the road testing without passengers by the end of 2020. (That, too, did not happen.)

Now, with the unveiling of the Robotaxi and Robovan, Musk touted both the potential time-saving and safety advantages of the autonomous vehicles, saying you could spend more time on your phone, watching a movie or doing work while traveling to your destination.

"It'll save lives, like a lot of lives, and prevent injuries," Musk said. "I think we'll see autonomous cars become 10 times safer than a human."

In addition to self-driving cars, Tesla also showed off developments on the Tesla Bot, which Musk said could do various tasks like babysit, mow the lawn, get your groceries and "just be your friend, serve drinks – whatever you can think of, it will do."

He says the bot will eventually cost $20,000 to $30,000. A livestream of the We, Robot event showed the humanoids standing behind a bar seemingly serving up drinks to attendees as the keynote wrapped up.

If Musk's timeline for getting fully autonomous cars on the road seems aggressive, it's because Tesla has got some catching up to do with other companies that have already hit the ground running.

Waymo, for instance, says it provides more than 100,000 trips each week across the handful of cities in which it operates.

In addition, the Alphabet-owned company will soon expand to more cities, including Austin and Atlanta, thanks to a partnership with Uber.

So for Tesla, the clock is ticking. Whether it actually meets those ambitious timelines, though, remains to be seen.

Resembling a Martian-like surface, this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image shows part of the Hardap region in south-central Namibia on the western edge of the Kalahari Desert.

Hardap is a hot and arid region, where groundwater is difficult to obtain. Its name reflects the importance of the Hardap Dam, Namibia’s second largest dam, visible in blue in the centre of the image.

The various blue hues denote the presence of sediment in the water.

With a surface area of 25 sq km, the dam supplies electricity and water to the whole area and the reservoir is home to numerous examples of Namibia’s wildlife.

The dam controls the flow of the Fish River, which can be seen snaking its way across the image. In this false-colour image, captured on 28 August 2024, the Copernicus Sentinel-2’s near-infrared channel was used to highlight vegetation in red, which appears mainly concentrated south of the dam along the river.

Agricultural fields can be spotted on the floodplain below the dam, where mainly vegetables and citrus fruits are grown.

The different shades of red show the state of the crops: the brighter the red, the healthier is the vegetation.

About 20 km southeast of the dam, on the eastern bank of the river, lies the town of Mariental, the region’s capital. Its urban environment can be seen as a blend of red and grey dots.

Near Mariental, the rocky plain of the Central Highland merges with the dry, sandy soil of the western limits of the Kalahari Desert.

The entire western Kalahari is characterised by long chains of sand dunes.

Some of these dunes can be seen in shades of yellow in the top-right corner and appear surprisingly parallel and uniform.

On the right side of the image, the landscape is dotted with dry lake beds known as salt pans, seen as gleaming white circles.

Roads can be identified as white lines cutting sharply across the landscape.

THE disappearance of Iran’s top military commander has sparked shock claims that he is the traitor behind Israel’s incredible cull of its terrorist enemies.

Brigadier General Esmail Qaani, 67, is the terror state’s most powerful military figure after legendary strongman Qasem Soleimani was assassinated by a US strike.

Qaani has not been heard of - even by his family - since an October 4 strike on a bunker in Beirut where he was believed to be meeting Hezbollah top brass.

But sources claimed today that Qaani was being interrogated while under house arrest -and was under suspicion of being Israel’s top spy.

Qaani was believed to have died alongside Hezbollah heir apparent Hashem Saffeieddine, 60, in last week’s bunker blast.

But sources in Lebanon, Iraq and Iran have since revealed was not at the meeting - and dodged another a week earlier in which Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was blitzed.

And his vanishing act was last night sparking consternation across Iran’s panicked military as rumours spread that he had turned on the evil Islamist regime.

Qaani leads Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard’s elite Quds Force and has been confirmed to be “alive and in good health” by the regime.

He is also being probed over the September 27 bunker buster assassination of Nasrallah, 64.

Nasrallah’s death sparked a desperate hunt for Israel’s mole by the Guard Corps - whose investigators are now said to suspect their own leader.

