Migrant Channel Crossings Surge Amid Post-Riot Tensions In UK

Immigration tops the list of issues that Britons consider most important for the first time since 2016 – when Britain voted to leave the European Union – following riots this month targeting Muslims and migrants, pollster Ipsos said on Friday.

Just over a third of Britons (34%) named immigration as the biggest issue, ahead of healthcare, on 30%, the economy on 29%, crime on 25% and inflation on 20%, the August edition of the monthly Ipsos Issues Index showed.

For 11% of those polled race relations was the top issue.

Net migration to Britain – the difference between people moving to the country and those leaving – hit a record high in 2022 of 764,000. It fell slightly to 685,000 the following year.

The public’s concerns about immigration have increased in the aftermath of the rioting in many towns and cities this month in which anti-immigration demonstrators targeted hotels housing asylum-seekers and mosques, the pollster said.

“The impact of the recent riots across the UK is clear in this month’s data…the level of concern about crime and race relations has also surged to recent highs,” Ipsos researcher Mike Clemence said.

The unrest abated after a number of those involved were arrested and offenders swiftly jailed. Many people also took part in anti-racism rallies.

The Ipsos poll mirrors another released by YouGov last week, which also showed immigration topping the list of most important national issues for the first time since 2016, when concerns about immigration were a major driver of Britain’s vote to leave the European Union that year.

Ipsos polled 1,010 adults from Aug. 7-13 while YouGov surveyed 2,163 adults from Aug. 5-6.

PALERMO, Sicily, Aug 19 (Reuters) – One man died and six people were missing, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, after a luxury yacht was struck by an unexpectedly violent storm and sank off Sicily early on Monday.

The British-flagged “Bayesian,” a 56-meter-long (184-ft) sailboat, was carrying 22 people and was anchored just off shore near the port of Porticello when it was hit by ferocious weather, the Italian coast guard said in a statement.

Eyewitnesses said the yacht vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn. Fifteen people escaped before it went down, including a one-year-old child.

The names of the dead and missing were not immediately released, but a person familiar with the rescue operation confirmed that Lynch was not accounted for.

The Italian coast guard said the missing had British, American and Canadian nationalities.

“The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude,” a coast guard official in the Sicilian capital Palermo told Reuters.

Storms and heavy rainfall have swept down Italy in recent days – with floods and landslides causing major damage in the north of the country – after weeks of scorching heat.

The captain of a nearby boat told Reuters that when the storm hit he had turned the engine on to keep control of the vessel and avoid a collision with the Bayesian.

“We managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone,” Karsten Borner told journalists. The other boat “went flat on the water, and then down,” he added.

He said his crew then found some of the survivors on a life raft – including three who were seriously injured, and a baby girl and her mother – and took them on board before the coast guard picked them up.

Lynch, aged 59, is one of Britain’s best-known tech entrepreneurs. He built the country’s largest software firm, Autonomy, from his ground-breaking research at Cambridge University, and became known as Britain’s Bill Gates.

He sold the firm to HP for $11 billion in 2011, before the deal unraveled spectacularly following the acquisition, with the U.S. tech giant accusing him of fraud.

Once lauded by academics, scientists and politicians, Lynch spent much of the last decade in court defending his name. He was acquitted by a jury in San Francisco in June, after he spent more than a year living effectively under house arrest.

He said at the time that he was “elated” to be cleared in the criminal trial in which he denied any wrongdoing and blamed HP for botching the integration of the two companies.

DIVERS INSPECT WRECK

The coast guard said divers were inspecting the wreck of the Bayesian, which was lying at a depth of 49 meters.

Prosecutors in the nearby town of Termini Imerese have opened an investigation to look into what had gone wrong.

The Bayesian was built by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008 and was last refitted in 2020. Its 75-meter mast is the tallest aluminum mast in the world, Perini said on its website.

The shipspotting.com website said the boat was owned by a firm called Revtom Limited. Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares is named as the sole shareholder of the firm on company documents.

The yacht’s name would resonate with Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on Bayesian theory.

The ship won a string of awards for its design and can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and a crew of 10, according to online specialist yacht sites.

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of “at anchor,” according to vessel tracking app Vesselfinder.

A U.K. foreign ministry spokesperson said British officials were in contact with local authorities over the incident and were ready to provide consular support for Britons who were affected.

Co-Defendant of the billionaire who was killed when his yacht sunk this week, was killed by car on Sunday

The son of Stephen Chamberlain, the co-defendant of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, says he will complete the run his father was on when he was hit by a car.

Mr Chamberlain died in hospital after he was struck by a vehicle while running on the A1123 at Stretham in Cambridgeshire on Saturday.

He was Mr Lynch's co-defendant in a US fraud trial in which both men were acquitted following the $11bn (£8.64bn) sale of the software giant Autonomy.

The 52-year-old was about six miles (10km) into the morning run, according to data from his Strava account.

Commenting on Strava, his son, Teddy Chamberlain, announced plans to complete the run and invited those wishing to pay tribute to finish it with him.

