What’s behind conspiracy theorists’ enduring fixation on the Rothschild family?

If the two things that you know about me are that: 1) I have written a book about Rothschild banking family conspiracy theories and 2) my own last name is Rothschild, you might imagine the topic has been a lifelong obsession. It’s not the case, however. When I was growing up, I knew I wasn’t related to ‘The Rothschild Family’. And nobody else assumed I was either. It was only once I got into journalism and started debunking conspiracy theories – some of which revolved around those Rothschilds – that the link started to be drawn, mostly by a certain kind of person on the internet: ‘A Rothschild debunking conspiracy theories? How stupid do they think we are?’

So I decided to dig a little deeper, and to explore why antisemitic conspiracy theories continue to drive their own special genre of myth and prejudice. My recent book, Jewish Space Lasers: the Rothschilds and 200 Years of Conspiracy Theories, is the result.

As I say, I already had some experience in the field. My previous book, The Storm Is upon Us, was about the QAnon conspiracy theory, which essentially held that ‘a group of Satan-worshiping elites who run a child sex ring are trying to control our politics and media’. Such theories depend on ideas about shadowy organisations and secret societies running things behind the scenes. These groups have had many names throughout history – from the Illuminati to the New World Order to today’s ‘deep state’ – but they all have a few things in common. Many are at least based on real organisations, such as the Bavarian Illuminati of 1776. They are said to have unimaginable power and hoard endless wealth. But, above all, the key concept is this: someone must be controlling the controllers. And that someone, as often as not, is a Jewish banking cabal – specifically the Rothschilds.

Sean Hagerty’s accent marks him as unmistakably American. But the roots of the softly spoken head of one of Britain’s fastest-growing investment companies are British: Hagerty’s mother was born in London, and his great-grandfather Sir Ninian Comper designed some of the stained-glass windows in Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament.

Today, Sir Ninian’s descendant runs the London-based European arm of the Vanguard Group, the second-biggest investment group in the world, with nearly $8 trillion of assets under management. That is roughly the equivalent of the GDP of the UK and Germany combined, and makes Vanguard one of the biggest owners of virtually every major listed company on the planet.

It has also become an increasingly large and disruptive presence in the UK’s own investment industry. Vanguard has been quietly present on the isles since 2009 – selling its funds to big pension plans and ordinary British investors through a smattering of platforms – but in 2017 it announced it would be mimicking its US approach by offering its wares directly to Brits as well.

The news that the US investment behemoth was setting up its stall in the country helped send a shiver of fear through swathes of the UK financial industry. The shares of investment managers such as Schroders, Jumper and Ashmore quivered markedly on the day it was announced, but worst affected were wealth manager platforms Hargreaves Lansdown and St James’s Place, which suddenly faced a formidable new competitor in their domestic market.

‘We don’t pay attention to other people’s stock prices,’ deadpans Hagerty, an avuncular Pennsylvanian with square black glasses and side-parted salt-and-pepper hair. ‘We always just think about what we do.’

For fans of the ‘passive’ investment style that Vanguard is best known for – so-called index funds that do nothing but track a broad financial market benchmark such as the FTSE 100 or the S&P 500, as cheaply as possible – its arrival was as thrilling as it was unnerving for its rivals.

‘For years there were very few of us in the UK advocating the use of index funds. So I remember being really excited about Vanguard’s decision to come here,’ says Robin Powell, the founder and editor of the Evidence-Based Investor. ‘The UK fund industry was even more powerful in those days than it is now, and active managers like Neil Woodford were being heavily promoted in the media, so we were crying out for disruption.’

A move into financial advice was quickly aborted, but Vanguard’s UK business remains healthy and growing. It has now amassed about $168 billion of assets from UK investors and $21 billion on its personal advice platform, also making it one of the fastest-growing wealth managers in the country. In the process it has also helped bring down the cost of investment funds across the industry – a phenomenon that some have dubbed the ‘Vanguard effect’.

40 years in prison for ex-CIA coder who leaked hacking tools to WikiLeaks

A former CIA programmer was sentenced to 40 years in prison on Thursday for leaking the US spy agency’s most valuable hacking tools to WikiLeaks.

Joshua Schulte, 35, was found guilty in 2022 of espionage and other charges in what the CIA called a “digital Pearl Harbor” — the largest data breach in the history of the intelligence agency.

“Schulte betrayed his country by committing some of the most brazen, heinous crimes of espionage in American history,” US Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement.

“He caused untold damage to our national security in his quest for revenge against the CIA for its response to Schulte’s security breaches while employed there.”

US District Judge Jesse Furman sentenced Schulte to 40 years in prison for espionage, computer hacking, contempt of court, making false statements to the FBI and child pornography.

Schulte worked for the CIA’s elite hacking unit from 2012 to 2016 when he quietly took cyber tools used to break into computer and technology systems, according to court documents.

After quitting his job, he sent them to WikiLeaks, which began publishing the classified data in March 2017.

“Schulte’s theft and disclosure immediately and profoundly damaged the CIA’s ability to collect foreign intelligence against America’s adversaries; placed CIA personnel, programs, and assets directly at risk; and cost the CIA hundreds of millions of dollars,” prosecutors said.

The leaked data included a collection of malware, viruses, trojans, and “zero day” exploits that, once leaked out, were available for use by foreign intelligence groups, hackers and cyber extortionists around the world, they said.

Schulte was an early suspect after WikiLeaks began publishing the secrets, but was quietly charged in September 2017 only with having a large cache of child pornography on his computer.

Charges related to the theft and transmission of national defense information, under the Espionage Act, were added later.

In 2020, a jury convicted him on two lesser charges of lying and contempt of court, but it was hung on the other charges.

In 2022, a new jury convicted Schulte on eight counts under the Espionage Act and one count of obstruction. He was convicted of child pornography charges last year.

The leak spurred the US government to consider tough action against WikiLeaks, which then-CIA director Mike Pompeo called a “hostile intelligence service.”

The US government then moved to indict WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on espionage charges. Assange is currently in Britain fighting extradition to the United States.

"Nonpartisan" Supreme Court watchdogs demanding conservative justices disclose more about their finances hauled in millions of dollars combined in 2022 from the largest Democratic-allied dark money network in the United States, tax forms show.

