NASA's Fermi Finds New Feature in Brightest Gamma-Ray Burst Yet Seen

Jul 25, 2024

In October 2022, astronomers were stunned by what was quickly dubbed the BOAT — the brightest-of-all-time gamma-ray burst (GRB).

Now an international science team reports that data from NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope reveals a feature never seen before.

The brightest gamma-ray burst yet recorded gave scientists a new high-energy feature to study.

“A few minutes after the BOAT erupted, Fermi’s Gamma-ray Burst Monitor recorded an unusual energy peak that caught our attention,” said lead researcher Maria Edvige Ravasio at Radboud University in Nijmegen, Netherlands, and affiliated with Brera Observatory, part of INAF

(the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics) in Merate, Italy.

“When I first saw that signal, it gave me goosebumps. Our analysis since then shows it to be the first high-confidence emission line ever seen in 50 years of studying GRBs.”

A paper about the discovery appears in the July 26 edition of the journal Science.

When matter interacts with light, the energy can be absorbed and reemitted in characteristic ways. These interactions can brighten or dim particular colors (or energies), producing key features visible when the light is spread out, rainbow-like, in a spectrum.

These features can reveal a wealth of information, such as the chemical elements involved in the interaction. At higher energies, spectral features can uncover specific particle processes, such as matter and antimatter annihilating to produce gamma rays.

“While some previous studies have reported possible evidence for absorption and emission features in other GRBs, subsequent scrutiny revealed that all of these could just be statistical fluctuations.

What we see in the BOAT is different,” said coauthor Om Sharan Salafia at INAF-Brera Observatory in Milan, Italy. “We’ve determined that the odds this feature is just a noise fluctuation are less than one chance in half a billion.”

GRBs are the most powerful explosions in the cosmos and emit copious amounts of gamma rays, the highest-energy form of light. The most common type occurs when the core of a massive star exhausts its fuel, collapses, and forms a rapidly spinning black hole.

Matter falling into the black hole powers oppositely directed particle jets that blast through the star’s outer layers at nearly the speed of light. We detect GRBs when one of these jets points almost directly toward Earth.

The BOAT, formally known as GRB 221009A, erupted Oct. 9, 2022, and promptly saturated most of the gamma-ray detectors in orbit, including those on Fermi. This prevented them from measuring the most intense part of the blast.

Reconstructed observations, coupled with statistical arguments, suggest the BOAT, if part of the same population as previously detected GRBs, was likely the brightest burst to appear in Earth’s skies in 10,000 years.

The putative emission line appears almost 5 minutes after the burst was detected and well after it had dimmed enough to end saturation effects for Fermi.

The line persisted for at least 40 seconds, and the emission reached a peak energy of about 12 MeV (million electron volts). For comparison, the energy of visible light ranges from 2 to 3 electron volts.

So what produced this spectral feature? The team thinks the most likely source is the annihilation of electrons and their antimatter counterparts, positrons.

“When an electron and a positron collide, they annihilate, producing a pair of gamma rays with an energy of 0.511 MeV,” said coauthor Gor Oganesyan at Gran Sasso Science Institute and Gran Sasso National Laboratory

in L’Aquila, Italy. “Because we’re looking into the jet, where matter is moving at near light speed, this emission becomes greatly blueshifted and pushed toward much higher energies.”

If this interpretation is correct, to produce an emission line peaking at 12 MeV, the annihilating particles had to have been moving toward us at about 99.9% the speed of light.

“After decades of studying these incredible cosmic explosions, we still don’t understand the details of how these jets work,” noted Elizabeth Hays, the Fermi project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

“Finding clues like this remarkable emission line will help scientists investigate this extreme environment more deeply.”

Kamala Was Made ‘Rural Broadband Czar’ Overseeing $42bn Program That Has Yet to Connect Anyone to Internet.

Joe Biden tapped Kamala Harris to serve as the rural broadband czar in 2021. Part of her task was overseeing the implementation of a $42 billion program to connect Americans in rural and remote parts of the country to the Internet. According to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) member Brendan Carr, however, after almost 1,000 days, not a single person has actually been connected to the web.

“Hundreds of broadband infrastructure builders are now sounding the alarm, writing that the $42 billion plan to expand Internet has been wired to fail,” FCC Commissioner Carr wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He added: “President Biden put VP Harris in charge of this effort back in 2021 and 982 days later not [one] person has been connected.”

The National Pulse reported on the rural broadband program’s looming failure in June, noting that no project receiving funds from the $42 billion plan will break ground before 2025. Internet service providers (ISPs) and lawmakers on Capitol Hill contend the Biden-Harris government’s burdensome regulations—including climate change mandates, union worker requirements, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies—have brought progress on expanding rural Internet access to a halt.

Additionally, the ISPs point to attempts by the Biden-Harris Commerce Department to regulate consumer rates in a manner beyond the agency’s authority as a reason for the program’s ineffectiveness. This could soon change with the recent Supreme Court ruling effectively ending Chevron deference, which allowed for such instances of regulatory overreach.

