US-European Satellite Will Make World’s First Global Freshwater Survey

July 22 2022

The Surface Water and Ocean Topography mission will make measurements of over 95% of Earth’s lakes, rivers, and reservoirs.

Water is life, but for all its importance, humanity has a surprisingly limited view of Earth’s freshwater bodies. Researchers have reliable water level measurements for only a few thousand lakes around the world, and little to no data on some of the planet’s important river systems. The upcoming Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite will fill that enormous gap. By helping to provide a better understanding of Earth’s water cycle, it will both aid in better management of water resources and expand knowledge of how climate change affects lakes, rivers, and reservoirs.

A collaboration between NASA and the French space agency Centre National d’Études Spatial (CNES), with contributions from the Canadian Space Agency and the United Kingdom Space Agency, SWOT is scheduled to launch in November from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Engineers and technicians are finishing up work on the satellite in a facility run by Thales Alenia Space in Cannes, France.

SWOT has several key tasks, including measuring the height of water bodies on Earth’s surface. Over the ocean, the satellite will be able to “see” features like eddies less than 60 miles (100 kilometers) across – smaller than those that previous sea level satellites could observe. SWOT will also measure more than 95% of Earth’s lakes larger than 15 acres (6 hectares) and rivers wider than 330 feet (100 meters) across.

A Bigger, Better Picture

SWOT will provide its game-changing data using a new instrument called the Ka-band Radar Interferometer (KaRIn), which bounces radar pulses off the water’s surface and receives the return signal with two antennas at the same time. The antennas are spaced 33 feet (10 meters) apart on a boom, enabling researchers to gather information along a roughly 75-mile-wide (120-kilometer-wide) swath of Earth’s surface – a wider path than that of the satellite’s predecessors.

The engineering required for this kind of system is tricky because such a large antenna boom requires incredible stability, and because researchers need very precise calculations to produce measurements of Earth’s ocean and freshwater bodies. “The basic idea of SWOT dates back to the late 1990s, but turning that concept into reality – all that engineering – took a huge amount of time and effort,” Pavelsky said.

Satellites already in orbit can measure water height – in the ocean, very large lakes, and very wide rivers – or the surface area of a water body. But to calculate changes in volume over time, scientists need to match up the extent and height measurements that different instruments took on different days. This makes it difficult to determine basic details, like how much water flows through the world’s rivers and how much that volume varies. “You’d think we would already know this,” said Pavelsky. “But for a lot of rivers in the world, there just aren’t a lot of these kinds of measurements.”

Rand Paul: "Senate Just Rejected My Attempt To Reaffirm The Constitution"

Senator Rand Paul warned Tuesday that the Senate “shockingly” rejected his efforts to reaffirm the Constitution as far as declarations of war go, noting that NATO does not have the authority to supersede Congress in the U.S.

Paul’s comments came after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee backed the accession of Finland, Sweden to NATO ahead of a full vote in the Senate on its expansion, the first of its kind for three decades, which could happen next week.

While other members of the committee verbally voted with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’, Paul voted a neutral “present”.

Paul proposed an amendment that would emphasise only the U.S. Congress has the right to declare war under the Constitution.

However, it was immediately REJECTED by the committee.

Paul took to Twitter to voice his displeasure:

Russia has repeatedly warned both Sweden and Finland against joining NATO, promising it will lead to further confrontation.

A New York judge on Wednesday ordered Trump’s former personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani to testify before a Georgia grand jury.

In January Fulton County Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis requested a special grand jury in her investigation into former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn Georgia’s fraudulent 2020 election results.

Fani Willis based her investigation on President Trump’s call with Georgia officials that was later doctored and leaked to the fake news outlet Washington Post. Again — Willis and her handlers are investigating a now-infamous call between former President Trump and Sec. of State Brad Raffensperger, in which Trump pressured the Georgia SOS to uncover what he insisted was fraud that would overturn Georgia’s election results.

The infamous phone call between Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger was recorded by Raffensperger and his office. Raffensperger’s team then leaked and lied about it to the far left Washington Post.

In May local news reported that a grand jury has been selected to investigate Fani Willis’s junk charges against President Trump.

