GOP Rep. Kinzinger receives chilling threat against him, wife and 5-month-old son

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, one of two Republicans on the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, shared a frightening letter that threatened to “execute” his family, including his 5-month-old baby.

“Here is the letter. Addressed to my wife, sent to my home, threatening the life of my family,” the Illinois congressman posted Sunday on his Twitter account.

The unhinged note, addressed to Kinzinger’s wife, Sofia, begins: “That pimp you married not only broke his oath, he sold his soul.”

The letter then goes on to chillingly warn her husband would be “executed.”

“Therefore, although it might take time, he will be executed.

“But don’t worry! You and Christian [the couple’s infant son] will be joining Adam in hell too!”

In an appearance earlier on ABC News’ “This Week,” the congressman said his wife received the letter a few days ago.

He was asked by host George Stephanopoulos if he fears for his and his family’s safety.

Social Media Posts Could Lead to Gun Confiscation Under Proposed Red Flag Law

“Red flag laws allow us to take action when someone who has a gun begins to act erratically,” Governor Wolf posted. In the social media age, this could include in online posts. “Red flag laws still require due process, and any removal of weapons is temporary,” Governor Wolf continued.

Governor Wolf rebuked Republicans in the House Judiciary Committee for refusing to approve what he called “commonsense” bills addressing gun violence in the state.

Instead of voting to move the four bills to the House for debate, Republicans on the Judiciary committee forced a vote to refer the bills to another committee.

“Shameful. That’s what I’d call today’s action – or, rather, inaction,” Governor Wolf said. “Lawmakers have an opportunity to take commonsense steps, which the majority of Pennsylvanians support. Instead of taking a vote to advance these bills, they are just delaying debate on this legislation. Gun violence won’t delay. Every day the Republicans stall, more people are at risk.

“This isn’t just a ‘Philadelphia’ issue. This is a statewide and national issue that must be addressed. It’s reprehensible that Republicans continue to stall when our own constituents want this addressed right now,” Governor Wolf said. “I urge Republicans to stop these tactics and take action.”

Last week, Governor Wolf sent a letter to the members of the committee calling on them to approve the four bills as they are.

“I have committed to doing everything I can to bring peace to our communities, but ultimately, sensible gun laws save lives, and the General Assembly must act to make statutory changes,” Governor Wolf said. “Communities across the commonwealth – urban, suburban and rural – have experienced the horror of gun violence. We must do our part to prevent these tragedies.”

The letter also alleged that the bills are not meant to take guns away from law-abiding citizens but doesn’t touch on how a social media post with photos of guns could be illegal.

“If the aforementioned bills became law, they would not infringe upon the rights of law-abiding gun owners. This is not about taking guns away from those who lawfully own and operate them, it’s about ensuring guns are appropriately locked up and kept out of the hands of those who are more apt to cause harm.”

The governor concluded: “We can no longer afford to do nothing. Every day that we delay, lives are on the line. Pennsylvanians are counting on you.”

3 people, 2 dogs jump ship after New Hampshire yacht erupts in flames

A massive yacht caught fire on a New Hampshire river Saturday and sank after three people and two dogs jumped overboard.

The group were onboard the 72-foot vessel, named the Elusive, on their way to a marina on the Piscataqua River in New Castle when they noticed black smoke coming from below the deck at around 4 p.m., the New Hampshire Department of Safety said.

The three people as well as their two dogs jumped into the river as the Elusive went up in flames. All five were rescued by good Samaritans on nearby boats.

The three boaters — identified as Arthur Watson, 67, and Diane Watson, 57, of New Canaan, Connecticut and Jarrod Tubbs, 33, of Jupiter, Florida — were taken to a nearby hospital, treated and released.

The yacht — shown engulfed in flames and dark smoke in photos shared by the Coast Guard — eventually drifted into Maine waters where it sank about two hours after the initial 911 call.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.

Al-Quds Brigades had announced on Saturday that they would be launching wide, large-scale drills in the Gaza Strip in order to up the preparedness of the forces and to lay down the groundwork for any future battle.

The joint operations room of Palestinian Resistance factions had launched the Al-Rukn Al-Shadid 2 joint military exercises in late December.

The drills saw the participation of all the Palestinian Resistance factions to achieve greater harmony, unite their concepts, and increase their efficiency.