Commissioner Carr has warned that the Biden-Harris government estimates claiming the program is on track to break ground in 2025 and see substantial progress by 2026 are overly optimistic. According to Carr, the projects overseen by Harris won’t be near completion in many underserved areas until 2030.

Federal Judge Rules Against Free Speech in Elementary Schools

1/2

District Court Judge David Carter delivered a crushing blow against free speech rights in elementary schoolsin an outrageous case out of Orange County. Principal Jesus Becerra at Viejo Elementary punished a seven-year-old girl named B.B. in the lawsuit for writing “any life” under a “Black Lives Matter” picture.Judge Carterissued a sweeping decision thatsaid that she has no free speech rights in the matter due to her age and that the school is allowed to engage in raw censorship. He is now being appealed. (Are you fucking kidding me?)

The message from theschool seems to be that black lives matter but free speech does not. The school found a kindred spirit in Judge David Carter.

After a lesson on Martin Luther King, B.B. gave her picture to a friend, believing the inclusive image of four shapes of different races and the words would be comforting to a friend. However, when that child showed the picture to a parent, a complaint was filed that B.B.’s picture was insensitive and offensive.Becerra responded by disciplining the child for her inclusive picture.

Becerra should be fired, but his extreme views and lack of judgment is hardly unique in education. The far greater damage was created by Carter’s opinion.

Judge Carter ruled that B.B. has no free speech to protect due to her age,but that “students have the right to be free from speech that denigrates their race while at school.”

Judge Carter added that “an elementary school … is not a marketplace of ideas… Thus, the downside of regulating speech there is not as significant as it is in high schools, where students are approaching voting age and controversial speech could spark conducive conversation.” (What? Remove the guy from the bench, CA is nuts)

The court leaves a vacuum of protected rights that he fills with what seems unchecked authority for the school:“a parent might second-guess (the principal’s) conclusion, but his decision to discipline B.B. belongs to him, not the federal courts.”

The Pacific Legal Foundation, has now filed a petition with the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of Chelsea Boyle and her child, B.B…

These 2 US cities are the most vulnerable to solar storms, scientists say

July 26, 2024

As we approach solar maximum — the most active period in the solar cycle — it's no surprise that scientists are looking into the effects of geomagnetic storms on Earth.

While increased solar activity often leads to brilliant showings of auroras, it also can wreak havoc on our technological systems here on Earth.

We most commonly see interference in radio transmissions during strong geomagnetic storms, but geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) have been known to take out power lines and transformers, too.

A team from the British Geological Survey (BGS) has evaluated the vulnerability of cities' power grids and determined that two American cities are especially at risk during a geomagnetic storm: Milwaukee and Washington, D.C.

Lauren Orr of the BGS suggests various reasons as to why these two cities are particularly vulnerable, including "electrical conductivity of the ground, the physical construction of the power grid in those areas, or the location of the auroral currents in the sky."

Now, this isn't a red-alert emergency yet — most solar storms we've experienced in the last 100 years haven't been strong enough to wipe out a power grid. But if something like the 1859 Carrington Event, the strongest recorded solar storm in history, were to happen again, the problems would be severe.

Orr therefore posits that we should monitor cities like Milwaukee and Washington, D.C., to further learn what can be done to protect their power grids.

"Network science is now a common tool to quantify the resilience and robustness of power grids to both deliberate attacks and those caused by random failures or natural disasters," she said in a statement.

"Having previously had great success using network science to uncover patterns within the auroral electrojet, we would again combine the fields of network science and space weather to capture the network response to GICs."

In my view, Judge Carter is dead wrong, though I expecthe will find support among some of the judges on the Ninth Circuit.

The Court applies the famous ruling in Tinker v. Des Moines Indep. Cmty. Sch. Dist., 393 U.S. 503 (1969), as a license for sweeping censorship and discipline.Yet, the Court held in Tinker that students have free speech rights and that any restrictions require evidence of “interference, actual or nascent, with the schools’ work or collision with the rights of other students to be secure and to be let alone.” It then imposes a high standard that it must “materially disrupt[] classwork or involves substantial disorder or invasion of the rights of others.” This disruption must be “caused by something more than a mere desire to avoid the discomfort and unpleasantness that always accompany an unpopular viewpoint.”

However, what is more disturbingis the disconnection of the right from anything but a narrow functionalist view of free speech. In my new book, “The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage,”I criticize the functionalist approachesthat tie the protection of free speech to itsfunction in advancing a democracy.

I argue for a return to the view of free speech as a natural or human right— a view that was popular at the beginning of our Republic but soon lost to functionalist rationales. Those rationales allow for the type of endless trade-offs evident in the Carter decision.

Carter’s functionalist or instrumentalist approachmakes it easier to simply discard any free speech rights in elementary students. In my view, they have free speech rights as human beings as do their parents.

UnderCarter’s approach, schools can engage in a wide array of indoctrinationby declaringopposing political and social views to be “disruptive.”

Ironically, my book criticizes Judge Carter in another case over his failure to consider free speech concerns. In his decision in the January 6th case involving John Eastman, Carter dismisses his arguments that he had a right to present his novel theory against certification of the election.

