China, Britain, Japan and other countries urged the World Health Organization on Monday to be very cautious about declaring the arrival of a swine flu pandemic, fearing that a premature announcement could cause worldwide panic and confusion. WHO bent to their wishes.

As the agency opened its annual meeting, WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan said she had listened carefully to the concerns of member states and would follow their instructions.

The new swine flu virus continues to spread rapidly, but the world is still short of facing a pandemic, Chan said, keeping the alert level at the currently phase 5 out of a possible 6, indicating a global outbreak is likely.

"This virus may have given us a grace period, but we do not know how long this grace period will last," Chan said. "No one can say whether this is just the calm before the storm."

At phase 6, the world has a swine flu pandemic — meaning there is an epidemic in at least two world regions.

She said WHO had not yet given manufacturers the signal to produce a specific swine flu vaccine for the new flu strain, but said it was essential that countries be very careful with their medical resources. Chan and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon meet top pharmaceutical executives on Tuesday to discuss their ability to make vaccines to fight the H1N1 strain.

"Manufacturing capacity for antiviral drugs and influenza vaccines is finite and insufficient for a world with 6.8 billion inhabitants," Chan said. "It is absolutely essential that countries do not squander these precious resources through poorly targeted measures."

About 20 companies worldwide including Sanofi-Aventis, Novartis and Baxter International currently produce flu vaccines. Making a pandemic jab could require them to cut production of vaccines for seasonal flu, which kills between 250,000 and 500,000 people a year.

In her keynote address at the opening of the annual meeting of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland yesterday, Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization, urged global cooperation and action in addressing what she said was the still very real prospect of a flu pandemic.

“This virus may have given us a grace period,” Chan declared, “but we do not know how long this grace period will last. No one can say whether this is just the calm before the storm.”

Due to the accelerated speed and volume of international travel, Chan said, the world of today is more vulnerable to the adverse effects of an influenza pandemic than it was in 1968, when the last pandemic of the Twentieth century began.

“As we are seeing right now with H1N1,” Chan explained, “ any city with an international airport is at risk of an imported case.”

The radically increased interdependence of countries amplifies the potential for economic disruption, she added.

Chan implored the assembly to take a truly global view of the crisis, and in particular warned that both for moral and medical reasons richer nations should not ignore the needs of the developing world, particularly sub-Saharan Africa and the Asian subcontinent.

“The developing world has, by far, the largest pool of people at risk for severe and fatal H1N1 infections,” she said.

Chan added that a striking feature of some of the current outbreaks is the presence of diarrhoea or vomiting in as many as 25% of cases, a highly unusual phenomenon.

If virus shedding is detected in fecal matter, this would introduce an additional route of transmission. The significance could be especially great in areas with inadequate sanitation, including crowded urban shantytowns.

Given that most of these people live in countries where health systems are already overburdened, understaffed, and poorly funded, she said, “What will happen if sudden surges in the number of people requiring care for influenza push already fragile health services over the brink? What will happen if the world sees the end of an influenza pandemic, only to find itself confronted, say, with an epidemic of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis?”

The pandemic forced the cancellation of the Gators’ opening football game. Nearly half the student body became ill.

Flash forward to this week, when UF’s student health center has seen 17 flu cases in the first days of classes. Alachua County public schools reported 18 cases of students with flu-like symptoms at 10 schools. Santa Fe College’s health center reported just two cases.

But the first week of classes could merely represent the calm before the storm.

“We certainly expect in another week or two that the activity is going to increase,” said Paul Myers, assistant director of the Alachua County Health Department.

That would follow the pattern at schools where classes started earlier in the month. Georgia Tech in Atlanta has experienced about 150 suspected cases of the H1N1 virus that is commonly called swine flu. Tampa Catholic High School has seen absentee rates around 15 percent, leading to the cancellation of a preseason football game Friday.

The possibility of a massive outbreak has led the University of South Florida to plan to close campus and conduct classes online in the event of a major outbreak.

Nancy's brother also served as Mayor of Baltimore. Nancy Pelosi became a resident of California to be with her husband.

John Pelosi's son Ron married William Newsom II's daughter Barbara.

