US Considering Giving Israel More Military Aid as Leverage

An Israeli official complained that US weapons shipments have been slow

Recent media reports have said there are discussions within the Biden administration to condition military aid to Israel if it invades Rafah as a way to reduce civilian casualties. The assumption was that the US could threaten to cut off or reduce its weapons supply to Israel, but according to a report from ABC News, the US might do the opposite.

The report cited US officials who said the US hasn’t made a decision on leveraging military aid and that “it’s possible additional aid — not less — would be offered as an incentive” to reduce civilian casualties.

The US officials made the comments in response to a senior Israeli official complaining that US weapons shipments weren’t coming fast enough. The official said that in the wake of October 7, US arms “were coming very fast,” but “we are now finding that it’s very slow.”

US officials denied there was any intentional slowdown in weapons shipments to Israel. When asked about the Israeli claim, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the US was continuing to supply Israel with arms.

“I’m not gonna get into the timeline for every individual system that’s being provided,” Kirby said. “We continue to support Israel with their self-defense needs. That’s not going to change, and we have been very, very direct about that.”

The US provides Israel with $3.8 billion in annual military aid, and the Biden administration has approved over 100 arms deals since October 7 to support the mass slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza. The US is looking to give Israel another $14 billion as part of a $95 billion foreign military aid bill that’s passed through the Senate but has yet to be voted on in the House.

Gaza’s Health Ministry said Sunday that the death toll in Gaza since Israel unleashed its onslaught stands at 31,645 Palestinians. About 70% of the casualties are women and children. The Health Ministry’s numbers are considered a low estimate since they don’t account for the thousands who are missing and presumed to be dead under the rubble.

Biden White House Is Funding Palestinian Security Forces

The Palestinian Security Forces (PASF) were founded by the US, UN, and Russia in 1993. They have been funded and trained by the US on and off ever since. Now, the Biden White House wants to boost the PASF through the U.S. State Department. Allegedly, this will contribute to regional stability, as the PASF could coordinate with the Israel Defense Force (IDF). Furthermore, there is some discussion of deploying the PASF into Gaza to maintain order.

Providing weapons, money, and training to the same authority that birthed Hamas and the PLO—what could possibly go wrong?

The Palestinian Security Forces (PASF), also known as the Palestinian National Security Forces (PNSF), began following the establishment of the Palestinian Authority (PA) through the Oslo Accords in 1993. The PASF was originally formed from the bodyguards and security personnel of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). Under Yasser Arafat, the PASF grew into a larger, more formidable force.

After the death of Arafat in 2004, plans were made to rebuild the PASF. The following year, with support from the US, EU, UN, and Russia, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced the creation of the office of the United States Security Coordinator (USSC) for Israel and the Palestinian Authority. The goal was to remake the PASF as a multi-branch force as part of President George W. Bush’s Road Map to Peace.

The PASF consists of four branches: the Presidential Guard (PG), tasked with safeguarding the Palestinian president; the National Security Force (NSF), which ensures area security and aids the Palestinian Civil Police; the Palestinian Civil Police (PCP); and the Civil Defense (CD) directorate, responsible for basic firefighting and emergency response across the West Bank. All of the forces were largely trained by the Americans, with the PG being the only one extensively trained by the USSC.

After Hamas won the 2006 elections in Gaza, continued U.S. funding and training of the troops became more problematic. The situation became even more unstable in 2007 when tensions between Hamas and Fatah, another major Palestinian political party, escalated into violence, leading to a series of clashes between Hamas and Fatah forces in the Gaza Strip. Hamas emerged victorious in these clashes, effectively taking control of the Gaza Strip and ousting Fatah forces loyal to the Palestinian Authority led by President Mahmoud Abbas. This event is commonly referred to as the “Hamas takeover of Gaza” or the “Gaza coup.” It led to a split in Palestinian governance, with Hamas controlling the Gaza Strip while Fatah maintained control over the West Bank.

The Hamas/PLO split makes it very difficult for Gaza and the West Bank to work together, raising questions about how the US would train the security forces of both entities and who those entities would obey. Currently, the PASF exists and has troops in the West Bank, but they are being driven out of some towns by armed groups, and they have not received their salary in months, although the US regularly sends aid money.

One could easily ask why the White House is even trying. Hamas and the PLO have both been dubbed terrorist organizations. Under international law and US law, it is illegal to provide funding, training, and weapons to terrorists.

Not surprisingly, Israeli intelligence discovered that Palestinian Authority security personnel have been involved in terror attacks. According to a report from the Israeli NGO Regavim, 46 members of the Palestinian Authority Security Forces (PASF) lost their lives while engaging in terrorist activities aimed at or attempting to target numerous innocent Israelis. Additionally, 25 individuals were apprehended, and at least seven were injured. These findings suggest systematic wrongdoing within the PA’s ranks. The report goes on to allege that not only does the Palestinian Authority fail to condemn terrorism perpetrated by security force members, but it also celebrates them and provides financial assistance to the terrorists and their families.

Senate Finance Committee chair faces call to resign over wife's major stock holdings

"Conflicts of interest like this would pose ethical problems for any policymaker. But yours is especially problematic," the Republicans told Wyden.

