Arizona lawmakers approve bill vetting voters for citizenship before they can vote

Arizona lawmakers approved new voter restrictions that supporters said ensure only U.S. citizens can cast ballots but opponents said will wipe countless voters off the state’s rolls.

A unanimous Republican caucus approved House Bill 2492 on Wednesday in the Senate, sending the legislation to Gov. Doug Ducey for consideration.

While Arizona is one of the few states that already require proof of citizenship before registering to vote, residents can bypass that by registering for a federal-only ballot under the National Voter Registration Act and can vote on federal contests.

HB 2492 would require counties to check those individuals for citizenship against multiple databases. Counties must reject any federal applications if they find the individual is not a U.S. citizen. Any official knowingly ignoring the requirement could be charged with a Class 6 felony.

Democrats accused Republicans of seeking to purge the voter rolls as revenge for the 2020 general election, where President Joe Biden narrowly defeated former President Donald Trump.

“This is absurd, illogical and discriminatory,” Sen. Sally Ann Gonzales, D-Tucson, said.

Constitutional analysts told GOP lawmakers in another hearing the bill presents some issues that could face a legal challenge. Opponents were quick to note that in debate.

“We are voting on a bill that is unconstitutional and has a tremendous impact on the voters of the state of Arizona,” Sen. Martín Quezada, D-Phoenix, said. “There are many provisions in this bill that are offensive, and that will have a negative impact on some communities more than others."

Republicans said their legislation simply ensures U.S. citizens are the only ones voting in U.S. elections.

“The issue is making sure the citizens of this country are voting,” Sen. Warren Petersen, R-Gilbert, said. “If you’re not a citizen of this country, you’re not allowed to vote. We have over 35,000 people registered to vote where we are not certain whether they’re citizens or not.”

The bill passed along partisan lines. Democrats gathered in Phoenix on Thursday to pressure Ducey to veto the legislation.

Demonic Northern Ireland Politicians Dance As ‘Safe Zone’ Ban On Prayers At Abortion Clinics Becomes Law

Green Party’s Clare Bailey is ecstatic. Her bill, the first of its kind “anywhere in both the UK and Ireland” will effectively ban the act of prayer outside abortion clinics as well as any other last-chance effort to convince women to carry their pregnancies to term.

Bailey, the leader of the Green Party of Northern Ireland, has been pushing for her Abortion Services Safe Access Zones Bill since 2016. The legislation, which now only requires a procedural rubberstamp from the queen, will make an effort to persuade women to forgo the life-terminating procedure a violation of the law—even if such effort comes in the form of offering to help, or, through prayer, is directed at God.

Celebrating the bill’s success, members of the Northern Ireland Assembly danced, screamed, and hugged each other in exuberance.

Not everyone in Assembly was happy, however. James Allister, a British Unionist member, spoke despondently about what it meant for the morals of society to not only accept the practice of abortion but also prevent any attempt to dissuade women from undergoing it.

“A woman’s womb should be the safest possible place for the unborn,” he said. “Yet, with abortion, it is the most dangerous place for the unborn, because it is there, in the womb, that, consciously, deliberately and by choice, death is visited on the unborn.”

According to the final revisions of the legislation, a constable will be authorized to warn, order the removal of, or use the necessary force to remove violators in the “safe zone.”

Actions that will be considered in violation of the law include influencing women seeking abortion directly or indirectly, impeding access, recording audio or video of women who are within the safe zone, or harassment. Due to the incredibly broad array of actions that might indirectly influence a woman within the safe zone, actions such as prayer for the end of abortion or for the souls of the unborn would be in violation of this law.

Those who violate the law will be fined up to £1,000.

Those who refuse to vacate the premises or resist enforcement of the law will receive a summary conviction and fine not exceeding £5,000.

Biden Hints at War With Russia During U.S. Troop Talk on Ukraine: ‘You’re Gonna See WHEN You’re There’.

The Commander-in-Chief appears to be implying U.S. troop deployment, during his Poland visit.

U.S. President Joe Biden spoke to U.S. troops in Poland today, clumsily hinting at the possibility of U.S. troop deployment in Ukraine.

Speaking to members of the 82nd Airborne Division in Poland, Biden briefly discussed his own political history with Ukraine, before going on to blurt out:

“The Ukrainian people have a lot of backbone. Have a lot of guts. And I’m sure you’re observing it. And I don’t mean just the military, we’ve been training back since when Russia moved in… and and… the south east, um, Ukraine. But also the average citizen. Look at how they’re stepping up. And you’re going to see when you’re there, and some of you have been there. You’re going to see women, young people standing in the middle, in the front of a damn tank saying I’m not leaving. I’m holding my ground. They’re incredible.”

Joe Bidens words have already caused consternation online, raising questions about possible U.S. troop deployment into Ukraine. Others speculation that Biden may have been speaking out of turn or misspeaking, as is often the case with the aging U.S. President.