While many of us disagreed with Eastman, there was a concern over efforts to strip lawyers of their bar licenses and even use criminal charges against such figures. However, what concerned me the most was sweeping language used by Carter in his decision.

Carter’s narrow view of free speech and his expansive view of state authority is hardly unique. B.B. is devoid of free speech protections even in this outrageously abusive case. The reason is that she is not of an age where her speech is viewed as worthy of protection. It is an example of the distortive and corrosive effect of functionalism in free speech jurisprudence in my view.

@CollinRugg

REPORT: The media is currently rewriting history in an effort to help the Harris campaign.

Here are 5 hoaxes the media has launched in the past week.

5. CBS claims Trump is lying by saying Harris donated to Minnesota Freedom Fund, bailing out “dangerous criminals” during the George Floyd riots.

Harris promoted the fund on X and encouraged people to donate.

4. President Biden “dropped out” to save democracy.

Biden was forcibly removed by top Democrats who reportedly made threats after he indicated he wasn’t going anywhere.

3. JD Vance had s*x with a couch cushion.

The AP fact checked the claim as false but then removed the fact check because it “didn’t go through our standing editing process.”

2. Kamala Harris was not a DEI pick for Vice President.

President Biden made it clear in 2020 that he was picking his VP based on gender and skin color, confirming that Kamala was indeed a DEI pick.

1. Kamala Harris was never the Border Czar.

The media spent the past week scrubbing *their own* reports since 2021 that Kamala was in charge of the border.

Falcon 9 Returns to Flight

July 25, 2024

SpaceX submitted its mishap report to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regarding Falcon 9’s launch anomaly on July 11, 2024.

SpaceX’s investigation team, with oversight from the FAA, was able to identify the most probable cause of the mishap and associated corrective actions to ensure the success of future missions.

Post-flight data reviews confirmed Falcon 9’s first stage booster performed nominally through ascent, stage separation, and a successful droneship landing.

During the first burn of Falcon 9’s second stage engine, a liquid oxygen leak developed within the insulation around the upper stage engine.

The cause of the leak was identified as a crack in a sense line for a pressure sensor attached to the vehicle’s oxygen system.

This line cracked due to fatigue caused by high loading from engine vibration and looseness in the clamp that normally constrains the line.

Despite the leak, the second stage engine continued to operate through the duration of its first burn, and completed its engine shutdown, where it entered the coast phase of the mission in the intended elliptical parking orbit.

A second burn of the upper stage engine was planned to circularize the orbit ahead of satellite deployment.

However, the liquid oxygen leak on the upper stage led to the excessive cooling of engine components, most importantly those associated with delivery of ignition fluid to the engine.

As a result, the engine experienced a hard start rather than a controlled burn, which damaged the engine hardware and caused the upper stage to subsequently lose attitude control.

Even so, the second stage continued to operate as designed, deploying the Starlink satellites and successfully completing stage passivation, a process of venting down stored energy on the stage, which occurs at the conclusion of every Falcon mission.

Following deployment, the Starlink team made contact with 10 of the satellites to send early burn commands in an attempt to raise their altitude.

Unfortunately, the satellites were in an enormously high-drag environment with a very low perigee of only 135 km above the Earth. As a result, all 20 Starlink satellites from this launch re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere.

By design, Starlink satellites fully demise upon reentry, posing no threat to public safety. To-date, no debris has been reported after the successful deorbit of Starlink satellites.

SpaceX engineering teams have performed a comprehensive and thorough review of all SpaceX vehicles and ground systems to ensure we are putting our best foot forward as we return to flight.

For near term Falcon launches, the failed sense line and sensor on the second stage engine will be removed. The sensor is not used by the flight safety system and can be covered by alternate sensors already present on the engine.

The design change has been tested at SpaceX’s rocket development facility in McGregor, Texas, with enhanced qualification analysis and oversight by the FAA and involvement from the SpaceX investigation team.

An additional qualification review, inspection, and scrub of all sense lines and clamps on the active booster fleet led to a proactive replacement in select locations.

Safety and reliability are at the core of SpaceX’s operations.

It would not have been possible to achieve our current cadence without this focus, and thanks to the pace we’ve been able to launch, we’re able to gather unprecedented levels of flight data and are poised to rapidly return to flight, safely and with increased reliability.

Our missions are of critical importance – safely carrying astronauts, customer payloads, and thousands of Starlink satellites to orbit – and they rely on the Falcon family of rockets being one of the most reliable in the world.

We thank the FAA and our customers for their ongoing work and support.

“And his Appalachian family is originally from Jackson, Kentucky, home of the Breathitt County Bobcats. This was where the young James David spent most of his summers and other vacations.”

Previous Secret Service code names include:

Donald J. Trump – “Mogul.”

Joe Biden – “Celtic.”

Barack Obama – “Renegade.”

George W. Bush – “Trailblazer.”

Ronald Reagan – “Rawhide.”

Mike Pence – “Hoosier.”

Kamala Harris’s codename is “Pioneer.”

