There are two (really just one) reasons for wearing a mask
1. Hiding your identity so you can engage in legal political action without being subject to terrorism from the enemy
2. Hiding your identity so you can engage in illegal political action without being identified by the enemy regime.
Legal activities that require masks usually mean doing a march or protest. Patriot Front being the best example. Patriot Front doesn't wear skull masks. Why? Because why the fuck would you want to wear a mask that screams "I am a school shooter terrorist!" if your goal is to appeal to morally righteous people?
Illegal activities of a political nature usually means insurgent or terrorist actions. The PIRA or FLNC being fine examples. No successful insurgent group, or even terror group has ever used skull masks.
>Why not? Aren't they scary? Wouldn't the IRA have performed better if they wore masks that screamed "I'm a killer demon out to get you"?
Actual, real world, IRL insurgents understand that you need to be liked by your core constituent group in order to have any chance of success. All your recruits, income, shelter, and intel comes from the population you're fighting for.
In an insurgency, the government's job is to convince the population that the rebels are killer-demons who need to be put down.
If you try to look like a killer demon out to eat children, you will do the work of the government.
Skull masks seem so edgy and scary, but they are not the choice masks for serious men. Just angry teens. Or edgy boys.
People may resent me saying this, but no one will ever give a rational explanation why I am wrong, because I am not.
Serious revolutionaries have never used skull masks.