The news comes a day after news broke of Biden’s son Hunter and his deep links to Ukrainian biolabs which just weeks ago the corporate media derided as “conspiracy theories.”

Have you heard about Aperture 2025?

It may sound like a Roland Emmerich sci-fi movie, but it’s actually more frightening. And much more controversial. It’s the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’s latest initiative to make Hollywood more equitable and diverse—more woke—by changing the rules by which films are eligible for Best Picture nominations. Here’s how it works: Starting in 2024, producers will be required to submit a summation of the race, gender, sexual orientation, and disability status of members of their movie’s cast and crew. If a particular movie does not have enough people of color or disabled people or gays or lesbians working on the set—and what is “enough” will be determined by a knotty tangle of byzantine formularies—then that movie will no longer be eligible for an Oscar.

Not surprisingly, the plan is not being universally applauded in Hollywood. Critics say it’s invasive, anticreative, opens the door to privacy issues, and is spectacularly unfair to actors and crew members, who may want to keep their sexual orientation or health profiles to themselves, not to mention to producers and directors who have enough to worry about while shooting a movie than to be saddled with the thankless task of tallying up the identity markers of their creative partners.

“I mean, why aren’t animals in this?” sneers one industry insider. “What if the main character is a horse?”

Unfortunately, Aperture 2025 isn’t the only Academy initiative to recently raise eyebrows in Hollywood. In February, Oscar organizers triggered a civil war in Hollywood over a plan to pretape many of the below-the-line categories—film editing, makeup and hairstyling, original score, production design, the short-film selections—and roll edits of those awards into the live broadcast. Predictably, many Academy members (especially film editors, makeup and hairstylists, and production designers) balked at the change, but at least that one was designed to address an actual existential threat to the ceremony: that it’s become so long and boring that huge swaths of the audience have begun tuning out.

“The Academy was out of touch with the public when it was mostly white, and it remained so when it became somewhat less white.”

Last year, the Oscars drew an all-time low of 9.85 million viewers—less than what an episode of The Big Bang Theory used to get. Granted, the pandemic and the resulting dearth of theatrical releases contributed to the decline, but the truth is, Oscar ratings began plummeting long before COVID-19. At its height in the 1990s, the ceremony was pulling in as many as 55 million viewers in the United States. Even into the 2000s, it was drawing at least 40 million. But by the 2010s, the numbers started falling into the 30 millions and, by that decade’s end, had dropped further, into the 20 millions. The audience for the last pre-pandemic Oscars, in February 2020, was 23.6 million, less than half of its one-time peak.

There’s no shortage of theories to explain why viewers are turning off to the Oscars: The shrinking of movie actors as cultural icons (as TikTok and Instagram stars become the ascendant media gods); the reluctance of the Academy to update the ceremony, which has remained substantially unchanged since it was first broadcast in 1953; the growing chasm between the esoteric tastes of the Academy’s voting members (who this year nominated Drive My Car, a Japanese drama about a grieving theater director putting on a production of Uncle Vanya in Hiroshima) and the preferences of the wider theatergoing public (who likes Spider-Man).

Whatever the reason, the conclusion is inescapable: The Oscars are tanking. And no matter how well-intentioned Aperture 2025 may be, the initiative isn’t going to fix that problem. On the contrary, at this rate, by 2025, filmmakers with even the most equitable and diverse sets may not give a damn whether their films are eligible for an Oscar or not because hardly anyone will be watching.

Nothing to See Here! Kremlin Declares Everything Going ‘According to Plan’ in Ukraine

On the one-month anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin’s forces, the Kremlin claimed that everything is going “according to plan” and that life is “returning to normal” for the areas “liberated” by Russia.

Despite reports of heavy losses for the world’s fifth-largest military, allegedly including numerous generals killed in the field, as well as a recent high-profile defection from a Putin advisor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has claimed that all is going as planned in the so-called “special military operation” in Ukraine.

“Exactly one month since the start of the special military operation in Ukraine; it is going according to plan, and all the stated goals will be achieved,” Zakharova said per the official account for the MFA on Twitter.

“Life is returning to normal in the territories already liberated from nationalists,” the diplomat added.

Russia has so far failed to secure the breakaway regions in the Donbas — which border Russia and have long been controlled by Russian mercenaries and separatists — with fighting continuing to rage in Donetsk and Luhansk. Prior to the invasion, Russian leader Vladimir Putin recognised the two eastern Ukrainian regions as independent.

Though Russia launched a multi-pronged invasion on the 25th of March, some Western officials have said that Putin may abandon his efforts to take Kyiv (Kiev) and on the other fronts in the west of Ukraine in order to consolidate the Russian Armed Forces efforts in the Donbas.

