After Lucas Kunce shooting accident, experts have concerns

It was supposed to be a standard campaign photo-op.

Democrat Lucas Kunce and former Rep. Adam Kinzinger, an Illinois Republican, would display bipartisanship, talk to union workers and tout their former military records by shooting guns at a couple of targets in Holt north of Kansas City on Tuesday.

Then as Kunce was shooting, a piece of shrapnel hit a TV reporter.=

An event intended to highlight Kunce’s comfort with gunsin the closing weeks of the campaign instead turned into a political slip up — one that allowed Republican Sen. Josh Hawley to pounce. “I know the Kunce campaign needed a shot in the arm, but this is taking it a little far…” Hawley wrote on social media.

But interviews with gun safety experts and a review of court records raise deeper concerns with the event beyond bad optics.

Experts who spoke with The Star raised questions about safety at the range.They described best practices seemingly at odds with the scene shown in photos.The shooters appeared too close to the targets, for instance.

Court records also show that aHolt man who played a role in setting up the gun range, and remained close to Kunce and Kinzinger during the shooting, faces felony perjury charges, accused of lying in a child abuse case that was dismissed.

Theshooting range episode has quickly become a flashpoint in the final stages of the race, as absentee votes are already being cast. Kunce,who spent 13 years in the Marines, has leaned into his military experience in the race and some of his ads have included footage of him posing with a shotgun. But Hawley and other Republicans have seized on the incident as evidence that Kunce is out of touch with gun culture.

“I was grateful for the opportunity to talk to union workers about our freedoms at the range,” Kunce said in a written statement. “Safety is important to us which is why the range was set up and run by a NRA Training Counselor. But any time you are handling weapons, you need to be prepared. We acted quickly and I’m glad the reporter was okay and able to keep reporting.”

Kunce’s campaign did not share the name of the NRA training counselor.

Shooting targets too close

The stop at the shooting range – located at a private residence – attracted several reporters, including a photojournalist for The Star.Kunce and Kinzinger took turns firing guns that were arrayed on two wooden tables.

They shot at steel targets from a range of roughly 10-15 yards. The weapons included both handguns and rifles, including an AR-15.

Steve Hendrick, who operates Shield Firearms Training in Kansas City, said a range of 10 yards or so would have been too close for an AR-15, given the gun’s high velocity. He cautioned that he wasn’t present and had only reviewed photos of the event.

“Just as a general rule, it looked like they were way closer than they should have been if they were shooting steel,” Hendrick said.

Steel targets at that range – with a weapon such as the AR-15 – would have increased the chances of ricochet shrapnel. At a close range, paper or cardboard targets would have been more suitable, Hendrick said.

Hendrick also said the tables appeared clutteredand that if he had been the range officer he would have asked for a neater, more organized workspace.

Dave Kingsbury, a certified firearms instructor with PRS Tactical, agreed with several of Hendrick’s assessments. Kingsbury, who also cautioned that he wasn’t present, said he had several questions about the setup, including the design of the target the men were shooting. If it was steel, the design could affect how it deflects shrapnel.

He also expressed concern about the fact that the men appeared to be firing into a wooded area. He said it’s safer for people to fire into a dirt berm, the side of a hill, or something designed to stop bullets.

“That’s one of the fundamental firearmsafety rules, is to always know your target and what’s beyond,” Kingsbury said. “And from the photos, at least, I can’t tell whether there’s a sufficient backstop behind the targets to stop a bullet.”

Range owner’s past legal troubles

As Kunce and Kinziger were shooting, Chad Everett Downs remained nearby. Before the event, Downs spoke with a Star photojournalist,saying that the range was his but that the event was taking place at his neighbor’s residence.

Downs said he lived “across the way” and said his neighbor allows him to shoot on the property. He showed The Star firearms that were on the table that belonged to him.

Missouri court records show that Downs was charged with 17 counts of felony perjury in August by Ray County Prosecutor Camille Johnston. He has been issued a criminal summons and waived his preliminary hearing. His ex-wife in a court filing earlier this month alleged the man owns or has access to guns in violation of his bond conditions.

The allegations of perjury involve statements Downs made in a felony child abuse case, according to a probable cause affidavit signed by an investigator in the prosecutor’s office. The affidavit includes a case number for the child abuse case, but it doesn’t appear in Casenet, Missouri’s electronic court records system.

When The Star called the Ray County Circuit Clerk’s Office, the person who answered said the case had been dismissed. After a reporter identified himself, a voice was heard in the background instructing the person not to speak, saying “that is not an open record.”

