South Korea is threatening to arm Ukraine in response to North Korea's support for Russia

South Korea threatened to send weapons and resources to Ukraine in response to its longtime foe, North Korea, escalating support for Russia's invasion.

If it goes ahead, it could prove a powerful ally.

After an emergency National Security Council meeting this week, top South Korean officials condemned North Korea for sending troops to Russia.

Their mission has not been made explicit, but Ukraine has said they are there to join Russia's invasion.

Officials also briefed news outlets that Seoul could send weapons to Ukraine as part of a series of phased countermeasures.

South Korean news agency Yonhap on Tuesday cited security officials who said Seoul could even send military personnel to Ukraine to monitor North Korea's presence in the conflict.

Russia's foreign ministry threatened South Korea with "security consequences" should it get involved, Yonhap reported.

A fearsome arsenal

Analysts say Russia has a good reason to be concerned.

"South Korean weapons could potentially make a significant difference on both Ukraine's defensive capabilities and offensive capabilities," Jeremy Chan, a China and northeast Asia analyst at the Eurasia Group, told Business Insider.

South Korea, a US ally, has built a formidable arsenal of weapons in its decadeslong stand-off with North Korea.

It includes antiaircraft and anti-missile systems which could help Ukraine defend its towns and infrastructure from Russian attacks, Chan said.

There are also "world-class" K9 Howitzer guns, K2 tanks, and multiple-rocket-launcher systems, Chan said.

Seoul has already aided the supply of much-needed 155 mm shells to Ukraine, albeit at one remove.

South Korea sent ammo to Western allies like the US and Poland, which freed them up to send their own to Ukraine.

Ellen Kim, a Korea expert with the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC, told BI that South Korean support for Kyiv could include giving intelligence on North Korean weapons and tactics.

"South Korea could assist in a psychological warfare campaign against North Korean soldiers who may not want to fight in the war" as well, said Kim.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Wednesday "there is evidence" that North Korean troops were already training in Russia, and warned against them joining the fight.

Experts on the country's military told BI that soldiers sent there would be put under harsh measures to discourage them from deserting.

South Korea hesitates

Significant obstacles stand in the way of South Korea arming Ukraine, though. Not least is South Korea's long-standing ban on sending military assistance to foreign countries at war.

Chan said South Korea's President Yoon Suk-yeol was domestically unpopular and would encounter difficulties repealing the law via South Korea's center-left-dominated National Assembly.

"North Korea's actions would have to present a clearer and more immediate threat to South Korea's national security before we would expect the National Assembly to authorize export of weapons to Ukraine," he said.

Another factor is South Korea's desire to not entirely destroy its relationship with Russia, despite its growing fears about the Kremlin empowering North Korea and emboldening its leader Kim Jong Un, said Chain and Kim, the analysts.

In return for North Korean shells and military support in Ukraine, the Kremlin has sought to stymie UN inspections of North Korea's nuclear program and could be prepared to hand it sophisticated military technology.

Entrapment dilemma

Chan said Yoon was figuring out the best way to deter Russia.

"Seoul believes that the threat to provide weapons gives it more leverage over Moscow than it would have if South Korea were to begin providing weapons directly," he said.

Future diplomatic and trade ties are another reason South Korea is hesitating to act — as well as the prospect of being pulled further into the Ukraine war than it intends.

"There is a possibility South Korea could be shooting at Russians and/or North Koreans, and it would internationalize and widen the war further," Sean McFate, a strategy professor at Georgetown University, told BI.

"Worst case is it sparks a nuclear war on the Korean peninsula that drags the US and China into armed conflict."

But the escalating alliance between Russia and North Korea may soon reach a point where South Korea feels it needs to act.

Because of Russia's increasing reliance on North Korea, Kim finds himself in a powerful position to negotiate sophisticated technology in return.

Such an exchange, said Chan, could be the red line that compels South Korea to get involved in the Ukraine war and send weapons.

Although it has the military power to enable Ukraine to hurt Russia, it's an escalation that comes with real risks.

As Ellen Kim put it: "North Korea's involvement dramatically raises the risk of entrapment for South Korea in the war."

Swiss tourist in Algeria killed in knife attack at cafe in front of her children

A Swiss tourist was murdered in Algeria this month when a knife-wielding man attacked her at a cafe in front of her children, slitting her throat while shouting “Allahu akbar”, media reported.

The attack took place in Djanet in southeastern Algeria on October 11, but was first reported this week by the French newspaper Liberation.

Switzerland’s foreign ministry told AFP that it was aware of “the violent death of a Swiss citizen on October 11 in southeastern Algeria”.

It said she had been part of a group of five travellers, all of them Swiss, but provided no further details.

Algerian authorities have meanwhile remained silent about the attack, and Swiss broadcaster RTS reported that the authorities had even asked residents in the area to refrain from sharing information on social media about what had happened.