The cash transfers, which became public Wednesday upon the release of new financial disclosures, underscore how groups leading a campaign targeting Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito over trips and gifts they accepted, but did not report, rely on influential left-wing grantmakers to help keep their lights on. Several of these self-described watchdogs took heaps of cash from nonprofit organizations managed by Arabella Advisors, a consulting firm overseeing an anonymously-funded network that spent over $1 billion last year propping up liberal causes.

Washington D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb (D) is investigating Arabella Advisors and its offshoots, including New Venture Fund and Sixteen Thirty Fund, and his office issued subpoenas to the network in September for information on financial mismanagement allegations. The consultancy also manages Hopewell Fund, North Fund, and Windward Fund, which, like others in the network, sponsor little-known groups that aren't required to file their own tax forms with the IRS.

"Arabella Advisors and the dark money groups it advises specialize in cultivating pop-up front groups to make their extreme agenda sound locally-run or nonpartisan," Carrie Severino, president of the conservative Judicial Crisis Network, told the Washington Examiner. "It’s no surprise they’re behind the campaign to discredit originalist justices."

JCN, the judicial advocacy group also known as Concord Fund, is affiliated with Federalist Society co-chair Leonard Leo, a conservative activist who, along with GOP businessman Harlan Crow, could face congressional subpoenas over their ties to Thomas and Alito. Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats decided against a vote on the matter last week after Republicans, including Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), dangled the idea of an Arabella subpoena.

But Schwalb also recently opened an investigation into tax-exempt organizations linked to Leo. It came after Campaign for Accountability, a "nonpartisan watchdog" helmed by left-wing activists, alleged in an April IRS complaint that the nonprofit groups Concord Fund, Rule of Law Trust, Wellspring Committee, 85 Fund, Federalist Society, Freedom and Opportunity Fund, and Marble Freedom Trust paid excessive compensation to Leo.

Campaign for Accountability, a former Hopewell Fund project, pocketed $450,000 in 2022 from New Venture Fund, tax forms show. That donation adds to the more than $2.3 million New Venture Fund wired between 2016 and 2021 to CFA, which has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from Open Society Foundations, the vast liberal grantmaking network bankrolled by Democratic megadonor and philanthropist George Soros.

In September, CFA joined over 40 "Supreme Court watchdog and accountability organizations" in sending a letter to Chief Justice John Roberts demanding he "ensure" Thomas and Alito recuse themselves from cases purportedly tied to conservative hedge fund manager Paul Singer and the right-libertarian Koch Network.

CFA Executive Director Michelle Kuppersmith sits on the board of Fix the Court, a "transparency" Supreme Court watchdog that unwittingly leaked its donors, including New Venture Fund, to the Washington Examiner in May. Fix the Court, which was previously a project of New Venture Fund, admitted to failing to disclose lobbying after tax attorneys said in July that Fix the Court likely violated federal law.

Ukraine is currently undergoing an historic transformation that will be felt throughout the world. The globally significant progress I am referring to is agricultural land reform.

For centuries, Ukraine has been known as “the breadbasket of Europe.” This title is entirely accurate, given that Ukraine is home to around a quarter of the world’s super-fertile “chernozem” or “black soil.”

However, Ukrainians have not been able to fully capitalize on these agricultural riches during the thirty years since the country gained independence. Instead, independent Ukraine became one of only six nations globally without an agricultural land market, joining the likes of North Korea and Venezuela. Thankfully, the situation is now being transformed and Ukraine is gearing up to take its rightful place as an agricultural superpower.

The untapped potential of Ukraine’s agricultural sector is staggering. The country boasts around 42 million hectares of agricultural land. At present, 32 million hectares are cultivated annually, representing an area larger than Italy. Given the size and fertility of the country’s farmland, together with the vast scope for increased harvests and greater efficiency through ongoing modernization, it is no exaggeration to state that Ukraine can feed the world.

Ukraine is already among the top three grain exporters and a world leader in areas such as soybeans and sunflower oil. Ukrainian agricultural exports enjoy a growing profile in key global markets like China, Egypt, India, Turkey, and across the European Union.

The countries of the Middle East represent a particularly promising focus for Ukrainian agricultural exporters. This was evident during President Zelenskyy’s February 2021 visit to the United Arab Emirates, where agriculture trade featured prominently in a range of signed memorandums and agreements worth around USD 3 billion. Looking ahead, Ukraine aims to provide food security for the UAE as well as a number of other countries in the region including Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Ukraine has also demonstrated huge promise in some of the world’s fastest-growing agricultural niche markets. Today, Ukraine is among the top three exporters of organic products to the EU. We plan to achieve similar organic market penetration in the United States and across Asia. Organic products can serve as one of the engines driving the future development of Ukraine’s agricultural sector.

These ambitious goals are entirely realistic but they require a sensible and modern approach to the evolution of Ukraine’s agricultural industry. Since achieving independence in 1991, Ukraine has never established a functioning agricultural land market. Instead, an official moratorium on the sale of agricultural land was introduced in 2001, when I was just thirteen years old.

I grew up in a farming family in rural Ukraine where life revolved around agriculture. My parents and everyone else in the community who rented out land soon came to the conclusion that the moratorium was a way of stealing land. However, there were no legal mechanisms available to us that could protect against the arbitrariness of corrupt officials.

When I became head of the state agency responsible for the use of land resources, I carried out an inventory of state-owned lands. At least five million hectares had simply disappeared since the start of the moratorium. Unscrupulous officials had handed this land over to developers in exchange for illicit payments. This is how the shadow land market of recent decades made Ukrainians poorer while generating obscene wealth for a small group of corrupt officials and their associates.

Many in the agricultural sector fought for years to end the moratorium. In March 2020, the Ukrainian parliament finally voted for agricultural land reform and canceled the moratorium. Thanks to this historic decision, seven million Ukrainian landowners received the right to use their land at their own discretion.

This breakthrough is just the beginning. Due to public fears and concerns fueled by those who benefited most from the moratorium, the reform bill of spring 2020 was highly conservative. With time, as people begin to see the advantages of a functioning agricultural land market and develop a sense of trust towards the new rules and regulations of the market, further changes will be introduced. Eventually, Ukrainians will be invited to take part in a national referendum on the issue of allowing foreign citizens to purchase agricultural land.

