Hungary passes constitutional amendment to ban LGBTQ+ public events

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Hungary’s parliament on Monday passed an amendment to the constitution that allows the government to ban public events by LGBTQ+ communities, a decision that legal scholars and critics call another step toward authoritarianism by the populist government.

The amendment, which required a two-thirds vote, passed along party lines with 140 votes for and 21 against. It was proposed by the ruling Fidesz-KDNP coalition led by populist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Ahead of the vote — the final step for the amendment — opposition politicians and other protesters attempted to blockade the entrance to a parliament parking garage. Police physically removed demonstrators, who had used zip ties to bind themselves together.

The amendment declares that children’s rights to moral, physical and spiritual development supersede any right other than the right to life, including that to peacefully assemble. Hungary’s contentious “child protection” legislation prohibits the “depiction or promotion” of homosexuality to minors aged under 18.

The amendment codifies a law fast-tracked through parliament in March that bans public events held by LGBTQ+ communities, including the popular Pride event in Budapest that draws thousands annually.

That law also allows authorities to use facial recognition tools to identify people who attend prohibited events — such as Budapest Pride — and can come with fines of up to 200,000 Hungarian forints ($546).

Dávid Bedő, a lawmaker with the opposition Momentum party who participated in the attempted blockade, said before the vote that Orbán and Fidesz for the past 15 years “have been dismantling democracy and the rule of law, and in the past two or three months, we see that this process has been sped up.”

He said as elections approach in 2026 and Orbán’s party lags in the polls behind a popular new challenger from the opposition, “they will do everything in their power to stay in power.”

Opposition lawmakers used air horns to disrupt the vote, which continued after a few moments.

Hungary’s government has campaigned against LGBTQ+ communities in recent years, and argues its “child protection” policies, which forbid the availability to minors of any material that mentions homosexuality, are needed to protect children from what it calls “woke ideology” and “gender madness.”

Critics say the measures do little to protect children and are being used to distract from more serious problems facing the country and mobilize Orbán’s right-wing base ahead of elections.

“This whole endeavor which we see launched by the government, it has nothing to do with children’s rights,” said Dánel Döbrentey, a lawyer with the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union, calling it “pure propaganda.”

Constitution recognizes two sexes

The new amendment also states that the constitution recognizes two sexes, male and female, an expansion of an earlier amendment that prohibits same-sex adoption by stating that a mother is a woman and a father is a man.

The declaration provides a constitutional basis for denying the gender identities of transgender people, as well as ignoring the existence of intersex individuals who are born with sexual characteristics that do not align with binary conceptions of male and female.

In a statement on Monday, government spokesperson Zoltán Kovács wrote that the change is “not an attack on individual self-expression, but a clarification that legal norms are based on biological reality.”

Döbrentey, the lawyer, said it was “a clear message” for transgender and intersex people: “It is definitely and purely and strictly about humiliating people and excluding them, not just from the national community, but even from the community of human beings.”

The amendment is the 15th to Hungary’s constitution since Orbán’s party unilaterally authored and approved it in 2011.

Facial recognition to identify demonstrators

Ádám Remport, a lawyer with the HCLU, said that while Hungary has used facial recognition tools since 2015 to assist police in criminal investigations and finding missing persons, the recent law banning Pride allows the technology to be used in a much broader and problematic manner. That includes for monitoring and deterring political protests.

“One of the most fundamental problems is its invasiveness, just the sheer scale of the intrusion that happens when you apply mass surveillance to a crowd,” Remport said.

“More salient in this case is the effect on the freedom of assembly, specifically the chilling effect that arises when people are scared to go out and show their political or ideological beliefs for fear of being persecuted,” he added.

Suspension of citizenship

The amendment passed Monday also allows for Hungarians who hold dual citizenship in a non-European Economic Area country to have their citizenship suspended for up to 10 years if they are deemed to pose a threat to public order, public security or national security.

Hungary has taken steps in recent months to protect its national sovereignty from what it claims are foreign efforts to influence its politics or even topple Orbán’s government.

The self-described “illiberal” leader has accelerated his longstanding efforts to crack down on critics such as media outlets and groups devoted to civil rights and anti-corruption, which he says have undermined Hungary’s sovereignty by receiving financial assistance from international donors.

In a speech laden with conspiracy theories in March, Orbán compared people who work for such groups to insects, and pledged to “eliminate the entire shadow army” of foreign-funded “politicians, judges, journalists, pseudo-NGOs and political activists.”

Pennsylvania suspect torched Governor Shapiro's home, planned to beat him with a hammer

Cody A. Balmer has been accused of a slew of crimes, including terrorism, prosecutors said Monday.

The man charged in the arson attack at the historic Pennsylvania Governor's Residence said he had hatred toward Gov. Josh Shapiro and would have attacked him had they come face-to-face, authorities said Monday.

Cody A. Balmer, 38, is unemployed, has a few nonviolent criminal convictions, was charged with assault in 2023 and, on social media, has displayed simmering antigovernment statements and memes.

He has been charged with attempted criminal homicide, aggravated arson, burglary, terrorism and other counts in connection with the attack early Sunday, the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

In court Monday for preliminary arraignment, county Judge Dale Klein asked Balmer, of Penbrook, Pennsylvania, whether he took any medication for mental illness. Balmer, who said he was not mentally ill, told the judge that he did not, adding that it “led me to different types of behavior" in the past.

Balmer also told Klein that he lived with his parents, that he was unemployed and that his last job was as a welder at a truck body manufacturer.

Balmer said he's single, but when Klein asked whether he has children, he responded, "A lot of them."

He said he had previously been arrested and "missed a few" court dates. Klein read the charges, heard the defense's request for bail and ultimately ruled there would be no bail — Balmer is to stay locked up, with the next court date, most likely a formal arraignment, not yet scheduled.

In denying bail, Klein said Balmer could be a danger to the community and himself.

Authorities alleged that he climbed the fence of the Governor's Residence in Harrisburg, used a hammer to break a window and threw Molotov cocktails inside to start the destructive blaze early Sunday.

The arson attack lasted for several minutes. Shapiro and first lady Lori Shapiro, as well as other guests and staff members, were inside the residence when the fire erupted around 2 a.m. No one was injured, and Shapiro's family was safely evacuated. However, prosecutors said the residence sustained "substantial damage."

The 29,000-square-foot mansion on the Susquehanna River was completed in 1968 and has been the address for eight governors, according to the state. It was designed by architect George Ewing.

Balmer turned himself in to the Pennsylvania State Police on Sunday and admitted to "harboring hatred toward Governor Shapiro," authorities alleged.

Asked during a police interview what he would have done had Shapiro found him inside the residence, "he advised he would have beaten him with his hammer," the probable cause affidavit says.

Balmer was caught on security cameras both inside and outside the residence, officials said. He was seen wearing a black tools jacket and black boots and carrying a bag.

Security video showed the intruder climbing over an exterior fence, approaching the piano room windows on the south side of the home and breaking an exterior window with a hammer, the criminal affidavit said. He then threw a Molotov cocktail inside. Shortly afterward, flames were seen in the interior of the home, the probable cause affidavit says.

