Defense Secretary Revokes Plea Deal for Accused Sept. 11 Plotters

Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III assumed direct oversight of the case and effectively put the death penalty back on the table.

Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III on Friday overruled the overseer of the war court at Guantánamo Bay and revoked a plea agreement reached earlier this week with the accused mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and two alleged accomplices.

The Pentagon announced the decision with the release of a memorandum relieving the senior official at the Defense Department responsible for military commissions of her oversight of the capital case against Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and his alleged accomplices for the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York City, at the Pentagon and in a Pennsylvania field.

The overseer, retired Brig. Gen. Susan K. Escallier, signed a pretrial agreement on Wednesday with Mr. Mohammed, Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi that exchanged guilty pleas for sentences of at most life in prison. In taking away the authority, Mr. Austin assumed direct oversight of the case and canceled the agreement, effectively reinstating it as a death-penalty case. He left Ms. Escallier in the role of oversight of Guantánamo’s other cases.

Because of the stakes involved, the “responsibility for such a decision should rest with me,” Mr. Austin said in an order released Friday night by the Pentagon.

“Effective immediately, in the exercise of my authority, I hereby withdraw from the three pretrial agreements that you signed on July 31, 2024.”

Ms. Escallier’s approval of the agreement that was reached between prosecutors and the defendants over two years of negotiations had appeared to resolve the case, which had been mired in pretrial hearings since 2012.

Mr. Austin was traveling abroad and returned to the United States later that day.

By then, prosecutors in the case had alerted the decision to family members of those killed in the attacks, some of whom expressed disappointment and anger that a death sentence was no longer possible. So did Republican leaders.

Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the longtime Republican leader, called the plea agreement “a revolting abdication of the government’s responsibility to defend America and provide justice.”

Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas called the deal “disgraceful and an insult to the victims of the attacks,” and introduced legislation intended to nullify it.

But Senator Richard J. Durbin, Democrat of Illinois and the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, hailed the plea agreement as a “small measure of justice and finality to the victims and their loved ones.”

A senior Pentagon official said that the decision was the secretary’s alone, and that the White House had no involvement. The official said Mr. Austin had never supported a plea deal and wanted the military commission trials to proceed.

Mr. Austin’s action was met with disbelief by lawyers at Guantánamo Bay who were preparing for a hearing, possibly as soon as Wednesday, for the judge in the case, Col. Matthew N. McCall, to question Mr. Mohammed about whether he understood and voluntarily agreed with the plea.

“If the secretary of defense issued such an order, I am respectfully and profoundly disappointed that after all of these years the government still has not learned the lessons of this case, and the mischief that results from disregarding due process and fair play,” said Gary D. Sowards, Mr. Mohammed’s lead defense counsel.

Massive increases in coral across the Australian Great Barrier Reef (GBR) have been reported for 2023-24 making it the third record year in a row of heavy growth. Across almost all parts of the 1,500 mile long reef, from the warmer northern waters to the cooler conditions in the south, coral is now at its highest level since detailed observations began. The inconvenient news has been ignored in mainstream media which, curiously, have focused on a non-story in Nature that claimed “climate change” poses an “existential threat” to the GBR.

“The science tells us that the GBR is in danger – and we should be guided by the science,” Professor Helen McGregor from the University of Wollongong told Victoria Gill of BBC News.

Space Force to expand missile-defense satellite network in medium Earth orbit

The U.S. Space Force initiated a new phase in its missile defense satellite program.

The Space Systems Command on Aug. 9 released a “request for prototype proposals” inviting vendors to submit designs for satellites known as Missile Track Custody Epoch 2, marking the second phase of the Space Force’s program to develop a missile-tracking network in medium Earth orbit (MEO).

The Epoch 2 program builds upon the foundation laid by Epoch 1, the first version of the MEO missile warning and tracking constellation being built by Millennium Space Systems which is projected to launch in late 2026 and early 2027.

Raytheon had been selected to build three Epoch 1 satellites but its contract was terminated due to cost and schedule issues.

The Space Force is seeking prototype proposals for Epoch 2 so it can test and explore new technologies before moving to full-scale production.

The Missile Track Custody program is expected to involve a significant investment, with the Space Force projecting a budget of approximately $6 billion over the 2025-2029 period for the development and procurement of up to 18 satellites.

These satellites will be optically cross-linked to ensure continuous surveillance and tracking of missile threats.

Missile-tracking satellites are designed to detect and monitor the launch and flight path of potential threats.

These satellites use advanced sensors to identify the heat signatures of missile launches and track their trajectories, providing early warning and targeting data to defense systems.

Space Force officials said MEO satellites provide advantages over sensors in both lower orbits and geostationary orbits for persistent tracking of next-generation threats like hypersonic glide vehicles, which pose unique challenges due to their speed, maneuverability, and faint heat signatures.

The MEO satellite constellation is designed to be a component of the Department of Defense’s multi-orbit missile defense architecture.

This layered approach includes a low Earth orbit tier of proliferated tracking satellites, as well as geosynchronous and highly elliptical orbit satellites that offer persistent coverage.

With the switch at the top of the Democratic ticket, Donald Trump has become a target-rich environment for Kamala Harris’s prosecutorial chops. “I took on perpetrators of all kinds,” Harris told Democratic campaign staffers earlier this week, recalling her days as, successively, a Bay Area deputy DA, San Francisco’s top DA, and California’s attorney general. “Predators who abused women. Fraudsters who ripped off consumers. Cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. So hear me when I say: I know Donald Trump’s type.”

While it’s hard to find anyone on the left who doesn’t think a Kamala takedown of Donald on a debate stage would be a boon to civilization as such, one occasionally hears some far-left peeps that her record is a tad too prosecutorial, even as Republicans savage her for being soft on crime. In fact, however, her first election campaign, in which she successfully ousted San Francisco DA Terence Hallinan, makes clear that she long ago navigated the path to being both tough on crime and tough on the conditions that lead to crime.