“All Men are Created Equal”: University of Oregon Loses Key Motion in Free Speech Case==1/2

We previously discussed the free speech lawsuit of Portland State University ProfessorBruce Gilley who was blocked from the Twitter accountof the University of Oregon’s Division of Equity and Inclusion aftertweeting “All men are created equal.”The court just granted a preliminary injunction holding that there was a substantial likelihood that he would prevail on the merits against the University of Oregon.

Portland State University Professor Bruce Gilley was excluded from a Diversity Twitter page by the Communication Manager of the Division of Equity and Inclusion at the University of Oregon. (The manager is identified as “tova stabin” who the court notes “spells her name with all lowercase letters.”).Stabin has now left the school.

In Gilley v. Stabin, Judge Hernández previously offered this background:

On or about June 14, 2022, Defendant stabin, in hercapacity as Communication Manager, posted a “racism interruptor”to the Division’s Twitter page, @UOEquity. The Tweet read “You can interrupt racism,” and the prompt read, “It sounded like you just said_____. Is that really what you meant?”

Plaintiff Bruce Gilley, a professor at Portland State University, responded to the Tweet the same day it was posted with the entry “all men are created equal.” Plaintiff is critical of diversity, equity, and inclusion (“DEI”) principles, andintended his tweet to promote a colorblindness viewpoint. Plaintiff tagged @uoregon and @UOEquity in his re-tweet. Also on June 14, 2022, Defendant stabin blocked Plaintiff from the @UOEquity account. Once he was blocked, Plaintiff could no longer view, reply to, or retweet any of @UOEquity’s posts….

Plaintiff later filed a public records request with the University of Oregon to inquire about the policy VPEI uses to block Twitter users. … The University initially responded thatthere was no written policyand that “the staff member that administers the VPEI Twitter account and social media has the autonomy to manage the accounts and uses professional judgment when deciding to block users.” …Plaintiff also asked whether other Twitter users had been blocked from @UOEquity, and the University responded that two other users were blocked. … Plaintiff asserts that “[b]oth of the other users have expressed politically conservative viewpoints, including criticizing posts of the @UOEquity account.” Am. Compl. ¶ 70.

On June 27, 2022, Defendant stabin responded to an email from University of Oregon employee Kelly Pembleton, who was helping respond to Plaintiff’s public records request. Defendant stabin sent the following in response to Pembleton’s request for a list of the users she had blocked on @UOEquity:

“Doesn’t take real long. I’ve only ever blocked three people. Here is the list. I’m assuming the issue is this guy Bruce Gilley. He was not just being obnoxious, but bringing obnoxious people to the site some. We don’t have much following and it’s the social I pay least attention to. Here’s a screenshot of everyone I’ve ever blocked. I hardly do it (and barely know how to).”

Minutes later, Defendant stabin sent another email to Pembleton about the records request. The email reads, in pertinent part:

“Oh, I see. It is Bruce who brought it. Not surprising. He was commenting on one of the “interrupt racism” posts, as I recall talking something about the oppression of white men, if I recall. Really, they are just there to trip you up and make trouble. Ugh. I’m around at home for a quick zoom about it.’

The court previously denied the university’s motion to dismiss. The University of Oregon then continued to spend public dollars to try to defend its right to censor academics and students in this arbitrary way. Now it has lost the key fight over the preliminary injunction.

In his decision, Judge Hernández zeroed in on the guidelines allowing for the censorship of offensive or hateful speech:

“Plaintiff has shown that the two provisions of the =social media guidelines he challenges create a risk of censoring speech that is protected by the First Amendment. As Plaintiff points out, speech that is “hateful,” “racist,” or “otherwise offensive” is protected by the Constitution. Pl. Br. 3 (citing Snyder v. Phelps, 562 U.S. 443, 454 (2011); Cohen v. California, 403 U.S. 15, 25 (1971); Am. Freedom Def. Initiative v. King County, 904 F.3d 1126, 1131 (9th Cir. 2018)). The Court held that the @UOEquity account was a limited public forum, meaning that any restrictions on speech must be reasonable and viewpoint-neutral. Op. & Ord. 25.5 Plaintiff is correct that the provisions allowing the Communications Manager to block “hateful,” “racist,” and “otherwise offensive” speech create a risk of viewpoint discrimination because “[w]hat is offensive or hateful is often in the eye of the beholder.” Pl. Br. 4. If Plaintiff was blocked for posting “all men are created equal” because the post was viewed as hateful, racist, or otherwise offensive, such blocking would violate the Constitution. Deleting or hiding the post for that reason would also violate the Constitution.”==

That is why this decision could have a lasting impact for higher education. The Oregon language is not dissimilar from many schools limiting campus speech under vague guidelines.

Notably, we have discussed howthese schools have been losing in federal courts in their effort to maintain censorship systems. Yet, administrators continue undeterred in pursuing these policies with the support of their faculty.

Oregon has long been known for radical viewpoints in academia. I previously criticized theschool policy to monitor student speech on social media and off campusas part of its speech regulations.

