Trump’s Fundraising Arm Under Federal Investigation: REPORT

A federal grand jury investigating events leading up to Jan. 6 is probing former President Donald Trump’s Save America PAC, according to multiple reports.

The grand jury issued subpoenas intended to probe the PAC’s formation history, fundraising, money reception and spending record, ABC News reported. Around six Trump White House and 2020 campaign aides including Beau Harrison and William S. Russell, who have both worked for the former president since he left office, were subpoenaed this week, familiar sources told The New York Times.

Save American PAC was started not long after the 2020 presidential election. Records indicated the PAC’s cash funds stood at slightly less than $100 million at July’s end, ABC News said.

At least one subpoena was marked by the name of fraud-focused D.C. federal prosecutor’s name, according to NYT. Moreover, one other subpoena purportedly looked for correspondences with Pennsylvania lawyer Bruce Marks, who was involved in work to challenge election results.

The grand jury is looking for communications with people already named in other Trump-related subpoenas, NYT reported.

Trump and allies have claimed the 2020 election was stolen in urging donations to Save America PAC, according to ABC News. They have called for Trump supporters to give money in response to probes of Trump’s business record and other activities.

The PAC was also the subject of scrutiny from the January 6th Committee over its fundraising structure.

“Throughout the committee’s investigation, we found evidence that the Trump campaign and its surrogates misled donors as to where their funds would go and what they would be used for. So not only was there the big lie, there was the big rip-off,” Democratic California Rep. Zoe Lofgren said. “Donors deserve to know where their funds are really going. They deserve better than what President Trump and his team did.”

Representatives for Trump did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s requests for comment.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A former Utah city mayor and bishop with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been arrested on accusations he sexually abused at least three children decades ago.

Carl Matthew Johnson, 77, was arrested Wednesday and booked into the Davis County jail in northern Utah on suspicion of seven counts of sex abuse of a child, according to a probable cause statement.

Investigators say Johnson acknowledged abusing three victims in 1985, 1993 and 1996 and estimated there was a total of six victims as young as 2-years-old, according to the document. He told investigators he had struggled “controlling his sexual urges” most of his life.

Some of the alleged abuse occurred in the same years as he was mayor of West Bountiful, a city just outside of Salt Lake City that he led from 1990-1997.

The investigation is still ongoing, but so far Johnson is only booked on charges stemming from three victims. Johnson had not yet been charged as of Thursday afternoon and it was unknown if he had an attorney.

Johnson was in a “position of trust” over each victim, but investigators don't explain what that was in the probable cause document. Stephanie Dinsmore, spokesperson for Davis County Sheriff’s Office, also declined to explain.

The victims told investigators they were told not to tell anyone, and Johnson used his position to suppress disclosures, according to the probable cause statement.

A pastor, political operative and former high-ranking Atlanta city official was sentenced Thursday to 14 years in prison after a jury found her guilty of charges stemming from a long-running federal investigation into corruption at City Hall.

U.S. District Judge Steve Jones told Mitzi Bickers that the evidence showed that she was involved in “a deliberate, calculated plan to cheat” the taxpayers of Atlanta over a number of years. In addition to the prison time, he ordered Bickers to pay nearly $3 million in restitution to the city and to serve three years of supervised release once she's out.

Bickers, 56, was the first person to go to trial in the investigation into corruption during the administration of former Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. She helped Reed win election and then worked as his director of human services for several years. Prosecutors said she used her influence to funnel roughly $17 million in business to city contractors Elvin “E.R.” Mitchell Jr. and Charles P. Richards Jr. in exchange for more than $2.9 million in bribes for herself and others.

Now that the U.S. has publicly accepted that what is happening in Ukraine is a proxy war and Ukraine won’t win, the focus has moved to who will get to plunder what from Ukraine after the war.

Benjamin Norton of Multipolarista reports, “On July 4 and 5, 2022, top officials from the US, EU, Britain, Japan, and South Korea met in Switzerland for a so-called ‘Ukraine Recovery Conference.’“

A Ukraine Recovery Conference sounds good, right? I bet they recommend volunteering in elder care facilities, free housing for everyone in Ukraine having a rough time and maybe funding a free public transit system. No?

