Texas passes law to make abortion a felony if Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade
Lawmakers in the Republican-controlled Texas Legislature have passed a so-called "trigger" bill that would criminalize performing an abortion in the state should the Supreme Court decide to overturn Roe v. Wade.
The bill, H.B. 1280, which stipulates that state residents "may not knowingly perform, induce, or attempt an abortion," received final approval from the state Senate on Tuesday and is now on its way to Republican Gov. Greg Abbott's desk.
The bill is scheduled to take effect "to the extent permitted" 30 days after Roe v. Wade is either "wholly or partly" overturned.
Once in effect, those performing an abortion in the state will be committing a second-degree felony and be subjected to a civic penalty of at least $100,000. Furthermore, should the unborn child die as a result of the offense, the crime escalates to a first-degree felony which, according to the Dallas Morning News, could carry up to a life sentence in prison.
There are no exceptions in the bill for pregnancies that result from rape or incest, however, some narrow exceptions exist for pregnant women who face medical emergencies.
Why does it matter?
The legislation anticipates a pro-life ruling from the ideologically conservative Supreme Court when it takes up a case about abortion this fall, or perhaps in subsequent cases.
The court announced earlier this month that it had agreed to hear arguments this fall in a dispute over a Mississippi law that bans virtually all abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, is the first to make it to the nation's top court from an onslaught of state laws passed by Republicans in recent years which were designed to challenge Roe v. Wade.
The court's decision to hear the case sets up a key showdown that many pro-life advocates believe could result in a major rollback of abortion rights.

The legislature's approval of the bill came less than a week after another pro-life measure restricting abortion was signed into law in the state.
Last Wednesday, Gov. Abbott signed into law a bill that prohibits abortions as early as six weeks, or once a fetal heartbeat is detected, and empowers nearly any private citizen to sue abortion providers or anyone who "aids or abets" an abortion.

Although it’s still not available on OSCN, we acquired a copy of the divorce petition he filed on 5/21/21.
In the document, he claims “that a state of complete and irreconcilable incompatibility has arisen” and that it’s “destroyed the legitimate aims of the marriage.”

According to the Ogle Mole Network, it looks like the “irreconcilable incompatibility” issues have something to do with Mike Hunter being a philanderer, and having a semi-open affair with a state employee!
Yep, that’s right – a conservative, family-values Oklahoma politician was cheating on his wife with a state employee! Say it with me now – “Imagine that!”

ExxonMobil dealt a defeat as activist hedge fund's nominees win board seats
ExxonMobil announced on Wednesday that preliminary vote estimates indicate that shareholders have elected two Engine No. 1 nominees to sit on the oil giant's board of directors, a result that represents a defeat for Exxon.

Venezuela’s Maduro receives harsh economic blow from an unlikely source: China
A recently approved Chinese tax might translate into a severe economic blow to the Nicolás Maduro regime by almost doubling the importing cost of the oil that Venezuela sells in violation of the U.S. sanctions, analysts said.
The Chinese government is set to start collecting the $30 to $40 per barrel tax on June 12, in a step announced as an environmental measure that penalizes the imports on the part of private refineries of the dirty and extra heavy so-called bitumen mix, sold mostly by Iran, Canada and Venezuela.
China for years has been a major creditor to the Venezuelan regime, providing in the last few years more than $54 billion in loans, of which the South American country still owes more than a third.
But immersed in the worst economic crisis in its history and isolated by economic sanctions from the United States and other countries, the regime has failed to fulfill its commitments.
“Venezuela has not been a good ally, while the Chinese have been. Venezuela has not been paying China the enormous debt they have with them, nor have they even tried to get to some point where they can begin to service the debt,” said Russ Dallen, president of the investment firm Caracas Capital.

Dr. Marty Makary, appeared for an interview on “The Vince Coglianese Show” Tuesday to talk about immunity from the coronavirus. As a professor at Johns Hopkins Medical school, Makary said the total disregard for natural immunity is “one of the biggest failures of our current medical leadership.”
Many representatives in the House, along with three senators, have refused the vaccine, because they’re immune since they’ve already been infected. They faced criticism over their decision. Makary stood up for these lawmakers, saying they’re being “reasonable.”
“Natural immunity works,” he said. Not only does it work, but the doctor also added “It’s probably lifelong immunity.” A study in Denmark showed that 6/10ths of 1% got reinfected after already having the virus.

