Volusia County, Port Orange launch prescribed burns today.

The skies were a little smokier in parts of Volusia County Tuesday as officials conducted two prescribed burns.

Volusia County's Resource Stewardship Division launched a prescribed burn in Deep Creek Preserve at 10 a.m. The burn is for 76 acres off County Road 415 near DeLand and New Smyrna Beach, according to a Facebook post by the Volusia County government.

The burn will be conducted north of North Pasture Road and won't have an impact on public trails, according to the county.

The burn is to help the ecosystem and cut down on flammable vegetation to help keep wildfires from getting out of control.

Prescribed burning means "the controlled application of fire to wildland fuels in either a natural or modified state," according to Volusia County. "It is conducted under specific environmental conditions that allow the fire to be confined to a predetermined area and at the same time produce the intensity required to attain planned resource management objectives."

Also, the city of Port Orange planned to conduct a prescribed burn starting about noon Tuesday west of I-95 at the west end of Shunz Road on about 50 acres, city spokesman Michael Springer said.

People might see smoke from Shunz Road and the north end of Campsite Road, according to the city.

The burn is part of the city's forest management plan. The burn should be finished today, Springer said.

CAMBRIDGE, MA — After facing weeks of pressure to resign following scandals involving campus antisemitism and plagiarism, Claudine Gay has announced she will step down as Harvard's President. She delivered her remarks this morning in a tearful speech entitled "Gettysburg Address."

Sources say the crowd was moved to tears by the time the speech concluded. "I have concluded that because of the Watergate matter I might not have the support of the Congress that I would consider necessary to back the very difficult decisions and carry out the duties of this office in the way the interests of the nation would require," she concluded. "Therefore, I shall resign from the presidency effective noon tomorrow."

At publishing time, Harvard confirmed they were already interviewing several other communist black women to replace Gay.

Ankara nabbed the alleged operatives weeks after Israel's Shin Bet chief threatened to hunt down Hamas officials living in the country

Turkish police have arrested 33 people based in the country for allegedly spying on behalf of Israel, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced on Tuesday.

Police detained the individuals in Istanbul and seven other provinces on charges of “carrying out international espionage activities” on behalf of the Israeli foreign intelligence service Mossad.

They were reported to have been tracking foreign nationals residing in Turkey for humanitarian reasons, according to the publicly owned news agency Anadolu Agency.

The Istanbul Prosecutor's Office alleges police uncovered a network of individuals who intended to carry out reconnaissance, pursuit, assault and kidnapping operations against foreign nationals in Turkey.

Turkish police have previously broken up spy networks targeting Palestinians living in the country.

However, the most recent arrests follow comments by Ronen Bar, the head of Israel's domestic intelligence agency Shin Bet, who released a voice recording last month announcing that Israel is determined to kill Hamas leaders “in every location", including Turkey.

“In Gaza, in the West Bank, in Lebanon, in Turkey, in Qatar, everyone,” he said in recordings aired by the Kan public broadcaster in December. “It will take a few years, but we will be there in order to do it.”

In response, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that if they "commit such a mistake", they should know that they will pay "a very heavy price" for it.

Embattled Harvard president Claudine Gay resigns after plagiarism, antisemitism scandals

Harvard University president Claudine Gay announced Tuesday she is stepping down from leading the prestigious school and will return to the faculty following weeks of controversy over campus politics and her own academic record.

“It is with a heavy heart but a deep love for Harvard that I write to share that I will be stepping down as president,” Gay wrote in the emotional missive.

“[I]t has become clear that it is in the best interests of Harvard for me to resign so that our community can navigate this moment of extraordinary challenge with a focus on the institution rather than any individual,” she explained of the decision.

News of Gay’s resignation comes just six months and two days into her historic presidency — which marked the first time a black leader helmed the nation’s most prestigious university — and broke one day after six new allegations of plagiarism brought the total number of claims against her to well over two dozen.

Gay had also come under fire in October for her slow response to condemn Hamas for its terror attack on Israel. In her resignation, she said she had also been subjected to racism since the controversy started.

“It has been distressing to have doubt cast on my commitments to confronting hate and to upholding scholarly rigor — two bedrock values that are fundamental to who I am — and frightening to be subjected to personal attacks and threats fueled by racial animus.”

The Harvard Corporation — the university’s highest governing body — also confirmed Gay’s resignation in its own statement.

Harvard provost and chief academic officer Alan M. Garber will step in as interim president, the corporation said.

House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who questioned Gay during her disastrous appearance before Congress, pulled no punches after hearing of the resignation.

“The resignation of Harvard’s antisemitic plagiarist president is long overdue. Claudine Gay’s morally bankrupt answers to my questions made history as the most viewed Congressional testimony in the history of the US Congress,” said Stefanik, a Harvard alumna.

A video timeline produced by Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol protesters shows a clearer picture of the shooting death of Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt by a Capitol Police officer.

The just-released video, “J6: A True Timeline,” shows the moment Babbitt attempted to enter the House speaker’s lobby and was shot by Lt. Michael Byrd in the neck or shoulder.

