You guys do remember that after communicating with your Pokemon for a while, trainers can begin and then eventually fully understand the Pokemon and their feelings? I mean, it would have to happen over a long period of time, but then again relationships develop over a long perios of time.

Supposedly once a dog, horse, or dolphin knows it can get sexual satisfaction from a human they will seek it out, from what I've heard. But the OP specifically mentioned a romantic relationship. Pokemon are certainly smarter than animals and would pick up on your body language and respond with their own body language, just like a real relationship could. I'm sure there's plenty of fanfics with good examples...