Hallinan, as his staunchest supporters would readily concede, was a piece of work—prone to so many fistfights as a young man that the California Bar Association had to hold multiple hearings before authorizing him to practice. (Hallinan attributed his often out-of-control pugnacity to a thyroid condition, while his mother testified that he’d begun fighting as a teen in response to the attacks and ridicule he’d encountered because his attorney father was, to all appearances, a Communist at the height of the Red Scare. The Progressive Party that was formed in 1948 to run Henry Wallace for president was still on the ballot in a few states in 1952, and Hallinan’s pop, Vincent, was its presidential nominee. I include this tidbit to give my readers a leg up in any championship round of Political Trivial Pursuit.)

In his pre-DA practice as a counterculture defense attorney, Hallinan represented a vast number of people brought up on various drug charges, assorted murderers, and, briefly, Patty Hearst. In office, his zeal clearly got the better of him when a bar fight involving some San Francisco cops led him to indict the department’s chief, who had been nowhere near that bar, and who also was the department’s first Black chief who’d also devised quotas for minority hiring into the department. That indictment managed to estrange a good chunk of local progressives. Having also fired many of the deputy DAs upon taking office, Hallinan also racked up the lowest conviction rate of any of California’s 58 district attorneys. (One case his office did win was a murder conviction for the owners of a dog that had mauled a woman to death. One of the two deputy DAs who won that case was Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom, then Gavin Newsom’s wife and now Donald Trump Jr.’s fiancée. You can’t make this stuff up.)

Harris was one of three attorneys who challenged Hallinan in the 2003 election, coming in second to Hallinan in the primary and defeating him by a 56 percent to 44 percent margin in the runoff. Hallinan himself noted that Harris didn’t really run to his right, winning, rather, by peeling away many of his progressive supporters. As the San Francisco Chronicle noted, “Both candidates supported medical marijuana, opposed the death penalty and said juvenile suspects should be steered away from adult courts in all but the most serious cases.” Instead, Harris emphasized Hallinan’s low rate of convictions (in 2001, having a 52 percent rate of convictions for the felonies he prosecuted, while the statewide average had been 83 percent).

That political persona—a tough progressive—certainly worked in San Francisco two decades ago, and is pretty much the median position of today’s Democratic Party. Trump will doubtless assail and misrepresent Harris’s record, but he has more to fear from her prosecutorial sensibility than he has grounds to attack.

The political earthquake that has made Kamala Harris the Democratic Party’s nominee for president is a San Francisco story that began more than 60 years ago.

The cast of characters includes a chain-smoking, hard-drinking and profane political mastermind; a Polish Jewish activist who fled the Nazis and later became a member of Congress; a Black lawyer and civil rights activist from rural Texas; and the scion of a powerful political family who moved to San Francisco when she got married and made it to Congress in substantial part due to a deathbed endorsement from the refugee-turned-congresswoman.

Harris, whose first foray into electoral politics was in 2003 when she won a tough race for district attorney in San Francisco, and Nancy Pelosi, the longtime San Francisco congresswoman who was instrumental in persuading Joe Biden not to seek reelection, can both trace their political origins and their brand of liberal politics to the 1963 mayoral election in San Francisco.

The two major candidates in that race were the Republican, Harold Dobbs, and the Democrat, Jack Shelley. Shelley had served in Congress since 1949, had strong ties to organized labor and was seeking to become San Francisco’s first Democratic mayor in over half a century.

Dobbs was an affable businessman and one of the owners of a popular diner chain known as Mel’s Drive-In. In the days just before the election, there was a demonstration outside of a Mel’s Drive-In location in San Francisco because of the chain’s refusal to hire African Americans in customer-facing positions, such as waiters or waitresses. The young civil rights attorney who expertly organized that boycott and therefore helped deliver the election to Shelley was Willie Brown.

Shelley won the election, and that’s when the pieces started to fall into place that paved the way for, six decades later, Harris having the presidency within her reach.

The challenger is Noah Phillips, a Democrat and county prosecutor who has similar views as Harris on the issue of racial bias in policing. Another thing they have in common is support from Soros, also a prominent backer of of liberal causes. Soros backed Harris in her 2016 Senate run, donating $5,400 to her campaign. And he's a contributed heavily to Phillips, who has taken in more than $350,000 this month alone to take on Schubert, a moderate Republican. She has faced backlash and protests with activists urging her to file charges against the officers who in March shot and killed Clark, who was unarmed. Soros in recent years has become a major contributor to local district attorney candidates who believe in reducing racial disparities in law enforcement. Politico reported in 2016 that among his goals is "reshaping the American justice system." Phillips this past weekend said there has been a "failure in leadership" under Schubert, noting he'd undertake a review of law enforcement practices to address racial bias, if elected. Harris had a similar message at a Sacramento town hall last month, when she said battling implicit bias must be a priority in law enforcement.

U.S. military rejects calls to reduce sonic booms from SpaceX rockets blasting along California coast

Military officials are rejecting demands from a state agency to better monitor and mitigate the effects of rocket launches and sonic booms from Vandenberg Space Force Base, frustrating local officials and increasing tensions between the U.S. Space Force and the state agency tasked with preserving the California coast.

SpaceX, a leading contractor with Space Force, wants to rapidly multiply the number of rockets launched from the military base in Santa Barbara County.

The company hasn’t been seeking the commission’s approval, however; instead, Space Force officials have been negotiating with the California Coastal Commission for months over a plan to allow 36 launches at the base this year — six times more than the previous agreement allowed.

As part of those talks, the state commission asked Space Force to track and document more closely how the blasts affect wildlife and to consider ways to reduce the harm from sonic booms.

The commission can’t impose its will on the military — it can only ask for Space Force to cooperate.

At the commission’s meeting Thursday, what is usually a mild-mannered monthly session turned tense after military officials rejected the additional monitoring and mitigation, and Space Force officials refused to take questions.

Commission members were visibly irked.