“I think what’s clear is that the original Russian plan of being able to have three separate [axes] of manoeuvre, operate them all simultaneously, and achieve their objectives quickly has been frustrated. So whilst we’ll see continued bombardment of key cities, I think it likely that we’ll see a concentration of manoeuvre operations in the east,” a Western official told The Times of London.

British intelligence has also claimed that there is a “realistic” situation in which Russian soldiers “facing considerable supply and morale issues” might be encircled and potentially routed by Ukrainian forces surrounding Kyiv.

It is currently unclear exactly how many Russian soldiers have died during the invasion, though a NATO official has claimed that the death toll likely stands between 7,000 and 15,000, with up to 40,000 either captured, missing, wounded, or killed.

Russia, for its part, has only officially admitted to 498 deaths. However, on Sunday, a pro-Kremlin paper Komsomolskaya Pravda published a quickly deleted article on its website claiming that 9,861 Russian soldiers have died so far. The paper went on to assert that it was hacked. Ukrainian state media has claimed that around 15,300 Russians have been killed in the fighting.

Reports have also indicated that as many as 20 Russian generals have died in the field — however, this figure is unconfirmed and widely disputed, with Putin only admitting to the death of one general to date.

Whoopi Goldberg Demands British Royal Family Apologise for Empire, Slavery

American chatshow host Whoopi Goldberg has called for the British royal family to apologise for the British Empire and its role in the slave trade.

Caryn Johnson, who uses the stage name Whoopi Goldberg, demanded the royals atone for historic British colonialism and accused Britain of running “ram shod [sic] over India for years.”

“Let us not forget when we talk about what needs to happen, all the folks that need to apologise,” Goldberg told the audience of The View.

Goldberg went on to incorrectly suggest that Prince Charles had previously apologised for slavery during his trip to Barbados in November 2021, claiming this was his way of “releasing the hold that Britain has” over Barbados.

However, while the Prince of Wales acknowledged “the appalling atrocity of slavery” he did not apologise for it, GB News reports — perhaps unsurprisingly, given he was born in 1948, well over 100 years after abolition.

The 66-year-old chatshow host’s comments come after Prince William and his wife faced protests calling for the removal of Queen Elizabeth II as Jamaica’s head of state during their visit to the island nation as part of a royal tour celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Protestors held provocative anti-royal signs including messages such as “Go back home”, “Princesses and Princes belong in fairytales… not in Jamaica”, “apologise”, and calls for reparations.

Members of the Caribbean island’s Rastafarian community also accused the royals of profiting from the “blood, tears and sweat” of Jamaican people — despite Britain having given Jamaica tens of millions of pounds worth of financial aid just since 2017.

Speaking to Breitbart London, GB News presenter Calvin Robinson lambasted Goldberg for her comments.

“Critical Race Theory is a divisive, toxic ideology that stirs up racial tensions. It’s a self-perpetuating cycle of hatred. The worst thing is, you can never be woke enough — these theories force people to attack themselves and each other”, Robinson said.

Goldberg was suspended from ABC for two weeks following outlandish remark in which she said the extermination of six million Jews in the Holocaust was “not about race”.

“Let’s be truthful, the Holocaust isn’t about race, it’s not. It’s about man’s inhumanity to man, that’s what it’s about. These are two groups of white people,” Goldberg said in what some saw as an effort to diminish the suffering faced by the Jewish people because of their perceived status as “white”.

How is CFA’s work important to you?

In my life I've always wanted to be engaged in doing something for my community and the country. Wherever I am, I feel that drive. I have worked in D.C. and took that on with great gusto. I don't really know where that comes from, but that's just something I really like.

What do you love about Arizona?

Like so many people, I love the natural beauty here. I'm a big hiker. I walk outside and it just makes me feel happy; it's so beautiful. I'm from theEast Coastand I just fell in love with the desert and I love its sense of openness. I love the sense of kind of freedom and independence. It's a welcoming place. Arizona has a fresh and open sense, but there is also rich a heritage that goes back thousands of years. There aren’t a lot of constraints on what you can imagine and do here. If you work really hard, you can actually make a difference.

What’s your story? What was your path to CFA?

In a straightforward, practical sense, I moved to Arizona with my husband who was appointed president of ASU. I had worked professionally my whole life and I was curious about what kind of professional work I could do in Arizona. The previous president of ASU, Lattie Coor, was stepping aside. Lattie and I had lunch one day and had a meeting of the minds. He had this idea for Center for the Future of Arizona. With his area of expertise and my background in public policy, it seemed like the perfect thing for me. It gave me an opportunity to get immediately engaged in the things that I love to do.

How does your work impact CFA?

My role has evolved over time since Lattie and I started CFA. At the beginning I was part of the building and conceptualization. As we started to grow, we needed to hire some staff. Now, as the leader of the organization, I set the strategic direction and make sure all the pieces come together so that we can succeed.