Operation Deja Vu: Cuyahoga County authorities announce 31 arrests in child sex crime investigation
The operation was conducted from May 19-22, which resulted in suspects from five different counties ranging in age from 20 to 80.
CLEVELAND — Authorities announced details Wednesday of "Operation Deja Vu," which resulted in 31 arrests from May 19-22 with suspects ranging in age from 20 to 80.
Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O'Malley says the suspects came from five different counties "in an attempt to engage in sexual activities with minors."
David Frattare, Ohio ICAC Task Force Commander, says the suspects were involved in sexually explicit online conversations with people they believed were under the age of 16.
"These individuals initiated these conversations through a number of popular social media applications that children are known to use," Frattare said during a press conference Wednesday. "They then expressed an interest in engaging in sexually explicit activity with these children, a number of whom then sent or disseminated images of their genitals to what they believed were these minor children.”
Authorities also shared multiple videos from the operation in which suspects were arrested, which you can watch in the video at the bottom of this story.
The charges from "Operation Deja Vu" were listed as follows:
31 suspects charged with attempted unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, importuning and possessing criminal tools.
4 suspects charged with compelling prostitution.
2 suspects charged with disseminating matter harmful to juveniles.
1 suspect charged with carrying a concealed weapon.
1 suspect charged with failure to comply.
These charges will be presented to a Cuyahoga County Grand Jury.

Newly Released OLC Memo Shows Staff Lawyers Found No Basis For Obstruction Charges In Mueller Report
The long-awaited, though partial, release of a memorandum from the Justice Department this week left many “frustrated,” as predicted by the Washington Post, in Washington. The reason is what it did not contain. Critics had sought the memo as the “smoking gun” to show how former Attorney General Bill Barr scuttled any obstruction charges against Donald Trump. Instead, the memo showed the opposite. The staff of the OLC actually found that the allegations did not meet the standard of obstruction even without any defenses or privileges related to Trump’s office.
The issue of obstruction of justice ran throughout Barr’s second term as Attorney General. Before his confirmation hearing, a memo was released that Barr wrote to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on a potentially serious flaw in the use of the most likely federal provision on obstruction of justice against Trump. Barr was hammered by Democratic senators on his view of obstruction, as was I when I testified the next day as a witness. I agreed with many of the flaws noted by Barr in the memo.
Barr’s more nuanced arguments were drowned out by a long litany of experts like Harvard Professor Laurence Tribe who publicly insisted that obstruction was not only clearly established (with a long litany of other crimes) but that Barr’s rejection of that crime was evidence of his raw partisanship. In a public letter to me, Ralph Nader, Lou Fisher, and Bruce Fein stated that his rejection of obstruction was akin to “a papal encyclical that President Trump was innocent of obstruction of justice” that ignored Mueller’s “chronicle [of] multiple instances of evidence of obstruction.”
Throughout this never-ending barrage, Barr remained largely silent on the internal review of the matter and declined to release the full OLC memo. That only increased speculation that Barr must be hiding countervailing conclusions of legal staff. We know now that (at least the now disclosed portion of) the memo supports Barr’s prior view and, despite that fact, he withheld the information out of concern for the confidentiality of the internal deliberations.
It turns out that the review and debate over the obstruction allegations began before Barr started as Attorney General. The memo also confirms that the Mueller staff was part of that analysis with career prosecutors at Main Justice. The memo states that the prosecutors reviewed the Mueller evidence and concluded that the evidence “examined by the Special Counsel could not, as a matter of law, support an obstruction charge under the circumstances. Accordingly, were there no constitutional barriers, we would recommend, under the Principles of Federal Prosecution, that you decline to commence such a prosecution.” In plain English, that means that the prosecutors came to the same conclusion as Barr that the alleged conduct did not satisfy the elements of this crime. Moreover, it stated that it would recommend against such a charge even without consideration of any constitutional barriers presented by Trump’s office.

Dr. Anthony Fauci would not commit to asking President Joe Biden to declassify the investigation of COVID-19’s origin when questioned by Republican Sen. Mike Braun, despite asserting support of transparency.
In a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing Wednesday, Fauci faced questions on the recent news that Biden shut down and covered up an investigation into whether the novel coronavirus was leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, rather than the previously reported natural origin, possibly in a Chinese wet market.
After Fauci expressed support for “transparency” from the government, Braun suggested the research and information be declassified. Although he agreed that there was a clear need for further investigation which ought to be openly shared with the American people, Fauci demurred about whether he would advise Biden to declassify the information surrounding the aborted investigation, saying “I don’t think I can promise you that.”
Braun noted that, if the request does not come from a senior adviser like Fauci, who has been involved in the White House’s COVID team from the start, the public will never know the currently classified information.
“We owe it to the American people, with what we’ve been through, to at least took at the information we have,” Braun said.