The military maneuvers in late 2021 came in light of the Israeli aggression launched on the Gaza Strip, which killed hundreds of Palestinians, wounded hundreds of others, and destroyed the Strip's infrastructure.

The Navy has fired a total of 13 commanding officers so far this year but won’t explain why

The Navy has fired nearly a dozen officers in leadership positions in less than three months, including five in one week, due to a “loss of confidence” in their ability to command — an unusual string of terminations across land, air and sea teams, experts said.

At least nine commanding officers and two senior advisers have been relieved of their duties since April, when a cluster of suicides on the USS George Washington warship sparked widespread concerns of a mental health crisis.

A total of 13 commanding officers have been fired so far this year, including 12 in the Navy and one in the Marine Corps, the Navy said. Most recently, four Naval commanding officers and a top leader were ousted from June 8 to June 14.

It’s unclear what prompted the personnel changes, which the Navy said were unrelated to each other. The Navy did not elaborate further on specific conditions that led to the firings, but stressed the importance of “trust and confidence” across all levels of the chain of command.

“The U.S. Navy has long maintained high standards for all its personnel. Those who fall short of these standards are held accountable,” said Lt. Cmdr. Devin Arneson, a Navy spokesperson, who added that such an action is “neither punitive nor disciplinary.”

None of the leaders served the George Washington, where at least five crew members died by suicide in the last year, angering some sailors and advocates who work to reduce military suicides.

Morocco, US armies to kick off African Lion military exercises

The Moroccan and US armies will kickoff Monday the African Lion 2022 (AL22) maneuvers in several cities across Morocco with the participation of 18 other countries.

The maneuvers will involve about 7,500 army personnel from Morocco, the US, and several allied countries and will also be partially held in Tunisia, Senegal, and Ghana.

A statement issued by the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces said the exercises will take place from June 20-30 in the regions of Kenitra, Agadir, Tan Tan, Taroudant, and Mahbes.

"The inclusion of Mahbes as one of the locations for the military drilling mirrors the US position in supporting Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over Western Sahara," the Morocco World News website pointed out.

According to the statement, the African Lion maneuvers will include the participation of military observers from about 30 countries in Africa and the world.

The official website of the US Army quoted Maj. James Guglielmi as saying that the “AL22 is the premiere joint multinational exercise in the AFRICOM area of responsibility,” adding that “it is going to be better and bigger than last year, and will be the best exercise to date.”

The AL22 "functions as a platform to support interoperability between partner nations as well as increase the U.S. influence in North Africa and the Sahel," the US Army website pointed out.

It is noteworthy that the US and France are Morocco’s main suppliers of military equipment.

Several killed, others injured in terrorist attack on bus in Al-Raqqa

Al Mayadeen's correspondent reported that a number of civilians and soldiers were killed in a terrorist attack on a civilian passenger bus in the countryside of Al-Raqqa on the Zamla road within Jabal Al-Bishri.

According to Al Mayadeen's correspondent in Damascus, the bus was attacked by ISIS militants with machine guns.

The Syrian news agency SANA stated that the initial death toll was 13 soldiers along with an additional 3 wounded.

Later, a Syrian military source revealed that 11 soldiers and two civilians were killed in the terrorist attack that targeted a civilian bus on Al-Raqqa-Homs road.

According to a military source, "At around 6:30 am, a civilian bus was targeted by a terrorist attack on Al-Raqqa-Homs road in Al-Jira area, which led to the death of 11 soldiers and two civilians, while 3 other soldiers were wounded."

In April, Syria sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and to the UN Security Council about the war crimes of the US-led international coalition in the city of Al-Raqqa in 2017.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made it clear that the US military operation carried out by the forces of the illegitimate international coalition in Raqqa in the period from June to October 2017, led to the almost complete destruction of the city and thousands of its civilians," the Syrian Foreign Ministry statement indicated.

While Touting Abortion, Biden Admin Moves To Drop Natural Family Planning From Insurance Coverage

In recent years, more women and couples have come to depend on Fertility Awareness Based Methods (FABM) for family planning—and for good reason. As more becomes known about the dangers of pharmaceutical contraceptive drugs and devices, FABMs provide the effective, empowering, side-effect-free alternative that couples have been searching for.Unfortunately, the Biden administration is attempting to illegally rescind the Affordable Care Act’s mandated coverage for FABM instruction—so much for “choice,” right?

