'US Troops on islands in the Taiwan Strait' is appearing on a couple of sources tonight.

Taiwanese Defense Chief Chiu Kuo-cheng officially confirmed it when asked about the presence of the US Army Special Forces.

This revelation has the potential to escalate tensions with China.

Daily Express US reported:

“[The admission] comes after Secretary of State Antony Blinken this week issued an ‘ironclad’ warning to China as tensions between the two nations rise.”

Former President Tsai Ing-wen had already mentioned in passing three years ago ‘occasional training sessions with US instructors’, but Chiu’s recent statement is the first official confirmation of the permanent nature of these activities.

“According to reports from Taiwan’s United Daily News (UDN), US Army Green Berets from the 1st Special Forces Group are now permanently stationed at bases of the 101st Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion, a Taiwanese army special operations force, located in outlying island counties of Penghu and Kinmen. Notably, Kinmen lies just over a mile from Chinese shores.

Additionally, reports suggest an American military presence in the northeast city of Taoyuan on Taiwan’s main island, with service members providing specialized training on drone equipment for Taiwan’s elite Airborne Special Service Company.”

The U.S. Army Green Berets from the 1st Special Forces Group were sent to the outlying island counties of Penghu and also Kinmen, just a mile away from Chinese territory.

“The 1st Battalion of this Pacific-oriented Special Forces Group is forward-deployed in Okinawa, Japan, while the rest of the battalion is stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.

The U.S. has maintained no official military presence in Taiwan since it pulled out in 1979 following the normalization of U.S.-China relations.

Badass 'Vigilantes' Show Up Evict Squatters At NY House Where Homeowner Arrested

A pair of vigilantes showed up to a house in Queens, New York where the homeowner was recently arrested for changing the locks on her own house in order to try and evict squatters.

On Tuesday afternoon, two unidentified men driving a black pickup truck pulled into the driveway of the Flushing home in search of the squatters.

"We are looking to get this guy out," one of the men told the Daily Mail. "I am here to talk to him. I want to see why he is here."

How many Westerners are fighting in Ukraine?

There may be more foreign boots on the ground — troops and mercenaries — than you think

Global Affairs Canada announced this week that a Canadian had died in Ukraine. Later reporting revealed that his name was Jean-Francois Ratelle and that he was a commander of the Norman Brigade, which, according to CTV News, is “a fighting force of volunteers from several different countries commanded by a CAF veteran who goes by ‘Hrulf.’”

Hrulf was Ratell’s call sign. But the news raises an important, and hard to answer question: How many Canadians, and indeed citizens of other Western countries, are there fighting the Russians in Ukraine?

The Canadian government says it does not track this figure, but in January 2023, the Ukrainian Foreign Legion said that Canadians were “one of the most numerous nationalities" fighting in Ukraine. CTV News says it was able to track “at least 18 Canadians who are, or were, in Ukraine as fighters or as part of humanitarian efforts.”

On May 1, 2023, two Canadians serving with Ukraine's International Legion, which was attached to the 92nd Mechanised Brigade, were killed in Bakhmut. Both had served in the Canadian Armed Forces, but had left before going to Ukraine. At the time, CBC News reported that they were the fourth and fifth Canadians to be killed fighting in Ukraine. By November, the Globe and Mail was reporting that nine Canadians had been killed.

Like other countries in the West, the Canadian government did not send those fighters. One of the Canadians who perished was “fighting alongside two U.S. citizens who also died while fighting in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.”

A March 14 update on the number of foreign mercenaries provided by the Russian Defense Ministry, which has an interest in muddying the waters on these figures, claims that 1,005 Canadian mercenaries have gone to Ukraine to fight. It claims that at least 491 of them — nearly half — have been killed.

And Canada is not number one on that list. According to the Russian update, 2,960 mercenaries have come from Poland with 1,497 of them reportedly killed. Number two is the U.S. with at least 491 of its 1,113 mercenaries killed. The update says that mercenary fighters have come from NATO members Romania and the U.K., while France has been the source of fewer: 147 French nationals have died out of 356 who have gone, according to Russia.

Science Committee Passes Eight Bipartisan Bills

March 20, 2024

(Washington, DC) – Today, the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology passed eight bipartisan bills at a full committee markup. The legislation considered spanned various sectors, from space and energy to research and technology.

“Today’s markup reflects our committee’s continuous bipartisan efforts to strengthen our world-class scientific enterprise,” Chairman Frank Lucas said. “Our four space bills will improve NASA’s current protocols and expand partnerships and resources to maintain our global leadership in space. Bill details:

H.R. 272 - ASTRO Act

Provides for transportation of government astronauts after they return to Earth. Currently, the NASA Administrator must approve each astronaut’s ground transportation until they are medically cleared to drive.

H.R. 6219 - ASCEND Act

Directs the NASA Administrator to establish a commercial satellite data acquisition program with NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. The bill allows the Administrator to procure Earth remote sensing data from commercial providers to help fulfill the agency’s need. Additionally, the bill requires the Administrator to submit a report to Congress about the commercial agreements signed by the Administrator.

H.R. 7687 - NASA Streamlining Partnerships

Allows NASA to receive funds from other federal agencies for scientific or engineering research and education. These funds will be limited to the awarding of grants or cooperative agreements. The bill requires NASA to report to Congress on the amount of funds transferred to NASA and how those funds were utilized.

H.R. 4152 – Space Resources Institute Act

Directs the NASA Administrator and the Secretary of Commerce to submit a report to Congress on the merits and feasibility of establishing either a virtual or physical space resources institute. The bill directs the Secretary and Administrator to identify risks and encourage the distribution of space resources. Additionally, the bill directs the Administrator and Secretary to explore the potential benefits of partnering with institutes of higher education and industry.

H.R. 7630 - ANCHOR Act

Improves cyberinfrastructure and communication capabilities of the U.S. Academic Research Fleet and provides necessary updates to safeguard oceanographic research in remote locations. Research vessels extend America's ability to make observations and conduct scientific research globally and require reliable and secure digital networking and communications for effective scientific practices.

H.R. 7686 - To Clarify the Definition of Foreign Country for Purposes of Malign Foreign Talent Recruitment:

Updates the definition of “malign foreign talent recruitment programs” included in the CHIPS and Science Act to provide clarity to our federal research agencies and universities as they identify and address threats to our scientific research enterprise.

H.R. 7073 – Next Generation Pipelines Research and Development Act

Improves public-private partnerships and increases federal research, development, and demonstration related to the evolution of next-generation pipeline systems.

H.R. 7685 - IMPACT Act

Strengthens and enhances the competitiveness of American industry through the research and development of advanced technologies to improve the efficiency of cement, concrete, and asphalt production.
