Ex-Venezuelan treasurer, husband sentenced to 15 years in Miami bribery case

A federal judge Wednesday sent a former Venezuelan national treasurer and her husband to prison for 15 years after they were convicted of accepting tens of millions of dollars in bribes in exchange for lucrative government contracts and then moving some of their illicit money to Miami in an unprecedented foreign corruption case.

Claudia Díaz Guillen, and her husband, Adrian Velásquez Figueroa, parents of two young children, sought lenience from U.S. District Judge William Dimitrouleas. But while he acknowledged their lawyers’ argument that the couple’s children would be growing up without them, the judge gave them a sentence that was a only a few years less than the punishment sought by federal prosecutors.

In fact, Dimitrouleas read part of the prosecutors’ sentencing memo when he imposed their prison terms: “The over $136 million received is an astounding amount of money, drastically changing the middle-class life of the defendants to one of multiple private jets, yachts, luxurious world travel, and even a high-end fashion line.”

In addition to prison time, the judge imposed a financial forfeiture penalty of $136 million and an additional fine of $75,000 each to be paid to the U.S. government. The defendants remained silent throughout the proceeding in Miami federal court.

In December, Díaz and Velásquez were found guilty of money laundering by a federal jury, including accepting bribes from wealthy Caracas TV mogul and political insider Raul Gorrín, who was indicted along with them but remains a fugitive in Venezuela.

Prosecutors portrayed Díaz as a “corrupt public official” and Velásquez as “her front man,” saying that Gorrín’s massive payoffs were transferred through offshore companies, Swiss banks, South Florida accounts, a Miami yacht firm and a fashion shell company. In exchange, Gorrín gained access to highly profitable Venezuelan government contracts involving bond deals and corrupt currency trades that yielded billions of dollars during the administration of the late President Hugo Chávez.

“She was in a position of trust, but she chose to take the money,” said Justice Department trial attorney Paul Hayden, who worked on the case with fellow prosecutors Kurt Lunkenheimer and Michael Harper. Hayden told the judge that federal authorities “believe they are hiding assets,” totaling as much as $6 million.

Both prosecutors scoffed at the defense attorneys’ request for far less punishment. Their sentencing memo sought two years in prison for the couple, who had fought their extradition from Spain to the United States.

Two key Republicans call for Secretary of State Blinken to resign over Hunter Biden revelations

Sen. Ron Johnson and Rep. Andy Biggs say Blinken should face impeachment if he doesn't step down.

Two high-profile Republicans who have probed the Biden family scandal are calling on Secretary of State Antony Blinken to resign or face impeachment over allegations he helped trigger an intelligence community letter during the 2020 election that falsely portrayed Hunter Biden's laptop contents as Russian disinformation.

The rebukes of Blinken by Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) came after the release Thursday night of testimony from former CIA chief Michael Morell that Blinken had spurred him to organize the now-infamous October 2020 letter to benefit the Biden campaign. Morell testified he agreed to do so because Blinken reached out to him and he wanted to influence the election in Joe Biden's favor.

"This, in my opinion, probably disqualifies him to serve as the Secretary of State," Biggs told Just the News in a wide-ranging interview Friday on the John Solomon Reports podcast. "And I know people keep saying, 'Andy, you want to impeach everybody?' Well, you know, Tony Blinken probably should be impeached, just like [Homeland Secretary Alejandro] Mayorkas should be impeached.

Biggs, a member of the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees that are currently probing the Biden family influence peddling allegations, said the revelation that Blinken allegedly was willing to accuse a nuclear superpower, Russia, of interfering in the U.S. election without evidence just to create a presidential debate talking point for Joe Biden made it impossible for him to deal credibly with foreign countries as America's chief diplomat.

"Let's talk about our allies who now don't trust us at all," he said. "And why would they? They think we're weak, untrustworthy. How in the world can he remain our spokesperson to the world? … I just don't see how he can, and he should go. I think he's irreparably harmed the United States."

Asked whether he was formally asking Blinken to resign, Biggs answered: "Yeah, in fact, I'll break it on your show. Tony Blinken, you should resign."

Johnson, who led a 2020 Senate probe that concluded Hunter Biden's foreign business dealings while his father was vice president harmed U.S. national security, also called for Blinken to resign if Morell's allegations prove true.

"And if he doesn't resign, he should be impeached," he said during an interview Friday with the Star News Network. "Again, so many members of the Biden administration have this level of deceit, dishonesty and corruption. This is a lawless administration."

