West preparing to ‘dump’ Zelensky – Lukashenko
The Belarusian president hinted at a US connection to Poland’s initiation of the grain dispute with Ukraine
Washington has given the go-ahead to its partners to “dump” Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky as he has become a nuisance, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko claimed during a government meeting on Friday.
Lukashenko pointed to the ongoing grain dispute between Poland and Ukraine as an example of this new policy, noting that Warsaw had been one of Zelensky’s staunchest supporters but is now sharply critical of its partner.
This shift occurred after Poland, along with Hungary and Slovakia, unilaterally banned the import of Ukrainian grain despite the EU having chosen to lift its bloc-wide embargo. In turn, Kiev filed disputes against the three countries with the World Trade Organization.
“Do you think that Poland is putting pressure on poor Ukraine today for no reason? No, they have been given the go-ahead from overseas: We need to dump this Zelensky, we’re tired of him,” Lukashenko said.
He noted that the US has an upcoming presidential election and suggested that no one will care about Zelensky at that point.
At the same time, US President Joe Biden stressed on Friday that Washington would stick with Zelensky throughout the Russia-Ukraine conflict and announced that US-made Abrams tanks would start arriving in Ukraine next week.
Meanwhile, Zelensky, who is on his second wartime visit to Washington, insisted that Kiev’s continued fight against Russia relied on sustained US military assistance and reportedly said that if it doesn’t get the aid, it “will lose the war.”

Gaige Grosskreutz, the man who was shot in the bicep after attacking Kyle Rittenhouse in Kenosha, Wisconsin, was hit by a car in a hit-and-run incident.
Grosskreutz, who has since changed his name to "Paul Prediger" explains how he was dragged under the SUV.
"I went on top of the hood and then was dragged under and stuck underneath the vehicle for a good 20 feet," he said.
Grosskreutz suffered a lacerated liver and broke multiple bones according to a report.

While the Democratic Mayor of Dallas says the city has thrived, Eric Johnson writes in a very frank WSJ op-ed that, elsewhere, Democratic policies have exacerbated crime and homelessness.
"The future of America’s great urban centers depends on the willingness of the nation’s mayors to champion law and order and practice fiscal conservatism.
Our cities desperately need the genuine commitment to these principles (as opposed to the inconsistent, poll-driven commitment of many Democrats) that has long been a defining characteristic of the GOP."
As we have written in detail previously, cities governed by Democrat mayors have seen the largest increases in homicide rates over the past year as well as registered the highest homicide rate per capita in Q1 out of 45 cities, according to a new report.
Homicide rates in 45 of the most populated American cities rose by approximately 10 percent on average between Q1, 2021 and Q1, 2023, and continue to rise, according to an April 26 report by WalletHub. Blue cities were found to have a higher increase in homicide rates compared to red cities. The report designated a city as red or blue based on the mayor’s political affiliation.
The top five cities that saw the greatest increase in per capita homicide are Richmond, Virginia; Memphis, Tennessee; Durham, North Carolina; Garland, Texas; and Washington, D.C.
Except for Garland, where Mayor Scott LeMay is a Republican, the remaining four cities have mayors who are affiliated with the Democratic Party.
The highest homicide rate per capita in the first quarter of 2023 was in Memphis at 14.19 per 100,000 residents. New Orleans, Louisiana, came in second at 12.76, followed by Baltimore, Maryland, with 10.47, St. Louis, Missouri, with 9.91, and Detroit, Michigan, with 8.52.
Excluding St. Louis, the other four cities have mayors affiliated with the Democratic Party. The mayor of St. Louis, Tishaura Jones, was a former Democrat member of the Missouri House of Representatives.
"In other words," the Dallas Mayor adds:
"American cities need Republicans - and Republicans need American cities."
And that's exactly what he does - changing his party affiliation to 'Republican', ready to leave office in 2027 as a Republican.