He was the former vice-president of finance at Autonomy and prior to his US trial he was the former chief operating officer of British cyber security company Darktrace.

Mr Lynch and his daughter are currently missing after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday.

Mr Lynch had connections to Cambridgeshire after studying Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge.

He was raised near Chelmsford in Essex and more recently had been living in the Loudham Hall estate in Suffolk.

Following the crash, the driver of the car, a 49-year-old woman from Haddenham, remained at the scene and was assisting with inquiries, police said.

Bodies found in sunken superyacht ‘are Mike Lynch and daughter’

Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah are believed to be among five bodies found in the search of the luxury superyacht Bayesian on Wednesday.

Specialist cave divers continued their search for the missing passengers for a third day, breaking through a 3cm-thick pane of glass to gain access to the £30 million vessel.

Inside, Italian authorities believe that the divers found Mr Lynch and his daughter, along with three other passengers who had gathered on the vessel to celebrate the tech tycoon’s acquittal in a fraud trial.

Four bodies have been brought ashore. Salvo Cocina, the director of Sicily’s civil protection agency, said rescuers had found another body but were yet to recover it. One person remains missing.

Mr Cocina told The Telegraph that he believed Mr Lynch and his daughter had been found.

He added: “On behalf of myself and my colleagues, I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the families of the victims and express our condolences to them at this difficult time”.

Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Chris Morvillo, the Clifford Chance lawyer; and Neda Morvillo, his wife, are the other passengers missing since the yacht sank.

With help from remotely controlled underwater vehicles, divers began scouring the wreckage of the Bayesian from 8am. The yacht is lying intact on its starboard side, 165ft underwater.

Three body bags were seen being taken to the port of Porticello where dozens of emergency service staff were waiting. One was seen being put into the back of an ambulance.

In the nearby town of Termini Imerese, prosecutors have opened an investigation into the disaster. They will seek to establish what caused the yacht to sink and establish any criminality.

A tornado over water, known as a waterspout, had struck the 184ft yacht with 22 people on board as it moored overnight off Porticello, a fishing village 10 miles east of Palermo.

A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) also arrived in Porticello to look at the site of the sinking.

The MAIB is looking into what happened because the Bayesian was flying a British flag and is not involved in the search for the remaining missing passenger, it is understood.

PORTICELLO, Italy, Aug 21 (Reuters) – Four bodies were retrieved on Wednesday from the sunken wreck of a yacht belonging to the wife of British tech magnate Mike Lynch, the Italian fire brigade said, adding that they were continuing to search for two missing people.

The bodies were brought ashore on rescue boats and taken to nearby hospitals for formal identification. Local authorities refused to give any information about who they might have found.

Britain’s Daily Telegraph reported that two of the dead were Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, while Italy’s Corriere della Sera said the only bodies identified so far were Morgan Stanley banker Jonathan Bloomer and U.S. lawyer Chris Morvillo.

Bloomer’s wife, Judy, and Morvillo’s wife, Neda, also vanished when the British-flagged Bayesian, which had been carrying 22 people, was hit by a fierce, pre-dawn storm on Monday and sank.

Lynch, 59, was one of the UK’s best-known tech entrepreneurs and had invited friends to join him on the luxurious yacht to celebrate his recent acquittal in a U.S. fraud trial.

The 56-meter (184-foot) Bayesian had been anchored off the Sicilian port of Porticello when the storm struck and witnesses said it disappeared beneath the waves in a matter of minutes, baffling naval marine experts who said such a vessel, presumed to have top-class fittings and safety features, should have been able to withstand such weather.

The yacht is lying on its side at a depth of around 50 meters (165 feet), apparently largely intact.

Specialist rescuers have been searching inside the hull of the sunken yacht for the past two days. The victims were believed to have been trapped in cabins, which have proved extremely hard to get to, with divers only able to stay in the vessel for 8-10 minutes before having to re-surface.

Fifteen people, including Lynch’s wife, managed to escape the boat before it capsized, while the body of the onboard chef, Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, was found near the wreck hours after the disaster.

Besides the diving team, the coast guard has deployed a remotely operated vehicle to scan the seabed and take underwater pictures and videos that it said may provide “useful and timely elements” for prosecutors looking into the disaster.

MYSTERY

The coast guard has been questioning survivors, including the captain of the Bayesian, and passengers on the yacht that was moored next to it who witnessed the ship going down, judicial sources said. That vessel survived unscathed.

No one is under investigation at the moment, sources added.

The Bayesian was built by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008 and was last refitted in 2020. It had the world’s tallest aluminum mast, measuring 72 meters (236 feet), according to its makers.

Lynch has been referred to as Britain’s Bill Gates. He built the UK’s largest software firm, Autonomy, which was sold to HP for $11 billion in 2011, after which the deal spectacularly unraveled with the U.S. tech giant accusing him of fraud, resulting in a lengthy trial.