The State Department declined to address Morell's allegations about Blinken, saying it would not comment on matters currently under investigation.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, who conducted the bombshell interview with Morell that uncovered Blinken's role, has demanded the secretary of state answer questions about his role in the letter and whether others, including the president, were involved.

"Based on Morell's testimony, it is apparent that the Biden campaign played an active role in the origins of the public statement, which had the effect of helping to suppress the Hunter Biden story and preventing American citizens from making a fully informed decision during the 2020 presidential election," Jordan wrote Blinken in demanding he turn over evidence about the letter.

Wagner CEO Yevgeny Prigozhin published an article on April 14 in which he made the following claims:

“The strategic role of Bakhmut is not so great. Bakhmut is followed by Seversk, Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, Konstantinovka, Druzhkovka and Chasov Yar … [T]he capture of Bakhmut itself will not ensure a short-term victory over Ukraine, the road to the Dnieper, or even the capture of Donbass.”

“The US does not need a quick war”. Washington wants to drag the conflict out as long as possible in order to destabilize Russia and “collapse [it] into many principalities”.

Russia’s Deep State, “a community of near-state elites that operate independently of the political leadership of the state”, is actively sabotaging the war effort.

To prevent the Deep State from making concessions to Washington, Russia should announce the successful completion of the “special military operation” and consolidate territorial gains.

To summarize: An oligarch who is spearheading Russia’s only discernable offensive in Ukraine says the war will continue for the foreseeable future, even if/when Bakhmut is captured. Meanwhile, a powerful group of oligarchs and bureaucrats want to negotiate a backdoor deal with Washington that would have disastrous consequences for Russia.

Strelkov’s “angry patriots” release manifesto

Igor Strelkov’s Club of Angry Patriots published a manifesto on April 17. A few highlights:

“The opportunity for a quick and bloodless victory over the Ukrainian state, which has become a weapon of NATO, was missed back in 2014 by the signing of the treacherous Minsk agreements. The military operation launched in 2022 could have gone according to a completely different scenario, but mediocre organization at the strategic, operational and tactical level led our country to a war of attrition.”

“Defeat in the war will lead Russia to catastrophic consequences. The United States and NATO states do not hide their intentions to dismember the Russian Federation and bring the Russian people into submission under a new [Western] yoke.”

Opposition party leader has claimed the French president has abandoned his people

Emmanuel Macron’s decision to push through pension reforms – in defiance of public opinion on the issue – has created a “total rupture”between the French president and his country’s people, opposition party leader Marine Le Pen has claimed.

“The problem is that Emmanuel Macron is completely bunkered,” Le Pen said on Saturday in an interview with France’s BFM TV. “He can no longer leavethe Elysée [presidential palace] without arousing the ire of a people he refuses to listen to and whose will he refuses to respect.”

Macron was booed by crowds in eastern France on Wednesday, when he made his first public appearances since he signed into law an unpopular pension law earlier this month. Union workers claimed credit for cutting off the electricity at a woodworking factory in Muttersholtz just before the president arrived, leaving him partially in the dark during his visit. The pension reforms, which included raising France’s retirement age to 64 from 62, sparked mass protests and civil unrest across the country.

“He generated anger, and it is he who is at the origin of the disorder, the chaos,” Le Pen said. “I believe that today, there is a total rupture between Emmanuel Macron and the French people.”

Le Pen accused the president of refusing to listen to public outcry on the pension law, reflecting a “failing democracy.” She added, “When the people say no, it’s no. We will have to tell him that democracy is doing what we said we were going to do. Democracy is respecting the will of the people.”

An Ifop Group poll released on Wednesday showed that Le Pen has overtaken Macron in public popularity. Asked which of the two personalities they prefer, respondents favored Le Pen over the president by a 47%-42% margin. Macron defeated Le Pen in last year’s presidential election by morethan 17 percentage points. He beat her even more handily in 2017, winning 66.1% of the votes.

France’s next presidential election is scheduled for 2027, when Macron won’t be able to run again because of term limits. Le Pen, leader of France’s National Rally party, plans to run for president for the fourth time. Even before Macron signed the pension bill last week, a poll showed that he would lose to Le Pen by a 55%-45% margin if they were to face off again.

The actor received millions for his role on the hit tv show but is fussing because it costs $8.00 to verify a Twitter account. The real-life drama resembles a typical Seinfeld episode and has brought a flood of hilarious criticism against Alexander’s ridiculous behavior.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk sparked outrage among celebrities now throwing fits because they have to pay an $8 monthly fee to maintain a blue check mark verification symbol on their Twitter account.