Theschool previously gave special recognitionto University of California (Santa Barbara) Professor Mireille Miller-Youngwho criminally assaulted pro-life advocateson the campus of the University of California at Santa Barbara. At Oregon, she was honoredas a featured speaker at the University of Oregon’s Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies. Part of its “black feminist speaker series,” Miller-Young’s work was highlighted by the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of English to show “the radical potential of black feminism in the work that we do on campus and in our everyday lives.”

It is unlikely that the legislature will object to this expensive fight to preserve the right to censor speech. The state itself has moved aggressively against free speechrights of doctors and others in areas like abortion. However, thepeople of Oregon should consider the use of their tax dollarsto seek to limit the “indispensable right” of free speech and to give figures like stabin such discretion over what speech to allow on campus.

Powerful wildfires devastating Canada captured in satellite imagery

July 25, 2024

Quick-moving wildfires continue to burn across Western Canada, keeping the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s GOES-R series satellites busy as they monitor hotspots and smoke plumes around the clock.

On Wednesday evening (July 24) in Jasper National Park, the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies, thousands of residents and tourists had to be evacuated as powerful fires scorched through the southern part of the community.

According to the Associated Press, there were "significant losses" across the area as structures were burned to the ground and other nearby towns were also forced to flee.

These fires began on Monday (July 22) following a significant fire that also occurred in Western Canada on May 10; that fire, in British Columbia, expanded and burned more than 13,000 acres of land in just three days.

Firefighters, weather forecasters and community leaders rely on satellites to provide a wider scope of fire and smoke movement; they use images taken by the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) instrument aboard each of the GOES-R satellites to aid with such monitoring needs.

Using different spectral bands, the wavelengths from each of these instruments' channels can pick up smoke signals and identify hotspots during a wildfire, pinpoint the locations of those signals, and produce powerful images to paint a picture in near real-time of the growth and/or demise of each event.

By combining these snapshots with ground observations from officials and firefighters, even wildfire and smoke forecasts can be significantly improved.

This benefits firefighting efforts because it helps teams better understand each particular fire and also can help communities have more lead time to evacuate if a fast-moving blaze takes a quick turn when the winds shift or if new fires ignite from another's embers.

Wildfire smoke forecasts are also important for other parts of North America downwind of the plumes.

By detecting the intensity and movement of the smoke, air quality alerts can be issued to help communities, especially in major cities, prepare for the incoming impacts that at times can last for days and cause health issues — particularly for those with respiratory issues.

FBI Trump questionnaire exposes 'divisive partisan politics' at bureau, former agent says

Former FBI agent and Fox contributor Nicole Parker said the questionnaire and other similar matters have inspired a loss

"Who approved… what is termed as the Trump questionnaire within the FBI that was done?"

"So the document you're asking about is an interview outline that we only recently learned about, and in my view is completely inappropriate," Wray said. "I asked my team to get to the bottom of what happened and to ensure that doesn't happen again. And I've learned that it's not an FBI form, that its use was isolated, that it was created not by an FBI employee, but by an outside contractor. And that individual is no longer affiliated with the FBI."

Parker also added that because of the questionnaire matter and other similar incidents within the FBI, "Americans and many FBI employees have lost trust."

FBI director says bureau identified origin of Trump litmus test memo, removed contractor responsible

Director Christopher Wray confirmed Just the News' reporting on this memo, but said the incident was isolated and the form was created by a contractor.

Christopher Wray told Congress Wednesday that his staff identified the source of the litmus test memo that showed security reviewers asked about a bureau employee's support for Donald Trump, opinion about the COVID-19 vaccine, and views of the Second Amendment and called the memo "inappropriate."

The incident was isolated and the form was created by a contractor.

"So, the document you are asking about is an interview outline we only recently learned about and, in my view, is completely inappropriate," Wray told the House Judiciary Committee, in response to a question from Wisconsin GOP Rep. Tom Tiffany.

"I asked my team to get to the bottom of what happened and to ensure that it doesn't happen again. And, I've learned that its not an FBI form, its use was isolated, and that it was created, not by an FBI employee, but an outside contractor and that individual is no longer affiliated with the FBI."

Discovery of 'dark oxygen' from deep-sea metal lumps could trigger rethink of origins of life

July 25, 2024

Potato-size metallic nodules strewn across the Pacific Ocean seafloor produce oxygen in complete darkness and without any help from living organisms, new research reveals.

The discovery of this deep-sea oxygen, dubbed "dark oxygen," is the first time scientists have ever observed oxygen being generated without the involvement of organisms and challenges what we know about the emergence of life on Earth, researchers say.

"When we first got this data, we thought the sensors were faulty, because every study ever done in the deep sea has only seen oxygen being consumed rather than produced," study lead author Andrew Sweetman, a professor and leader of the seafloor ecology and biogeochemistry research group at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), said in a statement.

But when the instruments kept showing the same results, Sweetman and his colleagues knew they "were onto something ground-breaking and unthought-of," he said.