Trump Enlists Gingrich to Draft New 'Contract With America'
Former President Donald Trump has enlisted former Republican House Speaker and 2012 presidential candidate Newt Gingrich to design a policy agenda that Republicans can use to win back control of Congress in 2022.
Politico reported Tuesday that Trump invited Gingrich, his former chief of staff Mark Meadows, and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) to join him at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida and begin work on a new version of the "Contract with America" for Republicans to rally behind in the upcoming midterm elections. The document will attempt to transform the "America First" principles of Trump's presidential campaigns into "a policy priority for 2022 and beyond" on everything from trade to immigration.
Gingrich told Politico in an interview that the document won't be ready "anytime soon" but he did make suggestions about what it should look like.
"It should be positive," Gingrich said. "School choice, teaching American history for real, abolishing the '1619 Project,' eliminating critical race theory and what the Texas legislature is doing. We should say, 'Bring it on.'"
Under Gingrich's leadership in 1994, Republicans crafted the "Contract with America," a set of policies and laws they promised to vote on if they won control of the House of Representatives. That year Republicans won 52 seats in the House and nine seats in the Senate, a revolution that forced President Bill Clinton to moderate and work with Congress to reform welfare, balance the budget, and get tough on crime.
That Trump would recruit Gingrich for a new contract-style agenda suggests that in exile from Washington, D.C., and with 2022 and 2024 in view, the former president is attempting to build what his previous campaigns for the presidency lacked: A policy platform every Republican could run on.
Trump's vague promises to "Make America Great Again" during his two campaigns for president worked as slogans that rallied his supporters but never translated into a governing agenda for the Republican Party. The ex-president's skepticism of free trade, opposition to reforming entitlement programs, and focus on border security and culture war issues was never fully embraced by establishment Republicans. The result was that the major victories Trump won for his base were accomplished via executive order, and subsequently undone by President Joe Biden.
The Trump presidency secured few major legislative victories. Efforts to keep the Republican Party's longstanding promise to repeal and replace Obamacare failed miserably, and Trump's inability to rally legislators around a unified health care plan was a factor in that failure. Even with Republicans in complete control of Congress from 2016 to 2018, the government spent $2.3 trillion — more than President Obama spent during his first two years in office.
Trump's greatest legislative achievement was the 2017 tax cut, which reduced the corporate tax rate and doubled the child tax credit. But it's easy to rally Republicans around cutting taxes, and the 2017 law fell far short of transformational tax reforms supported by conservatives.
Perhaps the greatest evidence of Trump's previous neglect of policy and disunity in the GOP was the Republican National Committee's inability to create a platform during the 2020 presidential election.
A new "Contract with America"-style campaign agenda could unite Trump-supporting Republicans and provide a blueprint for what a governing agenda will look like. Concrete promises might become concrete legislative accomplishments, as they did in 1994.
But it remains to be seen if the Republican Party, let alone the American people, will support those promises.

‘School of Rock’ actor Kevin Clark dead at 32, hit by car while biking
Kevin Clark, the child actor who played Freddy “Spazzy McGee” Jones in the 2003 film “School of Rock,” died after being fatally struck by a car while riding his bicycle. He was 32.
Clark was biking in the Chicago neighborhood of Avondale early Wednesday when a Hyundai Sonata struck him at 1:20 a.m., police told the Chicago Sun-Times. The driver of the vehicle — a 20-year-old woman — was issued citations in response to the incident and released, police said.
Clark had been biking home when he was killed, his sister said, according to TMZ.
Paramedics rushed him to the Illinois Masonic Medical Center but he was pronounced dead at 2:04 a.m.
In response to the news, “School of Rock” star Jack Black, 51, shared a touching tribute on Instagram, writing, “Devastating news. Kevin is gone. Way too soon. Beautiful soul. So many great memories. Heartbroken. Sending love to his family and the whole School of Rock community.”
In the post, it appeared the two had reunited in Clark’s adulthood.