The intruder then moved to an adjacent window, broke the glass and entered the home through the window, the affidavit says. Inside, he deployed a second incendiary device in the dining room, which spurred another fire.

The affidavit says Balmer then moved toward the dining room exit. Video showed him wearing two gloves of different colors — one orange and one yellow. The intruder was seen kicking the dining room door open and exiting the residence. He left the property in the same direction he entered, climbing back over the perimeter fence, running through a parking lot and fleeing the residence in a southeast direction, the affidavit says.

Investigators found two broken glass beer bottles containing gasoline in the dining room.

Shapiro, who is Jewish, had shared Passover well-wishes online Saturday evening just hours before the attack.

He condemned the attack, saying: "This kind of violence is not OK. ... I don’t give a damn if it’s coming from one particular side or the other, directed at one particular party or another, or one particular person or another. It is not OK, and it has to stop."

State police in Harrisburg were contacted by a woman who said she was an ex of Balmer, authorities said. She said Balmer confessed to the act and "wanted her to call police to turn him in," the affidavit says.

A short time later, Balmer approached a state police trooper at the department headquarters, authorities said. He said he was "responsible" for the fire and "wished to turn himself in," they said. He was transported to the state police office in Harrisburg, where he was interviewed and confessed his ill feelings toward Shapiro, the affidavit says.

He told investigators that he removed gasoline from a lawn mower and poured it into beer bottles he found at his home, then walked for an hour to the Governor’s Residence with the intention of throwing the homemade Molotov cocktails into the home, authorities said.

Balmer lives in Penbrook, a borough adjacent to Harrisburg, in a home about 3.5 miles from the Governor's Residence.

Balmer also told investigators he was aware his actions would result in "negative consequences" and knew it was possible that Shapiro and others were home and could have been harmed, according to the affidavit.

Balmer also worked as a mechanic. Kindermans Auto Repair, a shop in Harrisburg, wrote Sunday on Facebook that he is a former employee who hasn't worked there in more than two years.

It said Sunday on Facebook, "While we are saddened to learn of these current charges, we fully support our men and women in law enforcement."

Balmer’s social media presence suggests he held staunch anti-government views. He often posted memes urging people to "become ungovernable" and reposted an artwork of a Molotov cocktail in 2022 with the slogan "Be the light you want to see in the world."

He posted negative content about President Joe Biden and seemed to reject Biden’s 2020 presidential win. He shared posts on Facebook criticizing Biden during his term, including a picture with the text "Joe Biden owes me 2 grand" and a post that said, "Biden supporters shouldn’t exist."

He also shared a meme in 2020 that argued that both Democrats and Republicans "would rather argue with other than work to solve the problems we are facing." It's not clear what his political affiliation is.

A Penbrook resident, who wanted to be identified only as Tim, said he has seen Balmer in the neighborhood since Balmer and his parents moved nearby a few months ago.

"I never, never talked to the guy," he said. "Never said hi to him. Seemed like a bit of a creep, so I just never took the initiative. I guess he just put off those vibes."

Balmer has faced criminal charges before.

He pleaded guilty to forgery and theft in 2015 and again to forgery in 2016 in Pennsylvania, court records show. In 2015, Harrisburg police officers alleged he altered a paycheck to someone else to make it appear to have been made out to him for an increased amount, more than $2,700, according to the affidavit filed as part of the criminal complaint in the case.

He was also charged with assault in 2023 in a case that is still open.

President Donald Trump briefly spoke about the attack from the White House on Monday, where he said the suspect was "probably just a wack job."

"The attacker was not a fan of Trump. I understand, just from what I read and from what I’ve been told, the attacker basically wasn’t a fan of anybody," Trump said. "Certainly a thing like that cannot be allowed to happen."

Biden said Monday on X: "Jill and I are disgusted by the attack on the Shapiro family and their home during the first night of Passover. We are relieved that they are safe and grateful to the first responders. There is no place for this type of evil in America, and as I told the Governor yesterday, we must stand united against hatred and violence."

Nvidia

, the chipmaker that powers much of today’s artificial intelligence boom, on Monday announced a push to produce NVIDIA AI supercomputers entirely in the U.S. for the first time.

The company said it plans to produce up to $500 billion of AI infrastructure in the U.S. via its manufacturing partnerships over the next four years.

“Adding American manufacturing helps us better meet the incredible and growing demand for AI chips and supercomputers, strengthens our supply chain and boosts our resiliency,” CEO Jensen Huang said.

The news comes after President Donald Trump, in a push to take on trade deficits and pressure companies to on-shore more manufacturing to the U.S., imposed high “reciprocal” tariffs on a long list of countries. Trump placed a 32% tariff on products from Taiwan, where Nvidia largely manufactures its graphics processing units, or GPUs, and 145% tariffs on products from China, a move that threatened to take a toll on tech giants like Apple, which makes iPhones and most of its other products in China.

But things changed quickly: On Friday evening, Trump exempted chips, as well as smartphones, computers, and other tech devices and components, from the tariffs. On Sunday, he reportedly said he would announce tariffs on imported semiconductors within the week.

Nvidia wrote in a blog post that it has commissioned more than 1 million square feet of manufacturing space. Its Blackwell AI chips have started production in Phoenix at Taiwan Semiconductor

plants. In Arizona, Nvidia will also partner with Amkor and Siliconware Precision Industries, which provide chip packaging and testing services.

The company designs its GPUs, but outsources its chip production to contract manufacturers like TSMC.

Nvidia is also building manufacturing plants for its supercomputers in Texas, partnering with Foxconn in Houston and with Wistron in Dallas, the company wrote. It expects to reach mass production at both facilities within 12 to 15 months.

To help design and operate the manufacturing plants, Nvidia will use its own technology to create “digital twins” of the factories and build robots for specialized automation.

The White House put out a blog post on Monday calling Nvidia’s announcement the “Trump effect in action.” When asked if there was a relationship between the announcement and Trump’s tariffs, Nvidia declined to comment.

Intel to sell majority stake in Altera for $4.46 billion to fund revival effort

Intel has agreed to sell a 51% stake in its Altera programmable chip business to buyout firm Silver Lake for $4.46 billion, in the first major move under new CEO Lip-Bu Tan to revive the struggling American chipmaker.

The deal, announced on Monday, values Altera at $8.75 billion, a sharp decline from the $17 billion Intel paid in 2015.

The sale will provide Intel a cash boost as the chipmaker aggressively cuts costs to bolster its balance sheet, while it invests in a capital-intensive undertaking to become a contract manufacturer.

Shares of Intel were up 3.9% in premarket trading.

Since last year, Intel has taken steps to spin Altera out as a separate unit and said it planned to sell a portion of its stake.

“Today’s announcement reflects our commitment to sharpening our focus, lowering our expense structure and strengthening our balance sheet,” CEO Tan, who took the helm after former top boss Pat Gelsinger’s ouster, said.

Altera makes programmable chips that can be used for various purposes from telecom equipment to military.

Reuters had first reported in November that Silver Lake was among potential suitors competing for a minority stake in Altera.