China tells US to stop plundering Syria

The United States must stop siphoning oil and grain out of Syria and make up for the damage caused by its military presence on Syrian soil, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said Wednesday.

"The US must … immediately lift unilateral sanctions on Syria, stop plundering Syrian national resources and take concrete steps to compensate Syrians for the damage," Wang Wenbin told a press briefing.

The US occupation forces remain largely in control of oil and grain-rich areas in northeastern Syria, according to Wang.

Syrian state media has accused over and over again US and SDF armed groups of smuggling resources to Iraq and then siphoning them out of there.

The United States has been for years supporting SDF militias against Damascus, and the US-backed forces are currently controlling parts of the provinces of Al-Haskah, Deir Ezzor, and Raqqa, where the largest Syrian oil and gas fields are located. The actions carried out by the United States constitute state piracy with the aim of plundering Syria's oil resources.

On May 16, the US-led "international coalition" began a new repositioning process in Syria, roughly two and a half years after former President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from Syria, which he later retracted and deployed instead his oil-thirsty occupation forces in areas where oil and gas fields are found.

EU foreign policy head Josep Borrell has called on Europeans to show “strategic patience” while months worth of supposedly devastating sanctions against Russia take effect.

“The sanctions imposed by the EU and like-minded partners are already hitting Vladimir Putin and his associates hard,” Borrell declared in a blog post on Sunday, insisting “their impact on the Russian economy will only increase.”

“We need strategic patience until Russia stops its aggression and Ukraine is able to regain its full sovereignty,” he added.

The EU has passed six packages of punishing sanctions targeting Moscow, yet the bloc itself has stumbled into an increasingly dire gas shortage and a currency whose value recently dipped below that of the US dollar for the first time in 20 years.

One of the most recent sanctions seeks to cut 90% of Europe’s oil purchases from Russia by the end of 2022. Borrell acknowledged that “this rapid detoxification from Russian energy involves significant costs or a number of countries and sectors that we will have to face.” However, he insisted it was a small price to pay, warning that a Russian victory would amount to the destruction of Western democracy itself, as well as the “rules-based international order.”

The energy-related sanctions in the latest package make a notable exception for member states with “no viable alternative options” for energy, a loophole presumably met for Hungary, which has staunchly opposed an oil embargo oPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

In overturning Roe v. Wade, the court ruled that millions of citizens, not nine justices, must now decide the question of abortion.

In its decision, the court said that in 1973 "Roe abruptly ended (a) political process" of states dealing with the issue of abortion. It now has returned the matter to the states and said basically "have at it." The court did not outlaw abortion or favor any particular outcome beyond telling people to vote, vote, vote, vote.

Hundreds Of Virginia Bureaucrats Quit After Youngkin Makes Them Show Up In-Person

Over 300 Virginia bureaucrats have quit since Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin announced in May that state employees must show up to their jobs following more than two years of remote work since the onset of the COVID pandemic.

Employees from five different state agencies resigned after Youngkin’s new work policy, some specifically citing “telework options” as their reason for leaving, ABC 8 News reported.

“Unfortunately we’re not surprised by this information,” Virginia Governmental Employees Association (VGEA) lobbyist Dylan Bishop told the outlet. “We had anticipated that the shift in policy would result in an exodus of workers, which is really concerning because of the state’s recruitment and retention issues.”

On May 5, Youngkin ordered all state workers to return to in-person work by July 5 to “balance the demands of government services with the needs of our public servants.”

“The governor is excited to welcome the Commonwealth’s workforce back in person and is encouraged by their continued dedication to serving Virginians,” Rob Damschen, Youngkin’s deputy communications director said in a statement, according to ABC 8 News. “We know an office-centric environment fosters collaboration and teamwork and provides an even greater level of service for all Virginians.”

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) took the biggest hit following the governor’s order with 183 employees leaving the agency, according to public records obtained by ABC 8 News. Twenty-eight VDOT workers named “telework options” as their reason for leaving the agency. Other VDOT employees said they were quitting over compensation.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has responded to Victoria Spartz, who claimed Zelensky’s chief of staff “raises many concerns”

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko on Saturday accused US Congresswoman Victoria Spartz of attempting to bring “Russian propaganda” into American politics.