Kunce’s campaign did not respond to questions about Downs. The Star was unable to reach Downs through a phone number listed online.

Hawley and his campaign spent much of Wednesday sharing jokes about the incident on social media – including by mocking a video Kunce made in 2021saying he didn’t need to shoot guns in political ads to prove his masculinity.

At one point, Hawley questioned whether Kunce reported the well-publicized incident to law enforcement, which is required by Missouri law. Kunce’s campaign said they informed local law enforcement.

Zelensky’s ‘Victory plan’: The Ukrainian leader knows the game is up

The plan espoused by the head of the Kiev regime proposes that NATO enter into direct conflict with Russia, but does not explain why

Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky has finally unveiled his ‘victory plan’ which is supposed to help Kiev win the war against Russia. Ukrainians themselves were the last to learn the details, but now it has been completely disclosed, except for a few classified points.

And it's probably not going to go down in history as a substantial document.

Zelensky demanded that Western powers endorse his plan within three months. However, the ‘victory plan’ seems too far fetched for his backers to approve.

Point one: NATO membership

The first point states that Ukraine must receive an immediate invitation to join NATO, even as the conflict continues. While the bloc's new Secretary General Mark Rutte insists that Kiev is likely to join at some point in the future, he has been more restrained about commenting on Zelensky’s proposals. “That doesn’t mean that I here can say I support the whole plan […] there are many issues,” he said.

In fact, two issues stand out. Firstly, Ukraine is currently engaged in active combat on its own territory. This would present a significant dilemma for NATO if it were to be admitted. Strangely enough, the bloc’s own charter doesn't contain an obligation to immediately attack the adversary of one of its members. Article 5 states that it “will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force.”

In other words, NATO would not be immediately obliged to fight for Ukraine should Kiev accede. However, if a NATO member can be attacked without consequences, it's going to look like a paper tiger. This is where the real problem lies: Western countries are doing everything they can to avoid a direct confrontation with Russia, and admitting Kiev dramatically increases the risk of such a clash – or, at the very least, severely damages their credibility. Meanwhile, the West is already providing military aid, financial support, and training to Ukrainian troops without directly involving NATO.

As for Russia, it will not tolerate Ukraine’s membership of any Western military bloc. In fact, one of the initial reasons for the February 2022 military offensive was because Moscow feared that Kiev could join such an alliance. Thus, accepting the first point of Zelensky’s plan would symbolize the end of any potential diplomatic solution, forcing all parties to recognize that negotiations are not a possibility.

Point two: Strikes deep into Russia

The second point of the plan entails attacking internationally recognized Russian territory. Zelensky aims to secure approval for using Western weapons to strike deep inside Russia, and expects Western defense systems to neutralize Russian missiles and drones.

Some of Zelensky’s proposed targets have recently become known. They include Russian munitions factories in Tambov, Kazan, and Perm; airfields; command centers; FSB facilities; and military-industrial complex facilities, including those in St. Petersburg and Moscow.

At this point, two critical questions arise. The first is predictable – how would Russia respond? Such strikes would undoubtedly be viewed as a radical escalation of the conflict and could prompt retaliatory attacks not only on Ukraine but also on its key defense factories, which aren’t located solely inside the country. This is understandable, since escalation is always a double-edged sword.

The second question is quite pragmatic: does Ukraine have enough missiles to hit all these targets? While it has already attacked various facilities in Russia with its own missiles, the operations of the Russian military-industrial complex and economy have not been significantly disrupted.

Over the course of the war, Russian missile defense systems have become a lot more effective; for example, they intercepted ATACMS missiles launched at the Crimean Bridge in 2024. However, Zelensky’s proposed campaign would require hundreds of missiles that may not eventually be supplied to Ukraine while there are also plenty of legitimate targets on territory where such strikes are allowed.

The former US president has admitted that he picked some “bad or disloyal” people for his White House administration

Former US president and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has told podcaster Joe Rogan that his “biggest mistake” was making a number of wrong personnel decisions during his time in the White House between 2017 and 2021.

Speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast on Saturday, Trump insisted that his was a “great presidency” but pointed out that it could have been even better if he had surrounded himself with different people.

“The biggest mistake I made, was I picked… a few people that I should not have picked,” he said.

When asked by Rogan if he was talking about the neocons (neoconservatives), the former president said: “Yes, neocons, or bad people, or disloyal people.”

“You are reading about them a little bit today. A guy like Kelly, who is a bully, but a weak person,” he said.