“I’m beyond pissed,” said Commissioner Susan Lowenberg. “I don’t understand why our own government is thumbing their nose at another branch of our government.”

Said Commissioner Kristina Kunkel, “I hope this commission won’t be bullied into ignoring environmental protections.”

The discordant meeting came two months after Space Force officials admitted for the first time that sonic booms from rocket launches at the base were regularly rattling residents and wildlife along roughly 100 miles of coast across Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

Recent changes in rocket trajectories have made the sonic booms more common for residents inland, and Space Force officials have said they’re looking to significantly increase the number of rocket blasts each year.

That steep increase is being fueled mainly by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The company is currently headquartered in Hawthorne but, according to Musk, those offices are bound for Texas.

A spokesperson for Vandenberg Space Force Base told The Times that the headquarters shift has no effect on the number of rocket launches SpaceX plans to do from the California base.

By 2026, SpaceX still plans to launch more than 90 rockets there.

On Thursday, the state commission approved the increase in launches with new requirements for Space Force to increase monitoring of wildlife inside and outside the base and to analyze the effects that sonic booms have on wildlife, such as southern sea otters, California red-legged frogs, western snowy plover and California least tern.

Harris’s new running mate has been obsessed with mapping software GIS since the early 1990s—and uses maps as a critical governing tool in Minnesota.

“He’s one of us, Jack.” So said one of the presenters at the 2024 Esri User Conference, held in July—an event for mapmakers who use GIS software—as Minnesota Governor Tim Walz walked out on the stage.

Walz, now the Democratic nominee for vice president, shared a little of his history with the crowd. Growing up in a small town in Nebraska, he spent summers working on a cattle ranch. At the end of the day, back in the bunk house at the ranch, he read through old issues of National Geographic, sparking an early interest in geography. Later, after joining the army, he became a geography teacher. And at a geography conference in the early 1990s, he picked up a floppy disk with a free copy of Esri’s GIS (“geographic information systems”) software.

He quickly taught himself how to use it. “I said to my colleagues, ‘This is going to change the way we teach and change the world,’” Walz said at the event last month. Walz’s love for maps eventually influenced how the state rolled out programs to fight childhood poverty and how the state communicated about the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. And if the Harris-Walz ticket wins this November, it will undoubtedly play a role in his work in the White House.

Maps to help fight COVID-19

As a teacher, he used GIS to help students learning about the Holocaust understand that genocide could happen again. In 1993, his high school students in Nebraska built a global map that included layers with details about food insecurity, drought, and colonialism to try to predict where the next genocide could be. “They came up with Rwanda,” Walz told the crowd. “Twelve months later, the world witnessed the horrific genocide in Rwanda.” Many of the students went on to work at nonprofits.

Using maps across the legislative agenda

Other states also use GIS tools, but Walz’s background has meant that he can go deeper, says Pat Cummens, director of government strategy and policy solutions at Esri. “As governor, he’s been driving this idea of ‘One Minnesota,’ which means you look at everything holistically to break down barriers between agencies, so they can look at complex situations and make them more understandable and not just kind of stovepipe from one agency to another,” she says. “And putting things on the map and being able to integrate things makes that all possible.”

Kamala D. Harris, 38, is a veteran prosecutor who has dedicated her outstanding legal talents to prosecuting violent crime, combating the sexual exploitation of children and working creatively to improve the quality of life in our communities.

A former Deputy District Attorney in San Francisco and Alameda County, Kamala has thirteen years of courtroom experience. She currently serves as a San Francisco Deputy City Attorney, where she is Chief of the Community and Neighborhood Division.

Kamala was born in Oakland and raised in Berkeley. Her parents, both professors, were active in the Civil Rights Movement and instilled in Kamala a strong commitment to justice and public service. That commitment led Kamala to Howard University, America's oldest black university, and then to Hastings College of the Law. She graduated in 1990.

As Deputy District Attorney in Alameda County from 1990 to 1998, Kamala prosecuted hundreds of serious and violent felonies, including homicide, rape and child sexual assault cases. Before Louise Renne recruited her to join the City Attorney's office in August, 2000, Kamala was the Managing Attorney of the Career Criminal Unit of the San Francisco District Attorney's office.

Throughout her career, Kamala has made youth and children a priority. She was one of the few prosecutors in California to stand up against Proposition 21, which has forced more young people unnecessarily into prison. Currently, she is spearheading a public-private task force that is pushing San Francisco to confront the growing problem of teen-age prostitution.

Among her many community activities, Kamala is Co-Chair of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights; President of the Board of Directors of Partners Ending Domestic Abuse; elected member of the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Bar Association; and founder of an SF Museum of Modern Art mentoring program which has served hundreds of young people from the inner city.

Kamala has been recognized many times for the excellence of her work. For her work on behalf of youth, Kamala received an award from Crime Victims United. In 1998, she was named by the Daily Journal as one of the top 20 young lawyers in the State of California. Most recently, she earned an award from the County Counsel Association of California for her work granting gay couples equal rights in child adoption cases.

San Francisco is a city of neighborhoods, and our neighborhoods deserve a voice at the District Attorney's office. Instead, over the last eight years, the neighbors have been told that important problems such as drug-dealing, teen prostitution, aggressive panhandling, and gang violence were not a priority.

To give neighbors a voice, I will create Neighborhood Crime Councils that will act as a forum for the District Attorney's office to listen to the particular crime problems of that community and help determine how the office uses limited resources to improve our neighborhood quality of life.

During the campaign, I will also begin holding neighborhood town meetings in every Supervisor's District. These will be opportunities for neighborhoods to hear my views and for me to hear neighbor's view on important crime issues.

As the District Attorney, I will also work to expand and improve Community Courts, which have been used with limited success in this city but with great success throughout the United States. Community Courts are especially effective in deterring quality of life crimes and improving the day-to-day life of our city.

