"Antony Blinken traveled to China this week to warn Beijing about sanctions for supplying military technology to Russia, according to the Financial Times and Bloomberg in their previews of the US secretary of state’s visit.

They didn’t specify which sanctions might follow, although FT sources suggested that financial and other institutions in China could face restrictions. Meanwhile, the Izvestia newspaper has revealed that several Chinese banks, including the largest, ICBC, are already not accepting payments in yuan from Russia, for fear of secondary sanctions. Almost 80% of payments to China have been returned, the newspaper claimed.

Washington is apparently convinced that China’s support for the Russian defense industry, although not publicized, is genuine and that this is having a significant impact on the course of the Ukraine conflict.

Even with all this in mind, it was hard to imagine that Blinken would communicate in the language of threats and ultimatums. The first experience of this type of rhetoric between the administration of US President Joe Biden and the Chinese showed that hard and fast pressure does not work with the current leadership in Beijing.

In fact, it has the opposite effect. Proof of this was the failed meeting in Alaska in March 2021, when Blinken and National Security adviser Jake Sullivan tried to pressure their Chinese counterparts, only to be met with a harsh rebuke – and a public one at that – which was a far cry from the spirit of Beijing’s traditionally restrained diplomacy.

Blinken subsequently adopted a much more subtle game. He likely tried to drive a wedge between Moscow and Beijing by exploiting the fact that China’s peace initiatives to resolve the Ukraine conflict do not match the maximalist demands of Russian officials (at least in public).

That may not have worked, considering that the Chinese openly stated on Friday that NATO was responsible for the Ukraine crisis.

Beijing is calling for a cessation of hostilities, in effect a freezing of the conflict, but has made no mention of Ukraine’s demilitarization, denazification,or regime change in Kiev.

Recently, there have been signals that could be interpreted as a willingness by Beijing to distance itself from Moscow.

Specifically, an article in The Economist by Feng Yujun, a professor at Peking University, has caused a stir. This methodical, official expert on Russia and the Ukraine conflict speaks very much in the spirit of Western political thought: he criticizes Moscow, predicts its defeat, praises Kiev for its “strength and unity of its resistance,” and even suggests that if Russia doesn’t change its power structure, it will continue to threaten international security by provoking wars.

Knowing how Chinese society is organized, it’s hard to imagine that the professor who penned this article was acting at his own risk without the support of responsible comrades in Beijing. The recent refusal of four major Chinese banks to accept payments from Russia, even in yuan, can also be seen as an alarming signal to Moscow. In other words, it may turn out that the Russian-Chinese alliance, so strong in words, is far from being effective and trouble-free in practice. And Blinken would certainly have tried to consolidate this trend.

There is a problem, however: the overall context of US-China relations doesn’t make it any easier for Washington.

The package of military aid to Taiwan recently passed by the US Congress certainly doesn’t create a favorable emotional background for the delicate negotiations that Blinken tried to conduct in Beijing. Washington’s efforts to create anti-Chinese military and political alliances in the region – from the Philippines to Australia, from India and Vietnam to Japan – also aren’t conducive to mutual understanding between the two superpowers. American strategists make no secret of the fact that the main, most dangerous and most principled geopolitical opponent of the United States is not Russia, but China.

If that’s the case, what’s the point of Beijing meeting Washington’s demands and joining its pressure on Moscow? Only so that later, when the US achieves its goals in Russia, Beijing will have to confront it alone? This is hardly in the plans of Comrade Xi and his team.

Zelensky Reveals U.S. and Ukraine ‘Working’ on Scheme for 10 Years of Military Aid

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that the United States and Ukrainian governments are “working on a bilateral security agreement” that would result in sending additional monetary aid to Ukraine over the next ten years.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Zelensky noted he had spoken to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) thanking “him and all the congressmen for their support” of Ukraine and for voting to send a $61 billion aid package out of a $95 billion foreign aid package.

Zelensky added that during his conversation with Jeffries, he had “emphasized the need for Patriot systems.”

This is not the first time Zelensky has begged for more American-made Patriot missile systems to be sent to Ukraine.

Currently, Ukraine has three Patriot systems, one from the U.S. and two reportedly from Germany, according to the Washington Post.