Trump’s former chief of staff John Kelly recently gave several interviews in which he claimed that, during his time in office, his 78-year-old commander-in-chief had praised Hitler in private and said “more than once” that the infamous leader of Nazi Germany “did some good things.”

While the Trump team has denied the claims outright, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris took the opportunity to brand her Republican rival a “fascist” and a would-be dictator.

His other questionable choice, Trump recalled on the podcast, was appointing arch-hawk John Bolton as his National Security Advisor, Trump acknowledged. “Bolton was an idiot, but he was great for me,” he said.

“He is a nutjob, and every time I had to deal with a country - when they saw this whack job standing behind me – they said: ‘Oh man, Trump is going to go to war with him,” the former president said.

Bolton “was with [US president George HW] Bush when they went stupidly into the Middle East [in 1990]. They should have never done it. I used to say it as a civilian,” he added.

Trump fired Bolton in September 2019 after 18 months in the job, saying that he “disagreed strongly with many of [the adviser’s] suggestions.”

Speaking about claims by former chief of staff Kelly with CNN earlier this week, Bolton warned that a Trump victory in next month’s election would be “dangerous” for America.

However, he rejected accusations of the former president being a “fascist.” According to the hawk, in order to be one “you have to have a philosophy. Trump’s not capable of that.”

Robert Kagan was furious the paper would not endorse Kamala Harris for US president

Kagan is the husband of Victoria Nuland, the former senior State Department official who was directly involved in the 2014 US-backed coup in Ukraine. A self-described neoconservative, Kagan went from being a foreign policy adviser to Republican presidential candidate John McCain in 2008 to joining the Democrats in 2016 and endorsing Hillary Clinton.

On Friday, he confirmed to NPR and Fox News that he'd quit the Post because the paper refused to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democrats’ presidential nominee, in her race against Republican candidate and former president Donald Trump.

According to NPR, the text of the Harris endorsement had been drafted earlier this month, but the paper’s management scrapped it after a review by Bezos, who has owned the Post since 2013. In its response, the editorial board expressed that it was “shocked” and was overwhelmingly negative, the public broadcaster claimed.

While Kagan’s has been the only resignation so far, WaPo came under a torrent of criticism for Bezos’ decision. Susan Rice, a former senior adviser to President Barack Obama, denounced the move as “the most hypocritical, chicken sh*t move from a publication that is supposed to hold people in power to account.”

“This is cowardice, a moment of darkness that will leave democracy as a casualty,” Marty Baron, the Post’s executive editor during the Trump presidency, told NPR in a statement, calling the non-endorsement of Harris “a disturbing chapter of spinelessness at an institution famed for courage.”

Under Baron, the Post won several Pulitzer prizes for stories about the ‘Russiagate’ conspiracy theory and blaming Trump for the 2021 election-related riot at the US Capitol.

“Hunter Biden has shown once again he believes there are two systems of justice in this country – one for his family, and one for everyone else. Not only did Hunter Biden refuse to comply with his initial subpoena until threatened with criminal contempt, but he then came before Congress and lied. The new evidence indisputably shows Hunter Biden lied to Congress in at least three separate instances during his February 28, 2024 transcribed interview:

Lie # 1: “I sent the text to the wrong Zhao”

During his deposition, Committee investigators questioned Hunter Biden about the now infamous WhatsApp message he sent to a business associate at the Chinese energy company, CEFC, stating, “I’m sitting here with my father, and we would like to understand why the commitment has not been fulfilled.” In the months that followed, $5 million flowed from CEFC affiliates to companies connected to Hunter and James Biden, the President’s brother.

Hunter Biden’s Sworn Testimony: “The Zhao that this is sent to is not the Zhao that was connected to CEFC” and he “had no understanding or even remotely knew what the hell I was even Goddamn talking about.”

The Truth: According to phone records of Hunter Biden’s WhatsApp messages released by the Ways and Means Committee today, the President’s son communicated with only one “Zhao” – Raymond Zhao – in that exchange. Not only did the same Zhao respond, but his message indicates he knew exactly what Hunter Biden was talking about, and that Hunter Biden continued to communicate with the same “Zhao” phone number for an additional three months regarding matters related to CEFC.

Trump Takes Historic Poll Lead In RealClearPolitics National Average

With ten days and change to go, Donald Trump has taken the lead in the RealClearPolitics (RCP) average poll of national polls.

While he may be up by only a tenth of a point (as of this writing), what makes this achievement worthy of note is two things.