They both have glamour, brains and determination they even travel in the same tight-knit San Francisco social circle but don't look for district attorney hopeful Kamala Harristo get a job reference from former office mate Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom anytime soon.

Because behind the smiles, Guilfoyle Newsom the network TV analyst and wife of mayoral front-runner Gavin Newsom is still smarting from what she says was the frosty and underhanded treatment she got from Harris when she was making a bid to return to the D.A.'s office a couple of years back.

"The bottom line is she didn't want me there," Guilfoyle Newsom tells us.

The back story as they say in Hollywood begins in 1996 when freshly elected District Attorney Terence Hallinan swept house at the Hall of Justice, and in the process sent the young and green Guilfoyle packing. She landed in the Los Angeles D.A.'s office.

A short while later, Hallinan chief assistant Richard Iglehart, who had worked with Harris in Alameda County, recruited the young up-and-comer (who also had been dating Mayor Willie Brown) to supervise the D.A.'s career criminal unit.

In time, Iglehart landed a judgeship and exited - and Darrell Salomon, a local attorney with his own political connections, became the new No. 2.

Before long, Guilfoyle who by this time was dating the politically ambitious Supervisor Newsom started making overtures to Salomon and others about returning to San Francisco.

Just what happened next is open to interpretation.

Some office insiders say Harris caught wind of Guilfoyle's plan and got her resume from the secretarial staff.

Next, Guilfoyle Newsom says, Harris was on the phone to her in L.A.:

"She called me and said basically that she was on the hiring committee and in charge of the budget for the D.A.'s office, and that I should have gone through her if I wanted to return to the D.A.'s office - and that there was no money to hire me."

Guilfoyle Newsom - who already had met with Salomon about coming back - says she called the office to find out what was going on and was told that that there was no such hiring committee and that Harris had no say in the matter.

"You have to understand, I came with an excellent resume," Guilfoyle Newsom said, "and talented women should support other talented women."

Harris recalled the conversation differently.

"I never discouraged her from joining the office," she said. "I never suggested to her there wasn't a job for her in the San Francisco D.A.'s office - of that, I'm very clear."

So why did Harris call her?

"To see if she needed any help - to let her know I was there to help her," Harris said.

She says she's at a loss to explain Guilfoyle Newsom's version of events. "I've seen Kimberly a number of times over the last few months," Harris said. "We have great rapport and have great respect for each other.

"I think she is a great lawyer," Harris added, "and I look forward to working with her."

As things turned out, Guilfoyle Newsom did land a job with the D.A. a couple of months after their chilly conversation - and she soon made quite a name for herself as one of the two attorneys prosecuting the owners of the dogs that killed Diane Whipple.

Guilfoyle Newsom is still able to summon a few kind words for Harris - calling her "very smart" and "a good speaker" and someone who "will work very hard" if elected.

But don't count on Guilfoyle Newsom going to work for Harris - or Hallinan, for that matter. She's been on leave from the D.A.'s office these past few months while helping her husband's campaign and pursuing her own budding career as a legal commentator for ABC News, CNN and Fox.

Say cheese: Saturday's long-awaited opening of the new Carquinez Bridge brought Penngrove resident Allan Henderson and his family to the area earlier in the week for a sneak peek - and boy, did they get an eyeful.

As they were having lunch at the Dead Fish restaurant in Crockett, watching the construction crews put the finishing touches on the $500 million span, a giant motorcade started heading north across the bridge.

"There must have been 16 to 18 CHP motorcycles," Henderson said, plus a half-dozen squad cars and a couple of unmarked sedans.

The motorcade stopped midspan, and all the bridge workers descended on the parade, bringing construction to a standstill.

When weighing factors that affect America’s strength in our renewed era of great-power competition, too many analysts overlook domestic regulatory law. June’s Supreme Court ruling in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, which overturned the forty-year-old judicial doctrine known as “Chevron deference,” requires us to think carefully about a crucial domain of American power: outer space.

The celestial writ of administrative agencies determines how American corporations and government entities behave in space—and hence our capacity to meet challenges from Russia and China.

It may take years for the impacts of this decision on legislation and administrative law to become fully apparent, especially for the space community.

Right away, however, it seems there are significant opportunities to shape new rules that will guide our future interactions with the universe that lies beyond our skies.

Contrary to the concerns of some, the Loper Bright decision does not condemn us to anarchic chaos. Instead, it allows us to address the weaknesses of a sometimes opaque and clunky top-down process by providing a more deliberative and open one.

Chevron deference originated from a 1984 Supreme Court ruling, changing the way that administrative and regulatory agencies could act when statutory language was unclear.

Courts were instructed to grant significant discretion to regulatory bodies in interpreting ambiguous laws, intervening only if an interpretation was deemed impermissible.

This deference placed detailed technical decisions in the hands of the executive branch. Over the past four decades, Chevron has been central in rule and regulation development, significantly shifting the balance of power from the judiciary to the executive.

Michael Listner, writing in Space Review, provides a good overview.

Some assert that this decision bodes ill for future space activities. But the decision cannot easily be reversed.

It is more useful to discuss the opportunities and challenges it presents for the space community rather than lament the passing of an idealized pre-Loper world.

Importantly, the Loper decision does not eliminate regulatory agencies or rulemaking. These agencies will continue to make rules, and people will still be able to contest those rulings in court.

Congress will still delegate regulatory authority through legislation. The end of Chevron deference changes the forum for debate when laws are unclear, leaving us to navigate this new landscape.

Looking at the vast expanse of possibilities that shape the landscape of space activity, we must consider the basic nature of space activities themselves.

One essential fact is that our knowledge of practical details of what we do in and with the rest of the universe is inherently limited. Nobody can foresee with certainty all future discoveries or innovations, nor can we predict our chances for success.

Everyone—from judges to regulators, legislators, and industry leaders—is (and may always be) on the early part of the learning curve. Over the last seventy years, we have learned much about outer space.

Yet, compared to the vastness of the universe, our knowledge is just an infinitesimal drop in the bucket. We should approach discussions about our future in space with extreme humility.