The results, published Monday (July 22) in the journal Nature Geoscience, suggest that small metallic nodules found in the north Pacific's Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) produce oxygen through seawater electrolysis, where seawater splits into oxygen and hydrogen in the presence of an electric charge.

This charge may come from the difference in electric potential that exists between metal ions within the nodules, which leads to a redistribution of electrons, according to the study.

So-called polymetallic nodules are common on the ocean's abyssal plains, which are flat regions of the seafloor between 10,000 and 20,000 feet (3,000 to 6,000 m) below the ocean surface.

These nodules mostly contain oxides of iron and manganese, but they also hold metals like cobalt, nickel and lithium, as well as rare earth elements such as cerium that are essential components of electronics and low-carbon technologies.

Sweetman and his colleagues originally set out to study the potential impacts of mining polymetallic nodules on the seafloor ecosystem in the CCZ, an abyssal plain spanning 1.7 million square miles (4.5 million square kilometers) between Hawaii and Mexico.

As part of this assessment, the team measured changes in oxygen concentrations using special experimental chambers at multiple locations.

Typically, oxygen levels decline the deeper in the ocean scientists look, as less light is available, meaning there are fewer photosynthetic organisms and therefore lower oxygen production.

But instead of the expected decline in oxygen, the data showed steady emissions from the seabed.

The discovery of dark oxygen 13,000 feet (4,000 m) below the waves, where no light can penetrate, challenges scientists' belief that Earth's oxygen is only naturally produced through photosynthesis (and through oxidizing ammonia, but this results in tiny amounts that are immediately consumed).

That, in turn, raises new questions about the origins of life on Earth roughly 3.7 billion years ago, Sweetman said.

"For aerobic life to begin on the planet, there has to be oxygen and our understanding has been that Earth's oxygen supply began with photosynthetic organisms," he said.

"But we now know that there is oxygen produced in the deep sea, where there is no light. I think we therefore need to revisit questions like: where could aerobic life have begun?"

The results also raise new concerns about potentially mining polymetallic nodules, which could represent a vital source of oxygen for deep-sea ecosystems, Sweetman said.

"Through this discovery, we have generated many unanswered questions and I think we have a lot to think about in terms of how we mine these modules, which are effectively batteries in a rock."

U.S. military urged to embrace smallsat revolution

July 26, 2024

The U.S. military has begun to recognize the utility of small satellites, with programs like the Space Development Agency’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture leveraging smallsats for missile tracking and communications. However, a new report argues that the U.S. Space Force has yet to fully commit the resources to capitalize on this technology at scale.

“The Space Force, Congress, and the industrial base must adjust old paradigms built around large, legacy space systems with long and costly development timelines and move toward a hybrid approach that includes both smallsats and large, exquisite satellite systems,” says a report released July 25 by the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies.

The report calls on the U.S. military to fully leverage the innovations in small satellite technology to enhance its space capabilities and maintain superiority in a contested domain.

Smallsats have become increasingly popular in both commercial and military applications due to their lower cost, faster production times, and ability to be deployed in large numbers.

This proliferation allows for greater resilience and redundancy in space operations, the report says, arguing that proliferation is crucial to maintaining what the military terms “space superiority” — the ability to operate freely in space while denying adversaries the same capability.

Smallsats, typically weighing less than 1,200 kg, have gained significant traction in recent years.

Commercial players like SpaceX and Planet have demonstrated the power of large constellations of small satellites for various applications, from global internet coverage to Earth observation.

Charles Galbreath, lead author of the report, says the Space Force must embrace the smallsat revolution or risk losing the high ground in space.

“Our adversaries, particularly China and Russia, are developing sophisticated counterspace weapons aimed at our legacy satellite systems.

SmallSats offer a way to enhance our resilience and operational capabilities in this new environment.”

The report recommends the Department of Defense boost production rates, strengthen supply chains, and increase funding to support large-scale smallsat deployment.

Matt Gaetz introduces bill to bar states from sentencing presidential candidates in election season

July 25, 2024

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., introduced legislation Thursday aimed at blocking state officials and bureaucrats from intervening in elections through politicized prosecutions and sentencings.

The Prevention of Election Interference Act of 2024 would bar the sentencing of presidential candidates in court 120 days before a presidential election. It also would prevent the candidate from being sentenced 60 days after a presidential election.

"Presidential candidates should have the right to campaign without interference, regardless of their party affiliation!" Gaetz said in a statement to Breitbart News. "Over the past two years, state officials and unelected bureaucrats have been keeping President Trump tied up in courtwith dubious charges, hindering his ability to campaign nationwide."

He added that Trump should be allowed to campaign freely without any interference from outside parties.

GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump has faced a litany of court cases amid his 2024 run, which he has deemed part of a politicized effort to interfere in his campaign.

Trump shooter had depressive disorder: Fmr. Secret Service agent

“We’ll need to go back and draw a timeline of his behaviors, and certainly, his internet searches are part of that. … Him researching assassins is definitely a sign. But as we know, America’s fascinated with assassins,” Eckloff added.

According to the FBI, on July 6, the day Crooks registered for the Butler rally, he also ran a Google search on his computer asking how far Lee Harvey Oswald was from President John F. Kennedy when Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas in 1963.

