Kiev mulls creating penal units

Convicts could be used for manual labor such as building defense fortifications, Justice Minister Denis Malyuska says

Ukraine could create special units for convicts who are willing to join the military, Justice Minister Denis Malyuska has said. The minister previously suggested thatthose who had been sentenced for murder could make for more effective soldiersthan ordinary mobilized citizens.

His comments came after the Ukrainian parliament earlier this month passed in the first reading a bill allowing certain categories of convicts to be drafted into the military in exchange for a pardon.

However, those convicted of crimes against national security, or of murdering two or more people or rape and pedophilia are not eligible.

Speaking on national TV on Saturday, Malyuska explained that the bill envisages not only “contract form of service, but also the creation ofseparate units where those who have been released from prison would serve.”

According to the minister, one of Kiev’s main goals is to create a level playing field for all so that those released from prison do not end up shirking their military service somewhere far from the front.

Malyuska also noted that convicts could perform tasks not related to actual combat. “The modern army is not only about shooting a gun. There is a lot of physical work that does not require the use of weapons 24/7. I think that such units can build infrastructure, field and defense works.”

He also previously argued that those convicts “who know how to kill would be more effective as soldiers” and suggested that, for example,they would be more reliable than robbers if given a gun. He also emphasized that convicts would be used either on the front or somewhere close to it.

Malyuska also admitted at the time that drafting criminalswould also help alleviate pressure on the country’s crowded prisons.

Ukraine’s campaign to call up convicts to service comes as part of its push to replenish battlefield losses. In late February, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu claimed that Ukraine’s forces had suffered more than 444,000 losses since the conflict began in February 2022. Earlier this month, he said Kiev had lost more than 80,000 service members this year alone.

Earlier this month, Zelensky also signed two laws, one that lowers the age of conscription for men from 27 to 25 and one that significantly tightens mobilization rules.

Q has eluded to soft disclosure in movies in a prior drop. I think one of those is the Star Trek: Picard series. Here is Season 2's final episode titled "Farewell" released on May 5th, 2022 coincidentally. 5:5? What caught my eye is that they were literally showing the Saturn Polar Configuration and a portal, with an 8-pointed star in the center (represented by the Borg ship).

This is all representative in the portal shot, but what makes this confirmed is not only that the Borg have an 8-pointed star-like ship, but that there is a glow in the center as well… matching the circumpunct as well as the shadow creating the keyhole image.

This Borg is different than the original Borg (whos ship was a large cube). This one was created when Q put Picard and team into an alternate timeline created from a singular change in the Europa mission undertaken in 2024. It is becoming increasingly clear that the cabal has been searching for ways to recreate the connection to God, the feeling of one-ness, and with technology (suppressed to the public) they have created a literal hive mind. In ancient history Saturn was the actual sun of the Earth. The Saturn Polar Configuration was thought to open a portal to the heavens. The pillar was said to be the 'stairway to heaven'. When a second woman came forward a year later with a nearly identical story of sexual impropriety involving the Democratic attorney general of New York, Gleason says he again bit back his instinct to report the matter to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

Instead, according to the letter, he went to Donald Trump by way of veteran New York Post columnist Stephen Dunleavy. The letter does not explicitly state the timeline of these events, but Schneiderman had brought a lawsuit against Trump in 2013 that accused the real estate mogul of defrauding customers of his seminar series Trump University.

Trump fired back week later on Twitter: “Weiner is gone, Spitzer is gone — next will be lightweight A.G. Eric Schneiderman. Is he a crook? Wait and see, worse than Spitzer or Weiner.” Gleason told the Times Friday that Trump’s cryptic attack, with references to scandal-plagued New York politicos, was directly prompted by his conversation with Mr. Cohen.

The Post quoted Dunleavy meanwhile as confirming that Gleason told him about the women. Whereas Gleason says Dunleavy offered to discuss the Schneiderman case with Trump, however, the veteran Murdoch reporter has reportedly denied talking to Trump.

Gleason says he received a phone call from Trump’s longtime personal attorney, Cohen, shortly thereafter. “During my communications with Mr. Cohen I shared with him certain details of Schneiderman’s vile attacks on these two women,” the letter states.

The letter closes with an unexpected dig at Michael Avenatti, the attorney who represents Trump accuser Stormy Daniels. Citing the letter Cohen wrote to Judge Wood on May 9, Gleason said it “raises concerns of what appears to be reckless behavior on the part of Mr. Avenatti, particularly in the event his client should be given leave to intervene.”