You’ve heard the phrase “give a man a fish, feed him for a day / teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.” Well, birth control pills and devices are easily the former, while instruction in a FABM is the latter. FABM teaches women and couples to read the signs of their fertility so they can know when they are most likely to get pregnant over the course of the menstrual cycle, and plan intercourse according to their desire to avoid or achieve pregnancy. FABMs are not only more empowering than popping a pill or implanting an IUD (both of which suppress a woman’s natural fertility and come with a host of risks and side effects), but they are far more cost-effective in the long run, too.

However, while FABMs are more cost-effective than pharmaceutical birth control in the long run, learning a FABM can cost between $100 and $500 depending on the method and on how much personal support a woman or couple needs. As my organization Natural Womanhood learned when we launched our scholarship fund for fertility awareness instruction, quite a few women and couples may be challenged to fund this training when they most need it.

Fortunately, in recent years, some women and couples have been able to find coverage for FABM instruction. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 2016 included “instruction in fertility awareness-based methods” as part of the ACA’s demand that insurance plans refrain from placing cost-sharing requirements on women seeking “preventative care and screenings.” Therefore, since 2016, FABM instructors have been able to seek reimbursement for providing their services, as long as they were licensed (or covered under the license) of a medical professional.

Unfortunately, for reasons unbeknownst to anyone but themselves,the Biden administration’s HHS suddenly decided to rescind this coverage in December 2021. If left unchallenged, the new rule will go into effect in December 2022, and thousands of women and couples seeking FABM instruction will be forced to pay out of pocket or forego it altogether for lack of funds to pay for it.

Fortunately, Alliance Defending Freedom has taken up the call to defend real choice in family planning for women and couples. In doing so, they are highlighting the utter hypocrisy of an administration that prides itself on “choice,” literally taking away choices of family planning for thousands of women and couples in the United States. The administration’s decision is especially ironic, given that the left is currently accusing the right of “coming for your birth control next,” to drum up even more hysteria surrounding the upcoming Supreme Court decision on Dobbs.

ADF’s client (and the plaintiff in the case) is Dr. Cami Jo Tice-Harouff, a Texas nurse practitioner who uses FABMs to not only teach couples how to effectively plan their families, but also as a health tool that can help her diagnose and treat the underlying sources of health issues in women of all ages, such as irregular, painful, and heavy periods, PMS/PMDD, infertility, and more.

Rather than placing a woman on the Band-Aid solution of birth control, which merely overrides her natural cycles and treats nothing, Tice-Harouff uses the information from a woman’s cycle charts (along with other diagnostic tests and procedures) to address the root cause of whatever cycle-related issue the woman is facing, restoring her cycle, her fertility, and her health in the process. This is authentic women’s health, and the Biden administration is trying to take it away. After decades of misinformation from public health authorities like the CDC and HHS, falsely equating modern, biomarker-based methods of fertility awareness with “the rhythm method,” it was an exciting day for many in 2016 when HHS recognized FABMs for the valid, effective methods of family planning they truly are. Likewise, there was progress to be celebrated when HHS required FABM instruction to be covered by insurance in the same way other family planning methods are.

Ukrainian forces hit drilling platforms of oil company Chernomornefteg

The Ukrainian military attacked the drilling platforms of the oil company Chernomorneftegaz on Monday, Crimean Head Sergey Aksenov said, adding that several workers are missing following the incident.

"This morning the enemy struck at the drilling platforms of Chernomorneftegaz. I am in touch with colleagues from the Ministry of Defense and the FSB [the Federal Security Service], we are working to save people," Aksenov wrote on his Telegram page.

Texas GOP adopts anti-LGBTQ platform, refers to being gay as ‘abnormal’

The Texas Republican party adopted a new platform on Saturday that refers to homosexuality as “abnormal” and “opposes all efforts to validate transgender identity.”

The Texas GOP party adopted the 40-page platform at its biennial convention in Houston after passing the party’s new guiding principles, which includes a section titled “Homosexuality and Gender Issues.”