He was acquitted on all charges by a jury in San Francisco in June. Morvillo, who works for Clifford Chance, represented him at the trial, while Bloomer was a character witness on his behalf.

Bayesian’s captain, James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealander who survived the shipwreck, was a “very good sailor” and “very well respected” in the Mediterranean, his brother Mark told The New Zealand Herald.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, a UK-based non-profit organization that trains sea rescuers, said the Bayesian was the victim of a “high impact” weather-related incident.

“If it was a water spout, which it appears to be, it’s what I would class as like a black swan event,” he told Reuters, meaning a rare and unpredictable phenomenon.

UK government taken to court over North Sea oil and gas licenses

The decision by the UK government to issue a bucketload of new oil and gas exploration licenses since late last year has riled up environmentalists in the country with some turning to the courts to challenge them.

Leading up to the 2024 election, the previous majority government in the UK approved 82 oil and gas drilling licences in the North Sea between October 2023 and May 2024.

According to UK law, a legal challenge against the drilling licenses can only be made within three months of the decision to grant the license.

As a result, marine conservation organisation Oceana UK lodged a legal challenge with the High Court today against decisions made under the previous government to grant drilling licences to 31 North Sea oil and gas projects in May 2024.

In its legal challenge, Oceana claims that the approval of new drilling licences in the North Sea by the former government did not consider the risk of potential oil spills to the UK’s marine protected areas nor did it consider the full impacts of these drilling projects on the climate, including the estimated emissions generated by extracted oil and gas.

The organisation also sent an open letter to Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary Ed Miliband today, co-signed by more than 20 NGOs including Friends of the Earth Scotland, Greenpeace UK, and the Wildlife and Countryside Link, in an attempt to encourage the government to both concede the legal action brought by the organisation and rescind some of the drilling licences awarded by the previous government.

Oceana is represented by environmental law firm Leigh Day. It also argues that former Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary Claire Coutinho “failed to adequately assess the cumulative impacts of licensed drilling activity on the relevant sites”, and that she relied on a “flawed assumption” that only 50% of licenced drilling would end up taking place.

The new government has pledged to end all new North Sea oil and gas licencing while at the same time working to rapidly increase domestic renewables. However, it also stated that it would not rescind any existing drilling licenses handed out by other governments.

Oceana claimed in the letter that, by conceding the case, the government would “make good on promises made to the public and signal a clear departure from the previous administration’s continuing reliance on fossil fuels”.

Starmer Pledges English Channel Migration Crackdown

By Ellen Milligan (Bloomberg) On Thursday Keir Starmer’s government pledged to increase deportations of people with no legal right to stay in the UK to the highest rate in five years, an effort to show it is responding to Britons’ concerns about rising immigration.

The Home Office said Wednesday it will recruit as many as 100 intelligence officers at the National Crime Agency to help dismantle organized crime groups operating small boat crossings by asylum-seekers across the English Channel. It also said it would increase migrant detention capacity and crack down on firms hiring illegal workers, as the new Labour administration grapples with an issue that undermined the Conservatives under former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

A total of 827 people have crossed the channel in the past week, though Labour said arrivals are lower since it took office compared to the same period last year. It also said there have been nine returns flights in the past six weeks.

The measures are part of Home Secretary Yvette Cooper’s plan to lift the removal rate — including of asylum-seekers whose claims were rejected — to the highest level since 2018 over the next six months, according to the statement. The Home Office said that effectively means removing over 14,389 people.

“By increasing enforcement capabilities and returns, we will establish a system that is better controlled and managed, in place of the chaos that has blighted the system for far too long,” Cooper said.

Immigration was a major theme in July’s general election, which Labour won in a landslide, and has continued to dominate political discourse following the outbreak of far-right, anti-immigration riots across the country this month. The disorder was triggered by misinformation about the alleged perpetrator of a deadly knife attack on a young girls at a dance class in northern England.

During the election, Starmer promised to tackle the gangs organizing crossings by asylum-seekers, and soon after taking office he scrapped Sunak’s policy to deport migrants to Rwanda — a plan that the Tories in any case never put into action. Labour’s calculation was that Sunak had failed in his key promise to “stop the boats” and that voters were open to a new approach.

But there’s a risk for Labour if it doesn’t show progress quickly enough. Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party, which drove the Conservatives to distraction in the run-up to the election, is determined now to make life difficult for Starmer on immigration — especially on the small boat crossings.

Cooper’s plans were dealt an early blow following reports that her top pick to lead a new Border Security Command turned the job down. The government confirmed on Monday the recruitment process is still underway.

British police have raided and arrested an 11-year-old child for participating in a spate of recent anti-immigration protests, some of which turned violent.

Local police confirmed the arrest of the child on Thursday as they widen their crackdown against political dissidents and those who participated in the demonstrations.

Police have arrested an 11-year-old boy suspected of taking part in riots in the North East earlier this month. The young boy was one of 14 people arrested during a series of raids in Teesside carried out by Cleveland Police in the early hours of Wednesday.