Avenatti’s report about Cohen, who is the focus of a months-long criminal probe here, appeared on Schneiderman’s last day in office.

Two Japanese navy helicopters crash south of Tokyo during night-time training flight after 'colliding into each other' - with one crew member dead and seven others missing

Two Japanese navy helicopters carrying eight crew members crashed in the Pacific Ocean south of Tokyo during a night-time training flight after possibly colliding with each other, the country's defence minister said on Sunday.

One crew member who was recovered from the water was later pronounced dead, while rescuers were searching for seven others who were still missing.

The two SH-60K aircraft from the Maritime Self-Defence Force were carrying four crew each and lost contact near Torishima island, about 370 miles south of Tokyo, late on Saturday, Defence Minister Minoru Kihara told reporters.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known, but officials believe it is 'highly likely' the two helicopters collided with each other before crashing into the water, Mr Kihara said.

He added that his ministry will suspend training flights for all SH-60s for now.

The navy chief of staff, Admiral Ryo Sakai, said the training will be suspended until the cause of the accident cause is determined and preventive measures are adopted.

Rescuers have recovered a flight data recorder, a blade from each helicopter, and fragments believed to be from both aircraft in the same area, signs that the two SH-60Ks were flying close to each other, Mr Kihara said.

Officials will analyse the flight data to try to determine what led to the crash.

Search and rescue efforts for the missing crew were expanded on Sunday, with the MSDF and Air Self-Defence Force together deploying 12 warships and seven aircraft. Japan Coast Guard patrol boats and aircraft also joined the operation.

The helicopters, twin-engine, multi-mission aircraft developed by Sikorsky and known as Seahawks, were modified and produced in Japan by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. They were on night-time anti-submarine training, Mr Kihara said.

One lost contact at 10.38pm local time and sent an automatic emergency signal a minute later. They lost contact about 150 nautical miles (270km) east of Torishima island.

Only one distress call was heard - another sign that the two helicopters were near the same place, because their signals use the same frequency and could not be differentiated, Mr Kihara said.

One helicopter belonged to an air base in Nagasaki, and the other to a base in Tokushima prefecture.

The SH-60K aircraft is usually deployed on destroyers for anti-submarine warfare, but is also used for search and rescue and other missions. Japan has about 70 of the modified helicopters.

Saturday's training only involved the Japanese navy and was not part of a multinational exercise, defence officials said. They said no foreign aircraft or warships were spotted in the area.

Japan, under its 2022 security strategy, has been accelerating its military build-up and fortifying deterrence in the south-western Japanese islands in the Pacific and East China Sea to counter threats from China's increasingly assertive military activities.

In recent years, Japan has conducted its own extensive naval exercises as well as joint drills with its ally the United States and other partners.

The navy chief of staff said Saturday's training was part of routine anti-submarine warfare drills involving MSDF warships, submarines and Seahawks.

The crash comes a year after a Ground Self-Defence Force UH-60 Blackhawk crashed off the south-western Japanese island of Miyako, due to an engine output problem known as 'rollback', killing all 10 crew members, which shocked the nation.

In 2017, a Japanese navy SH-60J, an earlier generation Seahawk, crashed during a night-time training flight off Aomori due to human error.

Saturday's crash and possible collision also recalled an incident during night-time training off the southern island of Amamioshima in July 2021, when two SH-60s had a minor collision, both suffering blade damage, but causing no injuries.

Following that collision, the MSDF introduced a set of preventive measures. Admiral Sakai said Saturday's crash could have been prevented if all those measures were adequately followed.

In the US, a fatal crash of an MH-60S Seahawk during training off California in 2021 was attributed to mechanical failure from unsuspected damage during maintenance, according to the navy.

Japan's NHK public television said no weather advisories were issued in the area at the time of Saturday's crash.

15 people suffer minor injuries in tram accident at Universal Studios theme park in Los Angeles

A tram accident at Universal Studios Hollywood in Los Angeles injured 15 people Saturday night, authorities and the company said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department units were dispatched to the theme park on Lankershim Boulevard shortly after 9 p.m., the department said in a social media post.

The victims taken to area hospitals had minor injuries, the department said.

A Universal Studios Hollywood spokesperson emailed a statement to The Associated Press confirming there were “multiple minor injuries” from an accident involving a tram at the theme park.

The details of the accident were not immediately available.

The California Highway Patrol will lead the investigation, the fire department said.