Drawn from official video, police body cameras, surveillance film, and the videos of those at the Capitol, the new timeline tries to put into focus the chaos of the day and include some of the context left out of media summations and the report released by the House Jan. 6 investigation.

It shows Babbitt followed by a journalist with her camera running approach the barricaded speaker’s lobby. There were three officers there to meet her. Within seconds, there were other people behind Babbitt.

The video then shifts to the House chamber, and the single gunshot can be heard. The timeline goes back to the lobby, where protesters are smashing the glass doors. At one point from the left and inside the lobby, a gun appears.

At their Oct. 25 meeting, China planning board members postponed action on Bryan Mason’s application, and scheduled a public hearing when they return to it on Nov. 22. They approved Angela Glidden’s application.

Mason applied for what he and codes officer Nicholas French considered a change of use for a shipping container, on Mason’s property at 1144 Route 3 (right next to M. A. Haskell Fuel Company, he said).

Mason said the container had been used for storage. He plans to convert it to a solventless hash lab.

A solventless hash lab, he explained, turns marijuana plants into hash oil, which is the basic ingredient for consumer products like marijuana gummy bears. Hash oil is much in demand; there are three other labs in Maine, all backed up on orders, Mason said.

Mason will not make consumer products; he will sell the oil to companies that do. He anticipates no retail traffic at his property, at least not in the near future. The process does not produce any troublesome waste products.

Planning board members found that Mason’s application was incomplete, lacking evidence to demonstrate that the new use would meet all the criteria in the town’s Land Use Ordinance. They asked him to submit a more detailed proposal, accompanied by a copy of his state license.

They questioned whether change of use of a building was the appropriate category, because approval to use the shipping container for storage came from a prior codes officer, with no planning board involvement required.

Their unanimous decision was to hold a public hearing on Mason’s application, followed by board discussion that might lead to an immediate decision. Because their next regular meeting night will be election day, they rescheduled the meeting to Tuesday evening, Nov. 22.

Glidden’s application was to increase the capacity of the childcare she runs at 135 Windsor Road from 20 children to 31 children. Required state approvals and permits are in hand or pending, she said.

Board members again found the application had insufficient information, but because the issue is an expansion of an existing use, with no other change, they took a brief recess to allow Glidden, with French’s help, to respond more completely.

Dear Members of the Harvard Community,

It is with a heavy heart but a deep love for Harvard that I write to share that I will be stepping down as president. This is not a decision I came to easily. Indeed, it has been difficult beyond words because I have looked forward to working with so many of you to advance the commitment to academic excellence that has propelled this great university across centuries. But, after consultation with members of the Corporation, it has become clear that it is in the best interests of Harvard for me to resign so that our community can navigate this moment of extraordinary challenge with a focus on the institution rather than any individual.

It is a singular honor to be a member of this university, which has been my home and my inspiration for most of my professional career. My deep sense of connection to Harvard and its people has made it all the more painful to witness the tensions and divisions that have riven our community in recent months, weakening the bonds of trust and reciprocity that should be our sources of strength and support in times of crisis. Amidst all of this, it has been distressing to have doubt cast on my commitments to confronting hate and to upholding scholarly rigor—two bedrock values that are fundamental to who I am—and frightening to be subjected to personal attacks and threats fueled by racial animus.

Harvard President Claudine Gay will resign Tuesday afternoon, bringing an end to the shortest presidency in the University's history, according to a person with knowledge of the decision.

University Provost Alan M. Garber '76 will serve as Harvard's interim president during a search for Gay's permanent successor, the Harvard Corporation — the University's highest governing body — announced in an email on Tuesday.

Harvard spokesperson Jonathan L. Swain declined to comment on Gay's decision to step down.

Gay’s resignation — just six months and two days into the presidency — comes amid growing allegations of plagiarism and lasting doubts over her ability to respond to antisemitism on campus after her disastrous congressional testimony Dec. 5.

Gay weathered scandal after scandal over her brief tenure, facing national backlash for her administration’s response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack and allegations of plagiarism in her scholarly work.

Gay is expected to announce her decision to step down to Harvard affiliates in an email later today. The Corporation is also expected to make a statement about the decision.

The announcement comes three weeks after the Corporation announced unanimous support for Gay after “extensive deliberations” following the congressional hearing.

Longboard Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:LBPH) released topline data from the PACIFIC Phase 1b/2a study evaluating bexicaserin (LP352) for seizures associated with a broad range of Developmental and Epileptic Encephalopathies (DEEs).

In the study, 52 participants were enrolled to evaluate the safety, tolerability, efficacy, and pharmacokinetics of oral bexicaserin (6 mg, 9 mg, and 12 mg) three times daily (TID) versus placebo.

The median change in countable motor seizure frequency (primary efficacy endpoint) from baseline for the evaluable participants treated with bexicaserin (n=35) was a decrease of 53.3%, compared to a 20.8% decrease for those receiving placebo (n=9).

Overall, this represents a placebo-adjusted reduction in seizure frequency of 32.5%.

The median change in countable motor seizure frequency from baseline in the DS, LGS, and DEE Other cohorts decreased by 72.1%, 48.1%, and 61.2%, respectively.