The force has now arrested 110 people following the widespread trouble in Hartlepool and Middlesbrough, which was some of the worst seen in recent history.

Before police officers set out to carry out raids on Wednesday morning, Superintendent Marc Anderson briefed them, saying: “I was Silver Commander on Sunday August 4 and never in my 30 years’ service have I seen anything like that in Middlesbrough.”

“What the community had to put up with that day was completely unacceptable.”

While some protesters likely engaged in criminal activity, the police are under orders from the country’s new left-wing government to come down hard on anyone involved in the recent disorder.

During the summer of 2020, similar violent protests broke out across Britain in response to the death of George Floyd and the global Black Lives Matter movement.

The world doesn’t seem to have enough of the feud between the two sons of Britain’s King Charles, William and Harry.

This story has all the makings of an old Shakespearean drama.

“Once upon a time, there was a British King called Charles who waited many decades to ascend to the throne. When he finally did, his younger son, the Duke of Sussex, published a ‘memoir’ airing some of the family’s dirty laundry, and the writer of yet another book about him accused the King and the Princess of Wales of being racists towards the Duke’s son. Both the elderly King and the Princess fell ill with Cancer right after this. The End.”

But of course that was not the end.

We now see that on one side, Charles is talking to spiritual advisors about maybe pardoning his son.

On the other side, the prodigal Prince Harry has tasked former aides of plotting a way for his return to the Royal fold.

But there seems to be one immovable stone in the way: Prince William, the heir to the British throne.

All reports point to him as being inflexible in the repudiation of his younger brother, to the point where he is said to not even want him in his own coronation.

On the one hand, he may have future risks in mind when doing so: after all, he can see the real risks of pardoning Harry and Meghan, because their capacity for generating negative royal publicity is limitless.

There are books, TV series or high-profile celebrity interviews in the future that can break the Windsor dynasty for good.

Tony Blair Calls for Global Agreement on Social Media Speech Restrictions

Fresh off the crackdown on so-called “keyboard warriors” over social media posts connected to the recent anti-mass migration riots, leading leftist politicians in Britain are beginning to demand for new speech restrictions on the internet.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, whose neo-liberal Labour Party government enacted some of the strictest speech laws in modern British history, has joined the chorus of commentators demanding a new crackdown on social media.

Speaking to LBC Radio this week, Blair said: “The world is going to have to come together and agree on some rules around social media platforms.

“It’s not just how people can provoke hostility and hatred but I think… the impact on young people particularly when they’ve got access to mobile phones very young and they are reading a whole lot of stuff and receiving a whole lot of stuff that I think is really messing with their minds in a big way.

“I’m not sure what the answer is but I’m sure we need to find one.”

Blair was not alone in calling for new restrictions on social media. Earlier this week, the left-wing Speaker of the House Sir Lindsay Hoyle also said that the government should consider new limits against online speech.

“Misinformation is dangerous,” Hoyle said. “Social media is good but its also bad when people are using it in a way that could cause a riot, threat, intimidation, suggesting that we should attack somebody, it’s not acceptable.

“What we’ve got to do is factually correct what’s up there, if not I think the government has to think long and hard about what they are going to do about social media and what are they going to put through parliament as a bill.

“I believe it should be across, it doesn’t matter what country you are in, the fact is that misinformation is dangerous and no misinformation, or threats, or intimidation should be allowed to be carred out on social media platforms.”

Responding to Hoyle’s comments, the Free Speech Union wrote that it is “concerning to hear the Speaker of the Commons lumping ‘misinformation’ in with ‘incitement, threats and intimidation’ while talking up the need for greater cross-border censorship. Given that all statements of fact or opinion are provisional, who gets to define ‘misinformation’, and when?”

Labour MPs were ordered to ram through a ‘cruel’ raid on pensioners, while simultaneously authorizing the early release of hundreds of prisoners – in a list that includes thieves, drug dealers and even killers.

One former prisoner was met by friends in a Lamborghini while another boasted that he was now a ‘lifelong Labour voter’. Sir Keir’s true agenda is now being laid bare, as neither policy was mentioned in Labour’s election manifesto.

The Labour party even strenuously denying it would take away elderly voters’ energy subsidy during the campaign.

Labour ministers did what the left does so well – blamed the decisions on the legacy left behind by the precious Conservative government.

According to breaking reporting in The Wall Street Journal:

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to urge President Biden on Friday during a visit to Washington to sign off on allowing Ukraine to use long-range European-made cruise missiles to strike targets deep inside Russia, according to U.S. and Western officials.

…A decision to lift a ban on Kyiv using the Storm Shadow missile, which can hit targets 155 miles away, to fire into Russia would be a major win for Ukraine, which has been urging Western countries for months to loosen restrictions on long-range weapons.

Yes, Zelensky has been essentially begging for it, but we highly doubt a "win" will follow especially given as we detailed below Putin still holds many cards, and would likely escalate attacks on Kiev in a big way.

