Nothing will change after US elections – Putin

Russia’s relations with Washington will not be impacted, no matter who is elected president

The upcoming presidential contest in the US will not fundamentally alter Russian-American relations, President Vladimir Putin has said.

Putin spoke with heads of international news agencies on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

“We believe no serious changes will happen after the elections,” the Russian leader explained, in response to a question from Reuters.

Putin reminded reporters that he had already commented on this issue, describing the incumbent US president Joe Biden as “an old-school politician” and “more predictable” than his predecessor and challenger Donald Trump.

“Everyone took my statement about Biden as some kind of joke at his expense,” Putin noted, adding that the American president’s reaction – toattack and insult the Russian leader– just proved his point thatBiden was predictable.

Putin pointed out thatRussia “never had any special relations” with Trump, whom the Democrats in 2016 accused of being a kind of Russian agent. The Republican president had in fact introduced “massive sanctions” against Russia and exited the INF treaty.

By prosecuting Trump in court, however, the Americans are “burning themselves up from the inside, their state, their political system,” Putin told reporters. ==“They are burning it down to the ground.”

The entire world can see that the persecution of Trumpis just abuse of the American judicial system for political purposes, the Russian president said. He pointed to a spike in Trump’s popularity and fundraising after the felony conviction in New York as proof that Americans don’t believe in the impartiality of their justice system anymore.

“The current administration is making one mistake after another,”Putin said.

Asked if a change in the White House might translate into a change of US policy on Ukraine, the Russian president said it would depend on the next administration’s goals.

If their objective is to make the US stronger and build better relations with the rest of the world instead, “then something might change,” Putin replied.

“Nobody in the US cares about Ukraine’s interests,” Putin said. Americans are “not fighting for Ukraine or the Ukrainian people, they are fighting for their own grandeur and global leadership.”

The WEF has announced that $104 billion was syphoned out of the pockets of taxpayers globally via carbon taxes last year to pay for environmental schemes.

In an article, the WEF brags that this is a new record and that carbon taxes and emissions trading systems now account for 24% of the world’s emissions, up from 7% in 2013.

“Carbon pricing can be one of the most powerful tools to help countries reduce emissions. That’s why it is good to see these instruments expand to new sectors, become more adaptable and complement other measures,” said World Bank managing director Axel van Trotsenburg.

However, according to the report, it’s not enough. Less than 1% of global emissions are being subject to a direct carbon price at the target rates, meaning there’s still plenty of room for more taxes.

No evidence that carbon taxes work

Of course, there’s no evidence carbon taxes change the weather or affect emissions. If there was, Canada, a world-renowned champion of it, would be able to provide evidence of this.

As Newfoundland’s Premier, Andrew Furey, pointed out, the carbon-taxed fisherman still needs to fill up his tank and drive his truck to go do his job. Now, he’s just paying more.

And after years of increasingly severe carbon taxes, protests against them, and heightened pressure to prove that a tax on driving has changed the weather, Liberal politicians in Canada haven’t been able to give any figures that show that emissions have fallen as a result of the carbon tax.

In fact, there’s probably evidence to the contrary, i.e., that not only has the carbon tax not changed the weather, it’s made life significantly worse for Canadians for no good reason—as is likely the case everywhere else there’s a carbon tax.

Indeed, PM Trudeau recently put a gag order on data from the PBO on the impact of carbon pricing.

During a finance committee earlier this week, Parliamentary Budget Officer Yves Giroux told MPs, “The government has economic analysis on the impact of the carbon tax itself and the [output-based pricing system] (OBPS). We’ve seen that, staff in my office, but we’ve been told explicitly not to disclose and reference it.”

When asked if the Trudeau government has “put a gag on you saying you can’t talk about it,” Giroux responded, “That is my understanding.”

Cheyenne Substitute Teacher Says He Was Kicked Out For Not Using Trans Names

A substitute teacher says he’s been barred from a Cheyenne-based school district after refusing to use preferred transgender names of students.

Gene Clemetson was escorted out of East High School in Laramie County School District No. 1 while substitute teaching in March, he told Cowboy State Daily in a recent interview.