Space offers countless stumbling blocks for those who approach it with hubris.

The problem the Chevron doctrine presented for space was not about creating regulations but about how those regulations would be developed. Background discussions and debates are critical.

The difficulties of operating in space and the humility they demand mean that, above all else, we need to be careful about showing our work when making difficult decisions.

The regulatory process may involve listening sessions, public comments, and the creation of precedent. However, these are all secondary activities, not necessities.

Sun unleashes X-class solar flare, blasts 3rd coronal mass ejection toward Earth in a week

There are now three different coronal mass ejections (CMEs) heading toward our planet, which could mean increased opportunities this weekend to see the aurora across the northern U.S. and Europe.

CMEs are massive blasts of magnetic field and plasma that originate from solar flares from the sun, which can lead to powerful geomagnetic storms for us on Earth.

These storms are what give skywatchers the chance to witness the stunning showcase of colors across the night sky known as auroras.

Two CMEs were already Earth-bound from M-class solar flares that erupted on Wednesday (Aug. 7) and scientists at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) confirmed in their forecast discussion that another one originated from an X-class flare on Thursday (Aug. 8).

These CMEs are timed up perfectly with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower on Aug. 11 and 12, meaning skywatchers could potentially catch not one stunning celestial spectacle this weekend, but two.

X-class solar flares are the most powerful class of solar flares, and the X designation is followed by a number 1 through 9 that indicates their strength, with 9 being the highest.

Thursday's blast from sunspot region AR3777 came in at a X1.3 and peaked around 3:35 p.m. EDT (1935 UTC).

This was the strongest yet from this active region, and the flare resulted in disruptions to shortwave radio, producing a blackout across North America including the Hawaiian Islands, according to NOAA.

There are no speed limits for CMEs, in fact, Spaceweather.com shared in a post that Thursday’s eruption surpassed 2.2 million mph (1,000 km/s)!

With the trio of CMEs forecast to arrive between now and the end of the weekend, a geomagnetic storm watch remains in place through Sunday (Aug. 11).

The current projection would be for a G2 (Moderate) solar storm but scientists will continue to monitor the impacts once the CMEs begin to arrive at Earth.

The possibility for viewing the auroras of course will depend on local weather conditions, but SWPC forecasters suggest it could be visible for locations across the northern and upper Midwest ranging from New York to Idaho.

You can always check your specific location through NOAA's 30-minute forecast model or the experimental Aurora Viewline which continue to be updated.

Space Perspective unveils mothership boat for stratospheric balloon trips

Space Perspective has announced the completion of its new "marine spaceport" where its stratospheric balloons will take intrepid tourists to the edge of space.

The vessel, Marine Spaceport (MS) Voyager (named in commemoration of Voyager 1 interstellar probe mission), took two years to build.

Space Perspective says it is the first-ever spaceport for human spaceflight that will be on open water, and will be located on the Space Coast of Florida.

The massive world-class powerhouse spans 294 feet (90 meters) long and is equipped to both launch and retrieve the spaceflight experience company's SpaceBalloons, pressurized modules that will transport travelers on a six-hour expedition to the edge of space.

"The capability to launch and retrieve the Neptune capsule at sea creates worldwide scalability along with an unprecedented closure of the routine operations safety case," Taber MacCallum, founder and co-CEO of Space Perspective, said in a press release.

"We are proud to bring a new spaceflight capability to Port Canaveral and the Space Coast."

The launch system includes a set of rollers that will assist in preparing the balloons for liftoff, moving them around while in the vertical position on the 200-foot (61-meter) deck.

This will help minimize the launch footprint versus typical balloon launches by allowing them to take place without the assistance of aircraft carriers.

Space Perspective says the vessel also has extra maneuverability built with four generators and four engines, a Mission Control on its bridge, and support equipment for the capsule that will hang beneath its balloons, Spaceship Neptune, that can be used for both the launch and recovery process.

Following its launch and adventure to space and back, the final phase will be similar to water splashdowns of SpaceX Dragon capsules and originally from the Apollo era.

After splashdown, Spaceship Neptune will be stabilized by fast boats and then hoisted up back onto MS Voyager by a 52-foot (16-meter) lifting frame.

Space Perspective says it is the world's first carbon-neutral company providing trips to the edge of space and is working toward making the trip to space more a reality than in the past.

The company says their experience was created as a more pleasant way for explorers to experience the wonders of the edge of space without having to complete training or experience weightlessness.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 2018, 28 year-old Richard Russell, later known as 'Sky King,' borrowed an airplane from Seattle-Tacoma Airport and took it for a joyride for over an hour before crashing into a remote Island.

Russell had started working as a ground crew member to visit his family in Alaska more often. Despite having no flying experience other than video games, he quickly became fascinated with aviation. On the evening of August 10th, he managed to access an aircraft and take off smoothly before other employees realized something was wrong.

During his joyride, Russell flew over Mount Rainier and the Olympics Mountain, executed a perfect barrel roll, and asked for GPS coordinates of an orca and calf recently spotted.

Air traffic controllers, two F-15 fighters, and a civilian pilot tried to convince Russell to land the plane, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Eventually, the plane ran out of fuel and Russell directed it into Ketron Island. His death was ruled a suicide, potentially linked to brain injuries from previous concussions.

Russell’s family noted that “he was a faithful husband, a loving man, and a good friend… He was right in saying that there are so many people who loved him.” Rest in peace, Sky King. ✈️👑

Legendary space artist Adolf Schaller dies at 68

One of the world’s pioneering and most talented space artists, Adolf Schaller, died in early August at age 68.

He leaves a published body of work that establishes him as one of the greatest space artists.

His attention to ongoing discoveries, from the solar system to distant galaxies, resulted in portrayals reflecting both what is known about these places and his vision of their visual appeal.

Born in 1956, Schaller’s life spanned the Space Age from its beginnings with Sputnik 1 to many recent discoveries in near and distant space.