Before billionaire Musk bought Twitter, blue check marks were applied to user accounts to indicate that the account is verified and belongs to the person it appears to. Typically, verified accounts included celebrities, journalists, athletes, and public figures. But since taking over the social media platform, Musk has made blue verification check marks available to all Twitter users who pay an $8 monthly subscription fee and verify they are who they say they are.

So on Thursday, when the blue check marks were removed from the accounts whose owners had not signed up for the subscription, several public figures with enormous incomes who are used to receiving preferential treatment lost their minds at the prospect of paying $8.00 each month to have their accounts verified. Yet everyday Americans have treated the fee like they would any subscription service, recognizing the value in paying for the received product.

But since entitled Jason Alexander is one of the elitists who can not handle the thought of paying $8.00 a month to verify his account, he has opted to leave the platform. On Friday, Alexander tweeted, “Ok, everyone. Twitter has removed my verification. I will no longer be posting on this app. Anyone who posts as me is an imposter. I wish you all well.”

Little did Alexander know that his tweet would bring a mountain of comments roasting the actor, pointing out that he is a cheapskate for refusing to pay the nominal Twitter fee.

One user wrote, “You don’t have to announce your departure. It’s not the airport. You can just leave.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump’s behavior toward women, long a source of flashpoints in his political career, now faces a new level of scrutiny: a trial in a lawsuit accusing him of rape.

Jury selection is set to start Tuesday in the case filed by former advice columnist E. Jean Carroll, who says Trump raped her in a luxury New York department store dressing room in the 1990s.

Trump, who is unlikely to attend the trial, has called the accusations “a complete con job.” Carroll, who is seeking unspecified damages, casts the case as a #MeToo-inspired quest for accountability from the epitome of prominent men.

“I’m filing this lawsuit not just for myself but for every woman in America who has been grabbed, groped, harassed, sexually assaulted and has spoken up and still has been disgraced, shamed or fired,” Carroll said early on.

The lawsuit is putting Trump’s history with women under a microscope as he runs to return to the White House. But if a trial over a rape accusation would be a crisis for most candidates, with Trump, it remains to be seen.

“To the extent that the chaos around Trump is his biggest challenge, this reinforces that narrative,” said Alex Conant, a Republican strategist who worked on Marco Rubio’s 2016 presidential campaign. “The No. 1 thing I hear in focus groups of Republican voters is that they’re tired of the constant drama that comes with Trump.”

Election officials, appointed by Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R), are set to remove nearly 19,000 dead voter registrants from Virginia’s voter rolls. This week, Virginia Department of Elections Commissioner Susan Beals, appointed by Youngkin last year, announced that close to 19,000 dead registrants were recently discovered on the state’s voter rolls. The dead registrants were found after officials reviewed death records from the Virginia Department of Health dating back to 1960 that were not previously shared. Subsequently, the dead registrants will be removed and a new set of protocols will be used by Virginia election officials to more quickly remove dead registrants from voter rolls in the future.

The Republican entrepreneur is the second GOP candidate to throw his hat into the race.

Ohio GOP Senate candidate Bernie Moreno proposed at a campaign event this week that white descendants of Northern Civil War soldiers be eligible for reparations.

"We stand at the shoulders of giants, don't we? We stand on shoulders of people like John Adams, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, George Washington. That this group of people took on the largest empire in history. They said no, we will not stand for this. And won," Moreno said earlier this week, according to the New York Post.

"That same group of people later, white people, died to free black people," he continued. "It's never happened in human history before, but it happened here in America. That's not taught a lot in schools much, is it?”

The Republican entrepreneur is the second GOP candidate to throw his hat into the race. Ohio state Senator Matt Dolan is his opponent in the primary.

“They make it sound like America is a racist, broken country," Moreno continued in his speech.

"You name a country that did that: that freed slaves, died to do that," he stated. "You know, they talk about reparations. Where are the reparations for the people in the North who died to save the lives of black people?”

On April 21, Tim Meads of the Daily Wire reported that nothing has come of the $1 billion in funding provided to the NIH for "Long COVID" research. He is right. A brief internet search for "Long COVID" reveals a common sentiment along the lines of "scientists don't know what causes Long COVID." Even the latest NIH publication from March of 2022 (over a year ago) says, "Scientists don't know for sure what causes Long COVID." This is amazing, since it took only a fraction of that time to come up with a miracle "cure" for COVID and distribute it all over the world.