Sure looks like it. AFP is reporting that:
Poland will no longer arm Ukraine to focus on its own defence, Polish prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Wednesday, a few hours after Warsaw summoned Kyiv’s ambassador amid a row over grain exports.
To quote Andrei Martyanov, WOWSER! Remember the collapse of the Kakhovka Dam in Ukraine in the early hours of 6 June 2023, which caused extensive flooding along the lower Dnieper river? This is worse. This may explain the “Grumpy Gus” visage adorning Zelensky, his crew, as well as John Kerry and Antony Blinken yesterday at the UN General Assembly during Biden’s awful speech.
It is true that Biden’s speech sucked, but it was not the kind of debacle that would justify the facial expressions of dismay and anger. I think the Ukrainian/U.S. crew were stewing over impending bad news from Poland.
Initial press reports said that Poland’s leader, Duda , cancelled a previously scheduled meeting with Zelensky as Poland rallied a coalition of European nations to extend a ban on Ukrainian grain exports. The Associated Press reported:
Polish leaders have compared Ukraine to a drowning person hurting his helper and threatened to expand a ban on food products from the war-torn country. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested that EU allies that are prohibiting imports of his nation’s grain are helping Russia.
Now, Polish officials, who are trying to win parliamentary elections next month with help from farmers’ votes, are expressing dismay over some of Ukraine’s latest moves, including a World Trade Organization complaint over bans on Ukrainian grain from Poland and two other EU countries.
Now Poland is upping the pressure by putting the kibosh on sending arms to Ukraine. It is unknown whether this will this also include a ban on other NATO countries using Poland as a logistics transit hub for NATO weapons? Another critical question — What does this mean for the U.S. troops currently deployed in Poland? Barring some high profile rapes or brawls by U.S. troops in Wroclaw, Poland, I suspect the Poles want to keep the Americans in place an an insurance policy.

Hollywood's dual strikes are still going strong, and apparently so is COVID-19.
Jimmy Kimmel has tested positive for everyone's least favorite coronavirus, scuttling the planned live taping of his podcast with fellow late-night hosts with too much time on their hands, Strike Force Five.
Well, technically the Las Vegas live show was billed as Strike Force Three, as two other members of the quintet, Seth Meyers and John Oliver, weren't involved. So instead of soldiering on as the Strike Force Two, remaining cohosts Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon have called it a day.
"Well, Las Vegas, I got Covid, and sadly, we need to cancel this weekend's Strike Force Three show," Kimmel announced Wednesday on social media. "I could never live with myself if I got my hometown friends sick. Thanks to all who purchased tickets, everyone will get full refunds and we will try to reschedule if possible."
The Sin City show was scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23, and would have marked the first time that Colbert, Fallon, and Kimmel performed on stage together. Proceeds from the show were supposed to go to the hosts' out-of-work staffs currently impacted by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

The Russian Defense Ministry says 12 major strikes targeting military infrastructure have taken place in the past week
Some of Ukraine’s Western-supplied cruise missiles and depleted-uranium shells have been destroyed in a series of strikes, the Russian Defense Ministry has said.
Since last Sunday, Russian forces carried out 12 group attacks against various Ukrainian targets, the ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
The targets included Ukrainian aircraft and armored vehicles repair facilities, oil refineries, depots of ammunition and foreign-made arms, training centers for Ukrainian saboteurs, andaccommodation occupied by foreign mercenaries, the statement read.
According to the ministry, high-precision, long-range ground- and air-based missiles and drones were deployed during the strikes.
“As a result of the attacks, significant damage was delivered to the logistics system of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, operating in theKherson and Zaporozhyedirections,” the statement read.
“Part of the stocks of cruise missiles and depleted uranium shells” provided to Kiev by its Western backers were destroyed, it said. Foreign-made multiple rocket launchers and air-defense systems were also hit, the ministry added.
Ukraine received Storm Shadow/SCALP-Eg long-range, air-launched cruise missiles from the UK and France earlier this year. The munitions have been used by Kiev to attack Russian targets, including those in Crimea.
According to Sky News, Storm Shadows were deployed in the Ukrainian strike on the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the city of Sevastopol on Friday. Russia’s Defense Ministry said five incoming missiles had been brought down by air defenses, but the resulting debris damaged the building and caused a blaze. One soldier was reported missing after the attack.
Britain has been supplying Ukraine with depleted-uranium shells since March. The controversial munitions are intended to be used by the Challenger 2 tanks that London donated to Kiev. The US announced that its Abrams M1 tanks, which President Joe Biden said would begin arriving in Ukraine “next week,” would also be armed with depleted-uranium shells.
The delivery of depleted uranium shells by the West to Kiev is “is very bad news,” Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov stressed a few weeks ago. The use of such munitions during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999 led to a “galloping” rise in the number of people suffering from cancer and other diseases, he said, adding that the same should now be expected in Ukraine.
Earlier this month, the Russian Defense Ministry already reported a successful strike on a Ukrainian warehouse hosting depleted uranium shells.