The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2025, after which Intel expects to deconsolidate Altera’s financial results from Intel’s financial statements, the company said.

In 2024, Altera generated revenue of $1.54 billion and posted an operating loss of $615 million.

Raghib Hussain, who was an executive at custom AI chipmaker Marvell Technology MRVL.O, will succeed Sandra Rivera as Altera CEO from May 5, Intel said.

Polling shows growing number of Republicans identify with the MAGA movement

As President Donald Trump nears the 100-day mark of his second term, recent polling from NBC News shows how he has consolidated the Republican Party not just around himself, but also around his broader “Make America Great Again” movement.

Thirty-six percent of registered voters identified themselves as MAGA supporters in the March NBC News poll. It’s a significant increase from past NBC News polling — up from 23% of respondents in a merged sample of all of NBC News’ polling across 2023 and 27% of respondents in a merged sample of NBC News’ 2024 polling.

The overall share is powered by the 71% of Republicans who now call themselves MAGA supporters.

NBC News’ polling already showed signs of a shift afoot between the beginning of the 2024 presidential primaries and the final weeks before Election Day, as the GOP consolidated around Trump. In January 2024, days after Trump won nominating contests in Iowa and New Hampshire, just 20% of registered voters said they aligned with the MAGA movement. But in NBC News’ combined polling in October and early November, that number had ticked up to 29%.

A shift among Republicans moving more into Trump’s camp is primarily driving this movement, with a 16-point increase in GOPers identifying with the MAGA movement between the two polls right before the 2024 election (55%) and March (71%). There’s also been a similar shift among college-educated men, from 21% in 2024 to 37% in March — also a 16-point increase.

It’s the kind of pro-Trump consolidation that led to him matching his best-ever approval rating (47%) in NBC News' March poll, though a majority of registered voters, 51%, still disapproved of his job performance.

“All of that shift is coming from Republicans,” said Bill McInturff, a Republican pollster with Public Opinion Strategies who conducted the survey along with Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates.

“Look at this transformed party, where in 14 months we’ve gone from 40% of Republicans from saying they identify as MAGA to 71%,” McInturff continued.

Athens is burning after petrol bomb riots see attacks on police - before 70 are arrested

Athens has been ravaged by flames after rioters threw petrol bombs during a clash with police officers before 70 demonstrators were arrested.

Shocking footage emerging from the holiday hotspot showed rioters storming the streets just after midnight as the rowdy mobs came head-to-head with cops.

Around 50 people launched petrol bombs and fireworks at police officers outside a station in Exarchia and some 21 cars were left wrecked after being torched in the chaos.

Properties, local shops, and motorbikes were also set alight by protestors as terrified locals watched on in horror.

Over 70 arrests were made during the riot which lasted several hours, Greek broadcaster EPTNews reported Sunday, citing security sources.

'Incidents occurred on Saturday night in Exarchia where unknown persons attacked police forces,' Greek authorities said.

'According to ELAS, the incidents began shortly before midnight when groups of unknown persons attacked police forces at the intersection of Kallidromiou and E. Benaki streets with Molotov cocktails and stones, with the police responding by using chemical weapons.'

The riots erupted after a bomb planted near the offices of Hellenic Train - Greece's main railway company - exploded on Friday night in central Athens.

Anonymous calls warning of the attack were made to Greek media just moments before the blast. An unknown man is said to have warned that the bomb, placed inside a backpack, would explode in '30 to 40 minutes' and said that 'it is not a prank', The Sun reported at the time.

In a statement, Hellenic Train said the explosion had occurred 'very close to its central offices' and said the blast had caused limited damage and no injuries to any employees or passers-by.

Police cordoned off the site along a major avenue in the Greek capital, keeping residents and tourists away from the building in an area with several bars and restaurants.

Officers at the scene said a bag containing an explosive device had been placed near the Hellenic Train building on Syngrou Avenue.

The drama unfolded amid widespread public anger over a February 2023 railway disaster which saw 57 people killed, most of them young students, and dozens more seriously injured when a freight train and a passenger train heading in opposite directions were accidentally put on the same track.

Thousands have now turned out to strike and protest in Greece and abroad since the second anniversary of the collision.

It also brought about two votes of no confidence last year and again in March that the conservative government overcame.

The train's Italian-owned operator Hellenic Train has denied knowledge of any illegal cargo on the freight train.

More than 40 people have been prosecuted, including the local station master responsible for routing the trains.

A trial into the accident is not expected before the end of the year.

Earlier on Friday, the parliament voted to refer a former junior minister to justice on possible misdemeanour charges for breach of duty in connection to the aftermath of the accident.

Opposition parties say Christos Triantopoulos, who was dispatched by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to the scene after the accident, authorised the bulldozing of the crash site which led to the loss of vital evidence.

Triantopoulos denies any wrongdoing and says he was overseeing relief efforts.

Greece's intercity trains went under private management in 2017, when state-owned Greek rail traffic services operator TrainOSE was privatised and sold to Italy's Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, becoming Hellenic Train.

Greek state company OSE still owns the tracks.

Hellenic Train's former CEO Maurizio Capotorto was reportedly summoned to testify before a magistrate, on suspicion of giving false testimony to a parliamentary committee into the disaster in January 2024.

Fox News has highest ratings in cable news history in Q1

Here is TVNewser’s recap of the cable news ratings for the first quarter of 2025.

It has been an start to the new year on multiple fronts. Former President Joe Biden handed the Oval Office back to President Donald Trump in January. Since then, the new administration and Elon Musk’s DOGE group have been regularly making headlines as they’ve sought to reshape the scope of the federal government.

Also in January, massive wildfires swept through the Los Angeles area, wrecking communities and claiming lives. Two airplane tragedies in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia put the aviation industry in the spotlight. And then in March, the Trump administration experienced its first major political scandal when defense secretary Pete Hegseth was involved in leaking war plans to the editor in chief of The Atlantic.

Fox News remained the top cable news network, and enjoyed its highest-rated quarter in cable news history. In addition to topping its cable rivals, FNC also surpassed ABC and NBC during weekday primetime.

Fox News also secured its highest quarter cable news share ever with 65% of the audience in total day and 66% in primetime. It was the only one of the three cable outlets to see its performance improve versus the same quarter in 2024 across the board.

There were also programming changes made during this quarter amongst all the outlets. Fox News introduced The Will Cain Show at 4 p.m. ET and rejigged its weekend primetime lineup. MSNBC revamped most of its its weekday and weekend lineup, which led to the depature of Joy Reid at 7 p.m. ET. Finally CNN reworked its weekday lineup resulting in a new 4 p.m. show from Kasie Hunt, as well as Jake Tapper bordering primetime and Wolf Blitzer moving to the midmorning timeslot of 10 a.m. ET.

Florida woman accused of selling human bones on Facebook - with some as low as $35

A Florida woman is accused of selling and buying human bones - including some for as low as $35 - and now a criminal charge.

Kymberlee Schopper, 52, was charged with trading in human tissue, according to Fox 35.

Police in Orange City, Florida, say Schopper bought and offered human bones for sale on Facebook marketplace. Authorities received a report on December 21, 2023, about a business selling remains through its social media account.