Senator Warren attacks JPMorgan's Dimon over 'baloney' overdraft fees
Progressive firebrand Senator Elizabeth Warren on Wednesday attacked JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) chief executive Jamie Dimon after the country's largest lender reaped $1.46 billion in overdraft fees during 2020 while borrowers were struggling to make ends meet amid pandemic lockdowns.
Warren told Dimon during a banking industry U.S. Senate hearing that the fees were especially egregious after federal agencies and Congress gave lenders a raft of regulatory breaks to allow them to preserve capital and better help customers. JPMorgan collected more overdraft fees than its immediate competitors, Warren said. "You and your colleagues came in today to talk about how you stepped up to help your customers during the pandemic. It's a bunch of baloney," Warren told Dimon in a fiery exchange during which the pair, at times, spoke over each other. Dimon responded that JPMorgan waived overdraft fees for customers who asked. When Warren asked Dimon if the bank would refund the fees, he flatly said, "No."
After the hearing, a spokesperson for the bank said in an email response to Reuters that in 2020 the bank waived fees on over 1 million deposit accounts, including overdraft fees, "no questions asked.” The JPMorgan CEO testified alongside Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) CEO Brian Moynihan, Citigroup Inc (C.N) CEO Jane Fraser, and Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.N) CEO Charles Scharf, who also got heat from Warren for overdraft fees. Collectively, the four banks gathered $4 billion in such fees last year, Warren said. With their smaller retail businesses, Goldman Sachs Group (GS.N) CEO David Solomon and Morgan Stanley (MS.N) CEO James Gorman largely dodged Warren's wrath during their testimony.
Speaking to CNBC after the hearing, Warren, a former 2020 presidential candidate who rose to prominence during the 2008 financial crisis, said the banks had used the pandemic to "pump up their profits" and required aggressive regulation. The cost of overdrawing a checking account hit a new high in 2020, increasing to an average of $33.47, according to Bankrate, a consumer finance service. Banks say overdrafts are an important source of credit for customers, but consumer groups say the fees are usurious. The same six CEOs are due to appear before the House Financial Services Committee on Thursday as scrutiny of the industry grows under Washington's Democratic Party leadership.
Warren's attack on Dimon and overdraft fees will come as a blow to the industry which thought it had a good story to tell lawmakers after dishing out $69 billion of COVID-19 aid to struggling businesses and launching programs to tackle racial injustice and wealth inequality. But the Wall Street bosses frequently found themselves under fire from both sides of the aisle, with Democrats criticizing the banks for not doing enough to help everyday Americans, and Republicans wary of their growing support for liberal causes. Senator Sherrod Brown, a Wall Street critic who became chair of the Senate Banking Committee following Democratic gains in the 2020 election, also took a tough line, saying the banks' success navigating the pandemic was not enough. "Under the current system, Wall Street profits no matter what happens to workers, because those profits now come at the expense of workers," he told the CEOs in his opening remarks and implored them to justify their multi-million dollar paychecks and stock buy backs.
Republicans, on the other hand, criticized the banks for trying to drive social policies by limiting financing for fossil-fuel companies and gun manufacturers and by speaking out against a new Georgia voting rights law.