Norton continues, “[They met] to plan a series of harsh neoliberal policies to impose on post-war Ukraine, calling to cut labor laws, ‘open markets,’ drop tariffs, deregulate industries, and ‘sell state-owned enterprises to private investors.’“

In other words, they’re just repeating the normal gameplan of the U.S. Empire. Destroy an area of the world, then put in drastic and cruel capitalist policies that enrich a tiny number of people and don’t help suffering people.

This plan to pillage Ukraine didn’t start when the proxy war did this past February. New evidence shows that the U.S. and other Western countries had been planning to privatize the Ukrainian economy since at least 2018.

As murder suspect Robert Telles was holed up inside his home on Wednesday, veteran criminal defense attorney Ozzie Fumo received a call for help from Las Vegas police.

They wanted him to persuade the county official to surrender in the death of Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German.

Authorities allege that Telles, Clark County’s public administrator, fatally stabbed German last week outside the journalist’s northwest valley home.

Telles had been the focus of German’s work exposing public wrongdoing, and the investigative reporter was pursuing a potential follow-up story about Telles, who lost a re-election bid in June, in the weeks before he was killed.

Fumo, a former Nevada assemblyman who ran for district attorney and a seat on the Nevada Supreme Court, was familiar with Telles on the campaign trail.

Telles, 45, was questioned by homicide detectives for several hours Wednesday while investigators searched his home, about 6 miles from where German was found dead.

After the interrogation, police took Telles back home. He was wearing what appeared to be a white hazmat suit and flip-flops because police had confiscated his clothing. He refused to speak to reporters.

Metropolitan Police Department Capt. Dori Koren told reporters on Thursday that Telles had been returned to his home while investigators consulted with the Clark County district attorney’s office to secure an arrest warrant, “ensuring a solid case, building evidence.”

Later, police arrived in tactical gear and surrounded the home while Telles remained inside. The area was cordoned off with yellow tape.

Fumo got the call at 6:23 p.m.

A woman from Metro’s negotiation team was on the other end of the line.

“We’re outside his house,” the woman said. “We have probable cause to arrest, and he’s barricaded himself in. Will you talk to him?”

The call lasted 48 seconds.

As he made the 22-minute drive in his blue Tesla Model Y from his office on Las Vegas Boulevard to the home on Spanish Steps Lane, Fumo contemplated what he would say to the man suspected of killing a 69-year-old reporter whom Fumo had known for years.

“I was thinking supportive things,” the attorney recalled on Thursday. “‘Everything’s going to be OK.’ Whatever I could do to help him feel comfortable. I didn’t want anybody else to get hurt. I just didn’t want any more people hurt. I thought if I could de-escalate the situation by calming him down, that might be the best way to do it.”

Fumo said his wife advised him to do and say whatever Metro asked.

“Do you want me to call him?” Fumo asked the negotiator.

“No, because we’re on the phone, and we don’t want to lose that call,” the negotiator replied.

She asked him to park as close as possible and said officers would take him to Telles’ house.

But when Fumo was a few minutes from the standoff, Metro called back.

“We took him into custody without incident,” the woman said.

Fumo turned around.

“I was glad everybody was OK,” he said.

The lawyer said he did not know why police called him to help with the standoff.

Police announced the next day that Telles’ DNA was found at the scene of the fatal stabbing.

Fumo and Telles, both Democrats, had known each other for years, since Telles was a student at UNLV’s Boyd Law School and Fumo taught classes.

Telles was elected to the public administrator’s position in 2018, and he kept in touch with Fumo after taking office.

He reached out to Fumo after German’s first story about the public administrator was published.

“He was upset and sad by it,” Fumo said. “But more sad than angry. That’s why this surprised me. … He didn’t say anything about Jeff specifically. I would never have seen this coming.”

Telles last communicated with Fumo via text message in late July, after the newspaper reported about a bar complaint against Fumo that he said was ultimately dismissed. The story was not written by German.