Safeguards will remain in place to make sure the reforms bring benefits to ordinary Ukrainians rather than the country’s billionaire class. These measures include limits on the amount of land any one individual can purchase.

In parallel to the emergence of an agricultural land market, we are also developing instruments to provide affordable financing for Ukrainian agribusinesses. In cooperation with the National Bank of Ukraine, farmers will be able to access loans at competitive rates to finance upgrades in machinery along with the purchase of quality seed and fertilizer. The Ukrainian parliament is currently working on an Agricultural Loan Partial Guarantee Fund, which will provide assistance to small and medium-sized farms.

At every stage of land reform implementation, we are guided by what we term as the 3D formula: deregulation, de-shadowing, and digitization. We aim to collect information about all the country’s natural resources, including agricultural land, via satellite. This will be made available online as part of our commitment to transparency and digitization.

Recently adopted legislation governing concessions and public-private partnerships will help to upgrade Ukraine’s infrastructure and boost the country’s ability to transport larger volumes of crops and value-added agricultural produce to global markets. Meanwhile, river traffic reforms passed in late 2020 will enable Ukraine’s Dnipro River to regain its historic role as one of Europe’s great waterways and serve as an increasingly important route for agricultural exports.

Last year’s agricultural land reform was a watershed moment in modern Ukrainian history, but experience elsewhere in the region indicates that the development of the market will continue for many years to come. In neighboring Poland, for example, land reform has been underway for the past 15 years. The process will evolve similarly in Ukraine, taking into account the country’s changing social and economic circumstances.

At every stage of this process, we will work to make sure Ukrainians are protected from the greed on tycoons and corrupt officials. The government will never lose sight of the central idea that Ukraine’s farmlands are the nation’s greatest asset. In the years ahead, this will leave Ukraine well placed to assume an ever-greater role in global food security. Ukrainians will finally reap the benefits of the country’s legendary fertility, and the whole world will come to know Ukraine as a land of unrivaled agricultural riches.

Four days after a deadly drone attack on U.S. troops in Jordan, plans are leaking out about the expected American response, sending many of the intended targets scrambling for cover.

“U.S. officials have confirmed to CBS News that plans have been approved for a series of strikes over a number of days against targets — including Iranian personnel and facilities — inside Iraq and Syria, the news outlet reported on Thursday.

As each day passes since Sgt. William J. Rivers, Sgt. Kennedy L. Saunders and Sgt. Breonna A. Moffett were killed and more than 40 other soldier wounded at Tower 22 in Jordan, there’s been more time for potential targets to prepare.

A “state of maximum alert has continued since the day before yesterday in all Iranian militias positions in the Syrian desert and Deir Ezzor, specifically in positions in Al-Bokamal, Al-Mazarea area in Al-Mayadeen and Palmyra countryside area, which includes forces from the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on Thursday.

The leaders of the pro-Iranian groups “took measures to reduce human losses in the event of the expected American targeting of their positions in Syria, as they sent their leaders to the governorates of Damascus and Homs,” SOHR reported. They “also informed the leadership of the Iranian militias in Syria… to stay at home and maintain contact with the leaders of the groups, while It was content with guarding the sites, in anticipation of expected American strikes in the coming hours, amid great confusion in its ranks.”

Following statements from the Iraq-based, Iranian-backed Khataib Hezbollah militant group about a pause in attacks on U.S. forces, the leadership of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) “instructed its fighting groups in Syria, specifically in Deir Ezzor to stop their military activities against American bases in Syria,” SOHR reported.

Against this backdrop, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was asked Thursday whether the U.S. is “telegraphing” how it will hit back.

“In terms of telegraphing about strikes and whether or not people leave or would have left, you know, I won't speculate on any of that,” Austin told reporters, including from The War Zone, Thursday morning. “I will just tell you that we will have a multi-tiered response, and we have the ability to respond a number of times, depending on what the situation is.”

Austin also fielded a question about why, after more than 160 attacks by Iranian proxies against American troops in Iraq and Syria, the U.S. waited until its service members were killed to escalate a response.

He pointed out that there have been a number of U.S. strikes against Iranian proxy targets in Iraq and Syria, the aftermath of one them you can see in this video below.

Yesterday, a reporter standing outside the Senate chamber told me that after four months of secrecy, The Firm™️ plans to release the text of the $106 billion supplemental aid/border-security package — possibly as soon as today.

Wasting no time, she then asked, “If you get the bill by tomorrow, will you be ready to vote on it by Tuesday?”

The words “hell no” escaped my mouth before I could stop them. Those are strong words where I come from. (Sorry, Mom.)

The reporter immediately understood that my frustration was not directed at her. Rather, it was directed at theLaw Firm of Schumer & McConnell(The Firm™️), which isperpetually trying to normalize a corrupt approach to legislating=, in which The Firm™️:

Spends months drafting legislation in complete secrecy

Aggressively markets that legislation based not on its details and practical implications (good and bad), but only on its broadest, least-controversial objectives

Lets members see bill text for the first time only a few days•= (sometimes a few hours) before an arbitrary deadline== imposed by The Firm™️ itself, always with a contrived sense of urgency

Forces a voteon the legislation on or before that deadline, denying senators any real opportunity to read, digest, and debate the measure on its merits, much less introduce, consider, and vote on amendments to fix any perceived problems with the bill or otherwise improve it.

Whenever The Firm™️ engages in this practice,it largely excludes nearly every senator from the constitutionally prescribed processin which all senators are supposed to participate. By so doing, The Firm™️ effectively disenfranchises hundreds of millions of Americans — at least for purposes relevant to the legislation at hand — and that’s tragic. It’s also un-American, uncivil, uncollegial, and really uncool.

So why does The Firm™️ do it?

Every time The Firm™️ utilizes this approach and the bill passes — and it nearly always does —The Firm™️ becomes more powerful.