Spartz had earlier called on the US administration to develop a mechanism for tracking military assistance provided to Kiev, and expressed doubts about the reliability of President Volodymyr Zelensy’s chief of staff in an open letter to Joe Biden.

“We advise Ms. Spartz to stop trying to earn extra political capital on baseless speculation around the topic of war in our country and the grief of Ukrainians. Especially cynical are manipulations about Ukraine and its leadership from a congresswoman of Ukrainian origin,” Nikolenko wrote on Facebook.

He also called on Spartz to “stop undermining the existing mechanisms of providing US military assistance to Ukraine,” claiming that Kiev’s interaction with its American partners is completely transparent. Any “further bureaucratization and delaying the process” will only help the Kremlin, the Foreign Ministry spokesman claimed.

On July 8, in an interview with Fox News, Spartz called on Congress to establish “proper oversight” of billions of dollars in assistance provided to Ukraine. Just a few days prior to that, the Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said that “some of the foreign weapons supplied by the West to Ukraine are spreading throughout the Middle East region, and also end up on the black market.”

Russia Deployed 600 Paratroopers At Key Northeastern Syria Airport

The Russian military had deployed 600 paratroopers at al-Qamishli Airport in northeastern Syria, Russian sources revealed on July 3.

The first batch of 300 paratroops arrived at the airport, which is the main base of the Russian military in the northeastern Syria, on July 1. Two days later, a second batch of 300 paratroopers arrive at the airport. The paratroops were moved into the airport aboard several Russian Il-76 airlifters.

The deployment came amid ongoing preparations by Turkish military and its proxies to launch a new large-scale operation against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northern and northeastern Syria.

The Russia military has been bolstering its presence in al-Qamishli airport to deal with this new Turkish threat. In May, Su-34 fighter bombers and Ka-52 attack helicopters were deployed at the airport. Later in June, the airport’s defenses were straightened with several additional Pantsir-S1 air-defense systems.

While Russia is not a backer of the SDF, it is the guarantor of several de-escalation agreements with Turkey on northern and northeastern Syria.

Moscow believes that a new Turkish military operation in northern and northeastern Syria could hurt the humanitarian situation in these regions, push Kurds towards separatism and even risk a full-blown confrontation between Ankara and Damascus.

Russia has been engaging diplomatically with Turkey to prevent a new operation, so does Iran. Yet, recent statements by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan indicate that Ankara is determined to go on with military plans.

Former President Donald Trump filed an appeal over the dismissal of his lawsuit that claimed Twitter violated his First Amendment right to free speech when the platform banned him following the events of Jan. 6, 2021.

Bloomberg reports that Trump filed a notice of appeal in San Francisco federal court on Monday, saying he will take his case to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

U.S. District Judge James Donato dismissed the complaint in May, ruling that Trump had not proven that Twitter was functioning as a government censor when it banned him for violating its policy on tweets that glorify violence.

The former president had claimed that Twitter banned him at the request of Democrat lawmakers.

Scientists Studying Temperature at Which Humans Spontaneously Die With Increasing Urgency

"Wet-bulb" conditions are when heat and humidity can cause otherwise healthy humans to overheat and die. They're happening more often than ever.

Last week’s historic heatwave saw portions of the Northwest breaking all-time temperature records and gearing up for wildfire risk. The temperatures are now being attributed to an excess of 100 deaths across the region as it gears up for another week of extreme highs.

The heat can feel apocalyptic, and scientists are increasingly studying the heat and humidity conditions at which some humans suddenly die, a phenomenon that is becoming increasingly common as a result of extreme weather driven by climate change. This is perhaps best illustrated in a study published last year in Science Advances, alarmingly titled "The emergence of heat and humidity too severe for human tolerance."

Originally, conditions like this weren't expected until the mid 21st century, according to climate models. But they are actually already here. In that study, Radley Horton, Lamont Research Professor at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and co-authors surveyed weather station data from across the world, collected between 1979 and 2017, and found over 7,000 instances of so-called "wet bulb" conditions, which can lead to human deaths.