“I’m sure plenty of people are reaching out about that lame bar complaint,” Telles told Fumo. “I’m sure you’ll beat it. I’m sorry you’re going through what you’re going through.”

Police said Telles suffered self-inflicted wounds inside his home before he was arrested. He was taken into custody in a stretcher and driven to a hospital by ambulance. Telles appeared in court Thursday with bandages on his forearms, and a judge ruled that he would be held without bail.

Fumo told the Review-Journal he would not represent Telles in the murder case.

If you think Prince Andrew is letting any grass grow under his feet in the romance department, Fergie-get about it.

The Post caught the dashing royal wining and dining his sweetheart, Ghislaine Maxwell, during an intimate lunch at Nello’s restaurant on Madison Avenue.

Sarah Ferguson’s former hubby held hands with his new love and was seen eating a meal of salad and chops.

But the dashing prince – once known as Randy Andy for his escapades with sexy film star Koo Stark – was apparently eager to keep his latest romance under wraps.

After lunch, Ghislaine – daughter of late media tycoon Robert Maxwell – exited by herself, leaving Andrew to settle the bill.

Next, Andrew walked out and immediately pulled a cell phone from his jacket.

Ghislaine was window-shopping down the street, a witness said.

When Andy spotted our photographer, Ghislaine quickly ran into a shop, occasionally peering out to see if the coast was clear.

The two eventually abandoned their plan to reunite on Madison Avenue and met up later, the witness said.

Sources say Andrew is desperate to keep a low profile in a bid to avoid scandalous stories such as those involving the flame-haired Fergie.

The Duchess of York shocked Buckingham Palace several years ago when she was captured on film, topless and having her toes sucked by Texas millionaire Johnny Bryan.

FOR Ghislaine Maxwell, daughter of disgraced media tycoon Robert Maxwell, it was an exquisite moment of triumph and redemption.

As she sat in the front row of Fashion Week’s Ralph Lauren show, all eyes were on her and the man at her side: Britain’s Prince Andrew.

As necks craned to see, as cameras flashed and motor drives whirred, the favorite child of the former New York Daily News owner smiled regally and quietly savored the attention.

Just a short time ago people spat the name Maxwell — if they spoke it at all.

Now, the public gesture of friendship by Britain’s most eligible royal was a signal to the world that the once reviled Maxwells were back. And beautiful. And 39-year-old Ghislaine is their public face.

“Ghislaine couldn’t have done in Britain what she has achieved here. Every step would have been scrutinized and criticized,” said a family friend.

“She has kept just the right profile. Being out with Prince Andrew was a startling social coup. It made everyone stand up and take notice.”

IT IS nine years since Robert Maxwell disappeared from the deck of his yacht, the Lady Ghislaine, into the inhospitable waters of the Atlantic.

He left behind a media empire in ruins, crushed by debt and pillaged by his own avarice. He had looted $600 million from the pension funds of his employees in a vain attempt to keep the empire afloat, and thousands of families would suffer as a result.

It is widely assumed that Maxwell committed suicide rather than face the inevitable consequences. An inquest called it an accident. Either way, he left his seven children to shoulder a heavy burden of ignominy and shame.

Incredibly, they have rebuilt another fortune on the smoking ruins of the first.

Robert Maxwell saw himself as Britain’s Joseph P. Kennedy, the patriarch of a dynasty that would wield financial and political power on a global scale. Like Kennedy, he expected much of his children and pushed them hard.

“He would interrogate them at the dinner table about history or geopolitics,” said a once-regular guest in at the sprawling Maxwell estate in southern England.

“He could reduce them to tears if they didn’t know an answer. He could be a cold man and the temperature in the house dropped noticeably when he was there.”

The colder he was, the more his youngest daughter tried to please him.

Maxwell even dreamed that he might one day forge an alliance with the Kennedys by marrying Ghislaine to JFK Jr. The two became close friends and remained so until Kennedy’s tragic death last year. Ghislaine has also been a guest at a number of Kennedy weddings and family events.