On Friday, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin revealed that the U.S. would be sending Ukraine more Patriot systems as part of an additional $6 billion foreign aid package.

“Also, our teams, Ukraine and the United States, are currently working on a bilateral security agreement, and we are already working on a specific text. Our goal is to make this agreement the strongest of all. We are discussing the specific foundations of our security and cooperation,” Zelensky said. “We are also working on fixing specific levels of support for this year and for the next ten years, including armed support, financial, political, and joint arms production. The agreement should be truly exemplary and reflect the strength of American leadership. I am grateful to both our team and the team of the American side for the progress in drafting the agreement.”

On top of the $61 billion in foreign aid recently approved by the United States, United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak vowed to send an additional £500 million in foreign aid to Ukraine.

Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP): Available Funding and Other Information

The numerous SJP branches on university campuses are not registered as 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Therefore, they are not subject to laws requiring financial disclosure. Most known funding for individual branches of SJP comes from funds distributed by student governments for student clubs, but this does not match the scope of activities.1 In addition, the National SJP coordination framework (also not an registered as 501c3) receives funds from a number of donors, as detailed below.

SJP Founder Hatem Bazian (lecturer at University of California, Berkeley) is also the co-founder of American Muslims for Palestine (AMP). According to AMP, “We also work in broad-based coalitions and support campus activism through Students for Justice in Palestine.”

AMP is incorporated in the State of Illinois, but is not a 501(c) (3) tax-exempt organization. Americans for Justice in Palestine Educational Foundation (AJP) acts as its “fiscal sponsor” to facilitate tax-exemption donations.

On October 31, 2023, the Attorney General’s Office of Virginia announced an investigation into AMP, stating that there is “reason to believe that the organization may be soliciting contributions … without first having registered…. In addition, the Attorney General will investigate allegations that the organization may have used funds raised for impermissible purposes under state law, including benefitting or providing support to terrorist organizations.”

Little is known about donors to AJP, which reported $1.7 million in income and $1.2 million in expenses in 2021. Public records show that at least a small percentage is channeled through large donor-advised charities such as Network for Good, Fidelity Investments Charitable, and United Hands Relief.

In 2022, AMP received $1,000 from the AFR Foundation, a “private foundation located in Southfield, MI that primarily funds charity and education,” and run by Mostafa Afr. According to the Middle East Forum, “Almost 50 private Islamic grant-making foundations with Islamist ties, along with a scattering of radical charities, have specifically registered their offices to…Afr’s office in Southfield,” including the Muslim American Youth Association, which, according to the FBI, has “played pivotal roles in building [the Palestinian terrorist group] Hamas’s infrastructure in the United States.”

In 2001, the U.S. Treasury designated the Texas-based Holy Land Foundation (HLF) as a source for financing the Hamas terror organization. A number of HLF officials were employed by AMP and/or appointed as board members.2

WESPAC Foundation, a Westchester, New York-based organization, serves as the fiscal sponsor for National SJP.

In FY 2021-22, WESPAC’s total income and expenses were $1.1 million.

WESPAC’s sources of income are mostly unknown. Public records reveal a handful of foundational donors, including from large donor-advised charities that further obscure the original donors (see table below).

WESPAC Foundation also serves as fiscal sponsor for U.S. Palestinian Community Network (USPCN), Adalah-NY, and the Palestinian Youth Movement USA.

In 2022, the National SJP received $20,000 from the Sparkplug Foundation (New York) for two projects related to creating a “Students for Justice in Palestine National Network” and to “restructure the student movement to include a representative decision-making body, regional and national communication networks, and shared resources, unifying SJPs across North America for the first time.”

SJP has received funding from the Cultures of Resistance Network and the Peace Development Fund. It is unclear how much they have received.

Europeans won’t ‘die for Donbass’ – EU’s Borrell

The bloc is committed to assisting Ukraine but doesn’t want to send its people to the battlefield, its foreign policy chief says

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has insisted that member states don’t want their citizens to die in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, but that the bloc will keep supporting Kiev with military and financial aid.