This represents a placebo-adjusted reduction in seizure frequency of 27.3% and 28.6% in LGS and DEE Other, respectively.

Bexicaserin exhibited favorable safety and tolerability results. Most participants (85.7%) in the bexicaserin treated group (n=35) that started the maintenance period tolerated the highest dose (12 mg).

100% of the participants who completed the PACIFIC Study elected to enroll in the ongoing 52-week open-label extension study.

With allegations piling up, Claudine Gay accused her opponents of racism as she stepped down

Claudine Gay announced in a statement on Tuesday that she has resigned from her post as Harvard University’s president. Gay’s tenure was the shortest in the prestigious institution’s history, and ended with almost 50 accusations of academic theft.

Over the last six weeks,Gay has been accused of almost 50 instances of plagiarism throughout her academic career. The scandal kicked off when conservative activist Chris Rufo discovered evidence that Gay had lifted material verbatim from other scholars for her 1997 dissertation, titled ‘Taking Charge: Black Electoral Success and the Redefinition of American Policies’.

“It is with a heavy heart but a deep love for Harvard that I write to share that I will be stepping down as president,” Gay wrote. “After consultation with members of the Corporation, it has become clear that it is in the best interests of Harvard for me to resign,” she added, referring to the university’s governing body.

Conservative pundits had ridiculed Gay as a “diversity hire,” and accused her of building a “diversity empire” on campus using the university’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) office to denigrate white students, rename buildings which were named after white men, and push so-called ‘critical race theory’ workshops and seminars.

However, it was Gay’s defense of anti-Israel speech on campus before the US Congress in early December that first put her in the crosshairs of pro-Israel liberals and conservatives alike. Among this group are Democratic Party and Harvard donor Bill Ackman. Ackman claimed that Gay had been hired based on race and gender criteria set by Harvard’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion office, and boosted the subsequent plagiarism allegations in a bid to oust the embattled president.

An internal Harvard investigation found four “instances of inadequate citation,” but the Ivy League university stopped short of using the term “plagiarism” and cleared her of “research misconduct” in mid-December. However, critics claimed that the review was rushed, and new allegations of plagiarism were made against Gay as recently as Monday.

Gay was Harvard’s first black president.Having served only six months and one day, her presidency was the shortest in the university’s 388-year history.

In her resignation letter, Gay did not admit any wrongdoing. Instead, she accused her opponents of subjecting her to “personal attacks and threats fueled by racial animus.”

Shortly after the letter was published, Rufo took to X (formerly Twitter) to promise further action. “This is the beginning of the end for DEI in America's institutions,” he wrote. “We will expose you. We will outmaneuver you. And we will not stop fighting until we have restored colorblind equality in our great nation.”

Doubts rise over Biden’s 2020 election victory – poll

Only 62% of Americans believe the president was legitimately elected, a new survey has shown

Only about six in ten Americans believe that Joe Biden was fairly elected as president in 2020, indicating declining voter confidence in his legitimacy as he seeks reelection this year, a new Washington Post poll has shown.

The survey, conducted last month with the University of Maryland and released on Tuesday, found that 62% of US adults believe Biden was legitimately elected as president. That compares with 69% when the same question was asked two years ago.

The results follow three years of legacy media coverage defending Biden’s 2020 victory and dismissing allegations of election fraud by former President Donald Trump as totally unsubstantiated. The poll also comes at a time when Biden is trailing Trump in the 2024 presidential race, despite the fact that his Republican rival faces felony indictments in four separate criminal cases, including two in which he’s accused of conspiring to overturn his 2020 loss.

Just 31% of Republicans believe Biden was legitimately elected, down from 39% two years ago, the WaPo poll showed. The percentage of independents who say the 2020 election result was valid dropped to 66 from 72. Even among Democrats, confidence in Biden’s legitimacy fell to 91% from 94%.

With voter frustrations rising over an illegal immigration crisis and high inflation, Biden’s reelection campaign is focusing largely on portraying Trump as a threat to democracy. However, voter attitudes over Trump’s role in the January 2021 US Capitol riot are softening, according to the WaPo poll. Just 37% of US adults believe the ex-president bears a “great deal” of responsibility for the riot, down from 45% when the same question was asked a week after the incident.

Biden has lost support in the demographic segmentsthat underpinned his 2020 election victory, a new USA Today poll has shown. Just 57% of black voters currently support the incumbent, compared with the 87% Biden carried in 2020.Biden now trails Trump by nine percentage pointsamong Hispanic voters, a turnabout from the 65%-32% margin of victory that the Democrat previously carried in the segment.Voters under age 35, who overwhelmingly supported Biden in 2020, favor Trump by a six-point margin currently, the poll showed.

Biden has expressed frustration with polls showing him getting low marks from voters on his economic policies, suggesting that media coverage is to blame. Shiite General Mehdi Sabih al-Gharawi who was in charge of the Mosul Army divisions “had left the city”. Al Gharawi had worked hand in glove with the US military. He took over the command of Mosul in September 2011 from US Col Scott McKean. In June 2014, Al Gharawi was co-opted and instructed by his US counterparts to abandon his command.