The conflict began when a student whom Clemetson described as a boy identifying as a girl approached Clemetson and asked to be called by an alternate name.

“I said to him, very politely, I have to go by the name on the roster,” Clemetson recounted.

The student returned with another teacher, who said the student’s parents had approved of the school using the alternate name.

“Well that’s great, but again, if I’m calling the attendance, if I’m calling the roll, I’m going by the names officially registered with the district,” Clemetson recalls saying.

Clemetson told Cowboy State Daily that if a student were to legally change his or her name, then Clemetson would call the student by the student’s new name. He said he resists a trend of bowing to people’s fleeting “whim or frivolity” about the names issue.

Then the principal confronted Clemetson about the alternate name, he said.

“He proceeded to tell me I did not fit in at East High School, that I was not welcome back,” Clemetson said. “And he proceeded to tell me he was going to report me to the administration and then had me escorted out of the building by his vice principal.”

On another occasion in the spring semester, Clemetson was substitute teaching at Triumph High School.

Again, a student whom Clemetson described as a “young lady” approached asking to be called by an alternate name. The student became upset when Clemetson refused, he recalled.

He said the principal at Triumph also asked him to leave the building and that the human resources department would be contacting him.

Philippine government open to US request to become ‘processing centre’ for future Afghan refugees

MANILA – The government is “open to the idea” of the Philippines serving as a “processing area” for Afghan nationals displaced by their homeland’s conflict before they are resettled in the United States, a Department of Justice (DOJ) official said on Tuesday.

One year after a Senate inquiry was launched to tackle Washington’s request, Justice Undersecretary Raul Vasquez told reporters that talks with the US Embassy regarding the details of a possible agreement were still ongoing.

“Initially, we discussed [hosting] a few hundred [Afghan nationals] and if it works out, then we’ll accommodate more,” he said.

Vasquez added that their main concern was the country’s national security. “The other side wants to fast-track it but we are very careful on this matter because once they’re here, we have treaty obligations and it would be difficult to interfere.”

The DOJ official disclosed the development during the launch of the country’s first-ever National Refugee Day set on June 20.

Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo previously said that the US government formalized its proposal in October 2022 through a “concept note” sent to Philippine Ambassador to Washington Jose Manuel Romualdez.

Manalo said the Afghans, who would not be considered refugees according to the DOJ, would only stay in the Philippines briefly while waiting for the US to approve their special immigration visas.

Short-term stay

The Afghan nationals are former and current workers employed by the United States in Afghanistan, as well as their families, according to Romualdez.

He said that the US government told him they would be housed in the Philippines for “two weeks at the most” while the cost of their stay would also be shouldered by the US government.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, in a speech delivered by Vasquez at Tuesday’s event announcing the country’s first National Refugee Day on June 20, said the move signified “our commitment to our long humanitarian legacy of opening our doors and providing support to people who have crossed international borders to seek safety and protection.”

The DOJ estimates that there are “a thousand” recognized refugees in the Philippines, mostly from Middle Eastern and African countries.

Maria Ermina Valdeavilla-Gallardo, head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees office in Manila, said that globally, more than 114 million people have been forced to flee their homes by the end of September 2023, due to conflict, persecution and human rights violations.

Nvidia's market value has surged past $3tn (£2.3tn), lifting the chipmaker ahead of Apple to become the second most valuable publicly listed company in the world. Georgia court of appeals indefinitely pauses the election subversion conspiracy case against Donald Trump

A Georgia appeals court has halted the election subversion conspiracy case against Donald Trump and several of his co-defendants – a massive victory for the former president seeking to push further legal issues until 2025 if he can’t beat them altogether.

The new order filed on Wednesday from the Georgia Court of Appeals is the latest indication that a trial in the state-level Georgia election subversion case will not occur before the 2024 presidential election.The court said the case will be on hold until a panel of judges rules on whether Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis should be disqualified.

The appeals court is expected to rule on the disqualification issue by March 2025, though it could issue a ruling sooner. Several sources close to the case have told CNN that the timeline remains very uncertain.