At the time of the attack, the woman, whose name and age were not given, was reportedly seated outside a popular Djanet cafe with her children and a friend.

The attacker, reportedly a young man from northern Algeria, slit the woman’s throat, and she later died in hospital, according to RTS.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., will vacate his seat in January 2027 after nearly four decades, but it is his vacated role as the Republican Senate leader in November that has a handful of senators jockeying to be the hand at the reins.

The front-runners for the race are Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and John Thune of South Dakota.

"Senate Republicans are blessed with a deep and talented bench, but Sen. Thune sticks out as someone with the policy and political chops and widespread support inside the conference to get the job," an anonymous former Senate GOP aide told Newsweek. "Few will ever match Mitch McConnell on floor strategy and tactics, but Thune has had years to learn from the master."

A potential third option is Sen. Rick Scott of Florida. However, most political analysts who spoke to Newsweek "did not focus on him as a serious contender."

Speculating on a Trump election win in November, Gregory Koger, a political scientist and professor of political science at the University of Miami, told Newsweek that he could see former President Donald Trump endorsing an unnamed option.

"Both representatives are fairly conventional conservative options," Koger said. "If Donald Trump wins the presidential election, I would not be surprised to see him try to support a third candidate, or to extract a public pledge of personal loyalty from Cronyn and Thune."

Regarding Thune and Cornyn, Jason Cabel Roe, a political and communications strategist, attributed the outcome in the Senate Republican leadership to the outcome of the presidential election.

"I don't see one being particularly better prepared than the other and I think it will come down to who the caucus thinks can effectively coexist with a President Trump, if he wins, or who will be better prepared to stop a [Kamala] Harris agenda, if she wins," Roe said.

When you reflect a little longer on the horror story of the vampire demon, you will inevitably begin to see parallels (or at least points of contact) with the fiat money system that exists worldwide today.

Under Cover of Darkness

It takes place under the cover of darkness: It is fair to say that the vast majority of people are unaware of how today’s fiat money system is structured, how it operates, or what its effects are. Students in schools and universities are, for the most part, left in the dark about it, and the consequences of the fiat money system, therefore, take most people by surprise—unprepared and relentless. Indeed, how many people know that our current fiat money system is a system in which the state’s central bank holds a coercive monopoly on the creation of fiat central bank money, while commercial banks issue their own fiat commercial bank money based on central bank fiat money.

Vulnerable Victims and Life Sucked Away

The victims are often helpless and unaware, with the fruits of their labor effectively being siphoned away. Fiat money has something vampire-like about it, enabling one group (those allowed to create fiat money) to live at the expense of others (those forced to use the monopolized money). The first recipients of newly-created fiat money are the beneficiaries. They can use the new money to purchase goods and services whose prices have not yet risen, making them wealthier.

As the money changes hands, it increases demand, and prices of goods rise accordingly. As a result, the late recipients of the new money can only buy goods at higher prices, leaving them at a disadvantage. The first recipients improve their position at the expense of the late recipients. The most severely affected are those who receive nothing from the newly-created money supply—they are, in effect, the ones “sucked dry.”

The vampire-like redistributive effect of fiat money, which operates in the shadows, particularly benefits commercial banks that create fiat commercial bank money, as well as those in a position to take out new bank loans in fiat money.

EU approves €35 billion loan for Ukraine

The sums of money flowing to Ukraine from Europe and the U.S. are enormous

The Council of the European Union has approved a financial support package, which includes an extraordinary macro-level loan of up to €35 billion, as well as a credit cooperation mechanism that will help Ukraine repay €45 billion of loans, the EU council announced.

As part of the new macro-level financial assistance (MFA) approved by the member states, interest income from the funds of the Russian central bank frozen in EU banks will be made available to Ukraine.

The funds will help Ukraine cover the costs of the EU loan and loans provided by G7 partners and to also repay these loans; however, Kyiv can use the amount from the MFA at its discretion.

As Remix News reported just a year ago, the EU approved €66 billion to Ukraine. Between contributions from individual member states and the EU itself, the Kiel Institute Ukraine Support Tracker indicates that Europe has allocated €118 billion in aid, with €74 billion yet to be allocated but slated to go to Ukraine. That does not include huge sums sent to Ukraine from the United States and other countries.

I have lived in Latin America for a long time, or been travelling in and through many different Latin American countries, for years.

The universal agreement is that Trump was better for all the people in Latin America, and that Biden has destroyed most of their ambitions and impoverished many of their people.

They are not single issue individuals who are concerned with mass migration to the States -while some countries have their internal issues ( Venezuela for example ) that has led to mass migration, the hard working individuals of most countries who are not migrating, have to face the problems that Biden created. They cannot import, they are losing tourism due to US inflation, they suffer the prejudice of the effects of the migration, they have lost education opportunity for their best and brightest in the states because those monies go to criminals and the individuals who are not deserving, they have lost business opportunity due to immigration problems, many of which are United States created -for example the US requires migration to be allowed in countries that would otherwise say no (El Salvador was the sole hold out and refuses to allow migration) and force the already struggling country to borne the costs of border to border transport, feeding, housing, in Panama they shut down the Darien Gap on their own only for Biden to demand they reopen the camp and continue the operations with less assistance than before.