GHISLAINE was sent to Marlborough, one of England’s top private schools, and to Oxford. Maxwell made her director of a British soccer club and set her up with her own fiefdom, a company that supplies corporate gifts.

When in January 1991 he bought the tottering Daily News and rescued it from oblivion, she was sent to Manhattan to be the advance guard for his foray into New York society.

A few months later he was dead. Of all his children, she took his death the hardest. She was unable to accept her father’s guilt and likely suicide and insists to this day that a dark conspiracy of Mossad renegades and Sicilian contract killers took his life.

Ghislaine was already suffering emotionally. A long, passionate affair with Count Gianfranco Cicogna, the dashing scion of the aristocratic clan that owns the Ciga Hotels chain, ended painfully. She had hoped to one day be his Contessa.

In a short space of time she had lost her lover, her prospects, her share of the family fortunes and her beloved father.

“There’s a story that the Maxwell name was so detested in London that she had to walk around in a blond wig so people wouldn’t recognize her,” said a prominent New York socialite who has known Ghislaine for several years.

“She was being treated like Marie Antoinette there. She wisely realized she had to make her life in New York where her father was less well-known and people care more about what you can do than who you used to be. She was like one of those European princes who have been deposed. But she had no title — and no money!

“The most obvious way out of a jam like that is, ‘Find a rich husband, darling, and quick.'”

Ghislaine wasn’t entirely penniless. She lived off an inviolable trust immune from the family’s financial difficulties and this yielded an income of about $100,000 a year — enough to ensure that she would never starve.

After her father’s disgrace, even that caused resentment. When she was spotted flying on the supersonic Concorde to New York there were critical editorials in the British press about her lifestyle.

Ghislaine took a $2,000-a-month apartment on the Upper East Side and began working selling real estate. One thing the collapse of her father’s empire couldn’t take away from her was the rich network of wealthy and influential friends she had made in a lifetime of privilege.

She used them now.

Within a year of her father’s death she was dating immensely wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein. He provided a platform for her return to public prominence and filled the emotional vacuum in her life left by the death of her father.

EPSTEIN is an enigmatic figure. Rumors abound — including wild ones about a career in the Mossad and, contrarily, the CIA.

Some have said he was once a concert pianist. He seems to deny nothing and admits even less.

“He told me he was a spy hired by corporations to find major amounts of money which had been embezzled,” said one of Epstein’s former girlfriends, diet guru and former TV personality Nicki Haskell. “He made it sound very glamorous.”

Epstein made his fortune as a righthand man of Leslie Wexner, founder of The Limited, the retailing giant that owns Intimate Brands, Victoria’s Secret, and Bath & Body Shop.

He now runs an investment company, J. Epstein & Co., and the walls of his Madison Avenue office drip with six-figure works of art.

He is fond of expensive toys — of which Ghislaine might be termed both his favorite and most expensive.

Among his other trinkets: a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud in which he sometimes parades around Manhattan.

As well as owning one of the largest and the last great mansions of the Upper East Side, Epstein has built a $3million, 26,700-square-foot hilltop mansion in New Mexico, one of the largest homes in the entire state. For a yard, he purchased the 10,000-acre Zorro ranch once owned by the state’s former governor, Bruce King.

He shocked other New Mexicans — even the rich ones — by having supplies of New York rye and authentic bagels flown in to the private airstrip on his hacienda and by covering his bed with designer sheets that cost a reputed $600 each.

“Jeffrey is a fun-loving character, but he can be demanding and critical and sometimes eccentric,” said a friend of the couple. “He can be impatient one moment and solicitous the next.

“He’s very charismatic. I wouldn’t say Svengali, but he does get what he wants, usually. He and Leslie Wexner are very, very close.

“He is very, very rich and as much as he enjoys making it, he seems to have no problem spending it, either. He has provided Ghislaine a lot of the security and confidence she was missing when her father died and she has provided him with a lot of prestige.”

GHISLAINE’S siblings have also been busy rebuilding the family’s financial fortunes.

The source of much of their new wealth is The McKinley Group, a California company founded by Maxwell’s twin daughters, Isabel and Christine.

