A note on these numbers

While Mandarin immersion programs (MIPs) in the United States have experienced rapid growth since the first one was founded in1981, there exists no official list of Mandarin immersion programs nationwide. I include here only schools that fit the definition of immersion set forth by the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis: Instruction takes place in the target language (i.e. Mandarin) for at least 50% of the school day during the elementary school years. In middle school, there should be at least one subject matter course taught in Mandarin. In high school, there should be at least some type of continuation course that offers Mandarin at the appropriate level for students who have been immersed in the language for ten years.

When a program appears to be in flux, I try to give it the benefit of the doubt and keep it on the list even if it’s not clear that true immersion is being offered. However some schools have shifted to a FLES (Foreign Language in Elementary School) model rather than teaching subject in Mandarin, and those I remove from the list when that change occurs.

The prince vehemently denies it.

Court papers reveal Maxwell’s team is seeking original copies of photos including the 2001 Andrew snap.

Andrew has hinted the photo is fake.

Sources say pressure is mounting on him to talk to the FBI about his friendship with Epstein, which he vowed in his BBC Newsnight interview in 2019.

Mrs Giuffre said the picture is “authentic” and she gave the original to the FBI.

Maxwell faces eight charges after the fourth alleged victim was added.

A spokesman for the duke has been contacted for comment.

Future shipments of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine have been halted while the Food and Drug Administration investigates after human error at a manufacturing plant ruined 15 million doses, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

The plant in Baltimore is run by Emergent Biosolutions, and workers mixed up the ingredients in the vaccine, the Times reported.

The error does not affect doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine that have already been distributed, as they were made in the Netherlands, but it impacts future shipments of the vaccine, according to the Times.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is one of three being used in the United States.

The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were already the bulk of the U.S. supply, and those are proceeding as planned. But the error could limit the ability of Johnson & Johnson to add considerably to the U.S. supply in the coming weeks.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is the only one of the three that requires just one shot to be effective. The others require two shots spaced apart.

In response to the Times report, Johnson & Johnson acknowledged in a statement that the "quality control process identified one batch of drug substance that did not meet quality standards at Emergent Biosolutions," noting that the doses never advanced to the packaging stage.

"The issue was identified and addressed with Emergent and shared with the United States Food & Drug Administration [FDA]," the company added.

The company said it is sending additional experts to the facility to oversee manufacturing.

Fifteen million doses of Johnson & Johnson (J&J’s) vaccine failed quality control after workers at a Baltimore manufacturing plant negligently combined ingredients from AstraZeneca and J&J’s COVID vaccine.

The mix-up forced regulators to delay authorization of the plant’s production lines and prompted an investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Sweden rejects Gates' solar geoengineering test

LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Under pressure from indigenous people and environmental groups, Sweden’s space agency on Wednesday called off a landmark first test of technology that aims to slow global warming by dimming sunlight reaching Earth.

The Swedish Space Corporation said it had decided not to conduct the technical test, which uses a high-altitude balloon, that was planned for June near the Arctic circle town of Kiruna by Harvard University researchers.

The SCoPEx project test would have involved releasing a tiny amount of reflective material 20 km (12 miles) into the atmosphere, to help researchers better understand how such “solar geoengineering” might help cool the planet.

Such technology mimics the cooling effect of volcanic eruptions and could reduce global temperatures - though its potential risks are unclear and it would not address other climate-change-related threats, such as ocean acidification.

But leaders of Sweden’s indigenous Saami reindeer herders wrote to the space agency opposing the test.

Åsa Larsson Blind, vice president of the Saami Council, said in a statement that such technological fixes were “completely against what we need to do now - transform to zero-carbon societies in harmony with nature”....Johanna Sandahl, president of the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, the country’s largest environmental group, called Wednesday’s decision to halt the planned test “a relief”.

“It’s a rejection of a technology with the potential for extreme consequences that could alter hydrological cycles, disrupt monsoon patterns and increase drought,” she said, terming the techniques “too dangerous to ever be used”.

New York Will Officially Begin Requiring ‘Vaccine Passports’ On April 2

New Yorkers will be required to show “vaccine passports” — proof that they have received the COVID-19 vaccine — in order to re-enter society.

The New York Post reported that the “Excelsior Pass” would officially launch on April 2, following an announcement from Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) on Friday.

“Similar to a mobile airline boarding pass, individuals will be able to either print out their pass or store it on their smartphones using the Excelsior Pass Wallet app,” said a press release about the program. “Each Pass will have a secure QR code, which participating businesses and venues can scan using a companion app to verify proof of COVID-19 negative test results or proof of vaccination. An individual’s data is kept secure and confidential at all times.”
