The records, which delve into Mayorkas's stint as Obama’s Director of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), allege that he used his position to inappropriately favor political allies seeking visas. However, more damning are the undisclosed communications within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) suggesting his interest in furthering these rewards.

A pivotal case involves the Gulfcoast Automotive Investment Fund, which, under CEO Anthony Rodham, brother to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Terry McAuliffe, former Clinton advisor and future Governor of Virginia, sought EB-5 visas for Chinese investors. These visas were crucial for the investors connected to Greentech Automotive, a company manufacturing electric cars in Mississippi and Louisiana. One striking instance from June 2010 involves Mayorkas directly engaging his staff following a request from Virginia Senator Mark Warner about delays in Greentech Automotive’s visa petitions. Furthermore, despite assurances of limited involvement, Mayorkas's subsequent actions contradicted his statements, as he implored his staff to address the McAuliffe-Rodham business with "appropriate urgency."

Most troubling is Mayorkas's decision to bypass ethics counsel after being advised against involvement in the visa adjudication, suggesting a willful disregard for ethical guidelines and the law. His subsequent assistance to McAuliffe's company and direct communications with the McAuliffe for Governor Campaign further intensify the ethical concerns.

In light of these findings, America First Legal is questioning why Mayorkas has not disclosed his SF-86 Background Check in response to a FOIA request. The organization's lawsuit aims to obtain the Biden Administration documents that courts mandated the Trump Administration produce, seeking transparency and accountability.

Cory Montez Hairston, president/CEO of Congressional Federal Credit Union, died suddenly last week on August 16. He became president/CEO last October, following 17 years with the credit union.

...There is a difference from the scope of the initial appeal in Colorado in that the final grounds for reversal in Maine references Trump's public speeches as protected under the First Amendment. We are waiting for the Colorado filing in the U.S. Supreme Court.

...The Maine Superior Court now has until Jan. 17 to decide under state law. It can then now to the state supreme court and ultimately the U.S. Supreme Court.

Victoria White is a peaceful protester that was brutally beaten to a bloody pulp by a D.C. police officer during the January 6th protest. Victoria was later arrested in a FBI raid on her home, and sentenced to jail time for “interfering with law enforcement officers during a civil disorder.”

Victoria is now fighting back and suing the Capitol Police Officer that brutalized her mercilessly with his fists and a baton, causing her to black out and subsequent brain damage. White is also suing the Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson to investigate her beating and the police brutality that occurred on January 6th.

The lawsuit filed Request for Relief states:

“Victoria White seeks economic and punitive damages against Jason Bagshaw for violating her constitutional rights, including but not limited to her constitutional right to be free from unlawful seizures, her constitutional right to be free from excessive and unreasonable force, and her constitutional right not to be discriminated against for her viewpoint. Victoria White also seeks the Court to order Speaker Michael Johnson to conduct an investigation into the police brutality on January 6, 2021.”

It will be interesting to see whether Speaker Johnson conducts an investigation or appeals White’s lawsuit. So far, the GOP House has failed to investigate January 6th since they took power in 2022.

CAIRO, Jan 2 (Reuters) – British maritime security firm Ambrey said on Tuesday that a Malta-flagged container ship reported seeing three explosions towards its port quarter, 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Yemen’s Mocha.

The vessel master was heard over VHF, calling a coalition warship, the firm added.

Ambrey said it understood that three missiles had been fired from the direction of Yemen’s Taiz Governorate.

A nearby vessel reported seeing a small boat, about 50 meters (160 feet) in length, and with two lights, within 1 mile (1.6 km) of the incident location soon afterwards, the firm added.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) organization on Tuesday said it received reports of up to three explosions one to five nautical miles from a merchant vessel in the Bab al-Mandab strait 33 nautical miles east of Eritrea’s Assab.

Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi militants, who control much of Yemen including the capital Sanaa, have stepped up attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea in protest against Israel’s war in Gaza.