The high success rate is largely attributable to the fact that The Firm™️ has become very adept at (a)enlisting the help of the (freakishly cooperative) corporate media, (b) exerting peer pressure in a way that makes what you experienced in middle school look mild by comparison, and (c) rewarding those who consistently vote with The Firm™️ with various privileges that The Firm™️ is uniquely capable of offering, such as committee assignments, help with campaign fundraising, and a whole host of other widely coveted things that The Firm™️ is free to distribute in any manner it pleases.

It’s through this process that The Firm™️ passesmost major spending legislation. And it’s through this process that The Firm™️ likely intends to pass the still-secret, $106 billion supplemental aid/border-security package, which The Firm™️ has spent four months negotiating with the luxury of obsessing over every sentence, word, period, and comma.

I still don’t know exactly what’s in this bill, although I have serious concerns with it based on the few details The Firm™️ has been willing to share.But under no circumstances should this bill— which would fund military operations in three distant parts of the world and make massive, permanent changes to immigration law —be passed next week.

Nor should it be passed until we have had adequate time to read the bill, discuss it with constituents, debate it, offer amendments, and vote on those amendments.

There’s no universe in which those things will happen by next week.

Depending on how long it is and the complexity of its provisions, theminimum period of timewe should devote to this bill after it’s releasedshould be measured in weeks or months, not days or hours.

The Royal Navy is set to test its first nuclear missile since a failed launch in 2016.

The £4 billion HMS Vanguard, which recently underwent a £500 million upgrade that took three years longer than planned, will carry out the launch for its final test to re-enter service as part of the UK’s nuclear deterrent fleet. It is one of only four nuclear submarines in the Royal Navy.

The 60-tonne missile will be fired from 56 miles off the US east coast in the coming days. It will be aimed at an area in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean between Brazil and West Africa, some 3,700 miles from the launch site.

The US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency issued a “hazardous operations” warning to ships in the wider region to avoid the intended target area. It has also plotted areas around the target area where debris is expected to fall. The warning has been in force since 9pm on 30 January and will remain in place until 4am on 4 February.

The last time a Trident nuclear-capable warhead was tested by the Royal Navy, there was a serious malfunction in the system and the missile flew in the wrong direction. It has been nearly 12 years since the UK has carried out a successful test.

HMS Vengeance fired an unarmed Trident II DB ballistic missile in 2016 at a remote position in the southern Atlantic off the coast of West Africa - but it ended up heading in the opposite direction. After flying over the US, the warhead self-destructed in the air.

Defence sources told The Guardian at the time that the missile had veered off-course due to the relay of incorrect information, as opposed to the projectile itself being faulty.

It was revealed last year that an investigation had been launched after workers on the HMS Vanguard glued broken bolts back together in a nuclear reactor chamber.

The repairs to vital cooling pipes were only discovered when one bolt fell off during cheks aboard the submarine.

It led to Ben Wallace, the then defence secretary, holding a phone call with the chief executive of Babcock, the defence contractor which had glued the bolt back on, demanding greater transparency.

The 30-year-old, 16,000-tonne submarine has been undergoing a refit in Plymouth for seven years.

It was pictured sailing from Port Canavarel in Florida on Tuesday morning, according to The Sun.

Japan's SLIM moon lander snaps final photos before going dormant during lunar night

Japan's historic SLIM moon lander has powered down ahead of a likely mission-ending cold lunar nighttime — but not before grabbing some final images and loads of science data.

SLIM, short for "Smart Lander for Investigating Moon," nailed its precision touchdown on the rim of Shioli crater on Jan. 19, despite engine troubles that saw it land nose-down. As a result, the spacecraft's solar cells face westward and are unable to receive the expected levels of sunlight, initially cutting operations on the lunar surface very short. But SLIM triumphantly reawakened nearly 10 days after landing, as the sun finally shone on its panels.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), which operates SLIM, has spent recent days scanning the nearby lunar surface with the spacecraft's Multi-Band Camera (MBC) to learn about its composition.

MBC is designed to scope out olivine and other minerals through analyzing the light signatures, or spectra, of reflected sunlight, according to the nonprofit Planetary Society.

JAXA's SLIM account on X, formerly Twitter, posted a final image taken by SLIM's navigation camera on Jan. 31 Japan time, while stating that the agency confirmed the spacecraft had entered a dormant state as expected.

JAXA will need to wait out the roughly 14.5-Earth-day-long lunar nighttime and then wait for favorable lighting and temperature conditions later in the next lunar daytime (which starts around Feb. 15) before SLIM can potentially be revived once more. For the probe to awake again, however, its electronics must hold up in the face of equatorial lunar nighttime temperatures of around minus 208 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 130 degrees Celsius).

But whether or not SLIM wakes up, the spacecraft has hit its full and extended mission goals by achieving a precision landing, deploying a pair of small rovers and demonstrating their interoperability, and obtaining a wealth of science data.

SLIM's X account also posted labeled images of targets of MBC's spectroscopic imaging, showing the various rocks and regolith that are being studied.

"Based on the large amount of data we have obtained, we are proceeding with analyses to identify rocks and estimate the chemical composition of minerals, which will help solve the mystery of the origin of the moon," a Google machine translation of a Feb. 1 JAXA statement read.

"We will announce scientific results as soon as they are obtained," the statement added.

Four asteroids will zoom past Earth on Friday — including one space rock as big as a skyscraper that will pass within 1.7 million miles of our planet, scientists say.

Don't worry: There's no chance of the big one hitting us, since it will pass seven times the distance from Earth to the moon.

NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies estimates the biggest asteroid headed our way is between 690 feet and 1,575 feet across. That means the asteroid could be similar in size to New York City's Empire State Building or Chicago's Willis Tower.

Discovered in 2008, the asteroid is designated as 2008 OS7. It won't be back our way again until 2032, but it will be a much more distant encounter, staying 45 million miles away.

The harmless flyby is one of several encounters this week. Three much smaller asteroids also will harmlessly buzz Earth on Friday, no more than tens of yards across, with another two on Saturday. On Sunday, an asteroid roughly half the size of 2008 0S7 will swing by, staying 4.5 million miles away.

NASA said Thursday that this January, 34,151 near-Earth asteroids have been detected - including 50 space rocks found that measured wider than one kilometer.

NASA said there have been 107 near-Earth asteroids that passed closer to the moon in the past 365 days - including seven in the last 30 days.

