Singapore court freezes US$3.5b assets of Hin Leong’s Lims

Singapore’s High Court approved a request to freeze as much as US$3.5 billion of assets belonging to the founding family of collapsed oil trader Hin Leong Trading (Pte) Ltd, the company’s liquidator told creditors.

Lim Oon Kuin and his family will be asked by lawyers representing liquidator Goh Thien Phong to disclose their assets to the court in the next few days, according to the email seen by Bloomberg News that was sent to creditors on Friday. The Lims may file an appeal against the asset-freeze order, Goh told creditors.

The asset freeze order is a step toward debt recovery for bank creditors including HSBC Holdings Plc and DBS Group Holdings Ltd, which together are owed about US$3.5 billion by Hin Leong. The Lims have sold assets worth millions of dollars in recent months, including a 41% stake in a Singapore commercial storage facility to state-backed operator Jurong Port Pte in March. The Lims have also divested dozens of ships owned by the family’s Xihe Group, according to VesselsValue, which tracks such sales. Independent liquidator Goh wasn’t immediately available for comment outside business hours. Lawyers for the Lim family at Davinder Singh Chambers LLC didn’t reply to an email seeking comments outside office hours.

Hin Leong, once the city-state’s largest independent oil trader, made an application through its then-judicial managers earlier this year to freeze assets, shares and funds held by its founder, known as OK Lim, and his two children. The application was motivated by a risk of asset dissipation as more than 20 banks fought to recover billions of dollars in loans to the fabled trader. The court approved the winding up of the company in March. Lim has been charged with forgery and related offences.

OK Lim’s business empire spanning from oil trading to bunkering to storage businesses collapsed last year after wrong-way bets on oil prices unfurled hidden losses and alleged fraud. The fallout reverberated across global markets, prompting financial institutions to reassess their exposure and shaking out large tracts of the often-opaque US$4 trillion oil-trading industry.

The family’s assets include properties in Singapore and Australia, cash and investments, insurance policies, shares and club memberships, according to a court filing. OK Lim and his children are allowed to remove any of their assets from Singapore, or dispose or reach deals with their possessions so long as the total unencumbered value of their holdings still in Singapore remains no less than US$3.5 billion, according to the filing.

DNS fuckery: what is to come and how to prepare

If you perform the DNS Propagation Test as suggested in the previous post, you will notice that some servers exhibit the problem regularly but others seem to be unaffected. The DNS attacks may not be totally random. There may be a purposeful pattern which targets some more than others. If the frequency of attack on a particular server is very low then you may never spot it. I have seen two instances of a bad IP address from Google but separated by days. OpenDNS gave me two in the same day but that was after weeks of testing. On the other hand, my ISP will feed me a bad IP address several times a day. This is all very circumstantial but I'm not inclined to write a bot to hit the DNS servers in order to gather statistics.

There are thousands of DNS servers spread around the globe, each serving a specific market. If the ultimate target of the attack is YOU then only certain upstream servers feeding the local ISP market would need to be targeted. I don't have any idea what upstream server my ISP uses but I can say that it is not Google or Cloudflare or OpenDNS. Since most people accept whatever default DNS server is assigned by their ISP then the targeting makes sense. Switching away from your default DNS is a good idea but you shouldn't expect that to keep you safe if the black hats decide to put on a full-scale assault. All DNS servers should be considered suspect until proven otherwise.

Here is what we need to be prepared for:

The exploit which is being used to seed bad IP addresses can clearly be used to modify the TTL (Time To Live). Simply extending the TTL to an hour or so could take down the site or at least reduce the traffic considerably. The site operators and Vanwanet would not even know what happened. This would work like a valve. Open the valve to let the traffic through and then close it for any desired period of time. This could be controlled geographically like a wave sweeping across the globe. As it is right now, the TTL is low enough that the fuckery looks like a temporary glitch. In addition, bad IP addresses could be seeded more frequently but, judging from I'm already seeing from my ISP, the frequency is already high enough. Bumping up the TTL could lock me out of 8kun indefinitely if I were to rely on my default DNS server.