“It was assessed this particular vessel was not Israel-affiliated, but other vessels in the operator’s fleet had regularly called Israel, and this affiliation might have been sufficient for her to be targeted,” Ambrey said.

Several shipping lines have suspended operations through the Red Sea in response to the attacks, instead taking the longer journey around Africa.

The Houthis have vowed to continue their attacks until Israel halts the conflict in Gaza, and warned that it would attack U.S. warships if the militia group itself was targeted.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise has endorsed former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race.

On Tuesday, Scalise (R-La.) posted his endorsement for the 45th president on X (Twitter), saying he is looking forward to working with Trump, the Republican House and the Senate “to fight for those families who are struggling under the weight of Biden’s failed policies.”

Trump responded to the endorsement on his social media platform, Truth Social, saying it was a “great honor” to have his endorsement.

Objector-Appellant Doe 107 appeals from the November 18, 2022 order unsealing certain litigation materials that identify her. Doe 107 argues that the District Court abused its discretion by "ignor[ing]" her assertion that identifying her "could place her in mortal danger in her culturally conservative home country," in which "'honor' killings are a real risk," and "instead concluding [that] she … offered no more than generalized concerns of adverse publicity." We assume the parties' familiarity with the underlying facts, the procedural history of the case, and the issues on appeal….

On the record before us, we cannot confidently hold that the District Court did not err in concluding that Doe 107's proffered facts constituted only "generalized concerns of adverse publicity [that] do not outweigh the presumption of public access." In her submission to the District Court, Doe 107 stated that she had received "'hate mail' from someone who saw [her] name listed as a witness who may have information regarding [Jeffrey] Epstein's and [Ghislaine] Maxwell's alleged illegal conduct." As many as 66 people on board the Nicaragua-bound plane that was sent back to India on "human trafficking" concerns were reportedly from the western state of Gujarat. Initial investigation by the state Crime Investigation Department (CID) has found that these 66 had agreed to pay anywhere between Rs 60-80 lakh ($72,000-$96,000) to immigration agents to cross into the US illegally.

“In order to migrate illegally to the US, they had agreed to pay between Rs 60 lakh to 80 lakh (in total) to the local agents,” the CID stated, adding that passengers paid an advance of up to Rs 8 lakh ($9,600), including the ticket fees to the agents.

The state CID said it has the information of 15 agents, who had promised to facilitate the alleged illegal immigration and that it will soon question them. CID says the majority of the passengers from Gujarat had only studied till the 8th or maximum 12th standard.

To expand its probe, Gujarat CID has written to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and sought details from Dubai authorities on the agency that chartered the flight as well as on the financial transactions to secure visas from the UAE.

What happened with the plane and passengers?

On December 21, 303 Indian passengers boarded a Legend Airlines' A340 flight operated by Romanian company Legend Airlines in Dubai. The plane had stopped in Vatry, France for refuelling, where, based on a tip-off that the plane was carrying suspected victims of trafficking - it was grounded for four days.

After being interrogated by the French authorities, the plane landed in Mumbai on December 26, albeit with 276 passengers. The rest applied for asylum and were transferred to a special zone in Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport for asylum-seekers.

Among the passengers who stayed in France were five minors, who have now been taken into the care of child welfare services.

Notably, passengers of the chartered plane had arrived in UAE at different times and each of them had legal tourist visas for entering Dubai. However, they all congregated at the same place and left for Nicaragua together before the flight was cut short in France.

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense has reported that four Chinese spy balloons were detected floating over the island nation this week. The first was identified Monday, with three more spotted flying over the island on Tuesday. Chinese spy balloons have previously been detected flying near Taiwan, but this is the first time officials have reported such balloons crossing directly over the island nation.

According to ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Sun Li-fang, the balloons appeared to be the kind designed to collect atmospheric data. “As for whether they have other purposes,” he said, the government “is closely monitoring and controlling the situation, taking appropriate measures, and summarizing their flight paths for judgment and analysis.”

