The vice president has a portfolio and (finally) some stability. But she doesn’t yet have the polls.

Toward the end of last year, senior aides of Vice President Kamala Harris gathered in the vice president’s ceremonial office and sat around a table to chart out the year ahead. The group presented her with a strategy document.

It recommended that Harris get on the road as much as possible and posited that Americans weren’t seeing and hearing from their leaders enough and that they’d be wise to fix that. The plan also called for Harris to lean into issues they felt suited her skill set. The fight to try and shore up abortion rights across the country stood atop the list.

The US supreme court rulings which struck down the White House’s student debt relief plan, affirmative action in college admission and a Colorado law that protected LGBTQ+ rights portend “a national movement to attack hard-won and hard-fought freedoms”, Vice-President Kamala Harris has said.

Harris said she and other members of Joe Biden’s administration have a role in mounting a counteraction to the supreme court rulings, which she characterized as “moments of great consequence and … crises”.

The supreme court’s shift to the hard right became possible after the Donald Trump presidency succeeded in appointing the ultra-conservative justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.

Artificial cells demonstrate that 'life finds a way'

Evolutionary biologist Jay T. Lennon's research team has been studying a synthetically constructed minimal cell that has been stripped of all but its essential genes. The team found that the streamlined cell can evolve just as fast as a normal cell—demonstrating the capacity for organisms to adapt, even with an unnatural genome that would seemingly provide little flexibility.

"It appears there's something about life that's really robust," says Lennon. "We can simplify it down to just the bare essentials, but that doesn't stop evolution from going to work."

For their study, Lennon's team used the synthetic organism, Mycoplasma mycoides JCVI-syn3B—a minimized version of the bacterium M. mycoides commonly found in the guts of goats and similar animals. Over millennia, the parasitic bacterium has naturally lost many of its genes as it evolved to depend on its host for nutrition.

Researchers at the J. Craig Venter Institute in California took this one step further. In 2016, they eliminated 45% of the 901 genes from the natural M. mycoides genome—reducing it to the smallest set of genes required for autonomous cellular life. At 493 genes, the minimal genome of M. mycoides JCVI-syn3B is the smallest of any known free-living organism. In comparison, many animal and plant genomes contain more than 20,000 genes.

Although M. mycoides JCVI-syn3B could grow and divide in laboratory conditions, Lennon and colleagues wanted to know how a minimal cell would respond to the forces of evolution over time, particularly given the limited raw materials upon which natural selection could operate as well as the uncharacterized input of new mutations.

"Every single gene in its genome is essential," says Lennon in reference to M. mycoides JCVI-syn3B. "One could hypothesize that there is no wiggle room for mutations, which could constrain its potential to evolve."

Biden’s DHS Restarts Releasing Foreign Nationals into U.S. via Migrant Mobile App Despite Warnings of Extortion

President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has restarted admitting foreign nationals into the United States via a Port of Entry near Laredo, Texas, through its migrant mobile app despite reports that those using the app were being extorted.

As part of its expansive Catch and Release network, Biden’s DHS started allowing foreign nationals to use the “CBP One” mobile app — enticing those in Mexico who are pregnant, mentally ill, elderly, disabled, homeless, or crime victims to schedule a border appointment to get released into the U.S. interior.

“Scheduling an appointment in CBP One provides a safe, orderly, and humane process for noncitizens to access ports of entry rather than attempting to enter the United States irregularly,” DHS officials have said of the app.

As Breitbart News reported last month, first-hand accounts circulated that foreign nationals were being extorted by Mexican officials while trying to use the app.

For example, some said they were forced to pay thousands of Mexican pesos to keep their scheduled appointment at the border. Now, Border Report reveals that despite such allegations, DHS has restarted admissions of foreign nationals in Laredo.

In May, the DHS announced that the mobile app saw close to 30,000 foreign nationals released into the U.S. interior — indicating that since its implementation in January, more than 100,000 foreign nationals have gained entry to the country through the app.

That number is expected to balloon in the coming months.

As Breitbart News reported this week, Biden’s DHS has started admitting 1,450 foreign nationals daily through the app.

The new daily admission rate indicates that from July through the end of the year, more than a quarter of a million foreign nationals could be released into the U.S. interior after scheduling their appointments at the border.

“The White House is scamming the American people by claiming that inadmissible aliens who schedule interview appointments at the ports are ‘seeking to enter the United States lawfully,'” Andrew Arthur writes for the Center for Immigration Studies. “… what’s worse than the administration’s lies, however, are the security risks they are exposing the country to.”

Parents urged to get children vaccinated after spike in NSW influenza cases

Heath authorities are urging parents to vaccinate their children against influenza, after a spike in hospital admissions and about a dozen people recently transferred to intensive care with the virus.