Savvy anons know exactly what to do because we've been through this before. For now, you should change your DNS server but this is not a long-term solution if the attack escalates. Think logically: if they REALLY want to take us down then no DNS server is safe. In the event that you do get hit with a bad IP address and the TTL is set to a long period then you should know how to flush your system DNS cache (though this won't help if your DNS server is still holding the bad IP address in its own cache). The ultimate solution is to not rely on the DNS servers at all. Most anons have probably (by now) learned the trick of modifying the "hosts" file. These are the currently valid IP addresses for the site:

I am not providing any instructions on how to implement these solutions because that depends on what operating system you are on. Also, I have zero familiarity with phonefagging and I have no idea what can be done in that context. Do your own research to prepare yourself.

To make matters even more spoopy, Dan Kaminsky died recently. He was an Internet security researcher and he gained prominence for his work on patching a DNS "cache poisoning" vulnerability in 2008. What was he working on recently? Something that somebody did not want to become public?

Protesters shouted slogans in support of Hamas and denounced the Palestinian Mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Mohammed Hussein, for his affiliation with the Palestinian Authority.

In an unprecedented move, Muslim worshipers on Friday expelled Palestinian Mufti of Jerusalem Sheikh Mohammed Hussein from al-Aqsa Mosque and prevented him from completing his sermon.

The protesters shouted slogans in support of Hamas and denounced Hussein for his affiliation with the Palestinian Authority.

Hussein is considered the most senior representative of the PA at al-Aqsa Mosque compound. A resident of east Jerusalem who holds an Israeli-issued ID card, Hussein often appears next to PA President Mahmoud Abbas at public events.

The protesters accused Hussein of “ignoring” Hamas and the Gaza Strip and forced him to stop his sermon.

“We are the men of Mohammed Deif,” hundreds of angry worshipers shouted as bodyguards whisked the mufti away from the mosque.

Deif is the supreme commander of Hamas’s military wing, Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.

Other worshipers shouted: “Go away, go away, we don’t want to see the dogs of the Palestinian Authority.”

The incident came shortly after tens of thousands of Palestinians celebrated at al-Aqsa Mosque compound what they called Hamas’s “victory” against Israel during the last round of fighting.

The Islamic Waqf Department, which is in charge of administering the site, belongs to the Jordanian government. But the PA and other parties, including the Islamic Movement in Israel and Hizb ut-Tahrir (Party of Liberation) also have their representatives at the site.

In the past, senior PA officials who visited al-Aqsa Mosque were also attacked by protesters who accused them of being “traitors” for their alleged readiness to make peace with Israel and for the ongoing security coordination between the Palestinian security forces and the IDF in the West Bank.

How DropIn's CEO Got To Work With Lyft, Hiscox And Beazley

It is certainly not what CEO and founder Louis Ziskin originally intended when he launched DropIn three years ago, an on-demand video streaming platform enabling customers to use a network of smartphones and drones.

“My plan was to become one of the biggest media companies,” says Ziskin.

But over the last two weeks, the business has flown drones over Malibu, California, following the recent wildfires, sending images of devastated households via satellite to Hiscox and to Beazley, two London-based insurance companies.

A couple of months earlier, the business worked with Lyft, the ride-sharing company, to direct drivers to help householders make insurance claims in the U.S states of North and South Carolina following Hurricane Florence.

The initiatives come at a time when DropIn is also in the midst of Lloyd’s Lab, an accelerator run by the 330-year-old insurance market-based in London, where its business model and technology is providing customer insight for traditional insurance companies.

Origin

Ziskin was born and then raised in LA by divorced parents, describing himself as a “problem child”.

“I was a mentally gifted minor who thought rules did not apply to me,” he says.