Republicans are demanding Oregon Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden step down from his position as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee over his wife's major stock holdings.

"We are alarmed by reports of your wife's exceptionally large stock holdings, totaling $3 million, in four of the Big Five technology companies that you are tasked with overseeing – Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google," a group of national Republicans, led by New York Young Republican Club President Gavin Wax, wrote to Wyden in a letter obtained by Just the News on Thursday.

Wyden's latest financial disclosure covers 2022, and it shows that his wife, Nancy Wyden, owns at least $1.5 million in the four major companies, but may have as much as $3 million in investments. She also made between $15,001 and $50,000 in dividends from Apple that year.

Notably, Nancy Wyden may still have some involvement in all members of the Big Five. The financial disclosure shows she sold Meta holdings worth between $50,001 and $100,000, and it currently lists her holdings in the company as "None (or less than $1,001)."

The Senate Finance Committee has wide-ranging jurisdiction over numerous federal matters ranging from trade to taxation, and the Republicans pointed out how his wife's investments may pose a conflict of interest.

"As Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, you help determine whether these companies can continue their dangerous and socially destructive behavior, or whether they will be reined in. And Mrs. Wyden's investments – and therefore your own financial ties to these companies via your wife – bring your commitment to the task into question," they wrote.

"Conflicts of interest like this would pose ethical problems for any policymaker. But yours is especially problematic, given that you personally wield enormous power over the economic fate of the very same companies these investments support."

Nancy Wyden also has investments in tech companies outside of the Big Five. For example, she owns between $500,001 and $1 million in stock in NVIDIA, a global tech company.

In addition to Wax, the letter's signatories also include College Republicans of America President William Donahue, Republicans for National Renewal Executive Director Mark Ivanyo, National Constitutional Law Union Chairman John Pierce, Students for Trump Chairman Ryan Fournier and Italian American Civil Rights League President Paul Ingrassia.

Wyden's office did not immediately respond to Just the News' request for comment, but a spokesman previously told The New York Times: "Mr. Wyden and his wife keep separate finances." The filing deadline for Wyden's 2023 financial report is May 15.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama called in at the British Prime Minister’s official residence on Monday, but the office is keeping tight-lipped about the purpose of the one-hour meeting.

Barack Obama surprised when he turned up at Rishi Sunak’s front door on Monday, going inside the historic Downing Street residence for an hour and meeting with the Prime Minister. Former President Obama walked up to the famous black door alone but later emerged alongside the U.S. Ambassador to London Jane Hartley.

While Obama and Sunak clearly had enough to be talking about, the reason for the visit and what was discussed was not immediately disclosed, the mystery talk being described by an official to British government-adjacent newspaper The Daily Telegraph as “informal” and private. The Times notes shortly before Obama entered Downing Street, the British finance minister also arrived at the Prime Minister’s official office and residence by the front door. That arrival may be seen as a pointed statement given it is thought to be possible to get to the Prime Minister’s office from the Chancellor’s through internal passageways without going onto the street to be seen by the press.

Barack Obama’s visits to Downing Street may not have the happiest associations for some: his meetings there in 2016 ended in him telling the British people not to vote for Brexit, and if they did the country would go “to the back of the queue” for a trade deal with the U.S., which was seen as a potential benefit of leaving the European Union. This hectoring position, of telling sovereign people how to vote was not perceived to have been well received at the time, and the UK subsequently voted against Obama’s wishes.

While President Obama was out of the White House shortly after, the threat was made actual by eventual successor Joe Biden, who has stalled on trade with the UK since, leaving the country seeking deals with individual states instead.

Joe Biden Is Shipping Weapons to Israel Every 36 Hours

The Biden administration has been able to maintain a low profile by spreading arms provision to Israel across more than 100 smaller munitions sales — allowing the president to posture as a peacekeeper while US weapons wipe Gaza off the map.

In the one hundred fifty days after October 7, Israel killed thirty-one thousand Palestinians, injured seventy-two thousand, displaced 1.7 million, and razed or damaged more than half of Gaza’s buildings. Joe Biden sent over one hundred weapons shipments to Israel during the same stretch. In a recent classified briefing, US officials told members of Congress that the Biden administration approved and delivered more than one hundred separate weapons sales to Israel in the one hundred fifty days after October 7, “amounting to thousands of precision-guided munitions, small diameter bombs, bunker busters, small arms and other lethal aid,” the Washington Post reported on Wednesday. That works out to one new arms deal every thirty-six hours, on average.

These transfers are classified as sales, but very few of them meet that definition in the conventional sense. The vast majority are funded through State Department grants. Biden made just two of these publicly funded sales to Israel public, and the only reason he did is because he had to. Section 36 of the Arms Export Control Act (AECA) requires the president to notify Congress when a proposed arms sale exceeds a certain value. The notification threshold depends on the type of matériel (for “significant military equipment” it’s $14 million; for other military articles and services, $50 million; for military construction services, $200 million), but also the recipient. For NATO countries and South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Israel, the notification thresholds for these three categories are considerably higher ($25 million, $100 million, and $300 million, respectively).