Mike Kennedy on the evening of April 21. The vandal left messages in red spray paint across Sen. Kennedy’s garage, including “Fash,” presumably meaning Fascist, and “these trannies bash back.” Sen. Lee posted a photo of the crime on his Facebook page and explained that he will not be intimidated or deterred.

Bragg Caves to Jordan; Pomerantz to Appear for Deposition in May

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg withdrew his appeal Friday in a case against Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and instead agreed to allow the congressman to question a former prosecutor from Bragg’s office, averting what could have become a drawn-out legal process.

The agreement between the pair permits the House Judiciary Committee, of which Jordan is chairman, to hold a deposition with Mark Pomerantz on May 12, as well as allows Bragg to send one lawyer to accompany Pomerantz for the purpose of objecting to privileged information during it, according to a source with direct knowledge of the matter.

Bragg had filed a lawsuit against Jordan this month seeking to prevent Jordan from enforcing a subpoena against Pomerantz, who resigned from Bragg’s office in February 2022 out of frustration that Bragg had not at the time wanted to pursue the investigation against Trump.

U.S. District Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil ruled firmly in Jordan’s favor on Wednesday, determining that the Ohio Republican had a “valid legislative purpose” for wanting to question Pomerantz and that Pomerantz had to appear for his scheduled deposition on Thursday.

However, Bragg quickly appealed the decision, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit granted Bragg an administrative stay to give the court time to consider his appeal. The court had asked Bragg to file appeal paperwork by Friday and Jordan to file his response by Saturday.

In reaching the agreement, Jordan is able to continue his investigation into Bragg, who is pursuing a historic criminal case against former President Donald Trump.

After this story was published, Bragg’s office released a statement on dropping his suit and reaching the agreement with Jordan, saying it was “pleased with this resolution, which ensures any questioning of our former employee will take place in the presence of our General Counsel on a reasonable, agreed upon timeframe.”

Jordan has said Pomerantz, who was serving as a special assistant on the Trump case when Bragg took office, is relevant to his congressional investigation.

In his resignation letter, media appearances, and a book he authored called People vs. Donald Trump: An Inside Account, Pomerantz has expressed his grievances with Trump in vivid detail.

In his book in particular, he heavily criticized the former president and discussed internal concerns people in the district attorney’s office had about the Trump investigation.

Along with seeking to question Bragg and Bragg’s senior counsel Matthew Colangelo, Jordan said in a subpoena cover letter to Pomerantz that he is relevant to the congressional probe because of his “unique role as special assistant district attorney leading the investigation into President Trump’s finances.”

Pomerantz would be able to provide “information that is relevant and necessary to inform the Committee’s oversight and potential legislative reforms,” Jordan contended.

Bragg, in his 50-page lawsuit, had sought to quash the subpoena to Pomerantz and “put an end to this constitutionally destructive fishing expedition” that he said Jordan was embarking on by investigating Bragg.

Bragg argued Jordan’s demands and subpoena to Pomerantz sought “highly sensitive and confidential local prosecutorial information that belongs to the Office of the District Attorney and the People of New York,” defying what he said were “basic principles of federalism and common sense, as well as binding Supreme Court precedent.”

Vyskocil decided, however, that “it is not the role of the federal judiciary to dictate what legislation Congress may consider or how it should conduct its deliberations in that connection.”

She added, “Mr. Pomerantz must appear for the congressional deposition. No one is above the law.”

The case is Bragg v. Jordan, No. 23-cv-3032 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

On the Monday edition of The Charlie Kirk Show, Kirk was debating on the necessity of a Republican primary as opposed to just focusing on one candidate. During the discussion, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis came up.

“And as we are progressing, Donald Trump is gaining steam, not decreasing with steam,” Kirk said. “It’s probably still a good idea for Ron DeSantis to run, especially in the primaries, or even participate in the debates. Better to run and lose and not be forgotten, and there will be another hot thing in Florida by 2028.”

Kirk then opined DeSantis has struggled in recent weeks.

“I say this is a friend of Ron DeSantis. He’s had a bad month and a half. He has not come across as strong or confident. His team would disagree with what I’m saying,” Kirk added. “I’m just telling you what the grassroots are saying. I see your emails.”

“He’s just kind of seems as a scripted politician where people right now wanna fighter in a time of widespread weakness, Donald Trump is coming across as strong and Ron DeSantis is not,” Kirk said frankly.

Kirk suggested some of the advice given to DeSantis could end up hurting him.

“Some of the advice that Ron DeSantis is receiving is, well, you know, ‘Don’t get into the gutter. Don’t get into the fight that Donald Trump will win best.’ There’s some truth — at the same time, are you going to engage at all? You see — the Republican primary, is it ending before it’s beginning?” Kirk questioned.

