Appeals Court Reinstates Hold On Texas Immigration Law

A federal appeals court issued an order late on Tuesday that reinstates a hold blocking Texas from enforcing a law that enables local law enforcement to arrest suspected illegal immigrants.

This decision came from a three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, voting 2-1 to overturn a previous ruling made by another panel of the same court that granted an administrative stay of the law’s implementation.

Two vigilantes have showed up to evict three brazen squatters who are living at a New York City home after its owner was arrested after she tried to remove them.

Adele Andaloro inherited her family's home, located in Flushing, Queens, but she was left aghast when squatters moved into her childhood home last month.

Andaloro confronted the squatters herself - and was subsequently arrested when one of the men inside called the police on her for changing the locks.

The furious homeowner, who had been in the process of selling the home, said: 'I'm really fearful that these people are going to get away with stealing my home.'

She also shared her fear that by the time authorities look into the matter, it may be more than 30 days since they moved in. Crucially, squatters in New York have rights after occupying a residence for more than a month.

According to neighbors, the unruly squatters have been seen and heard carrying out home renovations inside the Queens property.

On Tuesday afternoon, two men pulled their black truck into the driveway of Andaloro's home looking for the brazen occupants.

'We are looking to get this guy out,' said the unidentified man, who appeared agitated and was dressed in a black 'Trump' t-shirt. He said: 'I am here to talk to him.

'I want to see why he is here.'

One of the neighbors on the block, who saw what transpired, said 'holy c**p,' and said she had no idea that the squatter issue was causing so much backlash.

Many of the neighbors are baffled by the ordeal - and say they want to know how the squatters gained access into the house in the first place.

'It's disgusting,' one person said, who mentioned that he has seen one of the squatters walking around outside.

According to locals, Andaloro was living in the house with her daughter and mom.

When her mother passed away a few years ago, she stayed in the house and rented out the basement to an older man and his dog, who was said to be a beloved member of the community.

When the man moved out of state, Andaloro put the house on the market.

The two-storey home that sits on a quiet street in the Whitestone- Flushing border estimated value on is more than $1.2 million, according to Homes.com.

A woman who appeared to be living in the home would not answer the door after several attempts were made, but earlier in the day told a source that she doesn't know what is going on and said that she is a roommate in the home.

The same woman hours later had ordered take-out that was delivered to the home around 6.30pm.

She opened the door to pay for the order, but soon slammed it shut soon after.

US Warns of Cyberattacks Against Water Systems Throughout Nation

The Biden administration is warning states to be on guard for cyberattacks against water systems, citing ongoing threats from hackers linked to the governments of Iran and China. “Disabling cyberattacks are striking water and wastewater systems throughout the United States,” Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan wrote in a letter to governors made public Tuesday. “These attacks have the potential to disrupt the critical lifeline of clean and safe drinking water, as well as impose significant costs on affected communities.”

Hackers affiliated with the Iranian Government Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have attacked drinking water systems, while a People’s Republic of China state-sponsored group, Volt Typhoon, has compromised information technology of drinking water and other critical infrastructure systems, the letter warned.

“Federal departments and agencies assess with high confidence that Volt Typhoon actors are pre-positioning themselves to disrupt critical infrastructure operations in the event of geopolitical tensions and/or military conflicts,” said the letter.

The water system is an especially vulnerable part of US infrastructure, fraught with weak controls, insufficient funding and staffing shortages. The EPA is the lead federal agency for ensuring the nation’s water sector is resilient to all threats and hazards.

In late November, an Iranian-backed hacking group attacked Israeli-made digital controls commonly used in the water and wastewater industries in the US, affecting multiple organizations across several states, Bloomberg News previously reported. While the incidents didn’t interfere with water quality or supplies, they highlighted contentious talks between the US government and municipal water associations over how best to protect the water supply.

“Drinking water and wastewater systems are an attractive target for cyberattacks because they are a lifeline critical infrastructure sector but often lack the resources and technical capacity to adopt rigorous cybersecurity practices,” said the letter, which invited state officials to a meeting Thursday to discuss the threat. “In many cases, even basic cybersecurity precautions — such as resetting default passwords or updating software to address known vulnerabilities — are not in place and can mean the difference between business as usual and a disruptive cyberattack.”

The Serbian parliament has voted overwhelmingly to oust Vuk Obradovic from the post of deputy prime minister following sexual harassment charges by female members of his party.

The minister had denied the claims, insisting that he was the victim of a conspiracy to remove him from a state anti-corruption board.

The vote in parliament was held after Mr Obradovic refused to step down when the allegations first surfaced a month ago.

At the time, a no-confidence vote by coalition party leaders went against him, but he clung on.

In Monday's vote, Mr Obradovic was fired by 142 votes to 20.

Despite losing his position as deputy prime minister, Mr Obradovic retains his parliamentary seat. But he also faces a law suit claiming that he cannot hold on to his job as party president.

Both Mr Obradovic and his former party colleagues have begun legal proceedings against each other.

Preserving integrity

Serbia's Prime Minister, Zoran Djindjic, dismissed claims of conspiracy against Mr Obradovic, and said that the government's main concern was to preserve its integrity.

"I have no objections regarding Obradovic's work… but no deputy prime minister anywhere in the world would give the opposition an opportunity to discredit the government because of an alleged sex scandal," Mr Djindjic said.

Mr Obradovic had been appointed earlier this year to investigate allegations of widespread corruption and abuse of power by the regime of former President Slobodan Milosevic.

Mr Obradovic was removed from the investigation when the sexual harrassment claims were first made public, as the government wanted to avoid further embarrassment.

Vuk Obradović (April 11, 1947 in the village of Kondželj, Yugoslavia – February 13, 2008 in Belgrade) was a Serbian general and politician. He was one of the leaders of the Democratic Opposition of Serbia in the Bulldozer Revolution in October 2000.

Before his political career, he was a professional soldier who later became the youngest general in the Yugoslav People's Army. He held a PhD in political studies, having defended a thesis on issues of nationalism in Yugoslav society. He resigned from the Army in May 1992, when the government refused to withdraw Yugoslav Army conscripts from fighting in Croatia.

After leaving the army, he formed the Social Democracy political party and remained its leader for almost 10 years. In 1997, he stood as a candidate in the Yugoslav presidential elections winning 3.04% of the popular vote.In 2000, he joined the Democratic Opposition of Serbia which finally toppled Slobodan Milošević in October that year. He became the deputy prime minister in the Government of Serbia tasked with leading the drive against corruption. In May 2001, he was forced to resign due to an allegation of sexual harassment of a female aide Ljiljana Nestorović, leading to the break-up of Social Democracy party into two factions.

In 2002, he was once again a candidate in the presidential election, this time winning only 0.73% of the popular vote.

The executive director of an Arkansas airport bearing the names of former President Bill Clinton and former first lady and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was shot Tuesday, when federal agents attempted to serve a search warrant. 

Arkansas State Police said the shooting occurred at 6 a.m. local time at a home on Durance Court in Little Rock, while the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) was serving a search warrant at the home of airport Executive Director Bryan Malinowski.

Malinowski, 53, was shot and treated at the scene before being taken to a local hospital.

His condition was not specified. 

An ATF agent was also injured in the shootout with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, and transported to a local hospital.

The ATF and the Little Rock Police Department asked state police to investigate the incident.
