Chang’e-6 is set to make its lunar landing attempt this weekend, in what will be a critical moment in China’s mission to collect the first samples from the far side of the moon.

Chang’e-6 launched May 3 and entered lunar orbit just over four days later. Since then it has been waiting for optimal conditions for its landing attempt.

The farside of the moon, never visible from Earth, holds keys to scientific mysteries relating to the moon’s history and composition.

The mission is targeting a landing in the southern portion of Apollo crater within the vast South Pole-Aitken basin. The sun began to rise over the crater on the lunar far side early May 28.

Landing is now set for approximately 8:00 p.m. Eastern Saturday, June 1 (0000 UTC June 2), according to the European Space Agency (ESA), which is involved via a payload developed in Sweden.

The Chang’e-6 lander module will separate from the mission orbiter in lunar orbit in preparation for descent. The landing is timed according to suitable lighting levels on the surface and the lander’s orbit.

If successful, the lander will go through initial checks and setup. It will then begin drilling and scooping up materials from the surface.

These samples, expected to weigh up to 2,000 grams, will be loaded into an ascent vehicle. The ascender will then launch the precious cargo back into lunar orbit for rendezvous and docking with the orbiter. Surface operations will last about 48 hours.

All aspects of Chang’e-6 have been planned and timed exquisitely in order for the mission to have a chance at success.

Chinese scientists are excited about the prospects for analyzing the samples, if they are successfully delivered to Earth around June 25.

“I have been analyzing the scientific data of the Chang’e-4 mission that landed on the far side of the moon, and I am constantly excited to have new findings from the ongoing rover data.

Therefore, I am particularly excited about the Chang’e-6 mission” Xu Yi, an assistant professor at the Macau University of Science and Technology, told SpaceNews.

“The reasons for the asymmetry in the scale of volcanic activity between the lunar nearside and farside are still subject to different hypotheses.

Chang’e-6 will probably collect lunar samples from various sources, including products of local volcanic activity. Dating and compositional analysis of these samples will provide more ground truth information about volcanic activity on the far side.”

The Negative Ions at the Lunar Surface (NILS) payload developed by the Swedish Institute of Space physics and the Detection of Outgassing RadoN (DORN) instrument from France will collect data during the lander’s operational period on the surface.

An Italian passive laser retro-reflector is aboard the lander, which is also carrying a small rover. The lander will then suffer damage from the launch of the ascent module, likely ending surface operations.

Chang’e-6 also carried a small, jointly developed Pakistan-Chinese university satellite. Icube-Q captured images of the moon and sun once released into lunar orbit.

Due to the far side of the moon being permanently out of view from Earth, direct communication is impossible. To overcome this, the mission is supported by the Queqiao-2 satellite.

That spacecraft is operating in a specialized lunar orbit. Its role is to bounce communications between Chang’e-6 on the far side and ground stations on Earth.

Based on the 2020 Chang’e-5 nearside sample return mission, the ascender and orbiter will likely rendezvous and dock around two days after launch.

The ascender will be discarded a further couple of days later. The orbiter would then prepare to leave lunar orbit at a calculated time.

It would then release a reentry capsule just ahead of its return to Earth, around June 25.

Chang’e-5 collected 1,731 grams of samples, down from the expected 2,000 grams due to a drilling issue. The samples have revealed a number of insights into the moon, its composition and its history.

Samples were first made available to Chinese institutions, but access has been expanded to international scientists.

NASA researchers have also been granted permission to apply for samples, in an exception to a Congressional prohibition on bilateral activities between NASA and Chinese entities.

Chang’e-6 is part of China’s broader lunar goals. The country will follow up with two missions to the south pole of the moon. These are Chang’e-7 in 2026 and Chang’e-8 around 2028.

The country aims to launch its first crewed lunar mission by 2030. Both sets of missions are part of a plan to establish a permanent lunar base.

Marking three-quarters of a century of excellence, the U.S. Air Force Weapons School welcomed distinguished visitors to commemorate its storied history May 17 and 18.

The 75th anniversary weekend facilitated discussions about the school's ongoing commitment to preparing Airmen and Guardians for the challenges of Great Power Competition between hundreds of alumni and former military officials including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., U.S. Space Force Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman, and former Air Force chief of staff, retired Gen. John Jumper.

“When I came in as a chairman, I laid out an expectation letter. One of the areas I highlighted was honing our warfighting skills has primacy in all we do, and that's what the weapons school does,” Brown said.

“It's not just the skills that we utilize within our Air Force, but it's what we do with our allies and partners to ensure that we have all the capabilities to become our adversaries' worst nightmare.