"While the final decision on Storm Shadow will be made by the U.K. government, British officials will ask for the Biden administration to weigh in because some components of the missiles are made in the U.S.," WSJ continues in the Friday afternoon report.

Hours earlier, PM Trudeau made his position clear:

Canada fully supports Ukraine using long-range weaponry to "prevent and interdict Russia's continued ability to degrade Ukrainian civilian infrastructure", Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday.

Trudeau told reporters that Russian President Vladimir Putin was trying to deeply destabilize the international rules-based order and added: "That's why Canada and others are unequivocal that Ukraine must win this war against Russia."

That Western officials are still talking a "win" against Russia means this tragic conflict is about to take a whole new catastrophic turn and path of uncontrollable escalation based on their delusions.

However, Kirby has indicated that while it's hard to take everything Putin says at face value, these latest threats and red lines are being taken "seriously".

"The White House takes seriously Moscow's statements that lifting restrictions on strikes deep into Russia would mean direct NATO involvement in the war," said Rear Admiral Kirby, White House Coordinator for Strategic Communications.

Russian leadership has issued a follow-up statement to President Vladimir Putin's Thursday brief video address warning that if the US and UK authorize Ukraine to pursue long-range strikes on Russian soil, then NATO and the Russian Federation will be in an official state of war.

On Friday Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, informed the UN Security council that NATO countries would "start an open war" in allowing Western long-range missiles to target Russia.

"If such a decision is made, that means NATO countries are starting an open war against Russia," Moscow’s envoy introduced. "In that case, we will obviously be forced to make certain decisions, with all the attendant consequences for Western aggressors."

Titanic Shipyard Owner Harland & Wolff Set to Enter Administration This Week

The owner of the shipping yard that built the Titanic is entering administration, a type of insolvency procedure in the UK, for the second time in five years.

Harland & Wolff Group Holdings Plc, which has been on the brink after Britain’s new Labour government rejected the struggling business’s appeal for state support, confirmed the move on Monday.

The process will likely start this week, according to the company’s statement, with Teneo lined up as administrators. Harland & Wolff will cut some jobs and wind down non-core operations, including a ferry service on the Isles of Scilly — which lie to the south west of England — and a small business in the US. More job cuts could follow in core areas.

The company’s assets have attracted the attention of defense companies including Babcock International Group Plc, according to reports published last week,with advisers from Rothschild & Co. leading a sale process.Monday’s statement said a “number of parties” have expressed interest in buying some or all of its subsidiaries.

The company sought emergency funding earlier in the summer to avoid falling into administration for a second time, having previously collapsed in 2019. However, Labour ministers rejected a £200 million ($264 million) loan facility that had been provisionally agreed by the Conservative administration that they defeated in the July 4 election. That prompted the Harland & Wolff Chief Executive Officer John Wood to leave his role.

UK-based InfraStrata bought Harland & Wolff out of administration in 2019 as part of a wider bet on the industry. But a very high level of overdue sums owed to creditors and material losses across its business activities make the outlook for the group challenging, according to Monday’s statement.

As part of the attempts to grow the business, the firm joined a consortium led by Spain’s Navantia SA that won a contract to build three ships for the Royal Navy. The company has been in contact with the Spanish firm on the terms of a plan to be able to resume work on that project in the Belfast yard.

Unite, a trade union representing workers at Harland & Wolff’s Belfast and Appledore dockyards, issued a statement demanding urgent action to preserve the future of the company’s workforce. The union expressed a preference for a single buyer for all the company’s yards and called on the UK government to intervene if the right buyer isn’t found.

Jobs in the shipyards won’t be affected by the administration process, a government spokesperson said in an emailed statement. They added that the private sector was in the best position to resolve the situation, rather than leaning on taxpayers.

Sunken Bayesian Superyacht Reportedly Has Water-Tight Safes Suspected of Holding Top-Secret Documents and Confidential Data – Security Is Heightened at Shipwreck Site

Back in late August, the world’s headlines were filled with the dramatic tale of the wreck of the 184-foot Bayesian superyacht, owned by tech billionaire Mike Lynch, hit by a sudden squall of tornado-like waterspouts off the coast of Sicily.

The wreck cost the life of Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and five others guests, while Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and 15 other people escaped the tragedy.

Now, the doomed vessel is back in the news, as is suspected that a trove of top-secret documents and confidential data on foreign governments could be trapped inside it.

The New York Post reported:

“Italian prosecutors ordered heightened security around the sunken boat to protect the sensitive information that they believe was stored in water-tight safes before the Aug. 19 tragedy, sources told CNN.

Among the loot are two super-encrypted hard drives that hold highly classified information, including passcodes and other sensitive data, tied to a number of Western intelligence services, an official involved in the salvage plans said.”

The hard drives are believed to belong to Lynch, associated with British, American, and other intelligence services through his various enterprises, including the cyber security company he founded, Darktrace.

Lynch also advised two former British prime ministers on science, technology, and cyber security.