The business was identified as “Wicked Wonderland” and is located in Orange City.

Investigators say they found human remains for sale on the site, including two segments of a skull for $90, a clavicle and scapula for $90, a rib for $35, a vertebrae for $35 and a partial human skull for $600, according to the report.

Officers went to the store and one of the owners said they were not aware that it was illegal to sell human remains.

"She confirmed that the store had multiple human bone fragments, all purchased from private sellers, and mentioned she has documentation for these transactions but could not provide it at that moment," an arrest affidavit obtained by Fox 34 detailed. "She described the bones as genuine human remains and delicate in nature."

Police say some of the bones found were likely archaeological finds. One was more than 100 years old, and another was more than 500 years old.

Schopper was arrested and released Friday from jail on $7,500 bond.

Here’s what potential 23andMe buyers could do with your genetic data

Late last month, genetic testing giant 23andMe filed for bankruptcy.

The San Francisco-based company — cofounded in 2006 by former healthcare investor Anne Wojcicki — rose to fame for offering genetic testing services directly to customers.

When the company went public in 2021, it was valued at just over $6 billion. Now, it says it had debts of $2.3 billion, about $126 million in cash and cash equivalents, and needs additional liquidity.

The company’s descent into financial uncertainty wasn’t sudden.

23andMe had struggled with its business model, failing to turn a profit almost two decades after it began selling direct-to-consumer DNA test kits. Demand for its premiere product — a one-time test — began waning around 2019, and its effort to provide more consumer value through additional services wasn’t enough to close the gap.

Then, in October 2023, hackers accessed the personal details of some users in a data breach that cost the company $30 million in a later settlement agreement. The breach also made potential new customers nervous about the security of their data and more resistant to purchasing kits.

The company’s announcement that it was filing for bankruptcy and seeking buyers has now further raised concerns among consumers about the security of 23andMe’s database, one of the largest consumer DNA databases in the world.

Cybersecurity experts have urged users to delete their data, pointing to a host of risks: Genetic data can be used to further discrimination, enable financial fraud, and develop biological weapons, they say.

23andMe has said it will continue operating until a buyer is found. A race to acquire the company — and its data — has begun.

Here’s everything you need to know about the sale and what might happen to your DNA data.

What genetic data does 23andMe even collect?

23andMe gathers genetic data using saliva samples. Consumers receive a collection kit and submit about 2 milliliters of saliva. Each kit has a collection tube labeled with a 14-digit barcode.

“After the sample passes visual inspection, the barcode — which is the only identifying information shared with the laboratory — is scanned and the sample moves to DNA extraction,” 23andMe spokesperson Ann Sommerlath told BI by email. “Once a sample is successfully genotyped, the laboratory sends the resulting data back to 23andMe along with the accompanying barcode, at which point we can begin interpreting your data.”

Genotyping is the process identifying variations in someone’s genetic code. These variations influence a person’s physical traits, their development, and susceptibility to disease.

How does the company handle its genetic data?

Aside from sharing individual genetic reports with customers, if they opt-in, 23andMe says it uses anonymized genetic and self-reported information for research.

“When customers agree to participate in 23andMe Research via our consent document, they give 23andMe permission to share their de-identified, individual-level data with approved, qualified research collaborators outside of 23andMe,” Sommerlath told BI. “De-identification (replacing personal information with a random ID) enables researchers to protect the identity of individuals.”

23andMe shares some of the resulting research in its blog. In a piece from November 2024, for example, the company wrote that many of its users are descendants of Mayflower passengers.

23andMe was found to offer the “clearest privacy policy” in a review of 10 popular genetic testing services — including Ancestry, Toolbox Genomics, and Everlywell — that was conducted by the data privacy service Icogni.

Does a 23andMe buyer have to comply with its privacy policy?

Yes. And then no.

In order to make a qualified bid, “potential buyers must, among other requirements, agree to comply with 23andMe’s consumer privacy policy and all applicable laws with respect to the treatment of customer data,” the company said in a letter posted to its website on March 26.

Ron Zayas, CEO of Ironwall, a privacy service offered by Incogni, told Business Insider that the letter is just a guideline and leaves several questions unanswered.

“For how long is the letter good for? A day after purchase, a year?” Zayas asked. “What if a company like a data broker buys the company? It may change the definition of all the terms in the letter and even the privacy statement.”

Benjamin Farrow, a partner at Anderson, Williams, & Farrow, said the new owner isn’t legally bound to the existing privacy policy after purchase.

“There is no way a court will say the terms of service can never be changed,” he told BI. “It’s like buying a car. Once you own it, you can paint it, change the interior, do anything you want with it.”

Thorin Klosowski, a privacy and security activist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, said the security of a user’s 23andMe data will depend on who purchases the biotech company.

“It doesn’t take very many leaps of logic to think through some of the worst-case scenarios,” Klosowski said. “Whether that is an insurance company or a company that would grant easier access for law enforcement.”

Despite the bid requirements for 23andMe, Klosowski said, “We don’t really know how that’s going to play out.”

“We don’t know what would happen if an unscrupulous company didn’t do that. We don’t know how closely they would be monitored,” he said.

Who wants to buy the company?

Wojcicki, for one.

She said she resigned as CEO of the company “so I can be in the best position to pursue the company as an independent bidder,” in a post on X on March 24 announcing the bankruptcy.

A handful of other companies have also expressed interest.

Nucleus Genomics, founded by 25-year-old University of Pennsylvania dropout Kian Sadeghi, has explored the possibility of purchasing 23andMe. For Nucleus Genomics — a new player on the genetic testing market focused on whole genome testing — there’s some value in the data and technology of a company with a 20-year history, Sadeghi said.

Crypto nonprofit Sei Foundation has also expressed interest in acquiring 23andMe. “This isn’t just another bankruptcy. It’s a digital land grab on one of history’s most profoundly intimate data sets,” the Sei Foundation said in an X post on March 31. “We’re invested long-term in returning intellectual property (including your DNA) to the people. It’s the American thing to do.”

Pinnacle, an analytics company, is also apparently interested. In a LinkedIn post addressed to 23andMe’s shareholders, Pinnacle cofounder and CEO Ryan Sitton wrote: “We will give you $100 million for 23andMe today.”

How valuable is its genetic data?

There is no formula for quantifying the value of 23andMe’s data, so potential buyers and informed speculators are making educated estimates.

Kanyi Maqubela, managing partner of venture capital firm Kindred Ventures, which has invested in several healthcare companies, told BI that genetic data is particularly valuable for pharmaceutical research and development because it often includes early disease markers.

Pharmaceutical companies are typically “very data hungry, always looking for new data pipelines, and always looking to collect it at scale,” he said. So, “even partial genomic sequencing at the individual level is quite valuable.”

It’s even more valuable “if you’ve got metadata attached to it, so like demographic information, name,” he said. By connecting people across geographies and disease levels, health companies can start drawing correlations across the data, which makes it all the more valuable, he added.

Incogni’s Zayas said that 23andMe’s data “is probably worth more than the service they were selling.”