The section includes a formal position declaring the state’s GOP party is against giving a special legal status to gay men or women and that they support people who oppose homosexuality based on faith, religion or a belief in “traditional values.”

“Homosexuality is an abnormal lifestyle choice,” the platform document reads. “We believe there should be no granting of special legal entitlements or creation of special status for homosexual behavior, regardless of state of origin.”

The section also opposes the use of public funds for homosexuality, transgender or diversity and equity inclusion centers as well as for gender-affirming care — while supporting controversial counseling methods intended to “convert” members of the LGBTQ community. Texas does not have a law banning conversion therapy.

A wave of anti-LGBTQ bills have flooded red states this year, with Republican-leading majorities specifically targeting the transgender community.

Texas has passed laws banning the participation of transgender youth in sports and prohibiting the discussion of sexual orientation or transgender identity in public schools. The Movement Advancement Project gives Texas a low rating for LGBTQ rights.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) drew backlash earlier this year when he ordered state officials to investigate parents of transgender children who allow their child to undergo gender-affirming care, which the state’s attorney general Ken Paxton called “child abuse.”

Israeli 'opposition' planning to disperse Knesset, holding elections

Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is spearheading an attempt by the "opposition" to disperse the Knesset, and the camp will bring a draft resolution for a vote on the matter on Wednesday, which will also entail holding fresh elections, Israeli media reported on Monday.

The former premier has been very vocal about his plans of toppling Bennett's cabinet, forcing the Israeli occupation into fresh elections, and possibly returning as Prime Minister for the third time. He held this post from 1996 to 1999 and then from 2009 until June 2021.

The legislation would need a majority of 61 MKs out of the body's 120 members to pass.

It is unlikely that the Likud has already decided to propose the bill for a preliminary vote this week, according to Israeli Channel 12, as the bloc wants to ensure that the bill would pass, otherwise, his plans on toppling Naftali Bennett's government would be suspended. Netanyahu, and anyone else for that matter, would be unable to propose a similar bill for another six months.

Netanyahu's Likud had planned on bringing the bill for a vote last month, but it postponed the proposal after the Ra'am party went back to the Bennett-Lapid coalition in the Knesset. Ra'am's decision deprived the opposition of having a simple majority that would have allowed for the passing of the bill.

With former Yamina member Nir Orbach pledging to vote against any bill aimed at toppling the government after leaving the party last week, the "opposition's" chances at securing a majority for their bill are incredibly low.

Orbach could have to go back on his promise and support the bill, according to reports.

However, in addition to Orbach, Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked has said she was also opposed to the amendment to "Israel's semi-constitutional Basic Laws" authored by Israeli "Justice" Minister Gideon Sa'ar.

This comes amid reports that Prime Minister Naftali Bennett is under pressure from his coalition partners to propose a bill that would bar any MK charged with a "serious crime" from becoming Prime Minister, which is clearly aimed at Benjamin Netanyahu.

If the said bill passes in the Knesset, former premier Benjamin Netanyahu would be barred from ever assuming the premiership again, Channel 12 reported.

The proposed amendment would block any lawmaker indicted for a crime that holds a minimum sentence of three years and "moral turpitude" from being tasked by the president with forming a cabinet.

The coalition led by Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett had taken a hit, becoming a minority in Parliament after legislator Ghaida Rinawie Zoabi dropped out of the Knesset in late May for several reasons. She mainly cited the Israeli occupation police brutality perpetrated against Palestinians at journalist Shireen Abu Akleh's funeral.

The Meretz party MK leaving Bennett's coalition set it back to 59 out of 120 seats in the Knesset, making the coalition a minority, though that does not necessarily mean that the alliance is on the verge of collapse.

Biden under fire for planning to visit Saudi Arabia next month, with critics resurfacing story of slain dissident.

A day after the White House announced President Biden will visit Saudi Arabia next month, the street in front of the Saudi embassy in Washington, D.C. was renamed for Jamal Khashoggi, the slain Saudi dissident who was a columnist for the Washington Post.

Supporters hailed Wednesday's unveiling of a street sign reading "Jamal Khashoggi Way" to honor a man described as a champion of freedom and democracy, echoing the praise heaped on Khashoggi by political elites and mainstream media outlets following his 2018 death.