Fulton County Superior Judge Scott McAfee had initially allowed proceedings in his courtroom to continue as the appeals court weighed an appeal of his decision to allow Willis to remain on the case.

A spokesperson for Willis’ office said they can’t comment on the appeals court’s order at this point. The DA can ask the appeals court to fast track a decision in this matter if it chooses.

The appeals court’s decision underscores Trump’s series of successes in his long-running strategy to put prosecutors on the defensive, attack them in the public sphere and challenge them in court.

Trump and some of his co-defendants in the sprawling racketeering case have been trying to get Willis disqualified from the case because of a romantic relationship she had with Nathan Wade, the special prosecutor she hired to help handle the case. The defendants argued that Willis financially benefited from the relationship with Wade, who defense attorneys say covered several vacations for the pair.

In March, after what amounted to a mini-trial where attorneys for Trump and his co-defendants sought to prove their case against Willis and Wade, McAfee found there was not enough evidence to firmly prove Willis financially benefited from the relationship.

Willis’ testimony in televised proceedings put her personal life in the spotlight, turning discussion away from the charges Trump and others face in Georgia.

The judge ultimately decided Willis would be allowed to continue to helm the case if Wade stepped down, which he later did.

Steve Sadow, Trump’s lead defense counsel in Georgia, said the ruling was proper.

“The Georgia Court of Appeals has properly stayed all proceedings against President Trump in the trial court pendingits decision on our interlocutory appeal which argues thecase should be dismissed and Fulton County DA Willis should be disqualified for her misconduct,” Sadow said in a statement.

Like the Georgia case, the Florida documents case has no set trial date.

Disney World To Invest $17B In Development Plan

The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District board has given initial approval to propose a $17 billion Disney World development plan.

On Wednesday, the board unanimously voted for the 15-year agreement, which was created to grow Disney World’s potential by adding a fifth theme park, which will require a final vote on June 12th in order to take effect.

“The development agreement will enable us to continue to invest significantly in the district,” said Woody Rodriguez, director of external affairs for Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products.

While Disney claims in the proposal that it will invest up to $17 billion over the next 10 to 20 years, the company has not disclosed any specifics about what is currently in the works. Eight billion dollars will be committed over the first 10 years of the agreement.

To support the new development, district officials have committed to funding roads and taking part in other infrastructure projects.

Disney also commits to spending $10 million on affordable housing projects and a “buy local initiative,” wherein at least half of the supplies and labor used in construction will come from Florida-based companies.

According to a legal announcement, the agreement covers about 17,300 acres that are owned by Disney, and authorizes a maximum of five theme parks, which is one more than what it operates now. However, company officials have not announced a fifth theme park.

The agreement also includes a maximum of five minor theme parks, such as a water park, nearly 1.3 million square feet of office space, 1.7 million square feet of restaurant and retail space, and 53,467 hotel rooms.

Governor Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) previously “took over the governing district through legislation passed by the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature and appointed a new board of supervisors,” according to The Post.

“Reedy Creek” was also later renamed into the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District by lawmakers.

Disney and the district board appointed by DeSantis reached a settlement in state court in March regarding development agreements. Disney had filed a federal lawsuit, which is still pending, and district officials will speak on the lawsuit on June 12th.

Judge Aileen Cannon is again ripping up the court schedule in former President Donald Trump’s classified documents case – pushing some of the legal questions that have been before her for months even further down the road.

Cannon is planning on holding a sprawling hearing on Trump’s request to declare Jack Smith’s appointment as special counsel invalid, signaling she could be more willing than any other trial judge to veto the special prosecutor’s authority.

The planned hearing also adds a new, unusual twist in the federal criminal case against the former president:Cannon on Tuesday said that a variety of political partisans and constitutional scholars not otherwise involved with the case can join in the oral arguments later this month.

It’s an extraordinary elevation of arguments in a criminal case – filed a year ago this week – that likely won’t see trial until next year, if at all.

Wednesday, Cannon went further, adding a hearing on a gag order request from prosecutors to limit Trump’s rhetoric about law enforcement and allotting more time to hear arguments on the special counsel issue.