Chinese Paper Calls for Probe of US’ Fort Detrick Biolab Amid Wuhan Lab COVID-19 Origins Fracas
Chinese scientists sequenced the genome of SARS-CoV-2 in early January 2020 and by March of that year had “irrefutably” concluded the virus was not of human design. Since then, the goalposts have shifted repeatedly in an attempt to keep laboratory escape a viable theory, despite no evidence to support the continued supposition.
Amid a flurry of statements by US health figures suggesting a deeper probe of the Wuhan Institute of Virology is warranted as part of the hunt for the origins of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, China’s state media has shot back, suggesting that the top US biolab at Fort Detrick should also be investigated.
“If they see the ‘lab leak’ theory as one of the directions of the investigation, the Wuhan Institute of Virology should not be the only one included,” the editors of the Global Times, a daily paper published by the Communist Party-owned People’s Daily, wrote on Wednesday.
“Since 2019, the Fort Detrick biolab has shown many signs worthy of attention, and should be included in the first group of targets for investigation. In addition, the US has also built an astonishing number of biolabs in Asia, and investigating them is an urgent project that must be added in the COVID-19 origins-tracing,” the editorial notes.
“If the efforts of virus origins-tracing focus on science rather than politics, expanding the scope of the investigation is completely logical and rational. However, the US is repeatedly using its and its allies' opinion tools to draw attention to Wuhan, especially to the lab there. It is clearly a political maneuver.”
US Biolab Has Leaked Before
Based in northern Maryland, Fort Detrick was once the center of the Pentagon’s bioweapons program and today houses several agencies focused on biodefense and research into some of the world’s deadliest diseases, including smallpox, anthrax, and viral hemorrhagic fevers like ebola.
Fort Detrick has been shut down several times over the years, including in 2009 when the Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases was found to be storing hazardous bacteria, viruses and toxins not included in its inventory, and again in 2019, when the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a “cease and desist” order after finding the lab had inadequate safety measures for waste disposal.
In addition, the FBI’s prime suspect for the 2001 anthrax attacks that followed the September 11 terrorist attacks and killed five people, Bruce Ivins, was a senior biodefense researcher at Fort Detrick. The FBI never charged Ivins before his apparent suicide in 2008, but after his death the bureau released a report on their investigation showing Ivins had stolen the anthrax spores from Fort Detrick.
WHO Report Finds Lab Leak ‘Extremely Unlikely’
In late March, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a report on its international trip to Wuhan to share data on COVID-19 in an attempt to better pinpoint the origins of the coronavirus that has killed nearly 3.5 million people since late 2019. Of the four possible origins the team looked at, a leak from the Wuhan virology lab was judged the least likely, although the scientists did not entirely dismiss it since they couldn’t disprove it. They suggested a zoonotic source was more likely, and also floated a fifth possibility: that it was brought to Wuhan by military athletes in the city for international games the October before the outbreak began.

Hawley, Sanders decry $10B 'bailout' to Jeff Bezos tucked into bill to rebuff China
Sens. Josh Hawley and Bernie Sanders are speaking out against a $10 billion corporate "bailout" to Blue Origin, a space flight company founded by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.
The measure was part of an amendment tacked on to the Endless Frontier Act, a bill aimed at increasing U.S. competitiveness with China through science and technology research. The amendment was authored by the Democratic chairwoman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, Maria Cantwell, who represents Washington state, where Blue Origin is headquartered, and Sen. Roger Wicker, a Republican from Mississippi.
The Senate is voting on amendments to the bill, which costs about $130 billion, and could vote on the final legislation by Thursday. Whether the package sinks or swims without use of "reconciliation," which would require only 50 votes to pass, depends on whether Republicans are satisfied with the amendments that make their way into the bill. GOP members have introduced hundreds of amendments, and not all will get a vote.
The amendment would come after the company lost out on a multibillion-dollar NASA contract to SpaceX, run by Elon Musk. It would provide additional funding for NASA to carry out the Human Landing System program, and direct NASA to have two lander programs, giving Blue Origin another shot. Sanders, D-Vt., introduced an amendment Monday to block Cantwell and Wicker's amendment. "Jeff Bezos is the richest guy on the planet. He's gotten $86 billion richer since the start of the COVID pandemic," the democratic socialist lawmaker wrote on Twitter. "Does he really need $10 billion from Congress for space exploration?" Cantwell said Tuesday afternoon she wasn’t sure if the Sanders amendment would get a vote.
Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., co-sponsored the amendment. "Why would @SenSchumer and Democrats give billionaire Jeff Bezos a multi-billion dollar bailout? Happy to co-sponsor @SenSanders’ amendment," he wrote on Twitter.
Hawley, R-Mo., a frequent Amazon foe, concurred. "Why is the Senate preparing to give @amazon’s Jeff Bezos a $10 billion bailout?" he wrote on Twitter.
The Bezos space company lost a bid with SpaceX for a contract to put U.S. astronauts on the moon for the first time since 1972. NASA said SpaceX had offered the lowest cost by a wide margin. The Cantwell amendment wouldn’t rescind the SpaceX contract but would create another contract that Blue Origin would be favored to win. Blue Origin spent $625,000 lobbying Congress in the first three months of 2021, according to disclosure records.
"I worry very much that what we are seeing now is two of the wealthiest people in this country, Mr. Elon Musk and Mr. Bezos, deciding that they are going to take control over our space industry," Sanders said on the Senate floor.
Sanders is also concerned about a provision that would give $52 billion to major manufacturers of semiconductors such as Intel to combat the global semiconductor shortage. Automobile manufacturers General Motors and Ford cut production at their North American plants last month because of the shortage. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., argued that fewer than 12% of semiconductors are made in the U.S., and that number could decrease without the funding.