We want our adversaries to wake up every day and say, not today, because of the capabilities we have.” The USAFWS has been a cornerstone of excellence in military education since its inception as a gunnery school in 1949.

The school has since evolved beyond their initial mission of training the next generation of pilots, and they now specialize in providing high-end training to tactical experts and leaders across a myriad of career fields on controlling and exploiting air, space and cyberspace on behalf of the joint force.

Today’s U.S. Air Force Weapons School encompasses 21 squadrons, teaching 31 weapons instructor courses, eight advanced enlisted courses and 39 combat specialties at nine locations across the country, graduating approximately 150 students every six months.

“Our purpose is to create combat leaders who are going to lead our future squadrons,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Charles Fallon, USAFWS commandant.

“One of our main areas of focus is making students expert integrators so they can build and execute a plan comprised of many different assets and capabilities.”

Attendees of the anniversary weekend reflected on the school's enduring legacy and its profound impact on the joint force, as well as U.S. allies and partners.

From its humble beginnings to its current status as a global leader in advanced military education, the USAFWS remains steadfast in its mission to produce exceptional leaders and enhance the combat readiness of the joint force.

In conjunction with the USAFWS 75th anniversary celebrations, Saltzman, a Weapons School graduate, gathered with around 130 space weapons officers, comprised of active-duty Guardians as well as Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard Airmen, at Nellis Air Force Base to discuss the need for a foundational service framework, the importance of creating combat ready forces for the joint fight, and forging a purpose-built Space Force.

“What a first-assignment weapons officer brings to the table is far superior to what the school developed 20 years ago,” Saltzman said.

“Every system in the Space Force has to be able to provide effects in the face of a determined and thinking adversary, and it’s weapons officers who have to develop the tactical echelons…you are expected to lead change and tactics development at the unit level.”

As the festivities ended, the true significance of 75 years of advanced training became clear. The legacy of the USAFWS will continue to inspire future generations of leaders, ensuring our forces are prepared to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world.

COVID-19 Vaccine Litigation Against Mayo Clinic Revived By Federal Court

A lawsuit against the Mayo Clinic must move forward, a federal court has ruled, reviving the suit after it was thrown out in 2023.

The five fired workers who sued the Minnesota-based health nonprofit have all plausibly pleaded that their religious beliefs conflict with the clinic’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate, a panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit ruled on May 24.

The workers in multiple suits, which have since been consolidated, argued that the Mayo Clinic illegally failed to accommodate their religious beliefs, violating Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. Three of the workers applied for religious exemptions to the nonprofit’s mandate and were denied; the two others saw their applications accepted but protested against the requirement that they had to test for COVID-19 weekly.

U.S. District Judge John Tunheim in 2023 tossed the suit, finding that some of the plaintiffs did not prove that they hold religious beliefs in opposition to the mandate or show how the testing requirement conflicts with their beliefs.

The Eighth Circuit’s new ruling is that the judge’s findings were erroneous.

Federal employment law makes it illegal for employers to fire or otherwise take action against employees over their religion. The three workers whose religious exemption requests were denied, Shelly Kiel, Kenneth Ringhofer, and Anita Miller, all said that their Christian beliefs prevented them from accepting COVID-19 vaccination, in part because they oppose abortion and aborted fetus cells were used in the production or testing of the COVID-19 vaccines.

“The district court erred in finding that the plaintiffs failed to adequately connect their refusal of the vaccine with their religious beliefs,” U.S. Circuit Judge Duane Benton said. “At this early stage, when the complaints are read as a whole and the nonmoving party receives the benefit of reasonable inferences, Kiel, Miller, and Ringhofer adequately identify religious views they believe to conflict with taking the COVID-19 vaccine.”

The two other plaintiffs received religious exemptions but refused to undergo weekly testing. One said it “violates her conscience to take the vaccine or to engage in weekly testing or sign a release of information that gives out her medical information.” Both also plausibly pleaded religious beliefs that conflicted with the testing, the panel found.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are stepping up their reelection pitch to Black voters, a key part of their 2020 winning coalition that has shown signs of fraying.

They’ll launch a new Black voter outreach effort during a visit to the battleground state of Pennsylvania on Wednesday. The two will stop at Girard College, an independent boarding school in Philadelphia with a predominantly Black student body, and visit a small business to speak to members of the Black Chamber of Commerce.

The Philadelphia stops are the start of what the campaign is describing as an eight-figure, summerlong effort to engage Black student organizations, community groups and faith centers.