Universally, Latin American countries want Trump over Cracklehead Harris. He was heavy handed, but his policies helped not just the United States but all countries. Trump negotiated the end of FARC who was terrorizing Colombia displacing millions, and now FARC is making a come back -there are hundreds of thousands "internally displaced" Colombians who are fleeing their centuries old homes to other areas of Colombia due to fears of Harris winning and the rumblings of FARC making a come back. Trump held the narco murders in check and, for better or worse, limited them to killing each other in Mexico, now the narco murders are killing nearly a thousand individuals and corruption runs rampant foe the last 4 years. Trump told Belize and Guatemala to settle their land / border beef and got them into the International Court, now even with the case pending, they are on the verge of killing each other again (something that is laughable given the lack of resources Belize has). Trump was on a path to lifting sanctions against Cuba in exchange for their concessions which would have given Cuba an opportunity to make a peaceful, vibrant, economy for their people, but Biden stopped that and they are suffering from an entire 100% electrical grid blackout that has last days, in which time crime has increased, hospitals have no power for patients, and people are fleeing. Panama canal was handed over and them poorly managed, losing billions or revenue generation and causing extreme backlog where cargo could not pass.

Latin Americans know they were better off without Trump, and they are begging for his reelection.

And the people of Venezuela who are suffering under Maduro are praying for Trump to win, knowing that like we did with Panama's Former President Noreaga, we could do with Venezuela and liberate them from their narco-dictator.

The non-criminal migrants from Venezuela that I have met, and I have met many as they land in every country between Colombia and the United States, want to return home as soon as possible, but can't due to Maduro.

Biden is allowing one of the biggest narco terrorists to operate his Cartel with no consequences. Trump, many Venezuelans know, will end his reign of terror and restore a level of peace, if not outright topple and imprison him.

Puerto Rico Landfill Problems: All You Need to Know

According to a study commissioned by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and conducted by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),Puerto Rico could run out of landfill space in 2-4 years.This long-identified capacity issue has been exacerbated by tonnes of debris left behind by two back-to-back hurricanes that devastated the region in 2017.

However, at least two big Puerto Rican waste companies believe that insufficient capacity is not the underlying issue. The largest sites claim that they can probably take in the trash for more than 30 years. They claim that the problems are primarily related to compliance and poor management,which seem to be the result of limited resources. Puerto Rico Landfill Situation

Randy Jensen, president, and CEO of EC Waste says,“There is an absolute landfill crisis in Puerto Rico,but it’s not air space. It is that we still allow 22 unlined dumps to accept waste. While we do have regulations, enforcement on the island is not consistent. I believe more consistent enforcement needs to occur across all waste receiving sites.”

Municipalities own the majority of landfills. And, for the most part, they are allowed to operate as they please, according to Carlos Contreras, CEO, and president of Consolidated Waste Services, which manages five landfills serving 19 jurisdictions. Some of the landfills he manages are lined, but not all.

Operators of pre-Subtitle D sites are permitted by law to add lined cells if the remaining unlined portion of the site is closed. Because it has already been determined that this space complies with a permitted use, expansion must take place within the landfill's original footprint. According to Ivelisse Estrada, president of Ecosystems, Inc., many Puerto Rican operators who are adding lined cells are not closing the unlined portions, and sometimes those cells remain active.

Another issue appears to be the slow pace of administrative progress. Contreras claims he has two landfills that need to be expanded for Subtitle D lined portions and has been waiting for permit approval for four years.

The time lag and issues that allow non-compliant landfills to operate are mainly due to the lack of funding and technical expertise.

According to some of the region's operators, another issue is the uneven distribution of facilities, which has resulted in an uneven playing field. Most landfills in the northeastern part of the island have reached capacity and closed, and this is where the majority of the waste is produced. There are a lot of sites in the southwest, but there isn't a lot of waste. Competition is fierce in the southwest, with operators lowering their tip fees so low that they are forced to invest in resources to meet Subtitle D regulations.

Meanwhile, according to the CEO of EC waste, Puerto Rico has nearly 100 million cubic yards of compliant air space and nearly 40 million cubic yards available for expansion (equating to more than 140 million tonnes total).

The Solution to Puerto Rico Landfill Problem

The EPA's Caribbean Environmental Protection Division is assisting with recovery funding and is collaborating with local and federal partners to identify recycling mechanisms for demolition materials.

The US EPA is assisting the Puerto Rican government as well in reviewing and permitting new compliant landfill cells. The EPA had also issued consent orders to some non-compliant landfills, for example, informing them that they must install interim covers and/or EPA-approved groundwater monitoring systems by specific dates or face penalties.