“Shipwreck survivors previously told prosecutors that Lynch — dubbed the British Steve Jobs — ‘did not trust cloud services’ and always kept data drives in a secure compartment of the yacht wherever he sailed.”

The supposed information would be of interest to foreign governments, so Italian prosecutors, in an unusual move, requested that the yacht be guarded by both above-surface and underwater surveillance.

“’A formal request has been accepted and implemented for additional security of the wreckage until it can be raised’, an official with the Sicilian civil protection authority confirmed.”

The Bayesian will be monitored consistently until it is raised in the coming weeks.

Italian judiciary is investigating Captain James Cutfield to find out if he was responsible for the tragedy.

British PM Starmer’s Leftist Government Already in Turmoil, as His Own Labour Party Rejects His Plan of Cutting Winter Heating Subsidy for Pensioners

To say that Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour government in the UK has started with the wrong foot is almost an understatement.

Involved in a scandal of irregularly accepting free clothes for his wife, paying an unacceptably high salary his chief of staff, and unveiling a slew of unpopular and tyrannical policies and legislation projects – it’s a mess.

His popularity immediately tanked as a considerable portion of voters have ‘buyers regret’ for supporting him.

Now, if things were not bad enough, HIS OWN PARTY has turned against him, as yesterday (25) members of his Labour Party dealt the Premier a blow, rejecting his decision to cut payments that offset winter heating costs for millions of retirees.

“The vote on the final day of Labour’s annual conference is not binding, but it’s a setback to Starmer’s efforts to unite his center-left party around the contentious measure.

Since winning office in July, Starmer has cautioned that the dire state of the public finances inherited from the last Conservative government means he must make hard choices such as ending the winter fuel allowance, worth between 200 and 300 pounds ($262 and $393), for all but the poorest pensioners.”

“’I do not understand how our new Labour government can cut the winter fuel payment for pensioners and leave the super-rich untouched’, said Sharon Graham, general secretary of the Unite union, to applause from delegates. ‘This is not what people voted for. It is the wrong decision and it needs to be reversed’.”

Starmer, for his part, promised the withdrawal of the heating allowance would be compensated by an ‘above-inflation increase in the state pension’ and other measures to reduce poverty.

Secretary Liz Kendall told delegates that “this Labour government has done more to help the poorest pensioners in the last two months than the Tories did in 14 years” – but they weren’t convinced.

“Starmer tried to unite the party and appeal to a skeptical electorate in his first conference speech as prime minister on Tuesday, telling voters exhausted by years of political and economic turmoil that better times are on the way — if they swallow his recipe of short-term pain for long-term gain.”

He will cut public spending and increase taxes to try to achieve economic growth ‘to fund schools, hospitals, roads, railways and more’.

“Starmer acknowledged some of those decisions would be unpopular, but said: ‘We will turn our collar up and face the storm’.”

‘Something Serious Afoot’: US Judge’s ‘Suspicious’ Prince Harry Visa Ruling Triggers Backlash

The conservative Heritage Foundation isn’t giving up on its battle to learn whether the U.K.’s Prince Harry got preferential treatment when being approved for a visa to live in the United States.

The group is considering an appeal of a judge’s ruling Monday that the Duke of Sussex, who has made millions publishing a memoir about the most intimate details of his life, can keep his visa application under wraps because of his right to “privacy.”

“The Prince Harry scandal just got a lot more suspicious,” Mike Howell, executive director of the Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project, said in a statement published to the social media platform X.

Howell cited parts of U.S. District Judge Carl J. Nichols’ ruling that redacted crucial details of Harry’s visa application as grounds to suspect the prince got preferential treatment from the U.S. government.

Nichols was appointed in 2019 by then-President Donald Trump.

His ruling has sparked a backlash from Heritage that shows the public battle isn’t disappearing any time soon.

“While our case is far from over as we explore appeal, I’d say that these very curious redactions point to something serious afoot,” Howell’s statement said.

Harry and his wife, the former actress Meghan Markle, moved to the U.S. in 2020 after stepping back from being active members of Britain’s royal family — and amid a rancorous relationship with that royal family that apparently hasn’t gotten any better.

It isn’t clear what kind of visa Harry obtained from the U.S. government, according to The Washington Post. His wife is an American citizen.

The Heritage Foundation sued the Department of Homeland Security in 2023 to make public details of Harry’s visa application.

In the lawsuit, the group contended that disclosures about drug use Harry made in his bestselling memoir “Spare” could have made him ineligible for legal residency in the U.S.

It also contended Harry has waived any rights to “privacy” by his own very public actions.

“To be sure, even public figures have privacy interests,” the lawsuit stated. “This is particularly so as regards the aspects of their life that are not implicated by their public status and which they take steps to separate from their public life and keep confidential.

“The Duke of Sussex, however, has made the affirmative choice to put almost every aspect of his life on display — including those aspects traditionally kept private by public figures. In so doing, he has publicized not only his own most personal and private moments, but also those of HM the King, HRH The Prince and Princess of Wales, and the late HM the Queen. Moreover, these revelations have been made explicitly for massive commercial gain.” (Italics in the original.)