In the mid-1970s, Astronomy magazine was a pioneering presenter of space art, and Schaller’s earlier work seen there formed a large part of that magazine’s initial “golden age.”

An editor of Astronomy, Terence Dickinson, later published several editions of a magnificent book, The Universe and Beyond (Camden House, 1992), which contained numerous illustrations by Schaller, many executed specifically for the book.

Schaller later became part of the team of artists for Carl Sagan’s PBS show Cosmos, and created many pieces of animation artwork as well as painted globes and landscape model backdrops for the series.

He later lent his talents to the PBS shows Planet Earth and Infinite Voyage. Schaller also produced many layers of art for a brief zoom to the galactic center for Douglas Trumbull’s film Brainstorm.

Schaller’s Europa landscape input for the film 2010 was too exacting for the director, who fired him when the artist’s informed knowledge clashed with the director’s preconceptions.

Schaller’s space art later appeared in press releases by many observatories and in redesigned exhibits for Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.

A book by Dickinson and Schaller, Extraterrestrials: A Field Guide for Earthlings (Camden House, 1994), further shows the breadth of his conceptual and artistic abilities.

Adolf Schaller’s vision will be missed, but his work will continue to inspire.

Two decades ago, the US intelligence community worked closely with Silicon Valley in an effort to track citizens in cyberspace. And Google is at the heart of that origin story. Some of the research that led to Google’s ambitious creation was funded and coordinated by a research group established by the intelligence community to find ways to track individuals and groups online.

The intelligence community hoped that the nation’s leading computer scientists could take non-classified information and user data, combine it with what would become known as the internet, and begin to create for-profit, commercial enterprises to suit the needs of both the intelligence community and the public. They hoped to direct the supercomputing revolution from the start in order to make sense of what millions of human beings did inside this digital information network. That collaboration has made a comprehensive public-private mass surveillance state possible today.

The story of the deliberate creation of the modern mass-surveillance state includes elements of Google’s surprising, and largely unknown, origin. It is a somewhat different creation story than the one the public has heard, and explains what Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page set out to build, and why.

But this isn’t just the origin story of Google: It’s the origin story of the mass-surveillance state, and the government money that funded it.

In the mid 1990s, the intelligence community in America began to realize that they had an opportunity. The supercomputing community was just beginning to migrate from university settings into the private sector, led by investments from a place that would come to be known as Silicon Valley.

A digital revolution was underway: one that would transform the world of data gathering and how we make sense of massive amounts of information. The intelligence community wanted to shape Silicon Valley’s supercomputing efforts at their inception so they would be useful for both military and homeland security purposes. Could this supercomputing network, which would become capable of storing terabytes of information, make intelligent sense of the digital trail that human beings leave behind?

Answering this question was of great interest to the intelligence community.

Intelligence-gathering may have been their world, but the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the National Security Agency (NSA) had come to realize that their future was likely to be profoundly shaped outside the government. It was at a time when military and intelligence budgets within the Clinton administration were in jeopardy, and the private sector had vast resources at their disposal. If the intelligence community wanted to conduct mass surveillance for national security purposes, it would require cooperation between the government and the emerging supercomputing companies.

To do this, they began reaching out to the scientists at American universities who were creating this supercomputing revolution. These scientists were developing ways to do what no single group of human beings sitting at work stations in the NSA and the CIA could ever hope to do: gather huge amounts of data and make intelligent sense of it.

Over the next few years, the program’s stated aim was to provide more than a dozen grants of several million dollars each to advance this research concept. The grants were to be directed largely through the NSF so that the most promising, successful efforts could be captured as intellectual property and form the basis of companies attracting investments from Silicon Valley. This type of public-to-private innovation system helped launch powerful science and technology companies like Qualcomm, Symantec, Netscape, and others, and funded the pivotal research in areas like Doppler radar and fiber optics,which are central to large companies like AccuWeather, Verizon, and AT&T today.Today, the NSF provides nearly 90% of all federal funding for university-based computer-science research.

The CIA and NSA’s end goal

The research arms of the CIA and NSA hoped that the best computer-science minds in academia could identify what they called “birds of a feather:” Just as geese fly together in large V shapes, or flocks of sparrows make sudden movements together in harmony, they predicted that like-minded groups of humans would move together online.The intelligence community named their first unclassified briefing for scientists the “birds of a feather” briefing,and the “Birds of a Feather Session on the Intelligence Community Initiative in Massive Digital Data Systems” took place at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose in the spring of 1995.

Their research aim was to track digital fingerprints inside the rapidly expanding global information network, which was then known as the World Wide Web. Could an entire world of digital information be organized so that the requests humans made inside such a network be tracked and sorted? Could their queries be linked and ranked in order of importance? Could “birds of a feather” be identified inside this sea of information so that communities and groups could be tracked in an organized way?

By working with emerging commercial-data companies, their intent was to track like-minded groups of people across the internet and identify them from the digital fingerprints they left behind, much like forensic scientists use fingerprint smudges to identify criminals. Just as “birds of a feather flock together,” they predicted that potential terrorists would communicate with each other in this new global, connected world—and they could find them by identifying patterns in this massive amount of new information. Once these groups were identified, they could then follow their digital trails everywhere.

In 1995, one of the first and most promising MDDS grants went to a computer-science research team at Stanford University with a decade-long history of working with NSF and DARPA grants. The primary objective of this grant was “query optimization of very complex queries that are described using the ‘query flocks’ approach.” A second grant—the DARPA-NSF grant most closely associated with Google’s origin—was part of a coordinated effort to build a massive digital library using the internet as its backbone.Both grants funded research by two graduate students who were making rapid advances in web-page ranking, as well as tracking (and making sense of) user queries: future Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page.

The research by Brin and Page under these grants became the heart of Google: people using search functions to find precisely what they wanted inside a very large data set.The intelligence community, however, saw a slightly different benefit in their research: Could the network be organized so efficiently that individual users could be uniquely identified and tracked?