Crooks, a 20-year-old nursing home employee who graduated from community college last spring, had searched online for information about Trump and Biden and had photos of both men on his phone.

The newspaper also reported that photos of U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and a member of the British royal family were also on Crooks’ phone. Wray testified that Crooks was using an encrypted messaging app on his phone.

A search of Crooks’ phone by the FBI also determined that he had conducted online searches about a shooting in which a teenage gunman, Ethan Crumbley, killed four high school students in Michigan as well as information about major depressive disorder, the rally in Butler, and the Democratic National Convention.

NBC News reported other online searches run by Crooks in the months leading up to the rally included one on explosive materials and chemical compounds as well as improvised explosive devices and the Department of Homeland Security.

The report indicated there were more than 14,000 links and photos found on Crooks’ phoneincluding one photo of the rally that was taken before Trump took the stage.

National Whistleblower Day Continues Tradition of Celebrating Whistleblowers

This article features Government Accountability Project and was originally published here.

On July 30, whistleblowers, advocates, and government officials will gather on Capitol Hill to celebrate National Whistleblower Day. The day continues a tradition of celebrating whistleblowers, which predates the designation of July 30 as National Whistleblower Day.

As whistleblower supporters gear up to celebrate on July 30, WNN looks back on the history of the day and the organized celebrations of whistleblowers.

No return date set for Starliner crew, NASA says

Updated: Jul 26, 2024 / 06:27 AM CDT

NASA and Boeing leadership confirmed Thursday that a return date for the Starliner crew awaiting voyage back to Earth has yet to be set.

Steve Stich, manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, and Mark Nappi, Boeing’s vice president and program manager of the Boeing Commercial Crew Program, provided updates on the Boeing Starliner mission and the two astronauts who are on the 49th day of what was supposed to be eight days in orbit at the International Space Station.

Stich confirmed there is still no return date for the Starliner crew and said NASA’s top priority is to bring the astronauts back to Earth safely.

Engineers last week completed testing on a spare thruster in the New Mexico desert to try to understand what went wrong during docking and to prepare for the trip home.

Five thrusters failed as the capsule approached the ISS on June 6, a day after liftoff. Four have since been reactivated.

“The last several weeks have been really helpful in understanding the helium and thruster anomalies and how to address these problems for future flights,” Nappi said.

“That’s been the real goal here, is to be able to address future flights and gain the confidence that we needed for this mission.”

The Starliner capsule has been docked at the International Space Station since June 6. It should have returned with its NASA test pilots by mid-June, but thruster failures and helium leaks prompted NASA and Boeing to extend its stay.

Boeing had previously said that astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams could use the Starliner to return to Earth immediately if the situation demands it, but that’s not the case. Both Wilmore and Williams said they were confident they’d return home safely despite the delay.

NASA and Boeing said the capsule’s batteries are performing well despite the extended stay.

“I feel confident that if we had to, if there was a problem with the International Space Station, we could get in our spacecraft, and we could undock, talk to our team, and figure out the best way to come home,” Williams said in a press conference last week.

Although Sunday was the end of the 45-day stay the mission was approved for, NASA and Boeing reassured the public and astronauts it was safe to stay in the capsule at the ISS past the mission’s initial window.

Starliner was plagued with issues before it even launched. The spacecraft’s launch was scrubbed twice, including one right before liftoff. Helium leaks were also reported.

Both agencies did not indicate when the astronauts will return to Earth but are hopeful for a return in the coming weeks. There also has been no word on whether the agencies plan to use another spacecraft to get the astronauts home.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody on Thursday announced civil and criminal court victories over abortion activists attacking pregnancy centers.

Last March, Moody sued members of the violent anarchist groups Antifa and Jane’s Revenge for vandalizing three Florida crisis pregnancy center buildings and threatening their staff and clients in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court landmark ruling on abortion.

After the Supreme Court’s decision was leaked to overturn Roe v Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, pro-abortion activists and members of “criminal organizations sought to silence and intimidate crisis pregnancy centers’ workers and clients nationwide by vandalizing or even setting fire to their buildings,” Moody said at the time.

Two Antifa and Jane’s Revenge members, Caleb Hunter Freestone of Miami and Amber Marie Smith-Stewart of Ocoee, participated in at least three attacks against Florida crisis pregnancy centers, The Center Square first reported. Moody’s office also filed a civil action against additional defendants Annarella Rivera and Gabriella Victoria Oropesa, alleging all four defendants violated the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, or FACE Act.

On Thursday, Moody announced her victory securing a settlement, with several defendants pleading guilty to felonies in federal court. The settlement results in a civil judgment and a permanent injunction. Restitution will be ordered to compensate the victim clinics. One defendant will be ordered to pay a $10,000 civil penalty. The defendants who plead guilty face up to 10 years in prison.

The defendants are also permanently banned from being physically present within 100 feet of any crisis pregnancy center.