The lawsuit is an attempt “to force the Biden administration to publish his application to determine whether Harry lied or was granted preferential treatment because of his royal status,” Newsweek magazine’s chief royal correspondent Jack Royston wrote.

In his statement, Howell said it was a simple matter of fairness.

“Americans deserve an immigration system with both secure borders and also fairly applied rules for high-profile immigrants like Harry,” the statement said.

“It certainly appears that Harry was given special treatment and now we know it’s for something so serious that it involves extensive redactions.”

In one curious passage cited by the Oversight Project, Nichols’ ruling stated:

“In particular, the summary judgment record reflects that the Duke has never disclosed publicly (among other things) the following facts,” with the “facts” blacked out.

The next legible sentence stated: “That is the ‘type of information that a person would ordinarily not wish to make known about himself’ and therefore the government has demonstrated that the Duke retains a privacy interest in these records.”

UK Says Goodbye To Coal

The closure of Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station marks the end of coal-fired electricity generation in the UK.

This shift is part of the UK's commitment to achieving net zero emissions and transitioning to renewable energy sources like wind and solar power.

The UK is the first G7 country to phase out coal entirely, demonstrating a significant step towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

The UK’s last remaining coal-fired power station is to shut at the end of September, drawing to a close Britain’s 142-year reliance on the fossil fuel to produce electricity.

Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station has been generating electricity since 1968 via its four coal-fired boilers, eight vast cooling towers and 199-metre tall chimney, which occupies a prominent spot in the East Midlands skyline.

It is able to power about two million homes and has been the last station of its kind in the UK since September 2023, when Northern Ireland’s Kilroot power station stopped producing electricity from coal.

On September 30, Ratcliffe will close for the final time. Many of the 170 people employed by the plant’s owner, Uniper, will stay on to help with the two-year decommissioning process.

Ratcliffe’s closure puts a full stop on the country’s use of coal for electricity, which began with the Holborn Viaduct power station in London in 1882, the first of its type in the world.

Coal went on to play a major role in the national energy supply throughout the 20th century and accounted for about 80 per cent of UK power in 1990, falling to 39 per cent in 2012.

Since then, 15 coal power plants closed or switched fuels and last year the fossil fuel made up just one per cent of the UK’s supply, according to data from National Grid’s Electricity System Operator.

Meanwhile, renewables, mainly wind and solar power, now make up more than half of the mix, according to Government statistics. Gas has also played a part in the switch, rising from 28 per cent of the power mix in 2012 to 34 per cent last year.

Dhara Vyas, deputy chief executive of Energy UK, said:

“Ten years ago, coal was the leading source of this country’s power – generating a third of our electricity.

“So, to get to this point just a decade later, with coal’s contribution replaced by clean and low carbon sources, is an incredible achievement.

“As we aim for further ambitious targets in the energy transition, it’s worth remembering that few back then thought such a change at such a pace was possible.”

While the likes of Sweden and Belgium were among the first in Europe to phase out coal entirely, the UK will be the first country in the G7 bloc of major world economies to reach the milestone.

France, by comparison, has given itself until 2027 to complete the phase-out, Canada will follow suit until 2030. Germany, on current plans, will not do it until 2038.

But next comes the far larger task of significantly reducing the use of gas and further ramping up renewables, as the newly-elected Labour Government seeks to hit net zero emissions from electricity generation by 2030.

Its first steps were to set up a new state-owned energy investment company, GB Energy, and to lift a de facto ban on new onshore wind projects in the planning system in England.

The Government also handed out contracts for a new wave of green power projects in early September, including onshore and offshore wind and solar farms, which officials said will generate enough power for 11 million homes, in its annual auction.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said recently that switching to clean power is not just about fighting climate change, but energy security, after rocketing gas prices in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine caused consumer bills to spiral in 2022 and 2023.

Jess Ralston, head of energy at the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit, said the swift transition from coal to renewables “shows how possible it is to make the net zero electricity transition”.

Naomi Campbell Disqualified From Being a Charity Trustee in England for Five Years – Charity Money Spent in Luxury Hotels, Spa Treatments, Room Service and Even Cigarettes

Controversial former British supermodel Naomi Campbell is now barred from being a charity trustee in England and Wales for five years after a three-year investigation by the UK’s Charity Commission.

This comes after the two decades-old poverty charity was deemed yesterday (26) to have been ‘poorly governed’ with ‘inadequate financial management’.

The Charity Commission investigation into the financial activities of ‘Fashion for Relief’ found ‘multiple instances of misconduct and/or mismanagement’, and discovered that that only 8.5% of the charity’s overall expenditure went on charitable grants in a six-year period from 2016.