Smaller landfills that are not in compliance will be forced to close in five to seven years due to overflooding of waste. Contreras believes that there will be more fair competition as a result. Nonetheless, some non-compliant large sites may continue to accept waste in the future.

The United States Department of Justice lodged a complaint in the District of Puerto Rico on February 25, 2021, on behalf of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) demanding that the municipality of Toa Alta stop disposing of solid waste at its landfill and take action to address public health and environmental threats posed by hazardous conditions at the landfill, which is being operated in violation of federal and commonwealth solid waste laws.

The complaint also requests that the court order the municipality of Toa Alta to pay civil penalties for violating an EPA order issued in 2017 that addressed issues at the landfill.

According to the complaint, the landfill poses three major threats:

Toa Alta's municipality is taking insufficient measures to prevent large amounts of leachate – water mixed with harmful pollutants that seep from the landfill – from escaping into nearby neighborhoods, surface waters, and the underlying groundwater aquifer.

The slopes of the landfill in certain areas are unstable and may collapse, potentially endangering people that work at the landfill and residents whose homes are near the landfill's foot.

The Municipality has not consistently placed required soil on top of waste disposed of at the landfill at the end of each day's disposal activities. The use of this soil cover, also known as daily cover, prevents insects, vermin, birds, and trespassers from accessing landfill waste and aids in the prevention of disease spread, such as the dengue and Zika viruses.

Concerning the problems at this landfill, the EPA is in contact with the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources. The EPA is collaborating with the department to improve solid waste management in Puerto Rico.

The establishment and use of landfills is a relatively inexpensive and easy to maintain way to manage a municipality's solid waste. However, the use of landfills could be very costly to health and the environment if they are not properly managed.

There are several ways to dispose of solid waste (e.g. composting of organic material or incineration) and there are also different types of landfills.1. Landfills that comply with environmental regulations tend to cover the soil with plastic sheeting to prevent the percolation of leachate that can carry contaminants that could harm water supplies in aquifers.1,2which are commonly known as linners. This type of landfill is known as a sanitary landfill and is constructed by compacting layers of waste and then capping them with soil before adding the next layer.1. Landfills that do not comply with environmental regulations do not cover the ground with plastic sheeting and do not evaluate the type of waste they receive to divert hazardous waste. These types of landfills are known as open dumps.1,3,4.

Current status of landfills

In Puerto Rico, landfills are mainly used to dispose of solid waste by burying it underground.5. As of 2008, there were 32 landfills in Puerto Rico, most of which did not comply with the regulations established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).5,6 (EPA).There are currently 29 landfills remaining, of which 18 are not in compliance with federal regulations and there is a closure order for 11 of them.3,7,8. Closing landfills complicates solid waste management since Puerto Rico produces between 8,000 to 9,900 tons of solid waste daily.4,6. The passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 increased the generation of garbage reaching landfills.3,9 in turn causing a reduction in the useful life of the landfill sites.3.

Future of waste management

The closure of landfills, the increase in garbage generation and the poor recycling system only aggravates the problem of solid waste management in Puerto Rico. Among the ideas proposed to address the problem is the expansion of existing landfills, but permits have not yet been approved and there are no personnel assigned to the project.3. Landfills have been and continue to be the only way in which the island's garbage problem has been "capped". Strategies such as increasing recycling, composting and waste diversion projects have been considered, but none, so far, have been done on a scale that will have the necessary impact on the generation of solid waste in Puerto Rico.10,11.

Former MI6 agent Christopher Steele updates the Russian threat to Western democracy in his new book "Unredacted"

More than seven years after the Steele dossier was made public, former British intelligence operative Christopher Steele can’t confirm whether its most salacious detail, the “pee tape” involving Donald Trump and Russian prostitutes, is real or not. But Steele, who is an expert on Russia, says with confidence that if Trump wins the 2024 election, he would attempt to “run America in the way that Putin runs Russia.”

I spoke to Steele recently for “Salon Talks” about his new book, “Unredacted: Russia, Trump, and the Fight for Democracy,” where he offered a stark warning for all who treasure our democratic republic. Steele described Vladimir Putin as “basically a gangster” who came to power with his gang and is concerned about controlling power and wealth and making sure that his children, and those of his inner circle, are able to inherit that wealth and carry it forward.

That description also fits our former president, who also hopes to be the next one. So it was deeply concerning to hear Steele say that, if Trump wins, a Putin-esque “oligarchy is what might come to America.” The only thing that might prevent that happening is the allegedly solid checks and balances of our system. But Steele expressed concern that those would not hold up, given that the Supreme Court is controlled by justices likely to side with Trump and Republican members of Congress will do whatever he asks of them.

From a geopolitical point of view, Steele said that we can expect Trump to further undermine our relations with Western democratic allies, while enabling Putin to potentially go further than Ukraine. Steele warned that Putin has “his eye on the Baltic states and Poland” and believes that's where the Russian president will seek to strike next. With Trump as president, Putin’s long-held dream of rebuilding the Soviet Union comes closer to reality.