Last month, a small asteroid entered Earth's atmosphere and burned up as it hurtled through the skies above eastern Germany.

Last June, an astronomical observatory captured images of an asteroid flying "very close" to Earth and created a time-lapse of the event, showing the asteroid traveling at over 2,000 miles per hour.

NASA is also monitoring an asteroid that could collide with Earth on Valentine's Day in 2046. But the European Space Agency estimates that the asteroid has just a 1 in 607 chance of impacting our planet.

The verdict in former President Donald Trump’s civil fraud trial in Manhattan that could see him banned for life from doing business in New York has been delayed until mid-February, according to a court spokesperson.

Justice Arthur Engoron said during the trial’s closing arguments on Jan. 11 that he hoped to make his final decision by Jan. 31 in a much-anticipated verdict that could, in addition to hitting the former president with a lifetime business ban, see him fined $370 million.

After the tentative Jan. 31 deadline came and went without a verdict, the spokesperson for the New York State Office of Court Administration, Alfred Baker, said that the judge is now expected to deliver his decision in early to mid-February. “That’s the working plan now,” Mr. Baker told The Epoch Times in an emailed statement on Feb. 1. The spokesperson added that the new timeline for a verdict is a “rough estimate” that could still change, and that the verdict would be a written decision, with no news conference.

Monitor’s Report

While it’s unclear why Justice Engoron is taking more time to deliver the verdict, reports suggest that it could have something to do with a 12-page letter issued by a court-appointed monitor claiming that parts of President Trump’s financial disclosure appeared incomplete or inconsistent.

Attorneys for President Trump, who maintains his innocence and has called the case a political witch hunt, have disputed the monitor’s characterization of the financial disclosures.

The letter from the monitor, former judge Barbara Jones, pointed out errors on seven disclosure forms, three inconsistencies, and five clerical errors.

President Trump’s attorneys have said the issues flagged by Ms. Jones are immaterial amid the thousands of pages of financial data she has received, which include Trump Organization financial disclosures to third parties, documents related to transactions, bank statements, and all manner of paperwork related to taxes.

Trump attorney Clifford Robert alleged in a letter to Justice Engoron that Ms. Jones’s report, which was issued just days before the expected Jan. 31 verdict, had two basic objectives: one to ensure that the monitor continues to receive “exorbitant” fees (over $2.6 million and counting), and the other to justify continued oversight of President Trump’s business empire.

Mr. Robert also questioned the monitor’s competency, alleging “numerous factual inaccuracies” in her report, which he characterized as “misleading and disingenuous.” He argued that the errors cited by the monitor have been blown out of proportion and that 'every item she identified had been fully resolved.

“The Monitor now twists immaterial accounting items into a narrative favoring her continued appointment, and thereby the continued receipt of millions of dollars in excessive fees,” Mr. Robert argued. Ms. Jones did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Trump attorney’s claims.

X-ray image of universe reveals almost 1 million high-energy objects: 'These are mind-blowing numbers'

The first data released to the public from the eROSITA sky survey comprises an X-ray view of half the sky over Earth, encompassing almost a million high-energy cosmic sources, including over 700,000 supermassive black holes.

This catalog, dubbed the "eROSITA All-Sky Survey Catalogue (eRASS1)" was published on Thursday (Feb. 1). It constitutes the largest-ever catalog of the universe's most powerful sources of energy, like exploding massive stars and black hole-powered active galactic nuclei that shine brightly in X-rays. The release also details the largest known structures in the universe — cosmic web filaments of hot gas that connect galaxies in clusters.

The results show that, in just half a year of operations beginning after launch on July 13, 2019, eROSITA has managed to discover more high-energy X-ray sources than has been found in six decades of examining the sky.

Considered a major milestone in the 60 or so years of X-ray astronomy, eRASS1 could help answer some of cosmology's biggest questions: How did the universe evolve, and why is the very fabric of space expanding at an accelerating rate?

Accompanying the eRASS1 data are almost 50 scientific papers published across a range of topics, adding to an existing 200 papers already written using data from the eROSITA telescope.

The main aim of eROSITA is to use clusters of galaxies to observe how dark energy accelerates the expansion of the universe; these 250 or so papers, however, demonstrate the extent to which the instrument and its data have gone beyond this goal.

These papers include the discovery of over 1,000 superclusters of galaxies, the revelation of two quasi-periodic erupting black holes, and the determination of the impact that stars' X-ray radiation has on water and atmosphere retention of planets that orbit them.

"The scientific breadth and impact of the survey is quite overwhelming; it's hard to put into a few words," spokesperson for the German eROSITA consortium, Mara Salvato, said in a statement. "But the papers published by the team will speak for themselves."

The eRASS1 data consists of eROSITA telescope observations conducted from Dec. 12, 2019, to June 11, 2020. from across half the sky over Earth. During this period, the space telescope detected around 170 million individual particles of X-ray light or "photons."

Processing these photons revealed 900,000 X-ray sources, of which 700,000 are feeding supermassive black holes that power quasars at the hearts of active galactic nuclei, regions in the centers of galaxies so bright they can outshine the combined light of every star in those galaxies themselves.

Also seen in the eRASS1 are 180,000 X-ray-emitting stars in the Milky Way, 12,000 clusters of galaxies and even exotic classes of X-ray sources like binary stars, supernova remnants, pulsars and other such objects.

"These are mind-blowing numbers for X-ray astronomy," Andrea Merloni, eROSITA principal investigator and first author of the eROSITA catalog paper, said in a statement. "We've detected more sources in 6 months than the big flagship missions XMM-Newton and Chandra have done in nearly 25 years of operation."

Along with the release, the eROSITA Consortium has also made available the software needed to analyze data from the X-ray telescope as well as catalogs that go beyond just X-ray data.

"We've made a huge effort to release high-quality data and software," eROSITA Operations team leader, Iriam Ramos-Ceja, said. "We hope this will broaden the base of scientists worldwide working with high-energy data and help push the frontiers of X-ray astronomy."

Congressional letter asks White House to reverse MSR spending cuts

More than 40 members of Congress from California have asked the White House to reverse cuts NASA has imposed on the Mars Sample Return (MSR) program, warning of job losses and a “decade of lost science.”

