Connecting the Dots: From oil to orbit

Supported by one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds, Saudi Arabia is stepping up efforts to become a major force in space as commercial activity in the industry rises across the Middle East.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced the creation of Neo Space Group (NSG) May 27 to specifically invest in local and international commercial satellite opportunities.

The plan is to bring various capabilities in-house to build out an operating entity with expertise in satellite communications, Earth observation and navigation.

NSG would also have a satellite and space-focused venture capital fund for early-stage investments.

Spokespeople for the sovereign wealth fund said NSG would initially focus more on downstream space capabilities — and not areas such as rocket launches — although it’s unclear whether the company would seek to build its own satellites as the strategy is still being refined.

“The establishment of NSG marks an important milestone in the development of the growing satellite and space sector in Saudi Arabia,” said Omar Al-Madhi, PIF’s co-head of direct investments for the Middle East and Africa, “and the ambition to be a leading commercial player in the global satellite sector.”

Saudi Arabia’s new industry champion follows the creation of its space agency last year, and the recent launch of a government-backed accelerator program promising space startups specialized training, networking opportunities and up to around $16 million in financial support.

Like other sovereign wealth funds in the Middle East, PIF is looking to space and other growth industries to diversify its economy as the end of the oil era draws near.

YAHSAT’S TRANSFORMATION

United Arab Emirates, another major oil producer in the Middle East, recently bolstered its flagship operator Yahsat with an eyewatering $5.1 billion pledge to buy satellite broadband services until at least 2043.

The UAE government is advancing about $1 billion to Yahsat to cover its latest geostationary spacecraft, Al Yah 4 and Al Yah 5, slated to launch in 2027 and 2028, respectively.

Yahsat is a subsidiary of Mubadala, a UAE sovereign wealth fund that plans to merge the operator with a local geospatial intelligence provider called Bayanat.

Mubadala turned Bayanat into a commercial company a decade ago after carving it out of the UAE Armed Forces. Bayanat is currently majority-owned by UAE-based artificial intelligence and cloud provider G42, which Mubadala partly owns.

Subject to regulatory approvals the companies expect to get this year, the combined group would seek out synergies between satellite communications and remote sensing with the help of advances in AI.

According to Yahsat group CEO Ali Al Hashemi, the emerging market for direct-to-smartphone satellite services could help significantly expand UAE’s international space presence.

He said Yahsat has tentative plans to order and deploy a small number of prototype spacecraft as early as 2028 to test connectivity services from space directly to everyday, mass-market devices.

The company would order 150 commercial satellites if tests go well, Al Hashemi told SpaceNews in an interview. A second wave of 150 satellites to complete the network could be built in the UAE, either by Yahsat or a local partner.

A constellation contract like this would be a significant development for the UAE’s Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre, which has only developed a handful of LEO Earth observation satellites since its creation in 2006.

Yahsat announced June 10 it had contracted two LEO satellites from Europe’s Airbus as part of its order for Al Yah 4 and Al Yah 5.

Al Hashemi said Yahsat has not finalized a plan for the 150-kilogram LEO spacecraft, but that they could be used to test direct-to-smartphone capabilities.

Yahsat currently provides mobile voice and data services to specialized handsets from Europe to the Asia Pacific via two aging L-band satellites.

SpaceX is due to launch the Thuraya 4-NGS satellite this year to significantly upgrade Yahsat’s mobile satellite service network, which Yahsat acquired in 2018 when it snapped up fellow Emirati operator Thuraya.

It would be the first satellite launched for the Thuraya service since 2008. Other oil-rich countries in the region also seek a larger piece of the global commercial space industry, but success will require more than financial investment alone.

“It’s clear the Middle East sovereign wealth funds can bring a lot of money, and space is expensive,” said Armand Musey, a satellite industry analyst and founder of advisory firm Summit Ridge Group.

“However, as shown by the relative success of the European space industry and SpaceX, today’s space industry also requires real ingenuity that money alone does not provide.”