Outside Puerto Rico's capital,a three-story-high mountain of debris and waste sits smack in the middle of what was a suburban soccer fieldbefore Hurricane Maria devastated the island.

Blue bleachers peek out from the edge of the trash pile, as a line of trucks rolls in to dump even more tree branches and moldy furniture. Workmen wearing yellow hard hats operate diggers to add the new waste to the growing pile in the center of the field.

Puerto Rico is struggling under the weight of its own garbage.Even before Maria hit in September, the Environmental Protection Agency says, most of the island's landfills were filled beyond capacity and that nearly half were under orders to close.

Puerto Rico's Solid Waste Authority estimates that the powerful hurricane created 6.2 million cubic yards of waste and debris. That's enough trash to fill about 43 football stadiums with piles of waste eight stories high, according to a measure used by FEMA.

And it has to go somewhere.

Workmen at the soccer field say the site became a makeshift dump because the landfill for the Toa Baja municipality, near San Juan, is so flooded with trash that wait times to dump debris can be hours. When the soccer site becomes too full, the workers say waste is then moved to the landfill in trucks.

In Maria's wake, local governments are supposed to separate tree branches and other "green waste" for composting so that it doesn't clog up landfills, says Antonio Rios, head of the Solid Waste Authority, the agency that sets the U.S. territory's waste policy.

That composting process isn't happening everywhere, Rios acknowledges. Green debris is still winding up in overflowing landfills across the island, though he says authorities are trying to divert additional material to landfills that have more room. Rios points out that the hurricane also has created other types of waste, things like broken kitchen appliances and food that went rotten because of a lack of electricity.

The landfill in Toa Baja is managed by the private firm Conwaste and takes in trash from at least four municipalities.It has been deeply troubled for years.

The site is supervised by 25-year-old Lionel Ruiz. Last month, he says, it accepted 36,000 tons of waste — that's 70 percent more than the month before the hurricane. Ruiz points to trash-filled trucks waiting in a line that stretches down a dirt road and off into the distance.

"It's more busy than usual," Ruiz says. "You see the line? We never have that line in normal operation."

In 2008, the EPA ordered the Toa Baja landfill to close by 2014 because it posed an "imminent and substantial endangerment to health and the environment." The agency said environmental inspectors found evidence that the landfill did not have a system to control liquid seeping through the garbage pile and into the ground. The agency found that this substance, called leachate, could potentially contaminate a nearby aquifer and wetlands.

In 2012, the EPA permitted the landfill to delay the closure for an unspecified amount of time. It was also allowed to create a smaller area incorporating more environmental precautions — such as a lining to prevent seepage — and begin accepting waste there.

The problems are much the same across the lush tropical island of Puerto Rico. The EPA got directly involved in the island's landfills in 2002, and has since ordered at least 12 of the approximately 29 landfills to close, which can be a years-long process.

It's not immediately clear how many sites — most of which are already at capacity — have actually shut down.

Rios of the Solid Waste Authority estimates that at current recycling rates, all of the island's landfills will be full in 20 to 25 years.

Even the newly added space in Toa Baja's landfill is rapidly filling up, Ruiz says. Before the hurricane hit, he said he thought it would take five years for that area to fill up; Maria has sped up the timeline.

And he's grappling with immediate problems.Birds and insects circle around what is currently a hot, rancid, open dump.

"This is the active area of the landfill, you will see a lot of uncovered material," Ruiz says. Workers would normally cover the expansive mess with earth every day to comply with federal regulations, but he says they haven't been able to do so for a week because the private trucks they use are now being used by FEMA.

The uncovered mounds of rotting garbage is upsetting to people down the hill in the neighborhood of Candelaria, people like 83-year-old Angelo Fernandez."The smell, the stink!" he says, totally exasperated. "Every time they leave it open, the smell is awful."

In his 41 years living here, he's seen mountains of trash rise from the ground, parts of which are now covered with dirt and vegetation. But the waste lies just inches under the surface.

"It is getting bigger, it is getting bigger and bigger— that was never this height — never," Fernandez says. "All that mountain you see there is garbage!"

He says people living in Candelaria suffer from asthma and other breathing problems because of the landfill. They cough a lot.

Actually closing a landfill is expensive, costing approximately $200,000 per acre, according to Rios. Puerto Rico is struggling with more than $120 billion in debt and pension obligations, and has filed for a bankruptcy-like procedure — and that was before the hurricane.

The EPA has acknowledged that the budget crisis is making it more difficult for local governments on the island to handle the garbage problem. The municipalities "have always had limited funds to implement the environmental and engineering controls required to improve, and ultimately close, the landfills," the agency says. And Puerto Rico's Environmental Quality Board hasn't required municipalities to set money aside in case their landfills needed to close.