Named after North America’s highest mountain, the company developed a high-tech Internet search engine called Magellan. It was profitable but inevitably, after a while, started to lose customers to Yahoo.

The Maxwell sisters sold out to a another Internet search-engine company, Excite, for about $18 million. When Excite was sold last year, the value of those shares had risen 1,000 percent.

An Israeli e-mail company, CommTouch, hired Isabel as president while Christine launched another Web business, an Internet publisher named Chiliad.

Meanwhile, Maxwell’s sons, Kevin and Ian, rounded up private investors in the United States to create Telemonde, a company involved in the complex business of buying and leasing telecommunications bandwidth. The company went public last year but has suffered setbacks in its efforts to make an impression on the Nasdaq stock market.

Even so, this was not enough to prevent a social comeback — at least in Britain. The whole posse is profiled in the April Tatler; the cover line reads, “The Maxwells Are Back … and making another fortune.”

Robert Maxwell was fond of warning his children: “Confidence is like virginity. You can only lose it once.” His children, however, appear to have recovered theirs.

A top official at the U.S. Justice Department was a law partner with Hunter Biden’s attorney Chris Clark, raising serious concerns about potential conflicts of interest as the years-long federal probe into the president’s son has reportedly reached a critical stage.

Clark, a partner at New York-based firm Latham & Watkins, worked with Nicholas McQuaid on at least four different cases when he was also a partner at the practice, court records indicate.

The cases were high-stakes commercial litigation where the pair regularly defended clients facing multimillion-dollar lawsuits.

McQuaid was named acting head of the Justice Department’s criminal division on Jan 20, 2021 — the day President Biden was inaugurated.

Clark started representing Hunter Biden a month before.

Hunter Biden has been under investigation by the Department of Justice since 2018. A probe initially centered around taxes has reportedly expanded into potential money laundering and violations of foreign lobbying laws.

In 2022, Middlebrooks has been appointed to hear the lawsuit filed by former President Donald Trump against Hillary Clinton. Trump’s attorneys argue that Clinton, her campaign, former FBI Director James Comey, the DNC, and many others “orchestrated an unthinkable plot–one that shocks the conscience and is an affront to this nation’s democracy.” Trump’s lawsuit alleges that these actors hatched a plot to falsify records and manipulate data in an attempt to “cripple Trump’s bid for presidency” during the 2016 election. As of now, Middlebrooks has not recuse himself despite claims of a rather obvious conflict of interest due to being a Federal judge appointed by Hillary Clinton's husband former President Bill Clinton.

Hillary Clinton has another lawsuit on her hands.

Political advocacy group Freedom Watch filed a racketeering lawsuit Wednesday against the Clintons and their foundation for failing to produce documents under the Freedom of Information Act.

The civil suit accuses the former secretary of state of conducting a corrupt enterprise for more than 10 years by using her private emails to, quote, "arrange donations to ... The Clinton Foundation and large speaking fees ... in return for official government actions, policies, statements, and/or access to and from State, the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives or other parts of the U.S. Government, and arranging other political benefits using the leverage of her official position."

Freedom Watch's founder Larry Klayman said in a statement:

"This is the first and only hard-hitting case to address the growing email scandal. What Hillary Clinton, her husband, and their foundation have done is nothing new. It is simply part of a criminal enterprise which dates back at least 10 years, all designed to enrich themselves personally at the expense of the American people and our nation. It's time, however, that they finally be held legally accountable."

Clinton, who is expected to announce a presidential bid in the coming weeks, is also dealing with conservative group Citizens United over the recent email scandal. The group has filed two lawsuits demanding photos, videos and hotel bills of Clinton's travels.

Clinton gave more than 55,000 pages of emails from her private account to the State Department in December, which she has insisted cover any and all official business she conducted via the private email account while in office. The State Department said it plans to release the 300 emails under FOIA rules once it is done processing them - which is expected to take several months.