“We will continue to be aggressive, innovative, and thorough in our work to earn the support of the very voters who sent Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the White House in 2020 and will do so again in 2024,” said Quentin Fulks, Biden’s principal deputy campaign manager.

The city of Denver, which has cut its law enforcement budget to help fund migrant arrivals, now has a “Newcomer’s Playbook”, which lays out ways to welcome & assist migrants, who they call newcomers to be more “inclusive”.

Shockingly, the city appears to admit to assisting illegal aliens who “entered without inspection”.

That terminology means typically they are gotaways. Entering without inspection means they were not encountered or processed between ports of entry by Border Patrol, nor were they processed by CBP at a port of entry. It means they snuck in without any encounter with a DHS entity.

As such, that would mean these migrants have no parole status, no I-862 Notice To Appear documents etc, and no other DHS paperwork that would allow them to be in the U.S. while their immigration proceedings play out.

If Denver is admitting to assisting & sheltering illegal aliens who entered without inspection, it could be a violation of federal law having to do with harboring aliens, specifically, 8 USC 1324 of the INA.

Emergency crews scrambled to meet a Virgin Atlantic flight en route from Florida to Scotland Wednesday after the plane reported issues mid-flight.

Waystar Holding Corp.’s initial public offering, launched Tuesday, would be the largest by a US company this year if it prices at the top of its range to raise $1.04 billion. When it comes to all IPOs on US exchanges this year, it wouldn’t even make the top three. The largest such offerings to date are by companies domiciled outside the US: Viking Holdings Ltd. in Bermuda, Amer Sports Inc. in Finland, and Kazakhstan’s Kaspi.KZ JSC. Non-US issuers accounted for 39% of the $17.2 billion raised among IPOs on US exchanges so far this year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. That’s the largest share of the volume in more than a decade.

Global companies choosing to list in the US instead of their native countries has prompted plenty of hand-wringing at home, such as when UK-based Arm Holdings Plc chose New York last year over London for its $5.2 billion first-time share sale. US exchanges say the decision over where to list often simply boils down to companies getting higher prices for their stock. 

US stocks have the highest valuations in the worldaccording to an article in April by Nasdaq Inc. Chief Economist Phil Mackintosh on the company’s website. The US’s market valuation at the time stood at an average of 20.6 times forward price-to-earnings, higher than Europe’s 12.8 times and the 12.6 times for Asia-Pacific excluding Japan, Mackintosh’s article showed. If that wasn’t enough, the US market attracts issuers looking for more specialized knowledge of their companies. “European portfolio managers tend to be more generalist, whereas in the US you tend to have a large number of sector-specific investors,” Michael Harris, global head of capital markets at the New York Stock Exchange. “This level of in-depth analysis within a key industry can often result in a willingness to pay a higher valuation multiple.” The valuation gap for issuers in the sector is particularly pronounced in certain sectors like energy and materials, which may result from different regions’ approach to ESG, according to Karen Snow, Nasdaq’s global head of listings.

Companies “feel that that European investors are just more restricted in the type of businesses that they’re willing to invest in at this point,” she said. Snow expects the bulk of international issuers will continue to come from Europe and Asia, which account for 61% of the money raised by global issuers listing in the US so far this year. 

One such potential issuer is Swedish fintech Klarna Bank AB, whose chief executive officer Sebastian Siemiatkowski said earlier this month that the startup is preparing for an IPO that may value the company at as much as $20 billion, and is leaning towards a New York debut. Other international firms set to list in the US include Mexican airline Grupo Aeromexico SAB and Indian-owned aluminum producer Novelis Inc., which traces its roots to a spinoff from a Canadian company and is domiciled in the country. “It’s a really good mix across all different sectors, which I think is probably one of the most exciting parts of it,” Snow said.

London had previously given Kiev permission to use UK-supplied weapons against targets deep in Russian territory

The Ukrainian military is already using British-made Storm Shadow missiles to strike targets deep in Russian territory, after being authorized to do so by London, Yuri Sak, Adviser to Ukraine’s Minister of Strategic Industries, has stated.

His comments come after British Foreign Secretary David Cameron stated earlier this month that Kiev has the right to strike Russia with weapons supplied by the UK.

In an interview with Bloomberg TV posted on Tuesday, Sak was asked if Ukraine’s forces intended to use foreign weaponsagainst targets far behind the Russia-Ukraine conflict frontline. He replied thatsuch incidents have already taken place.

“The United Kingdom has already previously allowed Ukraine to use their long-range missiles, Storm Shadows, and we have been successfully using them,” the adviser claimed, without providing any further details about these strikes.