Another issue, Rios says, is that some of the landfills now under closure orders aren't charging garbage trucks high enough fees to generate the money to actually shut down.

Ultimately, the troubled landfill system is "a public health issue and it's about to collapse really soon," says Agustín Carbo Lugo, former head of the Solid Waste Authority. He says Puerto Rico also needs to think beyond landfills rather than just open new ones. Recycling rates on the island are about half of what they are on the U.S. mainland.

"We need to look for different alternatives," he says, particularly because Puerto Rico has limited space. That might include a number of other waste management techniques such as "waste-to-energy," which uses methods like incineration to produce electricity and heat.

Most importantly, Carbo Lugo says, "people need to change their behavior and it's quite complex, how you change that in a small island. But it can be done — it just, people need to understand what's at stake here."

Those stakes are clear to Fernandez, who lives next to the landfill. He says that if it closed for good, "I think it would be a better place to live. I know it would be."

Delta Air Lines on Friday filed a lawsuit against CrowdStrike in Georgia, accusing the security software vendor of breach of contract and negligence after an outage in July that brought down millions of computers and prompted 7,000 flight cancelations.

Other airlines recovered more quickly than Atlanta-based Delta, which said the incident reduced revenue by $380 million and brought $170 million in costs. The flawed software update affected computers running Microsoft’s Windows operating system.

Days after the outage, Delta hired David Boies of law firm Boies Schiller Flexner to seek damages from CrowdStrike and Microsoft. Delta asked for damages to cover its losses, along with litigation costs and punitive damages.

“CrowdStrike caused a global catastrophe because it cut corners, took shortcuts, and circumvented the very testing and certification processes it advertised, for its own benefit and profit,” Delta said in its complaint. “If CrowdStrike had tested the Faulty Update on even one computer before deployment, the computer would have crashed.”

Delta had disabled automatic updates from CrowdStrike but this one reached its computers anyway, the airline said in the suit.Delta claimed that ==CrowdStrike’s Falcon software created and exploited an unauthorized door in Windows that the airline said it never would have allowed.

“The havoc that was created deserves, in my opinion, to be fully compensated for,” Delta CEO Ed Bastian told CNBC in an interview earlier this month.

CEO George Kurtz has apologized for the incident, and the company has committed to changing its practices to prevent similar events. In August, CrowdStrike loweredits full-year guidance because of a customer commitment package related to the outage.

“While we aimed to reach a business resolution that puts customers first, Delta has chosen a different path,” a CrowdStrike spokesperson told CNBC in an email. “Delta’s claims are based on disproven misinformation, demonstrate a lack of understanding of how modern cybersecurity works, and reflect a desperate attempt to shift blame for its slow recovery away from its failure to modernize its antiquated IT infrastructure.”

Microsoft discussed various potential enhancementswith CrowdStrike and other endpoint security software sellers at a summit in September.

Early voting began in Georgia nearly two weeks ago.

CLARKSTON, Ga.—The sun was shining. Bruce Springsteen was strumming an acoustic guitar. Yet beneath the peaceful surface, the stadium packed with thousands of Democrats practically thrummed with anxiety.

“I’m honestly legit kind of terrified,” said Rebekah Williams, a 46-year-old Atlanta resident wearing a T-shirt that read “pro science, pro choice, pro wrestling.” The thought of trying to get through the next couple of weeks until the election had her on edge, not to mention what might happen afterward. To get through it, she was counting on “a lot of marijuana.”

With little more than a week to go in what could be the closest presidential election in American history, the nation is on edge. Partisans on both sides are paralyzed with suspense and apprehension as they look to white-knuckle it through the coming days. The candidates have amped up their appeals to an apocalyptic degree as the campaigns frantically work to turn out the vote. As Donald Trump and Kamala Harris both campaigned in this crucial swing state, voters broadly said this election feels different than those that came before—less a regular democratic exercise than a national panic attack, a twilight clash that could end democracy for good.

“I can remember elections where it felt like things would be OK regardless of the outcome,” Phillip Appiah, a 50-year-old contractor from Stone Mountain, said as he waited in line for a food truck on the stadium turf. “That feeling is absent this time.”

Bruce Springsteen was among celebrities appearing before a packed stadium Thursday at a rally for Kamala Harris in suburban Atlanta.

The angst is widespread across the political spectrum. In a Wall Street Journal poll released last week, 87% of voters said they believe America will suffer permanent damage if their candidate loses. Among Harris’s voters, 57% said they would feel “frightened” if Trump is elected, while 47% of Trump voters said they would feel frightened if Harris wins; smaller percentages expected to feel the milder reactions of anger or disappointment. At least half of voters said they think violence is likely if either Trump or Harris wins, and 53% say America’s divisions will keep growing regardless of the election’s outcome.

The same poll found Trump narrowly ahead within the margin of error—essentially a tie, similar to the results of numerous other recent national and swing-state polls. Even the polling guru Nate Silver, who rose to fame on predicting the outcome of elections, says he can’t predict which way this one will go (though his “gut saysDonald Trump”). It is anybody’s guess, as if the nation’s deep divisions had come to rest in a tense and unstable stalemate.