“If you look at the value of monetized information, a good cellphone can go for $50,” he said. “Good buyer information, good credit card information, good demographic information, you can start looking at tens or even hundreds of dollars per individual.”

23andMe has access to all of that and more, he said. “Just in research for insurance companies, that’s got to be worth at least a few hundred dollars per individual.”

The company says it has over 15 million customers, so by Zayas’ calculations the data itself is worth several billions, at least.

Jessica Vitak, a professor at the University of Maryland’s College of Information who researches data privacy, told BI that 23andMe’s data is “fairly unique” and “extremely revealing.”

“There’s a tremendous trove of not just genetic data tied to those accounts, but the majority of people who use the service also completed surveys, so there are other data points that would interest various third parties,” Vitak said. “Whether it’s advertisers, health researchers, or people selling data to a whole range of entities.”

Vitak said the depth of information is one reason 23andMe’s data is so valuable.

“It’s one thing if I decide to share information about myself, but genetic data isn’t just about me,” Vitak said. “It’s about all my direct family members, too.”

Sadeghi from Nucleus Genomics, however, said he is not making a bid because he thinks the data is valuable but instead because of another company 23andMe acquired.

23andMe only gathers “a small sliver of someone’s DNA and the most critical genetic markers are actually completely absent from the data. They’re just not there, and that’s why it actually doesn’t work for drug discovery. That’s why it never worked as a clinical test either,” he told BI. “The data is worth something, but is it worth anywhere near what people are positing today? Absolutely not.”

Sadeghi said the real value of 23andMe is in Lemonaid Health — the telehealth company it acquired for $400 million in 2021 — as a way to connect with customers.

What can the new owners do with the company — and its genetic data?

Sadeghi said he sees the data as one component of a “real-time, consumer-centric, quantified health platform” he wants to build.

“There’s no reason why you can’t bring together someone’s blood, genetics, drugs, urinary analysis, full body MRIs, wearables, all together in a single platform that can basically completely revolutionize disease prevention, disease diagnosis, and also disease treatment,” he said.

Kindred’s Maqubela said that “no one roots for a bankruptcy,” but 23andMe’s data is a “treasure trove” that he thinks could help grow the burgeoning field of multi-omics.

Multi-omics combines data from the genome (genes), proteome (proteins), transcriptome (RNA transcripts), epigenome (modifications to DNA), metabolome (molecules produced in metabolism), microbiome (fungi, bacteria, viruses), and more to create a more comprehensive picture of human biology.

“It’s a very young field, mostly stuck right now in pharma R&D, and then in some bench and lab research, and so it hasn’t yet broken into scaled provider and end patient uses, but it’s going to soon,” he said. 23andMe’s data, he added, could accelerate the development of mult-omics.

Maqubela said the recent advances in AI also present new opportunities to use this data. “If you put it in pre-training for a big LLM, what comes out on the other end of that is actually very hard to know and could be very, very, very interesting,” he said, referring to large language models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Vitak said potential buyers could use the data for research. “23andMe partnered with numerous researchers, so there could be buyers that would continue to expand access to that type of data to advance precision medicine or other types of research,” she said.

Given the breadth, nature, and potential of 23andMe’s data, Vitak and Klosowski said the sale is unprecedented.

“Any organization dealing with data as sensitive as our genetic material has a moral responsibility to take extra care,” Vitak said.

Are there laws that exist to protect you?

Vitak and Klosowski said consumers need more federal protections regarding genetic data privacy.

Some states have implemented laws to help protect consumer data, including Montana, where, in 2023, state legislators passed the Genetic Information Privacy Act, which is focused on protecting consumers’ genetic data. California has similar protections for genetic data with direct-to-consumer testing companies.

The federal government, meanwhile, enforces the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, which bars employers and health insurers from discriminating against individuals based on genetic information.

However, Vitak said the United States also needs something like the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, which enforces broader protections for data processing.

“The data breach and the sale are further making the case for why we need stronger data protection for consumers,” Vitak.

Letitia James and 16 blue states sue Linda McMahon over $1 billion in leftover Covid pandemic funding

The Trump administration abruptly cut states’ access to Covid pandemic funding for school programs, saying they’d had enough time to spend it.

Sixteen attorneys general and a Democratic governor sued the Trump administration on Thursday to restore access to over $1 billion in federal pandemic relief aid for schools that was recently halted, saying that the pullback could cause acute harm to students.

The suit, led by New York’s attorney general, Letitia James, and filed in Manhattan federal court, is one of the latest efforts by states to fight President Trump’s clawback of funding allocated to programs he does not want the government to support. The funding was part of a windfall of more than $190 billion that the U.S. Department of Education distributed to schools at the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

The government’s reversal “triggered chaos,” the suit says. New York was one of the states with the most unspent money: over $130 million. California had more than $205 million in unspent money, and Maryland had $245 million, the most among the states that sued.

“Cutting school systems’ access to vital resources that our students and teachers rely on is outrageous and illegal,” Ms. James said in a news release.

The coalition’s filing on Thursday comes nearly a month after 21 Democratic attorneys general sued the administration for firing about half of the Education Department’s staff. Linda McMahon, the education secretary, said the move would help the department deliver services more efficiently.

The White House also suspended millions of dollars in teacher-training grants that it argued would promote diversity, equity and inclusion, which prompted yet another suit from New York and other states.

Thursday’s move was made in concert with the attorneys general of Arizona, California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon and the District of Columbia. Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania also joined the suit; his state’s attorney general, a Republican, replaced him in that role last year.

The new suit revolves around the Education Department’s recent cancellation of more than $1 billion in unspent federal relief aid sent to schools to help address the wreckage of the pandemic. The Biden administration had previously granted many states an extension to spend their remaining funding through March 2026.

But Ms. McMahon said in a letter to state education leaders late last month that they had been given “ample time” to spend the money and that extending the deadline “years after the Covid pandemic ended” did not align with the administration’s priorities.

The states pushed back in their suit, arguing that much of the funding Congress had allocated had gone to programs not tied to “the duration of the public health emergency.”

In a statement on Thursday, Matthew J. Platkin, New Jersey’s attorney general, called the suspension of the funding “cruel.”

“This rash decision hurts school districts across our state, throwing their budgets into turmoil and hurting their ability to provide the quality education to which students are entitled,” Mr. Platkin said.

The unspent dollars make up a small fraction of the total amount that was distributed to schools. Still, superintendents across the nation have argued that the leftover money is not a luxury but a lifeline for students, and that its removal would force them to cut or scale back efforts to help children catch up in subjects like reading and math, along with other projects.

Some states said the move would threaten improvements to busing for homeless children. Gov. Maura Healey of Massachusetts said on social media that the move would “take us backwards” and jeopardize plans for math tutors, school health centers and building upgrades.

Ms. McMahon said that federal officials would reconsider extensions for states that explained why specific projects were essential for helping students recover from the pandemic, but signaled that the Education Department did not believe infrastructure upgrades qualified.

“They want this money for BUILDINGS, not learning recovery,” a spokeswoman for the department wrote on social media in response to the Massachusetts governor.