Israel has succeeded in wiping out dozens of enemy commanders across the region with intelligence led assassinations and its incredible pager and walkie-talkie bomb blitz.

They included Safieddine, who is believed to have been killed at a meeting of Hezbollah’s Shura Council in Beirut which Qanni was due to attend.

Within minutes of arriving, his bunker beneath tower blocks in southern Beirut was hammered by multiple strikes which demolished the neighbourhood.

Qaani was, at first, thought to have been killed or wounded but has since emerged that he pulled out of the meeting.

On Tuesday, Iraj Masjedi, deputy commander of the Quds Force and former Iranian ambassador to Baghdad said Qaani was “in good health and is carrying out his daily duties”.

The commander of an armed faction close to Iran said: “The Iranians have serious suspicions that the Israelis have infiltrated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, especially those working in the Lebanese arena, so everyone is currently under investigation.

“Nothing is certain at the moment. The investigations are still ongoing and all possibilities are open.”

Iran's probe into Nasrallah's death have also focused on the final movements of Quds force commander Brigadier General Abbas Nilforoushan, who died alongside the terror chief.

Nilforoushan had only just taken over from Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, who was killed in another Israeli strike on an Iranian consulate in Syrai in April.

Sources said Nasrallah had been outside Beirut’s southern suburbs the night before his killing, but returned to the area to meet with Nilforoushan in a secret operations room.

Nilforoushan, who had flown from Beirut from Tehran earlier, was taken directly from the plane to the bunker beneath in the Haret Hreik suburb.

‘Suspect’: Lawmakers ratchet up investigation into Soros radio station deal

(The Center Square) – Republican lawmakers on Monday ratcheted up the investigation into billionaire George Soros’ purchase of a wide swath of U.S. radio stations.

Soros is a major donor to Democratic and liberal causes whose purchase of American radio stations just before the election raised eyebrows and drew Congressional inquiry.

The deal began when the large radio company Audacy filed for bankruptcy. Via a complicated business deal, Soros gained control of the stations.

Notably, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers said in a release Monday that the deal would include "25% of the company being indirectly foreign owned,” something that normally would trigger Federal Communications Commission review.

However, that review was waived, fast tracking the deal.

Rodgers led the lawmakers in a letter to FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel demanding answers on the issue. That letter, which was signed by about 40 Republican lawmakers, is the latest Congressional scrutiny of Soros’ purchases.

“We write to better understand the recent decision made by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to waive its foreign ownership rules to fast track the purchase of more than 200 radio stations in the United States (U.S.) by a Fund backed by a Democrat mega-donor,” the letter said.

“This process seemed to deviate from the regular order with which the FCC has historically reviewed transactions under Section 310(b) of the Communications Act of 1934… and with this approval happening just before a Presidential election, the timing seems suspect,” the letter continued.

As The Center Square previously reported, House Oversight Chair Rep. James Comer, R-Ky. and Rep. Nick Langworthy, R-N.Y., sent a letter to Rosenworcel late last month raising similar concerns.

“Despite the unprecedented nature of this action, the FCC majority has apparently decided to approve licenses on an accelerated timeframe for a company in which George Soros has a major ownership stake, and with stations in 40 media markets reaching ‘more than 165 million Americans,’” the letter said.

“By all appearances, the FCC majority isn’t just expediting, but is bypassing an established process to do a favor for George Soros and facilitate his influence over hundreds of radio stations before the November election,” the letter added.

'It was 3 hours of magic': Spectacular auroras thrill stargazers across the world (and internet) as intense geomagnetic storm batters Earth

October 11, 2023

A geomagnetic storm supercharged Earth's auroras, or the northern lights overnight on Thursday (Oct. 10), with aurora watchers in the U.S. and across the globe on hand to capture the stunning light-show.

Not to be left out, Space.com's own crack team of aurora hunters (the A-Team?) were also out in the field to catch some incredible images.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), the geomagnetic storm resulted from Earth being struck by an eruption of charged particles or "plasma" that burst from the sun, more specifically sunspot AR 3848 in the evening of Tuesday (Oct. 8).