This process is perfectly suited for the purposes of counter-terrorism and homeland security efforts: Human beings and like-minded groups who might pose a threat to national security can be uniquely identified online before they do harm. This explains why the intelligence community found Brin’s and Page’s research efforts so appealing; prior to this time, the CIA largely used human intelligence efforts in the field to identify people and groups that might pose threats. The ability to track them virtually (in conjunction with efforts in the field) would change everything.

It was the beginning of what in just a few years’ time would become Google.The two intelligence-community managers charged with leading the program met regularlywith Brin as his research progressed, and he was an author on several other research papers that resulted from this MDDS grant before he and Page left to form Google.

The grants allowed Brin and Page to do their work and contributed to their breakthroughs in web-page ranking and tracking user queries. Brin didn’t work for the intelligence community—or for anyone else. Google had not yet been incorporated. He was just a Stanford researcher taking advantage of the grant provided by the NSA and CIA through the unclassified MDDS program.

The MDDS research effort has never been part of Google’s origin story, even though the principal investigator for the MDDS grant specifically named Google as directly resulting from their research:“Its core technology, which allows it to find pages far more accurately than other search engines, was partially supported by this grant,” he wrote. In a published research paper that includes some of Brin’s pivotal work, the authors also reference the NSF grant that was created by the MDDS program.

Instead, every Google creation story only mentions just one federal grant: the NSF/DARPA “digital libraries” grantwhich was designed to allow Stanford researchers to search the entire World Wide Web stored on the university’s servers at the time. “The development of the Google algorithms was carried on a variety of computers, mainly provided by the NSF-DARPA-NASA-funded Digital Library project at Stanford,” Stanford’s Infolab says of its origin, for example. NSF likewise only references the digital libraries grant,not the MDDS grant as well, in its own history of Google’s origin.in the famous research paper, “The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine,” which describes the creation of Google, Brin and Page thanked the NSF and DARPA for its digital library grant to Stanford. ==But the grant from the intelligence community’s MDDS program—specifically designed for the breakthrough that Google was built upon—has faded into obscurity.

Google has said in the past that it was not funded or created by the CIA. For instance, when stories circulated in 2006 that Google had received funding from the intelligence community for years to assist in counter-terrorism efforts, the company told Wired magazine founder John Battelle, “The statements related to Google are completely untrue.”

Did the CIA directly fund the work of Brin and Page, and therefore create Google? No. But were Brin and Page researching precisely what the NSA, the CIA, and the intelligence community hoped for, assisted by their grants? Absolutely.

To understand this significance, you have to consider what the intelligence community was trying to achieve as it seeded grants to the best computer-science minds in academia: The CIA and NSA funded an unclassified, compartmentalized program designed from its inception to spur the development of something that looks almost exactly like Google. Brin’s breakthrough research on page ranking by tracking user queries and linking them to the many searches conducted—essentially identifying “birds of a feather”—was largely the aim of the intelligence community’s MDDS program.And Google succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.

The intelligence community’s enduring legacy within Silicon Valley

Digital privacy concerns over the intersection between the intelligence community and commercial technology giants have grown in recent years. But most people still don’t understand the degree to which the intelligence community relies on the world’s biggest science and tech companies for its counter-terrorism and national-security work.

Civil-liberty advocacy groups have aired their privacy concerns for years, especially as they now relate to the Patriot Act. “Hastily passed 45 days after 9/11 in the name of national security, the Patriot Act was the first of many changes to surveillance laws that made it easier for the government to spy on ordinary Americans by expanding the authority to monitor phone and email communications, collect bank and credit reporting records, and track the activity of innocent Americans on the Internet,” says the ACLU. “While most Americans think it was created to catch terrorists, the Patriot Act actually turns regular citizens into suspects.”

When asked, the biggest technology and communications companies—from Verizon and AT&T to Google, Facebook, and Microsoft—say that they never deliberately and proactively offer up their vast databases on their customers to federal security and law enforcement agencies: They say that they only respond to subpoenas or requests that are filed properly under the terms of the Patriot Act.

But even a cursory glance through recent public records shows that there is a treadmill of constant requests that could undermine the intent behind this privacy promise. According to the data-request records that the companies make available to the public, in the most recent reporting period between 2016 and 2017, local, state and federal government authorities seeking information related to national security, counter-terrorism or criminal concerns issued more than 260,000 subpoenas, court orders, warrants, and other legal requests to Verizon, more than 250,000 such requests to AT&T, and nearly 24,000 subpoenas, search warrants, or court orders to Google. Direct national security or counter-terrorism requests are a small fraction of this overall group of requests, but the Patriot Act legal process has now become so routinized that the companies each have a group of employees who simply take care of the stream of requests.

In this way, the collaboration between the intelligence community and big, commercial science and tech companies has been wildly successful. When national security agencies need to identify and track people and groups, they know where to turn – and do so frequently. That was the goal in the beginning. It has succeeded perhaps more than anyone could have imagined at the time.

Two British intelligence officials were sent to a classified international summit about UFOs at the Pentagon, it has emerged, despite the UK Ministry of Defence claiming to have had no interest in the subject since 2009.

The UFO community are convinced that world governments know more than they are letting on about the existence of aliens while governments have taken an interest in examining the phenomenon of UFOs after several unexplained sightings.

On Tuesday Express.co.uk reported that the MOD branded an earlier study by the British military into the potential existence of alien life from UFOs reportedly seen across the country, including by its pilots, a waste of taxpayer's cash.

The spokeswoman said: "In over 50 years, no sightings of extra-terrestrial intelligence, Unidentified Flying Objects and Unidentified Aerial Phenomena reported to us indicated the existence of any military threat to the United Kingdom.

"It remains more valuable to prioritise MOD resources towards other Defence-related activities. In 2009 the MOD UFO desk was closed because it served no defence purpose and was taking staff away from more valuable defence-related activities.