Children aged 6 months to 4 years are supposed to receive three shots of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. The number was increased from two when early testing showed little effectiveness.
Three doses of the Pfizer vaccine provided little protection against emergency room visits, urgent care encounters, or outpatient visits, according to the new study.
Pfizer-funded researchers analyzed records from Kaiser Permanente Southern California. They included patients who tested for COVID-19 at an emergency department, urgent care, or outpatient setting, along with being diagnosed with acute respiratory infection. The date range was July 23, 2022, through May 19, 2023.

The French opposition leader should face trial for allegedly embezzling the bloc's money, prosecutors have said
French prosecutors have recommended putting conservative ex-presidential candidate Marine Le Pen and 26 other National Rally (RN) party members on trial over alleged embezzlement of EU funds.
The prosecutors allege that, between 2004 to 2016, money allocated to cover the expenses of European Parliament members was used to pay for assistants who, in reality, worked for RN, known until 2018 as National Front (FN).
Le Pen’s father and party co-founder, Jean-Marie Le Pen, was also implicated in the scheme. Overall, 11 MEPs, 12 parliamentary assistants and four other staffers were referred to trial.
If convicted, Le Pen could face up to 10 years in prison and a ban on holding public office for the same period, according to AFP.
The European Anti-Fraud Office reported in 2016 that Le Pen owed €339,000 ($361,000). According to her lawyer, Rodolphe Bosselut, the politician paid back almost €330,000 in July. The payment, however, “does not in any way constitute explicit or implicit recognition of the European Parliament's claims,” Bosselut said, as quoted by AFP.
Le Pen has denied any wrongdoing, arguing that the allegations against her were politically motivated. The party released a statement on Friday, saying that the accusations stemmed from “an erroneous understanding of the work of opposition lawmakers and their assistants.”
Le Pen came second during presidential elections in 2017 and 2022, losing to Emmanuel Macron. She stepped down as party president last year, but continues to lead the RN group in the French National Assembly.

Archaeologists have found an ancient wooden structure at the archaeological site of Kalambo Falls in Zambia. This structure — dated to about 476,000 years ago — has no known parallels in the African or Eurasian Paleolithic and may represent the earliest use of wood in construction.
Wooden artifacts rarely survive from the Early Paleolithic as they require exceptional conditions for preservation.
Therefore, archaeologists have limited information about when and how hominins used this basic raw material or how Paleolithic humans structured their environments.
Our find has changed how I think about our early ancestors,” said University of Liverpool’s Professor Larry Barham.
“Forget the label ‘Stone Age,’ look at what these people were doing: they made something new, and large, from wood.”
“They used their intelligence, imagination, and skills to create something they’d never seen before, something that had never previously existed.”
“They transformed their surroundings to make life easier, even if it was only by making a platform to sit on by the river to do their daily chores. These folks were more like us than we thought.”
Professor Barham and colleagues discovered an ancient wooden structure at the archaeological site of Kalambo Falls, which lies above a 235-m (772-foot) waterfall on the border of Zambia with the Rukwa Region of Tanzania at the edge of Lake Tanganyika.
The structure includes two preserved interlocking logs joined transversely by an intentionally cut notch. The upper log had been shaped, and tool marks were found on both logs.
The logs could have been used to construct a raised platform, walkway or foundation for dwellings in the periodically wet floodplain.
“This discovery challenges the prevailing view that Stone Age humans were nomadic,” the researchers said.
“At Kalambo Falls these humans not only had a perennial source of water, but the forest around them provided enough food to enable them to settle and make structures.”
They used new luminescence dating techniques, which reveal the last time minerals in the sand surrounding the finds were exposed to sunlight, to determine their age.
“At this great age, putting a date on finds is very challenging and we used luminescence dating to do this,” said Aberystwyth University’s Professor Geoff Duller.
“These new dating methods have far reaching implications — allowing us to date much further back in time, to piece together sites that give us a glimpse into human evolution.”
At Kalambo, the scientists also recovered four wood tools from 390,000 to 324,000 years ago, including a wedge, digging stick, cut log and notched branch.
“The finds show an unexpected early diversity of forms and the capacity to shape tree trunks into large combined structures,” the authors concluded.
“These new data not only extend the age range of woodworking in Africa but expand our understanding of the technical cognition of early hominins, forcing re-examination of the use of trees in the history of technology.”