The political professionals don’t know what to think. In interviews, Democratic and Republican strategists oscillated between confidence and uncertainty as they considered the many factors that could shift the result of a race on a knife’s edge. Are the polls undercounting Trump’s voters as they have in the past—or overcounting them, as pollsters try to compensate? Could there be an undetected surge of new women voters animated by abortion—or of men drawn to Trump’s unconventional appeals? Would Democrats’ superior field organization put them over the top, or would Elon Musk’s sudden investment do the same for the GOP? In a race this close, nearly anything—a weather event in Wisconsin, a late-breaking scandal—could be decisive.

Many Republicans are projecting confidence, but privately admit they can’t be sure. “It wouldn’t shock me if there’s some kind of sleeping giant out there,” said one Republican strategist—an under-the-radar electoral force that polls aren’t picking up. “It wouldn’t shock me if Trump ends up overperforming expectations in key voter groups. I also wouldn’t be shocked by Harris winning every swing state.”

“I don’t have emotions anymore. I can’t let politics make me emotional,” said Lauren Groh-Wargo, a Georgia Democratic strategist who runs the Fair Fight Action voter-mobilization group founded by former gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams. “These races are so close, you just have to do what you can and focus on what you can control.”

A Democratic lobbyist in Washington put it more succinctly: “There are not enough gummies I can take to soothe the angst!”…

Sometimes a river of hot gas flows over your head. In this case the river created a Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement (STEVE) that glowed bright red, white, and pink. Details of how STEVEs work remain a topic of research, but recent evidence holds that their glow results from a fast-moving river of hot ions flowing over a hundred kilometers up in the Earth's atmosphere: the ionosphere. The more expansive dull red glow might be related to the flowing STEVE, but alternatively might be a Stable Auroral Red (SAR) arc, a more general heat-related glow. The featured picture, taken earlier this month in Côte d'Opale, France, is a wide-angle digital composite made as the STEVE arc formed nearly overhead. Although the apparition lasted only a few minutes, this was long enough for the quick-thinking astrophotographer to get in the picture - can you find him?

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a complaint Feb. 25 on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the District of Puerto Rico that calls for the municipality of Toa Alta to stop disposing of solid waste at its landfill and take steps to address public health and environmental threats posed by dangerous conditions at the landfill, which is being operated in violation of federal and commonwealth solid waste laws.

“The Toa Alta landfill poses a significant threat to the health of nearby communities and the local groundwater aquifer, and the municipality should stop disposing of waste there immediately,” said EPA acting Regional Administrator Walter Mugdan. “The many problems at the landfill are well documented and the municipality must take steps to correct them to better safeguard local communities and the environment.”

The complaint also asks the court to order the municipality of Toa Alta to pay civil penalties for its violations of a 2017 EPA order that addressed problems at the landfill.

The complaint cites three central threats posed by the landfill:

The municipality of Toa Alta is taking inadequate action to prevent large quantities of leachate from escaping into nearby neighborhoods, surface waters and the underlying groundwater aquifer.

The landfill’s slopes in certain areas are not stable and may collapse, potentially endangering people working at the landfill and residents whose homes are near the foot of the landfill.

The municipality has not consistently been placing required soil on top of the waste disposed at the landfill at the end of each day’s disposal activities. Application of this daily cover cuts off access to landfill waste by insects, vermin, birds and trespassers and helps prevent the spread of disease, such as dengue and Zika viruses.

EPA is in communication with the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources concerning the problems at this landfill. EPA is coordinating with the department in efforts to improve solid waste management in Puerto Rico.

Experts teach Puerto Ricans about waste management

Puerto Rico is facing a dirty dilemma:The island is literally running out of places to put its garbage.

Its existing landfills are filling up at an astonishing clip, and there's nowhere else to put more. There were 64 landfills on the 3,515-square-mile island in 1994; by 2020, there are expected to be just four.

TheCornell Waste Management Institute (CWMI) has teamed up with the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems to help address the problem.

CWMI director and extension associate Jean Bonhotal and extension support specialist Mary Schwarz recently conducted trainings in Puerto Rico with 50 college students, who are now spreading the gospel of reduce, reuse and recycle to elementary schools, groups and clubs across the island.

Recycling rates on the island are very low, Bonhotal said. Only 10 percent of waste is recycled on the island, with 90 percent going to landfills, compared with 54 percent going to landfills in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

"Up to 60 percent of the waste stream in Puerto Rico is made up of food scraps and other organic materials that could be composted on site or in a municipal facility," Bonhotal said. "The infrastructure just hasn't been built there."

According to an analysis by Syracuse University, Puerto Ricans also produce more garbage 3.9 pounds per person per day, on average compared with 3.15 pounds on the mainland.