The Feb. 1 letter to Shalanda Young, director of the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, marks an escalation of an earlier request by many of the same members in November to NASA Administrator Bill Nelson to undo a slowdown in spending in MSR prompted by uncertainty in fiscal year 2024 appropriations.

The letter was led by Reps. Judy Chu (D-Calif.) and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), with 41 other members of California’s congressional delegation signing it. The lead center for MSR, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is in California.

NASA officials said in November that it would “start ramping back on activities” related to MSR because of differences in spending bills. A House appropriations bill offers the agency’s full request of $949.3 million for MSR, but its Senate counterpart includes only $300 million.

NASA, like the rest of the federal government, is operating under a continuing resolution (CR) that funds the agency at 2023 levels, which for MSR is $822.3 million. NASA said the reduction in MSR spending was necessary because of concerns that, if the Senate bill is enacted, MSR could run out of 2024 funding if it spent at the higher 2023 rate for several months.

In the letter, the members of Congress rejected that argument. “This short-sighted and misguided decision will cost hundreds of jobs and a decade of lost science, and it flies in the face of Congressional authority,” they wrote.

Congress has yet to finalize a full-year 2024 spending package, but have made progress in recent weeks, such as providing allocations to the 12 appropriations subcommittees so they know how much money is available to them. The CR that funds NASA runs through March 8.

The letter hints at progress on resolving the difference between the House and Senate funding levels for MSR. “While we are extremely concerned that the Senate appropriations bill for Commerce, Justice, and Science has proposed just $300 million for the program in FY2024, House Appropriations Committee leadership continue to work closely with their colleagues in the Senate on a compromise position,” it states.

If the current reductions are not reversed, the letter warns, “this decision would ensure that JPL will not be able to meet the next launch window and will force the cancellation of billions of dollars in contracts as well as the termination of hundreds of highly skilled employees.”

The reductions have already had effects at JPL. The center laid off 100 contractors in early January, most of whom were involved on MSR. JPL cited uncertainty about the budget for 2024 as a key reason for the layoffs and other cost-cutting efforts.

“We got direction from NASA to plan for the lower level and we’re doing that systematically,” Laurie Leshin, director of JPL, said in a Jan. 8 interview. “So, the first thing to happen is to look at where we’re using on-site contractors on MSR, but other places as well, where JPLers could backfill for that.” Those layoffs could extend to full-time staff, she added, if MSR funding ended up closer to the figure in the Senate bill.

An added degree of uncertainty is the ongoing agency reassessment of the overall MSR architecture, prompted by an independent review that found the current approach to MSR is behind schedule and over budget. That effort is scheduled to be complete in March.

“It is our understanding that the modified mission architecture would simplify the program and reduce annual costs, thereby addressing the concerns expressed about MSR in the FY2024 Senate appropriations bill,” the letter states. NASA has not disclosed publicly any details about any potential alternative mission architectures.

Letitia James Wields New Weapon in Demand to Ban Trump for Life From New York Deals

The state attorney general provided a judge with a new legal precedent related to the case of former pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli

Wielding a newfound legal precedent that could bolster her case against former President Donald Trump, New York Attorney General Letitia James on Tuesday renewed her call for the former president to be banned for life from doing business in New York.

In a letter to New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron, who is presiding over President Trump’s civil fraud trial and is expected to issue a ruling by the end of January, Ms. James’ assistant, Colleen Faherty, provided a “notice of supplemental authority” meant to encourage the judge to ban President Trump from ever doing business in New York.

A notice of supplemental authority is a document filed by a party in a legal case—in this instance provided by Ms. James’ office in context of the case against President Trump—to draw the court’s attention to new legal authorities that have arisen that may impact the case.

“In its appellate review, the Second Circuit unanimously affirmed in full the district court’s order enjoining Martin Shkreli from participation in the pharmaceutical industry for life and ordering him to disgorge $64.6 million,” Ms. Faherty wrote in the letter, referring to a verdict in an unrelated case against Mr. Shkreli, which stems from an antitrust lawsuit over his efforts to thwart competition when he hiked the price of a drug overnight by over 4,000 percent some years ago.

Ms. Faherty wrote that the court’s decision to impose a lifetime ban on Mr. Shkreli should serve as “case law support” for the punishment Ms. James wants Justice Engoron to apply to the former president. Ms. James, a Democrat, has requested a broad range of penalties against President Trump, including a $370 million disgorgement and a permanent ban on his doing business in New York state and with any New York-based financial institution.

President Trump has called the case a “political witch hunt.”

With her assistant’s letter to Justice Engoron, Ms. James is now arguing that the decision in the Shkreli case supports her call to impose the Trump business ban. The Trial

The trial, which began on Oct. 2, 2023, and concluded on Jan. 11, 2024, centers on allegations that the former president and his company, The Trump Organization, defrauded banks, insurers, and others by allegedly overvaluing his assets and exaggerating his net worth in documents used in deals and to secure loans.

President Trump and his sons said in testimony during the trial that no bank was victimized by the stated asset valuations and that lenders—including Deutsche Bank—made considerable amounts of money in interest by extending the loans. Deutsche Bank is the lender that provided hundreds of millions of dollars in loans to President Trump for properties in Miami, Chicago, and Washington.

‘Perfect’ Financial Statements

In a courtroom speech during closing arguments on Jan. 11, President Trump insisted that the financial statements he provided to banks were “perfect” and the financial institutions “got all their money back.” “The banks are happy as can be,” he said. President Trump’s attorneys argued that Ms. James was using a consumer fraud statute in an unprecedented way in a bid to confiscate the former president’s property.

“The attorney general wants you to turn standard loan transactions into fraud,” defense attorney Chris Kise told the judge. “It’s just a substitution of the attorney general’s political judgment for that of sophisticated financial professionals conducting risk analysis.”

Even before the trial started, Justice Engoron had also ordered the immediate cancellation of President Trump’s business certificates at the dissolution of his LLCs before the trial, but the order was paused by an appeals court for at least the duration of the trial after the defense argued it would upend hundreds of Trump Organization employees’ livelihoods overnight.

The former president has denied any wrongdoing and has claimed that the case is a politically motivated plot to undermine his 2024 White House run.