There are two ways that they set about crippling the capacity of alternative news. One is by getting them censored on social media so that their volume is turned way down and fewer people can access their messages. The whole reason that they target the ad revenue of websites, and they are targeting Russell Brand's ad revenue, they're targeting Elon Musks's ad revenue is because that is the easiest, most effective way to cripple their capacities. The industry of news will be dominated by those with capacities. Tennessee Representative Tim Burchett described the House Oversight Committee's meeting with members of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as "elusive" as lawmakers continue to push for answers on unidentified flying objects (UFOs).
House members were briefed Thursday on NASA's independent report regarding UFOs, also known as unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), that was released earlier this month. Congressmen on both sides of the aisle have demanded greater transparency from the Pentagon regarding the issue of UAP after hearing from three witnesses in late July who testified about their experiences with unexplainable phenomena while working for the Defense Department.
But Burchett, a Republican who was one of the leading voices ahead of July's hearing to push for additional Congressional oversight on the issue of UAP, said that he left Thursday's meeting with NASA "disappointed," telling his followers in a video message to X, formerly Twitter, that the report "didn't say a whole lot to me."
"My colleague [Alabama Representative] Gary Palmer asked about classified stuff at NASA, and they said, 'We don't have anything classified,'" Burchett said regarding the meeting.
According to the congressman's video, when pressed further about the issue of classified information, the representatives from NASA gave a "very elusive" response.
"And so, what I think they've done is, they sent these two folks in here, like the Pentagon did, that have very little knowledge of the issue," Burchett continued. "So they can say they can hold up their hand before Congress and swear that they know nothing about the issue, and it doesn't exist."
Burchett said that he also pressed the NASA representatives about the testimonies that came out during July's hearing, as well as videos of UAP that have been declassified and shared with the public.
"So anyway, didn't get a lot from that, and I'm a little disappointed," the congressman concluded.
"We're probably going to have to get some more people from the Pentagon in there to tell us what exactly is going on."
"I just want the truth," he added. "Give me the facts."
Newsweek reached out to Dr. Daniel Evans, assistant deputy associate administrator for research at NASA who served as the designated federal official on the agency's UAP report, for comment Thursday evening.
NASA's report was compiled by a team of 16 experts and was intended to look at how the agency could use data to better understand UAP. The group concluded in its review that there was no "conclusive evidence" that suggested UAP is the source of extraterrestrial origins and suggested that the agency should play a "prominent role" in working to better understand the phenomena.
The report also called for greater transparency around UAP and suggested that the agency could help remove the negative stigma that witnesses feel when reporting experiences.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were among the big names who joined Kevin Costner at a One805 charity fundraiser in Santa Barbara, California, on Friday.
The actor hosted the One805LIVE! Fall 2023 fundraiser — which was held in support of the first responder community and headlined by band Maroon 5 — at his 1.4-acre beachfront estate, days after he and estranged wife Christine reached a settlement in their divorce.
Christine, 49, was not seen in photos of the event, though her name is listed alongside Kevin's as hosts of the fundraiser on the charity's website, which detailed that the event would "take place on the oceanside estate of Kevin and Christine Costner."
One805 provides financial aid and mental health support to first responders, and in a video posted by the charity on Instagram, Kevin, who is also an ambassador of One805, appeared onstage with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as they presented him with an award at the fundraiser.
In the clip, Meghan, 42, clapped as Harry, 39, walked over to Kevin to hand him the award and shook his hand.

“That you’ll be here to celebrate people you’ll never maybe meet,” the Yellowstone star continued. “The ones who are the first to rush in. And it's a place that I’ve had a lot of good luck in my life and I’ve tried to not throw up a wall around it, so thank you for coming.”
Oprah Winfrey was also in attendance at the One805 fundraiser. The former talk show host was seen in a video reposted by the charity, filmed by an attendee, onstage linking arms with first responder Sam Dudley and his service dog Rhonda as she introduced him.

Now, it may be just a matter of time before Florida Republicans, once unflinchingly loyal, seek distance from DeSantis and his hardball governing methods.