When did you first consider Arizona home to you?

I felt at home here pretty much right away. We moved here fromNew York Cityand I just fell in love with it. I had lived inCaliforniaand spent some time inNew Mexicobefore. I just love the dry air and the colors of the Southwest.

How do you hope to impact Arizona through your work at CFA?

I would love to see people feeling a greater attachment and love for Arizona. I think Arizonans are very independent people and that’s what attracts people here. But we also have to recognize that we have a shared interest in the future. We have all these things in common that we care about, despite our different interests and different cultures. If people could be prouder of Arizona, then we can work together to build a bright future for this state.

Massive anonymous bulletin board 2channel has played an important role on the Japanese Web for 15 years (mostly on the dark side). Riddled with gossip and rumors, the site has always kept its ownership vague to avoid legal conflict, but recently a longtime background supporter seems to be trying to shake things up — and he’s an American.

2channel (2ch) is Japan’s largest bulletin-board service, founded in 1999 by Hiroyuki Nishimura. There are boards for every conceivable subject. Because the site allows users to post anonymously, it became hugely popular as a place to vent without the usual pressure of Japan’s strict societal mores. The concept was even exported to other countries, such as with 4chan in the United States.

The new developments began after 2channel recovered from an outage on Feb. 19. An admin-only thread was created under the name “Jim,” with a message that began, “I have secured the 2ch servers.”

The post stated that the “previous management” had failed to earn sufficient money for running the servers, that his name had been slandered, and ended with the hope that “proper management” could make the site sustainable again.

So who is this “Jim”? He is Jim Watkins, an American who has been running 2channel servers in San Francisco, at his Web-server hosting company N.T. Technology. Indeed, one of the reasons it is so difficult to file claims or legal action against 2channel is that its servers are located outside Japan.

Watkins has been in ownership of BBS Pink, an adult sister site of 2channel, via N.T. Technology, and managing 2channel’s servers as well. Now he says he controls the whole site.

Indeed, the domain name 2ch.net, which Nishimura claimed to have given to Singaporean company Packet Monster Inc. in 2009, was handed over in 2012 to Race Queen Inc., a Philippines-based IT company whose contact name is Jim Watkins. So both 2channel’s servers and its domain name are under Watkins’ control. 2channel’s top page now lists Race Queen’s contact information.

So who is the “previous management” Watkins declared incapable? Some suspect a coup by Watkins against Nishimura. But this is just speculation. Around the time the site was down, Nishimura tweeted in Japanese, “Things quietly end; time has passed like this.” Assuming this tweet was even related to the takeover, it has been Nishimura’s only public action.

There is another theory that Watkins is referring to one or a few individuals at operator level. Last year the site suffered a massive leak in privacy information of its paid users. The leak included credit-card security codes, which are not supposed to be stored on the seller’s side. This incident impacted 2channel’s income, which was used to pay N.T. Technology. Watkins may be positioning himself as the lead to fix the situation.

No one wants to claim ownership of 2channel and take responsibility for lawsuits and tax issues, but for the time being, Watkins implies that he has taken over the site’s management, whether that means he is just Nishimura’s minion or aiming to be the new emperor.

Watkins set up a thread named “Let’s talk with Jim-san in operate” on 2channel to exchange ideas on what he should do to keep the site running. As Watkins does not speak Japanese, the discussions are being carried out in a mix of English and Japanese, with a lot of machine translations.

One big discussion earlier this month was about the comments-reuse policy by third parties. Matome (summary) sites select quality comments from 2channel threads to republish and generate advertising revenue, with top sites reportedly getting 100 million monthly page views. These sites siphon users away from 2channel itself, affecting the number of posts made there.

Many board users told Watkins they want tensai kinshi, which means to explicitly prohibit third parties from reusing their comments. Watkins approved this, and the policy of many popular boards were changed to reflect this from March 2.

Summary sites panicked. Since their content was taken entirely from 2channel boards, some were forced to shut down, or to cease updates, take comments from Twitter instead, and so on. Some guided their readers to other 2channel-style clone sites that have no such restrictions, such as Open-2channel. One of Japan’s largest websites, FC2, opened boards with the same name as those affected on 2channel in a bid to lure users.

However, it turned out that Watkins had misunderstand the phrase tensai kinshi to which he had agreed. He had just wanted to add “all rights reserved” as preventive warning, but got “tensai kinshi” when he tried to translate the phrase using Google Translate and made it an option for users to vote for. Once he realized his mistake, Watkins backtracked all changes on March 5, and summary sites have resumed business as usual.

This incident proves how difficult it will be to manage such a massive forum without knowing the language. If Watkins really has taken over the site, he needs to find Japanese-speaking staff. And if he has in fact been ordered by Nishimura to set foot on the minefield simply because no one else wants to be considered as a honcho in the eyes of the authorities, confusion will continue.