NSW Health said half of those turning up at New South Wales hospital emergency departments with influenza-like symptoms are children, aged 16 and under.

They have also made up about 40-per-cent of all hospital admissions for influenza, NSW Health said.

The state's Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said since May, about twelve children had been transferred to the hospital's intensive care unit for treatment.

"I can confirm that the vast number of the children who have been admitted to ICU don't have any underlying health conditions," she told the ABC.

"And that's really what's causing some concern among our clinicians."

Dr Chant described the influx this year unusual.

"They have seen these previously healthy children that have come into the emergency department and required quite intensive critical care," she said.

"So we are just alerting the public that this is what is occurring, and the best step they can take is to get their children vaccinated."

Dr Chant said the influenza B virus seemed to be behind the severe spike in cases.

Children in an older age bracket were also becoming unusually seriously sick with the virus this season, according to NSW Health.

"We always know that influenza particularly impacts children six months to five years, and that's why that group is provided with free vaccinations," Dr Chant said.

"But this season we are seeing children in the five to 16 year age group — a group that generally isn't considered the highest risk — we're seeing those children end up in intensive care with influenza, and with complications from influenza," she said.

While this older group does not qualify for free vaccinations, she said parents were being urged to get their children vaccinated.

COVID in the community

Dr Chant also said that while COVID-19 was still circulating in the community it was not impacting children, or young people, as seriously as influenza.

She said overall COVID numbers were starting to decline.

"We have exited the last COVID wave," she said.

"It was a long flat wave and we have seen cases numbers drop ... but there still is COVID around.

"So we would recommend that people remain up to date with their vaccinations and keep taking simple precautions to not catch COVID."

Chinese officials Tuesday warned of additional retaliatory measures against the U.S. in response to Washington's efforts to curb China’s access to advanced computer chips, signaling an escalation in trade tension between the two countries a day after Beijing placed restrictions on the export of key raw materials needed to manufacture semiconductors.

KEY FACTS

On Monday, China’s Commerce Ministry announced it was placing restrictions on the export of gallium and germanium starting August 1 citing national security interests.

Gallium and Germanium are used in the manufacturing of several high-tech components, including advanced chips, electric vehicle batteries, radars and satellites and China is the world’s largest producer of both metals, according to Reuters.

Washington has not yet reacted to the measure, but a former Commerce Ministry official told Chinese state media Tuesday that this was “just the beginning of China's countermeasures,” and warned they would escalate further if more “high-tech restrictions” are imposed on China.

While the escalation threat remains vague, Beijing’s export curb has raised fears that the measures could be expanded to include rare earth elements, which are critical to the production of semiconductors and electric vehicles.

China accounts for more than 60% of the world’s total production of rare earth elements, nearly four times as much as the U.S.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The latest threat and export curbs come just days before U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s visit to Beijing. The Treasury Department said Yellen will meet with Chinese officials to discuss the relationship between the world’s two largest economies, “communicate directly about areas of concern, and work together to address global challenges.” Yellen’s trip, which is set to begin on Thursday, comes just weeks after Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to the country where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

KEY BACKGROUND

Advanced semiconductors have emerged as a key diplomatic battleground between the U.S. and China, as tensions between the two countries continue to simmer. The Biden administration has attempted to restrict China’s access to top-tier U.S.-made chips—including ones used in AI applications—amid fears that they could be used to develop weapons or cyber threats. Last month, the Wall Street Journal reported that the White House may further expand these restrictions and effectively ban the export of nearly all advanced AI chips made by U.S. firms like Nvidia, AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm to China. This move is yet to be officially announced and it is unclear if it could trigger the “escalation” that Chinese officials have warned about. Late last month, China’s ambitions to manufacture advanced chips were dealt a major blow after the Dutch government—purportedly under U.S. pressure—announced new export restrictions on chip-making machines. The restrictions are designed to target the Dutch company ASML, which has a near-global monopoly on advanced chip making machines.

Ban On Recording Without Consent Is Unconstitutional, US Court Rules

An Oregon law that forbids recording in public without consent runs afoul of the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment, a U.S. court has ruled.

Oregon law 165.540, first enacted in 1955 and subsequently broadened to bar secret recording of conversations, is unconstitutional, Judge Sandra Ikuta, a George W. Bush appointee writing for the majority in the 2–1 ruling, said.

Exceptions to the prohibition include recording at public meetings, such as city council hearings; while a felony that endangers human life is being committed; and by law enforcement officers while performing their jobs.

The law is content-based because certain groups, such as the law enforcement officers, are treated different than others, Ms. Ikuta said. That means it has to be narrowly tailored for a compelling governmental interest, or survive a test known as strict scrutiny.