The plasma eruption from the solar flare, an example of a "coronal mass ejection" or "CME," traveled to Earth at speeds of 2.9 million mph (4.6 million kph).

That's about 2,000 times as fast as the top speed of a Lockheed Martin F-16 jet fighter.

Yet, even at these incredible speeds, the CME still took a few days to travel the 93 million miles (150 million km) between Earth and the sun.

When the CME struck Earth's magnetosphere, the resultant geomagnetic storm reached G4 levels on the SWPC's geomagnetic storm scale.

This is the second highest grade on the scale, which considers both severity and potential impacts.

NOAA stated on Thursday evening that the storms have the potential to reach extreme G5 levels.

While a common sight in Alaska and neighboring regions in the U.S. (as seen above) the G5 status of this geomagnetic storm ensured the Aurora Borealis was visible to many other Americans last night.

Space.com's own Josh Dinner was on hand to capture colorful images of the aurora over Griffey Lake in Bloomington, Indiana, on Thursday night at 10:10 pm EDT (0310 GMT).

"A small number of people began gathering along the levy walkway beside the Indiana reservoir shortly after sunset.

There was a faint pink glow as the twilight slipped to darkness, and then suddenly, the sky erupted with a vivid pink and green dance above our heads," Dinner explained.

"It only lasted a minute or so, but it could be seen with the naked eye. "I was absolutely mesmerized."

Rural areas weren't the only ones treated to auroral light shows. Skywatchers also caught images of the northern lights over some awe-inspiring man-made structures.

For example, the following image shows the aurora borealis manifesting over the Tappan Zee or Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge near New York City early Friday morning (Oct. 11).

The aurora was visible, albeit fainter over the entire skyline of New York City in another image captured early Friday morning.

Though visible only as a smear of color, the image shows the vast dome-like shape of the magnetosphere.

How farm animals survived Hurricane Milton: ‘Animals are smarter than… 1/2

As Hurricane Milton was fast-approaching, Sara Weldon and her husband, Rick Bass, made a decision: They would not leave their animals.

The couple — who live on a small farm in Clermont, Fla., between Tampa and Orlando — rode out the storm on their seven-acre property with their farm animals. They have 10 donkeys, nine cows, four goats, one cat, six dogs and about 100 chickens.

“We raised every animal since they were babies. They’re basically our children,” said Weldon.

The couple — whose home was not in a mandatory evacuation zone — knew it would have been safer for them to leave the state, they said, but they wouldn’t have been able to transport all their animals with them.

“We couldn’t move everybody, and there’s no way we would leave them,” she said. “We just made the decision we’re going to prepare and do everything we can to keep ourselves and our animals safe.”

Weldon posted about it on social media, and got a huge response.

“We’re not evacuating, and please don’t ask me to,” Weldon said in a tearful video, which has been viewed 4.2 million times. “We’re not leaving them.”

People around the world followed, anxiously watching for updates as the storm hit.

“Australians are crying with you, we wish we could bring you and your animals here so badly,” someone commented on Weldon’s TikTok.

“I pray for you from Germany! I can feel your pain” another person wrote.

Weldon — who got hundreds of offers from farm owners across the country to take in her animals — explained that the safest thing for most farm animals during a hurricane is to leave them outside rather than in a barn.

Weldon and her husband filled up their bathtubs in their home with water and bought plenty of supplies ahead of the storm. Outside, they secured all the fencing and stocked up on food for the animals. They kept their 8-month-old donkey indoors with them, as well as their baby chickens.

“Animals are smarter than us,” Weldon said in a phone interview with The Washington Post. “They instinctively know where to go to be safe.”

She and her husband saw that firsthand, when they went outside at 2:30 a.m. during the storm to check on the animals.

“Our pack of donkeys were huddled together,” Weldon said. “They huddle together to be a break in the wind. It’s really cool.”

Still, “I went to bed not knowing if I would see them again,” she said.