The ceremonial designation for the block that houses the Saudi embassy will serve as "a constant reminder, a memorial to Jamal Khashoggi's memory that cannot be covered up," said Phil Mendelson, chairman of the D.C. Council, which voted unanimously for the name change.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved an operation that resulted in Khashoggi's murder at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, according to a U.S. intelligence assessment released last year.

On Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden agrees with the conclusion of that assessment.

"Through his journalism, Jamal Khashoggi was a fierce advocate for democracy, human rights, and the rule of law," said D.C. Council member Brooke Pinto, who introduced the bill to rename the street.

"He knew that by shining a light on Saudi Arabia and seeking truth, he risked his freedom and indeed his life … everyone who visits the embassy in Washington, D.C. will be reminded of Mr. Khashoggi’s courage, and the indispensable values of free speech and a free and independent press."

Beyond the image of a martyred journalist who died defending democratic values, however, critics argue there is another side to Khashoggi's story that has received less attention — one that reveals a political operative who rubbed elbows with extremists and held anti-Western views.

This full picture, according to experts who spoke to Just the News, raises questions about the decision to honor Khashoggi with a street sign in the nation's capital.

Putting a man who wrote and spoke "glowingly" of Osama bin Laden "on the same level as some of the men and women who have founded and served the United States is a particularly embarrassing travesty," said Kyle Shideler, director for homeland security and counterterrorism at the Center for Security Policy.

Shideler was alluding to the fact that Khashoggi was a close friend of bin Laden, and said that he cried when the al Qaeda leader was confirmed dead in May 2011.

"I just fell apart crying heartbreak to you, Abu Abdullah," Khashoggi tweeted in Arabic hours after the U.S. raid that killed bin Laden, referring to him by his nom de guerre when fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

"You were beautiful, brave in those beautiful days in Afghanistan before you succumbed to anger and passion."

Media: Bennett, Lapid to dissolve Knesset, hold early elections

The Israeli occupation government coalition announced its intention to dissolve the parliament (the Knesset) while the occupation's foreign minister, Yair Lapid, will become a caretaker prime minister, in place of Naftali Bennett during the transitional period before heading for early elections.

The Times of Israel said that it is expected that the early elections will be held at the end of October.

Israeli Maariv newspaper described the scene on its website as a "Political Drama," revealing that after the dissolution of the Knesset is approved next week, the rotation of the position between Bennet and Lapid will take place.

According to the newspaper, Lapid will be the caretaker Prime Minister for the meantime while "holding the Iranian file."

The newspaper pointed out that "the agreed date for the early elections is October 25, 2022."

Israeli media, quoting both sides, stated that the decision "was taken after exhausting attempts to achieve stability in the coalition," and that "Prime Minister Naftali Bennett is now speaking with the heads of the parties."

Earlier in the day, Israeli media revealed that Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is spearheading an attempt by the "opposition" to disperse the Knesset, and the camp will bring a draft resolution for a vote on the matter on Wednesday, which will also entail holding fresh elections.

The former premier has been very vocal about his plans of toppling Bennett's cabinet, forcing the Israeli occupation into fresh elections, and possibly returning as Prime Minister for the third time. He held this post from 1996 to 1999 and then from 2009 until June 2021.

The legislation would need a majority of 61 MKs out of the body's 120 members to pass.

This comes amid reports that Prime Minister Naftali Bennett is under pressure from his coalition partners to propose a bill that would bar any MK charged with a "serious crime" from becoming Prime Minister, which is clearly aimed at Benjamin Netanyahu.

The coalition led by Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett had taken a hit, becoming a minority in Parliament after legislator Ghaida Rinawie Zoabi dropped out of the Knesset in late May for several reasons. She mainly cited the Israeli occupation police brutality perpetrated against Palestinians at journalist Shireen Abu Akleh's funeral.

The Lethality of the Global Monroe Doctrine

This month, as part of its policy to dominate the American hemisphere, the United States government organized the 9th Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles.

U.S. President Joe Biden made it clear early on that three countries in the hemisphere — Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela — would not be invited to the event, claiming that they are not democracies.

At the same time, Biden was reportedly planning a visit to Saudi Arabia – a self-described theocracy. Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador questioned the legitimacy of Biden’s exclusionary stance, and so Mexico, Bolivia, and Honduras refused to come to the event. As it turned out, the summit was a fiasco.