Oregon does not have a compelling interest in protecting people’s privacy in public places, the majority ruled. Even if it did, the law is not tailored enough because Oregon has other laws that cover privacy concerns, such as a law allowing tort lawsuits by people who are recorded without consent.

The law “burdens more protected speech than is necessary to achieve its stated interest,” the judge wrote.

The judge also said that the law regulates speech to protect people’s privacy but that many people in public places don’t seek privacy. Instead of acknowledging that point, the law treats all speech in public the same.

When people talk in public places, the privacy of other individuals is only implicated if the speech is unwanted but the law does not incorporate that point, the majority said. They used the example of protesters who may want their conversations recorded in the hopes it will lead to publicity for their cause.

A Brisbane mum is suing the Queensland government after she allegedly suffered extreme physical and sexual abuse as a child in the state's foster care system.

Penelope Jane McMah claims in court documents she was raped by another boy while in a foster home when she was just 10 years old and was allegedly later forced to live with the same child at another placement - despite pleading not to be left at the home.

Lawyers for the 24-year-old have filed an almost $2 million civil claim in the Queensland Supreme Court against the State of Queensland over the alleged abuse and neglect she suffered while in the care of the Department of Children, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs and the Department of Education.

Ms McMah said the Queensland foster care model needed drastic reform.

"The system needs to change and it's not just small little details in the system," she said.

"It's the whole system - there's so many broken gaps in it where kids are just suffering."

'Mattress on the floor with 10 other foster kids'

Court documents reveal allegations that the foster parents Ms McMah was placed with when she was just 9 years old allegedly had a history of complaints regarding their conduct and sexual activity between children at the home in the years prior to Ms McMah's arrival in 2008.

According to the claim, the Darling Downs family had 10 other foster children in their care and four of their own children at the time.

Ms McMah allegedly slept on a mattress on the floor of a bedroom where a curtain was used to divide the male and female foster children, according to her statement of claim.

The documents state another foster child allegedly raped and sexually abused Ms McMah for one month before he moved to another placement.

One year later, Ms McMah was allegedly moved to the same home in Queensland where her alleged abuser was living, according to her claim.

"… the Plaintiff saw [him] from the driveway … when she first arrived," the court documents state.

"The Plaintiff reported to the Child Safety Officer (CSO) that she did not want to be left at the … placement since [the child] had previously done bad things to her.

Maryland Republican Dan Cox Says Someone Committed Fraud By Filing Election Paperwork In His Name

Former Maryland gubernatorial candidate Dan Cox on July 3 said that someone had falsely filed paperwork in his name to run for his state’s 6th Congressional District.

“I have not filed. We’ve reported this matter to the FEC for fraud,” Cox wrote on Twitter.

“I have made no such filing and Valerie and I have made no decision yet,” the former state delegate wrote in an earlier statement on Facebook. “Apparently a far left new Delegate from Montgomery County has issued a press release that I’ve filed and apparently media says someone has filed my name. I did not do so and intend to take action to find out who did.”

Currently, Maryland’s 6th District is represented by third-term Rep. David Trone (D-Md.).

In May, Trone announced that he would be vacating the seat to run for Sen. Ben Cardin’s (D-Md.) Senate seat upon Cardin’s retirement at the end of his current term.

Cox, a former state delegate, received the endorsement of former President Donald Trump in his 2022 bid for the governorship. Although Cox defeated the more moderate Kelly Schulz in the GOP primary, he was ultimately routed by the state’s current Democrat Gov. Wes Moore.

Prior to running for governor, Cox sought Maryland’s 8th Congressional District seat in 2016. After winning the primary, he lost that race to Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Cox was a vocal critic of former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan’s policies, which included mask mandates and stay-at-home orders.

In the state’s General Assembly, he introduced articles of impeachment against Hogan, but they were ultimately rejected by members of his own party.

Although he did not challenge the results of the 2022 election, Cox asked the U.S. Supreme Court in January to reverse an emergency state court order issued prior to the election that suspended parts of Maryland’s election law forbidding the early counting of mail-in ballots.

The court order, Cox held, violated the Elections Clause of the U.S. Constitution in allowing ballots to be opened more than a month prior to Election Day.

“Mr. Cox was the only elected official who saw an issue with what the Board of Elections was doing,” Cox’s attorney, Ed Hartman, told The Epoch Times in February.

FLASHBACK: Clinton White House was den of coke, mistresses: ex-Secret Service officer

Gary J. Byrne has devoted his life to serving his country, and risked it to do the same — as a member of the US Air Force, a uniformed White House Secret Service officer, and a federal air marshal.

And he believes it is his patriotic duty to do anything he can to prevent Hillary Clinton from becoming president of the United States.

