I don't think warrant canaries hold up in court. Anyway, there are plenty of ways to bypass it. e.g. as a server admin I could not log IPs in the imageboard software, but I could log them at the reverse proxy or OS level or just dump the database with a bash script every so often. You should never trust a claim to not log or only log for X days even when you can see the code.

Don't pretend that sunshine was just storing IP addresses, the april fools hack is why my community (originally meguca/pol/) exists. Sunshine was an effectively permanent log that stored the post itself, poster IP and metadata (probably including user agent) of any post that contained a broad range of keywords, so the data could be turned over to feds weeks or months later. It was 4chan tier shit that made a mockery of the ephemerality of imageboards.

For what it's worth, the site never writes or logs raw IP addresses and there is no way to retrieve them on the server shorting of dumping the entire RAM. IP addresses are always hashed. This is easily confirmed in the source code, which is regularly posted on /homu/. I even remove IP addresses from the reverse proxy logs, although you'll have to take that on faith.

Anyway yes the clearweb sucks. Do you want a prize for noticing? If I made the site tor only, then bans would become totally useless as every user would have the hidden service's IP. There's no hidden service yet because that would require backend code changes and I'm working on more important things, but I'll get around to it. The reality of trying to run a private site accessible on the clearweb is that you have two choices: (1) use a CDN like Cloudflare to provide Encrypted Client Hello support and an IP intermediary, so your users ISP can't tell who they are connected to but the CDN sees and stores all of your users packets without TLS or (2) stay off CDNs and allow your users ISP to know they're using the site through reverse DNS lookups. All I can do is promote using Tor, (good) VPNs and a local encrypted DNS client like dnscrypt-proxy to minimize information leaks, while continuously trying to retain less info without wrecking mod and captcha functionality. I don't want to retain any info on my users, even hashed IP address, because eventually the feds are going to fuck with me and I don't want to have the technical capability to spy on my users.

I was born in 2002, I wasn't there to see the early days of 4chan but it seems like those days never recovered from the endless summer of 2007 and the emergence of Youtube. It seems like the timespan between 2003-2006 established a strong community and memories of internet culture, going only downhill from there. On top of Hirokoshi's mismanagament of 2chan/Futaba and moot's cowardice, the pattern seems to be that from the get-go, imageboards were an ephemeral phenomenon, a sort of digital liminal space of a world that's slowly becoming more and more connected. It was never meant to last. It was a happy accident.

/pol/ won't be revived because the jewish question has gone mainstream, and imageboard culture is rightfully dying. The miracle has served it's purpose. Now, anymore revivals there will be in the future of similar sites like 4chan, imageboard or not, they will have to be rooted in intention and a vision belonging to someone who can dutifully take on that responsibility. Those websites have to provide people something no other place can provide, to give people an incentive to use websites at all for discourse.

Until that time, all we can do is watch that era fade away and be grateful that it happened, not that it ended.

There's stuff like RAM/memory. I remember being at a lan party two decades ago, having ton of tabs open in my web browser, so maybe 50-200 tabs open on browser. With 4gb of DDR3 I believe. Nowdays it's impossible to have 400-500 tabs open without browser gradually starting to memory leak, because nobody can program anymore. Oh and web has 50-70x more ads and trackers than it did in the early days.

Then there's OS. Windows has never in its run been more useless than with its modern iterations. It's full of bugs, OS level spying/tracking, performance issues. To this day mac has million times better audio kernel implementation, while on windows the audio begins to crackle very easily.

There quite literally has never been a worse moment to be PC user. The hardware is overpriced, it most likely doesn't work (because there's too many configurations and nothing is being tested anymore), and that's before you count in the OS which is the final gatekeeper of poor PC experience.