Although DeSantis has been rumored to be considering running against Trump for the 2024 GOP ticket, he’s currently throwing all his energy behind waging a war with Walt Disney World. DeSantis received widespread criticism last week after Fort Lauderdale experienced historic flooding while the governor was busy on a book tour stop.

Fox News ran a tough segment for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis during Friday’s edition of Your World, showing Donald Trump racking up endorsements while leading handily in the polls. One Florida congressman joined the program to add his name to the list of lawmakers in DeSantis’s home state who are endorsing Trump.

DeSantis is widely expected to declare his candidacy for the 2024 Republican nomination for president, which would put him on a collision course with the former president. Many GOP insiders view the governor as a potential savior who stands a better chance of defeating President Joe Biden or whoever else might be the Democratic nominee.

But as a report by Fox News correspondent Chad Pergram showed, Republican primary voters and members of Congress appear quite inclined to support Trump as the nominee.

“Ron Desantis once led former President Trump, but now Trump is thumping a prospective field of 12 GOP contenders,” he said. “A Wall Street Journal poll of 600 likely GOP primary voters shows the former president at 48%. Desantis, 24%.”

He explained Trump has so far notched endorsements from 59 members of the House and Senate, 10 of whom are from Florida.

“Only one member from Florida supported DeSantis,” he said.

Pergram concluded his report and Cavuto welcomed Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL). He asked the Florida congressman who he is endorsing.

“Well, I’m announcing that I’ll be supporting President Donald J. Trump for president in 2024,” he replied. “I think he gives us the best chance of winning. He had a solid track record as president.”

“Now, did you let both candidates know that that was your preference?” Cavuto asked.

“Yes I did, before I announced today,” he answered. “Obviously, the president knows, but also Governor Desantis knows exactly who I was going to support.”

Cavuto asked how DeSantis reacted.

“Well, I think the governor understands,” Giminez said.

Ex-CIA chief spills on how he got spies to write false Hunter Biden laptop letter to ‘help Biden’

Joe Biden’s presidential campaign prompted former acting CIA Director Mike Morell to “help Biden” by organizing 50 colleagues to sign a letter in October 2020 falsely claiming that damning emails from Hunter Biden’s laptop published by The Post were Russian disinformation.

In private sworn testimony, Morell told the House Judiciary Committee that Antony Blinken, now secretary of state, was the senior campaign official who reached out to him “on or before” Oct. 17, 2020, three days after The Post published an email from the laptop suggesting Hunter had introduced his Ukrainian business partner to his father, then-Vice President Biden.

Morell, identified as a potential CIA director under Biden, said he organized the letter to “help Vice President Biden … because I wanted him to win the election.”

Until Blinken’s call, Morell told House investigators, he had no intention of writing any statement exonerating Biden.

But he agreed that the conversation with Blinken “triggered … that intent” in him.

At 10:53 p.m. the night of the call, Blinken emailed Morell a USA Today article claiming that the FBI was examining whether Hunter’s laptop was part of a “disinformation campaign.”

At the bottom of Blinken’s email was the signature block of Andrew Bates, then-director of rapid response for the Biden campaign.

Morell said he ​​did “a little bit of my own research,” then reached out to retired CIA senior operations officer Marc Polymeropoulos for assistance in compiling the letter discrediting The Post’s reporting.

Over the next two days, Morell gathered signatures from 51 former intelligence officials, including himself and four other former CIA directors, including John Brennan and Leon Panetta.

Morell testified that he sent an email telling Nick Shapiro, former deputy chief of staff to Brennan, that the Biden campaign wanted the statement to go to a particular reporter at the Washington Post and that he should send the statement to the campaign as well.

Morell did not recall why he told Shapiro the campaign wanted the statement to go to this reporter first and admitted that he may have spoken to the campaign on another occasion.

In the end, Shapiro took the letter to Politico, which published it on Oct. 19 under the headline: “Hunter Biden story is Russian disinfo, dozens of former officials say.”

The letter alleged that the New York Post story “has all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.”

The letter was used by candidate Joe Biden during the Oct. 22 debate against President Donald Trump to deflect accusations about his involvement in his family’s international influence-peddling operation, which had garnered millions of dollars from China and Ukraine while he was vice president.

It was also used to try to discredit The Post’s reporting that had embarrassed candidate Biden by contradicting his claims during the campaign that he had never spoken to his son about his overseas business dealings.