Judge orders Clinton Foundation racketeering case to trial

A Florida judge has set a trial date in the racketeering case against the Clinton Foundation and Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Judge Donald Middlebrooks of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida ordered the racketeering, influenced and corrupt organizations, or RICO, case to head to trial January 20, 2016.

The order, entered Friday and obtained by the Washington Examiner, came days after Larry Klayman of Freedom Watch filed a lengthy civil complaint against the Clintons and their foundation in the same court.

While the Clinton legal team could settle the case or enter a variety of motions in an effort to derail the lawsuit before the trial, the judge's swift decision means the matter could go to court before the Feb. 1 Iowa caucus and Feb. 9 New Hampshire primary.

Klayman, who has filed dozens of lawsuits against the Clintons and other prominent politicians, suggested the former first couple and their family philanthropy used their political clout to drum up foreign donations to the Clinton Foundation and lavish diplomatic favors for contributors while Hillary Clinton was secretary of state.

Klayman also asked the judge to order a "neutral forensic expert ... to take custody and control of the private email server and reconstruct and preserve the official U.S. Government records relating to the conduct of U.S. foreign policy during Defendant Secretary Clinton's term as Secretary of State."

Judge Middlebrooks has not yet ruled on Klayman's request that the court seize Hillary Clinton's server.

The court documents also state the Clinton Foundation and the former first couple must discuss the Cameras in the Courtroom pilot project, an initiative in the Southern District of Florida aimed at incorporating video recordings into civil cases.

"I am pleased that the Court has set this case for early jury trial," Klayman told the Examiner. "This is a matter of extreme national importance and before now, for decades, the Clintons have not had to answer to a jury for their alleged crimes. Now, justice will be done."

The Clinton Foundation declined a request for comment Friday.

“Anyone sitting in jail right now with all these pending charges, they’re going to be let out,” Johnson County Sheriff Peter Sopczak said. “The gates are open and they’re going to be let out onto the streets.”

Representative Windhorst listed some of the offenses that won’t involve detention before going to trial.

“So there are a whole list of violent crimes, burglary, robbery, arson, kidnapping, almost all drug offenses even drug distribution, DUI offenses, even DUI offenses that are involving a fatality, that do not qualify for detention under the Illinois Safety Act. To me, that’s going to mean a lot of individuals are committing crimes and being released immediately, if not within a couple of days,” he said.

Former National Security Advisor and retired three-star Gen. Michael Flynn shared his thoughts on the QAnon movement in an exclusive interview with The Western Journal on Friday.

Flynn expressed his belief that the origins of QAnon have links within the United States government, strongly rejecting insinuations from the establishment media that he’s connected to the conspiratorial movement in any way.

“This whole QAnon thing — I’ve been very public and outspoken about it … they want to tag me as though I’m ‘the guy,'” the former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency said.

Flynn pointed to his own military experiences in his assessment, describing instances in which the U.S government had used information warfare against terrorist organizations such as ISIS and al-Qaeda.

“One of the things that I do know about our government is our government’s ability to project, and our government’s ability to put together disinformation campaigns, psychological operations and psychological campaigns…”

“Information warfare is something our government gets involved in.”

“I raise this because… I really do believe that it [the QAnon movement] is some type of government campaign. Maybe it’s being done by … ultra-government organizations, you know, that are working on behalf of it.”

Flynn pointed to “crazy ideas” associated with the QAnon movement — usually labeled by the mainstream media as a “baseless conspiracy theory” — such as the notion that, during his presidency, Trump was “battling an entrenched bureaucracy and sex trafficking ring run by pedophiles” and currently, that Trump is still the acting, sitting President.

TWJ Deputy Managing Editor Josh Manning asked Flynn to elaborate on his theories on QAnon’s origins.

“This is me speculating, but it is also — when I speculate, I also have a level of expertise in these types of efforts,” said the former National Security Advisor, describing his extensive resume in the intelligence world.

“This is something that I can see our government — and they’re going to go crazy on this — but I can see our government, you know, somewhere, at some level, putting something like this together, but bifurcating it from the government and turning it over to another body.”