Moscow has previously accused Kiev of using British weapons to carry out attacks against Russian regions. In early May, shortly after Cameron’s comments, Russian Foreign Ministry official Sergey Belyaev claimed that “UK-supplied weapons are being actively used by theUkrainian military in terrorist attacks on civilian infrastructure and the civilian population of Donbass, as well as other Russian regions.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine has continued to demand that more of its foreign backers give it the green light to use Western weapons to conduct strikes deep inside Russian territories. Aside from the UK, several other countries, including Poland and Latvia, have said they have no objections to such a use of their donated missiles.

Last week, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also insisted that bloc members should allow Kiev to use their contributed weapons against Russia, arguing that maintaining a ban on such usage amounted to denying Ukraine the ability to defend itself.

Moscow, however, has sternly warned against such moves, with Russian President Vladimir Putin stressing on Tuesday that long-range strikes on Russia using Western weaponrywould represent a serious escalation of the conflict.

“This constant escalation can lead to serious consequences.If these serious consequences occur in Europe, how will the US behave, bearing in mind our parity in the field of strategic weapons?Hard to say.Do they want global conflict?”Putin said.

The judge overseeing the criminal case against Donald Trump for hoarding classified documents at his Florida home has again chided special counsel Jack Smith’s team for its tactics — this time over a request for an order preventing Trump from repeating baseless claims that FBI agents carrying out a search at Mar-a-Lago last year were authorized to kill him.

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon turned down the gag order request Tuesday as she delivered another sharp warning to prosecutors that they need to make more concerted efforts at dialogue with Trump’s counsel before bringing disputes to the court.

“The Court finds the Special Counsel’s pro forma ‘conferral’ [with the defense] to be wholly lacking in substance and professional courtesy,” wrote Cannon, a Trump appointee. “It should go without saying that meaningful conferral is not a perfunctory exercise.”

Cannon didn’t rule out granting the request in the future, but she said prosecutors would need to to further engage with Trump’s side over the issue before she will take it up again. She also questioned Smith’s claim of urgency to file the gag order request, noting that prosecutors filed it on a “non-emergency” basis. It was submitted on the Friday evening before the Memorial Day weekend, leading Trump lawyers to complain that they were being rushed into responding.

In addition, Cannon appeared to fault Smith’s attorneys for skewing how they described the stance that Trump’s lawyers had taken on the proposed gag order. The judge suggested prosecutors had relegated Trump’s response to “editorialized footnotes,” rather than just reciting it neutrally to the court. She directed both sides to provide her with more details in the future on their attempts to work out such disputes and to do so “in objective terms.”

While the judge seemed piqued by the prosecutors’ actions, she turned down a request from Trump’s defense to impose sanctions on the prosecution for allegedly defying court rules and her previous orders. However, Cannon said that was possible if her rulings aren’t obeyed.

“Failure to comply with these requirements may result in sanctions,” the judge wrote in the brief order posted to the south Florida federal court’s online docket Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson for Smith declined to comment on the judge’s order.

Prosecutors have indicated they needed to move quickly with the gag request because of a series of inflammatory public statements by Trump claiming that FBI officials had given the OK to kill him during the court-ordered raid at Mar-a-Lago in August 2022. The claim stems from the inclusion of a policy on use of deadly force included in the operations plan given to agents prior to the search.

Current and former FBI officials have said the policy is standard, included in virtually all such operations plans, and intended to limit the use of force — not broaden it. In addition, they’ve noted that the operation was coordinated with the Secret Service, which is responsible for guarding Trump and his residences, and that it was intentionally scheduled at a time when Trump was out of town.

Prosecutors argued that Trump’s assertions were endangering the lives of FBI agents who took part in the search. (They are reporting what Julie Kelly reported more than a week ago)

Cannon, the judge who delivered the brush back to Smith’s prosecutors Tuesday, has a prickly relationship with those attorneys. They often seem to bristle at her willingness to entertain some of Trump’s arguments and have signaled some impatience at the slow pace of the case, which was brought against Trump last June and presently has no scheduled trial date.

Last week, at a hearing in Cannon’s Fort Pierce, Florida, courtroom, the judge urged prosecutor David Harbach to “just calm down” as he argued against claims of prosecutorial misconduct leveled in the case.

It’s unclear whether prosecutors expected the filing of the gag request on Friday would immediately deter Trump from making similar statements. If so, it was unsuccessful: Trump’s campaign issued several fundraising emails over the weekend, including one that said President Joe Biden “authorized deadly force on my home.”

There is no indication Biden was involved in authorizing the Mar-a-Lago FBI raid or determining its parameters. (This last line is a fucking lie, and they know it!)