Down the road, over a hundred organizations hosted a People’s Summit for Democracy, where thousands of people from across the hemisphere gathered to celebrate the actual democratic spirit which emerges from the struggles of peasants and workers, students and feminists, and all the people who are excluded from the gaze of the powerful.

At this gathering, the presidents of Cuba and Venezuela joined in online to celebrate this festival of democracy and to condemn the weaponization of democratic ideals by the United States and its allies.

Next year, 2023, will be the bicentennial of the Monroe Doctrine, when the U.S. asserted its hegemony over the American hemisphere. The malign spirit of the Monroe Doctrine not only continues but has now been extended by the U.S. government into a kind of Global Monroe Doctrine.

In order to assert this preposterous claim on the entire planet, the United States has pursued a policy to “weaken” what it sees as “near peer rivals,” namely China and Russia.

In July, Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research — along with Monthly Review and No Cold War — will produce a booklet on the reckless military escalation by the U.S. government against those whom it sees as its adversaries — mainly China and Russia. It will include essays by John Bellamy Foster, editor of Monthly Review, Deborah Veneziale, a journalist based in Italy, and John Ross, a member of the No Cold War collective. In the vein of that booklet, No Cold War has also produced Briefing No. 3, “Is the United States Preparing for War with Russia and China?” on Washington’s sabre-rattling and alarming march toward nuclear primacy.

US prepares to rule regarding abortion

By the end of June, the Supreme Court is anticipated to issue a judgment that could reverse a 50-year course regarding abortion in the United States. This is the state of events in the country as the nation's highest court prepares to issue its much-anticipated ruling.

Roe v. Wade

In the absence of federal legislation, the 1973 decision in the landmark Supreme Court case known as Roe v. Wade secures a woman's right to abortion in the United States.

Planned Parenthood v. Casey, a 1992 court ruling, maintains access to abortion until "viability", or when the fetus can survive outside the womb, which occurs between 22 and 24 weeks of pregnancy.

States are also prohibited from enacting legislation that would place an "undue burden" on a woman seeking an abortion. This legal foundation could be overturned very soon.

According to a draft opinion released in May, the court's conservative majority is ready to overturn Roe v. Wade.

"We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled," the author of the opinion, Justice Samuel Alito, wrote. "It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people's elected representatives."

Anticipating a reversal, lawmakers in 13 Republican-controlled states have already passed legislation that would prohibit abortion if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.

Patchwork

Conservative states refer to the notion of "undue burden" to impose abortion restrictions, forcing numerous clinics to close their doors.

West Virginia and Mississippi, for example, each have one abortion clinic, whereas California has more than 150.

Some states require adolescents to obtain parental consent before having an abortion or listening to the embryo's heartbeat.

Following a lengthy court battle, Texas has prohibited abortions after six weeks, when many women are unaware they are pregnant. Another consideration is money.

Almost a dozen states prohibit private medical insurance plans from covering abortions. However, 15 additional states use public funding to assist low-income women in paying for the surgery.

Poverty and minorities

According to the Guttmacher Institute's most current statistics, there were more than 930,000 abortions in the United States in 2020, following a 30-year drop.

This equates to 14.4 abortions for every 1,000 women of reproductive age, which is comparable to most developed countries.

Nearly half of the women seeking abortions are poor, and Black and Hispanic women are overrepresented as a percentage of the population – 29 percent and 25 percent, respectively.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 92.2% of abortions in the United States occur during the first trimester.

Divided opinion

According to a Pew Research Center poll, more than 60% of Americans believe abortion should be allowed in all or most situations, a figure that has remained largely consistent in recent years.

However, there are significant variances based on political affiliation: 80% of Democrats say abortion should be permitted in all or most situations, while only 35% of Republicans agree.

Moreover, the chasm is growing wider. In 2016, these ratios were 72% and 39%, respectively. Religious belief is also important. In most circumstances, 77% of white evangelicals say abortion should be prohibited.

A conservative offensive

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Republican Donald Trump drew many religious right voters with his vow to name Supreme Court justices who shared their views and were willing to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Trump nominated three justices to the Supreme Court during his four years in office, giving conservatives a 6-3 majority.