Cannon willhear arguments on those issues the week of June 21, as well as on the effort by Trump to throw out evidence in his case that was gathered by the FBI in its 2022 search of Mar-a-Lago or provided by his former attorney Evan Corcoran to a grand jury.

At the same time, she delayed other hearings without setting a new date.The calendar shuffling is the latest example of Cannon’s approach so far to the national security case: scheduling hours in court for arguments that other courts have mostly denied, and pushing off resolution of various legal matters for months.

The delays are a significant legal win for Trump, who also scored a major victory in Georgia on Wednesday, where the state court of appeals put the election subversion conspiracy case there on hold indefinitely.

Challenges to special counsel’s office have failed nationwide

Similar challenges from Trump and other high-level targets of special counsel probes have flopped from coast to coast in recent years: Hunter Biden’s attorney didn’t get anywhere with judges in Los Angeles and Delaware; Paul Manafort’s arguments fell flat when the former Trump campaign chairman challenged special counsel Robert Mueller’s authority; and Andrew Miller, a former associate of Roger Stone, also lost his challenge to Mueller’s authority.

Even with other federal trial-level judges allowing special counsels’ criminal prosecutions, Cannon could rule differently.

Cannon’s signal of willingness to entertain challenges to the special counsel comes in the same week Republicans are bearing down on Attorney General Merrick Garland for his use of special counsels.

The issue, now before Cannon in the Southern District of Florida federal court, is likely to remain in the political debate at least until Cannon holds a hearing on the legal power of the special counsel to prosecute a defendant, on June 21.

Cannon has already taken a drastically different tack from other trial-level federal judges who have handled criminal cases charged by recent special counsel’s offices – of which there have been five since Trump became president.

While others have moved swiftly to trial – including special counsel David Weiss trying his case against Hunter Biden in Delaware this week, eight months after indictment – Cannon has moved slowly on pre-trial issues from Trump and his two co-defendants. Many of the most substantive legal questions to be decided in the classified records case, which the Justice Department first brought against Trump last June,aren’t yet ripe for a decision.

The FBI has had possession of Hunter's laptop since December 2019.

And it is highly unusual for a federal trial judge to allow a third-party group unaffiliated with a criminal case to argue in court as part of a defendant’s legal challenges to the case itself. That work is essentially reserved for defendants’ teams to bring and argue in courts across the country, opposite Justice Department prosecutors. Allowing third parties to argue in court is even rare in appeals situations.

“The fact these motions are even being entertained with a hearing is itself ridiculous. That third parties are being allowed to opine at the hearing is absurd,”Bradley Moss* (see bio below), a national security law expert based in Washington, DC, told CNN.

But Cannon has been convinced bythree separate groups of lawyers that they should be able to argue before her.Two of those groups support Trump’s position to dismiss the case against him and say the special counsel, for various constitutional reasons, doesn’t have authority to prosecute. A third group says the Department of Justice’s use of a special counsel should be upheld.

Two former Republican-appointed US attorneys general, Edwin Meese and Michael Mukasey, are part of the groups of so-called “friends of the court” that side with Trump and whom Cannon will hear from. The three groups will be allowed to argue, in addition to Justice Department and defendants’ lawyers, for 30 minutes each, according to the court record. (she is freakin brilliant, especially since the SC does this on major cases on Amicus Briefs)

Meese and Mukasey have special insight to share with the judge, they say, given their former roles leading the Justice Department.

Delayed Trump effort to question federal officials

Meanwhile, Cannon on Wednesday delayed a previously scheduled multi-day proceeding whereTrump’s team wanted to question federal government officials under oathabout how they conducted the investigation. (because they lie so much)

Trump’s legal team is angling to convince the judge to force the government to turn over more records from far-flung offices of the executive branch. The special counsel’s office argued to Cannon in person months ago that making federal government officials witnesses at this stage of the case – as Trump wants – would be an unprecedented exploitation of the court.

Cannon still agreed to the hearing Trump wanted. But that hearing is no longer on the schedule.