A similar balloon was found floating over the U.S. in January last year and was eventually shot down. Despite Beijing’s claims that it was merely a weather balloon that had drifted off course, an analysis of the debris by U.S. government agencies found that the balloon carried specialized equipment used to collect photos and videos, as well as other kinds of data. The appearance of the Chinese balloons over Taiwan comes as the country is preparing for a three-way presidential election on January 13, in which both opposition candidates have expressed a desire to take a more friendly approach to China than the current ruling Party. What is that unusual red halo surrounding this aurora? It is a Stable Auroral Red (SAR) arc. SAR arcs are rare and have only been acknowledged and studied since 1954. The featured wide-angle photograph, capturing nearly an entire SAR arc surrounding more common green and red aurora, was taken earlier this month from Poolburn, New Zealand, during an especially energetic geomagnetic storm. Why SAR arcs form remains a topic of research, but is likely related to Earth's protective magnetic field, a field created by molten iron flowing deep inside the Earth. This magnetic field usually redirects incoming charged particles from the Sun's wind toward the Earth's poles. However, it also traps a ring of ions closer to the equator, where they can gain energy from the magnetosphere during high solar activity. Members of the House Oversight Committee will receive a classified briefing on unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), better known as UFOs, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: Congressional interest in the issue has grown in recent years, with a small but vocal group of lawmakers in both parties pushing for greater transparency from the government on the issue.

Driving the news: The members-only briefing will be held in the Office of House Security, according to a notice obtained by Axios.

The briefing is being provided by the Office of Inspector General of the Intelligence Community, the notice said.

The backdrop: A bipartisan group of Oversight Committee members led by Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) sent a letter to intel community inspector general Thomas Monheim in August requesting more details about UFOs, including any programs to reverse engineer them or retrieve crashed UFOs.

The letter was in response to testimony the previous month from former intelligence official David Grusch, who claimed the government was in possession of "nonhuman biologics" from a recovered UFO.

The lawmakers also formed a Congressional UAP Caucus, consisting of Burchett and Reps. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.), Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), Eric Burlison (R-Mo.) and Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.).

An amateur ham radio enthusiast has made one of the coolest contacts possible, talking with an astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) using a homemade antenna.

The ham radio operator, Doug, made contact with the ISS as it passed overhead in July 2023.

"I've made numerous voice and APRS [Automatic Packet Reporting System] contacts over the FM satellites and the ISS repeater," Doug wrote on his YouTube page. "But I've always wanted to talk to an astronaut. Over the Memorial Day weekend I finally made that contact. I made contact with the ISS and talked to Woody Hoburg. What a thrill."

Though they of course have other duties on board the space station, many astronauts have ham radio licenses and are happy to talk to operators back here on Earth.

NASA, ESA, CSA, and Roscosmos all take part in the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program, which encourages school children to contact the space station, with the goal of expanding their interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The ISS runs several sessions talking to schoolchildren throughout the year via radio, but also makes occasional contact with amateur enthusiasts using their own equipment.

“It's pretty rare to speak to an astronaut outside of a scheduled educational contact. There are several factors that need to align for it to happen,” one ham radio operator explained to IFLScience after he and his daughter Isabella made contact with astronaut Kjell Lindgren in August 2022.

“The ISS must be passing within LOS [Line Of Sight]... at a time that coincides with an astronauts ‘down time,’ as in they must not be working doing an official scheduled task. There must be an astronaut who is actively using the Amateur Radio equipment to make unscheduled contacts."

Hearing the ISS is much easier, requiring only a simple setup, while watching a live view from the ISS is as straightforward as going onto YouTube.

Sjoberg was seen with a smile on her face as she walked around West Palm Beach not far from Epstein's Florida mansion, which has been demolished by new owners. Sjoberg, now a hairdresser living in Florida, has previously said Maxwell recruited her to provide massages for Epstein in 2001 when she was at college.