The bank has said it shut the convicted sex offender’s accounts in 2013, but its bankers were still meeting with him years later, people familiar with the matter said.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. had ties to Jeffrey Epstein that ran deeper than the bank has acknowledged and extended years beyond when it decided to close the convicted sex offender’s accounts, according to people familiar with the matter.

Mary Erdoes, a top lieutenant to Chief Executive Jamie Dimon, made two trips to Epstein’s townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, in 2011 and 2013, when Epstein still was a client of the bank, said the people familiar with the matter. She exchanged dozens of emails with him and discussed sharing with him fees related to a charitable fund the bank was considering launching, the people said.

John Duffy, who ran JPMorgan’s U.S. private bank for the ultrarich, went to Epstein’s townhouse for a meeting in April 2013, the people said. One month later, the private bank renewed an authorization allowing Epstein to borrow money against his accounts despite repeated warnings from compliance staffers about his unusual banking practices.

American Express Global Business Travel and Welcome.US have reportedly teamed up with former Presidents Obama, Clinton and George W. Bush's nongovernmental organization (NGO) called Miles4Migrants to fly migrants to communities across the U.S.

Welcome.US is an NGO that was initially launched to work with President Joe Biden's administration to facilitate some of the 85,000 Afghans who came into the U.S. in 2021 and 2022 after the debacle created when the U.S. evacuated from Afghanistan, according to Breitbart.

Welcome.US is also linked to billionaire George Soros's Open Society Foundation through some of his board members sitting on their "National Welcome Council."

Now Miles4Migrants and American Express Global Business Travel are reportedly teaming up with Welcome.US to raise money for migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela, Ukraine and Nicaragua to be flown into communities across the country.

"Donations are needed to fund the flights for newcomers to travel to the United States," the initiative's webpage reads.

"Those forced to flee often leave behind all but what they can carry, and the costs of international travel can be prohibitive," the webpage continues. "Welcome Connect Travel removes the cost of travel as a barrier for both sponsors in the United States and the displaced families they are supporting through humanitarian sponsorship."

According to Sen. Ron Johnson's (R-Wisc.) comments in a hearing earlier this week, roughly five million illegal immigrants have entered the United States since President Biden took office in 2021.

Some Republican Senators are helping advance Joe Biden’s agenda.

Due to the absence of Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein, who is on medical leave, the Senate Judiciary Committee is tied with ten Democrats and ten Republicans.

This means that without Republican support, Democrats can’t advance judicial nominees.

On Thursday, The Senate Judiciary Committee advanced seven judicial nominees with the help of some Republican Senators.

Republican senators Lindsey Graham, Chuck Grassley, and Mike Lee are among those who voted for Democrat nominees.

The Epoch Times reported:

Republican senators joined Democrat colleagues in advancing multiple judicial nominees from a Senate panel after a weekslong pause due to the absence of a Democrat senator.

The Senate Judiciary Committee discharged seven nominees from President Joe Biden on April 20 as at least one Republican joined all remaining Democrats on the panel.

GOP senators helped advance Jeffrey Cummings and LaShonda Hunt, nominated as U.S. District Court judges for the Northern District of Illinois; Orelia Merchant, nominated as U.S. District Court judge for the Eastern District of New York; Michael Farbiarz and Robert Kirsch, nominated as U.S. District Court judges for the District of New Jersey; and Monica Almadani and Wesley Hsu, nominated as U.S. District Court judges for Central District of California.

Without Republican support, Democrats cannot advance nominees to the full Senate. The judiciary panel is charged with considering nominees offered by Biden. Feinstein voted by proxy for each nominee, but proxy votes are only allowed under committee rules if they are not the deciding vote, CNN reported.

Five nominees who didn’t get bipartisan support were shelved.

The Washington Examiner reported:

Durbin has sought to advance batches of judicial nominees together at one time, regardless of whether they have bipartisan support. He chose to shelve five nominees lacking GOP support, including Michael Delaney to the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals.

Delaney, New Hampshire’s former deputy attorney general, has been criticized by Democratic senators concerned about his handling of a 2015 case in which Delaney requested that an underage sexual assault victim’s identity be unmasked if the suit went to trial.

Other nominees who were tabled include Amanda K. Brailsford, to be U.S. District Judge for the District of Idaho, S. Kato Crews, to be U.S. District Judge for the District of Colorado, and Molly R. Silfen, to the U.S. Court of Federal Claims.

Earlier in the week, an attempt by Democrats to temporarily replace Senator Feinstein was blocked by Republicans.