Blue Origin touts capabilities of Blue Ring transfer vehicle

Blue Origin is highlighting the capabilities of an orbital transfer vehicle design it announced last year, including the ability of the spacecraft to serve as a fuel depot.

The company publicly announced last October its Blue Ring vehicle, which it described as providing a wide array of “in-space logistics and delivery” services from Earth orbit to cislunar space and beyond. The company had been hinting about development of a space tug for at least a year before the announcement.

That announcement provided few details about the technical capabilities of Blue Ring, but a company executive said there has been strong interest in the vehicle. “We’re bringing Blue Ring to market to do a lot of the missions that are starting to emerge from national security, civil and eventually commercial,” said Lars Hoffman, vice president of national security sales at Blue Origin, in a presentation at the SpaceCom conference here Feb. 1.

Blue Ring, he said, has 12 docking ports, each able to accommodate payloads weighing up to 500 kilograms. A top deck on the spacecraft can carry payloads weighing up to two and a half tons. The spacecraft offers 3,000 meters per second of delta V, or change in velocity, to maneuver to different orbits.

The “core mission” of Blue Ring is to deploy satellites in their desired orbits, but the spacecraft can also be used as a bus for hosted payloads. “We can serve as a very capable bus,” Hoffman said, with a design life of three to five years initially.

The ports on Blue Ring could be used to incorporate additional capabilities. One example he gave is robotic arms to support in-space servicing. “We absolutely see that as an extended capability.”

He added that Blue Ring is both refuelable and able to refuel other spacecraft, although he did not disclose the propellants the vehicle uses. “It can act as a refueling depot, if you will, where spacecraft can come up and plug in and fuel, or we can fly to a larger spacecraft and be the refueler of that spacecraft,” he said. “It’s quite possible for a Blue Ring to refuel a Blue Ring.”

“The flexibility of the vehicle is what really is its strength,” he argued. “It really is a multipurpose vehicle, and that’s the way we want to offer it.”

Blue Origin has not publicly disclosed any customers for Blue Ring or when the first vehicle will launch, but Hoffman said the company has been in talks with potential users, including during the conference. “We’d like to have more detailed discussions with potential customers. We had a lot at the conference this week.”

Blue Ring is the core of a new business unit at Blue Origin called In-Space Systems. The company, though, remains best known for its New Shepard suborbital vehicle and its New Glenn orbital launch vehicle under development.

Hoffman said the company continues to work towards a first launch of New Glenn later this year, but did not offer a more specific timeframe. Development of Launch Complex 36, which will host New Glenn launches at Cape Canaveral, is complete, he noted, and the company is working on ground tests of New Glenn hardware.

The company is also ramping up production of its BE-4 engines used both on New Glenn and United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan Centaur. Those engines “worked as advertised” on Vulcan’s inaugural launch Jan. 8, he said.

To help the company speed up production of BE-4 at a factory in Huntsville, Alabama, the company is using Marshall Space Flight Center’s Test Stand 4670, previously used to test engines for the Saturn 5 and Space Shuttle. The first BE-4 test from that stand took place Feb. 1, the company announced on social media. “That is going to help accelerate our delivery of those engines,” Hoffman said.

He also said the company will increase the flight rate of New Shepard. That vehicle performed a payload-only flight in December, the first since a launch mishap more than 15 months earlier. A crewed flight, the first since August 2022, will take place “very soon,” he said, but was not more specific.

Blue Origin has not disclosed how many New Shepard flights it plans for this year. “We are definitely getting back on track this year with New Shepard,” he said. “We want to get on a nice pace or rhythm here where we’re launching regularly, mostly astronaut flights but there will be payload flights mixed in there as well.”

He also echoed comments made by the company’s founder, Jeff Bezos, in December about speeding up the pace of activity at Blue Origin. “Blue gets dinged for moving slowly. I will say our pace is going to accelerate going forward,” he said. “But, taking that extra time up front is what leads to success on the first try.”

The Russian president condemned Kiev’s forces for firing at ambulances in Donetsk

The Armed Forces of Ukraine have turned into a terrorist organization that intentionally attacks ambulances, Russian President Vladimir Putin said while speaking at the ‘Everything for Victory’ forum in Tula on Friday.

He was commenting on attacks carried out by the Ukrainian military on residential areas of Russian cities in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), which have led to a number of civilian casualties.

In one such attack on January 20, a paramedic working in the city of Gorlovka was wounded while trying to provide assistance to victims following a previous round of shelling. On January 12, another paramedic was also killed during a Ukrainian attack on an ambulance brigade in the same city.

”What is called the Armed Forces of Ukraine has turned into a terrorist organization that attacks ambulances,”Putin said.

The president recalled a story he heard last year about how Russian forces intercepted communications between two Ukrainian tank operators who were trying to enter Donetsk. One of the servicemen had just killed a man who had stepped out of his house, Putin said, when the other officer asked him “Why did you do that? He was just some guy wearing a tracksuit. He had a family, you can hear his children running around in the house.” The response, according to Putin, was“They’re all terrorists here.”

“What is this if not neo-Nazism?That’s not to mention the rounds of applause for actual SS officers in the Canadian parliament and the blatant attacks on medical workers and ambulance vehicles,” added the president.

Russia knows of the tremendous strain put on medical personnel working in the territory of the DPR and other regions, he added, vowing to continue support for them. Work would be done to provide hazard pay to ambulance drivers, the president said.

Earlier this week, Putin claimed there is a need to create a larger “demilitarized zone” in Ukraine that would ensure that peaceful Russian cities would no longer be targeted by Kiev’s foreign-made, long-range weapons.

Startups call for streamlined US regulations for emerging space capabilities

The United States risks taking a backseat in emerging space capabilities if regulations fail to catch up to industry progress, according to executives speaking here at the SpaceCom conference.

Federal agencies are taking great strides to modernize and streamline satellite licensing rules, CEOs of on-orbit refueling startup Orbit Fab and orbital surveillance venture True Anomaly said on a panel Jan. 31.

For instance, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration now processes commercial remote sensing licenses in weeks instead of months.

But more needs to be done to support nascent space businesses, said Daniel Faber and Even Rogers, who lead Orbit Fab and True Anomaly, respectively.