Associated Press reported:

“For example, it said that thousands of pounds worth of charity funds were used to pay for a luxury hotel stay in Cannes, France, for Campbell as well as spa treatments, room service and even cigarettes. The regulator sought explanations from the trustees but said no evidence was provided to back up their explanation that hotel costs were typically covered by a donor to the charity, therefore not costing the charity.”

Campbell has stated she is ‘extremely concerned’ by the findings of the regulator, and that an internal investigation was underway.

“’I was not in control of my charity, I put the control in the hands of a legal employer’, she said in response to a question from the AP after being named a knight in France’s Order of Arts and Letters at the country’s culture ministry for her contribution to French culture. ‘We are investigating to find out what and how, and everything I do and every penny I ever raised goes to charity’.”

The UK’s Charity Commission registers and regulates charitable entities in England and Wales.

It also found that fellow trustee Bianka Hellmich received around 290,000 pounds ($385,000) of unauthorized funds for consultancy services which was in breach of the charity’s constitution.

Hellmich has been disqualified as a trustee for nine years, while the other trustee, Veronica Chou, was barred for four years.

“’Trustees are legally required to make decisions that are in their charity’s best interests and to comply with their legal duties and responsibilities’, said Tim Hopkins, deputy director for specialist investigations and standards. ‘Our inquiry has found that the trustees of this charity failed to do so, which has resulted in our action to disqualify them’.

The charity, which was founded in 2005 in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, was dissolved and removed from the register of charities earlier this year. On its website, which is still active, the charity said that it presented fashion initiatives and projects in New York, London, Cannes, Moscow, Mumbai and Dar es Salaam, raising more than $15 million for good causes around the world.”

Campbell’s charity was set up with the aim of uniting the fashion industry to relieve poverty and advance health and education.

The UK’s Charity commission said that around $460,000 has been recovered and that a further 98,000 pounds of charitable funds have been protected.

British Government Warns Of Weak Military - Says Civilians Must Be 'Ready To Fight'

The British House of Lords has published a report claiming that military recruitment is dangerously low and the country's combat readiness is at risk. They say the civilian population 'must be ready to fight' (a clear reference to military conscription) should war with Russia be triggered.

The paper, titled 'Ukraine: A Wake-Up Call', admits to weaknesses in NATO's assumptions on "deterrence", though it seems to pretend as if Ukraine is part of NATO when it's not. Chaired by Lord de Mauley, the committee launched the inquiry in February 2024, two years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with the goal of assessing the conflict’s implications for UK defence policy.

"…We identified two key lessons. First, our deterrence strategy towards Russia clearly failed. If we are to restore the credibility of NATO’s nuclear and conventional deterrence posture towards Putin, we must develop a clearer understanding of the reasons for this failure."

"Secondly, the invasion exposed significant weaknesses in both the UK’s and NATO’s military strength, and the UK's ability to sustain large-scale warfare. Successive governments have attempted to maintain the notion of the UK as a global power, but the war in Ukraine has been a wake-up call, laying bare the gap between that ambition and reality."

It should be noted that February was near the beginning of Russia's attrition based offensive that is poised to take control of the entire Donbas region of Ukraine. This was well after Ukraine's much hyped "counter-offensive" which ended with an embarrassing whimper.

The report paints a concerning picture of the British Army’s ability to contribute adequately to NATO’s deterrence strategy. It states:

“All in all, the evidence we heard points to the current size of the British Army being inadequate. While size is not the only measure of capability, we are concerned that the Army cannot, as currently constituted, make the expected troop contribution to NATO. We therefore question whether the British Army is prepared to meet the growing threat posed by Russia to European security.”

The current size of the British Army is 75,166 regular troops and 183,000 personnel across all branches. Keep in mind only 80,000 of these personnel would play a front line combat role. If the casualty numbers coming out of Ukraine are anywhere close to accurate this would not be enough troops to sustain a single year of combat in an attrition based war.

The House of Lords called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to develop a plan that “resonates with citizens, emphasizing the importance of national security in their daily lives and moving beyond the notion that defense is solely the military’s responsibility”.

The paper also warned that while there was a risk that conversations around civilians “could end up veering into discussions around conscription”, the government had “an opportunity to broaden this out and consider how it could incorporate the whole of society in building resilience”.

The real question is, why would the British public fight for the current government? Military recruitment relies heavily on true patriots and a sense of national identity, but Keir Starmer and government overall has made it quite clear that they intend to erase indigenous Anglo-Saxon British identity through forced mass immigration from third-world countries. Starmer has even gone so far as to arrest British citizens simply for posting critical opinions on social media.

The House of Lords acts bewildered as to why the civilian population has little interest in military readiness. Maybe it's because the British government has gone full Orwellian? The average westerner is not going to go to war to risk their lives for a system that oppresses them. This is why recruitment is at all time lows and why conscription would be useless.

Another factor which likely plays a considerable part in public apprehension is the threat of WWIII. The majority of people in the west have little enthusiasm over engaging in a war that could very well lead to a global nuclear exchange, especially over a country like Ukraine which, for them, is insignificant. There is nothing to be gained.