He moved from school to school, finally going to and then dropping out of the University of Southern California.

He took on several jobs, such as selling condominiums in Florida, always able to generate money. But it was at this time that events in Ziskin’s life were to take a turn that would have a huge impact on his life.

In 1998, Ziskin started importing ecstasy from Europe using mainstream couriers to deliver packages to commercial mailboxes in the Los Angeles area. Federal authorities took Ziskin into custody in 2000, put him on trial and jailed him for 30 years. On appeal in 2003, the sentence was reduced.

The experience has inevitably marked his life.

Outside

When he came out of prison in 2011, then on parole in 2013, he kept his head down and built stacked homes for his brother.

But by 2015, he was ready to start building a business.

“There are drone pilots all over the world. The pilot can upload immediately after the flight. You get all the data and the operator has the license and insurance,” he concluded.

The idea was to develop the DropIn platform as a live stream for drones, operated by an army of amateur operators across the world, to provide video coverage of breaking news stories from war zones or natural disasters.

Ziskin’s record meant that traditional VCs would and could not touch him. But family and friends were ready to forgive the past and step in. One of the investors, for example, is John Donfield whose father, Jeff, worked with President Nixon on the war on drugs.

Ziskin ended up raising U.S. $5.5 million from these angel investors.

Pivot

By May 2015, Ziskin had set up shop in Venice, Los Angeles.

The business launched and grew rapidly with over 1100 drone pilots worldwide with 50% of them veterans.

But the problem came as Ziskin’s vision for people to be able to enjoy live-streaming through an app encountered the potential cost of such a technology.

“The aha moment was when we did not have the $20 million to get it on an app on all phones,” says Ziskin.

The insurance market in the U.S. is huge - U.S. $60 billion a year adjusting claims. A significant business can be built by disrupting only a small percentage of it.

But fewer than half of insurance companies use technology to address issues around fraud, determine the level of premiums or for underwriting, according to the most recent FRISS Digital Transformation in Insurance Survey.

The pivot, when it came, was to relaunch DropIn as a remote on-demand inspection platform for insurance companies to inspect damage in real time by insurance claimants.

Ziskin's original ideal of marshalling amateur drone operators – or droperators - would continue but these would now be directed by insurance companies to help their customers make their claims.

“I didn’t need market analysis. I just needed to know no one else is doing it,” says Ziskin.

Reel life

When a customer calls about an insurance claim, they are in the middle of the crisis. They want to make a claim but they also want help to stop the leak or to get the power back on.

Many of the claimants are also of a demographic which finds using an app on a phone beyond them.

Once the droperator arrives at the incident, he or she then starts live streaming using a drone or their mobile phone. Meanwhile, the insurance adjuster back in an office views the video in real time and can ask for specific GPS-tagged photos and measurements.

The droperator can even make suggestions for approved, third-party plumbers or electricians.

It takes only a small tweak to the customer service process, whereby the call centre recommends the use of DropIn to report the claim.

“Dropin requires a process change for the insurance companies but the easiest one possible because it is a change in the call centre,” says Ziskin.

“The [insurance company] CFOs love the cheaper pay-outs. It’s an opportunity to improve the bottom line and improve things, but not at a negative cost to others.”

It is also the ability to generate customer insight for traditional insurance companies - at what is a pretty emotive moment for their customers - that has been noticed.

The partnership with Lyft comes at a time when the ride-sharing company explores roles for its drivers in a future of driverless cars.

“Lyft was concerned for their drivers’ futures, looking at stuff they might do,” says Ziskin.

The first step was a pilot with 43 drivers in Miami, who, following a webinar, were sent out on the road and then into full operation with 100 drivers in the Carolinas.

And when Lloyd’s of London asked its underwriter members to vote on which of 20 startups should join its initial accelerator programme, DropIn won a slot.

Almost 90% of insurance companies are “convinced that insurtech offers great opportunities” and just under 20% are already investing in it, once more according to the FRISS Digital Transformation in Insurance Survey.