The flood of federal pandemic relief funding came with few outright spending restrictions, and districts used it on projects from hiring teachers to upgrading air-conditioning. But it also attracted scrutiny from Republicans in Congress, who claimed that money meant to “address students’ learning loss” was “being used to pay for radical curricula to indoctrinate students.”

NATO forces are dying in Ukraine.

Since ejecting foreign troops from Kursk, Russia, authorities have been performing identification of the dead bodies. Positive ID shows NATO country forces ARE in active combat against Russia.

According to the Russia Ministry of Defense, the totals below show the dead (. . .ahem . . .) "mercenaries" from each country who were killed fighting against Russia inside the Russian Oblast (state) of Kursk.

Identities and nationalities were determined from ID documents found on each dead body. Countries in BOLD typeface are NATO countries:

Poland: 1953

Georgia (Caucuses Mountains) 1230

Colombia (South America) 917

France 208

Germany 197

Great Britain (UK) 156

United States 89

Australia 17

Japan 4

For the entirety of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the US, UK, France, Germany, and other NATO countries have explicitly said they "are NOT participants in the conflict." Yet they have not only sent arms, ammunition, rockets, missiles, tanks, planes, armored personnel carriers, artillery guns and shells, they still actively provide intelligence and surveillance, their actual citizens are begin found dead, in large numbers, inside the conflict zone!

NATO countries saying they "are not participants in the conflict" is now and has been a deliberate lie.

The idea that these are all "mercenaries" is so blatantly false it would be laughable if it wasn't so pathetic.

Here in my country, the United States, I know that Congress has not declared war upon Russia. So why are there dead Americans in Kursk?

Mercenaries, you say? As far as I know, it is UNLAWFUL for any American citizen to engage in war against another country.

Who granted permission for American "mercenaries" to enter that conflict and fight?

OK, OK, I'll stop being naive. We all know that a large portion of these dead Americans were former US Military guys who got promised big cash money if they "retired" from their US Service and agreed to become "employed" in Ukraine.

We all know those offers of big-bucks-employment are coming to active duty troops, inside the armed forces, and those offers are likely being conveyed by active duty officers.

This is someone running an actual war while trying to claim we're not.

I'm tired of this charade.

I want my country out of all involvement with Ukraine.

This was a stupid action, concocted by stupid people in the Pentagon / DoD. Stupid. Really stupid people.

While Democrats weaponized invented Russia collusion claims in an attempt to sink President Donald Trump’s first term, in retrospect the party’s leaders have often gone soft on Russia when it wanted to reap financial or political benefits for themselves or allies.

From the Obama-era "Russian Reset" and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s Skolkovo investment project to Hunter Biden’s business in Moscow and President Joe Biden’s waiving of sanctions against a Russian pipeline, key Democratic figures reaped political and financial benefits from going soft on Moscow.

Newly declassified documents produced by the FBI and the Department of Justice’s Crossfire Hurricane investigation into allegations that then-candidate Trump or members of his campaign coordinated with Russia to influence the 2016 election wholly discredit the probe. For example, one key informant’s account was deemed unreliable, an official disputed a key media narrative, and key source Christopher Steele leaked his infamous dossier to the media.

Last week, FBI Director Kash Patel transmitted to Congress hundreds of pages of declassified documents from that investigation, following a declassification executive order from President Donald Trump last month. Just the News made all 700 pages from the declassified binder available to the public.

Despite several years' worth of focus on the allegations from the Democrats in Congress, an investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller “did not establish” any criminal Trump-Russia collusion. Special counsel John Durham, appointed to review the probe, ultimately concluded that “neither U.S. law enforcement nor the Intelligence Community appears to have possessed any actual evidence of collusion in their holdings at the commencement of the Crossfire Hurricane investigation.”

The "Russian Reset"

After Russia's two invasions of Ukraine, first in 2014 and again in 2022, senior Democratic leaders roundly called out Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin’s aggressive behavior, primarily targeted at the country’s smaller neighbor, Ukraine.

But in the years before Moscow’s invasion, Democrats enriched themselves politically and personally from Russian oligarchs and businesses in the region while empowering Putin with energy and technology deals that still haunt America today.

President Barack Obama, after taking office in early 2009, set in motion the merging of U.S. business interests with the Russian economy through the famous “reset” in relations between the two powers. Obama’s reset began in 2009 as an effort to cool tensions that had ballooned after Russia’s invasion of its small neighbor Georgia in 2008.

The reset set the stage for several prominent Democrats and their benefactors to profit from the burgeoning business opportunities in Russia being facilitated by the Obama administration.

Hillary Clinton, Skolkovo, and a half-million dollar speaking fee

In one case, the policy of Obama’s Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to support and develop Russia’s “Silicon Valley,” known as Skolkovo, may have undermined U.S. national security while the family’s Clinton Foundation pocketed donations from Russian donors. After Russia’s first invasion of Ukraine, she would later make an about-face, instigating a narrative wherein Russia allegedly interfered and deprived her of victory in the 2016 election in which she was a candidate. She called her opponent, Donald Trump, a “Trojan Horse for Putin.”

After Clinton was appointed to represent the United States at the newly formed U.S.-Russia Bilateral Presidential Commission, she helped direct investments from U.S. partners to the venture, which had already received $5 million in funding from Moscow, investigative reporter Peter Schweizer found in his 2015 book "Clinton Cash."

The Skolkovo project received backing and support from Clinton Foundation donors, like Google, Intel and Cisco. Additionally, donations from Russian businessmen tied to the Skolkovo project flowed to the Clinton Foundation. Andrey Vavilov, Chairman of SuperOx, which is part of Skolkovo’s nuclear research group, donated between $10,000 and $25,000 to the foundation, Schweizer reported. The Skolkovo Foundation head and billionaire Viktor Vekselberg also donated to the charity through his company, Renova Group.

Clinton’s spouse, former president Bill Clinton, also reaped rewards from the Russian reset, collecting a $500,000 speaking fee from a Russian investment bank, Renaissance Capital. The speech came at the same time that Secretary Clinton was opposing sanctions measures on Russian officials that later became the Magnitsky Act, Fox News reported.

part 2

The Bidens and Moscow

Obama’s vice president, Joe Biden, gave an early voice to the administration’s new policy towards Russia weeks after their term in office began. “The last few years have seen a dangerous drift in relations between Russia and the members of our Alliance,” Biden said at the Munich Security Conference on Feb. 7, 2009. “It is time—to paraphrase President Obama—it's time to press the reset button and to revisit the many areas where we can and should be working together with Russia.”

Hunter Biden, the vice president’s son, and his business partners took full advantage of the new thaw, waging a concerted campaign to squeeze oligarchs in Vladimir Putin's country for investments, an effort that ultimately paved the way for the first son to score a big payday from Burisma Holdings in neighboring Ukraine, Just the News previously reported.

Hunter Biden and his partners' pursuit of Russian riches began as early as 2010 when the “reset” was entering full swing with payments from a Moscow-based machinery firm and its "patriarch," and they intensified a few years later at a time when Joe Biden's son was actually still serving as a U.S. Navy officer, according to bank records, emails and congressional testimony.