As someone who guarded the Oval Office during the Clinton presidency, Byrne, in an exclusive interview with The Post, tells how he witnessed “the Clinton machine leaving a wake of destruction in just about everything they do.”

He says he has also seen Hillary’s “dangerous,” abusive, paranoid behavior.

“It’s like hitting yourself with a hammer every day,” Byrne, pounding a fist into his open hand, says of the former first lady’s explosive anger.

In his new book, “Crisis of Character: A White House Secret Service Officer Discloses His Firsthand Experience with Hillary, Bill, and How They Operate,” out Tuesday, Byrne makes no apologies for his anti-Clinton motivations.

“ ‘America first’ is in my blood,” he writes, sounding very similar to another presidential hopeful.

Byrne says he wants Americans to “vote [their] conscience,” but pledges to make sure “they have all the information that they need.”

For one, he thinks the Clintons’ own behavior bred an immoral White House culture.

Byrne revealed to The Post during the interview that Clinton staffers used cocaine on the job.

“There were some drug issues,” Byrne says. “Some people would come in to work in the morning, and they were barely walking, they would drop stuff off at the office, and go to the restroom where they would come out minutes later happy as a clown.”

He also exposes the “jogging list” for the first time.

“In the beginning of his first administration, when President Clinton was jogging outside, women who were dressed as if they were going clubbing or working out, started showing up at the southeast gate,” Byrne explains. “The agents . . . would get the women’s names, and run them to see who they were. If the women wouldn’t cooperate, they would be ushered out of the jogging group.

“Agents … insinuated that this list was used by President Clinton to try to meet these women,” Byrne says.

The book details how the president had as many as three mistresses during the same time period, including former Vice President Walter Mondale’s daughter, Eleanor, whom Byrne once discovered “making out on the Map Room table” with Bill Clinton.

What bothered Byrne more than the infidelity was the way Bill Clinton programmed the entire White House to accommodate his cheating ways.

Hillary, meanwhile, was a human minefield. The Secret Service was convinced Hillary posed a physical threat to her husband, and even gave him a black eye, Byrne writes.

She also cursed out her security detail, and she and Bill would often try to evade the Secret Service, making it difficult to protect them and putting agents at greater risk, Byrne says.

But what sticks most in Byrne’s mind is the personal destruction the Clintons wrought in his own life — the fear and turmoil he had to endure as authorities subpoenaed and harassed him as they investigated the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

It all could have been avoided, Byrne maintains, if Bill Clinton had simply told the truth.

Byrne’s revelations have come under fire recently, with some critics doubting he had the access to the Clintons he claims he had, and that his book details do not align exactly with his testimony to prosecutors nearly two decades ago.

Hillary Clinton’s spokesman has ripped the book, telling Page Six: “Gary Byrne joins the ranks of Ed Klein and other ‘authors’ in this latest in a long line of books attempting to cash in on the election cycle with their nonsense. It should be put in the fantasy section of the bookstore.”

“Anybody who asserts that what I’m saying is not true,” Byrne says, his voice cracking with emotion, “they don’t know any better or they’re flat-out lying.”

Yet, he confesses, “I’m not completely comfortable telling the story, but I am telling it.”

He says a number of people could vouch for his access, including George Stephanopoulos, the former Bill Clinton communications director; John Podesta, Hillary’s campaign chairman, who worked in the Clinton White House; and Jennifer Palmieri, Hillary Clinton’s current campaign communications director, who worked near Byrne in the White House.

As for his testimony during the Ken Starr investigation, Byrne — who never signed a non-disclosure agreement with the Secret Service — says at the time he gave narrow answers to specific questions, as instructed.

“[I]f my testimony wasn’t true, I would end up doing seven years,” he says.

To prove he’s being truthful, he says, he’s willing to undergo a polygraph test — if Hillary takes one too.

Byrne says he is not committed to Donald Trump, despite sharing his slogans.

“The only thing I’ve ever heard about Donald Trump,” says Byrne, “was that he built a lot of buildings and he gave a lot of money away to charity.”

But, he says, he will never vote for a Clinton.

“I know what the public image of the Clintons is and I know what the real image is,” he says. “And the real one’s dangerous.”

Two firefighters are reportedly missing on a ship at Port Newark in New Jersey due to a fire where a mayday was called.

Video released on social media shows a fire blazing at the back of the ship, with smoke billowing into the air and police radio chatter in the background.

"One of the firefighters had his legs stuck, and crews were attempting to remove him from Port at End of Suez street. Crews search for multiple firefighters continues, tweeted FreedomNewsTV's Oliya Scootercaster.

The fire started at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to CBS News, which added that it learned the fire had dissipated but a rescue of the firefighters remained.
