Parents accuse Amazon of selling ‘suicide kits’ to teens

Two families who have lost children to suicide have filed a lawsuit against Amazon alleging that the e-commerce giant sells so-called “suicide kits” — in the form of a food preservative “as deadly as cyanide.”

The parents of Kristine Jónsson, 16, of Ohio, and Ethan McCarthy, 17, of West Virginia, argue that Amazon is partially responsible for the children’s deaths because of the sale of sodium nitrite, NPR reported.

The chemical is a food preservative that can cause breathing problems, abdominal pain and even death if ingested at high enough levels of purity.

“Amazon is selling a product that is as deadly as cyanide,” the families’ lawyers Carrie Goldberg and Naomi Leeds said in a statement, according to the news outlet.

“This is different from them selling rope, knives, or other implements that can be used for death because there is no household use for [sodium nitrite] at the level of purity (98-99%) it sells it,” the attorneys added.

The lawsuit, recently filed in California state court, also claims that Amazon recommended that customers also purchase a scale to measure dosages, as well as an anti-vomiting drug and the company’s edition of an assisted-suicide handbook.

Kristine and Ethan took their lives on Sept. 30, 2020, and Jan. 7, 2021, respectively.

Goldberg claimed that some sodium nitrite sold on the e-commerce site is of such a high purity that swallowing a single teaspoon will almost certainly kill a person, according to NPR.

An Amazon spokesperson told The Post in an email that the company extends “our deepest condolences” to the families.

“We are committed to a safe shopping experience and require our selling partners to follow all applicable laws and regulations when listing items in our store. Sodium nitrite is a legal and widely-available product offered by retailers to preserve foods, such as meats and fish, and for use in laboratories as a reagent,” the rep wrote.

“Sodium nitrite is not intended for consumption, and unfortunately, like many products, it can be misused,” the statement said.

The missile flies with an advanced fuel that the Russians say gives it a range of up to 1,000 kilometers. And it's so fast that the air pressure in front of the weapon forms a plasma cloud as it moves, absorbing radio waves and making it practically invisible to active radar systems.

U.S. Aegis missile interceptor systems require 8-10 seconds of reaction time to intercept incoming attacks. In those 8-10 seconds, the Russian Zircon missiles will already have traveled 20 kilometers, and the interceptor missiles do not fly fast enough to catch up.

Experts say such weapons are currently impossible for the USA to defend against.

The United States will launch a new testing programme for hypersonic weapons, as it seeks to catch up with China and Russia in the arms race.

Gannett which also publishes the conspiratorial Epoch Times hasn't commented on its publication of phony newspapers in Illinois such as “West Cook News” and “Chicago City Wire," which appear to be linked to Florida-based conservative talk show host Dan Proft, who has targeted Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, reported the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

"The fake newspapers previously were printed by a Chicago suburban newspaper, the Daily Herald, but the owner canceled the contract on Sept. 22 after Pritzker publicly chastised the company and refused to participate in a candidates’ debate sponsored by the Daily Herald," the Post-Dispatch reported. "Proft’s company, Local Government Information Services, then took its business to cash-strapped Gannett, lamenting that it had paid 'millions of dollars' to the Daily Herald’s publishing company, Paddock Publications, over a period of several years."

The publications have been repeatedly caught by fact-checkers for peddling misinformation, and their coverage of Pritzker's GOP challenger Darren Bailey appears to have lifted talking points from his campaign promotional materials.

The phony newspapers are also oddly fixated profiling Chicago-area teens with notably low rankings in youth tennis.

“It has all the appearance and trappings of an official news organization, and it’s trying to hitch a ride off the credibility of newspapers built over time,” said Peter Adams, senior vice president of education at the News Literacy Project. “This crosses the boundary into propaganda.”