Six cattle that died mysteriously in Texas had their tongues removed, authorities said, and the hide around one side of their mouths was also gone, with no visible blood.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office said on Wednesday that the cause of death for the six cattle is unknown, according to a report by NBC News.

The animals, each of which belonged to a separate pasture, were found alongside Texas State Highway in three different counties — Madison, Brazos, and Robertson — the sheriff’s office added.

Five of the cattle were adults; one was a yearling. Two of the cattle had their genitalia and anuses removed, with a circular cut that authorities said had been made with the “same precision as the cuts noted around the jaw lines of each cow.”

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office in Texas reportedly found out about five of the cattle deaths after local ranchers alerted authorities to a dead 6-year-old longhorn-cross cow.

All six bodies were found in undisturbed grass, with no clear signs of struggle and no footprints or tire tracks nearby.

“Ranchers also reported that no predators or birds would scavenge the remains of the cow, leaving it to decay untouched for several weeks,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Authorities added that similar findings have been reported across the country, and the sheriff’s office is now working with other law enforcement agencies to try to crack the case.

In 2019, authorities in Oregon discovered five dead bulls that had their genitalia and tongues removed as well, The Associated Press reported. It remains unclear if those deaths were ever solved.

Beijing’s ambassador to France has claimed the legal status of Ukraine and other former USSR republicsisn’t “concrete”

China’s ambassador to France has called into question the sovereignty ofUkraine and other former Soviet republics, suggesting that their hazy status under international law makes it difficult to resolve conflicts over disputed territories such as Crimea. (This is true, Ukraine never filed the papers to be an independent country)

“Even these countries of the former Soviet Union don’t have effective status in international law because there isno international agreement to make their status as a sovereign country concrete,” Ambassador Lu Shaye said on Saturday in an interview with French broadcaster LCI.

Asked by Swiss journalist Darius Rochebin whether Crimea is Ukrainian territory, Lu said, “It depends on how you perceive the problem . . . . It’s not that simple.”

Rochebin tried to correct his guest, saying, “Sorry, according to international law, you know it’s Ukraine. Under international law, you can argue it, you can dispute it, but this is Ukraine.” Lu replied, “Crimea was originally part of Russia, wasn’t it? It was [Soviet leader Nikita] Khrushchev who gave Crimea to Ukraine in the Soviet Union.”

Pressed again on the peninsula’s status, the Chinese diplomat said, “Now, we must not quarrel about this kind of problem again.Now, the most urgent thing is to stop, to cease fire, to stop.”

Chinese officials have tried to maintain a neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, resisting pressure from the US and other Western powers to join in condemning Moscow and imposing sanctions. Beijing, which proposed a 12-point peace plan in February, has emphasized the need to stop the bloodshed in Ukraine and work toward a diplomatic solution that accounts for the security concerns of all parties involved.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has vowed to recapture all of his country’s territory, including Crimea – a goal that most of Kiev’sWestern backers don’t see as realistic. Residents of the peninsula voted overwhelmingly for Crimea to become part of Russia in 2014, following a US-backed overthrow of Ukraine’s elected government.

Wargame reveals key US weakness in potential Taiwan war

A think tank has found that Washington would be unable to resupply the island with weapons in the event of a Chinese invasion

A wargame modeling exercise ordered by a US congressional committee has shown that it would beimpossible for Washington to resupply Taiwanwith weapons and equipment after a Chinese invasion of the self-governing island.

The exercise was carried out this week by the US House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, with help from think tank Center for a New American Security in Washington. “We are well within the window of maximum danger for a Chinese Communist Party invasion of Taiwan, and yesterday’s war game stressed the need to take action to deter CCP aggression and arm Taiwan to the teeth before any crisis begins,” US Representative Mike Gallagher, a Wisconsin Republican who chairs the committee, said on Thursday in a statement.

The exercise showed that US forces would suffer heavy losses if the Pentagon doesn’t shore up its stockpiles of long-range missiles and negotiate use of more military bases in the Asia-Pacific region, Reuters reported, citing an unidentified person familiar with the modeling results. The conflict would leave the world’s financial markets in “absolute tatters.”

“The business community is not taking the threat of a Taiwan crisis seriously enough,”Gallagher said, warning that a lax attitude on the issue “verges on dereliction of fiduciary duty.”

Tensions in the Taiwan Strait have escalated in the past year, with Chinese President Xi Jinping vowing to reunify the mainland with its breakaway province – by force if necessary – and US President Joe Biden repeatedly hinting that Washington would intervene militarily if China invaded. Beijing broke off security and climate ties with the US last August, after then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shrugged off warnings from Chinese officials and went through with a visit to Taipei.