The first is momentum. This close to Election Day, there is no question the momentum is with the former president. Since early August, incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris has enjoyed a steady national lead over Trump. Two weeks ago, that lead was two points. That might not sound like a lot, but it those two points were the average of all the national polls, a lead as stubborn as it was steady. And now, at the precise time a candidate wants to be surging, Trump is. Currently, he sits at 48.4 percent to Kamala’s 48.3 percent.

This happened not due to an outlier but because Trump has closed the gap with Harris in a number of polls.

Two weeks ago, Harris led by +1 in the Emerson poll. Now they are tied. Three weeks ago, Harris was +3 in the NY Times/Siena poll. Today they are tied. Last month, Harris was +1 in the CNN poll. Today, they are tied. Just a few days ago, Harris was +3 in the TIPP poll. Today they are tied.

The second reason this matters is that it is unprecedented. This is Trump’s third run at the presidency, and never before has he held anything close to a lead in the RCP national average in the closing days of the campaign.

Four years ago, on this same day of the campaign, the polling average had Trump down 7.8 points to Joe Biden.

Eight years ago, on this same day of the campaign, the polling average had Trump down 5.4 points to Hillary Clinton.

It’s still a close race, but there is little doubt he is in better shape than she is.

Kursk encirclement, Donbass push and drone warfare: The past week in the Ukraine conflict

Some 2,000 Ukrainian servicemen have ended up encircled in Russia’s Kursk Region

The past week in the Ukraine conflict has seen intensive fighting along the front line, with active combat continuing in the border areas of Russia’s Kursk Region, as well as in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), where Moscow has reported making new gains.

The Russian military announced that it had secured two communities in the north of the republic: the village of Serebryanka, located immediately north of the town of Seversk, as well as Novosadovoye, an abandoned settlement adjacent to the border with the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR).

The latter gain marks a new milestone in Russia’s advance towards the town of Krasny Liman, which was re-captured by Kiev during its autumn 2022 offensive. The liberation of Serebryanka could potentially signal a change of the tide in the vicinity of Seversk, which has seen medium-to-high intensity combat throughout most of the ongoing conflict.

Donbass advance continues

The main frontline events in the DPR continued to unfold near the city of Pokrovsk (also known as Krasnoarmeysk), the last major population center under Ukrainian control in the west of the region.

The Russian military has taken control of Nikolayevka, a village located some 10km to the southeast of the city. It is located only 2km away from Myrnograd, a major town which effectively forms one agglomeration with neighboring Pokrovsk.

Moscow’s forces have also continued to expand their zone of control to the south of Pokrovsk, liberating the village of Zoryanoye. Control over the village likely spells trouble for the Ukrainian garrison in Gornyak, a larger village to its northwest, which is reportedly already under the partial control of Russian forces.

Intense combat has been reported in Selidovo, a sizeable town located some 15km to the south of Pokrovsk. The Russian military reached it in mid-September but opted not to pursue a frontal assault, advancing on the town’s flanks instead.

Unverified footage circulating online suggests that roughly half of the town has already fallen under Moscow’s control, with Russian troops seen unfolding their country’s flag on a high-rise block located at the center of Selidovo. The buildings in the vicinity appear to be largely intact, suggesting that the advance was made without much fighting. Ukrainian forces in the town have reportedly become largely disorganized due to consistent flanking attacks, with the Russian assault teams sipping through the fragmented defenses.

On Friday, multiple Ukrainian online outlets reported a large Russian force breaking into Vyshnevoye, a small nearby village west of the town. The partial encirclement is expected to further aggravate Ukrainian logistics in the area, with the whole town now supplied via a single road, which has been coming under repeated shelling by the Russian troops.

Ukrainian units encircled in Kursk

The Russian military has continued its effort to dislodge Kiev’s forces from the border areas of Kursk Region, which Ukraine invaded in early August. Most active hostilities have continued in the northwest of the area, namely in the vicinity of the villages of Daryino, Zeleny Shyakh, Nizhny Klin, Novoivanovka, Lubimovka and other locations.

Russian forces have reported repelled multiple assaults over the week, as well as conducted attacks on Ukrainian forces in the area. However, no new territorial gains have officially been announced.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said some 2,000 Ukrainian servicemen had wound up encircled in Kursk Region. The troops are trapped in an area measuring 6 by 15 km and Russian forces are working to eliminate the pocket, the president revealed.