Nearly 200 names that had previously been redacted from a long-settled sex trafficking suit against Jeffrey Epstein's accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell will soon be made public, a judge has ruled. In addition, new evidence from Sjoberg is due to be presented in a US court this week.

The legal documents could reveal more details of her alleged encounter with the royal.Sjoberg has previously claimed the King's brother put his hand on her breast at the Manhattan home of multi-millionaire pedophile Epstein in 2001.

She won’t be leading the Crimson, but green shouldn’t be a problem.

Outgoing Harvard University president Claudine Gay will still likely earn nearly $900,000 a year despite being forced to resign her position as the school’s top administrator.

Political science professor Gay — who stepped down amid a tempest of allegations that she did not do enough to combat antisemitism and academic plagiarism Tuesday — will return to a position on the Cambridge, Mass., school’s faculty.

Prior to being named president just six months ago, Gay earned $879,079 as a faculty of arts and sciences dean in 2021 and $824,068 in 2020, according to records published by the university.

Her new position was not specified Tuesday, but she is expected to receive a salary comparable to what she previously received — if not higher.

It was also unclear how much of her presidential salary of roughly $1 million Gay would be entitled to after only serving in the post for six months.

Her predecessor, Lawrence Bacow, pulled in $1.3 million annually before his departure, according to the Harvard Crimson.

Alan M. Garber, who currently serves as provost and chief academic officer, will serve as interim president until the school selects a new chief, officials said Tuesday.

House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) — a Harvard graduate who emerged as Gay’s chief critic — ripped the decision to allow her to remain on the faculty.

Stefanik argued that Gay’s plagiarism charges are an indelible stain that mars the school’s legitimacy.

“She’s not fit to be a faculty member,” Stefanik told The Post.

“It’s unacceptable when you have students at Harvard who would be expelled for plagiarism to allow a faculty member who has nearly 50 examples of plagiarism in their very slim body of academic work. It’s absurd and everybody knows it. Harvard knows it too.”

A member of Harvard’s student Honor Council also accused administrators of having differing ethical standards for faculty and students.

“Gay’s getting off easy,” the anonymous student told the school paper, noting the simple omission of a quotation mark or absent citation could result in serious consequences such as one term of probation and the stripping away of a student’s “good standing” status.

Following Gay’s departure, there are rumblings that the board which publicly stuck by her until the very end should also be shaken up.

Visiting chemistry scholar Frank Laukien singled out billionaire Chicago hotel owner and senior fellow of the Harvard Corporation Penny Pritzker, telling the New York Times she should “share accountability and resign immediately.”

He added in an email: “We need multiple new independent members on the Harvard Corporation that are not tainted by recent events and failures, and who are not part of the long-standing cronyism at the top of Harvard.”

Gay — who said she was stepping down to allow the school to stabilize amid the firestorm — added in her resignation statement that she’s looking forward to returning to a faculty post “and to the scholarship and teaching that are the lifeblood of what we do.”

An imam was shot and critically wounded Wednesday morning outside a mosque in Newark, New Jersey, the city's public safety director said.

The shooting occurred around 6:15 a.m. at South Orange Avenue and Camden Street, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé told NBC New York.

A city spokesperson said the person shot is an imam at the Masjid Muhammad-Newark. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear.

The imam was taken to University Hospital.

The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said it is gathering information on the shooting.

Expert says new charges against named individuals are unlikely

NEW YORK (NewsNation) — The release of more than 150 names mentioned in court documents from a civil case filed by one of Jeffrey Epstein’s victims was postponed.

The documents won’t be made public until at least Jan. 22, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York confirmed to NewsNation.

The delay comes after a judge granted a 30-day extension to a Jane Doe to consider her appeal to remain confidential.

A judge ruled the names could be unsealed beginning Jan. 1. However, court was closed on that date because of New Year’s.