They divorced and their son Gavin went to live with J. Paul Getty's family. At the time J. Paul Getty was reported to be the richest man in the world.

Governor Jerry Brown appointed William Newsom III to a judgeship and later to the Court of Appeals. When J. Paul Getty died, Judge Newsom helped Getty's son Gordon Getty to gain control of his father's estate by his interpretation of a state trust law in 1988.

William Newsom III resigned his position on the Court of Appeals and became the administrator of the Getty Trust. William Newsom III is the uncle of the current governor Gavin Newsom. Uncle William financed his campaign.

NEW YORK – Federal prosecutors in R. Kelly's sex trafficking case say he had sexual contact with an underage boy in addition to girls, and the government wants jurors in his upcoming sex trafficking trial to hear those claims.

Prosecutors aired a wide-ranging raft of additional allegations — but not new charges — against the R&B star in a court filing Friday. Jury selection is due to start Aug. 9 in a New York federal court for Kelly, who denies ever abusing anyone.

A message was sent Saturday to his lawyers about the additional allegations.

The Grammy Award-winning singer is charged with leading what prosecutors call a criminal enterprise of managers, bodyguards and other employees who allegedly helped him recruit women and girls for sex and pornography and to exercise a lot of control over them.

The charges involve six different women and girls, who aren't named in court filings.

Now, prosecutors would also like jurors to hear about more than a dozen other people whom the government alleges that Kelly sexually or physically abused, threatened or otherwise mistreated.

Among them, the government says, was a 17-year-old boy and aspiring musician whom Kelly met at a McDonald's in December 2006 and later invited to his Chicago studio. After asking the boy what he would do to make it in the music business, Kelly propositioned and had sexual contact with him while he was still underage, according to prosecutors' court filing.

And when Kelly was about to go on trial on child pornography charges in Chicago in 2008, the same youth told the singer he had access to a juror, and Kelly asked him to contact the juror and vouch he was a “good guy,” prosecutors wrote.

The filing doesn't say whether the youth did so. Kelly was acquitted in that case.

The boy also introduced Kelly to a 16- or 17-year-old male friend, with whom prosecutors say the singer began a sexual relationship several years later. Kelly also filmed the two youths in sexual encounters with other people, including some of Kelly's girlfriends, according to the filing.

Prosecutors wrote that the accounts of the boys and others would help show that the actual charges “were not isolated events and were part of a larger pattern.”

The multiplatinum-selling singer, born Robert Sylvester Kelly, is known for work including the 1996 hit “I Believe I Can Fly” and the cult classic “Trapped in the Closet,” a multi-part tale of sexual betrayal and intrigue.

Kelly's sex life has drawn scrutiny since the 1990s, and he currently is also facing sex-related charges in Illinois and Minnesota. He has pleaded not guilty.

Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) on Friday announced he is sponsoring a bill that would put a 10-year freeze on all immigration into the United States, arguing the pause is needed to help stem the current surge in illegal border crossings.

“We can’t have legal immigration when we have rampant illegal alien invaders. This is a threat to our national security and our economy and to our citizens,” Gosar said in a statement announcing HR 4643, a bill that seeks “to prohibit the admission of aliens to the United States for 10 years” from the date of its potential enactment.

The backdrop for Gosar’s initiative is the border surge, with federal immigration officials recently announcing that they had apprehended 188,829 people illegally crossing the southwest border in June, up from 180,034 in May. The figure includes more than 15,000 unaccompanied minors, over 55,000 family units, and over 117,000 single adults.

Gosar blamed the spike in illegal border crossings on President Joe Biden, accusing the Biden administration of “ignoring and actively assisting the violation of our federal laws, claiming that it has “literally and figuratively opened the gates and is waving hundreds of thousands of criminals into our country.”

Since taking office, Biden has reversed a number of border and asylum policies implemented by the Trump administration, including overturning the Migrant Protection Protocols, which required asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their claims were processed. Biden has also proposed an immigration bill that would provide a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants living in the United States.

Many Republicans and some analysts have blamed Biden’s rollback of Trump-era policies for fueling the border surge, arguing that stricter rules around border security and asylum admissions serve to deter would-be illegal immigrants from trying to enter the United States.