Since the beginning of the conflict, the EU has provided Kiev with as much as €100 billion ($107 billion) in financial, military, humanitarian and refugee assistance. Brussels has also mulled the idea of tapping income generated by Russia’s frozen central bank reserves for Kiev, but no consensus within the EU or with allies has so far been reached on the issue.

“Europeans will not go to die for the Donbass, but we could avoid that Ukrainians have to die for the Donbass longer,” Borrell said on Sunday while speaking at a panel session of a two-day meeting of the World Economic Forum in Riyadh.

=The bloc’s top diplomat admitted that the issue of allocating funds for Kiev is “difficult,” but stressed that Brussels pledged to help the nation in its war effort against Russia.

“Many people could say ‘well how long do we have to spend so much money’ but we committed to support Ukraine […] We have to continue supporting Ukraine and Ukrainians, enable [them] to resist,” he added.

In March, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Western militaries have long had boots on the ground in Ukraine and that they have grown in numbers since the Western-backed coup in Kiev in 2014. These comments came shortly after French President Emmanuel Macron said that he “cannot exclude” the possibility of soldiers from the US-led military bloc being sent to aid Kiev. However, this sparked a wave of denials from senior officials of NATO member states.

Putin also said last year that the West is prepared to fight Russia to “the last Ukrainian.”

Meanwhile, controversy about Ukraine aid spending has been mounting within the EU. In February, the bloc approved another package of €50 billion ($54 billion) to support the Ukrainian economy after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban dropped his veto threat due to warnings of economic retribution from other EU heads of state.Budapest argued that Ukraine is not able defeat Russian forcesand that the sanctions imposed on Russia over the conflict have caused more harm to the bloc’s members than to Moscow.

In November, Slovakia overturned plans to donate rockets and ammunition to Ukraine approved by the previous government as the country’s newly appointed Prime Minister Robert Fico sharply criticized military support for Ukraine along with sanctions on Russia. He has advocated for immediate peace talks.

Violence erupts at Georgian ‘foreign agents’ bill protest(VIDEOS)

Tbilisi’s attempt to crack down on NGOs has enraged the opposition and drawn criticism from the West

Thousands of people took to the streets of the Georgian capital, Tbilisi on Sunday in opposition to abill that would require all NGOs and other entities receiving funding from abroad to register as ‘foreign agents’ and report their activities to the authorities.

Earlier this month, the legislation, officially known as the bill ‘On the Transparency of Foreign Influence’, was approved by the parliament in its first reading. Opposition parties and rights groups called for mass protests against its expected passage, with the latest mass rally held on Sunday, ahead of the second reading next week.

The crowd marched through Shota Rustaveli Avenue in central Tbilisi with a large banner reading, “Yes – Europe,” and gathered in front of the parliament building in Republic Square waving Georgian, EU, and Ukrainian flags.

The situation escalated when a group of protesters tried to break through the barriers surrounding the government building, prompting riot police to use pepper spray. The authorities urged the protesters to maintain public order, saying that law enforcement units were mobilized to protect the “safety of citizens.”

“The protest… took on a violent manner. Participants of the rally verbally and physically confront the law enforcement officers at the site.Despite appeals made by police, activists attempted to break through the police cordon multiple times,” the Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a brief statement, adding that “to restore order, police administered special means established by law.”

The parliament, which is controlled by the Georgian Dream party, first attempted to introduce the law in March 2023, but backed down after two nights of violent protests. The original bill would have required organizations and individuals with more than 20% foreign funding to register as ‘agents of foreign influence’ and disclose their donors.

The opposition branded it a “Russian law” and accused the ruling party of modeling it on legislation introduced by Moscow in 2012.

The ruling party argued that it actually drew inspiration from the much harsher US Foreign Agents Registration Act of 1938, and insisted that the law is needed to combat “pseudo-liberal values” promoted by foreigners.

The new version of the legislation includes slight changes, including the designation of ‘agents of foreign influence’ being replaced with ‘an organization facilitating the interests of a foreign power’.

While the opposition says the legislation would jeopardize Georgia’s bid to join the EU, which granted Georgia candidacy status in December last year, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze insists that the bill would bring Georgia closer to the EU by making the country more transparent. President Salome Zourabichvili vowed to veto the bill if it passes the second and third readings.