Along the way, Hunter Biden and his partners like Devon Archer discussed plans to open up a Moscow office for their Rosemont Seneca Partners firm, create a U.S.-Russia business coalition and pursue a real estate venture with one oligarch that could have topped out at $1 billion, the evidence showed.

Ahead of the Russian seizure of Crimea and covert invasion of the Donbas region of Ukraine in 2014, Hunter Biden and his company were on the verge of a significant expansion in Russia after years of courtship. Rosemont was working on developing a real estate fund targeting the potentially lucrative Russian market as relations thawed.

To that end, the younger Biden and his partner, Devon Archer, courted Putin-friendly oligarch Ara Abramyan to back a new entity called the Rosemont Real Estate Acquisition Fund One. The pair also planned to form an action plan for a “U.S./Russia Business Council Concept” and investment in something called the “Cantor Russia Casino project.” The plans also listed a “Rosemont Moscow office,” signaling Rosemont’s full commitment to the Russian market, the emails previously reported by Just the News show.

The plans for a Rosemont real estate empire, however, ultimately fell through after Russia invaded Ukraine in the spring of 2014. According to Archer’s testimony to Congress during the impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden, he and Biden scrambled to recover their business and looked for investors based outside Russia, which eventually led to Hunter Biden’s now infamous work for the Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings.

Biden calls Russia "biggest threat" but waives sanctions on Russian gas

Within months of taking office in January 2021, now-President Joe Biden was presented with a thorn in the U.S. relationship with a key NATO ally, Germany: the ongoing dispute over the Russian-built natural gas pipeline NordStream2, which was set to deliver energy supplies to Germany until U.S. sanctions interrupted the project.

Yet, despite publicly touting his criticism of Russia and Putin, as well as warnings that the country was America’s “biggest threat,” at the same time, President Biden waived all sanctions on the NordStream2 gas pipeline, sacrificing a policy of preventing Russia from exploiting its gas supplies in order to improve relations with NordStream customers, who were our European allies.

Coincidentally, one of the main U.S. lobbyists supporting the NordStream project, Richard Burt of McLarty Associates and a former U.S. Ambassador to Germany, donated a total of $15,000 to Biden's presidential campaign in 2020, Just the News previously reported.

The sacrifice of sanctions to improve relations with Germany was short-lived, however, because little more than a year later, Russia would launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The pipeline was ultimately damaged in an apparent sabotage attack later that year.

Top Russian diplomat explains why Moscow trusts Trump

The US president’s “common-sense” approach is a positive departure from the Biden years, Sergey Lavrov has said

Moscow is open to continuing negotiations with the US becauseit sees a clear difference between President Donald Trump and his predecessor, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

Unlike EU countries and the UK, “the Trump administration is trying to get to the bottom of the issue and, most importantly, understand the root cause” of the Ukraine conflict, Lavrov told Kommersant in an interview published on Monday.

The US and EU “organized and funded the anti-constitutional coup” in Kiev in 2014, which triggered the confrontation with Russia, the foreign minister said.

“Trump has repeatedly said that the colossal mistake which led to the current events in Ukraine was the Biden administration’s decision to drag Ukraine into NATO,” Lavrov added.

Asked whether American negotiators can be trusted,Lavrov said Moscow should “not brush off” Trump’s overtures. During the first round of negotiations in Saudi Arabia in February, the US delegation stressed that other countries “have their own national interests that do not always coincide with the national interests of the United States,” he said.

According to Lavrov, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltzmade it clear that Trump values a pragmatic, “common-sense” approach to global politics.

Lavrov said the message Moscow heard from Washington was that “when their national interests don’t align, Russia and the US, as responsible players on the world stage, must do everything possible to prevent those contradictions from escalating into confrontation.”In areas where their interests do align, both sides should “not waste an opportunity”to pursue joint initiatives, he added.

“We know perfectly well what a mutually beneficial deal looks like – something we have never rejected – and what a deal designed to lure us into another trap looks like,” Lavrov said.

Trump initiated direct talks with Russia in February, stressing the need to broker a ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev as soon as possible. His envoy, Steve Witkoff, met with President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg on Friday, marking their third meeting this year.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison raked in $10,000 in campaign donations shortly after meeting with individuals linked to a nonprofit that stole $250 million from a federal program meant to feed hungry children during the pandemic.

“I’m not here because I think it’s going to help my re-election,” Ellison said during the Dec. 11, 2021, meeting with two future criminal defendants linked to the Feeding our Future scandal, according to audio obtained by the Center for the American Experiment, a conservative Minnesota-based nonprofit.

Days later, on Dec. 20, 2021, Ellison received $10,000 in campaign contributions from individuals linked to Minneapolis nonprofit Feeding Our Future, records show.

The Justice Department has charged 70 people in the Feeding Our Future case, which has thus far yielded 44 convictions or guilty pleas. Several defendants have yet to stand trial.

Federal prosecutors claim Feeding Our Future received millions in aid from the US Department of Agriculture during the COVID-19 pandemic to help quickly shuttle food to needy children.

However, only a small amount of the proceeds went towards helping feed poor children as intended, according to prosecutors — the rest was blown on luxury cars, property, jewelry and travel.

The Center for the American Experiment identified Ikram Mohamed, who is expected to stand trial in the case in December, as one of the attendees of the meeting with Ellison.

Salim Said, who was convicted of 21 counts related to the case last month, is also heard in the recording, along with others linked to Feeding Our Future who have not been accused of wrongdoing, according to the conservative nonprofit.

Gandi Mohamed, the brother of Ikram Mohamed and a defendant in the case as well, made a $2,500 donation (the maximum individual contribution allowed) days after Ellison met with the alleged fraudsters.

Three more $2,500 donations linked to Feeding Our Future were accepted by Ellison’s campaign on the same day Gandi Mohamed made his contribution.

Europe cannot be ‘permanent security vassal’ of US – Vance

The continent radically underinvests in security, and that has to change, the vice president has said

Europe cannot remain a “permanent security vassal” of the US, Vice President J.D. Vance has said, stressing that this arrangement is not beneficial for either side.

His comments come at time of geopolitical tensions between the US and Europe on a number of issues, including the Ukraine conflict, while the administration of US President Donald Trump demands that other NATO members drastically increase their defense spending.

In an interview with UnHerd on Monday, Vance voiced frustration over Europe’s approach to security, arguing that the topic has long been a blind spot for the region. “The reality is – it’s blunt to say it, but it’s also true – that Europe’s entire security infrastructure, for my entire life, has been subsidized by the United States of America.”

At present, he continued, only three European nations – the UK, France, and Poland– have self-sustained militaries. “In some ways, they’re the exceptions that prove the rule, that European leaders have radically underinvested in security, and that has to change.”

I certainly recognize, that it’s not in Europe’s interest, and it’s not in America’s interest, for Europe to be a permanent security vassal of the United States.

The Trump administration has been pushing European nations to invest more in their militaries since Trump’s first term, arguing that the US is shouldering the main burden. In 2014, NATO members pledged to increase their defense spending to 2% of GDP, though some are still struggling to reach this.