Reformist Masoud Pezeshkian has been elected as Iran's new president, beating his hardline conservative rival Saeed Jalili.

The vote was declared in Dr Pezeshkian's favour after he secured 53.3% of the more than 30 million votes counted. Mr Jalili polled at 44.3%.

The run-off came after no candidate secured a majority in the first round of the election on 28 June, which saw a historically low voter turnout of 40%.

The election was called after Iran’s previous president Ebrahim Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash in May, in which seven others also died.

The leaders of China, India and Russia have all congratulated Dr Pezeshkian on his victory.

Even before the final results were declared by Iran's interior ministry, Dr Pezeshkian's supporters had taken to the streets in Tehran and a number of other cities to celebrate.

Videos posted on social media showed mostly young people dancing and waving the signature green flag of his campaign, while passing cars sounded their horns.

Dr Pezeshkian, a 71-year-old heart surgeon and member of the Iranian parliament, is critical of Iran’s notorious morality police and caused a stir after promising “unity and cohesion”, as well as an end to Iran's “isolation” from the world.

He has also called for “constructive negotiations” with Western powers over a renewal of the faltering 2015 nuclear deal in which Iran agreed to curb its nuclear programme in return for an easing of Western sanctions.

Mars orbiter captures Red Planet scar that's longer than the Grand Canyon

New images published by the European Space Agency have captured a 600-kilometer-long (373-mile-long) snaking scar on Mars' surface in greater detail than ever before.

The Red Planet is full of scratches and scars, and this one, named Aganippe Fossa, is another of these ditch-like grooves with steep walls — more specifically, however, Aganippe Fossa is what's called a "graben."

"We're still unsure of how and when Aganippe Fossa came to be, but it seems likely that it was formed as magma rising underneath the colossal mass of the Tharsis volcanoes caused Mars’s crust to stretch and crack," ESA officials wrote in a recent press release.

As is common in planetary nomenclature, the name "Aganippe Fossa" has its roots in classical mythology. Aganippe, daughter of the river Termessos, was a nymph associated with a spring found at the base of Mount Helicon in Greece.

In homage to its naming origins, Aganippe Fossa appears at the base of one of Mars' largest volcanoes, Arsia Mons.

"Fossa" is then derived from the Latin term for ditch or trench, and refers to a long, narrow depression on the surface of a planet or moon.

The recently published images owe themselves to ESA's Mars Express, Europe's first mission to the Red Planet, which has been orbiting Mars since 2003.

Although its lander, Beagle 2, was lost, the orbiter remains conducting a global investigation of Mars.

It maps minerals, studies the atmosphere, probes beneath the crust and investigates the planet's blob-shaped moons, Phobos and Deimos.

Mars Express captured the new images of Aganippe Fossa with its high resolution stereo camera and revealed the varied surface features of Mars in great detail, showing both clustered, uneven hills and smooth, gently sloping cliffs covered in debris — referred to as hummocky and lobate terrains, respectively.

These terrains are characteristic of Arsia Mons's ring-shaped "aureole," the ESA press release states, in reference to a 100,000-square-kilometer (38,610-square-mile) disk around the base of the volcano, possibly associated with ancient glaciers..

"Intriguingly," the statement continues, "this aureole has only built up on the northwestern flank of the volcano, likely due to prevailing winds from the opposite direction controlling where ice settled over time."

The team also describes windblown dust and sand dynamics of this region of Mars, which create "zebra-like" patterns on the planet's surface as a result of darker material getting deposited on lighter ground.

"The surface here also shows evidence of lava flows, dating from when the volcano was active." the scientists wrote.

Aganippe Fossa is one of many classical albedo features on Mars, which refers to the light and dark features that can be seen on the planet through even an Earth-based telescope.

With space-based orbiters, astronomers have been given unprecedented views of the planet's surface and its intriguing topography.

"The mission has been immensely productive over its lifetime, creating a far fuller and more accurate understanding of our planetary neighbor than ever before," ESA scientists said.