Orbit Fab has not had a bad experience with regulators so far for enabling its three test missions to date, Faber said, “but then we haven’t tried to execute a full rendezvous, [proximity operations] and docking maneuver yet.

“But we’re looking at a situation where a Swiss company builds a spacecraft in the U.K. and wants to dock with a U.S. spacecraft,” Faber continued, which is running up against U.S. export restrictions under ITAR, or International Traffic and Arms Regulations.

“There’s an exception in the ITAR rules for collaborative docking for NASA’s interface because at the time that was written that was the only one that they could imagine, he said. “That was 20 years ago, so these kinds of things need to be reviewed.”

Proximity operations are part of a foundation that would enable space business in addition to on-orbit refueling, according to Faber, who said U.S. companies will be held back if regulations prevent them from cooperating with the rest of the world.

“There are people pushing business models for recycling and reuse of equipment” in space, he said, “and all these things are going to come and they’ve got to be enabled, or they’re going to happen outside the U.S.”

A speedy and modernized licensing regime is also critical for giving the United States capabilities to tackle emerging space threats, True Anomaly’s Rogers said on the same panel.

It is getting easier to hide capabilities in orbit that could pose threats to the United States and its allies, Rogers warned.

He called for a regime that can quickly license rendezvous and proximity satellites for taking precise high-resolution imagery of orbital objects — such as the spacecraft True Anomaly is plotting — to improve the integrity of space domain awareness efforts. The blurred lines between commercial and defense applications for these capabilities are complicating these efforts, Rogers noted.

Meanwhile, Faber hopes voluntarily publishing flight paths and exit plans in case something goes wrong during a rendezvous and docking mission will help smooth the way with regulators.

“And we want to be getting third parties to be monitoring that,” he said, “and in fact we’ll pay third parties to monitor that just to set a good precedent.”

The Federal Communications Commission released a draft Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) Jan. 25 to set up a licensing framework for in-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing activities.

If the NPRM passes an FCC vote Feb. 15, it will enter a public comment period lasting 45 days after publication in the Federal Register.

France admits deaths of its citizens in Ukraine conflict

At least two “humanitarian workers” were killed and three others injured, French authorities have admitted

Two French nationals were killed and three others injured this week in the hostilities between Kiev and Moscow, the French government said on Friday. Paris insists they were doing humanitarian work on the Ukrainian side.

The announcement was made by French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne, who denounced the incident as an example of “Russian barbarity.”

“Two French humanitarian workers paid with their lives for their commitment to the Ukrainians. Three were injured,” Sejourne wrote on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). A similar message came from French President Emmanuel Macron, who said people he described as volunteers had been killed in a Russian strike. He condemned the attack as a “cowardly and unworthy act.” (France has changed it’s story a couple of times now, they should prove to Russia they were Humanitarian Workers, if they really want anyone to believe them. Why do you think France has been thoroughly kicked out of 3 or more African Countries?)

While France’s government did not reveal any further details of the affair, the strike that killed the French citizens apparently took place earlier this week in Kherson. According to Aleksandr Prokudin, the head of the Ukrainian-controlled part of the Russian region, a number of French “volunteers” were hit in Berislav, a town located some 70km east of Kherson city.

Earlier this month,Russia claimed it killed scores of French mercenaries in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkov. The Russian military said it conducted “a high-precision strike on the temporary assembly point of foreign fighters,” killing over 60 of them and injuring some 20 more.

In the wake of the deadly strike on the French nationals, Paris officially denied having any mercenaries fighting for Ukraine. At the same time, Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu insisted that France, being a “democratic country,” could not actually forbid its citizens from voluntarily joining Kiev’s ranks, should they desire to do so.

According to Moscow’s latest estimates, more than 5,900 foreign mercenaries have been killed in Ukraine since the start of the conflict in February 2022.

U.S. Space Force Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman presided over a ceremony along with Gen. Stephen N. Whiting, U.S. Space Command commander, formally activating U.S. Space Forces-Space Jan. 31.

S4S was established Dec. 6, 2023, when Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall redesignated Space Operations Command-West as S4S, a U.S. Space Force Component Field Command directly subordinate to the Chief of Space Operations for execution of the Secretary of the Air Force’s responsibilities under Title 10, U.S. Code for Service-specific administration and support functions.

“With the establishment of Space Forces-Space, Space Force commits to providing a cadre of space experts who will serve as a critical part of the Joint Force, support our allies, and enable our partners as we integrate space into our shared operations, activities and investments,” Saltzman said. “As a service component focused on mission operations, it will now take on the massive responsibility of ensuring its assigned Space Force forces generate the space effects needed by the nation to deter conflict and support national interests.”

Previously, Space Operations Command was assigned to U.S. Space Command as the Space Force service component. The service component responsibilities have been removed from Space Operations Command and realigned under S4S.

Following the activation, U.S. Space Force Lt. Gen. Douglas A. Schiess ceremonially assumed command of S4S although he has commanded the unit since its establishment last December.

“Today, the Space Force ceremoniously establishes Space Forces–Space, a single service component entrusted to support all space-based and terrestrial space-based operations, giving our global operations a combat edge,” Schiess said. “Here at S4S we must ‘Protect, Defend, and Deliver’ to ensure there is never a day without space for our Nation, Allies, and Partners.”

The activation of S4S ensures space forces are most efficiently presented to U.S. Space Command to best meet challenges presented by the dynamic national security environment and the return to great power competition.

“Our space capabilities, most of them operated by S4S, enable the joint force to communicate, navigate, derive intelligence, execute command and control and conduct military operations untethered to terrestrial networks,” said Whiting. “Space capabilities allow our joint force to be a truly global military able to see over the next hill and able to conduct operations anywhere on earth.”

S4S’s mission is to plan, integrate, conduct, and assess global space operations in order to deliver combat relevant space effects, in, from, and to space, for Combatant Commanders, Coalition partners, the Joint Force and the Nation.

“From this day forward, Space Forces-Space will enhance the security of our nation and our responsiveness across components,” Saltzman said. “That level of coordination will be invaluable because space has become more and more central to joint operations. We are better connected, more informed, more precise, and more lethal thanks to the space capabilities directed by this small and mighty team here at Vandenberg.”