Two of Lloyd’s members, and also traditional insurance companies, Hiscox and Beazley, have already worked with DropIn on live streaming from the wildfires in Malibu.

Let’s have a look at this undeniably strange and disturbing affair. April 2, 1949 was the date on which Forrestal was taken to the hospital – for his own good and for that of the U.S. government, too. It was apparent to the doctors and nurses that Forrestal was in a dangerous state. Forrestal suspected – in fact, he was absolutely sure – that dangerous characters were watching his every move.

Who those same characters might have been all very much depended on Forrestal’s frame: sometimes it was Russian agents. On other occasions it was spies in the U.S. government. As for the latter, Forrestal thought it was J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI. Forrestal’s mind was spinning – and far from in a good way. On top of that, Forrestal stopped eating for a while. Not a good sign. After a few weeks in the hospital, there was a clear, welcome, improvement for Forrestal. Both the doctors and the nurses concurred. On top of that, his appetite started to return. To the point where – in the presence of Rear Admiral Morton Willcutts, who had come to see his old friend – Forrestal chowed down on a huge steak. It really did appear that good times were ahead. That all changed, however, only two days later. Or, rather, two nights later. Death was just around the corner. It was a death shrouded in mystery. Let’s see what we know for sure about those final hours for someone who held some of the U.S. government’s most important secrets. The man assigned to keep a careful watch on Forrestal was Edward Prise. He was a U.S. Navy corpsman. Such was the length of their time spent together, the pair became good friends. From that point onward, everything very much becomes murky, unclear – and probably something that will never be fully resolved to the satisfaction of everyone. When Harrison, Jr. got back to the room he was shocked to the core to see that Forrestal was not in his bed. And, the room’s windows were open. Harrison’s Jr raced to the window: the cord of Forrestal’s dressing-gown was tied to the radiator near the window. Clearly, the goal was death by strangulation. It turned out, however, that Forrestal’s weight caused the cord to snap and Forrestal fell ten floors to his death; something that absolutely no one could have had a chance of surviving. The official theory is that Forrestal – left all alone in his room – took his own life, possibly in a brief moment when his mind swung back to that dangerous state of depression and anxiety. The big question, however, is: could Forrestal have been pushed? The reason: to make sure he could never, ever reveal what he may have been exposed to in government.

FDA: 'Vaccine hesitant' can't use antibody test to prove immunity!

Many Americans who have chosen not to get one of the experimental COVID-19 vaccines because of the risks have hoped that testing positive for antibodies could substitute for being vaccinated, providing a virtual "vaccine passport."

But the Food and Drug Administration issued guidance this week stating a vaccine is still needed to confirm immunity from the COVID-19 virus.

The FDA acknowledged that antibody tests "can play an important role in identifying individuals who may have been exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus and may have developed an adaptive immune response."

"However, antibody tests should not be used at this time to determine immunity or protection against COVID-19 at any time, and especially after a person has received a COVID-19 vaccination."

The FDA said that antibodies provided by the vaccines are superior to the antibodies developed from being infected by the virus, providing needed protection that the regular antibodies do not.

But that's contradicted by empirical study data, Yale University epidemiologist Dr. Harvey Risch told WND.

He pointed to a massive study in Israel finding that people who had tested positive for the novel coronavirus in the previous three or more months had at least as much protection against new infection, hospitalization and death as vaccinated people.

"People become immune by surviving infection," argued Risch, professor of epidemiology in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Yale School of Public Health and Yale School of Medicine.

In an email to WND, he explained that serum antibodies and T-cell antibodies – the white blood cells that attack infections – demonstrate past history of infection.

Risch said the FDA is correct that antibodies from infection are not the same as post-vaccination antibodies.

But this is irrelevant, he contended.

"These natural antibodies are proof of past infection," said Risch. "Past infection is extremely strong evidence of immunity."