In 1217, a German monk looked to the starry southwest sky and noticed a normally faint star shining with unusual intensity. It continued to blaze for several days. Abbott Burchard, the leader of Ursberg Abbey at the time, recorded the sight in that year's chronicle. "A wonderful sign was seen," he wrote, adding that the mysterious object in the constellation Corona Borealis "shone with great light" for "many days."
This medieval manuscript may have been the first record of a rare space phenomenon called a recurrent nova — a dead star siphoning matter from a larger companion, triggering repeated flares of light at regular intervals. According to new research, the "wonderful" star in question may be T CrB, which sits in the constellation Corona Borealis and dramatically increases in brightness for about a week every 80 years. But it has been scientifically documented only twice — once in 1866, and again in 1946. (The star’s next long-awaited flare-up is expected in 2024).
In a preprint paper, available on arXiv.org, astronomer Bradley E. Schaefer of Louisiana State University argues that Burchard's record and another chronicle from 1787 constitute the first known sightings of the T CrB nova.
But how can we be sure that Burchard had spotted T CrB and not some other celestial phenomenon, such as a one-off supernova or a comet? Schaefer ruled out the possibility of a supernova pretty much right away, on the grounds that if such a violent event — which occurs when a massive star dies in a dramatic explosion — had occurred that recently, it would have left behind remnants that would be clearly visible today. (The Crab Nebula, for example, is thought to be the remnant of a 1,000-year-old supernova and is visible to most telescopes today.)
Considering nobody has observed supernova remnants in the Corona Borealis star formation, it is unlikely that this kind of massive stellar explosion was the culprit. Similarly, Schaefer eliminated a bright planet from the list of suspects, as no planets visible to the naked eye wander through that region of the sky.
The possibility that the event was a comet is a bit trickier to disprove. A comet was visible in the sky earlier that year, according to a chronicle from the St. Stephani monastery in Greece. However, most monks of the time were familiar with comets, which were considered portents of doom. It's unlikely that Burchard would have recorded a comet as something "wonderful," or failed to mention its tail, Schaefer contends.
The 1787 sighting was recorded by English reverend and astronomer Francis Wollaston. This account describes nova-like behavior from a star whose coordinates match T CrB's position in the sky almost exactly. While Wollaston identified this star using a name from famed astronomer William Herschel's catalog, Schaefer believes its true identity is T CrB.
Scientists will be ready for the nova's next expected flare in late 2024. When it comes, modern astronomers will add it to a centuries-long list of past records. In the meantime, researchers will continue digging through old archives to study T CrB's recorded history. Hopefully, such activity will allow them to make more accurate predictions about the star's behavior in the future.

Officials in Washington have suggested that Ukraine’s military forces won’t be able to cut Russia’s land bridge to Crimea as part of their counteroffensive or achieve other key goals, the New York Times has reported.
“Some American officials have said that the Ukrainian counteroffensive appears likely to fall short of its strategic goals,” the paper reported in an article on Friday.
Kiev’s forces are struggling to achieve the aim of reaching the Sea of Azov in Russia’s Zaporozhye Region, because the minefields set up by Moscow’s forces, they say, have proven to be “a potent defense,” the Times added.
According to US officials, conducting offensive operations would also soon become even more difficult for Ukraine “as the ground becomes soft and muddy” in the region.
The NYT also said that some in Washington have warned that “within a few weeks, the Ukrainian army will need time to rebuild their stockpile of equipment and to rest forces exhausted by the summer fighting.”
The Ukrainian counteroffensive was launched in early June, although Kiev has so far only reported the capture of a handful of small villages some distance away from the main Russian defense lines. President Vladimir Putin said earlier this month that Ukraine has lost more than 71,000 troops and over 540 tanks since the beginning of summer, while failing to achieve any significant results on the battlefield.
On Friday, President Vladimir Zelensky told journalists in Washington that Kiev “will do everything not to stop during difficult days in autumn with poor weather and in winter.”
Zelensky claimed that Ukraine has a “very, very comprehensive plan” to “de-occupy”Artyomovsk (known as Bakhmut in Ukraine) and two other cities, which he refused to name, in the coming months.
Ukraine suffered huge losses trying to defend Artyomovsk and the strategic city in Donetsk People’s Republic nonetheless fell under Russian control in May, after months of fighting.
The NYT pointed out that US intelligence and military had warned the Zelensky government against spending its manpower and resources in Artyomovsk, suggesting that it would be better focused on operations in Zaporozhye Region. “Some American officials say the fight in [Artyomovsk] has become something of an obsession for Mr Zelensky and his military leaders,” the paper said.