A fake social media account on X that goes by the name "Rabbi Linda Goldstein" has, according to the New York Post, fooled the campaign of Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo.

On June 23, the fake account wrote to Bush's campaign with the suggestion the congresswoman travel to Gaza for a fundraiser.

"I've been bouncing around different cities since my congregation was displaced from Gaza after Israel's invasion on October 7," the fake account posted. "Also — would [Bush] travel to the Gaza border for the fundraiser? The optics could be incredible!"

Bush's finance and engagement director, Ronika Moody, responded: "Cori is interested in hosting in Gaza and it's something she has been trying to plan. Unfortunately, we have not been successful with that opportunity as of yet."

A meteor was spotted crossing the sky in Turkey.

The green fireball was spotted in many across the country including Istanbul and Ankara.

The Turkish Space Agency confirm that the bright light travelling the sky was a meteor.

It explained that colourful light occurs when meteors enter the atmosphere.

The colour varies depending on several factors, such as the chemical composition of the meteor, its speed, and the gases present in the Earth's atmosphere.

Missouri is Suing New York Over First Amendment Right to Vote for President

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey has filed a lawsuit against the state of New York, claiming that the sentencing of former President Donald Trump violates Missourians’ First Amendment right to hear from a presidential candidate in the 2024 election.

Bailey argues that the legal actions taken against Trump undermine his ability to campaign for president, thereby preventing Missourians from casting a fully informed vote. He has called on the Supreme Court to exercise its original jurisdiction under Article III, Section II of the Constitution to resolve the legal dispute between Missouri and New York.

“We’re going to continue to fight against lawfare in all of its forms, not only by entering and filing briefs in the other illicit witch hunt prosecutions of President Trump, but also fighting to expose and make transparent the collusion between Biden’s Department of Justice and the illicit witch hunt prosecutions at the state level, and fighting censorship and the silencing of not only President Trump’s voice but of listeners in Missouri,” Bailey told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

One of the cards in this Dungeons & Dragons-style game read, “An easy-to-use voice model helps create a viral video suggesting that one of the candidates may have dementia”:

Developed by In-Q-Tel, the venture capital arm of the Central Intelligence Agency, HAIWIRE was ostensibly designed to help officials role-play responses to AI-generated hoaxes, but it read more like a catalog of messaging proposals. It was therefore shocking to learn White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre literally played the above MIND GAMES card yesterday, suggesting provably real videos of an infirm and confused president Joe Biden were “cheapfakes” and “deepfakes”:

House Democratic leadership is bringing out the big guns against a Republican bill set to be voted on next week that would require proof of U.S. citizenship to vote in federal elections, Axios has learned.

House Republicans have made non-citizen voting in federal elections — for which there is no evidence of a widespread phenomenon — a marquee issue going into the 2024 campaign.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), largely ignoring House Democrats' drama this week, has posted on X about non-citizen voting multiple times since Wednesday.

In a whip question — a roundup of the coming week's votes with instructions for how leadership wants rank-and-file members to vote — House Minority Whip Katherine Clark's (D-Mass.) office told House Democrats they are "urged to VOTE NO" on the bill.

The ATF Has Resumed Openly Murdering Americans

Sadly, once again, the armed government thugs with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives have taken the life of another innocent American.

Many people who know anything about the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE, or ATF for short) will know they started off as a “harmless” tax collecting agency that eventually turned into a law enforcement agency in its own right. In other words, they evolved from a bunch of glorified robbers with mechanical calculators and spreadsheets into a gang of violent thugs with guns and badges. This transformation became obvious to the world in the famous Ruby Ridge (1992) and Waco (1993) incidents, both having had heavy ATF involvement and with the latter event culminating in an open massacre of the Branch Davidians that included women and children.

Later as they have cooled their trigger fingers, the ATF’s side gig of deliberately allowing guns to flow into Mexico for “tracking purposes” was exposed in the Fast and Furious scandal after two of these guns turned up near the scene of the killing of Brian Terry, a border patrol officer, in 2010 (a whole of lot of good this “tracking” did).