In February, Trump suggested that NATO members should consider spending as much as 5% of GDP on defense, later warning that “if they don’t pay, I’m not going to defend them.”

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte agreed that Trump is right to demand that European members step up defense spending amid tensions with Russia.

Numerous Western officials have speculated that Russia could attack European NATO members within a few years. Moscow has dismissed the claim as “nonsense,” saying it has no interest in doing so.

EU issuing US-bound staff with burner phones – FT

The new guidance reportedly aims to help officials protect their personal and professional data amid spying fears

The EU has advised staff traveling to the US to use only basic gadgets and IT devices to reduce the risk of espionage, the Financial Times reported on Monday, citing sources. The updates to travel guidancecome amid escalating trade tensions between Brussels and Washington over US tariff hikes.

Sources said the European Commission issued the new rules for staff heading to upcoming meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. Officials have reportedly beeninstructed to travel with burner phones – prepaid devices not linked to their identity– and stripped-down laptops containing minimal data. They have also reportedly been told to turn off devices and ==place them in anti-surveillance sleeves upon arrival in the US.=

The new measures mirror those used for travel to Ukraine and China amid concerns over Russian or Chinese surveillance, the sources claimed.

“They are worried about the US getting into the Commission systems,” one source said.“The transatlantic alliance is over,” another added. (What does that mean, they are intentionally trying to hurt the U.S.? Why would the alliance be over? That sounds like an enemy would speak. Are they spying on the U.S.?)

The European Commission confirmed to the FT it had updated travel guidance but did not specify the changes.

Luuk van Middelaar, chief of the Brussels Institute for Geopolitics think tank, told the FT that the guidance reflects a pragmatic shift. “It’s an acceptance of reality by the Commission,” he said, recalling the Obama-era scandal when WikiLeaks revealed US surveillance of then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her aides.

“Washington is not Beijing or Moscow, but it is an adversary that is prone to use extra-legal methods to further its interests and power,”he added.

The move follows US President Donald Trump’s ‘Liberation Day’ tariff announcement earlier this month, when he imposed 20% reciprocal duties on EU imports on top of existing 25% tariffs on its steel and aluminum, accusing the bloc of “ripping America off” with a 39% duty on US goods. Although Trump later paused the hikes for 90 days, a 10% baseline import duty remains in place.

The EU denounced the move and agreed to impose its own duties on US products, but has also paused the move, seeking negotiations and a new trade deal with Washington. The bloc has warned, however, that it could retaliate with tariffs on major US tech firms such as Meta and Google if talks fail.

EU-US tensions extend beyond trade. Trump’s threats to withdraw US security guarantees unless the bloc boosts NATO funding prompted an EU-wide militarization push last month. Brussels has also been frustrated over being sidelined in US-Russia talks on Ukraine and the broader thaw in Moscow-Washington relations.

Trump aides clash on trusting Moscow – WSJ

Russia maintains that Ukraine is the side that stands in the way of a peace deal

US President Donald Trump’s senior advisers disagree on whether Moscow genuinely wants a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict, theWall Street Journalreported on Monday, citing anonymous sources. (Immediately discounting this report, WSJ hates Trump and Russia)

A group led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg are urging greater skepticism, the report said. Trump, however, is siding with diplomatic aide Steve Witkoff, who is said to be more trusting of Moscow. Last week, Witkoff met with President Vladimir Putin, after the two already held talks in March.

Moscow maintains that it has always been willing to achieve its core objectives in the conflict through diplomatic means, while Kiev and its Western backers have advocated for escalation. The Russian government, however, has said it will not accept a freeze of the conflict, which will only lead to renewed hostilities later on, citing Ukraine’s violations of a US-proposed moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure as proof of Kiev’s untrustworthiness.

As an example of Trump siding with Witkoff, the WSJ cited a missile strike on the city of Sumy on Sunday, in which Kiev claimed that Moscow deliberately targeted civilians, killing 34.Trump, however, referred to the incident as a “mistake,”while Rubio’s State Department called it “horrifying” and Kellogg said it crossed “any line of decency.” (Kellogg is 100% pro Ukraine.)

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov saidthe missiles were launched at “another meeting of Ukrainian military leaders with their Western colleagues” masquerading as mercenaries. The Defense Ministry estimated that the strike killed around 60 troops, claiming that Kiev used civilians as human shields for the gathering.

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky told CBS News on Sunday that Trump’s criticisms of his leadership indicate that “Russian narratives are winning in the US.”

Senior Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev expressed concern about American vulnerability to foreign lobbying after meeting with senior US officials earlier this month, accusing theWestern media of waging a coordinated campaign to undermine the normalization of relations.

”We see attempts to misinterpret Russian messages, mischaracterize Russia and its leaders. This happens every day,” he stated, addingthat “direct dialogue is the best way to defeat this disinformation.”=

In an interview on Monday with Fox News, Witkoff said his almost five-hour meeting with Putin was “compelling” and put the Ukraine peace process “on the verge” of a breakthrough.

Mohsen Mahdawi, Palestinian green card holder and Columbia student, detained by Ice

14 Apr 2025

Mohsen Mahdawi, a Palestinian green card holder and student at Columbia University, was apprehended by US immigration authorities in Vermont on Monday, according to his lawyers and a video of the incident.

Mahdawi, who was a leader of the pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia last spring, was arrested by Ice on Monday morning in Colchester, Vermont, while he was attending a naturalization interview, his lawyer said in a statement to the Guardian.

“We have not received confirmation as to his whereabouts despite numerous attempts to locate him,” his attorney, Luna Droubi, said.

“We have filed a habeas petition in the District of Vermont and have sought a temporary restraining order restraining the government from removing him from the jurisdiction or from the country.”

-

His lawyers say in the filing that it appears as though Mahdawi is facing deportation under the rarely invoked provision that the administration has recently used in other cases, such as in their efforts to deport Mahmoud Khalil.

The provision gives the secretary of state the right to remove individuals from the US if their presence is deemed to pose “potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States”.

-

“Earlier today, Mohsen Mahdawi of White River Junction, Vermont, walked into an immigration office for what was supposed to be the final step in his citizenship process,” they said. “Instead, he was arrested and removed in handcuffs by plain-clothed, armed, individuals with their faces covered.

“These individuals refused to provide any information as to where he was being taken or what would happen to him. This is immoral, inhumane, and illegal. Mr Mahdawi, a legal resident of the United States, must be afforded due process under the law and immediately released from detention.”

In a video being shared online of the arrest, Mahdawi is seen in handcuffs being walked out of a building and put into a car by officers.

China Limits Stock Sales To Maintain Impression Of Stability, As Bessent Hints At Boosting Treasury Buybacks If Fed Does Nothing

Last week we explained how the escalating trade war between the US and China has gradually transformed into a theatrical war of who has the upper hand on any given day. And since it takes a long time for trade obstructions to hit the underlying economy, investors are keenly eyeing the stock, and especially FX, markets for any and every (early) indications of who has the upper hand (even if they are, as we show below, completely false).