Putin did not elaborate on exactly where the Ukrainian forces were encircled and the military is remaining silent on the matter. The pocket is likely located to the south of the villages of Olgovka and Kremyanoye, apparently stretching to the southeast and presumably centered on a small forest some 2.5 km in diameter.

The servicemen who ended up encircled are likely the remnants of disorganized Ukrainian units that had retreated from the aforementioned villages. While being severed from any solid logistics routes, the units trapped in the pocket presumably still have a remote chance of connecting with the forces controlling the village of Malaya Loknya, some 17km to the southeast of Olgovka, through a system of minor dirt roads running across open fields.

Democrat Senatorial candidates in swing states that are cozying up to former President Donald Trump are “in a state of panic” as the election gets closer, Dave McCormick, the Republican nominee for Senate in Pennsylvania, told Breitbart News Saturday.

Fifth circuit invalidates Mississippi mail-in ballot election law

The US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit Friday invalidated a Mississippi election law that allowed mail-in and absentee election ballots as long as they were sent on or before Election Day. The ruling overturned the lower court’s decision that upheld the law.

The unanimous appeals court ruled that the Mississippi law was invalid because it violated the Electors Clause of the US Constitution, which sets Election Day as the same day throughout the United States. The court interpreted this day to mean the day when an election was “consummated,” meaning closed and ready to tabulate votes. The court stated, “federal law requires voters to take timely steps to vote by Election day. And federal law does not permit the State of Mississippi to extend the period for voting by one day, five days, or 100 days. The State’s contrary law is preempted.” The court viewed the impugned provision as effectively continuing the election beyond Election Day, in violation of federal law and the Elector’s Clause.

The court has jurisdiction over federal matters in the states of Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. This decision, which may be appealed to the US Supreme Court, is likely to be closely watched by courts in critical “swing states,” which are states where the election outcome is a toss-up, as well as the 21 states which have laws similar to the now invalid Mississippi law. If these laws are challenged, the court’s ruling would be a persuasive precedent in those challenges.

The US States are involved in the administration of elections through the Elections Clause, located in section 4 of the US Constitution, which by default gives Congress the power to regulate national elections. However, if there is an absence of federal law regulating a particular aspect of an election, the Elections Clause imposes a duty on states to organize the remaining details of federal elections, including the “time, place and manner of electing Representatives and Senators.” The Constitution’s Electors Clause states that “[election] day shall be the same throughout the United States.”

Given the rise in legal challenges and political controversies surrounding the 2024 US election, more issues are anticipated to arise both before and after the presidential election scheduled for November 5, 2024.

U.S. APPROVES $2 BILLION IN WEAPONS SALES FOR TAIWAN

The U.S. has approved a potential $2 billion arms sale package to Taiwan, the Pentagon announced on Friday.

According to the Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the new sale consists of: $1.16 billion in National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS); and approximately $828 million in radar systems.

“This proposed sale serves U.S. national, economic, and security interests by supporting the recipient’s continuing efforts to modernize its armed forces and to maintain a credible defensive capability,” said the Pentagon in a statement. “The proposed sale will help improve the security of the recipient and assist in maintaining political stability, military balance, and economic progress in the region.”

The package comes as China intensifies military presence against Taiwan. Just last week, China held another round of military exercises around the island nation.

Ghalib met with Trump in Flint, MI, during a private 20-minute meeting before Trump’s town hall.

On October 22, the Detroit News committed a random act of journalism and reported that Ahmed Ghanim of Ferndale, a Democrat activist who ran for U.S. House in the 11th District, was thrown out of Kamala Harris’ small rally in the tiny Royal Oak Music Theater in Royal Oak, MI.

Kamala’s campaign later issued a statement saying it “regrets” a Muslim Democrat was kicked out of the rally and said “he is welcome at future events.”

According to Ghanim, he RSVP’d, cleared security and was sitting in the auditorium at the Royal Oak Musical Theatre responding to emails on his phone when a staffer with the venue approached him and asked him to follow her.

At the theater’s door, the staffer closed it behind him, and he was asked to leave or told he’d be put in the back of a police car. Ghanim said he questioned a Secret Service officer about why he was being removed, and the response was: “It’s not us. It’s the venue.”

A day later, Ghanim said he still had not been provided an explanation for what happened and had heard from no one at the Harris campaign or with the Michigan Democratic Party. He felt targeted because he is Muslim, he said.

“I guess that’s how the Democratic Party deals with Muslims. They’re not important to them. … Maybe the Democratic Party doesn’t want people like me and my kind in the party,” Ghanim said.