In more recent years, ATF’s favorite pastime has been to send several car-loads worth of thugs LARPing with full tactical gear to raid and intimidate American licensed gun dealers for supposed infractions of federal firearms laws and confiscate their property. Jim Skelton had his business raided in 2021 after a federal entrapping weasel lied on the federal background check forms and successfully purchased several firearms (a whole lot of good this “background check” did). Russell Fincher was raided at his home in 2023, one of the reasons being that he sold firearms without a Federal Firearms License (FFL), even though he had one. He was yelled at, threatened, and ultimately intimidated into giving up his license.

However, lately the ATF must have been having the blues and reminiscing about the good ol’ days when they could get some solid trigger time on some innocent Americans instead of just yelling at them and stealing their stuff, because just a couple of months ago they raided the home of Bryan Malinowski and shot and killed him.

Malinowski, executive director of the Clinton National Airport in Little Rock, was an avid gun collector and would frequent gun shows to buy and sell firearms with other private individuals, which is completely legal and does not require an FFL. His frequent buying and selling of guns prompted the ATF to consider him as “engaging in the business of selling firearms” and therefore violating a federal law by not having an FFL (what the actual threshold is, nobody knows). They thus obtained a search warrant and proceeded to serve it in the most dangerous way possible.

Peer-Reviewed Study Shows All Cause Death Risks Higher For Vaccinated vs. Unvaccinated

Anew peer-reviewed study concludes that all cause deaths were higher for those vaccinated with one and two doses compared to the unvaccinated.

“Subjects vaccinated with two doses lost 37 percent of life expectancy compared to the unvaccinated population,” Italian researchers found. The booster doses were determined to be ineffective.

The study, titled, “A Critical Analysis of All-Cause Deaths during COVID-19 Vaccination in an Italian Province,” was conducted by Marco Alessandria, Giovanni M. Malatesta, Franco Berrino, and Alberto Donzell and published on June 30, 2024.

Alessandria etal. analyzed Italian National Healthcare System data on residents or those domiciled in the province of Pescara between January 1, 2021 and February 15, 2023.

The researchers wrote in their conclusion that “we should admit that vaccination increases the risk of death from causes other than COVID-19, or by direct damage (adverse effects), or by indirect damage e.g., to the immune system.”

“The main point of the paper is that COVID-19 vaccination did not ‘save lives’ as so many in Washington have proclaimed without evidence,” commented epidemiologist and cardiologist Dr. Peter McCullough on his Substack Courageous Discourse. “The trend was for multiple vaccine doses to increase COVID-19 mortality and there was an important signal for increased all-cause death with one or two doses.”

Last month, a COVID-19 Vaccine Injury and Autopsy preprint paper that was previously censored by Lancet, passed peer review and was published in medical journals.

The 2023 study—conducted by Dr. Peter McCullough, Dr. Harvey Risch, Dr. William Makis, Dr. Paul Alexander, Dr. Mark Trozzi, Dr. Richard Amerling, Dr. Heather Gessling, Dr. Roger Hodkinson, and epidemiologist Nicolas Hulscher— reviewed 325 autopsies of COVID vaccinees who died suddenly, and found that 74 percent of the sudden deaths were directly due to or significantly contributable to the COVID-19 shot.

Former Member of the Australian Parliament Craig Kelly opined on X that government officials who mandated the shots are “guilty of negligent manslaughter.”

“All those that have been involved in mandating these injections —your time is up,” Kelly, national director of Australia’s populist One Nation party, wrote.

“You are guilty of abusing human rights, by a direct violation of Article 6.1 of the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights,” he added.

