A little-heard-of pesticide linked to infertility in animalsis showing up in the overwhelming majority of oat-based foods sold in the United States, including popular cereal brands Quaker Oats and Cheerios.
The chemical, chlormequat, was detected in 77 of 96 urine samples taken from 2017 and 2023, with levels increasing in the most recent years, a new study by the Environmental Working Group finds.
Further, chlormequat was found in 92% of oat-based foods sold in May 2023, including Quaker Oats and Cheerios, according to the research published Thursday in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology.
Some studies have shown chlormequat can damage the reproductive system and disrupt fetal growth in animals, a cause for concern as to "whether it could also harm humans," EWG stated.
Environmental Protection Agency regulations allow chlormequat to be used on ornamental plants only, not food crops, grown the U.S.
However, its use has been allowed since 2018 on imported oats and other foods sold across the country, and the EPA is now proposing to let chlormequat be used on barley, oat, triticale and wheat grown in the U.S — a plan the EWG opposes.
Organic fare is a safer bet, with just one of seven organic samples found to contain low levels of chlormequat, EWG said.
"Until the government fully protects consumers, you can reduce your exposure to chlormequat by choosing products made with organic oats, which are grown without synthetic pesticides such as chlormequat," according to the nonprofit advocacy group.
"All our products adhere to all regulatory requirements," a spokesperson for General Mills told CBS MoneyWatch in a statement. "Food safety is always our top priority at General Mills, and we take care to ensure our food is prepared and packaged in the safest way possible."
Quaker Oats, a division of PepsiCo, did not respond to a request for comment.

With an investigation ongoing, Dmitry Peskov cautioned Western leaders against making “rabid statements”
Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) is taking all the necessary steps to investigate the death of Alexey Navalny, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.
Navalny died on Friday afternoon in a penal colony in Yamalo-Nenets Region, where he had been serving a 19-year sentence for offenses related to “extremism.” According to the prison service, the 47-year-old felt unwell and lost consciousness after a walk, and was pronounced dead by doctors shortly after.
The FSIN “is taking all the steps that need to be taken in such a situation,” Peskov told reporters. As such, a special inquiry would not be needed, he added.
The Kremlin spokesman said that medical professionals will determine the exact cause of Navalny’s passing, and that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been kept informed of the situation.

ICYMI: Kansas City shooting survivor reveals moment woman apparently begged shooter ‘don’t do it’
A survivor of the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade shooting recounted the moments before gunfire in an interview with CBS Mornings.
Jacob Gooch said he heard a woman say, presumably to the shooter, “don’t do it.”
“I personally did not see the shooter,” Mr Gooch said. “I heard the altercation of a girl or some girls like ‘don’t do it, not here this is stupid’ or something like that. And then the gunshots, which at the time I thought were fireworks.”
Mr Gooch was shot in the ankle, his wife was shot in the calf, and his son was shot in the foot, he said.
The survivor also told CBS Mornings that he saw a group of suspicious people before gunshots rang out, though he was not sure if they were actually connected to the attack.
“I mean, I got suspicious of a certain group of people that were there,” Mr Gooch said. “We were standing on the left side of the stage when the shooting ended up happening. And right before it ended up happening,there was this group dressed in all black. About four, five, six kids with black on, black masks.”
“They disappeared into the crowd and then the show ended and as soon as we started walking around, it happened,” he continued.

A congressional advisory committee just voted in favor of granting Nikki Haley Secret Service protection. While I’m happy she’ll be protected and publicly supported her request, double standards abound.
My campaign first requested Secret Service protection in May 2023 with a 63 page declaration. We still have a current request pending. My request is the first time in 55 years a candidate has ever been denied. The Biden administration is the sole outlier to turn down a request for Secret Service coverage.
Polling is one of the criteria used to determine whether to approve Secret Service or not. Nikki Haley’s polling is a fraction of mine.
According to a NYT/Siena poll, I average 24% in the battleground states. A recent NBC poll shows 34% of Americans could see themselves voting for me. Polling indicates right now that ~50M Americans would vote for me. The will of the people is being thwarted by blatant corruption from Secretary Mayorkas and the Biden Administration.
The Bush administration afforded Barack Obama Secret Service protection 551 days before the election. President Obama provided protection to President Trump early; President Trump provided protection to President Biden early–even though they were political adversaries.
Refusing me Secret Service protection is a way to drain my campaign funds and stop the movement we’re building together. They want us out of the race by any means necessary. This is blatant election interference.
Let me be clear: I have immense respect for the Secret Service. This corruption is coming from much higher up.
As many saw on Judicial Watch this week, documents were published that show Secretary Mayorkas and his cronies deliberately refusing my campaign Secret Service–after credible threats and packets of evidence were submitted. Unfortunately, most of the documents were redacted. What do Mayorkas and his buddies have to hide?
Unfortunately for the establishment and those who skulk around in back rooms, I’m not going anywhere. Our movement is growing stronger and our coalition is building.