"There was no defence benefit in such investigations and therefore, it was deemed an inappropriate use of defence resources."

It prompted Nick Pope, a former MOD civil servant who investigated UFO phenomena, up to the 1990s to make contact with a very recent Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) response from the MOD that suggested otherwise.

Only four days earlier the MOD sent him the FOIA response which said two members of staff from Defence Intelligence (DI) had visited the USA in connection with UFOs, now called Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) by world governments.

Mr Pope had asked: How many MOD personnel attended the "inaugural UAP Caucus Working Group" held at the Pentagon on 24 May 2023?

He also asked for their grade or rank, which division they came from and if they were defence intelligence staff.

The reply said: "In regard to questions one and four, at the time of the meeting, two members of staff from Defence Intelligence (DI) were in attendance."

It would not discuss ranks or divisions due to "personnel security."

Very little is known about what went on at the meeting, but it was arranged by Five Eyes (FVEY), an anglosphere intelligence alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

They work together on a treaty for cooperation in signals intelligence.

Grant Lavac, a UFO researcher based in Melbourne, Australia, obtained redacted parts of an agenda for the meeting under US freedom of information laws.

He posted them on X adding: "AARO’s Five Eyes forum on UAP that was led by former AARO Director, Dr Sean Kirkpatrick in May 2023 was officially called the 'FVEY Inaugural UAP Caucus Working Group'.

Labour Councillor Filmed Calling for Far-Right Rioters’ Throats to be Cut is Charged

A (now former) Labour councillor who was filmed telling a crowd in London on Wednesday that far-Right rioters are “disgusting” and should have their throats cut has been charged with encouraging violent disorder. The Telegraph has more.

Ricky Jones, 57, was arrested on Thursday and is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.

Jaswant Narwal, Chief Crown Prosecutor for north London, said: “Jones was filmed addressing a crowd in Walthamstow on Wednesday August 7th during which he appeared to make remarks and a gesture to encourage others to act violently towards far-Right protesters.”

Jones was filmed saying far-Right rioters are “disgusting” and should have their throats cut.

Ricky Jones, a councillor for Princes, in Dartford, was seen on video footage telling anti-racism protesters in Walthamstow, north-east London: “We need to cut all their throats.”

The Labour Party said his behaviour was “completely unacceptable” and he had been suspended. He was also arrested on suspicion of encouraging murder.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed his arrest on Thursday in a post on X, formerly Twitter, which included the original footage of Mr. Jones addressing protesters.

The post said that a man aged in his 50s had been arrested at an address in south east London and “was held on suspicion of encouraging murder and for an offence under the Public Order Act.”

Scotland Yard said Mr. Jones, a paid organiser with the Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association (TSSA) union, was being held in custody at a south London police station.

Before his arrest, the 57-year-old had been suspended from the Labour Party, meaning he will no longer sit as a Labour councillor.

A Labour spokesman said: “This behaviour is completely unacceptable, and it will not be tolerated. The councillor has been suspended from the party.”

A TSSA spokesman said: “TSSA remains steadfast in supporting communities that peacefully stand against fascist aggression. We unequivocally do not condone any threats or acts of violence, as these actions are contrary to our values.”

The union did not say whether any action would be taken against Mr. Jones.

Furthermore, in keeping with so many prior explosive, unanticipated episodes in modern British history, a vicious mainstream blame game has erupted, with ultimate responsibility for the upheaval being apportioned to a wide range of domestic and foreign actors and causes.

The unrest’s actual, and perhaps most apparent, sources have been mysteriously overlooked. For one, average Britons remain gripped by an ever-worsening economic cataclysm, in which the cost of essentials ever rises while living standards precipitously decline. The newly-elected Labour government has not only practically pledged to do nothing to alleviate the misery – by maintaining if not intensifying self-destructive austerity policies – but already exacerbated the dire situation significantly by slashing winter fuel payments, leaving millions facing life-threateningly freezing cold, without state support.

History shows that this milieu is invariably a fertile breeding ground for fascism to take root. With no mainstream alternative to the neoliberal status quo, desperate, disillusioned and dispossessed working-class Britons look to “outsiders” and extremists like Nigel Farage and Tommy Robinson for salvation in ever-greater numbers. And their remedy, as always, is to blame migrants, refugees and “the other” for all of society’s ills and their own personal deprivation rather than ruling elites.

Even more ominously, though, there are unambiguous indications the anti-Muslim fervor that has torn through Britain in August is being stirred up by unseen spectral actors in service of the Zionist entity’s ideological, political, and military interests.

‘Get Them Gone’

For all the flurry of claims and counter-claims about how and why the riots started, there is no dispute they ignited on July 29 following a savage knife attack at a children’s yoga and dance workshop. Three children were killed and eight others injured, with five still in critical condition. Two adults present were also severely harmed. News of the shocking event rapidly spread far and wide, promptly followed by wildly incorrect conjecture and disinformation about the suspect’s identity.

Left-wing influencer William LeGate found himself the butt of online jokes after he mistakenly roasted Kamala Harris’ crowd size, thinking it was from a Trump rally.

In a now-deleted post, LeGate lashed out at former President Donald Trump, claiming that Trump had “ordered” his team to cover up thousands of empty seats with black cloth to avoid the appearance of a sparse crowd.

The problem? The rally was not Trump’s but rather Kamala Harris’ event, which was met with a dismal turnout.

As the tweet began to gain traction, social media users quickly pointed out the blunder, leading LeGate to delete his post amid the embarrassment.

Meanwhile, Kamala Harris’ campaign seems to be adding to the pile of embarrassments. The official Kamala HQ X account was caught sharing a video clip from Trump’s rally in Montana, taken two hours earlier in the day, and passing it off as live footage.

The timestamp on the video clearly shows it was taken at 7:36 pm Eastern time, while actual live footage from 9:35 pm shows a fully packed arena, contradicting the campaign’s narrative.