“With the destruction of President Trump’s solid immigration enforcement, and current disregard and violation of existing federal law, Mr. Biden has unleashed the most severe border and humanitarian crisis in United States history,” Gosar alleged.

Biden and members of his administration have rejected the notion that his policies are fueling a surge in illegal immigration. They also dispute the characterization of the problem as a “crisis,” instead calling it a “challenge” that they insist the administration is working to tackle by way of a multi-pronged approach that puts a strong emphasis on addressing the root causes of migration.

“The United States is also a country with borders and with laws that must be enforced. Securing our borders does not require us to ignore the humanity of those who seek to cross them. The opposite is true. We cannot solve the humanitarian crisis at our border without addressing the violence, instability, and lack of opportunity that compel so many people to flee their homes,” Biden said in a Feb. 2 executive order on establishing a “comprehensive regional framework” to manage migration in Central and North America.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who Biden tasked with leading the effort to tackle the issue of illegal immigration, on June 25 visited the border, after weeks of criticism from Republicans for not doing so. While there, she reiterated the administration’s view on the need to address the factors driving people to leave their homes.

“The work that we have to do is the work of addressing the root causes, otherwise we’ll continue to see the effect, what is happening at the border,” Harris said. “It’s going to require, as we have been doing, a comprehensive approach that acknowledges each piece of this.”

Immigration has been a weak spot for Biden, with a poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research in May showing that 54 percent of Americans disapproved of his handling of the issue.

Doctors Raise Awareness on Ivermectin Treatment for COVID-19

In an effort to help end the pandemic, an international coalition of medical experts is holding worldwide events Saturday to raise awareness about the effectiveness of ivermectin as a treatment for COVID-19.

Organizers of the World Ivermectin Day say doctors and supporters of the inexpensive FDA-approved drug will host free online and public events in over a dozen countries.

Two nonprofits—Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care (FLCCC) Alliance and the British Ivermectin Recommendation Development (BIRD) group—who have been campaigning for the off-label use of ivermectin to prevent and treat COVID-19 say the event’s focus is to let more people know that the antiparasitic drug can treat COVID-19, possibly end the pandemic, and help eliminate fear of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus.

“We have an incredibly positive and uplifting message to share: ivermectin treats and prevents COVID and it is the key to unlocking the never-ending cycle of pandemic peaks and personal restrictions and will help restart economies,” Dr. Tess Lawrie, cofounder of the BIRD group said in a press release.

Lawrie is also a co-author of a peer-reviewed meta-analysis study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics that found ivermectin to be effective against COVID-19, the disease caused by the CCP virus. Lawrie and her team concluded with a moderate level of confidence that ivermectin reduced the risk of death by an average of 62 percent, at a 95 percent confidence interval of 0.19-0.73, especially when prescribed early.

FLCCC Alliance also conducted their own review of 18 randomized controlled trials on COVID-19 treatment with ivermectin. They found “large, statistically significant reductions in mortality, time to clinical recovery, and time to viral clearance.” The authors also said that studies on the prevention of COVID-19 reported significantly reduced risks of the disease with regular use of the drug.

Members of the FLCCC Alliance have developed various protocols for the prevention and early treatment of COVID-19, instead of having patients wait until they develop a severe illness to receive treatment at the hospital. These treatment protocols including one for the management of long COVID are being used globally.

The current standard protocol for COVID-19 positive patients is to isolate at home, avoid dehydration, rest, and take over-the-counter medications for fever, headache, cough, and body pain.

According to updated guidance from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 and who are at high risk of disease progression, are recommended to take a monoclonal antibody if hospitalization or supplemental oxygen is not required.

Despite evidence showing ivermectin may treat all stages of COVID-19 and reduce death and hospitalization as a result of its anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties, the FDA has not approved its use, saying that the drug isn’t an anti-viral. The federal regulator issued a warning that people should not take ivermectin intended for horses as the larger doses may be harmful to humans.

The NIH has not changed its neutral stance on the use of ivermectin to treat COVID-19, while the World Health Organization (WHO) does not recommend the use of the drug except in a clinical study. Both organizations cite insufficient data for not making a recommendation.