These documents come from a settled civil lawsuit Virginia Giuffre filed against British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell in 2015.

The Miami Herald has been fighting to unseal documents filed as part of the lawsuit since 2018. The legal battle escalated in December when U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska ordered the names could be unsealed beginning Jan. 1.

Preska ordered some names be redacted to protect the anonymity of minors who were victims of sex crimes.

Giuffre claimed Epstein and Maxwell pressured her as a teenager to engage in sexual relationships with powerful men, including Prince Andrew. Those men denied the allegations and Giuffre later settled a lawsuit against Prince Andrew out of court.

People named in the documents are unlikely to face prosecution if they haven’t already, criminal defense attorney Janet Johnson told NewsNation on Monday.

“These names were actually kept secret because the judge found that because they did not do anything wrong, there wasn’t any reason at that point to release them and embarrass them,” Johnson said.

Several “prominent” names are expected to be mentioned in court documents, according to an ABC News report. One of these names in the redacted filings is that of former President Bill Clinton. Clinton, identified as “Doe 36”, is mentioned in at least 50 filings, the news outlet said.

Allegations against Epstein first surfaced publicly in 2005.

He pleaded guilty to sex charges in Florida and served 13 months in jail. He spent much of that time in a work-release program as part of a deal critics called lenient. He ultimately was required to register as a sex offender.

Federal prosecutors in New York went on to revive the case against Epstein after a series of stories by the Miami Herald in 2018 brought renewed attention to the matter.

In 2019, New York prosecutors said they weren’t bound by the previous non-prosecution deal, and Epstein was again arrested. He killed himself in prison a month later.

Maxwell was arrested at a New Hampshire estate less than one year after Epstein’s death.

A jury convicted her in December 2021 of multiple charges including sex trafficking, conspiracy and transportation of a minor for illegal sexual activity. She is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence.

A fire broke out on Wednesday in one of the oldest shopping districts in Fukuoka prefecture in Japan, with intense flames ravaging some historic buildings. It remained unclear whether anyone was injured.

The fire occurred around 3.10 pm at Kitakyushu's Uomachi Gintengai, the 400-meter-long shopping street established in 1951.

More than 20 fire engines were being deployed, NHK reported.

Uomachi Gintengai is the first arcade shopping district in Japan and features yaki-udon restaurants and bakeries that attract long lines of customers daily.

The bride is the daughter of Janice Colson of Hancock and Dexter Bellows of Hancock. The bridegroom is the son of Carole Baldwin of Skowhegan and Ralph Baldwin of Portland.

The bride’s sister, Charlotte Jordan of Waltham, was matron of honor. The bride’s nieces, Jocelyn and Olivia of Waltham, were the junior bridesmaid and flower girl. Dexter’s wife, Bethany Reynolds of Hancock, photographed the wedding.

The groom’s brother, Damon Baldwin of Canaan, was the best man. The bride’s brother, Dana Bellows of Seattle, gave the toast. The groom’s father and the bride’s grandfather, Bill Bellows of Topsham, read poetry at the service.

A reception was held at Slate’s in Hallowell, the location of Shenna and Brandon’s first date.

Shenna graduated from Hancock Grammar School in 1989, Ellsworth High School in 1993 and Middlebury College in 1997. She was employed at the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine in Portland and will be running for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate.

Brandon Baldwin graduated from Skowhegan High School in 1994 and Middlebury College in 1998. He is employed at the Maine Office of the Attorney General as the coordinator of the statewide Civil Rights Team Project.

“He’s young, energetic and really connects with young people very well,” Attorney General Steven Rowe said of Baldwin to the Bangor Daily News in 2008. “Through his efforts, the program will be able to be more school-specific with curriculum.”

