BREAKING NEWS: Douglas DC-4 plane with two passengers crashes into Alaska river
First responders conducted an 'active rescue' on Tuesday morning after a plane plummeted into the Tanana River area of Fairbanks, Alaska.
Alaska State Troopers joined together with local, state and federal agencies to respond to the crash, which took place near Kallenberg Road, officials reported.
There were two people were on board the Douglas DC-4 aircraft, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The condition of the passengers on board remains unknown.
Alaska State Troopers reported that the Douglas C-54 Skymaster airplane had crashed into the Tanana River near Fairbanks - The C-54 is a military version of the Douglas DC-4, which was a World War II-era airplane.
A witness reported hearing a massive explosion just before 10 am local time - and saw a plane flying overhead with an engine on fire.
The witness said he heard what sounded like another explosion as well as a crash, and then saw a huge cloud of dark smoke.

Massive fire destroys WW II-era hangar in Edmonton

Flames and smoke engulfed Edmonton's Second World War-era Hangar 11 as the historic building north of downtown was destroyed by fire Monday night.
Located at 109th Street and 117th Avenue, the building was on the site of the city's former municipal airport.
The large building at Edmonton's Blatchford development, located just west of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, was one of the last surviving structures of its kind.
The 7,400-square-metre hangar was constructed of wood and built in partnership with the U.S. military in 1942 as part of a critical channel to deliver aircraft and war materials to allied forces on the eastern front during the Second World War.
Ryan Lee, curator at the neighbouring Alberta Aviation Museum, watched a significant portion of the building collapse Monday night in disbelief.
"It's completely gutted, there is absolutely no saving it and I just watched it collapse about five minutes ago," Lee told CBC News. "It's pretty scary. There's very little original buildings left at the [former] airport here.
"It's pretty gutting to see it go."
A spokesperson for Edmonton Fire Rescue Services said the call for the fire came in around 6:56 p.m. There were a total of 11 crews on scene Monday night, with heavy smoke and flames visible throughout the evening. No injuries were reported.
As of Tuesday morning, the fire had not yet been called under control and crews remained at the scene
The fire, including cause and the total cost of the damage caused, remains under investigation.
"There's a lot of history in that building that we're not going to get back," Lee said.
Due to smoke from the fire, NAIT has temporarily closed its main campus. In a statement, school officials said poor air quality has been detected in its buildings and all students and non-essential staff are asked to stay away from the main campus on Tuesday.
Once the smoke dissipates, air quality assessments will be conducted to ensure classes can safely resume, school officials said in a statement Tuesday.
Jordon Ashley, who lives nearby, said he saw a lot of heavy smoke around 8 p.m. Monday and came to see what was happening
"[It's] the destruction of a historic building, honestly, I wish I could've visited it myself but I didn't have the chance," he said.
The airport was closed in 2013 for residential redevelopment and there were discussions that the building was going to be repurposed by a private company.
A website for the redevelopment describes it as "one of Edmonton's most exciting up and coming new development projects. A building rich in history, preserved, restored and modernized, to offer a world-class building where commercial and residential come together to build community."
Hangar 11 recently became a designated Municipal Heritage Resource.
The historic hangar was included on the National Trust for Canada's 2017 list of the country's 10 most endangered buildings.
Transit service was temporarily cancelled to the new NAIT-Blatchford Market LRT station during the fire, but has since resumed regular service.

Trailers have brought in Bradley, Marder and M113 vehicles formerly in Ukrainian service
Some of the equipment provided to Ukraine by the US and its allies has been spotted in the Russian capital, in the vicinity of Victory Park. The park is located on Poklonnaya Gora, the hill southwest of Moscow that is home to the museums of victories in 1812 and 1945.
A video shared by the Russian military’s Zvezda TV channel on Tuesday showed two US-made M113 armored personnel carriers and a Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV), as well as the German-made Marder IFV, on transport trailers. The Ukrainian-made ‘Azovets’ armored vehicle was also spotted on its way to the complex.
Hundreds of theobsolete M113s, first deployed in the 1960s, were sent to Ukraine by the US and its allies over the past two years. It was not clear where the one to be displayed may have been taken.
Washington followed up those deliveries with the Bradley IFV, which first saw service in the 1980s.Many of them were destroyed in the first days of Ukraine’s Zaporozhye offensive, last June. One was famously captured while still running by the “Anime squad” of Russian volunteers.
A German-made Marder was captured in near-pristine condition in late March, near the former Ukrainian stronghold of Avdeevka in the Donbass. Afterrunning some tests, the Russian military concluded it wastoo heavy, underpowered, and overall ill-suited to the Ukraine battlefield.
The final trophy appeared to be the ‘Azovets’, a Ukrainian-designed heavy fighting vehicle that mysteriously vanished from its factory in 2016.It was eventually found buried at a base of the neo-Nazi “Azov” battalion, near Mariupol. Muscovites have speculated that the trophies will either be put on display, or shown off during the Victory Day parade on May 9, the annual celebration of the triumph over Nazi Germany.
A captured Ukrainian Leopard 2A6 – donated either by Germany or another NATO member – was towed from the frontline over the weekend. It will presumably end up at the Kubinka tank museum located at the Patriot Park outside Moscow.

Described as a “psychological thriller,” the film promises a “detailed analysis” of the Russian leader’s life and mind
The “world premiere” of a new biopic of Russian President Vladimir Putin featuring an AI-rendered central characterhas been announced by the Polish studio AIO. According to a statement issued via PR Leap, the film, which was first announced in May 2022 and is titled ‘Putin’, will be released in 35 countries on September 26.
The English-language debut of Polish director Patryk Vega, also known as Besaleel, is reportedly the result of three years of filming and “pioneering AI technology.” The film claims to capture the “motives and actions of one of the most controversial figures in contemporary politics,” Vega said.
A recently released 2.5-minute trailer, which includes AI-generated shots of an adult Putin wearing a diaper and taking part in martial arts, promises detailed analysis of the Russian leader’s life and psyche over 60 years, according to the PR Leap statement.
Viewers will be able to “get up close and personal” with the Russian leader’s story, touching on some of the “most intimate moments” of his life, it claims.