Social media accounts like Weldon’s went viral as followers worried about the survival of farm animals across Florida — including Graci Lovering’s horse and 10 cows. She posted a TikTok of her painting names and phone numbers (using an All-Weather Paintstik) on her animals in case the fence surrounding the property was damaged and the animals escaped. It got more than 26 million views.

Lovering and her family decided not to leave their 32-acre property in Lakeland, Fla. They, too, stayed close to the animals, as their home was also not in a mandatory evacuation zone.

“The animals are safest out in the pasture because if they were in the barn, they could get trapped or hit with a fallen tree,” Lovering said. “Out in the pasture, they can run from debris and fallen trees. These animals know what to do. They put their backs to the wind and stand in a line.”

Strangers were still concerned.

Many other Hurricane Milton animal videos spread far and wide online, including one of a trio of goats wearing life jackets, which has nearly 4 million views.

“Thousands upon thousands of strangers were sending us messages of love and prayers,” said Weldon. “It was so comforting.”

Weldon and her husband started rescuing donkeys during the pandemic, and they have plans to move to Tennessee to start a donkey sanctuary in the next few months.

“They’re such amazing animals,” Weldon said.

After the storm passed, Weldon and her husband — along with millions of people on social media — were relieved.

“Everyone is amazingly okay,” Weldon said, adding that her property is filled with debris and floodwater, and they have no cell service or power. “Compared to what I’m sure others experienced near the coast, this is nothing. We got lucky.”

Lovering also gave people a much-anticipated updateon TikTok that all her animals were okay.

“I feel like an animal social worker checking on all the animals today,” someone commented.

“You were on my check-on list today. I’m so happy to hear you, your family and all your babies are all safe,” wrote another follower.

Many said they were moved to tears.

Victori Koepsell also got an enormous swell of support after she shared an update on her four horses.

“They’re more than just horses to me; they’re family,” said Koepsell, who lives in Central Florida, about 50 minutes outside Orlando. “Milton hit us directly, and it felt like nothing in its path was safe.”

Koepsell, who was not in a mandatory evacuation zone, decided to let her horses roam in the open pasture. She said she did what she could to fortify her home, but she was more focused on the animals.

“I was terrified all night, but I knew it was the best chance they had,” she said. “I didn’t know if I would wake up to find them all alive.”

After the storm passed, Koepsell rushed to her barn, her heart racing. One by one, her horses came to greet her, and they all surrounded her in a circle.

“It’s moments like that where the bond between you and your animals is undeniable,” she said.

Koepsell said she was deeply touched by how many people cared.

“The support and the warmth from total strangers has brought me an unexpected peace,” she said. “It’s amazing what love can do to the soul, even when it’s from people you’ve never met.”

What it is: An ancient stone circle in the Egyptian desert that may be the oldest known astronomical observatory

Where it is from: An desert area of southern Egypt, about 175 miles (280 kilometers) southwest of Aswan, that was once inhabited by the ancient Nubians.

When it was made: About 7,500 years ago

What it tells us about the past: Nabta Playa, which is 2,000 years older than Stonehenge, may have been one of the earliest astronomical observatories.

Today, its main stones are in a museum in Aswan to protect them from vandalism.

But originally, Nabta Playa consisted of dozens of upright stones, each a few feet high, in the desert about 60 miles (100 km) west of the Nile.

In addition to a pile of stones above a central tomb, many of the stones seemed to have been deliberately placed in a circle to align with the rising of certain stars.

The circle's six inner stones may have been used in rituals or to mark important alignments.

These inner stones were surrounded by 29 standing stones that some researchers think formed a primitive calendar.

Excavations of the central tomb in 2001 uncovered no human remains but revealed the complete skeleton of a cow.

Along with other evidence, that suggests Nabta Playa was built by ancient people who depended on driving herds of cattle between seasonal lakes.

The researchers suggested that distinctive stones in the calendar circle may have indicated sunrise on the summer solstice, which was a signal for these Stone Age people to soon expect rainfall that would replenish the lakes.

It's also been proposed that three of the central stones represented the "belt" of Orion and that some of the stones marked seasonal risings of the bright stars Arcturus, Sirius and Alpha Centauri.