The reason, Bonhotal said, is because there is no tradition, information or infrastructure to encourage waste reduction in Puerto Rico.

Thus, the Cornell trainings addressed waste management and led a hands-on composting workshop, building worm bins, wire bins and a used-pallet bin. They also included a composting curriculum developed by CWMI in both English and Spanish, for students in grades K-12.

"There's a big push to do waste reduction and diversion," she said of Puerto Rican communities.

While the original goal was to train 10 college students, 50 showed up, from six universities across the island.

Bonhotal said the college students began working in schools even before the group had left Puerto Rico.

"We expect the ripple effect from this will be more than just getting this information to the schools," Bonhotal said. "The 50 students who have been trained will go home and have a compost bin in their yards. The schoolchildren will go home and show their parents. That's what we hope for."

The project was part of a larger grant awarded to Syracuse University from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

President Biden's last Diwali celebration to feature NASA astronaut Sunita Williams

President Joe Biden will celebrate Diwali at the White House on Monday evening with a large gathering of Indian Americans from across the country.

The event will feature a video message from Sunita “Suni” Williams, a distinguished NASA astronaut and retired Navy Captain.

Williams recorded the greeting from the International Space Station, where she assumed command in September, according to the White House.

“Continuing a tradition from previous years, the President will light a Diya lamp in the Blue Room before his remarks,” the White House said.

After this he would deliver remarks before a gathering of Indian Americans, for whom he is hosting a reception.

This would be President Biden’s last Diwali reception at the White House as he is not running for the presidential election.

“Among the President’s introductions will be a video message from Sunita “Suni” Williams, a decorated NASA astronaut and retired Navy Captain.

She recorded a video greeting from the International Space Station, where she took over as Commander in September,” the White House said.

“Suni is a practising Hindu and has previously sent Diwali greetings from the ISS to people across the globe.

She has also brought multiple Indian/Hindu cultural items—including samosas and copies of Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita—with her to space in celebration of her heritage,” it said.

“Nootana, a classical South Asian dance and music ensemble based in Washington, DC, will provide musical entertainment for guests, in addition to the Marine Corps Band,” said the White House.

Tommy Robinson jailed after admitting contempt of court by repeating false allegation about Syrian refugee

Far-right activist Tommy Robinson has been jailed for 18 months after he repeated false allegations about a Syrian refugee schoolboy.

The 41-year-old, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, admitted at Woolwich Crown Court to breaching an injunction made after he was successfully sued for libel in 2021.

Those who commit contempt of court can be jailed for up to two years, fined, or both.

A High Court order in 2021 had barred Robinson from repeating libellous allegations against Jamal Hijazi who had successfully sued him for libel.

The Solicitor General issued two contempt claims against Robinson earlier this year, claiming he "knowingly" breached the order on multiple occasions.

Robinson, who founded the far-right English Defence League, appeared in the dock today after being remanded in custody on Friday, wearing a grey suit and waistcoat with no tie.

NASA's astronauts aboard the International Space Station have been told to prepare for an urgent evacuation amid growing safety concerns.

The US space agency and its Russian counterpart, Roscomos, are tracking 50 'areas of concern' related to a growing leak aboard the station.

NASA is now calling the cracks in a Russian service module a 'top safety risk' - escalating the threat rating to five out of five.

Astronauts have been warned to stay in the American section when the module is open so they can be close to their spacecraft in case of an emergency evacuation.

Although officials have been aware of the issue since 2019, the exact source of the leak is still unknown.

All potential cracks have been covered with 'a combination of sealant and patches' but NASA warned that the leak reached its fastest rate yet in April this year.

Concerns over the station's safety are now so high that NASA has negotiated with Roscomos to only open the hatch when absolutely necessary and to keep it sealed in the evenings.

And that's not the only cause for concern, as the space agency has warned that the ISS is at risk of being pelted with micro-meteors and space debris.

The air leak is located in the Russian Zvezda Service Module Transfer Tunnel which was installed in 2000 and is used to house life support equipment and to access a Russian cargo dock.

In 2019 it was noted that the module had begun to leak a small amount of air through an unidentified crack.

However, despite efforts to seal the module, the amount of air escaping the station has only increased over the last five years.

In February this year, NASA was forced to hold a press conference on the issue as the amount of air escaping temporarily increased from 0.2 lbs per day (0.09 kg) to 2.4 lbs (1.08 kg) per day.

A report published in September by NASA's Office of the Inspector General (OIG) confirmed that the leak then hit record rates in April - losing 3.7 lbs (1.68 kg) of air every day.

This has prompted the space agency to escalate the threat rating to the highest level and consider plans for evacuation.

In May and June, NASA officials travelled to Russia to discuss 'heightened concerns' over the seemingly growing leak.

Speaking to the Washington Post, NASA associate administrator Jim Free says: 'We have conveyed the seriousness of the leaks multiple times, including when I was in Russia earlier this year.