Earlier this year, another Washington think tank, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), ran 24 different wargame scenarios for a US-China conflict over Taiwan. The study found the US and Japan would emerge victorious but that they would lose dozens of warships, hundreds of planes and thousands of troops. Taiwan would be left in ruins, while China would lose hundreds of ships and aircraft, as well as tens of thousands of troops, the CSIS said.

In light of the resupply problem, Gallagher said, Washington must accelerate deliveries of the $19 billion in US weaponry that Taiwan has ordered. He also called for more joint training exercises, reinforcement of US military installations in the region, and increased missile production.

“The goal of course is to deter China from launching the invasion,” Gallagher said in a Fox News interview before Wednesday’s wargame. “One of the obvious lessons from the failure of deterrence in Ukraine is that when it breaks down, it’s very costly in terms of lives and blood and treasure. So we are conducting this wargame in order to prevent a war.”

Gallagher added that “peace can only be achieved through strength, particularly since Xi Jinping appears to be preparing his country for war. I’m sure he’d prefer to have conquest without war. We need to be ready, and we’re not moving fast enough.”

Schools and homeowners in parts of Monmouth County have been told to be ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice, as Environmental Protection Agency crews do cleanup work at a former industrial plant in the village of Farmingdale near the Howell Township border, NBC New York reported.

The former Compounders Inc. chemical plant has long been shut down, but more than 400 rusting, abandoned drums remain, and it’s not clear how safe it is to move them. For decades, chemicals were mixed for customers on-site.

In February, local firefighters were dispatched to the site and discovered materials burning inside an old metal structure. They also found the drums and smelled a chemical odor and alerted environmental officials.

One resident told NBC New York she remembers decades ago when her children were coming home from school, and they saw drum lids exploding — up in the air.

That kind of thing is still entirely possible at the site because no one knows for sure what chemicals are still present, officials warn.

Family of Halyna Hutchins to proceed with civil lawsuit against Alec Baldwin

The family of Halyna Hutchins will continue its civil lawsuit against Alec Baldwin over her death, despite criminal charges against the actor being formally dismissed.

Legal representatives for the family said Baldwin could not “escape from the fact that he had a major role in a tragedy”.

It comes after New Mexico prosecutors formally dismissed charges of involuntary manslaughter brought against Baldwin on Friday.

The actor had been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter following the fatal shooting of cinematographer Ms Hutchins during a rehearsal on the set of his movie Rust in Santa Fe, New Mexico in October 2021.

Prosecutors said while they were currently unable to proceed with the case, the decision to dismiss the charges did not “absolve Mr Baldwin of criminal culpability” and that investigations would continue.

The family of Ms Hutchins filed a civil lawsuit on February 9 to sue both the actor and the Rust movie production company for alleged battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, and loss of consortium.

SYDNEY (AP) — A team of explorers announced it found a sunken Japanese ship that was transporting Allied prisoners of war when it was torpedoed off the coast of the Philippines in 1942, resulting in Australia’s largest maritime wartime loss with a total of 1,080 lives.

The wreck of the Montevideo Maru was located after a 12-day search at a depth of over 4000 meter (13,120 feet) — deeper than the Titanic — off Luzon island in the South China Sea, using an autonomous underwater vehicle with in-built sonar.

There will be no efforts to remove artifacts or human remains out of respect for the families of those who died, said a statement Saturday from the Sydney-based Silentworld Foundation, a not-for-profit dedicated to maritime archaeology and history. It took part in the mission together with Dutch deep-sea survey specialists Fugro and Australia’s Defense Department.

“The extraordinary effort behind this discovery speaks for the enduring truth of Australia’s solemn national promise to always remember and honour those who served our country,” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said. “This is the heart and the spirit of Lest We Forget.”

The Montevideo Maru was transporting prisoners and civilians who were captured after the fall of Rabaul in Papua New Guinea. The ship was not marked as carrying POWs, and on July 1, 1942, the American submarine Sturgeon, after stalking the ship through the night, fired four torpedoes, which found their target, sinking the vessel in less than 10 minutes.

Those killed included 1,080 people from 14 nations, including 979 Australians.

“Families waited years for news of their missing loved ones, before learning of the tragic outcome of the sinking,” said Silentworld director John Mullen. “Some never fully came to accept that their loved ones were among the victims. Today, by finding the vessel, we hope to bring closure to the many families devastated by this terrible disaster.”