The movement’s origins stem from anonymous posts on an internet forum supposedly authored by a senior U.S government official with ‘Q’ top-secret security clearance.

Some proponents of the movement trust in the idea of a wide-ranging ‘plan’ in which their adversaries will be arrested in masse — an idea Flynn urged conservatives to reject.

“This idea that there’s some ‘plan,’ or something that’s going to happen…”

“You know, I keep telling people. The plan is ‘We the People.’ The plan is you and I,” said the retired general.

“The plan is me and guys like me and people like me getting out there to encourage people to get involved in the everyday life of this country.”

Supreme Court temporarily lets Yeshiva University block LGBTQ student club

Yeshiva University can hold off on recognizing an LGBTQ student group as an official campus club as a result of a Friday order from the Supreme Court.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who oversees New York cases, stayed a state court order that barred the Orthodox Jewish university from blocking the group.

The court, in its order, indicated it would have more to say on the topic in the future.

Four current and former students filed suit in Manhattan Supreme Court last April after the college denied multiple requests to officially register the group as a student club.

The plaintiffs argued that not allowing such a group to be recognized alongside more than 100 other student clubs was discriminatory and in violation of New York’s human rights law.

New York state judge Lynn Kotler ruled in the group’s favor in June — saying that Yeshiva is not a religious corporation according to its charter, a category exempt from the anti-discrimination state law, so must formally register the club.

Higher state courts denied Yeshiva’s appeals to temporarily not recognize the club as the case is heard on its merits, prompting the university to file its petition with SCOTUS.

“We are pleased with Justice Sotomayor’s ruling which protects our religious liberty and identity as a leading faith-based academic institution,” said Rabbi Ari Berman, president of Yeshiva University.

“But make no mistake, we will continue to strive to create an environment that welcomes all students, including those of our LGBTQ community,” said Berman — who added that the administration is in dialogue with students, faculty and Rabbis about creating an “inclusive campus” in accordance with religious values.

Mordechai Levovitz, clinical director at Jewish Queer Youth and a Yeshiva University alum, slammed the university as an “authoritative voice” and questioned the legality of the school’s decision to not recognize the group.

“There are 613 laws in the torah,” said Mordechai Levovitz, clinical director at Jewish Queer Youth and a Yeshiva University alum. “Which law does accepting a club of queer people, which law applies to that? Yeshiva is supposed to be a school that teaches Jewish law.”

“Yeshiva U is an authoritative voice,” said Levovitz. “They have declared that the recognition of queer people being able to gather, find camaraderie in each other, feel a sense of pride is a religious violation.”

“This is not about sex — this is about teens wanting to eat lunch together and talk about issues pertaining to them,” he added.

Eric Baxter, vice president and senior counsel at The Becket Fund, representing the university, said: “Yeshiva shouldn’t have been forced to go all the way to the Supreme Court to receive such a commonsense ruling in favor of its First Amendment rights.”

The Becket Fund has been involved in other high-profile religious freedom cases, including a Jewish group that sued former Gov. Andrew Cuomo over COVID-19 restrictions, and Hobby Lobby stores that opposed a mandate to provide contraceptives to employees on religious grounds, according to its website.

In that context, Grassley called for U.S. Attorney David Weiss to question what the FBI is actually investigating and whether all evidence is being reviewed. Grassley said he had asked these questions to FBI Director Christopher Wray with no response.

“Because of Director Wray’s failure to answer,” Grassley said, “Congress is unaware of whether or not the FBI has finally shared full and complete information and investigative activity with any ongoing criminal probe.” Additionally, Thibault’s partisan bias combined with the potential failure to examine all evidence could lead to Americans questioning the investigation results — causing further distrust in federal law enforcement at a time when roughly half the country, including a plurality of independents, don’t trust the Department of Justice and the FBI.

When left-wing media outlet The Washington Post reported on this investigation, it “failed to note that Thibault was a prime mover in opening it.”

“Thibault said that he ‘welcomes any investigation’ into the allegations against him,” Grassley concluded. “Well, Mr. Thibault, come on in. Sit for a transcribed interview with me and my colleagues.”