While Biden is loud and proud about arming Ukraine, he prefers to arm Israel in secret. The quantity of sales since October 7 is case in point. By spreading his military support for Israel across more than one hundred sales, Biden kept pretty much all of them “under threshold” per the AECA, thereby avoiding congressional and public scrutiny. Biden might have picked up this trick from his predecessor. Donald Trump exploited the same loophole to dodge oversight on arms deals with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, whose intense and indiscriminate bombing of Yemen at the time had created a dire humanitarian crisis.

Keeping these transfers out of public view makes it easier for Biden to cast himself as Humanitarian of the Year in Gaza while going great lengths to help Israel destroy it. Biden’s series of food airdrops suggests he’s bravely trying to fix a catastrophe beyond his control. Administration officials perpetuate this narrative by insisting the president has no leverage over Israel. “There is a mistaken belief that the United States is able to dictate to other countries’ sovereign decisions,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller recently said.

This is wrong. The catastrophe in Gaza is the result of a deliberate policy choice Biden made. Israel’s military offensive would not be possible without him fast-tracking such vast quantities of weapons to its arsenal over the last several months. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has admitted that Israel’s assault on Gaza relies on a steady stream (a torrent, in fact) of US weapons, once telling a group of local government officials, “We need three things from the US: munitions, munitions, and munitions.” From October 7 to mid-February, Biden had delivered twenty-one thousand bombs to Israel, and Israel had already dropped half of them.

Netanyahu structured an urgent plea to US lawmakers in November in a similar way: “I need ammo, ammo, and ammo — yesterday,” he said and specifically requested 155 mm artillery shells. More than thirty aid and advocacy groups had urged the Biden administration not to supply this ammunition because the shells are unguided, highly explosive (with a casualty radius of 100 to 300 meters) and have been used by Israel in the past to hit hospitals, schools, shelters, and safe zones. Biden transferred 57,021 of them to Israel a few weeks later. The Israeli army announced in early December that it had fired more than one hundred thousand shells since its ground invasion of Gaza began on October 27, adding that artillery plays a “central role” by providing “intense fire cover” for its troops.

Israel lacks the production capacity to prosecute one of the deadliest, most intense bombing campaigns in history relying only on its own munitions. Israel’s assault on Gaza continues because Biden thinks it should continue. If he thought otherwise, he would shut down the weapons pipeline he constructed to enable it.

Niger Junta Severs US Military Cooperation Agreement, Orders Troops and Civilian Personnel Out of the Country

After the African Sahel nations suddenly and rapidly kicked the French colonial power out, it does appear that the US troops and diplomatic influence may be heading the same way.

Spokesman for the Niger military junta, Major Amadou Abdramane, stated clearly, with no margin for interpretation: ‘The American bases and civilian personnel cannot stay on Nigerien soil any longer.’

The US was left scrambled on Sunday to assess the future of its counterterrorism operations in the Sahel.

The American military has hundreds of troops stationed at a major airbase in northern Niger.

The group flies over the Sahel region — south of the Sahara Desert — in search of jihadi groups linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State.

Associated Press reported:

“Top U.S. envoy Molly Phee returned to the capital, Niamey, this week to meet with senior government officials, accompanied by Marine Gen. Michael Langley, head of the U.S. military’s African Command. She had previously visited in December, while acting Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland traveled to the country in August.”

According to State Department, talks were frank, but it does not seem that it has any leeway left to negotiate a deal to stay in the country.

“Niger had been seen as one of the last nations in the restive region that Western nations could partner with to beat back growing jihadi insurgencies. The U.S. and France had more than 2,500 military personnel in the region until recently, and together with other European countries had invested hundreds of millions of dollars in military assistance and training.”

In July, military forces ousted the country’s president and, mere months later, told French forces to leave.

“The U.S. military still had some 650 personnel working in Niger in December, according to a White House report to Congress. The Niger base is used for both manned and unmanned surveillance operations. In the Sahel the U.S. also supports ground troops, including accompanying them on missions. However, such accompanied missions have been scaled back since U.S. troops were killed in a joint operation in Niger in 2017.

It’s unclear what prompted the junta’s decision to suspend military ties. On Saturday, the junta’s spokesperson, Col. Maj. Amadou Abdramane, said U.S. flights over Niger’s territory in recent weeks were illegal. Meanwhile, Insa Garba Saidou, a local activist who assists Niger’s military rulers with their communications, criticized U.S. efforts to force the junta to pick between strategic partners.”

Neighboring Sahel nations Mali and Burkina Faso have turned to Moscow for security support.

In Niger, the military also turned to the Russian mercenary group Wagner for help.

“Cameron Hudson, who served with the Central Intelligence Agency and State Department in Africa, said the incident shows the diminution of U.S. leverage in the region and that Niger was angered by Washington’s attempt to pressure the junta to steer clear of Russia. ‘This is ironic since one mantra of the Biden Administration has been that Africans are free to choose their partners’, he said.”

Major Amadou Abdramane, speaking on state television, said junta leaders met the U.S. delegation only out of courtesy and described their tone as condescending.
