Biden looks to visit Japan in May for Quad summit

U.S. President Joe Biden is looking to visit Japan in May for a summit with their fellow leaders of the Quad nations, Nikkei has learned.

The suggested date follows up on the agreement between Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during the pair's first virtual summit last month. Biden accepted Kishida's invitation to visit Tokyo in the first half of the year for a meeting with other leaders from the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, a framework among Japan, the U.S., Australia and India.

Biden also wants to visit South Korea around that time since a new president is slated to take office in May after a presidential election. Having the visits to Japan and South Korea occur close to each other would be optimal for the American side.

Japan, the U.S. and South Korea are preparing a trilateral meeting of their top diplomats Feb. 12 in Hawaii. Japan and the U.S. are bolstering relations with allies and friendly nations in the Indo-Pacific region to form a united front against China and North Korea.

Tokyo is finalizing the date for the Quad meeting with an eye on Australia's general election. Canberra is expected to call an election by late May, but the date has not been set. Foreign ministers from the four Quad nations meet in Australia on Feb. 11 to exchange and coordinate their views.

Alphabet Seeks More Investors in 20-for-1 Stock Split

Alphabet Inc. announced a 20-for-1 stock split in the form of a one-time special stock dividend, aiming to draw a wider audience for its shares.

“The reason for the split is it makes our shares more accessible,” Ruth Porat, Alphabet’s chief financial officer, said in a conference call with television anchors. “We thought it made sense to do.” The new class of retail investors often weigh affordability and brand recognition when deciding which stocks to buy. Alphabet has been at a disadvantage, as its stock is expensive and uses the name of a holding company, rather than the globally recognized brand, Google.

The stock split could lead to Alphabet’s listing on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, one of the most commonly quoted indexes that holds 30 blue-chip companies. It could also help the company on its path to cross a $2 trillion market cap. As part of the stock split, Google’s parent will give $0.001 for each share of the company’s Class A stock, Class B stock and Class C stock, according to an 8K filing Tuesday. Porat said to expect the split at the close of business July 15.

A prior stock split happened in 2014, after the company’s shares topped $1,000. Alphabet shares extended gains to 7% at 4:24 p.m. New York time after the stock split was announced.

Hungary’s Orban says NATO and Russia can reach a deal, sanctions don’t work

Differences between Russia and NATO on the Ukraine crisis are significant but “can be bridged,” Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Tuesday after nearly five hours of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Hungary, which was the first in the EU to buy and use Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine against COVID-19 without approval for it by the European Medicines Agency, was also willing to buy the single-shot Sputnik Light version, and permissioning of the jab was in the final phases, Orban said.

Pfizer seeks US approval of Covid vaccine for children under 5

Pfizer and BioNTech said Tuesday they are seeking emergency authorization from US health regulators for use of their Covid vaccine for children aged over six months and under five years.

If the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorizes the two-shot regimen, it will become the first Covid vaccine available to this age group in the United States.

The companies said Tuesday that they started submitting their formal application "following a request" from the FDA, which seemingly wants to get the process moving quickly.

In a tweet soon after the announcement, the FDA said it will hold a meeting in two weeks, on February 15, to consider the request.

"Having a safe and effective vaccine available for children in this age group is a priority for the agency," said interim FDA head Janet Woodcock, who added that the FDA asked for the application "in light of the recent Omicron surge."

The companies are seeking authorization for only two doses of their vaccine, but believe a third will be needed "to achieve high levels of protection against current and potential future variants," Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said in a statement.

"If two doses are authorized, parents will have the opportunity to begin a Covid-19 vaccination series for their children while awaiting potential authorization of a third dose," he added.

To limit side effects for this young age group, Pfizer chose to significantly decrease the dosage of its vaccine, opting for only three micrograms per jab versus 30 for those over 12 years old, and 10 for ages five to 11.

The company's researchers concluded last fall that low doses of the vaccine provided protection in children up to two years old but not in those aged two to five, and announced in December they would add a third dose to their trials.

Data on the three-dose regimen is "expected in the coming months and will be submitted to the FDA to support a potential expansion" of this initial request, Pfizer and BioNTech said in the statement.

If the FDA authorizes the emergency use of the vaccine, an advisory committee for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will then meet to decide to recommend its use or not.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was approved three months ago for emergency use in children from five to 11, but uptake has been relatively slow.

In that age group, only 30 percent have received at least one dose and around 22 percent are fully vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Young children are less susceptible to falling seriously ill with Covid-19, but some nonetheless end up hospitalized by the virus.

New pediatric Covid hospitalizations hit a record high in the United States in December as the Omicron strain spread rapidly.

Some cases of the life-threatening illness MIS-C (multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children), have also been reported in young children with Covid.

CDC data shows that about 400 children aged four and under have died from Covid-19 in the United States since the pandemic began

The suspicion that the spike protein formed in the body as a result of the "vaccination" against Covid-19 could be responsible for the pathologically observed inflammations and lesions of vessels has now been confirmed immunohistologically for the first time.

The pathologists Prof. Dr. Arne Burkhardt and Prof. Dr. Walter Lang and their team have succeeded in reliably detecting the vaccine spike protein in the vessels of a person who died 4 months after "vaccination" and who had vascular lesions and also vaccine-induced myocarditis. Detection was successful using an antibody specific for the spike protein by conventional immunohistochemistry on the tissue sections.

The described detection method can be applied to all organ and cell damage in which conspicuous pathological findings are found after "vaccination" against Covid-19. From this follows: For ethical, legal and scientific reasons, all histopathological examinations in connection with damage due to "vaccination" against Covid-19 must be accompanied with this method with immediate effect.
