Election machines reported more votes than ballots in two Virginia precincts, nonprofit alleges

The two precincts were in Virginia's 7th and 10th Congressional Districts.

Election machines reported more votes than physical ballots cast in two precincts in an influential Virginia county, raising concerns about election administration in the midterms after the county's former registrar was charged earlier this year with multiple election-related offenses.

In Prince William County, one of Virginia's most important electoral counties, at least two precincts had more ballots reported on the machine scanners' tallies of ballots than were tabulated by election officers, according to a report by Electoral Process Education Corporation (EPEC), a nonprofit that performs election data analysis.

A board of directors member of EPEC told Just the News on Monday that precincts P-612 and P-104 were the ones affected by the discrepant vote totals. P-612 is in Virginia's 7th Congressional District, and P-104 is in the 10th.

Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger won the 7th CD against GOP nominee Yesli Vega, and Democratic Rep. Jennifer Wexton won reelection in the 10th CD against Republican candidate Hung Cao.

In P-612, the ballot scanner reported 531 ballots scanned, but only 504 ballots were actually collected in the machine. Election officers realized the discrepancy when comparing the check-ins on the poll books to the number of ballots the scanner had reported.

The issues were documented by election officers with the General Registrar and Electoral Board, and the information was recorded in the official statement of results and chief's notes.

Election officers hand-counted the ballots according to election procedures multiple times. The outcome was 27 more votes on the machine tallies than physical ballots. A total of 22 of those votes were for the Democratic candidate, three for the Republican, and two write-ins.

In P-104, there were only about 5-10 more ballots on the machine tallies compared to physical ballots out of a total of 1505 ballots cast.

While the discrepancies won't change the outcome of the elections, and no other errors have been discovered, the issue has yet to be explained.

Prince William County's Office of Elections didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Monday night.

EPEC "is urging Virginia's public election officials to verify scanner machine ballot counts before certification of results in key precincts as a result of recent findings."

The nonprofit added, "Although the number of ballots impacted was small, the repeated findings raise questions about the origin of the errors and whether the machines were operating correctly."

The county election results are to be certified by the electoral board on Tuesday. Certification includes seeing how many people voted, what ballots were rejected, and checking provisional ballots.

"Two people have been killed in Poland after two stray rockets landed near the border with Ukraine. It has not yet been confirmed if the rockets landed in the NATO state as a result of Russia's mass bombardment of Ukrainian cities earlier today, which saw over 100 rockets launched. Poland's Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, has convened the Committee of the Council of Ministers for National Security and Defense Affairs "as a matter of urgency", government spokesman Piotr Müller confirmed, with local news sites claiming this is likely the result of the explosions. The rockets fell in the town of Przewodów, hitting grain dryers. The police, prosecutor's office and the army are reportedly already on the site. Some analysts have suggested the rockets' intended target may have been Lviv, a Ukrainian city about 100km south of Przewodów.

"The most important people in the country" are attending Poland's emergency meeting, according to local news outlet Radio Zet."

The European Parliament’s Inquiry Committee into Pegasus and other spyware met Monday for a hearing on the situation in Germany, after a study revealed that a number of EU countries had been utilizing the infamous Pegasus malware.

However, nobody from the German government attended the hearing although the committee invited the Vice President of the German Federal Police Martina Link three times but each time she remained unavailable.

“It’s not a very good sense of cooperation we receive from the German authorities in this sense,” said Jeroen Lenaers, a Dutch Member of the European Parliament who chaired the hearing.

The only expert who attended was investigative journalist Andre Meister from the Berlin-based outlet Netzpolitik.org. He said that the fact that “the German government and police turned down the invitation of this committee is disgraceful.”

Government agencies in Germany have been spying on people for at least two decades, recently particularly on “anti-facshist human rights defenders and climate activists. In this very moment 12 climate activists are in prison without trial or charges,” he said. This kind of incarceration is used to keep them from protesting on the street, he added.

Similar hearings will be organized in the forthcoming period since a report presented before the European Parliament last week revealed that at least 14 EU governments have used the infamous malware to spy on journalists, civil society, lawmakers or civilians.

“The spyware scandal is not a series of isolated national cases of abuse, but a full-blown European affair,” the report said. “EU Member State governments have been using spyware on their citizens for political purposes and to cover up corruption and criminal activity.”

The report warned that some EU governments “went even further and embedded spyware in a system deliberately designed for authoritarian rule,” while others “may not have engaged in abuse of spyware, but they have facilitated the obscure trade in spyware.”

The document claimed that Europe has become an appealing location for mercenary spyware as well as an exporter to dictatorships and brutal regimes such as Libya, Egypt and Bangladesh, “where the spyware has been used against human rights activists, journalists and government critics.”

“We are looking at, on the one hand, the abuse of spyware by the EU governments, and on the other hand, the trade in spyware, because Europe is a very important and attractive place for the spyware industry,” the Committee’s rapporteur, Dutch lawmaker Sophie in ‘t Veld, said presenting the summary of the report’s key findings to the EU Parliament.

Poland and Hungary attracted the worst criticism. In ’t Veld claimed that these two countries used the spyware as an “integral part” of a system aimed to “control and even oppress citizens,” notably government opponents, the opposition, journalists, and whistleblowers.