"Think About It Very Carefully": Author Don Winslow Posts Curious Message To Mark Warner

Last night, President Joe Biden refused to take a cognitive or neurological test despite widespread concerns over his physical and mental decline. ABC’s George Stephanopoulos pressed the President on his low polling and efforts of Democrats to get him to drop out of the race. He specifically mentioned the effort of Sen. Mark Warner (D., Va.) to organize members to pressure him to end his campaign. Biden took a not-so-subtle dig at Warner. However, it was nothing compared to a curious posting by author and Democratic activist Don Winslow, who appeared to threaten Warner on X

When the story broke in the Washington Post, Winslow posted a curious and ominous response:

It is not clear what Winslow meant by Warner knowing what he was talking about when asking if he was “sure you want to go down this road?”

The message has caused a bit of a stir on the Hill. For the denizens of the Beltway, it sounds extortive and threatening. The suggestion is that Winslow has something on Warner.

While some have asked whether this could be viewed as a threat criminally, it is clearly not sufficient for a charge. Warner is a public figure and this comment could just be a reference to political backlash or the lack of an alternative.

His asking Warner “Are you sure you want to go down this road?” could be a reference to the political implications of the resulting chaos, including making Kamala Harris the presidential candidate. Harris is even less popular than Biden according to some polls. While some polls show her doing slightly better than Biden against Trump, other polling shows that she would do considerably worse.

However, it is the follow up of “Think about it very carefully” that has got tongues wagging in D.C.

Whatever the intended meaning, the posting shows the depth of the division on the issue. Those divisions are only likely to deepen further after the refusal to take a test to put these concerns to rest.

Notably, Biden has insisted that the public can simply observe him. However, that position stands in contradiction to the frivolous privilege claims made by the Administration to withhold the audiotape from the interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur. That was an interview that the President was prepared for in advance and held in ideal conditions with staff. It is an opportunity for the public to hear him under questioning to reach the very conclusions that Biden suggested in the interview.

As for Winslow’s posting, it may just be an incautious, poorly worded message rather than extortion or blackmail. We have all made postings that we regretted.

The real issue for Democrats is how to address this looming issue without tearing the party apart. I have tried to drill down on the legal implications of swapping out the top of the ticket or the entire ticket. It is uncharted territory when it comes to the federal election laws on the use of past contributions as well as some states with restrictive rules on ballot changes.

How Kamala Harris's affair with a much-older Democrat kingpin catapulted her career

After Kamala Harris' campaign for president flamed out in late 2019, her California power-player ex advised against her accepting any offer to be second banana on the Democratic ticket, warning that the vice presidency would actually be the nail in the coffin to any future White House ambitions.

Former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown - now 90 - wrote an op-ed in the San Francisco Chronicle warning his one-time lover Harris to decline Joe Biden's summer of 2020 offer, because 'historically, the vice presidency has often ended up being a dead end.'

'The glory would be short-lived, and historically, the vice presidency has often ended up being a dead end,' Brown wrote. 'For every George H.W. Bush, who ascended from the job to the presidency, there’s an Al Gore, who never got there.'

But as Democrats are now falling back in love with Harris out of necessity as they scramble to try and replace Biden at the top of the 2024 ticket following last week's cringe-worthy presidential debate performance, it appears that Brown got it all wrong.

Or at least he didn't account for opportunity knocking, because it is precisely Harris' position as VP that, despite her polling and behind-the-scenes unpopularity, has now made her the obvious choice in the eyes of many to replace Biden.

While Biden has insisted that he is fit to stay in the race and govern should he beat Donald Trump in November, Democratic operatives have reportedly already chosen Harris, and are now even discussing who her running mate should be.

Pay Fire: Evacuations in place due to fast-moving blaze in El Dorado County

A vegetation fire in El Dorado County is moving fast and has prompted evacuations, according to Cal Fire. The fire started southeast of Placerville on Paydirt Drive, the El Dorado County Fire Protection District said. At least 61 acres have burned so far, Cal Fire said. The fire is moving at a dangerous rate of speed.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office said evacuation orders are in place from Country Club and Duden drives to the Placerville Airport.

There are road closures at Broadway and Airport Road, Cedar Ravine Road and County Club Drive, and Cedar Ravie Road and Paydirt Drive. Access to the airport has been cut off. The Placerville Library is the center for evacuation residents.