Influenza remains a cause of substantial morbidity and mortality in the United States (1). During influenza epidemics, visits to physicians, clinics, and emergency rooms, as well as hospitalizations caused by influenza-related complications, may increase. Persons greater than or equal to 65 years of age and those with underlying chronic health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, and certain metabolic conditions are at increased risk for complications of influenza infection and are more likely than the general population to be hospitalized if infected. During major epidemics, hospitalization rates among the elderly and persons who have underlying chronic health problems may increase twofold to fivefold compared with nonepidemic periods (2). Influenza epidemics also are associated with increased mortality. Since 1968-69, the influenza virus subtype generally associated with the highest mortality has been influenza A(H3N2). During nine of 20 influenza seasons (from 1972-73 through 1991-92), greater than 20,000 influenza-associated excess deaths occurred each season; during four of these seasons, greater than 40,000 deaths occurred (CDC, unpublished data). Although there is season-to-season variability, in recent years greater than 90% of influenza-associated deaths have occurred among persons greater than or equal to 65 years of age (3).

Hispanic leaders warn Democrats: Voters are fed up with Biden

President Joe Biden is heading into 2024 with concerning numbers among Hispanic voters: A new USA Today/Suffolk survey shows him trailing Donald Trump by five percentage points, with many reluctant to back either candidate. While it’s an especially rough poll, others have also shown him struggling to match his 2020 numbers with a key swath of the Democratic base — and Hispanic leaders say they’re seeing the same problems on the ground.

“It’s a matador red flag flying out there — the Hispanic vote is totally up for grabs,” Domingo Garcia, national president of the League of United Latin American Citizens, told Semafor. “[Trump’s] cutting the margins. And in battleground states like Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, that can be a big difference.”

Conversations with leaders of Hispanic groups and political consultants in both parties underscored Biden’s difficult path forward. His challenges with Hispanic voters are not dissimilar to his problems with the broader electorate: Dissatisfaction over inflation, concerns about record-high border crossings, and lack of excitement over his policy accomplishments. And even as he works to shore up border security with a potential bipartisan deal in Congress, members of his own party warn he could also lose support in November if an agreement ends up being perceived as overly hostile to immigrant communities.

Garcia told Semafor that the “fear of a second Trump presidency” and the prospect of dramatically stepped-up deportations remains an asset for Biden, especially with women. But the president still hasn’t figured out how to package his presidency in an appealing way.

“They’re lacking a core message and right now Latino voters are really concerned about economics — inflation has eaten away at their paycheck, the cost of rent… trying to buy a house seems to be more elusive than ever,” he said.

Javier Palomarez, president and CEO of the United States Hispanic Business Council — a leading advocate for Hispanic-owned firms across the U.S. — criticized the administration’s triumphal “Bidenomics” push, arguing it’s not reflective of what people on the ground are actually experiencing.

Sen. Tom Cotton Endorses Donald Trump: ‘Everything Has Gone to Hell’ Under Biden

“When Donald Trump was president, America was safe, strong, and prosperous,” Cotton told Fox News Digital. “With Joe Biden as president, everything has gone to hell: families can’t afford groceries, our border is wide open to a full-blown invasion, and our enemies are starting wars everywhere.”

“I endorse President Trump and I look forward to working with him to win back the White House and the Senate so we can help hardworking Arkansans suffering from Joe Biden’s disastrous policies.”

He added, “It’s time to get our country back on track.”

Cotton, a national security and immigration hawk, flirted with a presidential run himself before deciding against it as it became clear Trump would run again. The Arkansan worked closely with the Trump White House on border security and immigration policies and likely would be a candidate for a role in a future Trump administration.

Earlier Wednesday, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) endorsed Trump, calling him “our party’s clear frontrunner.” With Majority Leader Steve Scalise’s (R-LA) endorsement the day before, the top five House Republicans have now endorsed the president.

Trump’s endorsement from members of the House number around a hundred.

Yet in the Senate, the story is different. Cotton joins around twenty Senate Republicans in endorsing Trump, although no senior members of Senate leadership have done so.