Their arrival prompted Republican state legislators to establish increasingly abortion restrictions, several of which eventually found their way to the Supreme Court.

Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin accused the UK of "economic damage". Martin was reacting to UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's desire to revamp the post-Brexit Northern Ireland Protocol, which he called the worst type of unilateralism, in a BBC interview on Sunday,

A plan tabled this week in the House of Commons would significantly alter the protocol, which presently requires customs checks on goods entering Northern Ireland from the United Kingdom. If the new bill is passed, products bound for Northern Ireland will not be subject to such checks, however, commodities bound for the Republic of Ireland via Northern Ireland will be checked and taxed at ports in the British exclave before proceeding south.

“The legislation effectively would be severely damaging to the Northern Ireland economy, particularly in the context of the dual regulatory standards approach,” Martin told the BBC, referring to the choice that Northern Irish businesses would have to make between complying with EU or UK standards.

“In effect, it represents a form of economic vandalism on Northern Ireland because if you look, any objective data is now showing that the Northern Ireland economy is doing very well,” he continued. He said that the Irish government believes that the new legislation “is very, very worrying in terms of the actual damage it could do to key sectors of Northern Ireland economy.”

The British government claims that a dual regulatory approach would relieve burdensome EU regulations on UK-Northern Ireland trade while avoiding the return of a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic, which would be an unwelcome reminder of the North's troubled political history.

“There are certain areas where we can improve the protocol and we should continue to do that,” Martin said, calling for “substantive negotiations between the British government and the European Union.”

Northern Ireland's unionists – those who support the country's continued membership in the United Kingdom and see the protocol as undermining their position – have threatened not to share power with the nationalist Sinn Fein party if the protocol remains in place, and Martin has been chastised for dismissing their concerns.

"From day one Dublin has done what's in Dublin's interests and never once prioritized consensus in Northern Ireland," Democratic Unionist Party MP Sammy Wilson told the BBC. "Not one unionist MP or MLA supports the protocol but instead of Dublin trying to understand or recognize our objections, they repeatedly lecture us, talk down to us and demand we change our mind.”

Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald has stated that Britain's proposal is a "breach of international law" and would undermine the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, which ended decades of conflict in Northern Ireland.

Lithuania: Ban on rail cargo transit to Kaliningrad directed by EU

Lithuanian Foreign Minister, Gabrielius Landsbergis, indicated on Monday that the ban on the railroad transit of a number of sanctioned goods through the Lithuanian territory from Russia to its exclave region of Kaliningrad was introduced after consultations with the European Commission and under its guidelines.

"It is not Lithuania doing anything, it is European sanctions that started working from June 17. The industry that is imposing the sanctions at this point is the railroads," Landsbergis said upon his arrival at the EU Foreign Affairs Council.

State-owned Lithuanian Railways stopped transit of goods between Russia and its Baltic Sea territory starting at midnight this past Friday, citing restrictions directed by the EU.

The governor of Kaliningrad, Anton Alikhanov, said that oil products are not subject to transit limitations and the transit will continue unhindered through August 10.

Andrey Klimov, the chair of the Russian upper house commission for the protection of state sovereignty, said that the EU needs to fix the situation with Kaliningrad's blockade, otherwise Russia will have a free hand to resolve the issue by any means deemed necessary.

Moscow lodges protest over Lithuania decision

In response, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed in a statement that Moscow had lodged a protest to the Lithuanian charge d'affaires in Russia in connection with the decision of Vilnius to ban rail cargo transit to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

The Ministry also summoned the Lithuanian charge d'affaires earlier in the day.

It underscored that "the head of the diplomatic mission was strongly protested in connection with the ban on the rail transit of a large range of goods through the territory of Lithuania to the Kaliningrad region, imposed by Vilnius without prior notification of the Russian side."

"We demanded the immediate lifting of these restrictions," the Russian statement affirmed, adding that Russia regards the actions of Lithuania as openly hostile and in violation of the international obligations of Vilnius.

Earlier, Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Lithuania's move to prohibit rail goods transit to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad is unprecedented, describing the move as a "violation of everything."

The current situation of ties between Russia and the United States corresponds to the lowest limit of the thermodynamic temperature scale, which is absolute zero, according to Dmitry Medvedev in an interview with Sputnik on Monday.