“We will not allow radicals to threaten and intimidate women seeking help from crisis pregnancy centers or the counselors and health care professionals serving these women and their babies,” Moody said. “In Florida, illegal actions have consequences, and I am proud of the work our attorneys did in this case to make sure these extremists were held accountable.”

The FACE Act provides for civil and criminal penalties against anyone who “by force or threat of force … intentionally … intimidates or interferes with or attempts to … intimidate or interfere with any person because that person is or has been … providing reproductive health services.”

According to the complaint, in May 2022, the defendants damaged the property of South Broward Pregnancy Help Center in Hollywood, including spray painting threats on its property stating, “If abortions aren’t SAFE then neither [sic] are you.”

In June 2022, defendants damaged the property of LifeChoice crisis pregnancy center in Winter Haven, spray painting their facility with threats including “YOUR TIME IS UP!!”; “WE’RE COMING for U.”

In July 2022, defendants damaged the property of Heartbeat of Miami pregnancy center in Hialeah, spray painting threats on its building, including “If abortions aren’t safe the [sic] neither are you.”

The centers offer free counseling, pregnancy testing, and ultrasound examinations to expectant mothers.

After the Supreme Court’s decision was leaked, dozens of incidents of “arson, vandalism, property theft, and property destruction,” as well as protests, bomb threats and assaults were initially reported against churches, prolife organizations, and individuals.

In June 2022, Jane’s Revenge called on activists to disrupt society, saying “we need the state to feel our full wrath … We need them to be afraid of us” and “whoever you are and wherever you are, we are asking for you to do what you can to make your anger known … To those who work to oppress us: If abortion isn’t safe, you aren’t either. We are everywhere.”

After 19 attorneys general requested the U.S. Department of Justice investigate violence being committed against pro-life groups in June 2022, the FBI said it would investigate the attacks being committed against prolife and faith-based groups.

It remains unclear when the FBI’s findings will be published.

Benny Johnson

@bennyjohnson

🚨SCOOP: The REAL Reason Trump’s Assassin was not Eliminated on the Rooftop before Firing on Trump

This Information comes from a first-hand source of highest credentials.

The attached video is a view from the second story window of the AGR building in Butler, Pennsylvania. The rooftop it overlooks is where Crooks fired on Trump. This room was the overwatch view where a Butler County SWAT sniper team was stationed at the direction of the Secret Service for the Trump rally.

The Secret Service is responsible for stationing all protective teams for the President. Local and State law enforcement officers go where they’re told.

The snipers in this location should have *easily* been able to engage Crooks before he ever came close to scope site of Trump.

Yet, Crooks was able to fire that day without anyone engaging from this position. Why?

That answer is total and complete incompetence from Secret Service.

There was a three man SWAT sniper team located in this position. One member of the team went home early — not sure how this was allowed but it happened. The remaining two snipers positioned in this room were notified that a suspicious individual [Crooks] was lurking outside the building. One team member left his position to investigate, leaving just one sniper with overwatch of the roof.

The investigating team member found nothing and in the process of returning to his position realized he had forgotten his access card into the building. The last remaining sniper with overwatch LEFT [!!!] the position to retrieve his team member locked outside.

Crooks crawled across the roof and fired on Trump while this fully-equipped sniper nest with a perfect view of Crooks assassin position was left completely UNMANNED.

Obvious infuriating questions:

- Who was running command that allowed this fatal tactical error?

- Who gave the order to abandon post?

- How was there not an officer on the roof who could engage Crooks directly?

- Why was there not overwatch from the water tower - a far superior position than this?

We need a Congressional Select Committee to investigate the Trump Assassination immediately.

Akima lands $480 million Space Force contract to modernize Satellite Control Network

July 25, 2024

The U.S. Space Force awarded Akima’s subsidiary Five Rivers Analytics a $480 million 10-year contract to support and modernize the Satellite Control Network — a decades-old system of 19 globally distributed parabolic antennas spread across several locations worldwide.

Akima, an Alaska Native Corporation-owned defense contractor, won the contract dubbed STORMS (Satellite Control Network Tracking Station Operations, Remote Site and Mission Partner Support).

The STORMS contract is an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) agreement.

This type of contract allows the Space Force to procure services as needed over a specified period.

It succeeds the previous $445 million CAMMO (Consolidated Air Force Satellite Control Network Modifications and Maintenance Operations) contract won by CACI International in 2016.

The Space Force in June announced the first task order under STORMS, valued at $205 million, with a performance period from June 2024 to February 2030.

The Satellite Control Network supports the launch, tracking, control, and maintenance of U.S. government satellites, ensuring they can transmit and receive data effectively and remain operational.

In operation since 1959, the SCN is running out of capacity and in dire need of modernization, the Government Accountability Office warned in a report last year.

“Akima plans to integrate emerging technologies to enhance SCN’s operational efficiency and resilience,” the company said in a news release July 25.

“This aligns with Government Accountability Office recommendations for improving SCN capacity.”

Five Rivers Analytics, the Colorado-based Akima subsidiary, will be responsible for SCN maintenance, management of transportable assets, cybersecurity measures, routine system administration, and communications security functions.