In the case of Poland, the country’s former Prime Minister and current member of the European Parliament Beata Szydło, together with the former Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski, in November 2016 “attended dinner at the home of then Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.”

“The following year in July, Szydło and Netanyahu met with the heads of governments of the Visegrad Group countries and allegedly discussed ‘strengthening cooperation in the area of innovation and high technologies’ and ‘issues related to the broadly understood security of citizens’,” according to the report.

X-37B orbital test vehicle concludes sixth successful mission

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. – The X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle-6 (OTV-6), the U.S. Space Force’s unmanned, reusable spaceplane, successfully deorbited and landed at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Shuttle Landing Facility on Nov. 12, 2022, at 05:22 a.m.

OTV-6 was the first mission to introduce a service module-a ring attached to the rear of the vehicle expanding the number of experiments that can be hosted during a mission. “This mission highlights the Space Force's focus on collaboration in space exploration and expanding low-cost access to space for our partners, within and outside of the Department of the Air Force (DAF),” said Gen. Chance Saltzman, Chief of Space Operations.

The service module successfully separated from the OTV before landing, which is a necessary activity due to the aerodynamic forces experienced by the X-37B vehicle upon re-entry. In the coming weeks, the service module will be disposed of in accordance with best practices. Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall said, “The deliberate manner in which we conduct on­orbit operations-to include the service module disposal-speaks to the United States' commitment to safe and responsible space practices, particularly as the issue of growing orbital debris threatens to impact global space operations.”

The OTV-6 mission hosted the Naval Research Laboratory's Photovoltaic Radiofrequency Antenna Module. This experiment successfully harnessed solar rays outside of Earth's atmosphere and aimed to transmit power to the ground in the form of radio frequency microwave energy. Additionally, the U.S. Air Force Academy's FalconSat-8, developed in partnership with Air Force Research Laboratory, was successfully deployed in October 2021. FalconSat-8 remains in orbit, providing Academy cadets unique hands-on experience as space operators prior to entering active duty.

Multiple NASA experiments were deployed on OTV-6. The Materials Exposure and Technology Innovation in Space (METIS-2) included thermal control coatings, printed electronic materials, and candidate radiation shielding materials. METIS-1-which flew on OTV-5-consisted of similar sample plates mounted on the flight vehicle. NASA scientists will leverage data collected after the materials have spent 900+ days in orbit and compare observed effects to ground simulations, validating and improving the precision of space environment models.

Another NASA experiment aims to investigate the effect of long-duration space exposure on seeds. Scientists are interested in the seeds’ resistance and susceptibility to space environment-unique stresses, notably radiation. The seeds experiment will inform space crop production for future interplanetary missions and the establishment of permanently inhabited bases in space.

“The X-37B continues to push the boundaries of experimentation, enabled by an elite government and industry team behind the scenes,” said Lt. Col. Joseph Fritschen, DAF Rapid Capabilities Office’s X-37B Program Director. “The ability to conduct on-orbit experiments and bring them home safely for in-depth analysis on the ground has proven valuable for the Department of the Air Force and scientific community. The addition of the service module on OTV-6 allowed us to host more experiments than ever before.”

The sixth mission conducted on-orbit experiments for 908 days.

Credit Suisse To Sell Bulk Of Securitized Products Group To Apollo As "Restructuring Accelerates"

Credit Suisse AG disclosed a major restructuring announcement three weeks ago that would carve up its investment bank, reduce headcount, and raise $4 billion in capital. More details emerged Tuesday that it would "accelerate" the restructuring.

For years, the 166-year-old Swiss lender stumbled from crisis to crisis, but those days could be nearing an end as it announced an agreement to sell a large chunk of its securitized products group to Apollo Global Management Inc.

"As part of the transaction, Apollo has agreed to acquire a significant part of Credit Suisse's SPG portfolio assets. This transaction, together with the contemplated sale of other portfolio assets to third-party investors, is expected to reduce SPG assets from USD 75 billion to approximately USD 20 billion, through a series of transactions expected to be completed by mid-2023," Credit Suisse said.

Credit Suisse said the SPG deal with Apollo would be an "important step towards a managed exit from the Securitized Products business, which is expected to significantly de-risk the investment bank and release capital to invest in Credit Suisse's core business."

Shares of Credit Suisse trading in Zurich have been more than halved this year due to speculation of undiscovered financial land mines on the bank's balance sheet and unfounded rumors of insolvency.

Australia's Rail Network Paralyzed After Train Derailment, Flooding, May Cause Supply Chain Chaos

A freight train derailment and flooding have paralyzed vital transportation networks, completely cutting off Perth and Adelaide from Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane.

Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported dozens of shipping containers scattered across the tracks when a freight train derailed in Victoria's west on Monday.

Footage from the incident area shows at least 20 shipping containers piled on top of each other and water beneath the tracks. The location of the crash was about 56 miles from Melbourne. There's reason to believe months of heavy might have led to track failure.

The crash has broader implications for the country's transportation network, as ABC explained:

"It is now blocking the rail line between Melbourne and Adelaide, cutting off Adelaide from the Port of Melbourne."

The national broadcaster then pointed out on a map that another critical rail line called Broken Hill was out of order due to heavy flooding, which means:

"No trains are able to go east to west in the whole country. We were hanging by a single thread, which has now been severed."
